The rich, textured chemistry of Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer remains a pleasure in this two-episode reunion special of the beloved British sitcom As Time Goes By, the ongoing story of a couple that lost touch in their youth and rediscovered their love later in life. Made three years after the last season but starting right where the last episode left off, Part 1 begins with Jean (Dench, Mrs. Brown) feathering the nest for grandchildren, even though Lionel (Palmer, He Knew He Was Right) points out that neither Judy (Moira Brooker) nor Sandy (Jenny Funnell) have gotten pregnant yet. It turns out that Judy and Alistair (Philip Bretherton) have been trying, with no results, and Judy suspects the problem may be Alistair--who is wildly overcompensating to prove his virility. Meanwhile, Sandy is upset because Harry (David Michaels) seeks a promotion that may put him in harm's way. And in the middle of all this, Lionel gets a very unexpected visitor from Africa.

If you're unfamiliar with As Time Goes By, this is not the place to start--the great pleasure to be had from these episodes comes from having watched the wonderful development of these characters over the nine previous series. As ever, the humor is subtle, gentle, but always psychologically apt and acted with deft aplomb. Dench and Palmer are compelling and delightful as a married couple who may find each other exasperating yet never fall out of love. Also included are outtakes from throughout the previous series and a short but charming documentary that follows the creation of an episode--the marriage of Judy and Alistair--from the first read-through to the final filming in front of an audience. Fans will be thrilled to get a glimpse of Bob Larbey and Sydney Lotterby, the two men who respectively wrote and directed every single episode of the show from the beginning. --Bret Fetzer

Description

The lyrically funny romance of Jean and Lionel continues its whimsical course in the Reunion Specials as Jean Pargetter's (Dame Judi Dench) great anticipation for grandchildren is revealed much to husband Lionel's (Geoffrey Palmer) dismay. With son-in-law Alistair and daughter Judy having problems things don't look too promising. But will Jean's dream of becoming a grandmother come true when Sandy and her husband Harry return from Canada?

4 out of 5 stars Great Show.......2007-07-12

This was a special anniversary made for PBS. I was a fan of the show and this only airs on PBS when they are begging for money. I am really happy that I was able to get the DVD. It's a great series.

I am upset though that the DVD menu didn't have a Play All Episodes option so you have to restart the show in the middle. They show the whole program in one go on PBS, why did they split it up on the DVD?

5 out of 5 stars Best thing around.......2007-06-11

I am so glad that I purchased this DVD set. I just love to watch BBC Comedies and this one is just so enjoyable to watch over and over again. If you like to watch reruns, you'll have to buy this set.

Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Lionel and Jean ... one last look! As Time Goes By - Reunion Special.......2007-06-11

For those addicted to that Holland Park couple, former British Army Second Lieutenant Lionel Hardcastle and nurse-turned-secretarial-agency owner, Jean Pargetter, and the members of their household, the "As Time Goes By - Reunion Special" affords one last look. As superbly acted and produced as all of the episodes from the nine season series, we get another chance to say goodbye to these delightful characters. Best watched after viewing all of the seasons' episodes again.

Based on the bestseller by Whitney Otto, this film seemed to miss all the poetry and the ephemeral charms of the wispy novel by trying to make a concrete movie out of it. Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse (who made a similar hash out of A Thousand Acres), the film centers on Winona Ryder, who is debating her impending marriage and decides to make up her mind while spending the summer with her grandmother (Ellen Burstyn). This leads to a variety of encounters with Grandma and her sewing circle (which includes Anne Bancroft, Kate Nelligan, and Maya Angelou, among others), who reminisce about men, love, and marriage. It's put together piecemeal, like a quilt, but the parts add up to a fragmented, unsatisfying whole, despite some solid acting. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars loved this movie.......2007-08-30

This is definitely a chick-flick. A hormonally-induced celebration unlike any other. Very sweet and poignant. Ms. Ryder is perfectly cast and the rest of the cast is brilliant. A MUST SEE. Highly recommend it if you have not seen it.

5 out of 5 stars A "Feel Good" movie women can relate to.......2007-08-28

I have seen the movie and subsequently read the book, years ago. They are both distinct entities. The movie is a "feel-good" movie, with "satisfying" painful moments and happy ones.

It is a great challenge for movie directors to do justice to books made into movies, because they are completely two distinct art forms. Movies made from books generally are an entity of their own, which can be a total delight if done well. Not only can they enhance the book, they can totally bring it to life in a very memorable way. This one meets that test, as does (in my opinion) "Cold Mountain" and "Fried Green Tomatoes".

