5 out of 5 stars Awesome Film Deserving its Cult Status.......2007-09-12

This is one of those truly fun movies that you can watch over and over again.
Those that compare it to pulp fiction don't realize that there are not that many similarities between the two films. The greatness of this film is in
1. The chemistry between the fraternal twin brothers Murphy and Connor. The interaction between the two make up, in my humble opinion, the best, funniest, wittiest and emotionally wrought scenes in the film.
2. The out of stereotype characters that make up the other key players. *there are some stereotypical characters in this film, however, all movies have them, but they are funny and needed * Detective Smecker and Rocco are two original, well acted and interesting guys that add greatly to the film.
3. The fact that the movie doesn't take itself too seriously. You are supposed to laugh, suspend belief and have fun while watching this. You are also going to cringe at the shootouts and get excited during the action scenes which are pretty damn cool.

Most reviewers for this film are guys, but I'm not, and I was tipped off to see this by a girl friend of mine. I immediately went out and got my own copy. I've watched it about 5 times, and keep finding more I like about it every time I watch it again.

Ignore the reviews that say it's a ripoff of Pulp Fiction and just try it for yourself. Personally, I can't wait for the sequel.

Bring on All Saints Day

1 out of 5 stars Mindless, unrealistic violence, unconvincing characters, and an amateurish script.......2007-09-09

Where to begin...

1. The characters are unconvincing, uninteresting, and overused movie stereotypes.
2. The plot barely makes any sense. There is virtually no character development which convincingly explains why two people would go on a killing spree.
3. The story seems to have come from the mind of a pre-pubescent video gamer.
4. A pretentious overtone.

I cant even continue writing this, the entire movie sucked so bad that its too hard to even describe. Watching this was like having 5 other mediocre shoot em ups chewed up and spat out onto a DVD. There is a reason this movie got 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest cult films ever........2007-08-13

I love this movie, each time I watch it, it feels like it's better, kind of like Pulp Fiction. I can't wait for the sequel to come out.

5 out of 5 stars Solid action flick, William Defoe perfectly cast, and interesting original story line.......2007-08-05

I caught the very begining of this on TV one afternoon, unfortunatly had to leave in the first 10 minutes. But, seeing William Defoe in it sparked me to rent it, and now own it. Facinating story about two highly intelligent underachieving men in Boston who decide to take justice into their own hands. William Defoe plays the FBI detective following their trail. All I can say is you have to see this one, the casting is great, and the story is original. Great action and fight scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-15

With how many things are just wrong in this world, this movie makes it all better. The cast is amazing and the script is beautifully written! If you like action, drama, and justice- this is the movie for you.

If you all guys not happy with the quality of the product. Solution is very easy, you can go to a retail store and buy US version for $400 or more. you should know before buying for that price , what you gonna get.!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent set.......2007-08-09

I think they must have updated the dvds since these other reviews, the picture quality is excellent! I'm very please, bargain compared to getting the official US release

1 out of 5 stars Ok if you don't mind.......2007-07-12

The packing was ok. We were looking and they seen like they are a bootleg copy. The DVD's were not in the regular packing. There was no chapter lists. Nothing inside. The sixth season had subtitles and there is no way to get them off. Also that season had a lot of chinese writing on the box. You can still watch the show. If you do not mind a knock off, then this is the buy for you.

1 out of 5 stars Don't but it. Don't buy it. Don't buy it........2007-07-08

Previous reviews of this set are valid. Some of the discs are unreadable. Extremely displeased.

2 out of 5 stars Bootleg DVDs.......2007-06-22

These are clearly bootlegg copies. They say "region free" I checked and HBO has only made Soprano's DVD for Region 1. Also, HBO states they have never issued the box set of all DVD in one box. They are good buy if your not too worried about quality. But don't pay anymore than $100 for the set, they usually only cost $25 - $50. There are some buyers selling them for around $90.

Arguably the best film by Joel and Ethan Coen, the 1990 Miller's Crossing stars Gabriel Byrne as Tom, a loyal lieutenant of a crime boss named Leo (Albert Finney) who is in a Prohibition-era turf war with his major rival, Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito). A man of principle, Tom nevertheless is romantically involved with Leo's lover (Marcia Gay Harden), whose screwy brother (John Turturro) escapes a hit ordered by Caspar only to become Tom's problem. Making matters worse, Tom has outstanding gambling debts he can't pay, which keeps him in regular touch with a punishing enforcer. With all the energy the Coens put into their films, and all their focused appreciation of genre conventions and rules, and all their efforts to turn their movies into ironic appreciations of archetypes in American fiction, they never got their formula so right as with Miller's Crossing. With its Hammett-like dialogue and Byzantine plot and moral chaos mitigated by one hero's personal code, the film so transcends its self-scrutiny as a retro-crime thriller that it is a deserved classic in its own right. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The haunting sound track , and the hats.......2007-09-03

This is one of my favorite movies, not least because of the haunting score that plays during the opening credits and recurs throughout. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this.

