For a few years in the mid-1970s, thanks mostly to his collaboration with Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder was the hottest name in comedy. His films with Richard Pryor made him such a star that he was given the chance to write and direct--a big mistake. The nadir was this slow-moving, self-conscious Americanization of the French bedroom comedy Pardon Mon Affaire. Wilder plays an American executive who glimpses a gorgeous woman and turns his life and his marriage upside down in his misguided pursuit of an unattainable ideal. Heavy-handed sex farce doesn't get much help from Wilder, who does himself no favors as a director; LeBrock is a worthy object of obsession, but she deserves a better movie. --Marshall Fine

1 out of 5 stars old wilder creates a monstrosity.......2006-12-05

aaah, now this is a bad movie one can sink ones teeth into! possibly the nadir of gene wilders occasionally illustrious career, not to mention gilda radner, charles grodin, and joseph bologna (well, no -- he made "blame it on rio"). i would say its also the nadir of kelly le brocks career, but its probably the acme as well, so ill be kind. if the movie is remembered at all today, its for that stevie wonder song that i cant remember the name of ...

4 out of 5 stars Gene Wilder's wandering eye.......2005-08-30

There's something appealing about Gene Wilder, a certain je ne sais quoi. He's not sexy, that's for sure, but his sense of humor shines through even if he's silent. Something about him makes you smile with just the thought of him. This was the movie I always think of when someone says his name, even if it wasn't the all time greatest.

Gene Wilder falls for some mysterious stranger (a.k.a. The Woman In Red - hence the title) that sets him off on a tangent. Some would call it a midlife crisis. Infidelity is an ugly thing, but he makes it funny. He and his friends - especially Charles Groden - are a bunch of cutups and their antics are hilarious (that blind man routine!). His real life wife, Gilda Radner, made an appearance as the woman scorned while his wife is blissfully unaware of his wants. An often glossed over character is Shelly, the nice Jewish boy punk rocker who for some reason is hanging around their house a lot with his kids. He's creepy and weird, but harmless. In the end, he faces a big question that a lot of us face when it comes to fidelity vs. infidelity. I've had many conversations that mirror this exactly - "What the hell am I doing? I have a wonderful [fill in the blank] and I'm going to throw it away over a piece of ass?" And a lot of people do. But he wises up before it's too late. It'a lite hearted trip.

2 out of 5 stars The Woman in Trouble.......2005-01-22

This mildly amusing story is dragged down by an un-funny Gene - he just can't pull this one out with his usual "dumb act." This flick would be a big zero if it weren't for Kelli's looks (...)

5 out of 5 stars A Blockbuster!.......2004-12-09

Yep this is truly one of the most movies that's been put the same year I was born 1984. Like to say, this is a more comedy classic which I would say it features my favorite comedienne of all-time, the late Gilda Radner.

I actually love this movie since I picked up the soundtrack to the film by my man Stevie Wonder who earned an Oscar for his hit song "I Just Called To Say I Love You". Ol' Stevie put out a soundtrack that is phenomenal.

It has a all-star cast incl. Charles Grodin, Judith Ivey, Kelly Le Brock, Joseph Bolonga, and most definitely Gene Wilder (who wrote, direct, and star in this feature film).

I first purchase this on VHS one time and maybe one day I'll own it on both DVD and VHS. I officially lost the video so can't wait to get another one.

First of all, this is my favorite picture I watch when I was 11 years old or somethin' like that.

4 out of 5 stars The title says it all!.......2004-09-24

Funnyman Gene Wilder delivers an awesome performance in this film. Kelly Le Brock plays the title role. Even Charles Grodin and the late Gilda Radner give great moral support. There's an incredible soundtrack of songs by R&B legend Stevie Wonder. One of them is his biggest all-time hit,I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU. He even performed a few bars of the hit song on an episode of NBC's The Cosby Show which he guest-starred as himself. I like IT'S YOU,Stevie's duet with Dionne Warwick. Some songs were performed solo by Warwick. One of them is MOMENTS AREN'T MOMENTS,which also appeared on her 1985 album,FRIENDS.

1 out of 5 stars Bootleg........2006-10-12

I did not like this because it is a bootleg. The film is great, but Red Sun is a bootleg "company" who are stealing the remastered versions from IVL DVDs made in Hong Kong. If you want the films, get the Thai releases that are all region or the HK IVL DVDs and don't buy the boots. Anyone that buys these discs are supporting the very reason why the US hasn't seen quality releases of these films for all these years ie bootleggars selling in legit stores. I honestly can't believe Amazon would allow this to be sold on here due to the chance of lawsuit by the Wienstein Company.

