Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh

The film "MASK"is a film that gives our generation a positive voice.A voice that says,"In the negative side of Life where there is often pain,despair,discouragement.""MASK"is a lift for the heart and spirit of humanity.This film is a true story.A story of courage,hope,determination against incredible odds.It shows how cold and judgemental society can be,especially when they lack the understanding of the afflications and suffering of their fellow humans.Rocky Dennis was an individual to admire,love,and be inspired by.Eric Stolz is a stellar actor whom I feel put his heart and soul into the portrayal of Rocky.He is one of my favorites along with Sam Elliott and Cher.Sam Elliott,perfect in the role of Gar,is a excellent father figure and has never disappointed with his acting talent.I've loved every film he has done.It's hard to nail down which film is his best,but I think this film should definitely be considered for him receiving an oscar.Cher,whom I've loved since her days with the "Sonny and Cher"show has definitely reached far beyond her talent into the acting realm ,and has not only achieved great fame as a singer and performer in concerts,but knocked fans out with her many great films.She is also a huge talent and success as a actress.This film,where she portrays Rocky Dennis mother,is very well done,she really gets into every role she takes on.Rusty Dennis had a big heart full of love and hope for her son Rocky.It was a moving experience because Cher played the role,and did it well.This film is definitely one of Cher's best.I hope that anyone who watches this film,isn't just entertained,but deeply moved and inspired as I have been.The music of Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen makes the impact of the film even stronger.I,by the way have Cerebral Palsey.I've had it since birth.I know what it is to be treated unfairly by cruel,ignorant people,who think you're weird because you look different,don't walk "normal".Disabilities are in all of us.They don't show as much in some as they do in others.I like to think of mine as "A Little Inconvienance"Rocky Dennis triumphed over his,touching lots of hearts and lives.God Bless you Rocky,Rusty,Gar,for showing us all how to really live,beating the odds.Thanks to a compassionate mother for letting Rocky's story be told.Thanks too to a stellar cast,and a director with likewise hearts,to tell Rocky's story so warmly on the screen.To all of you fellow film buffs out there,count your blessings open your hearts,buy this film.I guarentee,you will be impressed,moved,inspired,and will never feel that you got a tougher break in life.This film speaks for all generations past and present.It is,in my opinion a blockbuster classic!

I love this move. It's so full of emotions. It's about Rocky (Eric Stoltz), a 16 year old boy who has a deformed face. His mother is Rusty (played by Cher) and she really fights for her son to have a normal life. Both of them have their devoted friends in a biker environment. I've seen it a lot of times and I cry every time. Heartfelt and excellent acting

I liked it so much better when Eric Stoltz lived with that other family and decided to shack up with his tomboy drummer next-door neighbor chick with the new wave hairdo and duds, and tight little body. He turned down the annoying, future homemaker-looking Mrs. Popularity in the process. Amazing! Damn, it looks like Eric got stung in the face by a wild pack of bees for hours and then had his head stretched on a rack after being taken in by his new foster mom and biker gang. Don't worry, these are the same bikers as the ones who deliver cute little stuffed animals to kids with leukemia, so it's all good. Not! Later, if you'll remember, Eric devolves into a drug addict bank robber in Paris and eventually earns a living selling drugs to folks like Vincent Vega, an inane, puffy-faced and high-ranking Scientology official. So I guess you can at least partly blame Eric for "Battlefield Earth."
How About A 2-Disc Set? With A Documentary About The Real Rocky Dennis.......2006-08-27
I am not going to write about the movie as what more can be said, its incredible, emotional, touching, etc.
I think they need to make a definitive 2-disc edition.
On it, should at least be the following:
-All the extras from this version plus new extras
-A documentary about the real Rocky Dennis, including actual pictures, interviews, etc.
-Where is Eric Stoltz in the extras? Should have interviews with Eric about what it was like playing Rocky Dennis, etc.
- I love the Springsteen music in it but also enjoyed the music in the theatrical version so they should include that version on the 2nd disc.
-At the end of the movie after the credits roll Cher comes on and talks about the disease/disfigurement. This should be longer and could include experts talking about it like doctors, family members, etc. I also think they should've put the Cher interview on the actual special features listing in the dvd and on the back of the case, why have it buried at the end of the movie where not everyone will see it?
hopefully you found this review helpful, if enough people did, maybe the studio will see the demand and release a definitive 2-disc set.

