It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A DOGS WORLD IN 'THE LADY AND THE TRAMP'.......2007-07-26

FIRST OFF:

Beautiful, soft, colorful animation with incredible detail brings this character driven doggie-tale to life. The songs, like all great animated classics work into the plot and are a great aid in telling the story, making the film entertaining and making children of all ages happy.

BUT THERE IS MORE -- MUCH MORE: DOG'S TELL THEIR OWN TALE!

Dog's tell their own tale in this one. Unlike "101 Dalmations", which Disney also made several years after this film, the humans are basically not substancial characters. The humans' role is simply as a background setting for the tale of the Lady and the Tramp, which is completely appropriate for this kind of tale.

WHAT MAKES "THE LADY AND THE TRAMP SO DARN GOOD"?

1]- The 9 "Old Men" were really at the top of their game when they animated the major characters of the film. In the featurette, in the 50th anniversary edition, we see exactly what these very talented guys were aiming for and some of the interesting stuff they came up with for Walt Disney.

2]- The music and lyrics are well timed, entertaining and really help set up the many varying moods of the individual scenes. The soundtrack also furthers the plot, and helps us to really like who and what we are seeing on the screen. In short, the tunes help to humanize the doggies, and in that way assist in telling a multi-level tale that means something to kids, something to adults, and something collectively to everyone. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "The Incredibles" also clearly illustrate that multi-level trait.

3]- The story itself is well constructed with clever while appropriate dialogue, and a very eclectic blend of characters with dogs and humans both being from a very broad and diverse background.

The small town, on the verge of the modern age, still is a special and desirable place to be in this film. Things like telephones and early automobiles are just barely hinted at in a few scenes.

4]- Cinemascope was used, for one of the first times in this film, and simply put it makes for a larger, broader world with a lot more background animation. Disney actually filmed two completely drawn versions of this film, Cinemascope [widescreen], and Full-Screen, because many theatres were not equipped to play cinemascope films in 1956.

5 out of 5 stars Lady and the Tramp.......2007-06-26

One of Disney's most endearing family classics, "Tramp" is a marvel of lively animation, bright voice acting, and sensational songwriting, courtesy of the inimitable Peggy Lee (who also voices the sinister twin kitties, Si and Am.) Watching a pampered female pooch fall for a declassé but charismatic male doggie is not only fun but enlightening about the magic of mutual attraction. And the famous spaghetti-slurping scene leading to a surprise first kiss is charming no matter how many times you view it. Highlights include the vamp-y "He's a Tramp" and "Siamese Cat Song."

5 out of 5 stars It's Lady And The Tramp And We Love It!.......2007-06-25

LADY AND THE TRAMP is my favorite of all the Disney animated films. It has great memorable characters from the down on her luck show dog Peg (voiced by the fabulous Peggy Lee who also voices a couple of other characters) to Aunt Sarah's sly pair of Siamese cats. The music is also among the best from Disney with "Bella Noche", Quiet As a Snowflake" and especially "He's A Tramp" with the wonderful dog pound chorus as well as a couple of other memorable songs. The film touts the virtures of both pure bred dogs like the beautiful sweet Cocker Spaniel Lady and also the advantages of mixed breeds like her clever Heinz 57 mate Tramp. This movie is a must for dog lovers and can be enjoyed by all ages.

Maverick director Michael Winterbottom wondered about the double standard of why novels can have explicit sex scenes and be legit and films could not. So his short film of a relationship based solely on sex and a love for music is the result of that thought. If the definition of a porn film is to shoot actors performing graphic sex scenes for real, then 9 Songs qualifies. It certainly doesn't feel or look like your standard whoopdee-do XXX feature. It's as glossy and low-budget arty as Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People or I Want You. But yeah, Matt and Lisa do everything to each other, and the actors are not "just acting" in some of the sex scenes. No matter how landmark the movie might be, there is not much story here (at least a book with hot sex often has a good story to it). Lisa is an American drifter in London who hooks up with Matt, a scientist who studies glaciers in Antarctica. They have sex and visit nine rock concerts including Franz Ferdinand and The Dandy Warhols. As advertised, you can't find these musical performances anywhere else, but we just see them from way back in the crowd. The film has an essence of how someone can find bliss in another person's body, and the emotional, magical weight that can hold over you. But that spell doesn't last. Since the sex is real, Winterbottom had to cast unknown actors, and they really don't make an impression, especially with the lack of story. --Doug Thomas

