While the movie itself was a little hokey, Hugh Laurie was delightful in his leading role of the banker flying to Rio to meet his "dream samba girl."

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Surprise........2007-01-29

I checked out Girl From Rio as a pre-House Hugh Laurie fan and a dance enthusiast. It's turned out to be one of my very favorite movies. I do like pretty light-weight stuff but I also appreciate good acting, casting, and direction. The characters are absolutely charming, the music and dancing are quite thrilling. Loved the way all the scenes were shot, from a funny old cab racing around the back-streets of Rio to London at night or the gorgeous Orlinda walking upstairs in a fringed red mini-skirt. It seems to start slowly but then the plot never lets up. Everything about the movie gets more exciting and colorful and it ends leaving the viewer satisfied and ready to dance. Watch for the aerial shots of both countries and dancing holiday crowds in Rio.

Cute, romantic comedy of a screwball English banker who dreams of a samba dancer, only to rob the bank he works for and fly to Rio to meet her!

"House" fans will be shocked to hear Laurie's perfect British accent and his comedic genius.

Laurie proves he is a very versatile performer.

1 out of 5 stars This is not the original movie: million eyes of Sumuru.......2007-03-27

This movie is incredibly slow, unexciting and dull.
I have bought it because I saw a couple of scenes from "million eyes of sumuru" and stupidly thought that "thegirl from rio" was just a new title given to an old movie, million eyes, in fact.

as this is not the case and for some odd reason "million eyes of sumuru" is not available on DVD or VHS I suggest you to lobby for the issue of million eyes better than buying this stupid movie.

1 out of 5 stars The Girl from Rio.......2006-07-03

Actually, I thought I ordered Girl from Rio and instead this one was delivered. I've ordered again and I hope this time it will be alright.
About the film, no coments. Besides the rare scenes of the Rio old street carnival, it was a junk. Well, maybe I should consider some because it was produced in the 60's I guess(?), but seriously, it shouldn't even be in the list of your distinct company's list of DVDs.

3 out of 5 stars JESS FRANCO FUN.......2004-06-26

The ever dodgy JESS FRANCO directs a pretty good flick with this one. GIRL FROM RIO is absolute cheese, largely incomprehensible, but benefits from a fun score and silly 60's costumes for the female army.

This is actually sillier than any episode of WONDER WOMAN with it's island of all women. In GIRL FROM RIO there exists a city of all women called FEMINA. It is ruled by the mysterious SUMURU (Shirley Eaton). Oddly enough the name SUMURU never appears in the credits but only in the film. In the credits she is billed as SUMITRA...whatever.

The best part apart this DVD are the extras where JESS FRANCO and SHIRLEY EATON kind of trash each other. JESS FRANCO saying that SHIRLEY EATON was 'unworthy' of legend status and EATON grumbling about FRANCO shooting a lesbian scene involving her character using a body double.

GIRL FROM RIO is still frustrating FRANCO and does not compare to brilliant FRANCO films like THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z, and VAMPYRO (...).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-04-15

James Bond style 60s softcore sci fi. Excellent if you like that kind of stuff. Movie about a race of women trying to take over the world. Done with Class.

4 out of 5 stars A real curiosity !.......2004-02-02

The plot of "The girl from Rio" is quite simple: Sumuru and her army of women want to exterminate the whole human male gender. Actions scenes are not the best moments of this movie. The interest is somewhere else. It's much more its weird and wild atmosphere, which will enjoy the Franco aficionados. It's difficult not to be fascinated by the world of Femina City, the lair of the female warriors. Shirley Eaton and Maria Rohm are simply amazing in all her sexy suits and there is also a wonderful song called of course "The girl from Rio". The final scene on the ship is a typical example for Franco's touch!
The quality of this DVD is in a good shape. As Bonus we have some interviews of Jess Franco, Harry Alan Towers and the very natural Shirley Eaton. A lot of posters and stills complete this DVD with of course a Jess Franco bio and some facts of Sumuru.
"The girl from Rio" is a real curiosity and I'm sure Franco friends will enjoy it. Blue Underground did again a fine job.

INTERVIEW with DUNCAN RENALDO
1. Very informative and enlightening interview tracing Duncan Renaldo's career of how he came to play "The Cisco Kid" plus behind the scenes with Leo Carrillo and various trailers.
2. In 1980, Renaldo received a Special Lifetime Achievement Award from Nosotros, which honored him for "providing a postive Hispanic role model for Americans"...and what's more states "The Cisco Kid" a perennial television favorite.
3. This DVD is dedicated in Loving Memory of Duncan Renaldo 1904-1980

Renaldo was in his '60s and Carillo in his '70s when they appeared at the "Firemen's Rodeo" in St. Louis during the '50s ~ my Grandmother and Great Aunt took me to see them, and I believe both of them had a crush on the two actors (Renaldo and Carrillo) came galloping out into the center of the arena, every kid in attendance was in awe, as I was and when the show was over, I rode my imaginary horse home.

Own them now on DVD....if you crave action, drama and plenty of adventure then this is the place for all of the above...if you enjoyed this serial check out another VCI Entertainment release the first big screen full length in color "Lone Ranger" (1956) (digitally remastered in Dolby), long running Lone Ranger series on radio and then turned out in the early '40s in the movies...it's all new and in Warnercolor the west's greatest hero...the story line is excellent with outstanding action scenes and production with over hours worth of entertainment

Great job by VCI Entertainment for releasing the digital transfere with a clean, clear and crisp print...looking forward to more of the same from the '40s vintage...order your copy now from Amazon or VCI Entertainment, stay tuned once again with a top notch serial from VCI...so saddle up and get ready for some hard riding and adventure that only The Cisco Kid and Pancho can deliver...just the way we like 'em!

