Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a rollicking voyage in the same spirit of the two earlier Pirates films, yet far darker in spots (and nearly three hours to boot). The action, largely revolving around a pirate alliance against the ruthless East India Trading Company, doesn't disappoint, though the violence is probably too harsh for young children. Through it all, the plucky cast (Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush) are buffeted by battle, maelstroms, betrayal, treachery, a ferocious Caribbean weather goddess, and that gnarly voyage back from the world's end--but with their wit intact. As always, Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow tosses off great lines ; he chastises "a woman scorned, like which hell hath no fury than!" He insults an opponent with a string of epithets, ending in "yeasty codpiece."!

In the previous Dead Man's Chest, Sparrow was killed--sent to Davy Jones' Locker. In the opening scenes, the viewer sees that death has not been kind to Sparrow--but that's not to say he hasn't found endless ways to amuse himself, cavorting with dozens of hallucinated versions of himself on the deck of the Black Pearl. But Sparrow is needed in this world, so a daring rescue brings him back. Keith Richards' much ballyhooed appearance as Jack's dad is little more than a cameo, though he does play a wistful guitar. But the action, as always, is more than satisfying, held together by Depp, who, outsmarting the far-better-armed British yet again, causes a bewigged commander to muse: "Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?" As far as fans are concerned, it matters not. --A.T. Hurley

Description

Just when he's needed most, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), that witty and wily charmer of a pirate, is trapped on a sea of sand in Davy Jones' Locker. In an increasingly shaky alliance, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) begin a desperate quest to find and rescue him. Captain Jack's the last of the nine Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court who must come together united in one last stand to preserve the freedom-loving pirates' way of life. From exotic Singapore, to World's End and beyond, from Shipwreck Island, to a titanic battle, this adventure's filled with over-the-edge action, irreverent humor and seafaring myth and magic. Everything has led to this twisting, turning, wild swashbuckling ride in this final chapter of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pirates 3 = great movie!.......2007-09-11

I have to admit.....when the first Pirates came out I was one of those people saying it would be stupid and I would never watch it, but after some persuasion from my sister-in-law, thought I would give it a chance and you know what....I LOVED IT! I was hooked. I loved Dead Man's Chest and I could not wait until At World's End came out. It turned out to be just as adventurous and fun as the first 2! I am now PIRATES OBSESSED! And I loved that they kept the same characters through all 3 movies. I recommend this movie and the first 2 to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Writer Commentary??.......2007-09-06

All I have to say is that I sure hope this DVD has feature-length writer commentary from Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio like the previous films did, as it truly turned out to be a MAJOR highlight with those DVDs. I've read that they have not yet recorded any commentary, but they give so much needed insight (needed especially for this film in particular) that their commentary is a MUST. It would be a bit of a disappointment without.

1 out of 5 stars This Is Why Pirates Suck.......2007-09-05

Pirates have always made a terrible theme for a movie. You don't see a lot of big hits based on them do you? I enjoyed the first installment of the trilogy. The second took a sharp dive in the wrong direction. Now, if you took someone who had never seen the movies and told them to watch part one and then watch part 3 right after that, they would be disgusted with how awful the acting has gotten and worse how dull and dry the dialog as well as the story-line had gotten. If you watch all 3 in order you would hardly notice this, take out part two and it becomes more evident that the creators were in a rush to finish a story and get their pay checks.

5 out of 5 stars Why many people hate this movie.......2007-09-04

I think that i know the reason that many people say that the 3rd pirates movie was horrible. I think that it is because people don't watch after the credits!!! After the credits in the 1st movie it shows the monkey grabbing a coin from the chest, and becoming immortal, after the second movie it shows the dog on a throne with a crown, and a big bone in his mouth plus all of the island people are worshipping him!! and of course after the 3rd movie it shows Elizabeth walking towards the beach with her nine or 10 year old daughter, and then it shows Will appearing on davy Jone's (sorry if i spelled that wrong!) ship, and meeting Elizabeth and his daughter. SO IT ISN'T A SAD ENDING LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE THOUGHT IT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also if people couldn't follow the plot then maybe they should pay more attention!!!

1 out of 5 stars Pirates 3=Worst Movie of ALL TIME!.......2007-09-04

After being truly engrossed by the first two Pirates movies I was all set for the third movie but I could never have anticipated the letdown. I was stunned at the utter lack of a story in this truly awful movie. The Pirate Lords???? Hallucinatory Jack seeing multple Jack Sparrows??? Swann as Pirate King???? Keith Richards never looked so uncool and silly. What trash. Don't listen to the people who start their reviews of this movie with "I don't care what people say, I loved this movie" It's a lie. Nobody could love this movie and I was a HUGE fan of the first 2. I have never got up and walked out of a movie but I never came closer than this garbage. I couldn't wait for it to be over it was so stupid. Not only will I not buy this DVD to complete the trilogy, but At World's End was so horrid it actually lowered my opinion of the first two. Stay away and hope Depp & Co. actually try with the next one.

