The success of Grumpy Old Men made this 1995 sequel practically mandatory, and although it's not much more than a Grumpy retread, the same schtick is just as funny the second time around. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau reunited as the Minnesota neighbors who make a hobby out of mutual aggravation, but while Lemmon's married (to Ann-Margret), this time it's Matthau who's looking for love. He finds it when Sophia Loren arrives to open an Italian ristorante on the site of Jack and Walter's favorite bait shop, but only after the grumpy guys have done their best to stop the ristorante from opening. The impending wedding of Kevin Pollak (as Matthau's son) and Daryl Hannah (as Lemmon's daughter) puts love in the air, so it's not too long before Matthau and Loren are singing "That's Amore." I just loved the first movie and the sequel was just as good or better. Such chemistry between the actors!

Still grumpy, still funny!.......2006-09-27

I was so happy with the first film that I just had to see the sequel and let me just say that it was bigger and better the second time around. I feel that Matthau and Lemmon were just dynamic together in just about everything they did, and this film proved to be one of their finest moments. Jack Lemmon reprises his role as John, as Matthau reprises his role as Max, and the two of them are still fighting day in and day out. John is now married to Ariel (Ann-Margret) and he and Max are busy planning the wedding of their kids (Johns daughter Melanie played by Daryl Hannah is marrying Max's son Jacob played by Kevin Pollak). The film real though focuses on the relationship building between Max and Maria (Sophia Loren), the new owner of the bait and tackle store they frequently visit. When Maria declares she's turning the bait store into a restaurant Max and John hatch plenty of schemes to prevent that from happening. In the process though, Max falls head over heals for her instead. The film is hilarious and serves as a welcome addition to the Matthau/Lemmon collection, and thanks to Burgess Meredith who plays Johns father we are given some of the funniest (if not dirtiest) one-liners I've ever heard. Make sure you keep it running after the movie for the bloopers...Meredith steals them with pure comedic genius.

It has the late Walter Mattheu,The Late Burgess Merideth[Penguin] from Batman Tv show and the late Jack Lemmon,I don't know if Ann Margret and Sophia Loren are dead they probably are. It is a funny movie. Jack and Walter have been in Out ot Sea,Grumpy Old Men,Grumpier old Men,and the dvd I want Odd Couple 1 and 2. I would love to have both sets of Grumpy old men on DVD. I saw this at my fiancee's house Sunday evening.

Lemmon & Matthau's Last Film Teaming.......2005-12-28

Grumpier Old Men resumes the battle where Grumpy Old Men left off. John and Ariel (Jack Lemmon and Ann-Margret) are still married. Max (Walter Matthau) still lives next door. Grandpa (Burgess Meredith) is still as feisty as ever.

The owner of the guys favorite bait shop dies. His family decides to sell it. The new owner is Maria (Sophia Loren) and her Mama (Anne Guilbert from the Dick Van Dyke Show and The Nanny.)

Maria has decided to open an Italian restaurant. This infuriates the guys. They try everything to either close her down or change her mind. But after a while, Max starts to fancy Maria. He becomes relentless in his pursuit.

Love also blooms on another front, Grandpa and Mama find they are not too old to enjoy another person. And the kids (Darryl Hannah and Kevin Pollack) plan their wedding.

In the end, all works out.

This once again shows the magic of Lemmon and Matthau. This would be their last film together. And the rest of the cast is luminous. Burgess Meridith almost steals the show with his adlibs. Watch the outtakes at the end of the film.

Feel Good Movie.......2005-08-10

Grumpier Old Men has become something of a classic in our household. It gives some insight into the life and dreams of older people, and into the depths of relationships developed over the years. Those relationships that challenge us can have the deepest rewards.

We were very satisfied with this purchase. It arrived on time. and in perfect condition.

I must respond to the negative comments concerning the DVD format...Are we really going to condemn 2 fine films just because they're not available in widescreen?? The back clearly states "in fullscreen", so we can't claim we were "duped". Plus, I checked my old separate collections of each film, and they were also in fullscreen--nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Just kick back and enjoy the work of 2 masterful actors who have since left us; the lovely/saucy presence of Ann-Margret (and later, Sophia Loren); plus, the scene-stealing "dirty old man" Burgess Meredith.
However, it would've been nice to have a "making of.." featurette or cast & crew interviews.

The seniors among us usually don't just sit in rocking chairs watching the tube. Their inner youth is still playful, although their bodies (and often their families) can be less than cooperative. Great movie to open the door for discussion in family topics' classes.

Love these Movies... But I Sent Them Back.......2007-01-04

I simply will not buy any DVD that is not in the format released in theaters. This product stated in the discription that it was in widescreen format. I read the back of the packages before opening and discovered they were FULL SCREEN, not Widescreen. I sent the movies back and will re-order as soon as they become availble in widescreen. There are several other movies I'm also waiting for in Widescreen: Annie, Guarding Tess and others.