The most satisfying aspect of this movie for me is the recurrent theme of forgiveness. Each of the main characters faces a situation where forgiveness is desperately needed, either from someone else or themselves. That's what this movie is really all about for me. We all need forgiveness for our mistakes, which we don't always get. That's why it's nice to watch it happen for someone else. Thank you to the makers of this movie. It made me "feel good"!

This has always been a favorite of mine & now I'm happy to own it!

5 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS MOVIE!.......2007-05-15

This movie has to be one of the best. It shows marriage to be what it really is, and that doesn't mean a fairytale ending. It's a movie I'd show to any of my friends and I would say an all time favorite of mine. It's a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie........2007-04-12

I purchased this movie for the simplicity of it and all of the beautiful women who were featured in the movie, notably Maya Angelou, Jean Simmons, and the other beautiful ladies in this film along with Winona Ryder. It's a movie I will watch again and again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars easy to learn.......2007-07-12

This dvd is wonderful and easy to follow. It is very easy to learn because the steps are repeated and shown at different angles. I watched the electric slide portion and learned it very quickly. I have been to weddings where people are doing these dances, but never had anyone to show me how to do them--this is the perfect solution. I only wish he had actually played the electric slide song, instead of an alternate one. It's great!

4 out of 5 stars This DVD was easy to follow and a lot of fun.......2007-06-01

Shawn Trautman is great in this instructional DVD. His instruction was easy to follow and a lot of fun. I recommend this DVD to anybody wanting to learn basic line dancing.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent dvd from Shawn Trautman.......2007-05-25

Shawn Trautman has done a great job of breaking the dances on this dvd down into easily remembered bite-sized chunks that don't overwhelm a person and that's quite a feat considering the sheer number of dances covered on this dvd. You definitely get your money's worth. The camera angles work well and Shawn's instruction is low key and patient without being boring.

Of course, the best part for me personally is that you can always watch the dvd again and again if that's what it takes for you to "get" a certain part of the dance and nobody's going to get worn out or impatient with you.

So if you've longed to get up and join in the fun when people start dancing, but haven't because you think you're too much of a klutz this is a perfect place to start. Most highly recommended.

Btw, my fiancee and I also own the Slow Dance dvd (for my upcoming nuptials) and we both absolutely loved it as well.

5 out of 5 stars Makes line dancing really easy.......2007-05-20

My last experience with line dancing was a disaster, so I'm glad I followed through with this one. It was very easy to follow along with and I liked the fact that it wasn't overdone. I could see the instructor's feet as well as his body, and the steps were easy to follow with some good variations to throw in to make it more interesting. This is not an aerobics DVD, but if you want to learn how to do the dances to go out and get and have fun line dancing this is a really good one to learn from.

5 out of 5 stars Party Line Dances.......2007-05-05

I am very pleased with Shawn's DVD. He breaks the steps down into manageable parts. I also like the steps shown from the different angles. This DVD is a must for all beginners.

Don Bluth's An American Tail is based on the story of a young Russian mouse who is separated from his family in America and who later heads with his reunited kin out to the American West. It's pleasant, though not spectacular, and has its greatest problems in story development. Steven Spielberg produced with an eye toward creating animation hits outside of Disney, and he and Bluth certainly took a big step in that direction here. Kids like it a lot, and adults will warm to the sound of various familiar voices, such as Dom DeLuise as Tiger and Madeline Kahn as Gussie Mausheimer. It's also the source of the pop single "Somewhere Out There." --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Watch The Secret of NIMH.......2006-07-26

After seeing The Secret of NIMH Steven Spielberg wantedd to do a collaboration with Don Bluth. While An American Tale is okay, I must say Don Bluth did a much better job when on his own.
The Secret of NIMH remains a hidden treasure to those who find it.

4 out of 5 stars This Movie is alright!.......2006-06-18

I had fun going back to my childhood memories. There is a favorite scene I have. 5 Words. THE GIANT MOUSE OF MINSK!

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Classic Animated Film ..........2005-04-22

From director Don Bluth (The Secret of NIMH) this beautiful animated film comes a "tail" like no other. This story is about a little mouse named Fievel taking a "once in a lifetime" journey to America from Russia to escape the cats. They think by going to America there are no cats and can have a better life for their families. Upon their travels poor little Fievel becomes seperated from his family while arriving in New York.

During his adventures he meets up with wonderful characters such as: Tiger (Dom DeLuise), Tony Toponi, Bridget, Honest John, Gussie Mausheimer (Madeline Kahn), Digit, Henri (Christopher Plummer) & more!

