In his aim to make an honest film about sex, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) has taken a somewhat documentary approach to Shortbus, a film describing various New Yorkers' sexual pathos. Framed by shots roving a homemade diorama of the city, Shortbus is comprised of vignettes featuring actors who helped craft this story of people's disconnect in sexual endeavors. Jamie (PJ DeBoy) and James (Paul Dawson), a gay couple experiencing a lull in their relationship, visit Sophia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist whose inability to orgasm results in her clients inviting her to a sex club after which the film is titled. Sophia's husband, Rob (Raphael Barker), is also willing to experiment, so the two independently embark on adventures in self-pleasure. Dominatrix Severin (Lindsay Beamish) plays a crucial role in Sophia and Rob's lives, as her search for real humanity overlaps with their desire for passion. As each character's plot complicates, the viewer sees a similar melancholy bulldozing its way into these seemingly disparate lives. The depression is repeatedly used in comedic scenes, such as when James is asked on a date while still hospitalized for his attempted suicide. Yo La Tengo's score, which includes Animal Collective among others, lends this film a graceful ambience. Unlike porn, Shortbus has a resonance that encourages the viewer to consider one's own sex life as an important aspect of happiness. --Trinie Dalton
Description
From the director of `Hedwig and the Angry Inch' comes SHORTBUS, an exploration into the lives of several characters living in present-day New York as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex. Male and female, straight and gay, the characters find one another - and eventually find themselves - when they all converge at a weekly underground salon called "Shortbus," a mad world of art, music, politics, and polysexual carnality. One of the true sensations of this year's Cannes Film Festival, presents sex and sexuality as never before seen in mainstream entertainment, and promises to be one of the most talked-about films for months - and years - to come.
Customer Reviews:
Points for trying, but a sad view of real intimacy........2007-09-13
I wish Amazon's rating system allowed half stars. I'd be tempted to give Shortbus 3 1/2 because I do appreciate Mitchell's attempt to treat sex matter-of-factly in an actual (and mostly engaging) movie. I also really liked his previous work, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" and wanted to be able to throw my support behind an innovative independent artist. As it stands though, my disappointment in what came across as the larger message of *this* movie can't help but override my feelings of goodwill.
The thing that bugged me in this film (bugged me in a *big* way) was the divorcing of sexual fulfillment from connection with loved ones. Without giving away plot particulars, I found it actually kind of distressing that key characters wind up only being able to find real sexual gratification with *strangers*. In a movie that's supposed to be about finding acceptance, that seems like a curious message.
Is this really Mitchell's view of "utopia"? Of friendship? That it's, what, *preferable* to share your vulnerability with strangers while shutting out and not communicating with...the people who love you and care about you and actually *deal* with your crap on a day-to-day basis?
It's extra bothersome, because I thought this was an engaging film in other respects -- some uneven acting and writing aside. There was a lot of promise here, and I want there to be a place for films that treat sex as a legitimately important topic. I only wish the end result didn't feel like its conclusions were so self-centered and emotionally immature.
Heartfelt and engaging.......2007-09-12
I have shown this to a few of my friends and have recieved split opinion.
The ones who did not like it are the ones who zoned out at the first scene from its 'explicitness'.
Basically, if you like independant cinema and you are not over sensitive you should appreciate this film.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Here are some of the reasons.
- Coherent and fluid storyline
- An excellent and suitable soundtrack
- Great performance from sook yin lee
- The movie was not self conscious
Sexy.......2007-08-23
If you are looking for raw sex and some psychological motivation for getting, staying, and/or being involved, then this movie is right for you. There is a little something for everyone!
surpassed expectations.......2007-08-16
I'd heard of Shortbus through several gay media outlets, and the reviews were varied but generally positive. Having seen it now, I was captivated. There were a few moments that were a bit hard to swallow, but what really held me were the other moments-- looks between characters: James and Jamie during the blackout, Sophie and Severin in the lesbian room, Sophie and the tattood lady in the Sex-Not-Bombs room, Sophie and the viewer the moment she 'causes' (and the moment she 'ends') the blackout, they all pull you so deeply into the moment the characters are experiencing. And the entire musical part at the end caused such an upswell of happiness. Certainly not for the squeamish or the purit(yr)annical, but for everyone else I'd encourage seeing it.
Hmmmmm..............2007-08-13
Not sure how exactly to rate this. It is at once soft porn, homoerotica, social commentary, tragedy, and romantic comedy. From the first scene to the end, I found myself sitting stock still with my mouth open; unsure exactly what I should be feeling. The first time I watched it, not kidding, I immediately watched it again. It was almost as if I wanted to be sure I had really watched the movie and had not drifted into some paranormal fantasia. A bit strange. A bit "stimulating". And DEFINITELY NOT something to watch with family, children, or coworkers. In fact, I would not watch it with anyone except maybe your best friend or lover. And even then, only after you have watched it alone at least once.
An interesting experience - I was left with similar feelings as I was after watching Mysterious Skin, albeit for somewhat different reasons.
I purposefully do not attempt to explain what this movie is about. It is worth purchasing, you will be intrigued at a minimum, and may love the movie for any number of reasons. But, you will understand exactly why it is hard to describe the plot.