Son of the Mask is a frantic sequel tailor-made for short attention spans. This is what this movie is for me! I have a 4 and 5 year old who saw this movie on the Cartoon Network and they thought it was hilarious! I thought it was the stupidest thing I have ever seen! I have the DVD "The Mask" and enjoyed it with my children because we LOVE movies with Jim Carey. So, I thought that this sequel could be some-what funny because of the theme and that the cast includes a baby with the power of the "mask". Again, this movie is ridiculously DUMB and I wanted to erase the memory from my brain, however, my children kept asking when it will come on the television again! So, I caved in and bought a used VHS of this film! As soon as my children get tired of it, I am going to use it to record television shows!

Alright, let me explain why I love Son of the Mask: if you watch the movie JUST for the special effects, I think you will find yourself really into it, and your opinions will go up.
As for the storyline and character development and all that stuff... well, there's really not a whole lot of it. In fact, hardly none. If there's any development going on, it's just BARELY there. It's the type of comedy that's really far-fetched, but I honestly believe the special effects save the thing. I've never EVER seen so many "totally out there" effects in all my life. As you can imagine, the pacing is pretty fast too.
Most of the focus is on the little baby, who really cracks me up with all the exaggerated special effects they gave him. The same can be said for the family dog. It's just like watching a cartoon, only it's NOT a cartoon!
The effects are EXTRAORDINARY! Not to mention NONSTOP. You're watching one crazy effect right after another- quite fascinating to watch them and it's quite easy to get sucked in to this fantasy land of infinite possibilities.
Don't worry about the characters you see on screen, or anything like that. Just watch the special effects.

We tripped over this movie and had never watched it before because of the torrent of bad reviews. We were pleasantly surprised at how good it was!
This will never win an Oscar but it is extremely silly, has non-stop action and a kinda nice sappy theme about family unity and a father's love. Add the recognition that even a DOG can become jealous of a new baby and the extra attention they receive, and there is room here for some family discussion/connecting about these important topics. As a side note, I used this movie with a mask making activity with some very bored high school seniors at the end of the school year and we had a grand time. Little bit of potty humor--but overall a keeper!

not REALLY like the original but I like the story because it goes with the flow of the times. really funny dog and I like Odin's appearance here. Great models of a town can be imitated for your parks and personal playgrounds.

The movie was very good with Sutherland and Fox doing excellent work. Fox was a new name to me as I had not heard of him before Lost. Sutherland is always good. The storyline was not what I expected and I was pleasantly surprised.

Home For Christmas- Better Than You Think.......2005-08-20
I remember seeing this on TV several years ago, and thinking this is going to be horrible! Was I ever wrong! Its a surprisingly touching holiday movie, with great performances from Howard Hessman, and Jennifer Love Hewitt(Here billed as Love Hewitt).
With the exception of "Part Of Five," I was never a huge Hewitt fan. Home For Christmas was a great example of how good she can be when Hollywood isn't giving her bad scripts. Her chemistry with Hessman was terrific, and that smile could light up the night. A very pleasant surprise, and one that I will continue to watch form time to time.
A FEEL GOOD HOLIDAY MOVIE.......2005-06-17
Can't take my eyes off on Jennifer "Love" Hewitt while watching this movie. I'm glued to it. I enjoy watching her. She's so natural as if she's not acting. I really love and adore her so much that I want to kiss her because she is so CUTE on her younger days. I recommend watching this movie because it brings the holiday spirit on what it reallly means, being with the family and the values the goes with it.

This is a great movie! Actually, it kinda depends on your tastes. If you love heartwarming, wonderful Christmas tales, then you will love this movie! Even if you don't, JLH fans, you might want to watch it, just for the heck of seeing Jennifer Love Hewitt when she was younger!

