Weirdly marketed as a right-wing screed upon its initial release in 1973, Walking Tall is really a tragic, shockingly violent post-noir film based on various legends surrounding real-life Southern sheriff Buford Pusser. Joe Don Baker (The Natural) gives a powerful performance as Pusser, who took on determined forces of crime and corruption in his town at great personal expense. Directed with an intentionally crude force by Phil Karlson (Kansas City Confidential), one of the toughest filmmakers of the 1950s, the film's grimness does not let up, but in the end it is more likely to break hearts than turn stomachs. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars The Best of the Redneck Roughies.......2007-07-27

Back in the early to mid 70's, there was a genre in film known as Redneck Roughies. Low budget films taking place in the South consisting of car chases, fist fights, coarse language and even a boob shot here and there. Films like Max Baer's (yes, that's Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies!)"Macon County Line", Roger Corman's "Jackson County Jail" among others fell into this genre.

But the undesputed king of these Roughies was Walking Tall. Very loosely based on the exploits of real life Alabama sheriff Buford Pusser, the story tells of a one man battle against corruption. Joe Don Baker gives a career-making (although one note) performance as the club wielding lawman ready to bash heads of anyone who gets in the way.

First he gets sliced up at a casino and lives, later he's shot in the face and lives, then he's shot all over the place by machine guns and still lives! Rasputin eat your heart out! Got to be a special kind of lawman to endure that! The film has it's share of grisly violence but no sex, just a few boob shots.

The film was a box-office sensation raking in about $17 million and made on a shoestring budget. All in all it's a good action fair but certainly no family pic. If you're into some good gritty Redneck films, this is one to see.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD SEMI TRUE MOVIE.......2007-03-23

I live in the same area where this story took place & most of the people here that knew pusser tell a much different story of what really happened than these movies . Still they are very good action movies !

5 out of 5 stars A True Story Turned into A Great Movie.......2007-01-30

This movie was the true story of the life of Buford Pusser who was a
nobody who run for sheriff against Al Thurman the current sheriff and
won. Joe Don Baker plays the role of Sheriff Buford Pusser, Elizabeth
Hartman plays the role of his wife Pauline Pusser and Gene Evans plays
the role of Sheriff Al Thurman. When Pussor is beaten to with in an
inch in his life that's when he decides to run for Sheriff. Pussor did
things different then Sheriff Thurman and the biggest thing was that he
didn't have a ***. When Pussor starts to clean up the town the mob gets
very upset and tries to get even with the sheriff. Does the mob go to
far in their effort to stop the sheriff from interfering in their own
personal business.

3 out of 5 stars Not My Cup of Tea.......2007-01-07

This movie was a little too graphic for my taste. Joe Don Baker moves to a small town and it doesn't take long for him to get into trouble. He participates in a bar fight and some thugs slice him open. Somehow he survives the attack, but he doesn't let anything slide. He campaigns to become the new sheriff and sure enough, it happens.

Baker busts a team of folks for making some surprisingly dangerous moonshine, and does bunch of other sheriff-type stuff. But there are way more bad guys in the town than we realize, and he gets shot point blank after falling for one of their traps. Once again, it's back to the hospital where he miraculously survives, again. His pursuit of criminals becomes even more aggressive, and he shoots a crooked lady at Christmas time.

I guess you can see where this is going. People keep sending Joe Don Baker to the hospital but he just keeps coming back. The movie gets more and more violent during this progression, and I was more depressed than inspired.

If you want a lighter Joe Don Baker movie, you can always watch his infamous performance as Mitchell, the policeman with no last name.

It frightens me that this was based on a true story. While it may not be my cup of tea, the public needs to know if stuff like this is actually happening.

4 out of 5 stars A All Time Classic.......2006-12-29

One of my top favorite movie's of all time. Many classic lines. Joe Don Bakers finest role. Holleywood always takes some liberties, but this film is brutal and realistic from what I've read. Even macho's will be wiping the eyes before the movie ends.