The movie was filmed in New Orleans--I was there during its filming, and streets were constantly being blocked off--but I'd say it's intended to be New York or Boston. Note the Irish tenor of the gangs and the police chief.

I don't know what the symbolism of the hats is. Does anyone?

5 out of 5 stars The Grifter & the Rumpus.......2007-07-29

Or the Rugs and the Hats. Finney wears both. At a lower level: the Gorilla meets Lars Thorvald. Hard-boiled is what they call these fictions. How come the simulacrum is better than the originals? Like the best cowboy song is: Don't Fence Me In (Cole Porter pastiche), and the best song out of the Mexican Revolution is: Fernando (ABBA pastiche). This is better than any other gangster movie: it distils the essence of the genre. It fuels Tarantino and The Usual Suspects, mixed with wry twists and rye. Although I haven't read The Glass Key, I've read all Chandler; and the Byrne man is pure Chandler, on the other side of the tracks. He takes a lot of punishment, he feels like a sawn-off leg, he cools it with bootleg, he has a way with a semi-soiled maid, and a weakness for the ponies. Runyonesque. He's not sure where he's going, but he can figure. He's never cross, but he's crossing over. Like the private eye, he's not mean, and he's melancholy, but he's not soft-boiled. Hell, the grifter had it coming. You don't double-cross a man who saves your life. And you can't go with a man who rubs out your brother. Personal relationships are ambiguous. Why are so many of these guys gunsels?

5 out of 5 stars Miller's Crossing.......2007-07-13

A sharp, innovative send-up of everything from "The Public Enemy" to "The Godfather," Joel and Ethan Coen's brilliant "Crossing" has enough surprising twists, gnarled plotlines, and double crosses to fill several noir movies. Byrne is excellent as Tom, a loyal, boozing mobster whose inveterate gambling and torrid affair with the boss's girl (Harden, in her debut), eventually land him in hot water with Finney's Leo. Coens fave Turturro also has a brilliant turn as the weaselly Bernie. Evocative, clever, and beautifully played, "Crossing" is an under-rated homage to the gangster movies perfected by Warners in the 1930s.

5 out of 5 stars cohen bros EPIC gangster flick "millers crossing".......2007-06-27

i looked everywhere for this movie retail and amazon was the only one who didn't let me down. millers crossing is everything you need in a gangster movie. plenty of characters you love to hate (caspar, the DANE, the Shmatte) and characters you hate to love (verna, leo, and of course the rogueish Tom). this movie has firepower and surreality. the cohen bros. redefine the genre with a emotional tale of love, betrayal, loyalty and brutality and of course "ETHICS". BUY IT, WATCH IT AND WATCH IT AGAIN.

1 out of 5 stars bored me to death.......2007-06-01

there's nothing i could say to this boring gangster movie, so cliched and deadbeat, lotsa blah, blah this and blah, blah that from several mouth-tough guys. the storyline couldn't be more boring. guys who played tough guys didn't bring out any credible toughness in this film, didn't know what those guys yammering about, didn't seem to be too big deal important and interesting. after tried 45 minutes with mucho yawns, still failed to get connected, so i ejected the dvd, cursed all the way to the video store and returned it. well, same as usual for a boring rental, lost money, time and gas again.

Based on a memoir by former undercover cop Joe Pistone (whose daring and unprecedented infiltration of the New York Mob scene earned him a place in the federal witness protection program), Donnie Brasco is like a de- romanticized, de-mythologized version of The Godfather. It offers an uncommonly detailed, privileged glimpse inside the world of organized crime from the perspective of the little guys at the bottom of Mafia hierarchy rather than from the kingpins at the top. Donnie Brasco is not only one of the great modern-day gangster movies to put in the company of The Godfather films andGoodFellas, but it is also one of the great undercover police movies--arguably surpassing Serpico and Prince of the City in richness of character, detail, and moral complexity. Donnie (Johnny Depp, a splendid actor) is practically adopted by Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), a gregarious, low-level "made" man who grows to love his young protégé like a son. (Pacino really sinks into this guy's skin and polyester slacks, and creates his freshest, most fully realized character since his 1970s heyday.) As Donnie acclimates himself to Lefty's world, he distances himself from his wife (a terrific Anne Heche) and family for their own protection. Almost imperceptibly his sense of identity slips away from him. Questioning his own confused loyalties, unable to trust anybody else because he himself is an imposter, Donnie loses his way in a murky and treacherous no-man's land. The film is directed by Mike Newell, who also headed up Four Weddings and a Funeral and the gritty, true crime melodrama Dance with a Stranger. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Pacino Fan.......2007-08-26

Agent Joseph Pistone infilatrated the mafia as Donnie Brasco an alleged jewel thief. Depp plays Brasco in the movie and Pacino plays Lefty Ruggerio a made guy who is Brasco's mentor. Pistone later left the FBI but nothing takes away what he did undercover. Pacino is excellent in this movie. Great movie.

