Analyze That has more bada bing than its lukewarm reception would lead you to expect. Analyze This (1999) had the advantage of a then-fresh idea--Robert De Niro as a neurotic mob boss seeking therapy with reluctant shrink Billy Crystal--but that idea's stale (and has been handled more authentically in The Sopranos), so this sequel relies on established chemistry and zesty dialogue that matches the original. Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal return as mobster Paul Vitti and psychiatrist Dr. Sobel. In five minutes it reminds you of pretty much every running gag from the first movie, in fine fashion. Which is funnier? That's a BS question, Joel Siegel. Both are a pleasure. This film manages to trot out the tired old "gangsters want to make movies about gangsters" gimmick without boring me. I suspect I didn't appreciate Jelly enough the first time around. He's awesome.

WHEN YOU'RE A JET..........2006-02-18

Seeing Robert DeNiro sing I FEEL PRETTY from West Side Story in a hospital gown is quite a sight indeed. ANALYZE THAT, the sequel to ANALYZE THIS, reunites DeNiro with fussbudgety Billy Crystal in a fairly entertaining, if often times slow, comedy. DeNiro fakes insanity to get out of prison and Crystal is assigned by the FBI to treat and watch over him. It's fun to watch DeNiro fail at all his "normal" jobs and when he lands a stint as the creative consultant for a tv crime series, his expertise comes in handy for his plot to dismantle rival gangs. Anthony LaPaglia in an uncredited role is hilarious as the Australian star of the series who seeks guidance from DeNiro and Cathy Moriarty-Gentile (De Niro's costar from RAGING BULL) does well in her role as one of the gang's leaders. The late Joe Viterelli is hilarious as DeNiro's sidekick, Jelly, but Lisa Kudrow is pretty bland as Crystal's wife.
DeNiro is proving himself to be a deft comic actor and Crystal does okay too; it's all lightweight and predictable but enjoyable too.

"Analyze That" Review.......2005-02-24

I don't see the deal with everyone saying it's a bad movie. It's not bad at all, infact I almost perfer Analyze That over Analyze This. If you haven't seen this, I'd reccomend atleast renting it. It doesn't have as many 'laughing out loud' parts, but it still is a great comedy.

While visiting some family in Utah a few years ago we decided to rent a few movies to pass the unforgivably hot mid-summer weather. We ended up renting "Analyze That" and boy, what a mistake that was! We were expecting at least a mildly funny sequel to 1999's "Analyze This." The potential was there, it's not as if writers (of course it's never a good sign to see numerous writers) Peter Tolan, Peter Steinfeld, and Harold Ramis didn't have decent material to work with; Robert DeNiro, Billy Crystal, Lisa Kudrow, and a funny and entertaining plotline regarding mobsters and therapy. However, this being Hollywood and all, another sequel was botched. It's because of movies like these that sequels have such a bad reputation.

Despite a few genuine laughs in the first twenty minutes or so regarding DeNiro and some "fish out of water" situations, the movie seemed to go downhill soon after. The jokes became few and between as the film laboriously plowed its way through an over-the-top heist setup and execution that felt about as inspired as "Crossroads." Now either they ran out of jokes, they didn't have enough time to invest in an actual story, or the material itself has been played out in so many different ways already ("The Sopranos", "The Whole 9 Yards", "Mickey Blue Eyes", etc. etc.), that there was simply nothing left to write about.

Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs in Analyze This, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, natch) suffering from panic attacks who makes a nebbishy shrink (Crystal, natch) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series The Sopranos not underscored how thin and watery and shticky director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in theaters and De Niro's biggest film ever--would seem more fresh and kicky. De Niro's definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace, and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in Grosse Pointe Blank). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay, and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, it's breezy fun. --David Kronke

BILLY CRYSTAL as much as ROBERT DE NIRO Forms a good team and in the fiction same at rhe reality : They are FRIENDS ! These TWO MOVIES are WONDERFULS ... The first movie is a discovery and the second another discovery and these film with many jokes does mean that a mafioso can also be ill as much as anybody THEY ARE TWO HUGES ACTORS ! AMUSING ! This was an amusing movie, but the language is 100% gutter. Rounded down from 2.5 stars to 2 stars for language. I Acutally liked Analyze That a little better than Analyze This. but now that I've seen them once, I see no need to see them again.