Description

Matt, a young glaciologist, soars across the vast, silent, icebound immensities of the South Pole as he recalls his love affair with Lisa. They meet at a mobbed rock concert in a vast music hall - London's Brixton Academy. They are in bed at night's end. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs. Featuring nine live concert performances not available anywhere else by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Franz Ferdinand and Michael Nyman. Special features include a Concert Performance-only option.

5 out of 5 stars Good Fun.......2007-09-13

This movie was a lot of fun for me. The music was great and the way they filmed the performances made you feel like you were there. There are some real sex scenes that kind of made me feel like I was a spying on the couple, but it was appropriately done. It didn't feel like porn at all and made me wonder, what makes porn porn?

3 out of 5 stars Interesting premise, thin execution.......2007-09-13

I keep wanting to like movies like 9 Songs and Shortbus because I believe in the idea of them...but the reality doesn't ever live up to the concept. Yes, it's nice to see someone at least *try* to deal with sex -- real, actual sex -- in film. I only wish the story supporting the sex in 9 Songs wasn't so thin and forgettable.

The main problem I had was not caring about the characters. We get no real sense of them -- why do they even like each other? What is the attraction besides being physically nice to look at? Without any sense of that, watching them have sex never rises above the level of spectacle -- it's interesting insofar as there is some novelty in watching people actually have sex without the self-conscious and moronic trappings of standard-issue porn -- but I never felt moved or connected. And that's a pity.

I also wish the concert footage were better shot because there are some excellent bands and good songs featured. Oh well.

3 out of 5 stars What do you call a movie with lots of sex but no plot?.......2007-09-06

9 Songs (2004) is a British film depicting the "love story" of Matt (Kieran O'Brien), a climatologist, and Lisa (Margo Stilley), an American exchange student, told from hindsight as Matt travels to the Antarctic. Matt and Lisa share common interests of sex, drugs, and rock & roll. That is the extent of their connection. Unfortunately, a movie based solely on sex, drugs, and rock & roll does not equate to a meaningful film experience. What the film lacks in plot and meaningful dialogue, it attempts to make up for with sex and more sex, all of which is explicit and unsimulated. Concert footage of the bands performing the following nine songs upstage the film's graphic sex scenes:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "Whatever Happened To My Rock And Roll"
Von Bondies, "C'mon, C'mon""
Elbow, "Fallen Angel"
Primal Scream, "Movin' On Up"
Dandy Warhols, "You Were The Last High"
Super Furry Animals, "Slow Life"
Franz Ferdinand, "Jacqueline"
Michael Nyman, "Nadia"
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "Love Burns"

For a movie that strives to be a "love story," where's the love? Where's the story? You can dismiss me as a film snob, but is it too much to expect a plot in a mainstream movie? For better sex, drugs, and rock & roll mainstream films, check out High Fidelity and Almost Famous. And for erotic cinema with a plot, check out Catherine Breillat.

5 out of 5 stars So I liked the music...and!.......2007-08-28

If you are looking for award winning writing, directing and acting look elsewhere. On the other hand if you enjoy a film with a good modern soundtrack, gratuitous sex and a story that while not deep comes across real life...you'll like this one too.

1 out of 5 stars One damn awful film!.......2007-07-03

Please, dont anyone tell me this is some erotic Romeo and Juliet, dont anyone complain about this film being 'too explicit' this film is bad because.....well it is just plain awful.

