Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke

Once upon a DREAM . . . Good & Dark Fairies, Kings & Princes, Fire Breathing Dragon & a Golden Beauty.......2007-06-16
Once upon a Dream, many moons ago, when I was a child; I viewed this Dark Disney Fairy Tale and became instantly mesmirized by all fairy folk and tales to be told. Dear Walt gave us little gals the imagined lore of pretty Princess's or Princess's to be. As well as the Tom boy in me, the warrior Princes with sword and shield fighting for the greatest cause . . . defending ones kingdom from evil overbearing forces.
My undying luv for the winged serpents of old - Dragons, is all given credit due to my favorite Walt Disney villian . . .
Malevolent Maleficent, considered a Dark Fairy (more suitable in Disney standards of the time than a witch) who transformed her being into the statuesque purple fire breathing dragon in the ending battle together with Prince Phillip and the delightful fairies; Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather to save the realm from darkness.
MALEVOLENT MALEFICENT, THE DARKEST FAIRY - notable quotes:
"The Forest of Thorns shall be his tomb!
Move through the skies on a fog of doom!
Now go with the curse, and serve me well!
Round Stefan's Castle, CAST MY SPELL!"
"She is indeed, most wondrous fair.
Gold of sunshine in her hair,
lips that shame the red red rose.
In ageless sleep, she finds repose.
The years roll by, but a a hundred years to a steadfast heart, are but a day.
And now, the gates of a dungeon part, and our prince is free to go his way.
Off he rides, on his noble steed, a valiant figure, straight and tall!
To wake his love with "loves' first kiss"! And prove that "true love" conquers all! AHAHAHAHAHA!"
SLEEPYING BEAUTY is most intoxicating, hilariously funny, beautiful artistry, classical music and captivating characters immortalized. Both an enchantment and fulfilling destiny, from a prickling finger to a long awaited magical kiss.
Other Disney's to see in the realm of Princess Fairy tales:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney Special Platinum Edition)
Cinderella (Two-Disc Special Edition) (Platinum Edition)
Walt Disney has been adored and admired by many generations since his beginning in the movie animation industry. Sir Walt has become a part of movie making history and his Disney kingdom will continue to grow, and for future generations, his legend will live on evermore.
LadyGray quote:
"The last in Sir Walts time, a Fairy Tale to be told;
The setting of the stage is a unique Dark Disney mold.
This adventurous stunning musical for all to see and believe;
A long quest to save a kingdom and release Sleeping Beauty free."

One of the best.......2007-05-31
I purchased this DVD at a used bookstore for $14.95 and I was expecting it to be damaged in some way, but it wasn't!
Anyway, this is the classic Disney movie about a jealous witch, a beautiful princess, three bumbling fairies, a handsome prince, and the spell.
I highly recommend that everyone watch this movie with their children.
A+++

It took really long for delivery, however, it's a great classic and worth it! I'm glad that even though it was sent back into the Disney Vault, I was still able to get it on Amazon!

Hilarious, cheapie black comedy from 1960 that may be the best film by B-picture master Roger Corman, other than Bucket of Blood, made about the same time with the same writer, Charles Griffith. Seymour (Jonathan Haze) is an assistant in a skid-row flower shop who's on the point of losing his job when the unusual plant he's developed turns the store into a major attraction. The only problem is that the plant needs human blood to live, all the while crying, "Feed me! FEED ME!" Luckily, Seymour causes a series of inadvertent deaths that more than make up for the food shortage. Jack Nicholson provides a comic sidebar as a nutjob masochist visiting a dentist's office. Giggling and wild-eyed from the same impulse that might lead others to read scandal sheets, he can be seen in the dentist's waiting room reading aloud from Pain magazine. Famous for having the shortest shooting schedule on record (two days and a night), The Little Shop of Horrors spawned an off-Broadway musical that was in turn made into a successful film in 1986, starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. It was in just this quick-shoot atmosphere that Corman nurtured the careers of many of America's most celebrated film directors; this little shop of honors included Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, and Jonathan Demme. The DVD has optional Japanese subtitles, very generous bios of the stars and filmmakers, and a clean, crisp transfer. --Jim Gay