I noticed a lot of angry reviews for this new dvd release because the films aren't in widescreen, and I can't say that I blame them. I bought these films on VHS years ago but didn't buy the first dvd releases of them because they weren't in, you guessed it, widescreen. I can see how really big fans of them would be upset by that. It does seem funny to me because in the past Warner Bros. has rereleased films like "A Christmas Story" and "Ace Ventura:Pet Detective" in widescreen, the latter just last week. This rerelease of the "Grumpy" films looks to me like the original dvd releases put on one disk, as the menus and special features seem to indicate so. But the back of the case clearly says fullscreen, so you can't try to sue Warners or anything like that. But one does have to wonder why, if they were going to rerelease them, they wouldn't make new menus, and release them in WIDESCREEN.

Ya, it said widescreen on the product details, so I thought,
FINALLY, I can get rid of my letter boxed lazer disc versions of these two movies...Boy did I get a wrong number.Amazon's
product details are wrong.These two features are full screen!
NOT wide screen.I called Amazon's customer service(800-201-7575)
and they were happy to refund my money,as soon as I returned
the disc.Oh, by the way,at Warner home video this disc is listed
as FULL SCREEN(as of 8/30/06).I'm still waiting for the widescreen version.

Still waiting for WIDESCREEN version.......2006-02-13

Comon' Warner Home Video. Get out of the 1980s mentality of producing video products for VHS players and 19" TVs and get into the age of DVD and large TVs. There is a huge queue of your customer's who are waiting to buy this movie in its original unmodified format.

Incidently, Warner Home Video also released the classic "Arthur" in full screen format only.

Jack & Ann & Walter & Sophia.......2005-12-29

This is a great pair of films. Jack & Walter made twelve films together. Grumpy Old Men was one of their best. Grumpier was not. But you should own both films as they make a nice set.

John and Max have been neighbors for years and enemies almost as long. They have a passion in common, fishing. In the first ice fishing and the second fresh water.

The first concerns the men competing for the attentions a sexy new neighbor (Ann-Margret). The second concerns a woman (Sophia Loren) who is converting the boys bait shop into an italian restaurant.

Both films have more and you should look at the individual film titles for more details. But if you like good comedy and Jack & Walter, then you should buy this pack.

The only negative for these DVD's are they are full frame and not widescreen. But these are not spectacle films so you really are not missing much. But I do wish they would have widescreen available.

This is a great film. I have both films on lazer disc in wide screen.

Grumpy Old Men series were awesome.......2004-02-19

Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau were awesome to watch over & over. Just wish they would have made more movies like the Grumpy Old Men series & the Odd Couple I & II. These movies you can watch over & over again. They still make you laugh over & over & over. It even means more now that both of them have past away. The world has lost 2 wonderful actors. I would highly recommend these to anyone who likes comedies & needs to laugh-very funny. Out to Sea was another good movie. These movies should be a part of your movie collection. You never get tired of watching these movies. They are a part of my collection & are worth it.
It is good to laugh after a long day. I would give it 10 stars if it was possible.

Make it a movie night & pop some popcorn-kick back, relax & get ready for a fun night.

Great films - expensive customs.......2003-12-30

Amazon was the only place I found those films. Amazon sent the films to Sweden with a decleration upon package total cost 37$. I had to pay about 10$ extra for customs fees (customs even charged postal fees!!!). I shall never more order films from the US. (Unless I can find a ways to go round customs). Amazon was great and quick delivery - Swedish customs fees for private import SUCKS.

This is a cute movie and holds your attention. Speaking about attention, I'm not saying that Julie Warner is like Hedy Lamar; but they both where the same suit when they come out of the water (birthday.) And George Hamilton plays a similar character as he does in "8 Heads in a Duffel Bag" (1997). I am glad it is not one of those letterbox (have to look at the black lines) pictures. They are ok but distracting when not necessary.

Dr. Benjamin Stone is on his way to try out for a new job as a high paid plastic surgeon. Due to impedance in the road, he is forced to detour through a local fence. The fence just happened to be owned by the judge. When the judge finds out that Ben Stone is a doctor, he requires Ben to pay with community service and the story snowballs from there.
Will Ben stay in the one pig town or will he finally move on to the big city?
This is a cute movie with many twists and turns.

My Fellow Americans

The story covers several years and three presidencies. First Lemmon, then Garner and now Aykroid. Vice President Ted Matthews (John Heard) is a dunce. Turns out rumors of a scandal are surfacing and the now president is having thoughts of pining the scandal on Lemmon who was president at the time. Joe Hollis (Wilford Brimley) the head of the opposition party wants to pin it on the present administration. Col. Paul Tanner will protect the secret at any cost. There are many more players, too numerous to mention. Seems that someone has determined that Lemmon and Garner are best dispatched. Will this happen? Can they clear their names? And not just who is behind the plot, but what is the plot? Watch out for Blinky.
This movie has a sound mystery base to get us through the twists and turns with lots of "who's behind it" moments. However the interaction between Garner and Lemmon is so much fun that sometimes we forget the plot.