Product Description

ENGLISH SUBTITLES!!! Import, Region free, Widescreen, NTSC DVD. Audio Tracks: DD 2.0 FRENCH and optional DD 2.0 RUSSIAN (voice-over)____________ SYNOPSIS: In this wacky French spy comedy, the chief of the French secret service wants very much to keep his job and stoops to chicanery to prevent rivals from closing in. He points to a man chosen at random from a crowd of people (Pierre Richard), and identifies him to his rival as an important spy who must be followed at all costs. In fact, he is François, a bumbling, good-natured musician. However, his lack of any notable spy-like failings only serves to convince his watchers that he is more skillful and professional than they. At every turn, they redouble their efforts, leading to many absurd situations. For instance, they send a beautiful woman to try to get his secrets from him. Instead, convinced of his innocence, she falls in love with him. This extremely popular film became actor Pierre Richard's signature role, and he often used the character's name in other films. This was one of the first successful screenplays by Francis Veber, who went on to write the screenplay for La Cage Aux Folles and many other successful comedies.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Comedy with Great Soundtrack,.......2006-12-20

This comedy/mystery is simply delightful. You can call it a masterpiece of its genre(s) or you can just enjoy its great timing, hilarious physical comedy, its story that involves spies, murders, and a sexy blonde (Mireille Darc) in a dress you have to see to believe. Pierre Richar is excellent as the blond man of the title who one day became a "person of great interest" for two rival departments in the French secret service. As we know, it is very difficult to find a black cat in a dark room especially if the cat is not in the room and that's what the experienced employees of the secret service try to do - to find the sense in the routine activities of a man they are convinced is an important spy and who is in reality an absent-minded and oblivious violinist and the object of the practical jokes by his fellow musicians.

If it is not enough, there is a soundtrack written by Vladimir Cosma and performed by the King of Pan Flute, a famous Romanian musician Gheorghe Zamfir. Cosma recalls that when he was composing the music for The Tall Blond Man, he was thinking of the movie "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" and he wanted to use the elements of the Eastern European music. His idea to use the themes of Romanian doinas played by Zamfir was a stroke of genius. Once you hear the melodies, you won't be able to forget them.

5 to the movie and 5+ to the soundtrack

Falling in love can be glorious, or poignant, or heartwarming ... but for most of us, it's mostly just absurd. And The Tall Guy captures that hysterical, head-over-heels surrealism perfectly. Jeff Goldblum plays the neurotic, allergy-ridden Dexter King, a stage actor stuck in a dead-end job in an interminable run of London's tackiest comic review. He's the "tall guy," the eternal butt of slapstick gags delivered by the star performer, a brilliantly obnoxious Rowan Atkinson. Cupid's arrow strikes between sneezes when hay fever propels Dexter to the doctor's office--and he catches his first glance of Nurse Kate Lemmon (a pre-Shakespeare Emma Thompson). Battling his deep-seated fear of needles, Dexter invents excuses to get shots just to get close to her. After much pain (and much prodding from Dexter's oddly maternal nymphomaniac landlady), their courtship takes off. (Kate's practical dating philosophy--have sex first, so you know if all those expensive dinners will actually be worth it--leads to one of the most comically destructive love scenes ever filmed.) Dexter, giddy with new love, gets fired--and lands the title role in Elephant!, a musical version of The Elephant Man (one heartwarming hit: "Somewhere in Heaven, There's an Angel with Big Ears"). But his curvaceous leading lady develops a champagne-fueled passion for pachyderms ... and Dexter's in yet another sticky situation.

As British romances go, The Tall Guy owes more to TV's Fawlty Towers than The English Patient--but what it lacks in depth, it makes up in sheer comedy. --Grant Balfour

Description

From the hit-making writer of NOTTING HILL and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, THE TALL GUY is a sharply funny story punctuated by the likable comic chemistry of popular stars Jeff Goldblum (JURASSIC PARK) and Emma Thompson (SENSE AND SENSIBILITY). Awkward and out-of-place, Dexter (Goldblum) is a hard-luck American actor struggling to get by on the theatrical stages of London. His dreary personal life, however, gets a much-needed shot in the arm when he meets a pretty nurse (Thompson) during one of his many visits to the local clinic. Together they find love ... but when your life is like Dexter's it's hard to know a good thing when you get it! With a wonderfully memorable performance by Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) and a stellar cast -- don't miss this smartly detailed and charmingly hilarious comedy treat!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Funny, sexy, and wellwritten.......2007-01-05

This is a very funny, well-acted piece, for anyone who loves real, true comedy. It is a very perceptive commentary on the world of theatre, and the very idea of a musical comedy version of the tragic Elephant Man just makes me laugh again and again. Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson are really great!