If You Love Musicals..........2007-08-26
Then this movie is definitely for you. It's been one of my all time favorites since I was a child. I've seen it countless times over the last 15 years and each time is just as funny and entertaining as the first time.
The fun of rock 'n roll horror.......2007-08-23
While lots of people have enjoyed the film-and-live experience of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," my candidate for a good time would be "Little Shop of Horrors." This remake of a classic bad-horror film shows that the core idea was perfect for a rock 'n roll musical. Everyone is sublimely cast, right down to the doo-wop girl singers who form the Greek chorus.
Rick Moranis may start out a downtrodden, mistreated nebbish, but a passionate heart beats under that nerdy exterior. If his "Suddenly, Seymour" duet with the incredible Ellen Greene doesn't make your romantic heart go pitter-patter, head for the cemetery, honey, because you're officially dead.
Part of me regrets that the film had a sort-of happy ending, but there's enough of an "uh-oh" tag at the end to give it an edge. Anyway, who cares about such quibbles? Just sing along with Steve Martin's sadistic dentist, and have yourself a real fun evil time.
very good.......2007-06-28
i love this movie it is fun and funny it has comedy and action and murder a evil plant what more could you ask for
Like the movie...not the singing.......2007-05-18
This is a pretty good movie, except for all the singing....I know it's that type of movie, but I don't care for it. But I love the plot!
The second best musical of all times.......2007-05-15
I first saw this when I was about 12. I hated it at first because I wasn't mature enough to watch it with out having nightmares. Luckely after occasionaly watching it over a period of about two years I final was able to to watch the whole movie from beginiing to end without stopping except for bathroom breaks. If you saw the original black and white version of this made in the sixties and the off brodway play which ran four about four years in New York. I also thought I would inform you that the whole alternate first ending is not include on this dvd. The al;ternate nding was only avilable for about the first three days the dvd was avilable for sale on line and in stores when it first came out. Unfortunately Mr. Griffen had not given approval to have the alternate ending included on the dvd so only fragments of it remain on the second release of it. When young rick morransis discovers a mystery planet trouble some comes up. Can rick tame this blood thirst monster will he is forced to murder to feed it;s growing hunger. I also thought I'd inform you that two of the members of this cast are currently decased. John Candy died from a heart prtoblem I belive it was shorly after his role as Barf in spaceballs the famous spoof of the starwars triology that came out after this. In addition shortly before the dvd release vincent Garden also passed away. Can seymor control this monster of nature and what fate lies in store for the human race. Find out in thrilling action packed hillarious finally. This movie should be fine for kids 13 and up due to mild gory images mild rude humor mild violence in a couple of parts, intensity and occasional inapropriate language at the begining, middle and the end of the movie.

A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. --Tom Keogh

Brought back childhood memories!.......2007-09-12
I grew up watching this movie with childhood friends from church. When I got the dvd in the mail, I emailed all my friends and told them that we need to get together for a Robin Hood reunion. (Note that this review was written in 2007 and all of my friends and I are now age 24-30.) Anyway, it was surprising how all of us sang along to songs we hadn't heard on over 15-20 years. Great movie! It brought back a lot of good childhood memories.
One of the Best Disney Creations.......2007-07-09
Robin hood is Disney at its best in the classic animation style. The voices for the characters are perfect. Great story line, and wonderfully done.

Love this movie since my son was little. Now his son is loving it too!

This is our favorite Disney movie. We both grew up watching the Video, so it's fun to see our boys watching the DVD and hearing the fun songs again.

Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon

When times were fun........2007-08-18
I was 8 years old when rock n roll first came on the scene and when young people ask me what it was like when I was a teenager, I tell them to watch the movie American Graffiti. It nails it right on the head. The street rods, cruisers, custom cars, the music, all bring back good memories. Sock hops, car races, going steady, all part of an era in time that will never be duplicated again. All of these things were captured in a fun but very capable and accurate way by the director, producers and and actors. Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, Ron Howard and the rest were great. What a cast of characters and what a time in history. I loved it and have watched this movie more times than I can count. I highly recommend it to anyone that grew up in that era and to the young who want to see how the "older" generation had fun and enjoyed life. It didn't take much to entertain me or my friends when i was a teen. Give me a car, a girl friend, friends and a few hundred cruises around the circuit on a Friday and Saturday night and there you have it. American Graffiti.
One of the BEST movies of ALL TIMES.......2007-08-08
One, great cast. Two, great music. Three, great story. A must for any movie buff. This is one I watch from time to time and enjoy it every time I watch it
Longing for the good 'ol days.......2007-08-07
I grew up in Northern California and graduated from Fremont High School in the not so small town of Oakland in 1965 (and later from California Polytechnic University in San luis Obispo in 1975, after a short stint in the service). I remember the Mel's drive-in in downtown Oakland, and I remember the 'cruising' on San Leandro Blvd on Friday and Saturday nights (although I couldn't afford to get a car until 1968--a 1961 Volvo PV 544 sedan--(Wow, I wish I had that car back!). I have to say that this movie is truly one of the best nostalgia stirring movies I have ever seen. It tugs at your heart and reminds us babyboomers that there really was a simpler, more carefree time and we lived it! When gas was 23 cents a gallon (or less when the gas wars were on), you loved Casper's Hotdogs, and education costs were almost nothing if you attended Merritt Junior College. When you rode on the back of your friend's Vespa motorbike to San Jose, just because you had never been there, and when you took off in your car on a whim to visit Big Basin to see the redwoods. Talk about a movie that causes you to reminisce!
Happy Highways.......2007-07-09
Into my heart on air that kills
From you far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.
This verse, from A.E. Housman's "A Shropshire Lad", summarizes everything that I feel for American Graffiti. The movie opened when I was 13 years old. It was my first "R" rated movie and the sold out theater erupted with laughter over and over. Now I'm 47 and I find it almost too sad to watch. Where did my childhood friends go? What lives have they led? The sweet promise of youth: a happy highway where I went and cannot come again.
American Graffiti .......2007-06-27
I didn't care for this movie too much. It might be ok for teenagers but I doubt today's teenager would relate, it may seem kind of nerdy to them.

After building up the duo's popularity through recordings and several performances on Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd--as "legendary" Chicago blues brothers Jake and Elwood Blues--took their act to the big screen in this action-packed hit from 1980. As Jake and Elwood struggle to reunite their old band and save the Chicago orphanage where they were raised, they wreak enough good-natured havoc to attract the entire Cook County police force. The result is a big-budget stunt-fest on a scale rarely attempted before or since, including extended car chases that result in the wanton destruction of shopping malls and more police cars than you can count. Along the way there's plenty of music to punctuate the action, including performances by Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, and James Brown that are guaranteed to knock you out. As played with deadpan wit by Belushi and Aykroyd, the Blues Brothers are "on a mission from God," and that gives them a kind of reckless glee that keeps the movie from losing its comedic appeal. Otherwise this might have been just a bloated marathon of mayhem that quickly wears out its welcome (which is how some critics described this film and its 1998 sequel). Keep an eye out for Steven Spielberg as the city clerk who stamps some crucial paperwork near the end of the film.--Jeff Shannon