In its second season, "The Odd Couple was filmed before a live studio audience," and a good sitcom was well on its way to becoming a great one. Jack Klugman, as sloppy Oscar, and Tony Randall as fussy Felix, two divorced men trying to live together without driving each other crazy, was casting alchemy, and as time goes by, we appreciate the fundamental things that still apply: smart, character-based writing and indelible performances. While there are no episodes that can be said to be truly classic, several are fan favorites, including "Sleepwalker," which was included as one of the bonus episodes on the first-season set, "Felix the Calypso Singer," in which Felix becomes the third wheel on Oscar's romantic getaway with his girlfriend, and "You Saved My Life," in which Felix almost kills Oscar with kindness after Oscar rescues him. This season fleshes out the mismatched friends' backstory with two fun flashback episodes. In "Speak for Yourself," Oscar is forced to step in when Felix develops laryngitis on the night he was to propose to his future ex-wife Gloria, and in "A Night to Dismember," a season benchmark, Oscar, Felix, and Oscar's ex-wife, Blanche, have different memories of the fateful night on which Oscar and Blanche split up.

Gone this season are the daffy Pigeon sisters. Introduced are Janis Hansen as Gloria, Joan Hotchkis as Oscar's girlfriend, Dr. Nancy Cunningham, and Brett Somers, a perfect match, as the dread Blanche. A pre-Laverne and Shirley Penny Marshall makes her first appearance as Oscar's secretary, Myrna, and in the episode, "Security Arms," that's John Fiedler, who portrayed Vinnie in the original 1968 Odd Couple movie (he is also the instantly recognizable voice of Piglet in the Disney Winnie the Pooh shorts). In later seasons, The Odd Couple overindulged on stunt casting (remember the Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs episode?) This second season offers comedian David Steinberg ("The Odd Couple Meets Their Host") and opera singer Richard Fredricks ("Does Your Mother Know You're Out, Rigoletto?"). The Odd Couple was a series that got better with each season. This live incarnation of the show is the one that is most fondly remembered, making the second season one that, unlike Felix, will never wear out its welcome. --Donald Liebenson

Two divorced New Yorkers---a slob and a fussbudget---try to live together `without driving each other crazy' in this classic sitcom based on Neil Simon's hit play and movie. Both Jack Klugman and Tony Randall won Emmys in the leads, the latter in the final year of a five-season run. `Now if I only had a job,' Randall said at the Emmy gala. The show inspired two remakes, one an animated series portraying the main characters as a cat and a dog, and a 1982-83 version with a mostly black cast.

5 out of 5 stars BRAVO PARAMOUNT!!! FELIX AND OSCAR ROCK!!! BRING ON SEASON 3!!!.......2007-09-12

First of all I have to say thank you Paramount for not taking too long to realize that The Odd Couple was worthy of being released on dvd from their original studio, and you did not take forever to release Season 2!!!

Needless to say these episodes were like candy and I ate up every last one in less than a week!!! My all-time favorites were Fat Farm, A night to dismember ( a very funny guest appearance by Joan Van Ark), The Greyhound Golden Earrings, and Security Arms. The chemistry was pure magic the way Oscar would play off of the insanity of Felix. Oh, and how could I forget to mention the episode Hospital Mates.

I loved this show so much that I would even sit through the opening before every episode, because it cracks me up the way the narrator would talk and see Felix's face as he's being thrown out the door, only to turn back and have his wife's hand sticking out to give him a frying pan! REQUESTING THAT HE NEVER RETURN!!! Well, I hope us diehard fans won't have to wait in vain for Season 3!!!

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT!! NO EDITS!!.......2007-09-06

Based on the reviews I'm reading, I've come to two conclusions:
1 - This is an excellent collection of Odd Couple episodes, in their original, un-edited form, that any fan should own!
2 - The only mistake made was putting a mis-leading disclaimer (edits & music changes) on the box. I hope it doesn't discourage sales. This needs to be fixed by Paramount....
It's all intact -- BUY THE SET!