5 out of 5 stars the mafia, from the grotty, nickle and dime perspective.......2007-08-21

This is one of the great realist mafia films: you see guys in stalled "careers" making bad decisions and desperate to score in order to placate greedy bosses. Their world is dangerous and empty, utterly lacking in trust and glamour. Enter Donnie, who exploits a mark's frustrations and some of the good side of his character, an older man who is willing to mentor him in the ways of the wise guys. While you catch glimpses of the bosses, who exude an arrogant malevolence, it is all about their bag boys, the "spokes on the wheel." There is nothing romantic about their world.

The acting in this film is truly superb, in particular the chemistry between Pacino and Depp. Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-08-10

no problems with this DVD; this is a very good movie and I like the extra materia; in fact anything they still have and didn't add to the movie will make it better because it's so good

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Brasco.......2007-07-29

It's a superb movie -- one of the best depicting the true picture and psyche of the mafia. Johnny Depp is oustanding and Al Pacino gives one of his best performances ever in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Inside the Mob.......2007-07-22

The depth of feeling, the subtlety of expression in the acting of Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, and Anne Heche--and many others--in this extraordinary film has no equal in any other film about organized crime that I know of. While other gangster films--even some of the best--seem to worship violence, romanticize thuggery, and idealize both good and evil, this one tells the story of real, complex people struggling with their real, complicated lives. The fact that those lives do not resemble ours very much at all makes the film fascinating, but not foreign or artificial in any way. It may be that Donnie Brasco is less well-known than it should be because it bursts the bounds of its genre.

Trying to explain the wildly accelerated plot of this non-stop action thriller would be like convincing Quentin Tarantino to retell the saga of The Sopranos in 15-minutes or less. Don't misunderstand, Running Scared wastes little time on the nuanced details that make the violent, narratively precise, and intricately characterized world of The Sopranos so stylish and compelling. But boy, does it have style to spare, not to mention plenty of violence, narrative, and a cast of characters that all engage in a heady battle for your attention. Paul Walker has the unenviable task of fleshing out the role of a low-level mob flunky who's assigned to get rid of a gun that was involved in a bloody drug deal gone bad. When he botches even that little job, it's not just his wife who gets mad at him. Creepily threatened kids, put-upon women who save the day, and an array of pimps, hookers, sleazy gangsters and dirty cops straight ouuta central casting are all part of the intricate jumble of the story (not to mention bullet-time close-ups and a nifty scene that imparts the inherent danger of hockey pucks in a whole new light). It's hard to believe this outlandish piece of ultraviolence came from writer/director Wayne Kramer, the same creative mind that gave us the smooth little caper flick The Cooler. Don't think about that too hard though. Considering the madcap rush of Running Scared's wicked fun and inspired lunacy, you won't have the time to anyway. --Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars PAUL WALKER RULES THE SCREEN!!!.......2007-09-05

this movie gives you a rush! you feel like your on a high! this a great movie, truly spectacular, very well made. deserves all the stars it can get. paul walker really shines on here. very good acting, the intensity that he brings to you is crazy. did not expect it to be as good as it was, but he made this movie memorable. extremely impressed. there was so much going on and all of it thrilled you and all of it you understood, all that can happen in a day. crazy. they give you everything in this movie that you can possibly have in an action thriller. it took me on an excellent ride, and it took me a while to get over it. sweet movie, with mobsters, crooked cops, a nasty pimp, and the ladies of the night. nicely done, can't wait to see another along these lines. this is what paul walker does best no doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent thriller!.......2007-08-23

This is the frist and only movie of Paul Walker, which I really liked.
I think he stars much better in this urban, dark thriller then as the usual sunny-boy.
It`s suspenseful, unpredictable and shows a good performance of all actors involved.
Absolutely recommended!

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this movie.......2007-08-13

Thank goodness I didn't read any reviews on this movie before I had the chance to see it. If I had, I would have missed out on a really interesting, gory yet entertaining movie. If it were a book, I would say I couldn't put it down. I guess I could say I couldn't turn away or couldn't turn it off. I tried, because it was on pretty late the night I saw it, but the second I hit the record button on my DVR so that I could turn the TV off, it got really good.

Yes, this is a dark, violent, disturbing movie. I worried about the kids in the movie being exposed to such horrible things. But even with that, I still liked the movie. I had to see what would happen to everyone and how it would all end and I was so happy that I did. The surprise revelation at the end made sitting through the blood and guns all worth it.