Two ugly students, one an American with an accent so anoying that it makes you want to punch her the second an Englishman so boring you wish he would fall down one of those glaciers he is exploring meet up, go to so called 'indie' shows down the Brixton academy, have sex a few times, make a pathetic attempt to take drugs, argue a bit, then brake up. Just about sums up the film.

If this is what anyone realy considers a good plot consider putting a gun to your head and putting yourself out of your misery. So what there are '9 songs' in the film and that is some kind of clever link to the title, so what? If anyone thinks two half starved students engaging in sex is erotic well.....er each to their own I guess.

In this world the director used amature actors, I hear in Road to Guantanimo he did the same. I can only asume that in 9 songs he used the same format because these two planks cant possibly be professional actors. I even watched the extra footage which included an interview with the main actress who is even more anoying in real life than she is when she is making her poor attempt at acting.

Awful film, avoid at all costs. I shudder at the thought of this film as I write this review.

When a mail-order apprentice witch (Angela Lansbury) is saddled with three sibling refugees from London during World War II, the outlook is grim. But the kids soon discover her secret and sign on for adventure in the name of England. With the aid of a magical bed, they track down her fraudulent headmaster (David Tomlinson) to find the spell that will aid the Allies. Fascinated that she has actually achieved results with his lessons, he joins forces. The quintet does battle with corrupt booksellers, animated-lion royalty, and, eventually, invading Germans. Songs include Lansbury's Oscar-nominated "The Age of Not Believing." This film is often compared to director Robert Stevenson's earlier effort, Mary Poppins, and for good reason. In addition to Tomlinson, the movies share a fondness for magic at the hands of a good woman, light romance with an understanding male, and wide-eyed children. Stevenson also graces both films with interaction between humans and animated animals. Disney is wise to play up that aspect on its box this time around as both the underwater ball and the subsequent island soccer match are the most visually interesting and appealing parts of the film. Adults may find the 1971-vintage mixing of actors and animation a bit creaky, but kids used to a variety of animation quality will find the action a hoot. Ages 4 and up. The movie has been recut several times but was restored to the original length of 139 minutes for its 30th anniversary in 2001. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars great movie, TERRIBLE EDITION.......2007-09-11

I watched this movie countless times as a child, and loved it. I was excited to get it on DVD, but now that I have watched it I must say that I am very disappointed in this anniversary edition.

A very few of the extended scenes were useful or interesting, but for the most part redundant and disappointing. They slowed the pacing and diluted the storyline and character development. The editing itself seemed poorly done as well, changing the order of some scenes. All very unneccesary.

Most distressing of all, the sound on most of the added scenes was very poor, lips out of sync, and some of the dialogue appeared to have been dubbed in (badly) by some other, unknown actors! Perhaps this was a result of unusable original recordings, but it was extremely jarring and irksome. Even worse, some of the lines from the original release (often ones that flowed into a "new" scene) were also altered. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable. (Nearly as bad as another old classic, Darby O'Gill and the Little People; the DVD version of that one that I saw appeared to have had ALL of the leprechaun king's lines dubbed over, poorly!)

I wouldn't object to having this version as long as the REAL original was also included on the disc! Why can't they let the classics BE?!? I would MUCH rather have a worn old VHS (though I must admit that *visually* this edition was nicely restored) than be constantly distracted by terrible sound quality and bad editing.

5 out of 5 stars Classic movie!.......2007-09-04

This has always been a favorite and my kids from grade school to college enjoy it as well.

3 out of 5 stars Just never got going.......2007-07-28

I have two little kids now (8 mo's and 3 1/2yrs) and I'm scouring the reviews for good movies to get them that they can watch over and over. The average reviews for this movie rated it a 4 1/2 and the comments were pretty good.

For me the movie was slow, more like a stage performance than a movie. The character development didn't seem to click well with all of the kids and the songs didn't bring you into the movie as well as some of the other Disney movies.