The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). I love this move. It's so full of emotions. It's about Rocky (Eric Stoltz), a 16 year old boy who has a deformed face. His mother is Rusty (played by Cher) and she really fights for her son to have a normal life. Both of them have their devoted friends in a biker environment. I've seen it a lot of times and I cry every time. Heartfelt and excellent acting

I liked it so much better when Eric Stoltz lived with that other family and decided to shack up with his tomboy drummer next-door neighbor chick with the new wave hairdo and duds, and tight little body. He turned down the annoying, future homemaker-looking Mrs. Popularity in the process. Amazing! Damn, it looks like Eric got stung in the face by a wild pack of bees for hours and then had his head stretched on a rack after being taken in by his new foster mom and biker gang. Don't worry, these are the same bikers as the ones who deliver cute little stuffed animals to kids with leukemia, so it's all good. Not! Later, if you'll remember, Eric devolves into a drug addict bank robber in Paris and eventually earns a living selling drugs to folks like Vincent Vega, an inane, puffy-faced and high-ranking Scientology official. So I guess you can at least partly blame Eric for "Battlefield Earth."
How About A 2-Disc Set? With A Documentary About The Real Rocky Dennis.......2006-08-27
I am not going to write about the movie as what more can be said, its incredible, emotional, touching, etc.
I think they need to make a definitive 2-disc edition.
On it, should at least be the following:
-All the extras from this version plus new extras
-A documentary about the real Rocky Dennis, including actual pictures, interviews, etc.
-Where is Eric Stoltz in the extras? Should have interviews with Eric about what it was like playing Rocky Dennis, etc.
- I love the Springsteen music in it but also enjoyed the music in the theatrical version so they should include that version on the 2nd disc.
-At the end of the movie after the credits roll Cher comes on and talks about the disease/disfigurement. This should be longer and could include experts talking about it like doctors, family members, etc. I also think they should've put the Cher interview on the actual special features listing in the dvd and on the back of the case, why have it buried at the end of the movie where not everyone will see it?
hopefully you found this review helpful, if enough people did, maybe the studio will see the demand and release a definitive 2-disc set.

Murder mystery with kung fu in old China.......2001-11-26
MASK OF DEATH (aka SHAOLIN DEVIL AND SHAOLIN ANGEL, 1979) is a well-made costume tale about a series of murders that offers just enough fighting to barely qualify as a kung fu film. Detailing the fate of a family decimated by the murders, it follows the efforts of a brother and sister to identify the murderers and avenge their family. They are helped by a secret agent, masquerading as an assassin (Wong Tao), and encounter numerous surprises along the way, culminating in a final battle with an unlikely enemy. It's packed with characters, incident, subplots and flashbacks, but, while never boring, is never very exciting either. No one bothered to string the incidents together in any cohesive order. Key people disappear for long stretches and we're not always sure who the main characters are supposed to be. When we learn finally who the villain is and why the murders occurred, it's too late to develop any dramatic tension or suspense.
Tung Wei is credited as co-fight director and also plays a young scholar who goes off, after his father's murder, to learn kung fu from a Buddhist monk. When he finally reappears to join the heroes, his kung fu doesn't help much. Overall, the fight scenes lack the vigor, imagination and relentlessness such scenes require. Wong Tao, normally quite a firebrand in his films, including THE HOT, THE COOL AND THE VICIOUS, in which he played a vaguely similar character, is too restrained here, trapped in a wig and period costume, spending too much time brooding and lamenting a childhood spent working in a brothel (seen in flashbacks). There's far more melodrama than a film like this is generally comfortable with.
All that said, however, the film is beautifully photographed, designed and costumed. It's a consistent visual treat, even when the narrative sags. The Crash Cinema DVD offers a very good letter-boxed transfer of an original print with sharp imagery and striking color. However, the print is extremely scratchy in parts, with occasional speckles and scratch lines streaking vertically through the film. Some parts, however, are not so bad and look almost pristine. The DVD case features a picture of Yasuaki Kurata, a Japanese actor/fighter who often starred in Hong Kong movies (SHAOLIN CHALLENGES NINJA), but doesn't appear in this one.
Very Good Cung fu classic, but...........2001-10-04
This is an entertaining Kung fu flick, but it has allot of scratches and lines throughout the movie. I've seen older kung fu flicks in better condition. There was no effort in remastering it. This is the only copy of MASK OF DEATH on DVD right now so if you really want it just be aware of the condition of it.

aka "Shaolin devil, Shaolin angel", this movie is worth at least 2 titles and 5 stars. The cinematography in this movie is masterful, especially for being so old ('76), and depicts wong tao and chen sing (not my favorite of actors, but perhaps the finest work of his career)in many confrontations and battles. dvd is of great clarity and quality, except for some non-invasive, but visable verticle lines. And there is actually a descent storyline with some almost tarantino-style flashbacks. why is shoji kurata on the cover though?