And if I'm being completly honest, Paul Walker was another reason to sit through the movie. He's incredibly gorgeous, but he's surprisingly good at the action movie thing. I thought he did a great job conveying the desperation of a man whose life is on the line and he's only got a few hours to fix the big mess he's created. And again, the ending was awesome. I also got an incredible amount of satisfaction from the scene with Joey's wife and the weird perverted couple.

4 out of 5 stars Complex and Scary.......2007-08-05

Good Grief, this thing was kind of like a combination between Crash and Reservoir Dogs, with a whole lot of other things thrown in. In that case it is almost too much to swallow, but it is still worth viewing.

This film just starts out nice and easy, until a pistol comes up missing. Suddenly there is a chain reaction that happens in regards to the pistol's past and different reasons people need to find it. The plot thickens, and I mean it gets thick. More and more players come into the fold and the chase is on. A lot of mysteries as many of the characters have interlocking lives that really make for a complex plot. Some wicked shootout scenes in the end and some right vs. wrong and such play into it as well.

I am not familiar with Paul Walker as an actor, but from viewing this film he was pretty convincing in the stressful situations that his character was facing. That made it all the more intense and real in my mind. Just hold on to your hat people, because this one is a wild one!

3 out of 5 stars GOOD ACTION FILM MUCH BETTER THAN AVERAGE.......2007-05-31

This movie is way better than I expected. The action never stops and the story is interesting enough to keep you in the groove. The DVD transfer is excellent and is a worth a look for sure.

When a shark accidentally clobbers himself, a small fish named Oscar (voiced by Will Smith, I, Robot) just happens to be around, prompting everyone to believe that he killed the shark himself. This lie soon makes Oscar a celebrity, worshipped by the general mass of fish, wooed by a glittering golddigger (Angelina Jolie, Girl, Interrupted), missed by his best friend (Renee Zellweger, Cold Mountain)--and hunted by the godfather of great whites (Robert De Niro, Goodfellas). Can a vegetarian shark named Lenny (Jack Black, School of Rock) get Oscar out of this mess? The formulaic story of Shark Tale never reaches the giddy heights of Pixar's output (Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Toy Story) or the freewheeling comedy of Shrek, but it's capably told and impeccably animated--the sheer technical skill is stunning. Kids won't get the mobster jokes or the other pop-culture references, but they'll enjoy it nonetheless. --Bret Fetzer

Description

A comic catch from the studio that brought you Shrek, Shark Tale is a hilarious hit and "a wonderful under-the-sea adventure for movie lovers of all ages!" (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood)

Oscar (Will Smith), a lowly tongue-scrubber at the local Whale Wash, becomes an improbable hero when he tells a great white lie. To keep his secret, Oscar teams up with an outcast vegetarian shark, Lenny (Jack Black), and the two become the most unlikely of friends. When his lie begins to unravel, it's up to Oscar's loyal friend Angie (Renée Zellweger) and Lenny to help him stand up to the most feared shark in the water (Robert De Niro) and find his true place in the reef.

5 out of 5 stars A Shark's Tale.......2007-07-15

I thought this was a really fun movie for children and adults. With a cast like Robert DeNiro, Martin Scorcese, Will Smith, Angelina Jolie and Renee Zellweger, how can you go wrong? Loved the soundtrack too!

5 out of 5 stars Great Kids Movie.......2007-07-02

Great kids movie teaches a lesson on streching the truth. Really cute plot the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air -- underwater!.......2007-07-01

Great voicework, a fun story, romance plus suspense, lots of sight gags, movie-fan in-jokes, fine animation and a great soundtrack. That's "Shark Tale" in a nutshell.

I can't figure out why people comparing this to "Finding Nemo." They are not alike, and comparisons really are pointless. In fact, Shark Tale is stylistically distinct from most other animated films of recent years. It also has its own brand of humor, which is funny in ways quite unlike the typical Pixar/Disney offering we've gotten used to.

Shark Tale is informed by urban culture, which is why *this* reef is traversed by buses (whales) and police cars (orcas), and has a giant screen TV above it all, featuring live news feeds, commercials, and so on. It's much, much closer to the "real" world of humans than one is used to seeing.

In Finding Nemo, one can't recognize the face of Albert Brooks in Marlin the cartoon fish. But in this movie, Oscar is physically reminiscent of Will Smith, Don Leno really reminds one of Robert DeNiro, and Sikes is, somehow, a dead ringer for Martin Scorsese.

In my view, this adds to the humor and the fun. Don Leno is written as a broad cariacature of Mafia dons, and DeNiro has of course played the ultimate human version -- Don Corleone, in the Godfather trilogy. There are other movie in-jokes all over the place.

A gang of shrimp, formerly destined for Don Leno's dinner, escape -- and when they later find a chance to attack Don Leno, the head shrimp says "Say hello to my little friends" -- a line from Al Pacino's famous turn in Scarface, made hilarious by the oddball new setting.

