Description
Originally taped in 1986 for Canadian television, this is the first World Wide DVD release of the man known as the Gershwin of Brazil. Also includes a rare interview with Jobim from his home in Rio.

Bossa Nova Guitar.......2007-07-04
Can't say enough good things about this instructional DVD. Mr Lubambo is very likeable as instructor, and the lessons progress at a challenging, but not impossible rate from basic to fairly advanced. If you are a guitarist who has gotten in a bit of a rut with the ordinary type chords and progressions this is a great way to expand your horizons . Learning the context for many of the chords is another benefit. A great way to get the basics of a beautiful and melodic musical style.

This is a swindle.......2007-05-25
Please do not buy this dvd. If you have the laserdisc (or the original VHS )(original title: Jazzvisions: Rio revisited) you will have a very best image and sound converting it to DVD with an apropiate program and a computer.
Who are this guys and why are they making this garbage ?
Oh what a disappointment.......2007-04-16
I own (and love) the laserdisc version (Rio Revisited), so when I saw this version in the store in the DVD format with 5.1 sound, I thought I was buying a sharper, improved product (image and sound). Well, guess again. The image is fuzzy (I believe my laserdisc offers a slightly crisper image) and the 5.1 sound turned out to be tinny.
I believe that the technology is out there to provide a better product. Take as an example the new James Bond dvds.
Anyway, if you own the laserdisc, stick with it. And lets wait for someone to do this one RIGHT!! Jobim deserves better!!!!
All together now.......2007-03-20
You can't go wrong with the masterful performance of Jobim and his exceptional musicians and singers. And a svelte Gal Costa[1987 show in Los Angeles]! But, buy the Rio Nights dvd instead. It has a better film quality plus you get to have a terrific looking Sergio Mendes show up to tell ya how much he loves Jobim. On that we can all agree!
bought it, returned it..........2006-09-07
I've been a fan of Jobim's music for years -- his songs contain so much beauty and emotion, and his influence is (deservedly) widespread. The problem I had with this DVD is that for some reason, he chose to sing the entire show in English -- and does so having to constantly refer to notes lying on his piano. I've long enjoyed listening to his songs sung in the original Portuguese -- I don't speak the language (I know only a few words), but that, to me, is part of the beauty of these songs (and other 'world music' as well). The native language of a song is part of the soul of the work -- when it's 'watered down' for American listeners it takes away so much from the original (at least for me).
The musicians are first-rate, the playing and arrangements are fine, and technically (picture and sound) the recording is first-rate. If the language issue isn't an important one to you, then I can recommend this DVD -- it was just too much of a 'deal-killer' for me.

The best dvd of Marisa.......2007-05-02
Very good, you can see Marisa who play acoustic versions of the cd a great noise, she is a great artist!
DVD version tracks are not same as on audio CD version.......2007-04-18
Marisa is great on this DVD. My only issue is with Amazon - they don't provide a listing of the songs on this DVD. I mistakenly believed that the DVD contained a superset (same + extra tracks) of the same songs as on the audio CD version (A Great Noise), but this is not the case. Many songs on the audio CD (which I looked forward to hearing) are not on this DVD.
Also, this is not simply a DVD of live concert performances, but rather a set of video travel journal of studio recordings interspersed with 3 or 4 live concert tracks.
beautiful music made by friends .......2007-04-07
This is one of the first musical dvd's I've purchased and I have been showing it to my friends because the songs, the images and quality of sound are terrific. Best of all is the interplay of Marisa with her friends/band members. I have loved Brazilian music for years but this dvd's English subtitles and scenes of Brazil really opens up the music for me and my friends. "Mais" is enjoyable too.
Marisa Monte is a living angel sent to prove there is a spirit of love!.......2007-01-05
Buy everything you can find of Marissa Monte's music! Everything!, including CDs with her tracks featuring duets with David Byrne and Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes on many Luaka Bop Compilations! Marissa Monte's talent is self-defined but I also say She is one of those various Brasilian Godesses!!
A Fantastic Musical Voyage.......2005-02-15
For Marisa fans, this is a must-have. The sound and visuals are far superior to the video, plus there are a bunch of great extras, including the award-winning Segue o Seco video, the complete Besta e tu performance, and a fun interview with Marisa where she gives a glimpse into the friendships with Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes that gave us the recent and tremendous Tribalistas. For those not familiar with Brazilian muic, this is a great introduction, showing the charm and vitality and variety of the music, plus, and most importantly, this is a great showcase for the voice and beauty of Marisa. Five stars is not enough!