4 out of 5 stars Old "Skool" Kung Fu!!.......2006-07-02

This movie is entertaining from the start to finish,,are art of old school kung fu very apparent and all over this flick!! Importantly,,the picture sound quality very, very good. If you're a lover of the monkey kung fu,,this is definately a must have. The fight scenes are truly amazing. A must have for the collection for sure!!

5 out of 5 stars Still can't decide if I like this or deadly mantis more........2006-04-16

Well with lo lieh and Lau kar leung both in my opinion in one of their top 2-3 performances of their careers, I would have to go with this one.

Now the whole monkey kung fu thing didn't have to go to this extreme, but it still works and you have a true master at the helm both directing and starring in this one. He is such a great martial arts master he certainly makes any film he performs in an instant classic. The kid little monkey is the one who shines in this one. i don't really want to tell you the story at all btu I did want to mention that there is a very gruesome scene but they actually used a bloody puppet so I it didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth or nothin. The fights in this one are not as plentiful as some fu films but there are like 5-6 REALLY REALLY good fights, including an ending you are that is the best definitely.

Now the picture for the red sun release that i am reviewing is BREATHTAKING. The remastered uncut(109 min.) version is rich in color, and letterboxed. The english dub is perfect except for Lo Lieh and Kara Hui's voice that seems to be a bit hollow in the first half. If ANYBODY freaking reads this then I urge you to type in red sun searching in the dvd's on the search engine here on amazon. And all the old school fu movies that say red sun NOT RED COMPANY(like killer army), these are movies like Fists of the White Lotus REMASTERED beautifully. You people need to check this stuff out cause for fu fans like me, these are the very best version you can get. They must be affiliated with celestial(red sun), cause their trailers are only for remastered shaw flicks and also I saw five venoms under the red sun label so freaking check it out people. It is a lazy way to buy dvd's cause we ALL should get a region free dvd player, but I can continue to be lazy until I sbnatch up all of these.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Entertainment! Another Cat III Masterpiece of Edgy Entertainment..........2007-02-02

Billy Tang's 'Yeuk Saat' ('Red To Kill') is a wicked little gem. This film occupies a very disturbing, but thoroughly entertaining realm. I went into this film with high expectations. Needless to say, I was not let down in the least. They just don't make films like this in North America or Europe. 'Red To Kill' pushes the limits of acceptability brilliantly, and will no doubt leave even jaded viewers surprised and entertained...

Ben Ng's portrayal of a psychopathic rapist who falls in love with a retarded girl whom he had raped is amazing. There is just something about the main antagonist is these Cat III films (I am thinking of Mr. Ng & Anthony Wong) that borders on frightening. The level of mania, and the exuberance which with these fine actors execute scene after scene with obvious psychotic glee is spellbinding. Me and my girlfriend were blown away by how unbelievably psychotic and deranged Ben Ng was in this gem. He easily rivals Anthony Wong (from 'The Untold Story' and 'Ebola Syndrome') for cinema's most wicked and insane psychopath...

If you are familiar with Cat III films, you know what to expect- over-the-top violence and wicked rape scenes unflinchingly caught by the lens. I have witnessed many of these films in the past 6 months, and this is one of the better ones...

Some may take issue with the fact that the majority of this film takes place in a home for the retarded. To me, that made the film all the more entertaining. Perhaps if I believed in hell, I would go there; but damn, I sure got some cheap laughs out of this film. The retarded actors and actresses were highly amusing. Me and my girlfriend couldn't help from laughing out loud at numerous scenes...

At the same time, there were some very touching elements to this film. The scene after Ming-Ming (Lily Chung) got raped, when her fellow institution mates were crying and giving her gifts nearly brought a tear to my eye- it was incredibly touching (for real, I am not being facetious)...

I realize I haven't covered too many plot details in this little review/comment. You will have to watch this amazing and unforgettable film yourself if you want to know what happens. If you are a fan of extreme cinema (specifically Cat III films), you will very likely love this movie. From a cinema-obsessive who seeks out edgy entertainment, 'Red To Kill' comes highly recommended...

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, Graphic and Unforgiving.......2006-03-12

I have to agree with the previous reviewer who said that the graphic rape seens are brutal, unforgiving, and rewarding in every way for the sick-minded among us. However, I also agree with the person who said this doesn't get near the "Irreversible" category of permanent damage to the victims. The plot is pretty bizarre, but if you can swallow that, you may be in for a treat.