We loved Pete's Dragon and my little girl would keep asking where is Elliot and singing the music. She didn't do that for this movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Disney Films Ever!!!.......2007-07-01

This is one of the best disney films I have ever seen before! Angela Lansbury and the other actors did a excellent job in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I cannot stop watching this movie. It is filled with so much delight and warmth. It's funny and magical.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-05-13

I have seen the original movie release and this is the elongated version. It has scenes in it that ended up being cut for the theaters. I have always enjoyed this movie, but the elongated one is much more enjoyable

The Waltons: The Complete Fifth Season finds the Depression-era, Blue Ridge Mountains family a little more in touch with the outside world, largely because of the aspirations of the growing Walton children. The most dramatic example, over numerous epsiodes, results from the assertiveness of professional journalist John-Boy (Richard Thomas) as he insists on publishing national and international news in the small-circulation Blue Ridge Chronicle he writes, edits, and publishes. A lot of people in the county are mystified as to why John-Boy would want to bring Walton's Mountain closer to epochal events in Germany, or why he would choose to provide coverage of the Hindenburg zeppelin's aerial triumphs despite its link to the Nazis. Yet John-Boy is just as interested in his backyard as the world stage: In season opener "The First Edition," he stands up to strong pressure to kill a story about a judge whose drunk-driving offense causes costly property damage. In "The Fire Storm," locals are appalled when he prints excerpts from Hitler's Mein Kampf in order to make readers aware of what kind of madman the German chancellor is.

While John-Boy stands up to popular opinion, brother Jason (Jon Walmsley), a talented musician, has to take a job playing piano at a roadhouse to make up for the loss of his college scholarship. The decision doesn't go down too well with the Walton women, but Jason's presence at the Dew Drop Inn allows for some interesting scenes over the course of the season, none more so than the unexpected visit of a fire-and-brimstone evangelist in "The Baptism." In that same show, father John Walton, played by Ralph Waite, notorious in his Christian community for eschewing church services, faces renewed pressure from wife Olivia (Michael Learned) to accept her faith, making for one of the most interesting episodes of the season. Meanwhile, John-Boy's sister, Mary Ellen (Judy Norton), is wooed by a couple of different men and hears wedding bells with one of them. She also pursues her nursing degree and misdiagnoses an ailment of Grandma Esther (Ellen Corby), resulting in long-term hospitalization and no end of grief for Grandpa Zeb (Will Geer). The other, increasingly restless Walton boys and girls grab their share of the spotlight, too, but The Complete Fifth Season is, once again, John-Boy's year, capped by dramatic developments in his career and vision of himself. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Waltons - The Complete Fifth Season.......2007-08-17

Season 5 is as good as the previous 4. If you loved The Waltons when you were younger then you will really love them now. This series evokes feelings and yearnings of times gone by.
Times that were slower yet seemingly more full and rich.
This series will make you feel 'good' and watching an episode or two is the perfect ending to a busy day in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars The Waltons-Season 5.......2007-08-10

I love the Walton series, I have bought all 5 seasons, and would buy another when it comes out. It is a good family series, and has good morals, and enjoyed this more than any that I have bought. It is a good buy and is well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Good family viewing for the teenage years.......2007-08-07

We have enjoyed the Walton series as our children enter the teen years. Close family ties and loyalty are major themes. Topics for discussion are the Baldwin sisters' "recipe" and the father's lack of religion.

5 out of 5 stars Great family entertainment.......2007-08-05

We really enjoyed the Walton's series. I have them all. Nice clean entertainment for the whole family and good story line. I highly recommend them.

4 out of 5 stars The Waltons Are Timeless.......2007-08-03

As a child, one of the highlights of my week was to watch the Waltons. My mother is German, and as a result, we spent many years (off and on) overseas, and I missed most years of the show. In later years the show was shown in Germany, and became one of my grandmother's favorite shows (who happens to be a very proper Prussian Lady).