5 out of 5 stars No Music Edits? Thank God!.......2007-09-02

I am not of the opinion that editing the music out of this series is a nitpicky concern, it would be the bull without the horns, so I am thrilled that these classic episodes remain untouched. If we all put our heads on our desks for a few moments, we'll realize that it's really outrageous for us to have expected anything else, isn't it? The way they have us trained!
This is a brilliant series, I really recommend it to people as a sort of yardstick, because if you watch these shows, and you don't "get it," with all due respect, there's something wrong with you!! DO SOMETHING, AND DO IT NOW!

Ah, it's getting late, and I must go, see, my curtain goes up on time, not like those clowns over at Lincoln Center!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-09-02

I just finished watching the second season and was incredibly pleased. The quality is amazing! I watched it on my 50" Plasma and couldn't believe the details I had missed back in the 70's. Felix and Oscar look a bit more wrinkled, but it adds to their character!

Do not hesitate to buy this second season - it's worth every dime!

I only worry that they'll do what so many others are doing, which is to stop offering new seasons such as, Leave it to Beaver, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart, etc. I was so looking forward to owning all seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Tony and Jack Found their Groove in Season 2.......2007-09-01

The First season has a few gems but it was in Season 2 that The Odd Couple really took off. These episodes are absolute classics and I'm loving every minute of it. The fat farm scene has had me in stitches since the 70's. "Are you gonna eat your desert". There are so many memorable lines in these episodes. Couldn't be happier that this is finally available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best visuals from the series.......2007-09-11

This was a fantastic last season for the cartoon Samurai Jack. Some of these episodes seemed the most artistic of the series, from the fight between "Jack versus the Ninja", or the very retro-Japanese movie feel of "Robo-Samurai vs Mondo-Bot," not to mention the shifting of focus from our main samurai friend to "The Four Seasons of Death" or "The Tale of X-9." And lastly, a great two-part episode including the Scotsman (who... outside the main characters of Samurai Jack and Aku, is the best recurring character you could ask for).

If you're unfamiliar with Samurai Jack in general then you'd be in for a visual treat with any of the box sets. The cartoon includes some fantastic action sequences mixed with a grand movie feel.

The last piece of the puzzle is still waiting to be put together, a final feature film to give the series an ending it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars "He who runs with aggression walks without dignity.".......2007-09-03

Unpredictable. Illogical. Impossible. He is THE ONE! Samurai Jack--defender of truth, freedom, and talking dogs--is back for a fourth and final season of futuristic hacking and slashing. Set 4's two discs come in a cardboard slipcase, tastefully decorated in a gold honeycomb pattern with Aku's hideous likeness prominently featured on the front (unless your fold-out disc-holder is upside-down and backwards, as mine was). Disc 2 includes a nice selection of extras like promos, deleted scenes, and a very interesting visit with the show's creators entitled, `Genndy's Roundtable.'

Among these thirteen stellar episodes is the hilarious two-parter, `The Scotsman Saves Jack,' in which we meet a goofy guy in a red jacket by the name of Brent Worthington, who just happens to look exactly like Jack. In episode XLII, Jack encounters a hip-hoppin', jive-talkin' "Sam-u-rai," and teaches him that, "You can never defeat another if you know not how to defeat yourself."

In XLI, Jack traverses the devastated streets of Andromeda and is attacked by the awesome Mondo-bot. The frightened robotic Andromedan citizens lead the wandering samurai warrior to a Gundam-like mobile suit and Jack attacks the Mondo-bot Voltron style.

Episode XLIII begins with yet another battle with the fiendish Aku. But this time, Aku calls the fight off early because he's afflicted with a nasty cold virus. Unfortunately, before leaving, the shape-shifting villain coughs up a piece of himself...a piece which Jack accidentally swallows! Our hero is slowly but surely possessed by the evil black spirit of all-enshrouding Akuness, and so he must travel to the watery temple of the lizard-monks for help.

XLVII is an obvious homage to 'Star Wars,' featuring the butterfly-like Prince Astor and Princess Verbina of Alepidopterans. The insectoid siblings (along with their golden assistant, Chitron 6) are relentlessly pursued by Squoomian gunships as they leave their home on Chrysalis to search for their royal navy. They crash-land in Samurai Jack's world and are quickly captured by Aku's demonic minions.

Episode L introduces an emotional robot hit man in a black trench coat and wingtip shoes who's pining for his little lost dog, Lulu, a.k.a. "sweet thing." The merciless Aku is holding Lulu hostage in order to coax her mechanized owner out of retirement. Aku wants Samurai Jack terminated, and the twin pistol-wielding dog-lover is more than willing to do the job...as soon as the rain stops.

So, at long last, all of Jack's adventures are available on DVD. But, it is a bit disappointing to learn that, like `Lost in Space,' this spectacular series does not have a satisfactory finale. Genndy Tartakovsky says there might be a Samurai Jack movie someday. Let's hope that day comes very soon. In the meantime, the screaming baby episode will have to do.