1 out of 5 stars Unwatchable.......2006-06-04

A horrible, terrible movie. No pacing, no wit (Elephant Man as a musical is leagues away from Springtime for Hitler folks) and a gutless waste of many talents. If you're considering purchasing this movie, I beg of you, rent it first. If you can make it through the first ten minutes without wanting to hurl yourself out the window, good on ya. Otherwise, count your blessings that you won't embarrass yourself by having it on the shelf when company comes by. Oy what a terrible movie.

1 out of 5 stars They said it was funny...but they lie like a rug!.......2006-02-18

They said it was funny...but they lie like a rug! This is a movie that was too painful to watch. I had to fast-forward through 80% of it just to stay awake.

4 out of 5 stars Small cast, big laughs.......2005-09-19

A very enjoyable romantic comedy from a time in the world before the public had seen Emma Thompson in her more widely-known sterling roles in "Henry V" and "Remains of the Day." While the film, at times, seems like it is still in short-pants before 'maturing' to the likes of "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill", it is charming, lighthearted fare in which the viewer roots for the hapless 'Tall Guy', played by Jeff Goldblum. Guy observes his sad life, meets the off-of-center girl, they fall in love, her influence makes him a better man, he bungles their relationship and he ultimately risks losing her and her meaningfulness. Only in the end do we see if he can redeem himself, and we hope that he does. Comedic pillar Rowan Atkinson plays the thoroughly enjoyable bane in Goldblum's life, the shape of which nods to those familiar with Woody Allen's film work, fraught with the usual sorts of personal anxieties, quirky tenement characters and jabs made at the acting profession, the medical industry and typical relationship hang-ups. This movie is fun, how can it not be? It includes a musical based on the life of the Elephant Man (Elephant!), Annie Hall-style (or if you will, Ally McBeal-style) character-imagined scenarious played out to great effect, and the kind of culinary love scene you wish could have been seen in "9 1/2 Weeks". Too bad this film is no longer in production, but it is worth the price of a purchase on Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars The Second of the Buford Pusser series.......2007-02-01

This picture came out in 1975 and it was the second in the three part series of the life of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Bo Svenson takes over the role of Sheriff Buford Pusser, and Luke Askew plays the role of Mobster Pinky Dobson. The last that we saw Sheriff Pusser he was laying in a hospital bed after him and his wife who was killed in ambushed Sunday morning drive. After Pusser recovers he goes after the men that killed his wife. Is Pusser able to complete the revenge that he's after or does the mob try to take him out before he successes. The only thing that bother me about this picture that this was an actual true story. How could you leave in a town with this kind of crime and yet don't do anything about it.

3 out of 5 stars Vengeance is Mine Sayeth Buford.......2006-09-26

Near the end of the Original WALKING TALL, Sheriff Pusser's wife is killed while the mob is attempting to kill him. Now it is time for payback. There are a few changes, though.

Bo Svenson replaces Joe Don Baker as the likable sheriff. He does a creditable job but, under the circumstances, he is less concerned with the niceties of exactly following the law.

He's still effective, though. He is so effective that the mob is desperate to get him and hires a variety of hit men to do the job. One of the mob leaders, in particular, is just as obsessed with getting the sheriff as the sheriff is with getting them. That leads to an intense conflict and no concern for niceties. That means violence and mayhem.

Even with his proclivity for violence, the sheriff is concerned for his people. He is still a "nice" guy unless you are one of the people who is responsible for the problems. He still manages to get most of the small fry but the big fish still elude him.

This is not a bad movie as sequels go but it is not as good as the original. Anger can only take you so far in progressing the plot. It cannot make up for a lesser script and lesser story.

4 out of 5 stars not as good as the first but..........2004-12-14

Bo Svenson is damned good in this. No he ain't the actor we were used to having in the role since he ain't Joe Don Baker but he's very good in this. He has a real integrity about him and conveys a hunger for justice.