It has been my great pleasure to be able to watch the show in its entirety now. The first four seasons I watched almost back-to-back, and it took me only a few weeks. This fifth season is also very enjoyable, but I find some of the innocence and uniqueness of the program changing. For one thing, now we have a teaser before the show starts, which I am sure is a result of the changing times on television itself. Somehow it detracts from the show, because you have already glimpsed some key scenes. The loss of innocence is probably in large part due to the children growing up. Somehow the pace of the show is faster, and more facets to the plot are tried to be squeezed in.

All that being said, this show is worth every penny, and for me is still a solid four stars. I look forward to watching the remaining episodes.

Year two of Earl Hamner's The Waltons still finds the original cast complete and the show humming along nicely on nostalgia for an earlier America, specifically the Depression-era 1930s, a time of sacrifice and family unity as The Waltons portrays it. The characters we came to know so well in season one (see The Waltons: The Complete First Season) continue to live in a spirit of cooperation and generosity, and with hope that a younger generation of Waltons will prosper and dream new dreams for everyone.

The 24 episodes included in this box set feature a number of very strong stories, including a handful of classics, all immersed in the series' typically old-Hollywood production values. (Several season two shows were directed by Waltons' star Ralph Waite.) Among the best is the premiere, "The Journey," in which the ever-noble, college-bound John-Boy (Richard Thomas) passes on a school dance and an important date to take an aging neighbor, Maggie Mackenzie (Linda Watkins), on a special, final journey. "The Separation" finds Grandpa (Will Geer) and Grandma (Ellen Corby) Walton feuding—even living apart--after the former crafts a secret plan to raise money to pay the family's electricity bill. (Their reconciliation is one of the series' most enjoyable and tender moments.) The memorable "The Thanksgiving Story" is a nail-biter in which John-Boy, facing a hopeful future as he awaits college and a visit from his girlfriend, endures a head injury in the family mill and must undergo surgery. Finally, "The Honeymoon" sees John (Waite) and Olivia (Michael Learned) finally taking their honeymoon after 19 years of marriage and seven kids. Throughout all the major storylines is a constant buzz of subplots concerning John-Boy's younger siblings—their joys and disappointments, first loves, accomplishments and relationships with one another. The Waltons never slows down, but it is capable of revealing the most delicate of feelings within shared or private moments. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Waltons Second Season.......2007-09-09

I loved the Complete Second Season of the Waltons! I'm already
watching it for the second time. The product is great and very
reasonably priced--so glad it is available.

3 out of 5 stars Family Stories.......2007-07-30

This is a classic series of family life in the 1930's. Wonderful stories the whole family can watch. The actors play there characters with so much enthusiasm so it wraps you into their lives in the depression era.

4 out of 5 stars LACK OF BONUS MATERIAL KEEPS ME FROM RATING THIS GREAT SHOW 5 STARS.......2007-03-13

1 out of 5 stars No English Subtitles, FRENCH ONLY! DUH!! .......2007-02-04

In what must have been a production error? or just flat idiots that run the show making dvds, ( seems to be common on way to many dvd's )

the subtitles are in French only. There are no English subtitles.

Obviously someone at Warners Home Video has made a bad mistake in production. This makes it difficult for any elderly viewers or hard of hearing that might want to watch this show. ( um hey, guess what, they have money to spend, too! ) Are you HEARING that?

Subtitles are supposed to be standard on all DVD box sets and I note that overseas versions of The Waltons have corrected this mistake(just not the American version).

This is getting to be old hat by now. I have some dvd's that are 10 years old that are CC. just flat lazy and ignorant decisions.

The Deaf and hard of hearing are the last "group" in the USA to still be looking for they're rights. Everyone else has recieved them in the last 50 years. How long is this going to go on??