When Oscar defeats Lenny in a staged fight, and poses for the news cameras to publicize his new role as the Sharkslayer, he recites other movie lines that are inane, even surrealistic in this context, like "You can't handle the truth" (Jack Nicholson's line from A Few Good Men), and then "You had me at hello" (Renée Zellweger's line from Jerry Maguire).

The latter line demonstrates just how shallow Oscar is (he can't even come up with original words to boast with), while showing how mindless and uncritical the crowds are (they cheer the line despite its nonsensicality). Meanwhile, it's an inside joke for movie viewers who note that Ms. Zellweger is in this film, too, playing Oscar's "true" love interest, Angie.

Sikes' henchmen are two jellyfish, and the filmmakers depicted them as Jamaican rasta men, with tentacles in lieu of long dreadlocks. They then typecast reggae stars Ziggy Marley and Doug E. Doug in the roles. They're perfect as the character voices, while also providing great music for the soundtrack.

The film's distinctive style may cause one to overlook the skill that must have been required to depict all these characters as fish, with more-or-less realistic swimming motions, who nevertheless manage goofy slapstick right out of vaudeville. If you pay attention you notice Don Leno's consigliere, Luca, pouring a cup of tea -- which, of course, flows out of the cup and into the surrounding water before Luca can drink it. I mean, this kind of stuff is silly, but (in my view) is funny mostly because nobody in the film calls attention to it.

The ONLY reason I held back from five full stars is because it really isn't appropriate for the very young -- like, under six or seven at least (in my view). I find it frustrating at how hard it is to find a good animated film that doesn't have a lot of violence or adult themes. There is a fair amount of fighting and other types of conflict, which some kids might be used to -- but in any case, now you know.

Bottom line, it's a fun film that stands up to repeat viewing, and if the parents approve it for their kids, it's perfect for whole-family movie nights. Hint: get ready to dance when the music rolls over the end credits!

2 out of 5 stars Shark Tale.......2007-05-23

Oscar is a fish who works in a "whale wash", like his Dad did. He wants to be a somebody, but without much money there's not much chance of that. In fact, he's in a bit of debt with the owner of the whale wash, and he ends up being tied up underwater, left to the sharks. When a shark looking to feed on him accidentally is killed by an anchor, Oscar takes the credit as a "shark slayer". Maybe he'll be a somebody then...

"Shark Tale" is pretty smoothly animated, but the plot isn't quite that engaging. Two and a half stars.

Actor-turned-director Edward James Olmos set out to spread the word against the destructiveness of gang violence with this 1992 gritty drama. Set in the barrios of East Los Angeles, he attempts to cover 30 years in the life of a family with strong gang ties. This brutally realistic story may not intentionally glorify violence, but it offers no answers. (Olmos actually shot the prison scenes in Folsom, which explains their harsh reality.) Great performances though, especially by Olmos and William Forsythe. Olmos plays a gang leader released from prison who is finally in touch with himself, only to realize it is too late. The one major problem with this well-intentioned flick is that it is rated R for violence, nudity, and profanity. Therefore, the kids who most need its message are not, in theory, the ones who will see it. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars OMG!!.......2007-06-12

This movie gave me nightmares for a week. Seriously, I felt physically ill while watching this movie. It's been a long time since I saw a movie this graphic in nature. Frankly, it's not for the squeamish or overly sensitive crowd. With that being said, it's a typical prison drama. You pretty much have the usual rape, death by shankings, and rioting scenes. To this day, I have never seen a prison movie that ended on a good note, and I certainly can't remember anything good about this one either. This movie was just sad and depressing from start to finish. Edward James Olmos plays a youth who's life is a downward spiral soon as he's sent to a youth detention center. Of course, he's raped there by another male youth (which he kills). From there, he gains respect, but he also gains a sure ticket into prison as soon as he turns 18. This movie is sad because even after he gets out of prison he can't seem to make it on the outside or blend into society because he's been locked away for so long, and he still has that prison mentality. Ultimately that leads to his demise. That's pretty much what this movie is about..nothing real impressive! I do think what pushes it over the edge is the brutality of the rape scenes. I must admit watching a man being tied down and gang raped by 4 inmates was enough to haunt me for a while. Especially, the fact that they were sick enough to enjoy this at the same time, and be so kind as to use KY Jelly first. What happens after that I won't even mention. This movie is not for kids at all. However, I do suggest that it be shown to all teens and pre-teens who think their so tough, and that jail is a place they truely want to be. I think that after they see this it might change quite a few minds.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opener.......2007-05-26

I actually saw this film in my criminal justice class. It's a very disturbing but realistic film. You can tell, a lot of research was put into its development. This story does not trash anyone, it just tells a very true account of prison life and the development of the original prison gang.