5 out of 5 stars THERE ARE NO WORDS...........2007-08-30

I just got the set today and started watching immediately... it only took a few minutes to realize this show completely exceeds all expecations and totally blows you away. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SHOW!!! What spectacular visuals, stories, and fighting scenes. I can't begin to describe just how well done the episodes are. This is truly the cream of the crop. I will watch this dozens of times more and never tire... If you are a fan of any sort of action or anime, pick this up!! Truly one of the best of all time.

4 out of 5 stars The Final Jack-down.......2007-08-24

You knew this day would come eventually. It's the fourth, and sadly last, season of one of the greatest action series that has ever graced the airwaves of Cartoon Network: Samurai Jack. The series created by Genndy Tartakofsky (Of Clone Wars and Dexter's Lab fame) may have reached its end, but Jack's quest still continues nonetheless. As long as he has his powerful sword and his vengeance toward Aku, the story will never end.

And now, here's my very last top five episodes from season four. Here goes.

5. "Jack and the Baby" - Jack discovers a infant boy and takes the child along with him. Now he must find the baby's mother and fast.

4. "Jack and the Four Seasons of Death" - Jack faces the dangers of winter, spring, summer, and autumn. And by dangers I mean the perils that each season spawns.

3. "The Aku Infection" - An unwell Aku sneezes on Jack and pretty soon, Aku's evil has taken over Jack's body.

2. "The Scotsman Saves Jack" (parts 1 & 2) - The Scotsman, one of Jack's allies, attempts to rescue Jack who has lost his memory. After rescuing his friend, the Scotsman and the Samurai challenge each other to see who's the best.

1. "Jack vs. Aku" - It's the ultimate showdown as Jack and Aku go one-on-one with each other.

Honorable mention: "Robo-Samurai vs. Mondo-Bot" - Jack has been proclaimed the "Chosen One" in a new city. He then enters the body of the Robo-Samurai and attempts to defeat the evil Mondo-Bot destroying the city.

Don't forget to check out a couple of special features which are a commentary with the creators of the show and a cool how-to-draw featurette.

Well, they say that all good things must come to an end. And a series as good as Samurai Jack might as well end, too. Jack's adventures still continue in Cartoon Network Action Pack comic books, but those won't compare to the brilliant award-winning series that won the hearts of many viewers. (And as weird as it seems, there was an episode of "Duck Dodgers" that was totally inspired by this series.)

Either way, have faith in the Samurai. No matter what.

5 out of 5 stars it's out!.......2007-08-22

don't know why amazon still has samurai jack listed as "pre-order" It's Aug. 22 and I got Samurai Jack, season 4 at Hastings today. Great animation!!! Assigned to us by our animation teacher as an example of how great imagination and a good story always beats out high tech 2 and 3-D animation any day. Doesn't matter how old you are you will enjoy these stories. If you like Samurai Jack, check out Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends...done by staff related to SJ. Also check out the beautiful art and story-telling in the comic books by Stan Sakai, Usagi Yojimbo....the samurai bunny....similar themes of honorable self-effacing samurai helping the downtrodden.

1 out of 5 stars Buy the DVD version instead - until Disney re-release it........2007-09-08

Disney will be re-releasing this version as it contains 9 minutes of incorrectly framed footage. In this Blu-ray version people are being decapitated, and not by pirates! For those 9 minutes, the framing is about 12% lower than it should be.

The DVD version is framed 100% correctly - so buy that one until Disney issues a new Blu-ray release of this title.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware! Heads lopped off!.......2007-09-05

There is a serious framing problem for 9 minutes of the movie, where the frame is lower than it should be. So you will be looking at groins and torsos instead of full faces.

1 out of 5 stars Misframed for 10 min.......2007-09-03

About 9 or 10 min of this film is framed incorrectly. The sequence in question is the sword fight between Jack Sparrow and Will Turner in the blacksmith's shop. The image is shifted down so at some points the actors are actually delivering dialog with their heads cut off. I would avoid ordering this title until Disney issues a corrected version.

1 out of 5 stars Big framing problem on Blu-ray version.......2007-08-30

Disney made some mistakes on the Blu-ray release and some scenes are misframed. The original film was shot using the Super 35 process (1.85:1) and cut to a 2:35:1 ratio for theaters and home release. Some scenes that required framing at the top of the film image were center cut instead, so heads are cut off, and there are numerous revealing mistakes such as exposed floorboards when they should be fighting on rafters 10 ft off the ground! I would wait for a corrected version.