Socialist France gets to watch and understand the great show, but not those in our own country. amazing

No Good Night John Boy in this house.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2007-01-15

I grew up watching the Waltons. After the second season, they became like good friends I enjoyed being with week after week. Though I always found Richard Thomas (John-Boy) a bit "actor-ish" in his role, the series always hung on the excellent performances of Ralph Waite and Miss Michael Learned, (Did she ever get married, I wonder?) as well as the rest of the excellent cast.

The strength of the show is the great writing and the excellent relationships the characters had with each other. Things rarely got bored, tedious, or drawn-out, even though the material covered a lot of topics. Things always seemed very interesting around Walton's mountain.

I really identified with the people on this show. They were wholesome and believable in an entirely different way than on shows like Father Knows Best. Because the episodes are set in the 30's and 40's, they never go out of style. I guarantee you'll enjoy watching them every bit as much today as when they were first produced over 30 years ago, (and that's hard to believe.)

The Waltons' nearly 10-year run on network television grew out of the popular, 1971 made-for-TV movie The Homecoming, which was derived from a Depression-era, rustic setting ("Walton's Mountain"), and characters based on Earl Hamner Jr.'s autobiographical novel Spencer's Mountain--itself the source for a very nice 1963 feature film starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. That's a lot of entertainment sprouting from Hamner's prose. But something about his seminal story of family values, rugged independence, and big dreams amidst a hardscrabble existence captured the hearts of American audiences, many of whom personally recalled severe economic adversity in the 1930s.

The Waltons: The Complete First Season collects those initial episodes from the series building on the strengths of the Homecoming pilot, which introduced the extended Walton clan led by a strong-willed mill owner, John (Andrew Duggan), and his equally resolute wife, Olivia (Patricia Neal). The Waltons recast those key roles (as well as a few others) with Ralph Waite and Michael Learned (yup, a female), but Richard Thomas carried over as oldest child John-Boy Walton, an aspiring writer whose cusp-of-manhood view informs the series. Will Geer (Seconds) replaced Edgar Bergen as Grandpa Walton, Ellen Corby remained as Grandma, and John and Olivia's large brood (seven kids in all) were filled out by largely unknown, young actors. The episodes, still delightful and touching, strong on production values and unusually tight and polished for primetime drama, tended to focus on creator Hamner's pet themes of self-sacrifice and heroic effort when the going got tough.

Year 1 highlights include "The Carnival," in which the impoverished Waltons, who can't pay for tickets to see a circus performance, end up sheltering stranded carney folk. "The Typewriter" is a classic about John-Boy "borrowing" a museum's antique typewriter, only to have his sister Mary Ellen (Judy Norton) sell it as junk. "The Sinner" concerns the arrival of a fundamentalist minister on Walton's Mountain, finding comfort in the words of religious iconoclast John Walton after the clergyman makes a fool of himself with moonshine. That's Hamner himself providing touches of narration. During the long run of the multiple-award-winning The Waltons, there were many changes in casting and storylines. But this boxed set reveals a fine series in its pristine state. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Back to Simple.......2007-09-04

Watched the Waltons growing up. I am loving reliving the simple life "on the mountain". Was good then and great now. We are so far removed from that kind of life, it's just nice to escape to a program that portrays love of family, respect for the elderly, and solid morals.

5 out of 5 stars Morality Plays.......2007-08-01

Unless you get the family channel what seems to be missing from broadcast television these days,'Extreme Home Makeover' excepted is programming that teaches you how to be a better human being. These Walton episodes from the early 70's do just that. There are a few twilight scenes in the earliest episodes that are quite dark but other than that there ain't much to complain about in this 5 front and back dvd collection. John Ritter has an excellent guest appearance as a rookie fire and brimstone preacher who gets a huge dose of the Baldwin sisters' 'recipe' which later translates to a huge dose of humility. Miss Micheal Learned's Liv Walton comes down with polio in the 2 hour season finale which showcases some truly fine acting . Sissy Spacek gets a nice guest starring role as an unruly country vixen trying to get John Boy to become anti-John Boy. It doesn't work ! I would recommend this season whole heartedly to anyone. We all need a daily dose of the Waltons to make this world tolerable.

