Description

19-year old Jared Price leaves the stability of his home in Georgia to start a new life in Southern California. With only a bag on his back and a few hundred dollars in his pockets, he sets out on an emotional journey of self-realization and sexual discovery. With little privacy and a prostitute for a roommate, Jared stumbles through the tight quarters of a Hollywood youth hostel. He befriends his young neighbor, Robert, whom Jared quickly discovers is eager to pursue more than merely a platonic friendship. Jared gains employment as a personal caretaker for Mrs. Haines, a wealthy, older blind woman. He suddenly falls into a deceptive relationship with her affluent older son, Matthew. When the relationship becomes personally destructive, Jared is faced once again with the difficult decision to abandon his stability and risk his heart.

When I first got involved with 10%, I bought alot of their movies, for the longest time, this was one of my favorites by them. Now having it on DVD, it's becoming one of those again. The only charecter I don't like is Matthew, kinda bad choice in name after Matthew Shepard was killed, but this is just a charecter. I adored Jared, his relationship with Robert, Mrs. Haines, Matthew's boyfriend Andrew. The ending was very inspiring-Mrs. Haines speech to Jared, then the kiss between Jared and Robert-that was cute. Some say this film is loaded with cliches, but my attitude to that is-if it has a good story and believable charecters, why should that matter?)Corey Spears does a very nice job with his role as Jared, and he's cute! Corey makes the comment in the feature, that he did a very uncomfortable scene with Matthew/Steve Tyler, followed by the love scene,he goes from hating him, to having partial sex with him. Other than Matthew, I adore this film, for obvious reasons.

This is not a bad little film. Sure its low-budget and looks it. The story is somewhat unrealistic although there are characters like the antagonist (Matthew)out there in the real world who are shallow and unable to love. Jared, played by Corey Spears, is an endearing character. Spears' acting leaves a lot to be desired at certain points. He's good in some scenes (the scenes with Rocky Price, the blind woman) and weak in others (the car scene where Matthew's boyfriend is taking him home). Much better is Josh Jacobsen who plays Robert, the hostel resident who wins Jared's heart. The guy who plays Matthew is not competent at all but the guy who plays his boyfriend does well by his part. I didn't want this film to end when it did. I wanted to see more of Jared and Robert's relationship. Compared to some of the travesties out there in [...] cinema, this one is not bad...not bad at all.

This has nothing to do with the book or movie...i just found it rather odd that the main character has my exact name. Im the real Jared Price...well not exactly the same because im straight with a loving girlfriend...but i found it odd that i googled my name and i find a book and a movie about a character with my full name.

i really enjoyed this movie. it had its faults but were overlooked by me. i can really relate to this one. pretty much the same thing happened to me but many years ago. the interviews at the end were well worth watching. i do not under stand why there are not more like this. this movie required no thinking. it was just ENJOYABLE. maybe because it hit so close to home. i loved the characters and most of the acting. i thought the elderly lady was just a bit too much. the rest of the characters were fine. like so many of the gay movies nowadays, the so called straight players could hardly wait to tell all of us wierdos that this was their first time. supposedly they are experienced actors. why must they make such a big deal when they play gay. maybe for aunt mabel or mom and dad. this is the main reason i firmly believe that in a gay movie, the actors should be gay in their real life. just by watching all of them, it is easy to pick out the straight men and his one is no exception. i really like this one though. i rec'd it yesterday and have already seen it 4 times. as i said in the title: THIS IS MY KIND OF MOVIE and i recommend it to anyone that just wants to sit and enjoy without being too critical.

Tender, sensitive, mature gay drama for the discriminating viewer........2005-10-10

A mature and intelligent gay drama about a young fledgling who's just forging his way in the wild world. Yes, this is a low-budget film, and yes, the production values can be criticized--by the shallow. The conversation is not witty and there are no spicy dramatic scenes where dishes are being thrown or people are O.D.-ing off drugs. Instead this movie is mild and entertaining ...and true!

Of all the gay dramas available today--and I have seen a considerable number--this rates in the top ten. This movie burns up "Queer as Folk" and stomps on the "L word". Sorry, but it's true, the writers for those shows need to sit down with pen and notepad and take notes from this little gem.

A realistic, charming, and even exciting story about a Georgia boy who journeys to Hollywood and meets other gay people for the first time.

The boy is just unbelievably cute -- more than the over-hyped, over-polished Hollywood celebrity crowd. He's the rare shy, sensitive, soft type; kind and loving, ethical and polite, a nice and wholesome Southern country boy, such as we never see in movies. Can you watch him for five minutes without feeling an impulse to give him a hug?

A big break from the rude urban twinks we usually see in gay films. Just for the record? Nothing's wrong in having a shy character in a movie. Not everybody has to be an obnoxious, raging extrovert. And this quiet, charming boy speaks volumes even when not speaking; just dig his good looks.

Now for the negatives. Film critics will deduct points because they will say the production values were sloppy. Oh, you can hear traffic noise when the boy's talking to the old blind lady. Tsk, tsk. Well, I really didn't give a flip about the low-budget touch, because, why? Because the writing was first-rate, and the acting was first-rate, and guess what: nothing else really matters, period. My rating? Five stars.

Oh yeah, the story does indeed descend into didacticism, teaching a life-lesson about love to the young gay audience, but not in a heavy-handed or syrupy way, but in a way that fits just like a piece to a puzzle. People of all ages would benefit hearing what this movie has to say about choosing a life partner and in making decisions about who to be with.

The love-making scenes are just about as sensitive as we find in straight movies, which even today is rather revolutionary for a gay film. I also like that there are no villains or monsters, but the characters are instead human beings with good points, bad points, and in-between areas.

Recommended. This is a movie you may indeed watch again a few years down the line.