1 out of 5 stars Problems with Playback.......2007-08-25

I have a Samsung BDP 1000 - in the BD package from Disney you get 2 disks, one special features and the game and the movie itself. The movie is unplayable even with the latest firmware update for the player but strangely the Special features disk is fine. Unfortunately I am returning these 2 disney Pirates BD's

Disney's 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams's improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar's parrot). --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Williams Makes This An Animated Classic.......2007-09-09

I can think of three quick reasons why this has remained one of the best animated movies ever: 1 - Very good, very catchy songs that still sound good 15 years later; 2 - excellent, colorful visuals; 3 - the unique humor of Robin Williams, who seems to spout a joke-a- second. In fact, you have to pay close attention to hear Williams' lines because they come so fast and furious. Actually, at times they are too fast. You hardly have time to laugh or digest what he just said when another line hits you. Williams' genie character doesn't appear on screen until after the first third of the film is over.

Without all those jokes - and the great visuals that go with those gags (things popping up like Saturday morning cartoons), this would just be a routine Disney animated film. Part of the normal Disney fare includes a hero who is a good guy but a liar and a heroine who is the typical wasp-waisted beauty who is rebellious against the rules of the day.

Maybe the best attribute of this film is simply how fast it moves, meaning it's very, very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Aladdin.......2007-09-09

5 out of 5 stars Probably my favorite Disney movie of all time.......2007-08-23

Its always hard to choose a 'favorite' but this is probably it for me. I can't get enough of it. I've seen it probably over 100 times and it never gets old. Its just perfect in every way from the animation to the acting to the awesome songs. Every scene is a treat to watch, nothing is wasted. I even love the evil characters. It really doesn't get any better or more magical then this. Every child and adult alike should watch this.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Disney film.......2007-08-18

The "monster" genie scenes frightened our children initially when they were three years old. Now, at four, it is one of the most their frequently requested DVD's.

Watching this DVD and getting to know the Aladdin characters seemed to enhance our recent trip to EuroDisney for our children.

Definite must-have addition to the children's DVD library.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A FILM THAT CAN BE ENJOYED LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF TIMES.......2007-08-06

We literally wore out 3 Disney VHS editions of this film before it was released on DVD. Now several years later, our youngster watches this film just as much as ever and we enjoy seeing it with him: OVER & OVER & OVER!!

SOUNDS GREAT - LOOKS GREAT & IT'S GOT ROBIN WILLIAMS & AN EXCITING PLOT TOO!

IN A NUTSHELL: A WHOLE NEW WORLD & IT INCLUDES ROBIN WILLIAMS AS THE GENIE

This DVD release of 'Aladdin' by Disney is a treat for audiences regardless of age. It is one of the few films I can think of that both children and their parents may equally enjoy, and this Platinum Edition DVD is the best way I know to bring Aladdin into our homes.

WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT: BOY MEETS GIRL - BOY MUST BE WORTHY OF GIRL ON HIS OWN MERITS!

Jasmine is 'PRINCESS JASMINE' and she must be married to a prince before her 18th birthday, which is in three days, as the film opens. Needless to say, she is less than excited by the suitors who have presented to claim her. "Another Stuffed Shirt - Swaggering Peacock", to use her words. After deciding to runaway - without planning for any expenses or anything for that matter - she runs into Aladdin during a street market fracas caused by her lack of currency, and is saved by Aladdin from the knife point of a greedy merchant. Thinking that Jasmine was just an ordinary girl, Aladdin set his sights on her, but found it was necessary to flee from the palace guards several times with Jasmine in tow. Aladdin discovers to his chagrin, as Jasmine declares her identity to the palace guards, that she is no ordinary girl, which puts her out of Aladdin's reach.

BUT THIS IS ONLY WHERE THE STORY BEGINS: ALADDIN: "THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"

Believe it or not, the film goes along happily for over 40 minutes before Robin Williams makes his entrance as the Genie. By this time we know that Aladdin must elevate his station to attain the hand of 'Princess Jasmine' - but how?

A PRINCESS MUST BE MARRIED TO A PRINCE! BUT PRINCE ALI?

Acquiring the services of the Genie for three wishes has made it possible for Aladdin to elevate his station rather profoundly by simply wishing for it. So Prince Ali is born, along with a terrific song, lyrics and video action. Unfortunately, wishing does not make one different on the inside, and this Prince Ali charade is doomed from the start. But ---- Aladdin will elevate himself and redeem the trust which Princess Jasmine was beginning to place in him, on his own merit.