5 out of 5 stars Fue chida.......2007-04-27

I felt sick watching American Me, but then I appreciated more and more as I constantly continued to watch it again. I recommend sensitive people NOT to watch it. Any vato from the Barrio should relate to this material. Cuz I did. :)

5 out of 5 stars American Me.......2007-04-01

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Hard hitting, graphic and an eye opener to the inner workings of prison and gang life. Great companion to Blood in Blood out (Bound By Honor.)

3 out of 5 stars Very Disturbing.......2007-03-17

My husband and I were disturbed for weeks by the graphic content of some scenes. Definitely not for young people. It was very scary to think gangs have so much influence and power. It does make you want to stop and do whatever necessary to prevent gang activity, especially in young people. We need to do more to educate these young victims.

Charismatic young stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus play two Irish brothers, Connor and Murphy, who believe themselves ordained by God to rid the world of evil men. Their first killing is in self-defense; but after that, they start killing with devotion, gunning down a summit of the Russian mafia. Willem Dafoe plays a gay FBI agent (he listens to opera while examining crime scenes) who knows what the boys are doing but feels that their vigilante tactics are necessary. There's not much plot to The Boondock Saints--it's mostly a series of violent scenes in which the boys are partially ingenious and partially lucky. The movie seems to want to provoke debate about vigilantism, but the scenario is too implausible to stir any real controversy. The peculiar mix of earnestness and machismo will not appeal to everyone, but it's certainly unique and may acquire a cult following. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Holy Action!!.......2007-09-05

The Boondock Saints (italicize), released in 1999, could possibly be described as a "cult flick," since it never saw intense gains at the box office during its theatrical release. However, it is a fantastic drama with both memorable characters and fantastic performances from some up-and-coming Hollywood names.

Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus star as devoutly Irish Catholic twin brothers, Connor and Murphy McManus, whose chance bar fight with Russian mobsters leads them to killing two peons in self-defense. After spending a night in jail and being released without charges, the two come to believe they are supernaturally appointed to enact God's justice on evil men. A virtual slaughter of vigilantism ensues, with the brothers and their new recruit, David Della Rocco, taking out all that is evil in South Boston. When the killings begin to hit closer and closer to home for infamous mafia don "Papa Joe" Yakavetta, he secures the release of an old family hit man, the mysterious "Il Duche."

Willem Dafoe gives a smashing performance as Paul Smecker , the anomalous FBI agent assigned to investigate the mob-related killings. His uncanny detective skills soon have him hot on the trail of the two brothers, and once Smecker realizes the particular brand of vigilantism the brothers are executing, he must make a choice to either take them down or enable their continuance.

With choppy dramatic sequencing including flashbacks and layered scene cutting, a few critics have compared the style of The Boondock Saints to that of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Some even write it off as a cheap imitation. However, the memorable characters, unique humor and religious twist of The Boondock Saints ensures that it holds its own place in the line of "shoot-`em-up" mobster movies. Don't miss out on the Saints phenomenon.

5 out of 5 stars Lollerblades.......2007-07-19

Wow, I can't believe how many 1 stars this movie has produced. Ever since the movie came out, I haven't met ONE person that thought so negatively of the film, and I know a LOT of people from a LOT of places. I guess there just has to be haters of everything on this planet.

It's just a movie anyways, and there are TONS of movies out there WAY worse than this one could ever dream up to be.

5 out of 5 stars Are you kidding? This is like a gift from the Hollywood Gods!.......2007-06-19

I cannot believe that a movie with so much intelligence and gnashing bite made it through the editing room to my home theater. Two Irish-Catholic brothers that fall into vigilantism so effortlessly and do it so well, that is a recipe for a plot that fuels this amazing film. Do yourself a favor and watch this over and over.

1 out of 5 stars Horribly overrated.......2007-06-07

As another reviewer put it, this is one of those movies that is unintentionally funny. The acting is awful and the plot nonsensical. I originally got it because of all its rave reviews here, of which I no longer trust. This one has all the acting and plot of a late-night straight-to-TV flick. I had a hard time making it all the way through. This one is a real stinker, if you want Boston-style mob violence save yourself the trouble and watch the horribly depressing (but much, much better) The Departed instead.

2 out of 5 stars Belongs Under Comedy/Fantasy not Action/Drama.......2007-05-08

This self-indulgent caricature of a movie was just plain awful. I admit, the story intrigued me; two shanty Irish vigilantes from Southie killing bad guys in the name of God? OK, I'll give it a shot, plus I heard all these rave reviews about it. Boy was I in for an unpleasant surprise. The acting was horrible and most of the characters were so ridiculous that I couldn't even take them seriously. This is one of those films that is unintentionally funny. All kidding aside, this is literally how I think a 13 year old would visualize a good action/drama film. So unless you have the mentality of a pre-teen or can enjoy this movie for what it is, a comedy/fantasy, I would suggest you don't waste your time. For a decent movie about South Boston, go watch The Departed or even Southie instead.