A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-09-13
This movie is one of the great classics that everyone should see at least once.
quite simply the best film ever!.......2007-09-10
In my humble opinion this is the best film ever. Stellar acting and incomparable chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Paul Henreid exudes class and bravery. The incomparable Claude Rains. A witty screenplay, taut direction and an emotinal core that builds throughout the film right up to the most memorable ending of all-time. Play it again, and again and again.
Only the best!.......2007-09-09
A great movie must have certain components: (1) great acting, (2) action, (3) humor, (4) a compelling plot, and (5) a memorable song. This movie has all five and ranks, in my opinion, as the Best American Movie of the 20th Century.
Good but definitely not the best.......2007-09-06
I was very excited when i first watched this movie because it is almost on top of lists of all-time greatest movies and the reviews are like wow.. this must be really one of the best! After watching it, I was kinda disappointed because I think the story is so-so, there is no chemistry between the two lead cast (but Bergman is very lovely though). I don't know what's so special about this movie. Did I miss it or what?
Excellent movie, excellent presentation and special features.......2007-08-15
At 55 years of age, you'd think a movie lover such as myself would have seen Casablanca... but I hadn't until I bought this disc in July of 2007. If you understand what makes a finely crafted film that you can watch repeatedly and still continue to find things out about it that you love, this is one you'll enjoy immensely.
Start with the script - it is filled with tasty classic lines you'll really enjoy hearing in the context of the film. "Here's looking at you, Kid..." for example. Part of what makes all of it work is the vocal treatment by the actors in their delivery. The cast seems very comfortable with the characters they each play and so maybe that relaxed feel carries over to the degree of realism you sense when you watch it. Their dialogue does NOT seem scripted and that's hard to achieve on a consistent basis in a film. I suppose that's a big part of what's made Casablanca such a classic to all who have reviewed the work over the years.
The acting is superb across the board regardless of how small the part. Ingrid Bergman is luminescent to put it mildly. Bogie is really a powerhouse in this one, and Paul Henreid as well as Claude Rains deliver the kind of intimately detailed performances that just make you smile while you watch. Peter Lorre has a smaller part but exquisitely crafted in its execution. He makes it easy for you to hate him, let's put it that way. Sydney Greenstreet gives a solid presentation as well to round out the core ensemble performances given here.
The special features on this disc include a very nice introduction by Lauren Bacall, Bogart's widow. I watched it AFTER viewing the film as I wanted to get the same feel as audiences who originally viewed it in the theater, but I wish I had watched it first. Enlightening to say the least.
Another little gem is a series of trailers for Bogie's other movies. Great slices of the period as far as movie promotion goes! They serve as great reminders of a simpler time in America.
This particular film is a MUST HAVE for anyone's movie collection. I feel that repeated viewings year on year will only make you love it more than you did the first time. Not many films are able to do that.
I can safely say that if you, too, love truly great movies and you decide to purchase this one, it will be the start of a beautiful friendship.