4 out of 5 stars A classic tv series.......2007-07-31

Yes watched this series in the 1970's always enjoyed it.Now I am hooked watching family life in the 1930's depression era. Great for the whole family young or old to watch. Shame they don't make this type of TV dramas these days.

5 out of 5 stars Great, wholesome, no-nonsense entertainment, recommended for inspiration!.......2007-07-11

This was one of the shows we watched on Thursdays every week, in addition to Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and Carol Burnett shows on Saturday nights. I'll be honest, though. Being hard of hearing myself which meant I couldn't easily understand the dialogues involved, I didn't really care much for this one. I could see well, though, so the better whatever looked, the better I'd like whatever it is. Thus, this show didn't quite win me over, at least not yet. However, as I got older I'd get used to it, to the point I'd enjoy it somewhat. Little House on the Pairie, apparently NBC's answer to this show, did win me over right away as the scenes involving the kids looked more colorful and interesting. Anyway, not too long ago I'd note that TW seemed somewhat dull, but I know that's not the point. The point of this series is to inspire, and it's better found in the lessons imparted by characters relevant to the episode than whatever meets the eye. I'm glad to say this season is closed captioned, so those needing English assistance can benefit from it greatly. Heart-warming, more no-nonsense than ornate-looking, if you love Little House on the Prairie, then do pick up this set. I'm gonna watch the remaining seasons when they come out.

When a Great Dane puppy is raised with a litter of Dachshunds, it naturally thinks it's a Dachshund too--even when it grows to 10 times the size. Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette star as the hapless couple who took in the galumphing dog, which wreaks havoc on their house and home. The Ugly Dachshund is mostly a series of spectacular disasters (the doggy demolition of Jones's art studio will delight kids and reduce adults to nervous wrecks), but it's held together by the convincing domestic banter of Jones and Pleshette (who was quite a dish in 1965); the pair went on to star in a couple of other Disney live-action flicks, Bluebeard's Ghost and The Shaggy D.A.. Despite some racial and gender stereotypes, it's a good-natured and amusing movie in the Disney mold. Also featuring classic character actor Charlie Ruggles (Bringing Up Baby, The Parent Trap). --Bret Fetzer

Description

There's magic in the memories as great Disney moments are captured right here for you and your family to enjoy. You don't have to own a pet to enjoy this story of a happy suburban household gone to the dogs! The Garrisons (Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette) are the "proud parents" of three adorable dachshund pups -- and one overgrown Great Dane named Brutus, who nevertheless thinks of himself as a dainty dachsie. His identity crisis results in an uproarious series of household crises that reduce the Garrisons' house to shambles -- and viewers to howls of laughter!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie!!.......2007-07-08

This is a great, classic, Disney film. Every time I watch it it makes me laugh, without having to filter for bad language, inappropriate content, violence, or any number of other things all movies seem to have these days. I am not sure that it classifies as an example of critically acclaimed cinema of our times, but I highly recommend it all the same!

5 out of 5 stars Such a cute movie!.......2007-07-05

Dean Jones makes the best Disney movies. His character always ends up in some kind of competition with a female. He always loses! ;P His wife has these annoying puppies so Jones gets himself a great dane in which all heck breaks lose and brings the comedy full of laughter. You will have to watch to see how it ends!