4 out of 5 stars One gory comedy.......2007-07-10

What can you say about Ichi the Killer? It's actually fits more into the genre of a comedy than anything else. Don't let all the hype about the gore and the blood-letting scare you, since it's more in the league of "Kill Bill," or some of the earlier Peter Jackson horror flicks; in another word, it's over exaggerated violence, which makes it look very artificial. In fact, the entire movie has a bit of a cartoonish feel to it; well, it was based on a manga after all.

The basic premise is that there's this guy name Ichi, who was tramatized by an event he witnessed when he was in high school. So, he is left with all this guilt, and now he is trying to make up for his past sins by playing this superhero, who "protects" the innocent. There is only one problem to this... Ichi is actually a psycho. Due to Ichi's psychological handicap, a man by the name of JiJii was able to manipulate him to his will, thus the blood-bath begins.

There are plenty of scenes that can be described as disturbing, but usually the more gruesome scenes are done off screen; but as I mentioned previously, even when you see them, they are exaggerated to the point where you thought you might be watching an episode of Itchy and Scratchy. With this in mind, along with quite a large amount of scenes that can be considered to be funny, this is indeed a bona fide comedy (no sarcasm implied)!

4 out of 5 stars A must see.......2007-06-27

If you are a fan of Audition, then you must see this movie. Its brutal, but in a beautiful way!

5 out of 5 stars There's no love in your punches at all!.......2007-06-15

Koroshiya Ichi is probably the ne plus ultra of violent movies that makes A Clockwork Orange like The Sound of Music. The last time I saw something so gruesome was Ilsa-She Wolf of the SS.

A mob boss named Anjo disappears along with 3 million yen, and his devoted lackey Masa Kakihara, a scar-faced blond-haired yakuza with piercings sporting a flashy purple trenchcoat, with two slits on either side of his cheek, takes it upon himself to find out who kidnapped him.

Kakihara is quite the sadist, but just as equally a masochist, as he even cuts off his own tongue to apologize to a syndicate boss. Given a tip by Jijii, one of a group of Chinese immigrants eking out livings doing dirty jobs in Shinjuku, he kidnaps Suzuki, a yakuza boss, strips him naked, hangs him from the ceiling with hooks, and pours boiling hot oil over the guy's back! Yakuza tempura, hmmm....He also has his trademark long pins, which he uses to deadly affect, resulting in human pincushions.

The mastermind is Jijii. His killer is Ichi (Japanese for one), a mentally fragile guy who dresses up in a black rubber suit with a day-glo "1" on the back. His goal is to wipe out the yakuza in Shinjuku. And he persuades the easily swayed Ichi that they are like the people who bullied him in high school, and that it's his role to rid the world of bullies. "They beat upon the weak and pretend to own the world. Vengeance is yours. If you don't kill the bad guys, who will?" However, Jijii doesn't hesitate to use Ichi to get rid of his helpers, who are just tools for his crusade against the yakuza.

Ichi is so extreme in his killings that the people who witness what he has done see a mass of blood, entrails, splattered walls and ceilings, and at one point a human face that has been sliced off. "As gross as ever," says one of his cleaners, who has slipped on the scarlet mess on the floor. In fact in one scene, Ichi kicks down a door, jumps inside a room filled with yakuza. We then hear screams, then yakuza blood and guts flying out the door. A repeated motif is his slicing the carotid artery, and then fwoooshhhh, out comes, as Alex from A Clockwork Orange would say, the red red kroovy.

This movie is very very sadistic, meaning those with a weak stomach watching this during dinner will find themselves emptying breakfast stuff! Although given the comic-book like depictions of mutilation, it will also garner some laughs for the really twisted--the drug-addicted Kano in the TV set for example. But the scene of a pimp savagely beating one of his prostitutes and then violating her ranks high on the cruelty list. Don't worry-he gets his from Ichi and how! And a prostitute is not only beaten but has her nipples sliced off by Kakihara! Ouch!

After being expelled from the syndicate, Kakihara continues the search for Anjo. With him are tough guy Takayama and a disgraced ex-cop Kaneko, who looks a bit like Barack Obama. Kaneko's probably one of the more decent characters, he's just had rotten luck. In fact, he is one of the few genuinely nice to Ichi, as he's reminded how Anjo took him in after he was expelled from the police force for losing his gun, something that even Jijii recognizes. Then there's Karen, a Chinese call-girl who speaks heavily accented Japanese and English. Her anecdote of her wishing someone's dog dead is funny. Note: in that story, she mentions a nawatobi rope which is merely Japanese for a jumprope.

