The moment the six-foot-tall, chain-smoking, gun-toting grandmother Madea walks on stage, it's clear that her creator, Tyler Perry, is a man who knows and appreciates his audience. Perry is the writer/director/star of the surprise hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman; like that movie, the stage play I Can Do Bad All By Myself mixes melodrama, gospel music, and freewheeling improvisational comedy--all the more loose and rambunctious because it was recorded live. In I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Madea's two granddaughters grapple with man trouble: One sister is now engaged to the other's husband, while the other resists the attentions of an ex-con with good intentions. While this angst unfolds, the heavy emotions are punctuated by rousing gospel singing and Madea's barbed, heretical wit. There's nothing sophisticated or subtle here; Perry wants to give his audience a good laugh, wring a tear from their eyes, and send them home with renewed faith in the Lord. Diary of a Mad Black Woman may have made Perry a nationally-recognized name, but watching him live on stage makes it clear he was a star long before the movie came out--the rapport he has with the crowd is palpable. --Bret Fetzer

If you need a laugh I recommend all of Tyler Perry's DVDs. He is a very talented individual and all his dvds are very funny as they all give a message with much truth behind his characters.

My title pretty much sums up my review. This is by far the funniest movie I've seen in YEARS (and years!) For being a stage play, it really works. The musicals get somewhat overboard but the comedy more than compensates! Reminds me of the good old Carole Burnette Show, especially the spontaneity of the cast. This film made me laugh so hard IT HURT!!! A very good message to today's youth also. My twenty - year-old daughter wanted me to buy her a copy (it's that good!) If you like to laugh, you can't go wrong with this.

This is not the sort of fare I would ever have chosen for myself; I saw it only because someone who apparently thought it appropriate to force his taste on others played it on the long-distance bus trip I took. Though the loudness, banality, and sheer tackiness of the material spoiled the time on the bus, being a captive audience to this junk did afford me an opportunity I otherwise wouldn't have had to see what so many people continue to find "entertaining." Black people (at least Madea's fans) still will laugh heartily at violence; black people (at least Madea's fans) still take particular pleasure in the violent punishment of children and teenagers. Black people (at least Madea's fans) still can be relied upon to melt into orgiastic delirium at the mere invocation of "Jee-zus"--intelligent plotting and deft writing are not necessary. And if one has no talent for composing, don't worry: just raise the decibel level, and loudness will take the place of beauty. The "Madea" character is played by a black man in drag; did we really need yet another of these? Did we need yet another black virago bellowing put-downs and threats of violence? And is the poisoning to death of a neighbor's dog amusing, so much so that it gets ten minutes (it seemed at least that long) of exposition as a "joke"? The plot device of a young girl prostituted by her parent showed up not only in this video but in the return trip's sleep-spoiler, "Madea Goes to Jail," as well--is this really a common fate of young black women? I was not just offended; I was angry. I am no book-(or video-)burner; a piece's stereotypes and uglinesses can be forgiven, if it at least succeeds as comedy or drama. The videos that depict "Madea" do not. The character is not funny; it's not original; it's derivative, pedestrian, and just plain bad, and it needs to be consigned to history's dustbin, not celebrated.

I love tyler perry plays and movies. He writes comical dramas. His plays are humorous, but there is always a lesson to be learned in them. His characters are well developed, and you feel like you know them as neighbors.

I really enjoy this movie. When it arrive I watch 3 day straight. The stars Tyler Perry as Madea a grandma who is the glue to the family. The two sisters Vianne and Mayline aren't getting along because Mayline is marrying Vianne's ex-husand Anthony. Vianne is stil hurt about the divorce and feelslike she will spend the rest of her life alone. Vianne realizes that God is in control. God will give her direction. Mayline realize that marrying her sister is wrong and doesn't go thtough with it. This play reminds of my great gramda who past away 9 years ago . She was the glue to maternal side of the family everytime I play it makes me think of her.

This show was recorded live in Washington, D.C. in September 2002. This is the show where Madea got her start. The theme of the show is "We fight so hard to hold on to things that God is trying to tear apart". Vianne, an abused woman, has a husband who has filed for divorce while she is visiting her grandmother, Madea. When Madea takes sick, her other granddaughter comes to visit her also and announces that she is engaged to be married...to her sisters soon-to-be ex-husband! Madea is simply not going to take this! You have got to see what happens next. This play is filled with laughter and rich gospel singing.

Tyler Perry is the boom. His plays/movies are a full meal deal. He not only make you laugh, he keep it real, and give life lessons to boot. If I need a laugh or a lesson it's in one of his plays or movies, I just pop one in (I have all of them). Tyler continue to keep it real and you will be blessed tremendously.

This play is wonderful. It is hilarious but it also tackles some serious issues. I like the fact that it has a religous message but not in a holy santified way. Madea is hilarious and off the hook.