4 out of 5 stars The Robin Hood of the West,"The CISCO Kid" comes to DVD!.......2002-10-28

Of all the Western heroes in the 1940's and 1950's the "Cisco Kid" (Duncan Renaldo) and his sidekick Poncho (Leo Carrillo)were the most loved and easily recognized. They were the first internationally accepted western stars.

Now through VCI Entertainment we have 3 great samples of "The Kid". The first installment a 1945 movie, "South of the Rio Grande" (Standard Format / Black & White - digitally remastered, excellent quality) is about the daring duo go to the aide of a rancher friend to thwart a terrorizing dictator. The second movie (1950), "The Girl from San Lorenzo" (also a Standard Format/ Black & White - not digitally remastered, fair quality) - has Cisco & Poncho tracking down a criminal gang which has been robbing stagecoaches disguised as them. (Cisco & Poncho) The third film is from "The Cisco Kid" tv show of the 1950's (Standard Format / in Color - not digitally remastered (fair quality).

The extra features include; Photo & Poster Gallery, Biographies & Interview with Duncan Renaldo.

You get alot with this double feature DVD. A great introduction or re-introduction to "The Cisco Kid". Duncan Renaldo is "Cisco" and Leo Carillo was the perfect "Poncho". For many movies & for several years this duo graced the big screen and our television sets with their lovable personalities.

This is fun family stuff. A real touch of western nostalgia. Enjoy.

Languages: English (Subtitles) English (Dolby Digital 5.1) Spanish (Subtitles) Spanish (Dolby Digital 5.1) Synopsis: A mild-mannered banker finds himself living out his wildest dreams, only to wake up to a major dilemma in a continent-hopping comedy. Raymond (Hugh Laurie) is a British bank clerk who doesn't much care for his job, and whose marriage to Cathy (Lia Williams) has hit a rut. It would appear Cathy feels the same way about their relationship, since she's been fooling around on the side with Raymond's boss, Strothers (Patrick Barlow). Raymond's one escape from his dreary life comes from his part-time job as a dance instructor, and he often fantasizes about Orlinda (Vanessa Nunes), a beautiful and famous dancer from Brazil. One day, Raymond discovers that Cathy has finally left him to run away with Strothers, and Raymond snaps; he embezzles a fortune from the bank, and hops on the first plane for Rio, where with the help of taxi driver Paulo (Santiago Segura), he finds the lovely Orlinda, and to his amazement ends up spending the night with her. The next morning finds Raymond in a more stable frame of mind, and he decides he should return the money to the bank, but when he discovers Orlinda is gone, he realizes she took the embezzled funds with her, and now he has to find her and recover the money before it's too late. Santiago Segura is a major comedy star in Latin America, but he was cast somewhat against type in this film, since he's not Brazilian, but a Spaniard. Alpha Video, DVD distributors of generally unloved and long out of print American films, principally from the 1930s and 1940s, is rendering valuable service to those cineastes who value these works, since many of these productions will probably not be otherwise accessible and are thereby on their way to being collectible items. Many of these are from prints proffered by private collectors, with Alpha selecting the best available copies, as there is no attempt toward re-mastering, and no DVD extras are provided other than scene selection, and some trailers, although the company's packaging is attractive and its liner notes are, for the most part, useful. This film's principal attraction is Movita Castaneda, talented Mexican coloratura who favourably impressed United States audiences with her efforts in such as FLYING DOWN TO RIO and MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, later gaining additional renown when she, while pregnant, married (a much younger than her) Marlon Brando. She is quite effective, both musically and dramatically, in this movie, noteworthy because few retakes are to be had under the aegis of lowly-budgeted Monogram Pictures, and while there are several scenes marked by brief skips, the largest portion of the print is free of these flaws and a viewer is rewarded by a briskly paced and interesting tale. Movita is cast as Marquita Romero ("La Marquita"), an aspiring singer in Rio de Janeiro who, directly preceding a stage performance, receives a cablegram providing her with an unpleasant surprise: her brother Carlos is under arrest for murder in New York City. Marquita immediately flies there, leaving behind her swain Steve (Warren Hull), and meeting with Annette (Adele Pearce), the young woman who had sent her the message and who is the new wife of Carlos. Annette explains to Marquita that her husband is victim of a frame-up. Naturally, Steve has followed Marquita to New York where he joins the women, the trio then engaging the services of a prominent criminal attorney, and it soon develops that a night club owner is the probable murderer, not Carlos, in an insurance related case where he may have destroyed his own business through an act of arson. Marquita applies for a job to sing at the club as means of discovering the truth in this matter, and is hired by the suspect, all very melodramatic to be sure, yet the plot just about comes off thanks to some able acting by a competent cast of supporting players. The film is burdened with a somewhat cluttered narrative line but Pearce, in addition to Dennis Moore and Kay Linaker as associates of the tale's villain, bring clarity to those sequences within which they appear. Movita sings three numbers and veteran director Lambert Hillyer, thoroughly accustomed to working with thin budgets, abruptly ends the piece when time and funding run dry. It must be noted that the language of Brazil and Brazilians is Portuguese rather than Spanish as is used here but, nonetheless, there is a good deal of enjoyment to be found in this admittedly routine production.