Great Movie!.......2007-07-19
I remember watching this movie when I was a kid, hadn't seen it in many years but it was even better than I remembered it. If you like blues, this movie is a must have!!!!
Homage to a Classic.......2007-07-03
This 25th Anniversary Edition is a great way to say "Happy Birthday" to one of the all-time great movies. Well worth the wait!
Another Classic ! .......2007-06-03
Simply this is a great film, great cast, great story line, great music and it stars John Belushi & Dan Aykroyd what more could you want from a film ?.
They Broke My Watch.......2007-05-12
Have you ever had one of those days where you feel tired and alittle bored and depressed? You need a pick-me-up. If that is you, then don't waste anytime. Pop this in your DVD player and start feeling happy. This movie is the purfect cure for a bad day. It makes you laugh hysterical. It is just plain fun. The comedy, the music, the romance, the ridiculous car chases. It's got everything for everybody. And it's done perfectly. Dan and John have fantastic chemistry together and there both remarkably funny. the whole cast is grade-A. How can you go wrong with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Candy, Cab Calloway, and director John Landis? You can't. The music is so good, you can't help but dance alittle bit. It's way better then what they call music today. And how can I forget: the car chases. The car chases in this film are the best I have ever seen. THIS IS NOT EVEN A ACTION MOVIE! That shows you how great this movie is. It is wall to wall fun. It's gotta be the greatest musical ever. It's definetly in my top 5 for my favorite movies ever. Everytime I watch it, it makes me smile. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Mel Brooks's 1987 parody of the Star Wars trilogy is a jumble of jokes rather than a comic feature, and, predictably, some of those jokes work better than others. The cast, including Brooks in two roles, more or less mimics the principal characters from George Lucas's famous story line, and the director certainly gets a boost from new allies (SCTV graduates Rick Moranis and John Candy) as well as old ones (Dick Van Patten, Dom DeLuise). Watch this and wait for the sporadic inspiration--but don't be surprised if you find yourself yearning for those years when Brooks was a more complete filmmaker (Young Frankenstein). --Tom Keogh
Description
The farce is with you in this "uproarious salute to science fiction" (The Hollywood Reporter) that teams comedy legend Mel Brooks with an all-star cast of cutups including John Candy (Splash), Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters) and Bill Pullman (Ruthless People)! When the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) attempts to steal all the air from planet Druidia, a determined Druish Princess (Daphne Zuniga), a clueless rogue (Pullman) and a half-man/half-dog creature who's his own best friend (Candy) set out to stop him! But with the forces of darkness closing in on them at ludicrous speed, they'll need the help of a wise imp named Yogurt (Brooks) and the mystical power of "The Schwartz" to bring peaceand merchandising rightsto the entire galaxy!
Customer Reviews:
Not on a par with other Mel Brooks movies.......2007-08-27
I have seen this movie a number of times, and while it has some funny scenes, it is not at the genius level of other Mel Brooks movies (The Producers and Blazing Saddles come to mind). The acting seems ordinary, without great delivery or presence. Mel Brooks has 2 major roles, giving a much-needed boost to the movie.
Tired, obvious jokes and fourth-wall humor.......2007-08-09
A friend of mine was raving about this movie, so I finally decided to check it out. I could not even watch the whole thing, I got so bored and fed up with the cornball attempts at humor. ("We're gonna jam their radar!" and the spaceship shoots raspberry jam at the radar dish. Give me a break. Or how about all the dumb jewish jokes (the "Druish Princess") and weak plays on words - "May the Schwartz be with you"? Character names like "Pizza the Hut"? Mel Brooks has always had a weakness for obvious plays on words, but rarely are they as flat as this.)
Equally hackneyed are the "jokes" that rely on breaking the fourth wall (i.e. the actors acknowledging the audience) - there are several scenes where the characters make a big to-do about being in the middle of a movie called "Spaceballs" and it's all just pointless and obvious. I tried really hard to get into the "zaniness" of the Star Wars spoof, but it was just ... not funny.
The problem with this movie is that it tries way too hard to be funny and it is way too self-aware. The best parodies are the ones that are completely serious in delivering utterly absurd scenarios. But this movie felt like Mel Brooks was almost reminding the audience over and over that something funny was going on. If you have to be reminded to laugh, it ain't that funny.
A classic.......2007-07-24
Spaceballs is a wonderful movie that you can watch over and over. It is a great movie to watch on a plane or train. You will soon learn and repeat many lines from this film and each watch will gove you many laughs.
Believer in the Force? Trekkie? ...then watch THIS!.......2007-07-06
Listen up Star Wars, Star Trek, Bug Rogers, and Planet of the Apes fans. This DVD is a must-have for every fan of the previous mentioned movies who does not take his "fan-ship" to serious.
This movie is a well-done "persiflage" (I hope my French was right hehe) of all of them. It is the best Mel Brooks movie ever.
(Original review December 30, 2001)
This movie was a gift to sci-fi fans.......2007-06-12
I have been a Star Trek fan since I was 4 years old and a Star Wars fan ever since I was 7. Both TV/film franchises hold a special place in my heart. I was also a fan of Mel Brooks (I had seen History of the World: Part One countless times as well as Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, etc.)
Then, at the wonderful age of 17, I saw Spaceballs at the theater.
OH.....MY.....GOD!
From the opening scene when the gargantuan spaceship flies across the screen and keeps going and going and going and going, I knew I was in for a treat. For the first few seconds, I took the scene for what it was, but after I realized what Brooks was "saying" with the scene, I burst out laughing. How ingenius!
During the run of the film, I laughed so hard that my stomach and face muscles were sore for days afterward. Obviously, a lot of love went into this film. Great attention to detail was made when it came to the names, costumes, special effects, music, etc.
Much of the humor is juvenile, but that's what's so damn endearing about Spaceballs. The movie makes no aplogies for itself and attacks almost all popular sci-fi venues.
Obviously, the biggest influence of the film was Star Wars, but Spaceballs also pokes fun at Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes, Transformers, and even the old classic Bugs Bunny cartoons.
At the price this DVD is going for, you can't afford to pass up a classic film like this. Comedy fans will enjoy it, but sci-fi fans will love it that much more.