4 out of 5 stars unforgiving in every respect.......2005-02-26

First of all, let me tell you, this is NOT a date movie. This is the most brutal graphic rape movie I have ever seen, and also one that lingers in your mind long after it is over. For me, that's exactly what I want when I see a movie, one that leaves a lasting impression no matter how difficult the impression might be. I loved this movie, because it is very very well made, and the acting performances are incredible. Yes, the rapes are unforgiving in every respect, and the misery throughout the film is almost difficult to watch at times. This is not a gory movie, except for the last ten minutes, it is a very disturbing movie and it does have a fair amount of nudity, however it really needs to. "The Untold Story" and "Ebola Syndrome" offset much of the carnage with humor, but "Red to Kill" has absolutely NOTHING to smile about. It is totally and brutally serious from the first frame to the extremely nasty ending. The story is pretty simple, a psycho-rapist is on the loose and he's going after a mentally retarded young dancer. In the second graphic rape of the movie he does the deed to the young lady. Enter a female social worker who tries to help the victim, and dreams up a plan to get even with the rapist after he gets off in court because of a stupid technicality. Her plan succeeds to a certain extent, but not like she planned it, and the rapist comes after her full force. The actor who plays the rapist is absolutely sensational, and I might add, the musical score is perfect. The music adds so much to the all ready existing tension from all the horrific acts. The actress who plays the retarded girl is also amazing, one of the best performances on film you will ever see. To end this, this is a must-see movie for fans of this genre, and I'm just getting started myself. Not the gore associated with the two previous Cat III movies I watched, but something even more terrible and unrelenting, and an uneasy feeling that will not leave you anytime soon after you see it. "Red to Kill" is flatout a good movie, even considering the subject matter. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Not too disturbing....A truly boggling DVD.......2004-12-21

This one is a trip to say the least. It starts strange even from the menu (my menu's play button says "On Air"). Then we go steaming into the movie itself. A crazy housewife throws herself and her retarded son off a building. Cut to a mildly intense (and very exploitively shot) rape scene. Then we are experiencing the day to day happenings of a home for the retarded - where the head administrator is the rapist. I'm not really spoiling anything here. The movie lets this on about 20 minutes in.
The man that plays the rapist goes over the top, to say the least. At one point he stalks around his room, crazy and horny (wearing a jock strap, no less) fondling and strangling a mannequin.
The movie tries to hide its lust for exploitation under the guise of being a film about a serious subject. You can ultimately tell that it was filmed for the T and A. There's quite a bit during the two rape scenes. Also, the helpful teacher gets dolled up towards the end. Although her idea of being sexy is seductively drinking a clamdigger - celery included. But there is no nudity from her sadly (I think she's cute). And it is rather off putting to have the guy walking around in more revealing uderwear than the women. I mean, he's wearing a thong, for God's sake! Is this a Chinese metaphor for being "crazy and sexually rapacious"? You be the judge.
I will say, I have seen a lot of bizarre translations on Asian imports, but this one contains one of the classics. During a scene when an angry crowd is confronting the administrator out front of the home - a man yells in his face and says "You let me f*** and a** and I say your good, damn!" And he's supposed to be angry at this guy? Truly a hilarious moment. And people in the film refer to rapists as "sex lupines". I really don't know how to translate that one.
Ultimately a bizarre flick that doesn't deliver on much that it promises. The rape scenes are not too schocking (especially when compared to something like IRREVERSIBLE). I will say the last sequence is pretty gruesome. Fluorescent bulbs and table saws, anyone?
Ultimately, a lot of the acting comes off as B-grade. Some sickos out there - we are legion - might enjoy parts, but most would probably prefer to stay away.
I'm keeping my copy though....

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely pure.......2004-06-22

junk. It purports to be disturbing, and it kind of is, but it's more annoying, jumpy and stupid. This has been done far better and with more talent. The atrociously translated subtitles ("crash his penis!" "Your father is on a distant call"), though, do provide laughs.

1 out of 5 stars Gorehounds beware!!!.......2007-05-20

I would have liked to give Red Room no stars at all, but unfortunately you have to give it at least 1. That's 1 more star than it deserves. I bought this DVD thinking that it would be something similar to the infamous Guinea Pig series. Boy was I wrong! Yes, they are B-movies, but while Guinea Pig delivers exatly what it promises, this movie gives you nothing that it promises.