2 out of 5 stars Walking Small.......2002-04-03

The original "Walking Tall", despite its low budget, was highly entertaining and commercially successful. The cast was very strong (particularly Baker and Hartman), the script was sound, and the direction was good. However, this sequel was shot by a different studio, with acting, direction, and script which are glaringly inferior to its predecessor. Joe Don Baker wisely declined to reprise his role as Buford, so the role went to Bo Svenson, who doesn't possess the acting skill required for a deodorant commercial, and who once again delivers a typically rotten performance. He is so bad in his role as the sheriff that one almost cheers for the villains, in the hope that someone will get this clown off the screen, and rescue viewers from further boredom. In fact, he should have been arrested for attempting to impersonate an actor.

After the initial film, there was really very little story left to tell, so it isn't long before this film bogs down quite badly, sorely testing the endurance of the viewer. As entertainment, it is a complete waste of time for all but the most entertainment-starved viewer; however, as a shining example of cinematic incompetence on all levels, it is a masterpiece. However, this is not as bad as it gets - there is an even worse sequel ("Final Chapter"), which almost makes this one look good by comparison.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Finsh To The Pusser Story.......2007-02-24

This was the final chapter of Walking Tall the life of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Bo Svensen returns to play the role of Sheriff Buford Pusser, Lurene Tuttle plays the role of Grandma Pusser, and Forrest Tucker plays the role of Grandpa Pusser. When the picture ended the last time Pusser had just finished of the last man that was involved in killing his wife. Pusser term as Sheriff is coming to an end and now he has a new challenger. Pusser looses the election and now is unemployed. He turns to buying junk cars and fixes them up to be sold. In the mean time Pusser tries to get on with the highway patrol but is ****** ****. When things get bad a movie director comes calling and wants to make a Hollywood production out of his life. Pusser agrees but he's got more problems then he realizes. I give this movie 5 weasel stars because of the suspense that keeps watching the picture and the action. You can get all three films in DVD right here on Amazon.Com

3 out of 5 stars End of the Road.......2006-09-26

The second Walking Tall ends with a notice that Sheriff Buford was killed in an auto accident. This third one picks up earlier in the story though. He is still adamant about getting the people who killed his wife and the Mob is still bent on getting the sheriff but Buford has a problem. He has lost his job as sheriff.

The job loss comes about for several reasons. In some cases, Buford is scene as having gone too far outside the legal boundaries. This happens even when his solutions make life easier for everyone, including the perpetrators. The people of his county also seem a bit jaded by continued success. Where they once cheered him, now they are not ready to support him.

The loss of his job means that Buford has to go after justice as a private citizen and he is well on his way to the poorhouse in pursuing his aims. The new sheriff is suspicious of him and is fearful that Buford might become a problem for him. It begins to look like he might have to move away with his business unfinished when he gets a lucky break.

A Hollywood producer learns of his story and wants to make a movie about him. That brings in money and a chance for achieving his goals. The mob leader with a taste for vengeance finally gets his chance and we learn the story of the end of the former Sheriff of McNairy County.

This one is better than the second but not as good as the first.

5 out of 5 stars the first Walking Tall was best but..........2004-12-14

Walking Tall - the Final Chapter has an ending that breaks my heart. VERY MOVING AND TRAGIC. Svenson does another fine job conveying integrity and a hunger for justice.

REAL EX-CONS, not actors teach you their workout secrets on high quality DVD. No gym membership. No equipment to buy. Are you too scrawny? Overweight? Out of shape? Already in shape but want to improve? Then The Prison Yard Workout is for you. Here's what people are saying: I have been thoroughly impressed with the results from this workout. I have gotten more ripped and physically stronger than before I started the program-not to mention faster. I have two kids in martial arts & organized sports and this has allowed me to be able to keep up with them and continue to in the future. I will be doing this workout for life. Thank-you! William Perkins, Age 32 , Salem Va. This is one of the best exercise videos I've ever purchased. All other companies say that you need to buy other equipment that isn't necessary. I personally realized at the gym years ago that I could lift 220 lbs. on a lat pull down machine but could barely do 2 pull-ups weighing 187 lbs. So now I can do more than 2 pull-ups and I noticed at the gym that I am the only one that does pull-ups. Nobody tries them because they can't and/or to hard. I like a real work-out and getting real strength and results from it and the Prisonyard Workout gives me exactly that. Melvin M., Grove City, OH.

They said it was funny...but they lie like a rug! This is a movie that was too painful to watch. I had to fast-forward through 80% of it just to stay awake.