David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable: we're talking one of the most vital, masculine performances ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Awesome considering when it was made.......2007-09-06
There are a few silly mistakes in the film, and I was suprised to see they were using blue screen already. However this is a classic drama with great strong performances. Hope someone remakes it someday.
Forever a Favorite.......2007-08-24
Have loved this movie for at least 20 years! Finally took-on the book this summer... if you haven't read it and you feel like conquering something then definitely get your hands on the book! It's a shame so many things were left out of the movie, but once you read the book, so many things are answered and it all comes together. Still, a great classic.
Nice movie.......2007-08-04
First off, I had to write a review of this because currently there are 666 reviews, and that is bad. Mine maked it 667, hurray!
Well, I liked this product. The box smells kind of nice (like anchovies a little). It came in the mail by a nice man who rang my doorbell. It was in a bigger box them and came with lots of styrofoam that came as a free gift. There are 2 discs in the box. They have different pictures on them. They can make good frisbees. Buy this product it will give you a happy day. (And the styrofoam can make a good substitute for popcorn)
One of the Best of Hollywood's Golden Time.......2007-08-03
This would be arguably the best film made during the so-called "golden years" of Hollywood. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Margaret Mitchell, the film won 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best adapted screenplay by Sidney Howard and Best Director, Vic Fleming, known more for his Oscar nomination as Best Director for the timeless, The Wizard of Oz.
I dislike using this word, but Gone with the Wind is your `quintessential' American film & story. Set wholly in the Deep South just prior, during and after the Civil War, historically the movie seemed to capture the tone, attitudes, ambience and sentimentality of the time period. Gone with the Wind managed to harness that "fighting spirit" that culturally the United States is known for...in terms of never giving up and life's essential contradictory combination of ugliness and beauty. More so, however, the film is a love story, a tragic love story and our changing times.
The last time seeing Gone with the Wind was by sheer fluke, playing at a small cinema across town. There is that captivating scene where Scarlett O'Hara (the beautiful Vivian Leigh) stands at the top of the winding staircase and sees for the first time, Rhett Butler, (Clarke Gable); the camera sweeps down the staircase for a close up at Gable's roguish smile, and still, after seventy years, the theatre filled with the sighs of women, young and old, over Clarke Gable's looks and charm - astonishing.
Sidney Howard won Best adaptation screenplay that year, (1939) but after the film was made and he was nominated, died on his farm, his tractor falling upon him. Howard was the first writer to win an Oscar posthumously from the academy...a brilliant writer.
There were many beautiful stars during the Golden Age but personally, Vivian Leigh as a child and now, so many years later, remains my ideal woman: feisty, strong, tragic and attractive till the end of her life. My other favourite role of Ms. Leigh's was in Tennessee Williams', A Street Car Named Desire, as another (tragic) character, Blanch...beautiful, extraordinary yet ultimately tragic.
One cannot write about this film without mentioning "mammy" (Hattie McDaniel) the black house servant that stayed with Miss O'Hara through it all...Hattie was the first black American actress in American film history to be nominated and win the Oscar for Best supporting actress in Gone with the Wind. As a child, her character always made me wish that she would be a family member in our household...no pretension, say's what she feels and so caring.
Although best viewed on the big screen, Gone with the Wind can be appreciated on DVD because it is that kind of timeless film that should never be forgotten.
Great - Revelatory - A must see? simply No........2007-08-01
"Gone with the Wind" is hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time, and not without reason I am sure, as it was not only a great drama, but a pivotal and exciting technical breakthrough. But the question when labeling a great movie is not only how much it resonates with old audiences and how it looks in the film history text book but how it resonates with audiences throughout time. As the 1900s progressed and social and political viewpoints became exponentially more liberal, "Gone with the Wind", the grand product that it is, feels in many ways - just as putrid and despicable as it doe great and epic. Its racism is explicit, its philosophical outlook pessimistic, its romance unromantic. Scarlett O hara, no doubt one of the great screen talents and beauties, plays a character who is thouroughly and utterly despicable, so much so that her last screen revelation that she actually loved Clark Gent after all, feels forced and unbelievable. Her attitude as a woman is courageous and admirable, but her attitude as a person is so wretched that no last dramatic lines could possibly redeem it. Take note that the movie suggests she still does not know who she loves by the end, as her last revelation is from the words of Ashley..."The answer is Tara."

Chris Rock's loose remake of 1972's Chloe In the Afternoon, the latter an entry in French New Wave genius Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales cycle, is a half-silly, half-starchy adult comedy about a buttoned-up money manager, Richard Cooper (Rock), whose staid life at home has worn down his sexual vitality. With two kids and a somewhat joyless wife (Gina Torres), Richard's mind wanders on the job, on the train, virtually anywhere a restless husband can spot beautiful, unattainable women. Still, no harm done, until old friend Nikki (Kerry Washington) shows up in his office, wanting his support and counsel and friendship every minute over subsequent weeks. The two stay out of the sack, which makes it possible for them to be honest with one another. Nikki criticizes Richard for being in what appears to be a loveless relationship, bled dry of passion. Richard calls out Nikki for being flighty, unwilling to commit to anything.
As the relationship wears on, Richard's world is upended, and the havoc takes a toll on his family life and productivity. It's at this point where the film, co-adapted for the screen and directed by Rock, paints itself into a corner, with few interesting alternatives for a way out of Richard's dilemma that feel authentic or, for that matter, funny. A Viagra-inspired visual joke (gee, hard to imagine what that could be) is a crass gift to audience members growing suspicious that Rock has lured them into a chick flick. A soul duet between Rock and Torres appears out of nowhere and throws the emotional balance off at a crucial moment. This kind of thing makes one wonder how seriously Rock took his own project, yet there are signs that he--a very funny and intelligent talent--has a different kind of movie in him. Jokes about Michael Jackson, race, and even racially-slanted comedy are peppered throughout I Think I Love My Wife, harmless distractions in context, yet suggestive of a different kind of movie satire waiting to come out of Rock. --Tom Keogh