This film also had some wonderful feature and ground breaking award winning songs such as:

There Are No Cats in America
Never Say Never
Somewhere Out There
Somewhere Out There - James Ingram & Linda Ronstadt
Duo

Before Disney's beautiful Pixar films came to the big screen, there was the breathtakingly beautiful and realistic animation by Don Bluth and Steven Spielberg productions. It may be a little out dated for most, but it's truly a classic animated film with wonderful song's & colorful characters told in an original story.

The DVD: Is very sweet as well it has sing-a-long song's, cute triva games for the kids, and more!

All Dogs Go To Heaven is a musical, animated exploration of the fundamental conflict between good and bad and of the notions of caring and friendship. While all dogs may be welcome in heaven, the open admission policy doesn't necessarily ensure that a dog is worthy of, or even ready to accept his heavenly blessing. When criminal dog Charlie Barker (Burt Reynolds) and his sidekick Itchy (Dom DeLuise) escape from the dog pound, it isn't long before they realize that former business partner-in-crime Carface (Vic Taybak) has turned against them. Carface puts a permanent end to the partnership by killing Charlie, but Charlie ascends to heaven only to spurn his promised life devoid of surprises and fight to return to a life of vengeance, danger, and adventure on earth. When Charlie realizes that Carface has been using the animal-talking talents of young orphan girl named Anne-Marie (Judith Barsi) to further the success of his gambling business, Charlie steals her away and starts his own lucrative business venture. Charlie and Anne-Marie begin to become friends, but Anne-Marie's strong sense of what is right conflicts with Charlie's complete lack of moral standards and puts their friendship at risk. Worse, Charlie's quest for revenge threatens his own life as well as the lives of his friends Anne-Marie and Itchy. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Description

Set in 1939 New Orleans, this colorful, song-filled story centers on Charles B. Barkin, a roguish German Shepherd with the charm of a con man and the heart of a marshmallow. Out for revenge against his double-crossing former partner, a cigar-chomping pit bull known as Carface, Charlie finds himself guardian to a lonely little orphan named Anne-Marie. Her astounding ability to talk to animals leads this unlikely pair on an adventure packed with thrills, laughs, tears and true love.

I remembered that it was a little sad, but I forgot how much as the years went by. i recently bought it for my daughter and decided to watch it again before she did, and I'm glad I did. It's a wonderful movie with a good message, but she's only 2 and I think I won't let her watch this until she's 5 or so. I'll also watch it with her and talk to her about it afterwards.

2 out of 5 stars A luciously animated but unpleasant and inconsistent misfire from a fine animator........2007-05-17

Around the late 1970's, animator Don Bluth, frustrated with the output his company, Disney was churning, defected from the Mouse House to form his own studio. His first production, THE SECRET OF NIMH, was a brilliant feature that still holds up well to this day. This was followed by AN AMERICAN TAIL and THE LAND BEFORE TIME, both of which were made under the involvement of Steven Spielberg and were commercially successful. Although none of those two films had the dark adult appeal of NIMH, they still are very charming, enjoyable features for both children and grown-ups. But before long, Don Bluth had his first major misfire with ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN; critics were especially harsh on this film, and matters weren't helped by the fact that it opened alongside Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID.

Considering that the movie has such a friendly-sounding title, one would expect ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN to be pleasant family fare. Instead Bluth provides a surprisingly dark story involving gambling, deceit, crime, mistreatment, and murder. That itself is not a problem for an animated feature per say, but it does call into question over whether the film is for children. On the other hand, it's hard to say whether adults will find much to enjoy in ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN. In short, it's a movie with a major identity crisis.

Set in a dreary junkyard of New Orleans, the movie starts out when Charlie B. Barkin, a rough-and-tumble German shepherd, is run over by a car courtesy of his former gambling casino partner, a nasty, cigar-puffing pitbull, Carface. Before you know it, Charlie finds himself in heaven, albeit by default. Here a whippet angel, Annabelle, tells him that "all dogs go to heaven because unlike people, dogs are usually loyal and kind." This line represents the confused nature of the movie, since the dogs in the movie, the whippet aside, are presented as anything but.

Upon realizing that he's been murdered, Charlie steals his way back to Earth and plots to get even with Carface. With the reluctant help of his dachshund pal Itchy, Charlie "rescues" Carface's prize, AnneMarie, a human girl who can talk to animals (in order to predict who will win the rat races). Charlie claims that he will help the little cutie find her a family, but in reality he is using her skills to win fortunes at the race so that he can build a more elaborate casino of his own to bring Carface down. Although he refuses to admit it, Charlie does grow to love AnneMarie...