THERE IS STILL MORE--LOTS MORE: ONE CAN'T JUST WISH FOR SELF-IMPROVEMENT-ASK ALADDIN

This film has a lovely story and wonderful animation, but it also has Robin Williams who gives a truly over-the-top performance as the Genie. He is the Genie and is so quick and witty and glib that audiences, regardless of age, will really zone in on his delivery. His role clearly demonstrates that one cannot simply change or improve oneself by simply wishing for it. This type of change and improvement comes from within and we go back to the theme 'the diamond in the rough'.

No decent hero can be much of a hero without a fiendish and sly villain over whom to prevail. 'Jafar' and his evil sidekick 'Iago' provide the needed balance to present Aladdin with a real obstacle. Jafar readily grabs at the chance to elevate his standing by wishing for it, and first wishes to be the Sultan, then the "most powerful sorcerer in the world" and ultimately the "all-powerful genie". This leads him down the path that Aladdin did not take and we get to see exactly what Jafar reaps in the end, which demonstrates that the only way to improve oneself is by exerting an honest effort, not just wishing for it.

IN THE END: WE GET BACK TO WHERE WE BEGAN - "A PRINCESS MUST BE MARRIED TO A PRINCE"

Aladdin must defeat Jafar on his own and in so doing may redeem himself fully in the eyes of Jasmine and her father, the Sultan.

Martin Scorsese makes a welcome return to the mean streets (of Boston, in this case) with The Departed, hailed by many as Scorsese's best film since Casino. Since this crackling crime thriller is essentially a Scorsese-stamped remake of the acclaimed 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, the film was intensely scrutinized by devoted critics and cinephiles, and while Scorsese's intense filmmaking and all-star cast deserve ample acclaim, The Departed is also worthy of serious re-assessment, especially with regard to what some attentive viewers described as sloppy craftsmanship (!), notably in terms of mismatched shots and jagged continuity. But no matter where you fall on the Scorsese appreciation scale, there's no denying that The Departed is a signature piece of work from one of America's finest directors, designed for maximum impact with a breathtaking series of twists, turns, and violent surprises. It's an intricate cat-and-mouse game, but this time the cat and mouse are both moles: Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is an ambitious cop on the rise, planted in the Boston police force by criminal kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hot-tempered police cadet who's been artificially disgraced and then planted into Costello's crime operation as a seemingly trustworthy soldier. As the multilayered plot unfolds (courtesy of a scorching adaptation by Kingdom of Heaven screenwriter William Monahan), Costigan and Sullivan conduct a volatile search for each other (they're essentially looking for "themselves") while simultaneously wooing the psychiatrist (Vera Farmiga) assigned to treat their crime-driven anxieties.

Such convenient coincidences might sink a lesser film, but The Departed is so electrifying that you barely notice the plot-holes. And while Nicholson's profane swagger is too much "Jack" and not enough "Costello," he's still a joy to watch, especially in a film that's additionally energized by memorable (and frequently hilarious) supporting roles for Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, and a host of other big-name performers. The Departed also makes clever and plot-dependent use of cell-phones, to the extent that it couldn't exist without them. Powered by Scorsese's trademark use of well-chosen soundtrack songs (from vintage rock to Puccini's operas), The Departed may not be perfect, but it's one helluva ride for moviegoers, proving popular enough to become the biggest box-office hit of Scorsese's commercially rocky career. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Rookie cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) grew up in crime. That makes him the perfect mole, the man on the inside of the mob run by boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). It's his job to win Costello's trust and help his detective handlers (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen) bring Costello down. Meanwhile, SIU officer Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) has everyone's trust. No one suspects he's Costello's mole. How these covert lives cross, double-cross and collide is at the ferocious core of the widely acclaimed The Departed. Martin Scorsese directs, guiding a cast for the ages in a visceral tale of crime and consequences. This is searing, can't-look-away filmmaking: like staring into the eyes of a con - or a cop - with a gun.

2 out of 5 stars Scorsese made this?.......2007-09-14

First, Scorsese is a genius. He really is. Watch five minutes of Taxi Driver or Raging Bull or Goodfellas and you know it. The Departed is not even close to what he has done before. It's a TV show. Of course, there's Jack Nicholson being JACK. I have to admit that DiCaprio is a great actor, but this isn't really worth the time to watch. It falls short in both narrative and acting.

3 out of 5 stars Departed.......2007-09-14

I'm a loyal fan of Scorsese but this one didn't make it to the top. The plot was twisty and the ending unexpected but it left lots of question marks. It felt incomplete.

