Wonderful Set.......2007-03-21
Despite the packaging - (disks pilled on top of each other so to get at the bottom disk you have to first remove the ones on top.) Very inconvientient to manage. Because of the packiaging I had to rate the set as a 4, but if I was just rating the transfers themselves I would have given it a 5. This is the best transfer of the movies included that I have ever seen. My Favorite Brunette and Road to Bali were especially good - video sharp and clear - sound acceptible for movies of this age. The color on Bali was especially good - others I've seen had very poor, washed out colors. I have been completely happy with this set and would not hesitate to recommend it.
Bob Hope Movie Collection.......2007-01-18
I enjoyed the movies but the case it came in was really terrible so many disc's in a very badly designed holder. I am afraid they will become scratched!
Great Set---Bad Packaging.......2007-01-17
If you're a fan of Bob Hope-then this is a great buy. Some Classics here including The Lemon Drop Kid, Seven Little Foys, 2 Road Movies ( Rio & Bali ) plus some of Hope's later-and lesser efforts, i.e. How to Commit Marriage etc.
Though not a fan of these later movies they're still interesting to watch, but it's the earlier stuff that makes this set well worth owning-and the price cannot be beaten.
The only drawback is that because of the budget price-tag the set is presented with five double-sided discs virtually stacked on top of each other making them easily damaged if not careful.
However, having said that, I'm very happy with this package at such a bargain price. Highly recommended.

Bob Hope returned to the wild West in Son of Paleface, mining the rootin' shootin' genre for gag after gag. Hope plays Junior Potter--another variation on his lascivious, cowardly, yet somehow endearing persona--a college boy who's come to California seeking his father's hidden gold. What he finds is an empty treasure chest, a pile of unpaid bills, vengeful Indians, buxom Jane Russell (as a saloon girl by day, wily bandit by night), and singing cowboy Roy Rogers. It's prime silliness, an ancestor to movies like Airplane! that never let a moment go by without an absurd joke. Russell sashays about in spectacular form-fitting outfits, Rogers yodels a few tunes, and Hope snivels and wheedles his way out of endless scrapes. Good-natured slapstick (though its depiction of Native Americans will raise the hackles on politically correct viewers). --Bret Fetzer

Son of Palface 1952.......2006-04-19
Four years after his hit comedy "The Palface 1948" , Bob Hope (1903-2003) returned to the screen as Junior Potter , Son of Painless Peter Potter , the hapless hero of the first film (The Palface 1948) . The Harvard-bred Junior heads out West to claim his fathers inheritance .Returning for the sequel , but in a different role , is Jane Russell (1921 - ) as a outlaw named "Mike" who continually has to save this our hapless hero . Also starring in the sequel is the king of the Cowboys himself, Roy Rogers (1911-1998) and his horse trigger (1932-1965) who portray themselves . Hope teams with the pair to get to the bottom of a gold shipment robbery . Also for the sequel is the oscar-winning song "Buttons and Bows" .Cowriter and director Frank Tashlin (1913-1972) , a former cartoonist and screenwriter of the first (The Palface 1948) . Very Funny Western Farce With Bob Hope And Trigger The Wonder Horse In Top Form .......2006-04-06
After the huge success of 1948's "The Paleface", which starred Bob Hope and the very beautiful Jane Russell in a hilarious farce set in the old west a sequel was a logical idea and this time around the jokes and genral scenerio were even better. Relying on the usual Hope format of jokes about current events (for 1952), a good natured jibe at pal Bing Crosby, and with him often stepping out of character during the story, to deliver some of his memorable quips, "Son of Paleface", is one sequel that really does work better than its parent. Apart from the beautiful Jane Russell returning in this sequel playing a different character from the first film, Bob Hope is teamed here also with western star Roy Rogers and his wonder horse Trigger. This makes for some great comedy and the laughs come thick and fast as Bob Hope good naturedly sends up Roy Roger's squeaky clean image and also has some memorable run ins with Trigger that have to be seen to be believed. I generally love the Bob Hope humour of his best films and while this effort comes much later in his illustrious career than such classics as "The Ghost Breakers", and "My Favourite Blonde", it is a memorable effort nevertheless that deserves the classic status that audiences have bestowed on it.
You certainly never go into a Bob Hope comedy like "Son of Paleface", expecting realism and nor should you. What we do get here however is a laugh filled few hours of great comedy, tremendous gags, and often quite a bit of adlibbing. By the early 1950's Bob Hope had his cowardly, wise cracking persona down pat and his Juniour Potter character here is one of his best ever ready with a fast one liner or wry observation about his own cowardly manner. Silly and not to be taken seriously for one minute "Son of Paleface", may be but it is just the movie experience guaranteed to drive away any blues you may be feeling. It's been a very long time since a movie experience has been capable of really doing that and great credit must go to Hope, Jane Russell, Roy Rogers and Trigger for this great piece of old fashioned comedy entertainment that is always worth another viewing of. Enjoy!
Great movie!!!!!!!.......2005-09-07
For me I love Bob Hope so I loved this movie!I also really admire Jane Russell with her eyes that really speak for themselves! I recommend this movie to anyone and I cannot forget Roy Rogers and his sidekick Trigger the horse! Trigger really makes this movie, what a talented animal!!!!!
The story is cute and kind of corny but it's Bob Hope and he can get away with about anything!Oh and of course Bing also has a cameo!!!!!
So to all who read this, the movie is well worth seeing!