The concept of the story isn't as problematic as the execution. Aside from the human girl AnneMarie and a flamboyant musical alligator who appears about three-quarters through (with the vocal pipes of Ken Page), none of the other characters emerge as likeable, nor frankly, are even worth caring about. Unfortunately, that also applies to Charlie; in trying to make him an anti-hero, the script (composed by more than ten writers) only succeeds in rendering the character TOO unlovable. As such, the audience feels no empathy for Charlie, and worse, his redemption at the end of the movie does not come across as convincing. (Further damaging to the character is the disappointingly uncharismatic vocal performance from Burt Reynolds.)

Besides the lack of an endearing lead, the movie's other problem is in the structure of the story. The slowly-paced plot jumps all over the place and makes a habit of throwing in extra scenes which serve no purpose but to pad out the movie's running time. The aforementioned musical alligator (who resides in a danky sewer infested with native rats) seems to have been thrown in from nowhere, as does a scene where Charlie tries to show his generosity to AnneMarie by feeding a pack of pastel-colored pups pizza. The whole screenplay feels like a rough first draft; a bit more polish could have made this a tighter, impactful story.

Matters are not helped by the lackluster musical numbers by Charlie Strouse and T.J. Kuenster (AnneMarie's song and the gator's ballad are the only good ones; the latter in particular benefits from Ken Page's mellifluous vocal) or the uneven voice cast. As mentioned, Burt Reynolds' stiff and lifeless Charlie detracts from his already unlikeable character even further (the only exception is a fiery confession to Itchy about his true intentions toward the end). Dom DeLuise as Itchy is pretty good, but he's had better roles, notably Tiger in AN AMERICAN TAIL and Jeremy in THE SECRET OF NIMH. Ken Page, as mentioned, is awesome in anything he does, but his character has such a small part that his overall contribution is unremarkable at best. Similarly wasted are Loni Anderson (as a collie who once sired a litter with Charlie), Melba Moore, and Charles Nelson Reilly. Judith Barsi as AnneMarie is probably the only voice that comes across as truly memorable, partially because her character is the sole legitimately likeable one in this depressing and joyless show.

Barsi aside, the only real positive about ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN is the animation. Technically, this film has some of the most imaginative visuals from Bluth's team (by 1980's standards, that is), particularly a frightening scene where Charlie has a nightmare about ending up in a fiery underworld ruled by a gargantuan satanic canine-demon. If anything, the movie is more of a triumph of animation than storytelling.

On the whole, however, I cannot recommend ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN as good entertainment. Even though I recognize that the movie has its fans and the climax does admittingly provide some energy and a moving conclusion, the overall package is not in the same league as Bluth's better efforts. Animation buffs will marvel at the lush artistry, but by the time it's over, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN could very well leave a bad taste in your mouth.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES of DVD... ALL Dogs..........2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.

I would recommend this for young children. It does have quite a few concepts that are not appropriate, but are presented in a way that is way over the heads of children adn does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent.

5 out of 5 stars Good but dark.......2007-01-13

I first saw this movie when I was about 8 years old. Even though it was rated G there were several parts in this movie that scared the daylights out of me and gave thousands of nightmares for several years after I saw it the first time. This movies content has several impropriate content stuff in it for those under thirten. This includes contents of gambling drinking, lying, stealing, revenge, murder, kidnapping and other. I don't recomend leting any under thirteen watch this movie unless there supermature or super supervised. The two most intense parts in this movie were the dream seqeunce when the main characters a German shephard Charlie dreams he is pulled down into hell by a Tornado. The other part that scared me the most was when Charlie and Ann Merry are captured by these native mice and for reasons never explained are offered as scarfices to a Shamu size alligator. For those of you that have young sibglings under 13 the All dogs Christmas charol maybe the only all dogs movie they may be able to watch. You don't have to listen to what I say but I thought I'd just warm you so you might not have nigtmares until you are in your mid teens. I must go now have a nice day.

5 out of 5 stars So much more than a cartoon!.......2006-12-22

As a child, there was no better cartoon than `All Dogs go to Heaven', since I was such a dog lover. As a child you watch a cartoon for the animation not for the story. As an adult though you tend to get more out of films like this because, while being a cartoon, `All Dogs go to Heaven' is so much more. With a moral that is so profound films of today tackle it over and over, this film succeeds mainly because we are given a timeless lesson in the most unlikely of places.