3 out of 5 stars The Good & Bad Of 'The Departed'.......2007-09-08

A big collection of well-known male actors headed by veteran Jack Nicholson give standout performances. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon play guys who are both working both sides of the fence and the big suspense revolves around their characters and if they will be found out. The acting is so good it keeps you riveted to the screen.

I did get tired of all the f-words. Usually I could care less, but over 250 of them? Sometimes it seemed like every sentence. It was ludicrous and after awhile, your senses seemed bombarded with it. Every character in here is a scumbag: an untrustworthy person who will sleep with anyone and lie to everyone. Baldwin's character, as an FBI director, was the most ridiculous of them all. Both of these faults are typical for a Martin Scorcese film. Sorry, Marty, but not every person in the world is a low-life. Nonethelss, to be fair, his movies - like this one - are usually interesting, just the sordid stuff done to excess. If you can put up with the latter, you'll like this film a lot.

I do agree with the Amazon reviewers here who think it's a sad comment this won "Picture Of The Year."

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie.......2007-09-08

Awesome is all I can say. This movie keeps you plastered to your seat. The ending is absolutely unexpected.

2 out of 5 stars Big let-down........2007-09-06

I heard so many good things about this movie so I figured it had to be good, so I bought it. Then the problem came when I was watching it, monotony. For a movie labeled as suspense it didn't have very much. Aside from top-rate acting, this movie suffers from a number of issues regarding the speed at which the story moves, such as: slow, slow, and slow. On top of the story running slow, the ending was the most pitiful attempt I've seen in ages. Anyways, I watch a lot of movies, and this one does not show up on must-watch radar in my opinion.

2/5 stars for Jack Nicholson only.

During the 1980s, one cartoon series ruled the airwaves... The Transformers. This paragon of consumerism was created with a dual purpose--to entertain and to galvanize children to buy the toys. Somewhere along the line, the show became a cult favorite, so in 1986 they fashioned an epic tale of good versus evil specifically for the big screen. The result looked vaguely like an animated remake of Star Wars. Who are the Transformers? The good guys are the Autobots: Optimus Prime, SoundWave, Jazz, Ultra Magnus, and many more. Their mortal enemies are the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron and StarScream. The Autobots must save their home planet from an evil entity known as Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles). At the same time, they must defend themselves from an all-out attack from the Decepticons. Along the way, lives are lost, battles are fought, and a new Autobot leader is born as another dies. The story and action never stop in a thrilling ride that often makes you forget that you're watching an '80s cartoon with inferior graphics. The violence will also come as a mild shock to those who haven't seen this film for a while--definitely a movie for the 8 and over audience. For those who grew up on this series, this is a movie that must be watched. Unlike cartoon serials before and after, The Transformers relied on solid stories and interesting characters, a manifesto the film itself upholds with gusto and grace while also being morally responsible. Don't underestimate this movie; there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. --Jeremy Storey

5 out of 5 stars original transformers movie.......2007-09-13

The movie is excellent, the visuals and audio have all been updated to todays standards. The movie brought back memories from the 1980's. Any one that used to watch the original (G1) transformers should buy this. I also believe that new audiences will also find this a pleasure. The action is great and so is the plot.

4 out of 5 stars Beware if this video is for a child.......2007-09-11

I bought this DVD for my son because he absolutely loves Transformers. There are some things you should know before you buy it for your child. Optimus Prime dies. My son cried. He was crushed. I had never seen the movie so it was a bit of a shock. I spent my weekend explaining death.
As a mom, I think it is violent, but at least there is no blood. I think they blow up when killed. I did notice they said the four letter "S" word and "damn it". This is a heads up if you were buying it for a child. Over all it is a great movie, just think twice if your child is young.

5 out of 5 stars Took me back to my childhood.......2007-09-08

If you are a true Transformers fan, you will appreciate the movie, commentary and extras that were included in the DVD. This is truly a prize for Transformers fans of all ages!

5 out of 5 stars Still good after all of these years........2007-09-05

The DVD version of this movie was great. The color and sound was better than in the VHS version. I took my boys to see this movie when it first came out. As a story, it has stood the test of time.