Bob Hope brings his own brand of laughing gas to the Wild West as a would-be "painless" dentist lassoed into marrying Jane Russell. She's a shapely outlaw turned undercover agent on the trail of some varmints selling guns to a hostile Indian tribe, and he's her unwitting cover. Hope cowers and cracks self-effacing jokes while bodies fall around him ("Brave men run in my family," he quips, then runs), but he's even funnier swaggering and sneering like a kid playing cowboy in a flamboyant costume apparently stolen from the Oklahoma! road show. The Paleface is one of his best films, and the unflappable Russell is a great match. Theme song "Buttons and Bows" (which Hope delivers with a clowning mock twang) won an Oscar
®, and the 1948 film spawned a sequel (Son of Paleface, costarring Roy Rogers and Trigger) and a remake (The Shakiest Gun in the West with Don Knotts). --Sean Axmaker

The Paleface 1948.......2006-04-19
The wild west has never been wilder or funnier , than in this classic six-shoting farce which introduced the Academy award winning song "Buttons and Bows" . Bob Hope (1903-2003) in one of his most populare roles , hi plays "Painless" Peter Potter , a timmid corrspondence school dentist earning a shaky living in the lawless West . When "Painless" seduced into agreeing t a quickie marriege by the voluptous Jane Russell (1921- ) , hi thinks his luck changed . Little does hi suspect that Russell is actually sharpshooter Calamity Jane (1848-1903) , hot on trail of dangerous renegade gang and that she simply using "Painless" as her cover and unwitting dupe . This old west burlesque , brightened by Tehnicolor and Uproarious slapstick went to become one of Bob Hopes best loved . Vehicles and his biggest box office hit .Saddle up for athe wild comic ride . Marvelous movie with many laughts . Super transfer in High Quality pictures . Recommended .

Full Of Fun.......2006-03-16
Its one of bob hopes best. The entire family can sit and have a good time watching this movie.
I highly recommend this movie for a day of fun & laughs
i thought it was something else..........2003-06-16
don't be tempted. hope was funny on his shows in a different format, where spontaneity was his forte. executing someone else's scripted directions and dialogue, he's average...wouldn't even make second string on the stooges.
pure junk.
Hope Hit.......2003-04-06
My favorite Bob Hope moment of all time comes from this film. Not his amazing facility with a gag or a prop but when he sings "Buttons and Bows" in an attempt to seduce Jane Russell. It's a great song and wonderfully done. Hope never got to work with the great directors for some reason so his work is often overlooked today, but shouldn't be. Otherwise he'd be recognized as the most influential American comic actor of the sound era.