This is kind of a departure from Asano Tadanobu's usual roles. This actor, the Johnny Depp of Japan, normally has a soft-spoken undertone, but the blond hair, scarred face, wicked smile, and slits that cause his mouth to open extra wide, make this one of his more memorable roles.

With a soundtrack veers from weird gibberish techno to a slow synth score, and a kind of retro-70's style cinematography, liking Ichi the Killer depends upon your stomach, and an open mind to extreme violence.

"Listen, when you're hurting someone, don't think of the pain that he feels. Only concentrate on the pleasure of causing him pain. That's the only way to show compassion to your partner."---Kakihara to Karen.

1 out of 5 stars bunch of weenies acting tough.......2007-06-12

not a single frame of celluloid that is believable here. bunch of puny little wimps acting tough. oh yeah. so bad, so ridiculous...and, ultimately, so moronic.

the reason this "director" (I use the term loosely) tries to "shock" (and can't even do that very well, by the way) is because he lacks true talent required to tell a great crime story.

Let's hope he didn't give himself hernia while straining to disgust us with this pile of vomit.

3 out of 5 stars Ultra Violent Madness, For Better or Worse.......2007-05-11

Live Action Anime...yes it is an oxymoron, but it's one way to describe what Director Takashi Miike has done with Ichi the Killer. It's like a live action version of Akira or Ninja Scroll.

The film's plot is secondary so I won't dwell on it here, but if you have never seen Miike's films, get ready for a ride through the imagination of a complete mad man. The best part about the film is that Miike and his team are actually outstanding technically, and his sense of humor is both original and in my opinion hilarious.

Ichi the Killer is as glossed over and stylized as it is sadistic and violent, and believe me when I say that this film is violent. It's sexually violent content is out of whack as well and alone might earn Ichi an NC-17 stamp but it's violence is so fantastic it almost seems cartoon-like. If you didn't find humor in films like Dead Alive, Robocop, Evil Dead 2 or Kill Bill pass on Ichi, but if you like those films like I do, give Miike a chance, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL MOB FLICK...GRIM AND GRITTY..........2007-03-26

This griity and grim mob flick, deftly directed by Mike Newell, is based upon the true story of FBI undercover, Joe Pistone, who. as his alter ego "Donnie Brasco", infiltrated the mob for a number of years, resulting in its eventual decimation. So artfully did the real Joe Pistone infiltrate and so well did he do his job, that he and his family were obliged to enter the witness protection program for their safety, as a contract was ultimately put out on Joe Pistone's life.

Here, Johnny Depp, plays the role of Joe Pistone/Donnie Brasco. He is terrific in the role, and the viewer watches him become absorbed by the lifestyle of the mobsters with whom he associates. He is befriended by "Lefty" Ruggierro, artfully played Al Pacino. Shifty and
common, "Lefty" typifies your low level made guy, the guy on the fringes doing the dirty work, a real bottom feeder. He is the guy who does the hits, and he is the guy the higher ups look to whack when something goes wrong. It is not an enviable or glamourous life, as has been made out by other films, such as the "Godfather" and "Goodfellas". The existence of "Lefty" and the legions like him is gritty and grim, always a bridesmaid and never a bride.

"Lefty" takes Brasco under his wing and vouches for him. He shows Brasco the ABCs of becoming a "made" guy. "Lefty" himself wants to move up in the mob hierarchy. It soon becomes painfully obvious that that ain't gonna happen. One cannot help feel a little sorry for "Lefty", so limited is his world view and so at the mercy of others. Still, "Lefty" gives Donnie some invaluable lessons on mob etiquette. He also unburdens himself to Donnie, treating him as if he were his adopted son. The bond between the two men grows. As this happens, Donnie finds himself being pulled more and more into the world of mobsters, until his old and new reality begin to merge.

As he distances himself drom his wife (Anne Heche) and family, Brasco is thrust into a maelstrom of mob violence that threatens to tear him apart and consume him. He tries to get "Lefty" to go straight and retire, in hope of avoiding his betrayal. It is to no avail. Brasco, in for a penny, in for a pound, now stands to become a "made" guy himself. It is only at the eleventh hour that an intervention set up by the FBI plays itself out, setting up the betrayal of "Lefty". It is a sad moment for Brasco, as he knows that "Lefty" has just been handed a death sentence at the hands of the mob for vouching for an FBI agent. It is Brasco's ultimate salvation, however, as he was on the brink of committing an unpardonable act, one in which he would have crossed the line and from which there would have been no turning back. It is a decision that was, luckily for him, taken out of his hands.

Al Pacino gives the defining, superlative performance in this film. Anne Heche is sensational as the put upon, concerned wife, who watches her husband change into someone she can barely recognize. Johnny Depp, likewise, gives a stellar performance as the angst ridden FBI undercover agent. All in all, a terrific film with a stellar cast and well worth having in one's collection.