The story revolves around Charlie (voiced by Burt Reynolds) and his partner in crime Itchy (voiced by Dom DeLuise) who are murdered by crime lord Carface (voiced by Vic Taybak). After ascending to heaven only to return back to earth in order to live a life of crime, Charlie comes across Anne-Marie (voiced by Judith Barsi), a young girl who is being used by Carface to further his gambling efforts. At first stealing her away for his own selfish gain, Charlie begins to form a strong friendship with Anne-Marie that is soon compromised by not only his own morally corrupt tendencies, but also the growing dangers of Carface and his bloodlust towards Charlie.

Yes, as some have mentioned this cartoon borders on the dark overtones, but remember that the reason this is so `scary' if you should so call it is because as adults we can see the truth inside the sad story, but as children they will miss that entirely and will be absorbed in the animation and the `cute little puppies'...I guaranty it. I watched this almost everyday when I was a toddler...and I slept fine. It's only now that the story really haunts me.

Marking a welcome return to the breezy style of Thelma & Louise, Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men reminds us that the director of Gladiator is equally adept with quirky comedies and offbeat characters. Smoothly adapted from the novel by Eric Garcia and set amidst the sunlit, 1950s-style architecture of L.A.'s San Fernando Valley, this gently dramatic comedy centers on Roy (Nicolas Cage), a divorcée whose career as a con artist is complicated by: (1) his ongoing struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder, which manifests itself through various quirks and rituals; (2) a wily partner (Sam Rockwell) whose criminal ambitions are greater than Roy suspects; and (3) the arrival of 14-year-old Angela (Alison Lohman), claiming to be the daughter he's never known. Turns out she's got a knack for dad's profession, and that turns Matchstick Men into a multilayered comedy with unexpected twists and surprising revelations. To say more would spoil the fun; suffice it to say that Hans Zimmer's playful score and a Sinatra-laced soundtrack are perfect complements to Cage's engaging eccentricities. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Stunning drama and twist ending thriller. Underated film........2007-09-01

Well, I rented the movie to see how Nicholas cage potrays con man as he looks innocent and sincere guy in his appearance. After seeing the film, I was just thrilled and surprised this didn't touch oscars. Nicholas plays a con guy who misleads people by tactful stealing, selling water filters promising fake gift certificates and non-existent shows. He make hell of money which he keeps in his bank locker. His protege is Sam Rockwell, a foul mouthed guy. Cage suffers from Panic attacks, Agoraphobia, OCD and his rituals involve cleaning, Counting 3 when closing and opening doors and also Trouttes syndrome. He takes treatment from a cocky psychiatrist. All of sudden his 14yr daughter brilliantly done by Lohman appears in his lonely life and he loves her though he starts of rather ackwardly. The father daughter relationship is so heartening and cute to watch. Cage teaches his daughter his con tricks and she gets involved in a big cheating episode. The melo-drama movie ends thrilling all of us. No spoilers here !
Nicholas cage does very complex roles of being a con-man, father/daughter relationship and his Anxiety disorder with unbelievable ease. The film could have been easily spoiled and unrealistic but for his acting. He deserves Oscar for this. The ending finds his calm and mature man conquering his inner devils. Lohman is 25yrs old and it is unbelievable how she potrayed a 14yr old. She just looks like 14yr old unless we see her in the end of the movie where she is transformed. I wondered if it was a special effect ! She acts with effortless ease displaying teenage emotions of naughtiness, innocence, affection and bickering. A treat to watch her.
Entire plot is gripping with new plot starting every 15 minutes. Did I say it is drama movie which ends as a twist ending thriller ? An underated movie worth seeing !

5 out of 5 stars Matchstick Men Has A Great Twist Ending..........2007-06-11

Matchstick Men is a widescreen DVD adapted from the Eric Garcia novel of the same name. The movie stars Nicolas Cage and his close friend Sam Rockwell, and introduces audiences to Alison Lohman. The disc also includes some nice extras, such as Tricks of the Trade: Making Matchstick Men.

A glance at early scenes reveals Roy Waller (Cage) as a conman with OCD. He's partnered with Frank (Rockwell) -- both pose as FBI to solicit account numbers and signatures to drain their marks. Franks adverse reaction to pills nearly sinks them. Frank also visits the supermarket to see Kathy (Kelley.)

The routine Roy follows is disrupted when his medication falls down the drain at the kitchen sink and his condition confines him to the house. His source for the pills has also fled town; he needs a new shrink to write prescriptions. This is how we meet Dr. Harris Klein (Altman.)