Customer Reviews:
Delightful comedies, great for family viewing. Bob Hope, Lucille Ball and Jane Russell at their comedic bests.......2007-02-18
These two feature films are perfect for the whole family. They are terrific comedies that are well-written and well-acted. They make good entertainment.
I am amazed at the strong, dominating woman who could out-shoot, out-think and out-maneuver all the men around her, portrayed in a widely released film during the 1940s in Jane Russell's character in "The Paleface". Understandably, the film was a smashing success when it was first released.
The film "The Paleface" introduced the famous popular standard tune "Buttons & Bows", which Bob Hope sang to Jane Russell, trying to woo her.
Given the prominence of the actors and their outstanding performances, I recommend this double feature for your permanent film collection.
bought it for one and liked it best for the other.......2007-01-10
I primarilly bought this for the paleface as I loved son of paleface. But there is one instance where the sequel is better than the origional. However Sorrowful is a splendid picture and is worth the price alone.
Bob & Lucy plus Bob & Jane.......2006-02-22
The Bob Hope Tribute Collection has many of his early films. This disc contains two films, Sorrowful Jones with his first partnering with Lucille Ball and The Paleface with his first partnering with Jane Russell.
Most people will recognize Sorrowful Jones by the more common name of Little Miss Marker. This is one of the most adapted of Damon Runyon's stories. This is one of the more faithful adaptations.
Sorrowful (Bob Hope) is a bookie on Broadway. Gladys O'Neill (Lucille Ball) is an old flame who is seeing gangster Big Steve. Big Steve just burned all the bookies with a horse race. But the next race, Dreamy Joe is going to lose. So Sorrowful is taking all book on the race. Sorrowful takes a marker from a gambler who leaves his daughter, Mary Jane, as the marker.
When the father overhears something he shouldn't, he "disappears". Sorrowful is stuck with Mary Jane. They learn that the father was found in the river and that she is now an orphan.
The racing commission is investigating the race and Big Steve needs a patsy to run his last Dreamy Joe scam. Sorrowful suggests transferring ownership of Dreamy Joe to the Mary Jane. This starts everything into action.
Gladys and Sorrowful start to get attached to Mary Jane. But when the police start to piece together what is happening, Big Steve starts to tie up the loose ends. This lands Mary Jane in the hospital with a concussion asking for Dreamy Joe. Sorrowful arranges to steal Dreamy Joe and take him to Mary Jane. Of course, a horse in a hospital is perfect comic fare for Hope.
As for most Damon Runyon stories, this ends happily in marriage.
The second feature is The Paleface. Jane Russell plays a beautiful Calamity Jane. Jane is facing 10 years in prison or she must help the Feds in stopping guns from getting to the Indians. She is to meet up with a lawyer who will pose as her husband. When she arrives, she finds the lawyer dead and men waiting for her. She escapes into a ladies bath which the first floor is occupied by Painless Pete Potter (Bob Hope), a novice dentist (read bad).
In a moment of desperation she hooks up with Painless and marries him. But she is really setting him up to be a target of the smugglers. The smugglers know about the Federal agent but don't know who it is. Painless leads the wagon train astray and the train winds up at an abandoned weigh station. The station is attacked by Indians and Jane kills eleven of them but everyone assumes that Painless did it. He becomes a hero.
They arrive in the town where the sale is going to be made. The bad guys try to set Painless up but Jane comes to his rescue. Jane and Painless get captured and escape. The ending is totally ridiculous but is still fun. Remember this is a Bob Hope film and reality does not apply!!
By this time Bob Hope had created a hapless personality via his Road films with Bing. This is an extension of that persona. This film won the Oscar for Best Song for Bob Hope's rendition of Buttons and Bows.
You are either a Bob Hope fan or not. If you are these are two of his best and best leading ladies.
DVD EXTRAS: None
Another double dose of Hope!.......2003-07-02
Here's another disc in the very nicely done Bob Hope Tribute Collection. Again we have trailers and production notes, plus cast and crew bios. Two features for the price of one is always a good deal, and this installment in the set does not disappoint, with two classic Hope pictures, "Sorrowful Jones" and "The Paleface".
Of the two (believe it or not), "Sorrowful Jones" is the real keeper. "The Paleface" is certainly more famous, and pretty funny in its own right as Bob plays a cowardly correspondance school dentist making his way across the Old West. However, the other feature hits the mark every time, while "The Paleface" tends be a bit uneven.
On the other hand, "The Paleface" is pure farce, and introduces the song "Buttons and Bows" (sung here by Bob), that became a smash hit for Dinah Shore. Film fans should be on the lookout for an appearance by Iron Eyes Coty, forever famous as the Native American who sheds a tear in that classic environmental awareness ad from the 1970's. Jane "Cross Your Heart Bra" Russell plays Calamity Jane, who marries Bob so she can get a lead on some gun runners. The film spawned a sequel four years later ("Son of Paleface"), and was later remade with Don Knotts as "The Shakiest Gun in the West".
"The Paleface" is also available as a stand-alone disc in the set, albeit with more bonus features. Frankly, I don't understand why Universal put the film on two discs when one would do, but there it is, anyway.
"Sorrowful Jones" is the second film version of "Little Miss Marker", a Damon Runyon story. The original film made Shirley Temple a star. Taking over the role in this one is Mary Jane Saunders (playing Martha Jane Smith), who all but steals the film from Bob Hope! Lucille Ball is along for the ride, playing a nightclub singer who helps Bob in caring for the kid. Meanwhile, the bad guy (Bruce Cabot), is trying to fix a big horse race, and kills off the kid's father in order to keep the secret.
"Sorrowful Jones" is the better picture here probably because it's a bit more serious and/or sentimental. An incredible scene has Bob instructing Martha Jane on how to pray, and I can't remember seeing a scene that more clearly defines the cultural differences in films of yesterday from those of today. Talk about old fashioned values! Bob lays it all out for the kid in a simple and affecting way that's sure to stay with you.
Like the other discs in the set, this one is a good bargain, and a disc you'll be glad to own.