The folks at Pixar can do no wrong with Monsters, Inc., the studio's fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (wonderfully voiced by John Goodman) is a scare-monster extraordinaire in the hidden world of Monstropolis, where the scaring of kids is an imperative in order to keep the entire city running. Beyond the competition to be the best at the business, Sullivan and his assistant, the one-eyed Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), discover what happens when the real world interacts with theirs in the form of a 2-year-old baby girl dubbed "Boo," who accidentally sneaks into the monster world with Sulley one night. Director Pete Doctor and codirectors David Silverman and Lee Unkrich follow the Pixar (Toy Story) blueprint with an imaginative scenario, fun characters, and ace comic timing. By the last heart-tugging shot, kids may never look at monsters the same, nor artists at what computer animation can do in the hands of magicians. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Wish there were a sequel!.......2007-06-28

It was that good! Unfortunately they didn't leave a door open for a sequel. Great story about the Monsters all little kids fear in their bed at night, and their interaction with those kids. It gives you the persepective from the other side of your closet door where the Monsters live. The characters are very lovable. Great, great comedy sequences, you will be laughing out loud! Unique story line. "Loving" out-come. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! What a great movie.. This movie should live on FOREVER!!!.......2007-06-22

This movie was great and it was really enjoyable and funny. I have had this movie since it came out as I went to see it in the movie theater. This would be my favorite movie of all time. Sulley(James P. Sullivan) and Mike Wazowski (the main characters of this movie) are my favorite characters in this movie and are my two favorite characters in any movie. Randall Boggs would be my third favorite character in the movie because he makes me LAUGH!! But he gets destroyed into a trailor during my favorite part of the movie which is when Mike and Sulley are hanging or flying on doors to try to get Boo home. Boo is my least favorite character in this movie because she CRIES a lot during the movie and just not my favorite. Celia, who Mike is in love with isn't all that great too. But I think Roz is great. She makes me laugh when she tells Mike that he didn't turn in his paperwork. and Mr. Waternoose would be my 5th and last most favorite character in this movie till he gets arrested by the CDA. Also, the part where Mike and Sulley go to Himalayas is great because they're in a BLIZZARD!! The worst part of the movie is when Sulley and Mike take Boo home that's when I feel to cry. But overall, this is a really great movie which I wish I could give this 10 stars. Please get this movie but Shrek s$cked!!!
Best film of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Power-ful Kiddie Entertainment.......2007-06-21

Some of the best stories for children have presented their worst fears only to have the menace brought down to size. "Jack and the Beanstalk" works that way perfectly. 'Monsters, Inc.' helps to tuck the kiddies in and give them the giggles, too. Taking near day-glow colors, the Monsters in this fluid Pixar picture are hideously cute. They live in a "green" world where the renewable resource of children's fright powers the Monster community. Looking like the sorts in (Lucas Films, Ltd. is credited here) a 'Star Wars' bar scene, the film's focus is on the power company where the employees go through magic doors, their portals to children's bedrooms where the fright factor generates their power plant.

Heading the troops is big blue "Sully" (John Goodman) a good natured monster, proud of his ability to be the equivalent of "Employee of the Month". Keeping track of his generating power, he is out to set a plant record. His green, one-eyed sidekick, Mike Wazowski, (Billy Crystal) has a Martian appearance, but his voice couldn't scare a mouse. He is smitten by one-eyed purple princess, Shroopsy with hydra hair (snake braids). They all face their competition with rascally Randall, (perfectly villainous, Steve Buscemi) the salamander-like monster with invisible capabilities. Pivotal to the plot is Mr. Waternoose, (James Coburn) a tycoon who resembles a tarantula in a three-piece suit. In the causality is 'Silkwood'-like contamination if any child or remnant remains in the Monster world. (In other words: Just like parents often say about insects or some animals: "They're more afraid of [children], than [they] are of them.") Sully and James come across "Boo" whom they find in their best interests to return to the dark realm of her own bedroom.

Formidable to the fore, 'Monsters,..." takes a premise that could have been a dumb non-starter, and provides supporting plot structures with enough heft to turn the adventure on. With Pixar animation, the movement is flowing enough to take the technological edge off the look, and Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson's screenplay keep the dialogue fresh and funny. Director Pete Docter gives the movie proper assembly. 'Monsters, Inc.' is therapeutically good for children's dreamscapes as well as their funny bones. (Highly recommended to rent and to own.)

5 out of 5 stars Pixar Created A Classic!.......2007-06-14

Monsters Inc is a great piece that your family will love! Loveable monsters are brought to life and make you laugh a lot! Laughter is more powerful than screams you know. A loveable classic for any collection!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-06-13

Hey it's Mike,
Wow!! What a great movie this is. This is by far my favorite movie due to the presence of Mike and Sulley. There is not a lot of great movies out there, but this one is one of the very best!! Sulley, Mike, Randall, Roz, and Waternoose are all great characters and 3 of them are really funny! Boo and Celia are my two least favorite characters in the film. The best part of this movie is the Flying on Doors part where Randall gets destroyed.
The end is the saddest part of the movie when Sulley and Mike take Boo home.

Well this movie is the best as I wish that I can give this much more than 5 stars like a million stars. Please buy.