On the front cover, it warns the viewer that this movie contains graphic violence. That could not be further from the truth. What I got most out of this movie, was almost soft-core, excruciatingly fake sounding, sex-scenes, and IMPLIED scenes of disturbing violence. That's right. Implied NOT graphic.

Now, I am a big fan of japanese movies and Unearthed Films has released other good, very gory movies, like Guinea Pig and Aftermath. However, Red Room was not worth the $14.99 I paid for it, or the 68 minutes I spent watching it. Red Room is not worth a single cent of your money, or a second of your time.

The sad thing is, Unearthed Films probably realized this, which led to their false-advertising DVD cover. For shame, Unearthed Films, for shame. You disappoint me.

If you're looking for a movie with almost soft-core, fake-sounding porn scenes, than Red Room is for you. However, if you're looking for some graphic, gory, ultra-violence, than I suggest you watch Guinea Pig: The Devil's Experiment. It took away the bad taste in my mouth that Red Room left.

Professor Dennis Burke (Peter Coyote) wrote a sizzling erotic novel called Red Letters 20 years ago--but since then, his wife died from a protracted illness, and he's been fired from a job because of an affair with a student. So he's grateful to be given a second chance at a small California college where he lectures on Hawthorne... only all his students are more interested in Burke's writing than Hawthorne's. Burke starts receiving letters for the former resident of his apartment, letters that are from a woman in prison named Lydia (Nastassja Kinski of Your Friends and Neighbors) with a 30-year sentence for murder. Burke writes back, and their correspondence takes a turn for the intimate when she asks him to visit her. Burke isn't sure what he's getting into, and his life is only further complicated when the daughter of the college dean (Fairuza Balk, The Craft) starts making advances. Suddenly Lydia has escaped, his best friend (Jeremy Piven, Very Bad Things) is arrested for hacking into the prison computer system, and the dean suspects Burke of trifling with his daughter. Red Letters has all the makings of a classic Hitchcock film: a hapless hero who thinks he's smarter than he is, an unpredictable femme fatale, snaky plot twists, and an all-around excellent cast (also including Ernie Hudson from Ghostbusters and Udo Kier from My Own Private Idaho and The Kingdom). The movie loses focus at the very end, but until then it's a smart, well-written, subtle, and unpredictable film that actually gives its characters some depth and grit. Even the more implausible moments are fun and engaging. Well worth checking out. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars what a great cast.......2003-10-30

this movie sizzles with its great cast that spark and snap this thrilling, well thriller. Peter Coyote(Sphere) is a writer, Nastassja Kinski(Cold Heart, One Night Stand, Little Boy Blue and Cat People) is the one he writes to in prison and she meets him. Jeremy Piven(PCU, Judgment Night) is Coyotes friend, and Fairuza Balk(The Craft, The Island Of Dr. Moreau) is the girl infatuated with Coyote. the cast is great, no doubt, especially Piven(who is always great). you also got supporting cast members like Udo Kier(Blade, Barb Wire), Ernie Hudson(The Substitute, No Escape and Pauly Shore(In The Army Now, Son In Law). hang on

4 out of 5 stars Highly Underated.......2002-11-12

I started watching this movie with the assumpton that it was going to be very bad and not a good movie at all as I had heard from numerous other reviews and posts, etc. But I actually highly enjoyed this movie. It does have it's faults, yes, but still it is an entertaining movie to me and I think it could be to others too, if they would give it a chance. It does have a very low budget feel to it (not the faul of the director, Bradley Battersby, the music was changed without his permission and he was given only twenty days to shoot it or he would be fired) but these are all the fault of the producers who basically made everything that is cheesy about it that way. I have heard what the original plan for the movie was and that plan was very unique, but as mentioned above, it was not to be this way through not fault of anybody's except the producers. But again, a highy enjoyable movie with wonderful performances by Natassja Kinski and Peter Coyote (though he hams things up way too much). Good for a light laugh and some enjoyability.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly a waste of talent.......2001-03-11

Unfotunately, the talents of the cast are ill used. The story trys to be clever and sexually titallating, but mostly is just silly. The characters never seem real and the story less so. I am a big fan of both Ms. Kinski and Balk and wasting their talents in this tawdry thriller was very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars worth watching for one scene.......2001-02-06

the lenghty editorial review is accurate and recommends the film....I would agreee and add that there is a particular scene which is unusual....it involves a police line up with a witness and police on one side of the 1-way glass and the suspects on the other...I won't divulge what happens, but the film is worth seeing just for this surprise.