This hit-and-miss 1988 comedy pairs John Candy and Dan Aykroyd in a story of one family's summer vacation all but ruined by the uninvited appearance of another, more loutish family. Howard Deutch (Some Kind of Wonderful) directs from a half-hearted John Hughes script, which reduces Hughes's jokes-and-epiphanies formula (The Breakfast Club, Home Alone) to true gaudiness. On the other hand, Annette Bening makes her screen debut here. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, trailer, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Blue-Collar Comedy.......2007-08-12
This movie isn't some cutting edge, high brow comedy. What this movie is, is a throwback to those summer vacations you spent with your family in the north woods. You remember those summer vacations where you dad picked the woods, or mountains for vacation. You may not have been thrilled because you wanted to go to myrtle beach, but you went. Well, that's what happens with the characters in this movie, but they (unlike you and I) get into a few misadventures. In the process, you get to watch several entertaining episodes. You'll laugh and be thankful your trips to the woods weren't this strange. All in all, the movie is a good time, and one the few instances in which dan aykroyd is watchable. A good blast from the 80s, so enjoy!!!!
Great Comedy.......2007-07-08
This is not Academy Award material....it is not PC, not an epic, not a critically aclaimed educational biography, not an "uppercrust" movie.
It is.....totally funny, entertaining and has great scenery. It is what the "All American" person goes to see to be entertained, laugh, forget their problems (for the moment) and just be emersed in a wonderful movie.
It is John Candy and Dan Aykroyd at their best. Between the actors, the raccoons, the Big Bear, it has the whole enchilda. Believe me....this is one you can watch over and over again and not be bored.
One Laugh After Another!.......2007-02-07
This film cracks me up! I have watched it numerous times over the years and I still find every scene just as funny as I did the first time I watched it!
Two families come together to make this a great film. John Candy plays the kind, caring family man out to enjoy a family vacation with his wife and two sons at a cabin out in the wilderness in an area he enjoyed staying in as a boy with his family. Dan Aykroyd and his wife and two daughters decide to surprise Candy and his family by joining them on their vacation. Candy's character and Aykroyd's character are brother-in-laws and they are complete polar opposites in every sense of the word. Aykroyd's character is an annoying creep that thinks he's better than the next guy and is always doing the oneupmanship thing whenever he can. Mix Aykroyd's character and that of Candy's character and you have one laugh after another! Sit back, watch and enjoy this film!
You Gotta Love The Outdoors!!!.......2007-01-10
I think this is another one of John Candy's really funny movies!! I can't stop watching it!!!
Great Movie.......2007-01-10
If you like John Candy then you will love this movie - a true Candy Classic.