A married man (Chris Rock) who daydreams about being with other women finds his will and morals tested after he's visited by the ex-mistress of his old friend. A funny and thought provoking look about the joy and pain of marriage and relationships.
Customer Reviews:
you people are crazy! this movie was great!!.......2007-09-13
i think chris rock did a great job in this movie. It was funny the whole chicken scene that was hilarious, just very well acted in my opinion. It has a positive message for every angle of a marriage,if you think about it.Just because Chris Rock is known for his comedic ability, doesn't mean all of his movies have to be full of comedy,he should have the right to broaden his acting career.
Blah.......2007-09-10
I love me some Chris Rock but this one just didn't do it for me. I watched this last night and it had its funny moments (like when he is dancing to Laffy Taffy) but nothing to gut busting. I just knew he was gonna get some after he took her out (the viagra scene) but nope. Everyone has already told you what the basics of the movie. It's worth renting but not worth purchasing. I don't know what her issues were with sex but its definately IMO the ending was just WACK!!
Depressingly funny..............2007-09-08
What's a marriage without communication, intimacy and sex? Nothing more than having a roommate. Since this movie does not delve into the wife's intimacy issues, I will review it from the male perspective. Basically, I would have liked to see Chris' character indulge in a little pleasure and paint the walls in Kerry Washington's draws. For real tho, enough with the guilt. Life is too short to be settling for unhappiness. How many times was the wife gonna say no to sex? Really. That issh was just depressing to watch.
In the end - I would have knocked Kerry Washington's boots from here to Albuquerque!!!
Enjoyed It!.......2007-09-07
I related to this film, because my husband and I have been through something similar, and, believe me, it's sheer hell. And though I know this was a comedy, not a serious film, it was taking on some serious issues, such as staleness in a long-term relationship and infidelity. And I wish it would have revealed more of the wife's side of the story and what led to the problems in the marriage. We mainly saw the relationship through Chris' eyes, who felt it was okay to continually lie to his wife and have a close, secret relationship with a member of the opposite sex.
I would have liked to see more conflict and interaction between husband and wife. I also wish that Chris would have come clean with his wife in the end and confessed his wrongdoing. Not to do so continues the deception in what was obviously an emotional affair--and nearly a sexual affair, an issue that was never addressed in the film.
A more serious in-depth end would have been great as well. Instead, it had a ridiculous singing scene.
It's good though that the film reminded viewers about what's truly important in life and how very easily problems can arise in even a good marriage.
Overall, I enjoyed this film and some of the scenes were funny.
[3.5]--Insightful honesty to the married man's dilemma .......2007-09-04
Well, Chris Rock and Eric Rohmer, together at last. Wait a minute, Rock and Rohmer? If the combination sounds strange to you, "I Think I Love My Wife" doesn't disagree. French New Wave director Rohmer defined his career making movies about conflicted, morally shaky men, and it's interesting to report that Chris Rock has managed to maintain some of the integrity of his film. Co-writing (with Louis C.K.) and directing "Wife," Rock is looking for a break from the broad comedies he's normally associated with, including his last directorial effort, the amusing 2003 political lampoon, Head of State (Widescreen Edition) This, the second film that Rock has directed, registers as a bigger squandering of his talent than all of the prior Bad Company (2002) (Ws), Dogma (Special Edition), and Madagascar (Widescreen Edition) combined.
"I Think I Love My Wife" tells the story of Richard Cooper (Rock), his wife Brenda (Gina Torres) and the other woman, Nikki Tru (Kerri Washington), who starts showing up at Richard's Wall Street office in clothes more suitable for a nightclub. We know right off the bat that Richard and Brenda, who enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with their two children in a New York City suburb, are not having sex anymore because Brenda is tired and disinterested. And we know that because Richard is bored and frustrated in his relationship. So, once hot Nikki enters the picture, we know that the plot will revolve around Richard. Will he or won't he (become another philandering husband)? This main point of the plot is one that may be viewed differently by men and women. The subtexts of the plot include, for me, the higher incidence of divorce in the Black community, the now-famous 42.4 percent of Black women who do not marry, whether single women respect the marriages of other women, many new narratives that make sex the central point and tool in relationships, and factors that make a man (or woman) leave their spouse and children. Others may think that Brenda needs to get with the program or definitely lose her husband, and that Richard is well within his rights to seek intimacy elsewhere since it is not provided at home.
This is obviously a lot of social context for a romantic comedy but Rock carries it off well, with stinging jokes, including ones about male fantasies, the sizes of women's panties and Viagra. The story is primarily told from Richard's male perspective, though, so we empathize most with him and see the women in his life through his eyes. We don't really get to know Brenda or Nikki for that matter, in the way that we get to know, for example, Renée Zellweger's character in Jerry MaguireWe don't hear Brenda's side of the story. She just seems wrong and probably playing herself.
Unlike Rohmer, Rock is more interested in a happier ending of sorts, but leaves the relationships in a semi-unfinished state. Had the film contained more layering up to this point, it wouldn't feel as blindsiding as it actually does. Rock sets up "I Think I Love My Wife" as something much more dangerous and insightful than it ends up being, and he seems unwilling to settle on a tone that would allow the film a chance to relax and gel in its own way. Despite its missing pieces, "I Think I Love My Wife" is an enjoyable, human flick. It reminds us that, as adults, our decisions are ours alone, and that we can't blame anyone--even our spouses or the spouses of other people--for what we decide to do with our lives.

Bernard Slade's smart, funny, and touching play about an adulterous couple who meet one weekend a year for 26 years is nicely adapted for the screen by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) in this 1978 film. The two-person story stars Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, both of whom are outstanding at conveying a rainbow of emotions over a quarter-century as life gives and takes away, and the world convulses with change. Mulligan brings taste and honesty to the film, and Alda and Burstyn give full, living performances. --Tom Keogh