"You, you're good, you." Yes! Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) is brilliant as the mobster who cries and gives no mercy to his enemies. Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal) becomes his shrink after one threat and there goes on! "Analyze This" is funny with Sobel trying to get married, but Vitti interrupts his life and shoots pillows for no reason. "Analyze That" is funnier with hilarious parts including the woman and the midget picture, the tuna casserole, and the "West Side Story" sing-a-longs. Momentous! These are two funny movies that people need to see.

TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD..........2005-01-23

SHOWTIME ****

This is a light-hearted buddy movie that is thoroughly enjoyable. Pairing up two greats, Robert De NIro and Eddie Murphy, was pure casting genius, as they generate great chemistry together, making the film an action-comedy worth seeing. Robert De Niro does a great job as straight man for Eddie Murphy.

Robert De Niro plays the role of LAPD Detective Mitch Preston, a hard-boiled, no nonsense flatfoot, who knows the streets and knows how to do his job. Eddie Murphy plays the role of Officer Trey Sellars, a patrolman who also moonlights as a would be actor, talentless though he may be, as he would rather play a cop than be a cop.

Rene Russo, as gorgeous as ever, plays the role of television executive, Chase Renzi, who needs a hit show. She wants to do a cop reality show, and due to circumstances that present themselves, Detective Mitch Preston and Officer Trey Sellars have been tagged to foot that bill. Forced to work together, followed by television camera crews, the two become instant celebrities, much to Detective Preston's chagrin and Officer Sellars' delight.

William Shatner is in the film, playing himself as the actor who played cop T.J. Hooker on a television series of the same name. Shatner is up to snuff and very funny. Look for Alex Bornstein of Mad TV fame in the small role of the casting director. Look also for Johnnie Cochran in a cameo role.

Taken at face value, this is an action-comedy, buddy movie that is quite enjoyable.

ANALYZE THAT **

As it was raining out, my twenty-two year old son decided to rent some films from the local video place. Being a huge Robert De Niro fan and, having really enjoyed "Analyze This", the prequel to this film, he rented this sequel, expecting a very funny film. We hunkered down to watch it together, waiting for the film to make us laugh. We had a very long wait.

It is hard to believe that Harold Ramis, the same director who successfully directed the very funny "Analyze This", as well as other successful comedic gems, such as "Groundhog Day" and "Bedazzled", could turn out such an unfunny clunker of a film. Ham handed, leaden, and obvious would best describe this effort. Of course, he is hampered by the material with which he had to work. There is only so much one can do with a script that is torpid, stupid, and just not funny. The director is lucky that he had such an excellent cast with which to work. Who knows how much worse this film would have fared in the hands of less talented and skillful actors.

Reprising their roles in "Analyze This", Robert De Niro, as Mob boss Paul Vitti, and Billy Crystal, as his reluctant shrink, Dr. Ben Sobel, do all they can to raise the material with which they had to work to another level. In the final analysis, they are unable to do so, and the film fails to deliver. In fact, the viewer ends up feeling almost embarrassed for them, so forced and contrived are their performances. They are simply not very funny.

The actual premise of the film is simple. Paul Vitti is in prison, on the cusp of completing his sentence, when he realizes someone is trying to kill him. He feigns insanity by singing show tunes and being seemingly catatonic, at times. The Feds call in Dr. Sobel, who is forced to take Vitti out of prison into his care and custody, with orders to get Vitti in shape for his parole board hearing and onto the straight and narrow. Once free, however, Vitti reveals to Dr. Sobel that his actions were merely part of a ruse to get out and discover who is trying to kill him.

Moving in with Dr. Sobel, Vitti disrupts the doctor's life. He fails to take to holding down a regular job, as he has socialization problems. When Vitti finally hooks up with a gig he can tolerate, as consultant to a TV series
about a mob boss, he uses the job as a front for bringing his old crew together and finding out who is trying to ice him.

Lisa Kudrow, as Dr. Sobel's wife, is not given much with which to work, and the little material with which she has to work is not particularly funny. Cathy Moriarty, who once played De Niro's wife in "Raging Bull", the film about boxing great, Jake LaMotta, is teamed up with De Niro again. Looking none the worse for wear, she appears here as a rival mob boss. She, too, does the best she can do with the hand that she has been dealt. In fact, the only person in this film who is remotely funny is Anthony LaPaglia in the role of the mob boss on the television series for which Vitti is a consultant. Unfortunately, his is but a small role.

Still, this is a film that devoted Robert De Niro or Billy Crystal fans may wish to see. In that case, rent it rather than buy it.