John Candy has one of his finest opportunities in this film by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) about a perpetual screw-up (Candy) who gets his act together enough to watch over his brother's kids effectively. The late actor scores big points resurrecting elements of his more decadent persona from SCTV days, but he also has some persuasively touching, sentimental moments. Hughes's direction is not as focused as it was only a few years before, but there's no mistaking his touch. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, biographies, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

batcall.......2007-06-28
John Hughes made some great comedies in th 80's and 90's, and this is one of them.
Uncle Buck Rocks!.......2007-02-18
Uncle Buck is absolutely hilarious, and no better actor then John Candy to play this role! Uncle Buck is a Slobby, Unorganized, Middle-Aged Man, and is asked by his brother to stay over his house, so he can take care of his 3 kids, while he and his wife are out of town visiting her sick father. Even though Uncle Buck seems like a careless slob, we get to see his paternal side as we see how he actually really cares for each of these children. Best scenes are the ones where he has to look after the oldest child who is a rebellious teenage girl, also starring in this film is a very young Macaluay Culkin and Gaby Hoffman as the 2 younger children. This movie is a classic, and I totally recommend it! Not to mention that it's a John Hughes film.
Uncle Buck.......2007-01-02
John Candy fans will like this movie. If your not a Fan, you will have mixed emotions.
FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY.......2006-12-21
I MISS JOHN CANDY. THIS IS ONE FUNNY MOVIE. GOOD OLD UNCLE BUCK. A CLASSIC.
John freaking Candy.......2006-11-20
He is the man... If you don't like John Candy, then you can get he f*ck out. He make a big*ss pancake then flips it with a snow shovel... Nobody messes with Uncle Buck. He is a force that is not to be reckoned with. So beware if he shows up at your house. If you don't find this helpful, slag off. Go and watch the damn movie...

Product Description
Based on a true story, this is the comedic saga of four Jamaican athletes going to extremes to compete as bobsled racers at the Winter Olympics. With few resources and virtually no clue about winter sports, it's an uphill course for this troupe from the tropics who are sliding on thin ice as they go for the gold in Calgary, Canada. Refusing to let anything stand in their way, these four Jamaicans enlist the help of a down-and-out ex-champion American slider named Irv. Unavoidably drawn back to a sport he had come to loathe, Irv is faced with coaching a team of complete novices. But once committed, he is determined to turn them around and to somehow right the wrongs of his own failed career. It's a bumpy ride but with pride, determination, and dignity, the bobsledders make their impossible dreams come true.

Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good, and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. --Tom Keogh

Cool Runnings.......2007-08-04
Love this movie. Very happy with this DVD. I had the same movie before but for some reason it would not play any more. Never had that happen with any other DVD I own.
Very Entertaining!.......2007-07-12
Excellent movie based on a true story about a group of Jamaican athletes who come together under difficult circumstances to compete in the olympics as a bobsled team! Very humorous, good comedy with very good acting. They picked all the right actors for each character. There are obstacles to overcome amongst themselves, in addition to external forces. You will applaud the ending!

This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. --Jenny Brown

Top fiddle.......2007-07-19
Awesome movie and excellent quality. Great for children and the whole family. This movie is a classic that the entire family can enjoy.
My most favorite movie.......2007-05-13
I love this musical, it is probably my most favorite of all time. I love the way it was filmed and all the characters.
Fantastic!.......2007-03-25
Fantastic musical. Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevya, and his family, coming to grips with changes in a small village Tzarist Russia. Changes to the vaunted Tradition first come small, in the form of his daughters wanting to pick their own spouses. It gets worse as the village confronts anti-semitism.
The music is classic - hard to imagine anyone not knowing at least half the score already. Tradition, Sunrise Sunset, L'haim to name a few... And Topol... It is safe to say he was born to play Tevya.
The irony is dark, and much is shown, but not told. Is the breaking of tradition good or bad? Where do traditions come from? Is moving on ultimately a bad or good thing?
DVD add-ins include extensive commentary from the director, Norman Jewison, who adds light and historical context to the story and it's making. Well worth catching those as well.
Sounds is a joke.......2007-03-24
Love this movie but this "special" edition is NOT. The sound a remastered 5.1 is actually 2.0 returned the product once and received more of the same. Buy it for sentimental values only