Caught in the plight of talking to Klein to score pills, Roy reveals details of an old marriage -- and that he may have a child he's never seen. The good doctor intervenes, and after some phone calls he arranges a meeting between twelve year old daughter Angela (Lohman) and Roy.

His first meeting with the girl clicks, but she ruins a flimflam when she materializes on Roy's doorstep. He claims he's an antiques dealer, but leaving her alone in his house allows snooping (bundled cash, guns!) that uncovers lies. Frank and Roy also ensnare Chuck Frechette (McGill) at the Spearmint Rhino.

Some of the outstanding scenes in Matchstick Men occur only after Angela and Roy get into an argument, and she persuades him to teach her a con. He explains the system of the con this way: 1. Never work near where you live, 2. Don't write anything down, and 3. Be flexible.

The father and daughter pull off the con effortlessly, after visiting a convenience store (for a lottery ticket) and the laundromat to find a mark. There they run into a Little Old Lady (Grant) whom Angela quickly convinces to split the proceeds with because she's technically too young to gamble legally.

In case you're worried, Roy makes his daughter return the money. The next several chapters find Frank and Roy trying to finalize a currency conversion scam they've plotted against strip-club owner Chuck. Roy also discovers that having a daughter has made him more attractive to Kathy, the sexy supermarket checkout woman.

Crafty or not, when Roy rips Chuck off at the airport (using Angela as a distraction) things turn dicey. A dangerous chase through the parking garage ensues. Unfortunately, Angela was captured on CCTV in the bar; Roy also discovers her juvenile record after quizzing. Scared, Roy dumps Angela at her mother's.

Klein comes into play again when Roy suffers another harrying OCD attack, and he's run out of pills. Since Klein is out of the office on weekends, Roy makes a mad dash to the DeSoto Pharmacy looking for Prefex tablets. The altercation with the pharmacists is one pinnacle of this DVD.

Most of the cons pulled by Roy are safe, but after he's scammed Chuck out of $[...], Chuck turns up in Roy's tidy living room with a pistol pointed at Angela and Roy, and a bloodied, beaten Frank in tow. When a gun goes off, it's unbelievable who pulls the trigger.

Essentially what happens next is that Chuck gets shot -- by Angela. Roy protects her by putting her in a car headed to her mother's, driven by Frank, with instructions for Frank to never return, because he intends to drive Chuck to the hospital and take the rap for the shooting.

Now that you've heard about this heartwarming film with a wonderfully human twist ending, I hope you buy, rent or seek it out. Matchstick Men has proved to be one of Cage's more underappreciated efforts -- that's unfair since the emotion and the storytelling were so obviously clear. This DVD was really entertaining!

Carl Reiner made this enjoyable romantic farce about a divorced couple who commence an affair at their daughter's wedding. Reiner lets the idea bounce around the story's setting and characters so that the full comic effect of the illicit relationship can be felt more chaotically, building on its own irony. Bette Midler and Dennis Farina are quite believable and likable as the not-so-estranged-anymore couple, and Paula Marshall is very good as their exasperated daughter. Not a masterpiece, but one of Reiner's best films in years, with a distinctively European flavor to the comedy. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, cast and crew bios, theatrical trailer, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

I like Bette Midler more as a comedian than a singer, so it's no surprise that she shines in this comedy about the estranged parents of a bride-to-be who rediscover their passion for each other. I've watched it several times and enjoy it each time.

Free spirit Molly De Mora (Paula Marshall) is about to settle down and marry the conservative Keith Marks (James Denton) son of Senator Marks.

There is just one caveat or maybe two. Molly wants to elope and warns Keith that the last thing he wants to do is to invite her feuding parents who have been divorced for 14 years.

Warning not headed both father (Dennis Farina) and mother (Bette Midler) are forced to gather and nature takes it course. After an explosive confrontation we find where Molly gets her free spirit.

This is where the fun begins as all the characters meet and mix to confront the situation.

5 out of 5 stars Wo can resist a movie with Bette?.......2006-12-07

I love this movie. It is such great escapism!
They all play good roles and although not the most refined screenplay ever written, it has all the stuff that a feel good movie needs. I especially love when Bette sings that beautiful song in the restaurant; 'Somewhere Along the Way'. I adore her voice and what a great all-rounder she is. There are very few true divas that can act, sing, dance and be comedic as well.
This is one of my all time favorites for a good laugh and I have to admit that most of my favorites were never box office hits.