Same Time, Next Year.......2007-09-05
I have not been able to watch it as my DVD has region restrictions (ie. I can't watch American/Canadian DVDs on my current Australian DVD player). It would be good in future if such a disclosure about compatibility was made about your products prior to contract of sale. Regards, Emma
Passionate ..and funny.......2007-05-26
Loved the historic timeline as backdrop to this movie.Alan Alda was perfect for this role! Wish it could be updated to the present time. The title song always gives me tingles....
LIKE A GOOD WINE - BETTER WITH AGE.......2007-05-14
My wife and I celebrate our 30th anniversary of marriage this year and remember this movie fondly from almost 30 years ago. We both agreed that every aspect of the movie seemed better than when we viewed it last. The story was easier to follow, the humour seemed more ironic and the music exceeded my expectations in it's placement within the movie. I was left wanting more.
A classic romance.......2007-05-13
Witty, philosophical, and an unlikely affair that happens once a year ... over decades. Delightful and sometimes a little painful. Ultimately, a classic romance (so now you know the ending).
Heritage House, Mendocino.......2007-05-07
I bought this video to view before we visited the inn where it all happens: Heritage House in Mendocino, CA. As we drove up the coast, we talked about the movie, the moral issues, the actors, and it gave us so much to talk about, we almost missed the view of the Pacific! Just a little dated, but Alan Alda is so magnificent in this that you can put
aside your critic's pen and just enjoy. His performance should have brought him an Oscar.

Annie Hall is one of the truest, most bittersweet romances on film. In it, Allen plays a thinly disguised version of himself: Alvy Singer, a successful--if neurotic--television comedian living in Manhattan. Annie (the wholesomely luminous Dianne Keaton) is a Midwestern transplant who dabbles in photography and sings in small clubs. When the two meet, the sparks are immediate--if repressed. Alone in her apartment for the first time, Alvy and Annie navigate a minefield of self-conscious "is-this-person-someone-I'd-want-to-get-involved-with?" conversation. As they speak, subtitles flash their unspoken thoughts: the likes of "I'm not smart enough for him" and "I sound like a jerk." Despite all their caution, they connect, and we're swept up in the flush of their new romance. Allen's antic sensibility shines here in a series of flashbacks to Alvy's childhood, growing up, quite literally, under a rumbling roller coaster. His boisterous Jewish family's dinner table shares a split screen with the WASP-y Hall's tight-lipped holiday table, one Alvy has joined for the first time. His position as outsider is uncontestable he looks down the table and sizes up Annie's "Grammy Hall" as "a classic Jew-hater."
The relationship arcs, as does Annie's growing desire for independence. It quickly becomes clear that the two are on separate tracks, as what was once endearing becomes annoying. Annie Hall embraces Allen's central themes--his love affair with New York (and hatred of Los Angeles), how impossible relationships are, and his fear of death. But their balance is just right, the chemistry between Allen's worry-wart Alvy and Keaton's gangly, loopy Annie is one of the screen's best pairings. It couldn't be more engaging. --Susan Benson
Description
Considered to be "Woody Allen's breakthrough movie" (Time), Annie Hall won* four OscarsÂ(r), including Best Picture, and established Allen as the premier auteur filmmaker. Thought by many critics to be Allen's magnum opus, Annie Hall confirmed that he had, "completed the journey from comic to humorist, from comedy writer to wit [and] from inventive moviemaker to creative artist" (Saturday Review). Alvy Singer (Allen) is one of Manhattan's most brilliant comedians, but when it comes to romance, his delivery needs a little work. Introduced byhis best friend, Rob (Tony Roberts), Alvy falls in love with the ditzy but delightful nightclub singer, Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). When his own insecurities sabotage the affair, Annie is forced to leave Alvy for a new lifeand lover (Paul Simon)in Los Angeles. Knowing he may have lost Annie forever, Alvy's willing to go to any lengthseven driving L.A.'s freewaysto recapture the only thing that ever mattered'true love. *1977: Picture; Actress (Keaton); Director; Original Screenplay
Customer Reviews:
Probably one of the worst movies that I've ever seen..........2007-09-04
Personally I don't like any of the films that Woody Allen has starred in. The only good film by Woody, would have to have been "Match Point". I have read and critics have felt that this film is by far Woody's best, it isn't. Winning the best picture award is beyond me! The performances were shallow.
After seeing the movie I caught a glimpse of what Woody Allen's personality is really like. His character, Alvy Singer is expressed as an OCD freak, on top of that he's extremely creepy. Diane Keaton won an undeserved oscar for this role. Why? I dont know. It isn't that great, I have seen mostly postitive reviews, however there has got to be someone who agrees with me. It isn't that good, and it isn't worth watching. IT is absolutely boring, and on top of that it has no sense to it. Basically the movie is about a self-concious man named Alvy, he falls for a woman who is just like him, and the movie just focuses on their on/off romance. It is indeed very bizarre. By the end of the film, I was relieved because it was finally over. There was no humor, and whatever humor there was, it was mostly dry.
So please if you are looking for a romantic comedy, try "Sleepless In Seattle" or "Hitch", this isn't worth watching.
"Is it my imagination, or are you just going through the motions?" .......2007-08-19
Not many filmmakers have chronicled the ups and downs of relationships as well as Woody Allen. Watching "Annie Hall" is to see the director-screenwriter in top-form.
New Yorker Alvy Singer's (Allen) break-up with Annie Hall (Diane Keaton) leads him to reminisce about their time together. He wonders if his efforts to expand Annie's horizons really was a worthwhile endeavor. Did those books, foreign films, adult education classes, and therapy sessions really lead to anything or did they just hasten the end of his time with her?
"Annie Hall" is the one film Allen has made that audiences can most relate to. Anyone who has even been in a relationship can see the universal truths he relates through his characters. Watching Alvy fruitlessly try to intellectualize his feelings for Annie not only proves to be a fertile source of laughs but also puts forth the notion that happy endings in life are dishearteningly elusive. Rarely has romance and misery been portrayed on screen in such an entertaining and sobering manner as in "Annie Hall."
A Classic on par with Casablanca.......2007-08-13
I've only seen this movie 17 times, and I am still "peeling the onion one layer at a time" of this deceptively simple adult romance. Incredible blend of joy and pain and "laugh-out-loud" silliness. Will never forget the scene of Woody trying to recreate the shared intimacy of boiling lobsters with Annie with a new, clueless girlfriend.
OK.......2007-08-05
This movie is rated # 31 on Newsweek Magazine's "Best 100 movies of the last century". I am collecting these. I would place this Woody Allen classic at # 75
1970's New York- AND L.A........2007-07-29
Hey, haven't I already reviewed this movie. No, sorry that was Manhattan another in the line of very witty Woody Allen movies. But the point is this it is the same subject that Woody addressed there even though chronologically Annie Hall came first by a couple of years and received the lion's share of kudos and awards. As virtually always Allen is intent upon commenting on New York life and its intellectual trends and the ups and downs of relationships, mainly with women. Here he adds a flourish by contrasting old New York (in the 1970's) to up and coming California as the cultural mecca of the American empire. And, as should be the case, New York wins. Add to that the perennial issue of Woody's struggle with `interpersonal' relationships and his angst-driven desire to understand the modern world and you have a very fine social commentary of the times. Needless to say Woody's love interest Annie Hall (as played by his then paramour Diane Keaton) keeps him hopping. As does an ensemble cast that works well together as foils for his ironic and savage humor. The only surprise in revisiting this film recently is how well Keaton played her role as an up and coming torch singer. Of course, I have always been a sucker for torch singers but that is another matter. Some of the humor may seem dated and very 1970's New Yorkish. Some of Woody's mannerisms and use of sight gags may seem like old news. But this is a film to watch or re-watch if you have seen it before.