Criminal rip-off.......2007-05-07
This DVD seems like nothing but an illegal copy of another DVD. Both the cover and the DVD itself is printed with "Antonio Carlos Jobim & Gal Costa, Rio Nights Live". Reading through the song selections, it contains the exact same songs as the other DVD i bought: "Antonio Carlos Jobim, In Concert". However, as I turned the DVD on it wasn't even Jobim at all! What showed up on the tv was a bad copy of a japanese (or asian) action movie! This is criminal and seems most of all like a case for the FBI!
Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY THIS!!!
Chiquita Banana-Carmen Miranda.......2007-03-16
As a kid I loved the crazy Chiquita Banana ads on tv. Later I learned that around WW2 there indeed was a crazy [and under-rated singer] Brasilian singer/dancer with hats full of fruit. Well, in this dvd, shot very well by the way, in L.A. in 1987, Gal Costa is at her coochie coochie cutest. The mane of hair, the luscious lips, well she was downright svelte! Her voice was very supple and she is great. But, we are here for Jobim. He sings, he plays, he conducts, and the musicians and 5 female Brasil girls are all just heavenly. Jobim is gone but I think he has become St. Peter's musical director up at them purlie gates. You will love this concert!

Many movies have tried to weave a web of coincidences and quirky characters into a satisfying tale of love, but few of them succeed. Bossa Nova, directed with a deft touch and acted with simplicity and genuine charm, pulls it off. Mary Ann (Amy Irving) is an American teaching English in Rio de Janeiro; her husband died years before and she has given up on love. Lawyer Pedro (Antonio Fagundes) is in the middle of a sticky divorce and wants his wife back, but when he sees Mary Ann in the hallway outside her language school, he is instantly smitten and starts taking her class. Meanwhile, another student of Mary Ann's is having an affair over the Internet; Pedro's brother falls in love with Pedro's headstrong new intern; and there's the soccer star who's taking lessons from Mary Ann so that he can join a team in Manchester. Bossa Nova has a relaxed, smooth flow, not unlike the music it's named after. The ways the characters' lives start to interlock would be preposterous if it weren't so gracefully developed--every crossed path seems unforced and natural. The romance manages to be sweet and realistic, a mixture of swooning and melancholy. Irving and Fagundes are wonderful, particularly because they aren't callow youngsters but people who've experienced some hard knocks and yet continue on. All in all, a delight. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Easy to watch........2007-01-09
This movie is very easy to watch. It doesn' get to be hilarious but it is somewhat funny. The language barrier is what makes the movie funny in a way. Overall it's your tipical guy-gets-the-girl, girl-gets-the-guy in the end type of thing but it's worth watching because the breath taking views of Rio de Janeiro will remind you that the place is still amazing regardless of poverty or violence.
Bossa Nova.......2007-01-03
This is a delightful film set in a magnificently beautiful Rio. Add the beat of the Samba, love, and wonderful characters and you have an experience that just makes you feel good. It is the kind of movie you can watch over and over.
Immerse yourself!.......2006-06-02
I have read several reviews on this movie and frankly I think some of these people should get over themselves! This was a charming, funny and thoroughly watchable movie that takes you away from your everyday life and immerses you in the wonder that is love and Rio de Janeiro. Many people have issues with the fact that this movie shows a fairytale Rio without favelas and crime - how many movies do you see of Paris without dog poo and rudeness or London without drizzle or New York without crime - many! This is a romantic comedy and serves Rio and its actors beautifully. As someone who loves Rio in all its aspects, I was happy to see a positive side of Brazilian life rather than a gritty, depressing 'real life' scenario. Yes, favelas a real but there are millions of people in Rio who don't live in them! We see enough of the sad side of Brazilian life, every so often it is good to show the positives. Relax, take off your reality meter and wallow in the gorgeousness that is Rio, Antonio Fagundes and this sweet and funny story.
little gems.......2004-12-09
This was a film that was in Theaters for about two minutes and then found its way to VHS/DVD. Finally. It is truly an under-rated romantic comedy that I have found (because I seem to make everyone I know watch this) to appeal to many different people of many different ages. It isn't the most original film in the world but it is well-made. Aspects of the story are like a screw-ball comedy from the thirties and other times it is a little melancholy with the right touch of longing and it addresses that oh so universal theme of trying to find that 'someone'.
It is just a simple story of two lonely people trying to meet and each time there are distractions of other people trying to meet as well and facing dreary sides of potential love.
The soundtrack matches many of the moments of film perfectly; right down to the lyrics being sung in particular scene where two of the characters meet at the most inopportune moment.
It is obvious to see why the director dedicated the film to Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim and Francois Truffaut. The inspirations from both artists are apparent and it seems like this is a Valentine to both the men and to the director's wife (the lead character) Amy Irving.
This is a film that isn't going to bring out any new surprises or insights into the human psyche. It is a small little snap-shot of a lovely moment.
"Bossa Nova" is like the genre of music. Swingy, breezy, casual, sensual and delightful.
Rio As It Should Be.......2004-07-18
I was an English teacher in Brazil so this film resonated with me-how I wish I could have afforded a large apartment in Arpoador!
The film is a classic romantic comedy in the American style, which is the only quibble I had with it. It seemed to me that they were explicitly trying to appeal to the American market and that left me feeling that there was something dishonest at the core of the film.
Nevertheless, taken on its own terms it is very pleasant with characters one can easily identify with. Its view of Rio, as a city reminiscent of Honolulu, is laugh-inducing to anyone who has lived there but still serves the film well. When the soccer player left his brand new expensive sports car in the street, without a brigade of bodyguards to watch over it, I gasped involuntarily but soon got over it.
I sound critical of Rio but really I loved it and this film evokes the best of it without getting bogged down in irrelavant social commentary.