Parker Posey was the It Girl of independent film in early 1997, the year this film (along with three or four others in which she starred) all played at the Sundance Film Festival. This film was the toughest of the bunch to embrace, based as it was on a self-consciously quirky off-Broadway play about Thanksgiving at the home of a particularly strange family. Oldest son Josh Hamilton comes home from college for the holidays, with fiancée Tori Spelling in tow. What he hasn't told her is that his twin sister, Jackie-O (played by Posey), thinks she's Jackie Kennedy--or that he and Jackie-O have shared more than, shall we say, filial affection. Posey is wonderfully edgy and she and Hamilton spar with entertaining vigor, but you still have to cope with writer-director Mark Waters's pretentious script. --Marshall Fine

1 out of 5 stars should be called the house of no!!.......2007-03-09

this was gawdawful!! the characters strain to be eccentric. they try soooo hard to be interesting and odd that they, ironically, become forgettable. there is not one particular trait in any character that stands out. parker posey is supposed to emulate jackie kennedy. none of jackie's personality is reflected, nor are her mannerisms, nor does she get quoted. parker posey's character merely dresses like her. ooooohh! really pushing the boundaries! and then they seemingly throw in the incestous affair as the last resort bait to capture our attention, kind of like they have nothing else in their tackle box. what a waste of a great cast!! it's completely disappointing as a funny / entertaining movie, but it beats watching prime time tv.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-10

This movie may not have the most exciting plot or location, but the razor sharp dialogue more than makes up for it! Quirky, intellegent, and funny.

3 out of 5 stars House Of Cards.......2006-10-19

The House Of Yes (horrible title!) is a bizarre, dark comedy with much to like, and dislike - ultimately it feels like an interminable, one-gadget shaggy dog story.

The plot is loopy; suspension of disbelief is one thing, dumb is another. (Why is it that criminal insanity among society's elite seems somehow reasonable to audiences, and excuses shabby construction?)

A wealthy and oddly detached widow has raised her twins, (one male, one female), and their dimwitted half-brother, in an elegant, stately home. The woman is unapologetically vague about the fathers of these children, except to say they were definitely not her late husband. The twins are inappropriately close, even for twins. The girl, who may have killed the father, has an obsession with Jackie-O. The boy twin, attempting to flee this unholy dynamic, has brought his fiancee to "meet the family." The girl twin is pathologically threatened, causing her insanity to kick up a few notches.

This synopsis may sound far-fetched but it barely scratches the surface. Happily there are some splendid performances and snappy dialogue. Parker Posey is downright brilliant as Jackie-O, an extreme part she might easily have overdone. Posey gets many of the best lines and delivers them with a chilling combination of intelligence, madness, malice, and terror.

Tori Spelling is a pleasant surprise. As "the outsider" who wanders into an unsafe, horrific world, she adroitly brings a sweet rationality that is both much needed and overmatched. Also delightful to see Genevieve Bujold, whose smooth performance is so assured it almost makes this absurd environment seem believable. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Josh Hamilton struggle with two-dimensional roles.

The film suffers from "Glengarry Glen Ross Syndrome," it's based on a play, (Wendy MacLeod), action (such as it is) occurs in one setting, and it's entirely dialogue-driven. But in Glengarry Glen Ross you had memorable characters, an interesting situation, spellbinding dialogue, and Mamet did the film adaptation. In THOY you have cardboard characters, ridiculous situations, dialogue that ricochets between witty and ploddingly pompous, and director Mark Waters did the screen adaptation. To see how a great play becomes a great movie, get Sleuth or Deathrap.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious dark comedy.......2005-12-26

The was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. There were quite a few awkward chuckling moments, but a ton of hilarious, quick-witted dialog delivered extremely well by the actors involved. I love dark comedy, and I feel like this movie was dark enough to suite my tastes, but not so dark that I felt uncomfortable, which is a fine line. This isn't a laugh-out-loud movie (though I did laugh audibly), but more of a "He he" movie (if that makes sense)... I haven't seen/read the play, so I can't comment on how closely it matched or if it was what I expected, but I do want to see it performed now!!

Parker Posey does an amazing job as "Jackie-O" in this movie - it would have been pretty easy to be drastically over-the-top in this role, but Posey goes just over-the-top enough to play the role to a T. I thought Freddie Prince Jr. and Tori Spelling did a great job as well. Their roles didn't lend themselves to be done "well" (in a thespian sort of way), but they didn't take themselves too seriously, which made the characters funny. It was great to see them branch out.

5 out of 5 stars Comedie Noir -- Done Right........2005-11-28

Every once in awhile a cast comes together which actually does justice to what was already a wonderfully comedie noir script. The House of Yes is exactly that movie.