A sleeper at the time of its release in 1984, Thom Eberhardt's Night of the Comet has built a small cadre of fans thanks to its breezy performances and blend of comedy and tongue-in-cheek science fiction. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are thoroughly likable as a pair of San Fernando Valley sisters who find themselves completely alone after the arrival of Halley's Comet reduces their affluent community--and most of Los Angeles--to dust. Their subsequent nonstop shopping spree is soon interrupted by predatory zombies, as well as a sinister scientific cabal (led by cult favorites Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis) with designs on the girls. Stewart and Maroney are terrifically game as the heroines (especially Maroney, whose flair for bubbly comedy was never given another chance on screen), and Robert (Star Trek: Voyager) Beltran is also on hand as a fellow survivor and romantic lead. Fun for '80s enthusiasts and sci-fi fiends who don't mind a little fizz in their end-of-the-world scenarios. -- Paul Gaita

If you want a scarry movie then forget it, for starters is a zombie movie where are less than 10 in all the film. The plot is really weak and you never be sacared.
The good thing...well, if you are fan of Catherine Mary Stewart or the 80`s you will enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO POLISHING A TURD???..........2007-08-24

Don't get me wrong. I looooooooove 'Night of the Comet'. It's one of my favorite B movies of all time, but where are the EXTRAS and at least...at the very, very, ve-rrrry least, give me a decent DVD cover. This one sucks. This type of production is bullcr#p; especially after all of the time I have waited for this!!!

Take for instance `Aqua Teen Colon Movie', that movie bites so hard and yet, it has a massively cool cover and it's TWO discs!!! I don't even have the season sets of Aqua Teen and I'm tempted to buy this movie just so I can see the DVD in my grubby hands. I am so very TIRED of this junk. If you're going to invest the money to bring these cult gems to the marketplace, please, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee, pleaseeeeeeee think about adding some kind of "cool factor" to it so I can at least feel good about buying it. Otherwise, keep the freakin' movie in obscurity where it freakin' belongs!!! You idiots!

And one more thing...leave your stupid freakin' distributor logo on the spine of the DVD art where it f'n belongs. Nobody wants to see that crud on every one of the DVD's in their collection. You guys are so stupid and you would think that being in business as long as you have, you'd know something about marketing to a specific demographic by now. At least you didn't slap some idiotic `special unrated extra comety edition' on the cover and a review by some obscure website praising the films nostalgic flavor or the usual garbage. GOD! I hate huge companies that have no respect for marketing. I mean, you could sell a million really really bad movies with just the minimalist of efforts towards your products packaging. You losers!

Anyway, the two stars are for the movie actually being released on DVD after a gazillion years and the negative three stars is for your half baked attempt at packaging this so that it would sell. Which, is to say, there was no attempt at all on your part to entice me therefore, I will ignore this as if it doesn't exist until a company like Anchor Bay can buy the rights and produce something worthy of purchase.

I loved this movie when it came out and i loved seeing it again. FUN FUN FUN what more could you want in a sifi movie. Beautiful girls, the Living dead, and the world as your playground.

3 out of 5 stars Shopping Mall of the Apocalypse.......2007-08-11

This movie defies easy description. It mixes a valley girl comedy with a touch of THE OMEGA MAN. Mass population depletion, zombies, mad scientists, and video games; it's all here.

I first saw the movie when it came out in the theater. While I acknowledge that it is cheesy camp, it is fun cheesy camp! As soon as I heard that it was coming out on DVD, I couldn't wait to find a copy. While I am only rating it with three stars, I was tempted to go for four just because of the good memories I had from the film.

Catherine Mary Stewart, who we have seen in other 80s films like THE LAST STARFIGHTER and WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S, is lovely as always. Kelli Maroney plays her sexy younger sister. A young Robert Beltran (STAR TREK VOYAGER'S Chakotay) makes a good early appearance as a trucker who links up with the gun-toting teens.

To be honest, it would probably be a good idea to rent this film first; it isn't going to be everybody's cup of tea. For those who like it though, this is a definite nostalgic buy!

4 out of 5 stars Good ol' 80's fun.......2007-08-04

I watched this movie the first time as a kid. Watching it now I realize how much i've missed it. It may not have been the best 80's movie, but it was fun and it really was what got me first interested in sci-fi. I am happy it is on dvd, and would highly recommend it to anyone.