A milestone of cinematic eroticism, The Story of O was an art house sensation in 1975, and it's still worthy of intelligent discussion. As with the controversial French novella by Pauline Réage, reactions to Just Jaeckin's sumptuous adaptation range from moral outrage to masturbatory indulgence, yet this remains one of the few sex films that stand the test of time (and a lot of academic study). Championed by practitioners of bondage and discipline and vilified by feminists, this metaphorical "love dream" (as Jaeckin has called it) follows the beautiful fashion photographer "O" (Corrine Clery) as she, like many gorgeously naked women before her, is "trained" for a seemingly satisfying life of love and discipline, her freedom sacrificed to the man (Anthony Steel) whom she willingly obeys. The debate whether Jaeckin's feminine-empowerment ending, which differs from that of the novella, justifies a story of humiliating submission is just one more reason why The Story of O endures. (Note: This DVD presents the 97-minute version of the film, edited by the director to improve pacing and not for purposes of censorship.) --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
soft core.......2007-09-11
Story of O, the movie, is a softish core redo of the Pauline Reage classic novel: Story of O. While it's fairly true to the book, it does make allowances in order to stay out of the XXX rating area. All in all, however, I'd call it a "must have" for serious collectors.
real bad.......2007-08-13
bad acting and a weak plot. they should have thoght twice about turning a great book in to a bad film.
The Story of O.......2007-07-09
Hot in a dominant sort of way. If this is what you want, then this movie is a 10.
No Star if it were possible.......2007-06-08
I was so disappointed by this purchase and this film. Being a fan of the book I was very excited to see how they translated it on to film. What I found out is that they didn't translate it at all. They LOOSELY followed the story line and took the liberty to add and change which in my opinion, changed the story all together. I threw this movie away and would not reccomend it to any true Story of O fan.
A bit clumsy.......2007-05-15
Somehow, I was expecting better acting, knowing this would be a major undertaking based on a controversial book. Sadly, the film just doesn't work. There's no arguing Corrine Clery's beauty but Udo Kier is completely miscast.