Ughhhhh........2007-07-27
I was so disappointed with this film. I search out and buy everything I can find on Baden Powell. Most of the time, sadly the result is pretty bad but this one is almost unwatchable. I gave this a 3 only because it is about Baden Powell and there is not that much out there on him. Otherwise I would have sunk it to a one.
This director was more fascinated with filming Powell's eyeglasses, mustache and leg scratching then in giving us good visuals of a great guitar player. So much was lost in this film. It is a terrible shame since Powell is gone that this guy squandered this chance to document his playing better.
This is art gone wild and horribly astray
Baden Powell Live.......2006-03-09
Excelent performance, say no more. For those who love Baden Powell, this is a oustanding recording. Truly recommended.

Fabulous live performance by two virtuosos.......2007-08-31
This is by far one of the best music DVD's I have ever had the pleasure of watching and owning. The DVD is a recording of a live performance by the 2 vocal/ instrumental masters Ana Carolina and Seu Jorge. The DVD includes wonderful additional scenes from before and after the show, including a get together in a typical local Brasilian bar after the show, filled with spontaneous singing and playing by the two artists and their friends.
The show includes long solo segments by each one of the artists, starting with Jorge and ending with Ana Carolina. The mid-segment is where the show comes to a climax with an incredible live collaboration between the two artists. Both artists play various guitars as well as bass and percussion. On several songs, a cello player joins them, and on one song Jorge plays clarinet as Ana Carolina plays guitar and sings. One of the most exciting songs starts with virtuoso bass playing by Ana Carolina, of an incredibly complex and somewhat funky bass line, to which she adds complex and intense melody. Jorge joins in harmonizing with his perfectly matching voice and playing his guitar, to form an intense musical experience.
The skills and musicianship level of these two performers, is world class. The level of the compositions and arrangements does not fall behind either. I highly recommend this DVD.