High Quality transfer ! Recommended

Okay if the price is right.......2004-05-30
This dvd is okay if you can get it for under $5 like I did. If I'd have paid any more for it I would have felt cheated. Turn the sound down, though- the music they stuck on these has NOTHING to do with the movies.
For the most part the picture quality is quite good, although I noticed in The Blacksmith some seriously deteriorated frames.
Loved the Movie - So sad they've changed the music.......2004-02-18
We rented "The General" and LOVED IT! I bought this version and when I watched it I discovered they've changed the musical score. Can you imagine changing the musical score on a silent movie?!!! The music was changed to a classical instrumental score. My 10 year old son, for whom this movie was purchased, was very upset and we haven't watched the nasty thing since. Hello, in a silent movie the music is one of the characters and is just as important as anything you see on the screen!
It was disappointing!
A General disappointment.......2004-01-07
We have seen this movie as released by other distributors and found it to be one of the greatest comedies we'd ever seen. This version is completely ruined by its soundtrack. Whoever produced this version simply put generic classical music in the background (part of which even includes "pomp and circumstance." May be appropriate for my high school graduation, But not for one of the film greats.) I want my money back. And I want to find the version with the "original" single-piano musical score.
Buster Keaton Triple Feature.......2003-12-10
This is very cheap and when you see it you'll know why.
The picture quality is o.k. but the main film Keaton's classic The General has been transfered at the wrong speed.
Everything seems to be happening in slow motion.
The other two films (The Blacksmith and The Paleface)seem to be at the right speed but The General is the main feature on this disc so I would advise looking for another copy of this classic film.