Director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show) tipped his hat to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s, and especially the most glorious of them all, Howard Hawks' Bringing Up Baby. Barbra Streisand plays a charming flake who distracts a self-absorbed musicologist (Ryan O'Neal). He's engaged to be married, but soon Streisand's character has him chasing after stolen jewelry and getting into one madcap fix after another. Bogdanovich, who is also a film critic, understands the engine of the screwball genre, and his loving revival of the form brings a smile, though it is not quite consistently inspired or funny. There are plenty of great moments, however, including a slap at O'Neal's own star-making vehicle, Love Story. --Tom Keogh
Description
Too many kooks spoil the comedy soup? Not when BARBRA STREISAND and RYAN O'NEAL lead a madcap cast (including screen-debuting MADELINE KAHN) on a zany quest that's like a classic screwball comedy - only screwier!
Customer Reviews:
Farce made boring........2007-09-12
I guess people will vote "no" on this review because they don't agree, but here's my opinion:
Screwball/farce comedy can be great. And director Peter Bogdanovich is capable of making them; just look at "Noises Off". But "What's Up, Doc?" doesn't even come close. The script is a mess, it starts out with no introduction whatsoever of either the plot or the characters (all of which are annoying). It goes on as an unfunny farce for about half an hour, then it slows down with romantic scenes between Streisand and O'Neal. Then the farce starts again, stopping again for two long ending sequences, one in a courtroom and one in an airport. All of the farce scenes are enervating instead of funny and uses every cliché in the book, such as construction worker's walking arund with a window glass, getting in the way of a car chase.
"What's Up, Doc?" is a very overrated farce. All of the gags are recycled and were made better in other movies.
What's Up, Doc?.......2007-09-11
This is absolutely hilarious. I loved it the very first time that I saw it in a theater, back in 1972; and still do. I enjoy it everytime that I watch it. It's a great comedy, and I would highly recommend it for anyone's movie library.
FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY.......2007-08-15
This is one of the funniest movies made. The chase scene is manic and the courtroom scene is a comic classic. So many familiar faces. This is a must see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bringing Up Babsy.......2007-07-21
Let me preface my review by saying I have an innate loathing of Barbra Streisand. My reasons are manyfold not the least her excreable left-wing politics. Nobody was more gleeful than when Trey Parker and Matt Stone tweaked her on "South Park". Giving the devil her due La Babs in "What's Up Doc" is...tolerable. I watched this film mainly because I'm a big fan of Peter Bogdanovich. I love his reverence for old movies. Here Bogdanovich pays homage to the screwball comedies of the thirties and forties. His reference point here seems to be Howard Hawks' screwball masterwork, "Bringing Up Baby". Bogdanovich is audacious in trying to evoke this classic and he mostly succeeds. The films strength is in the script's witty verbiage. It falters slightly in the tired slapstick that permeates the latter part of the film. There's a great cast that Bogdanovich surrounds the diva with. Ryan O'Neal proves to be an adept light comedian here. Bogdanovich later employed O'Neal to better use in "Paper Moon" in 1973. Only Stanley Kubrick with "Barry Lyndon" seemed to fully utilize O'Neal's talents. The support here is a dream with Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendleton, and John Hillerman. I particularly liked Liam Dunn in a small part as a harried judge. Not classic but a great homage to a style of comedy that will never go out of fashion.
Sight comedy at its very best!.......2007-04-23
For the first time in about 30 years I have seen this movie on DVD. I am glad I own a copy of this. Ryan O'Neil and Barbra Streisand are in simply hilarious in this 1972 comedy. Madeline Kahn was also a joy to watch in this film. Barbra can sing but she can really make you laugh with this! Enjoy!!

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) almost seemed to be importing the psychodramas of their marriage into this 1967 film (of course, the same was true of every film they made together). Adapted from Shakespeare's play and directed by Franco Zeffirelli (Romeo and Juliet) with his usual eye for sumptuousness, this version of Taming features a particularly boisterous, bawdy, fun performance by its stars. Composer Nino Rota--best known for scoring several of Fellini's best-known works--received a National Board of Reviews award for his vivid soundtrack. --Tom Keogh

Taming of the Shrew.......2007-08-24
This is a great movie. Liz Taylor and Richard Burton make Shakespeare understandable and fun.
A fun rendition.......2007-08-09
Baptista has two daughters: the eldest is Kate the cursed and beautiful Bianca. Everyone wants to marry Bianca but Baptista insists that it has to be Kate first. Suitors rivaling over Bianca have to find someone desperate enough to marry Kate for economic purpose.
One of the things that make this movie is all the money that was put onto the props and costumes. Of course with the big named actors and Franco Zeffirelli money for the program is naturally available.
Elisabeth Taylor can make squinty eyes and does not use her naturally squeaky voice. The film stays true to the story however it does not come near the professional and just a fun 1980 BBC version production with John Cleese as Petruchio.
The Taming of the Shrew.......2007-07-13
At the time this movie was produced, I had mixed feelings about it,until I went back and viewed it a second time. I watched Richard Burton and Elizabeth and looked at them as as husband and wife. The movie fell into place. They were not only husband & wife, but also, the worlds biggest lovers. Those two people worked good together. I found out later on that Elizabeth didn't know a lot of what happen to her was going to happen. That happen to be one of Richard Burtons little surprises for her. But, Elizabeth did tell us all how she felt about Burton at the end of the film. . . . . It was a wife speaking of her husband, whom she dearly loved. That's one of the films that will live forever.