To overly simplify the plotline, there once were two twins. They had a sexual (read: incestual) relationship. One decided to be normal and left for the big city. He came out closer to normal. The other decided to stay behind. She went crazy. Their younger brother is none-too-bright. Their mother doesn't know if all her children are from the same man.

When the male twin returns home with his new fiancee for Thanksgiving, everything falls apart. Oh, did I mention they have an obsession with the Kennedy's?

This is not a Sinbad-style gag movie. This is a dark, funny movie. The casting was perfect. Parker Posey portrays perfectly (absent alliteration) a semi-psychotic woman who evinces both lunacy and feline lethality. Josh Hamilton is all the more disturbing for the degree of normalcy he brings to the role of Marty. Freddie Prinze Jr. plays the part he was born to: a half-witted simpleton. Tori Spelling plays the part SHE was born to: a half-witted simpleton who is actually more clueless than Freddie. Genevieve Bujold tops it all off with her disinterested matriarch character who -- after examing the situation -- casually notes that ''Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to baste the turkey and hide the kitchen knives.''

I leave you with two sets of quotes that should give you a taste for the dialoge, and let me state for the record that there is not one word in this film that doesn't have a joke or hidden subtext to it. It may be the best-written movie ever.

- Brian

Quotes taken from the Internet Movie Database.

Genevieve Bujold: What's that gun doing there?
Parker Posey: It's not a gun. It's a camera.
Genevieve Bujold: It's a gun.
Parker Posey: It's a camera that looks like a gun.
Josh Hamilton: Relax, Mama, it isn't loaded.
Genevieve Bujold: How do you know?
Josh Hamilton: I checked.
Genevieve Bujold: What's it doing there?
Parker Posey: Being gunlike, gunesque, gunonic.
Genevieve Bujold: Where did it come from?
Parker Posey: God?

-----

Tori Spelling: I don't think you're insane.
Parker Posey: You don't?
Tori Spelling: No.
Parker Posey: You don't think I'm an eensie weensie bit insane?
Tori Spelling: I don't think you're insane. I think you're just spoiled.
Parker Posey: [exasperated] Oh please, if everyone around here is going to start telling the truth, I'm going to bed.

When pistol-packing, chain-smoking granny Mabel "Madea" Simmons (Tyler Perry) invites her family over for the weekend, chaos is sure to follow. First they gather for her sister Irene's funeral and then for the wedding of her granddaughter, Lisa (Sonya Evans). Naturally, nothing goes as planned. The rest of her extended family include daughters Cora (Tamela J. Mann) and Vickie (Pebbles Johnson), granddaughters Jackie (D'Atra Hicks) and Tina (Zakiya Williams), and irrepressible neighbor Mr. Brown (David Mann). The urban inspirational comedy, which was followed by popular spin-off Meet the Browns, takes place between the two events as family members attempt to heal their differences through quips, scriptures, and gospel-oriented numbers. Written, produced, and directed by Perry (who co-wrote the music and lyrics), Madea's Family Reunion was filmed in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana in February 2002. A feature film version starring Blair Underwood and Lynn Whitfield is planned for 2006. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

I enjoy all the Tyler Perry plays and movies that is why I purchased the item

5 out of 5 stars Madea Still in the House.......2006-07-31

I was really impressed and pleased with the fact that the Madea role was still true to form. I thought that being a movie would take away the real Madea role. But it didn't!!! Super. I really enjoyed it.

    4 out of 5 stars Matriarchy.......2006-07-04

We live out in the midwest, so when we saw this movie, we were struck by the style and elements this movie captured for not only Black Americans, but other minorities as well [including all of you of European ancestry, who don't think you have a culture too]. It was funny, but it has elements of pride in it about black people, that shows the value system and familial relationships that are tribal and beautiful. The scenes about the elders were breathtaking. They brought the women elders, grandmothers and great grandmothers into the circle at the family reuntion. Cecily Tyson and Maya Angelou added so much. I am pleased to recommend this movie, and you will be delightfully surprised, as we were. Your children should definitely watch it because we aren't aren't paying attention to our elders or doing things that include "Ceremony" to welcome our sacred children into our families.

    5 out of 5 stars all families.......2006-06-22

It's absolutely wonderful how Tyler is able to transcend all earthly families and show that we all have the same problems and we all need the same Savior

This is a wonderful, well written family movie. Admire Tyler Perry's GOD given talent very much. However, I will not order anything else from Amazon. Amazon mislead people by stating it was 2006 and Lynn Whitfield was in this DVD. Since then Amazon has change the ad, prior to they sold many DVD's under a false ad. Again the movie is fantastic.