How Fares Thee, Kate? Answer: Fine!.......2007-07-07
In Italy, Franco Zeffirelli is best known for his work in grand opera, and he brought all his experience in this larger than life art form to bear upon the two films for which he is best known, the 1968 ROMEO AND JULIET and the 1967 THE TAMING OF THE SHREW.
Scholars usually consider Shakespeare's THE TAMING OF THE SHREW to be among the playwrights lesser works, but it has been an audience favorite since its first known performance in 1594. Although many suitors beg for Bianca's hand, her widowed father is determined that she may not marry until her elder sister Katherine is wed--and Katherine is a hot tempered, willful, and vicious woman who makes life miserable for all who cross her path. Fortunately for Bianca, Petruchio is in need of money, and he is more than willing to marry Kate, no matter how resistant Kate herself is to the whole idea.
Shakespeare's original script has been trimmed here and there, and while purists may scream about it the result not only works for film, it also manages to capture the flavor of Shakespeare's language much better than any other film version of SHREW both before or since. And the look of the thing is beautiful: Zeffirelli brings his mastery of opera's larger than life visuals to bear upon the project, and the result is eye-popping production values, most particularly in reference to the costuming. Every cent spent shows on the screen.
Although she was a very fine screen actress, Elizabeth Taylor is not a name one would expect to find playing Shakespeare--but she carries it off in fine style, kicking, snapping, and snarling with tremendous panache in the first portion of the film, and then making Kate's "taming" seem entirely plausible in the latter portion. Unlike many later Shakespeare plays, SHREW is not greatly noted for its language; even so, Katherine's final speech is widely known and extremely memorable, and Taylor pulls it off with such credibility that one wishes she had done other classical roles as well.
Taylor's then-husband Richard Burton co-stars as the deliberately uncouth Petruchio, who sets out to tame a shrew and finds himself as much tamed by her as she by him. Burton, of course, was accustomed to the classics in general and Shakespeare in particular, and he plays with tremendous bravado. The supporting cast, which includes a young Michael York, is also very fine, and when all is said and done the 1964 THE TAMING OF THE SHREW is a tremendous amount of fun even if you don't like Shakespeare.
The DVD transfer is very nice. The picture has the occasional blemish, most often in the opening titles and closing credits, but on the whole it is remarkable, showing every detail of every set and every costume to fine effect. The sound is also quite good. Sad to say, there is really nothing in the way of bonus material, but the film is the thing, and Taylor, Burton, York, and Zefirelli do it up brown. More than just worth watching: worth owning.

The Taming of the Shrew.......2007-07-02
One year before his outstanding adaptation of the Bard's "Romeo and Juliet", Zeffirelli displays all his buoyant energy and stylistic flair in making this venerable old comedy fresh and exciting. With the exception of Albee's "Virginia Woolf" made the prior year, on- and off-again spouses Taylor and Burton were never better teamed. A young Michael York and crafty Cyril Cusack stand out with veteran Hordern in a stellar supporting cast. Here's another Kate worth kissing.

Dashing Errol Flynn is the definitive Robin Hood in the most gloriously swashbuckling version of the legendary story. Warner Brothers reunited Michael Curtiz, their top-action director, with the winning team of Flynn and Olivia de Havilland (Maid Marian) and perennial villain Basil Rathbone as the aristocratic Sir Guy of Gisbourne, and pulled out all stops for the production. It became their costliest film to date, a grandly handsome, glowing Technicolor adventure set to a stirring, Oscar-winning score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The decadent Prince John (a smoothly conniving Claude Rains) takes advantage of King Richard's absence to tax the country into poverty but meets his match in the medieval guerrilla rebel Robin Hood and his Merry Men of Sherwood Forest, who rise up and, to quote a cliché coined by the film, "steal from the rich and give to the poor." Stocky Alan Hale Sr. plays Robin's loyal friend Little John (a part he played in Douglas Fairbanks's silent version), Eugene Palette the portly Friar Tuck, and Melville Cooper the bumbling Sheriff of Nottingham. Flynn's confidence and cocky charm makes for a perfect Robin Hood, and his easygoing manner is a marvelous counterpoint to Rathbone's regal bearing and courtly diction. The film climaxes in their rousing battle-to-the-finish sword fight, a magnificently choreographed scene highlighted by Curtiz's inventive use of shadows cast upon the castle walls. --Sean Axmaker

SWASHBUCKLING CLASSIC.......2007-08-12
Want real movie magic and great old star power? This gorgeous classic has it all in spades. Errol Flynn exudes charisma and swaggering confidence as Robin, easily showing why he's simply one of the greatest movie stars of all time. And he's backed by a who's who of Warner's star roster, with Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains as the personification of ruling class reptillian villainy! And it's all in lucious technicolor with a rousing musical score. An all time classic, beautifully restored for DVD.
It don't get no better........2007-08-09
This is Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland at their best and frankly, in my opinion, Hollywood at its best. Just a great escape and a lot of fun -- well-acted and well-directed. Beautiful, opulent sets and clothing. A pure delight!
Memo to Warner Brothers: Put this on the big screen for 70th.......2007-07-20
One of the best movies ever made for all the reasons so well written by other reviewers. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see this film on the big screen in honor of its 70th anniversary? If it can be done for for "Dirty Dancing," why not for a film that is a part of American film history and a joy to watch? I think the studios (including Disney)are missing a great opportunity in not re-releasing films as they once did. I remember seeing GWTW in the late 60s, the first "Star Wars" trilogy and "Grease" in the late 90
