Although I thoroughly enjoy the music on Pavarotti & Friends For War Child, I could not play the CD as purchased on either of my CD players because it was in a 5.1 format. A friend copied it onto a disc I can play.
I feel that CD's purchased through your company should be in formats able to be used be the masses, instead of a select few that are able to have state-of-the-art machinery.
Other than that, I am extremely happy with your service (I was a first-time buyer), and with the CD as a whole. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars An all-star presentation of life and survival!.......1999-07-12

Pavarotti and Friends for War Child is the second but not the last, of Pavarotti's efforts to make visible that which we would prefer to ignore. From his opening prayer of Holy Mother, he pleads for compassion. Eric Clapton's blues-trained voice melds effortlessly and makes us also want redemption and grace. Interestingly placed on the same theme is Joan Osborne's St Teresa. Joan sings of looking from the depths of desolation to a possible savior. Euro-pop tunes featured are poignant studies in our humanity and most are worth our listening. Pavorotti's collection ends with Live Like Horses-- Elton John's tribute to the life of Versace. He asks that we kick down our fences and move on! to live free and noble as does our equine friend. Thank you Pavarotti. Your wisdom and far-reaching voice beacons and then gently educates us. Our lives-- as the War Child's, WILL continue and evolve.

During the grim, glum cacophony of images and sounds that constitutes the first few minutes of The Arrangement, a self-loathing advertising wizard (Kirk Douglas) with a stultifying marriage and a career focused on selling "Zephyr, The Clean Cigarette!" impulsively hits upon a spectacular method of committing suicide. Viewers would have been spared two hours of further flailing if he'd succeeded. Instead we get a combination psychodrama and Bildungsroman--at once crashingly obvious and fragmented to the point of incoherence--that attempts to frame the betrayal of the American Dream through the guilty/proud machismo, professional frustrations, and oppressive ethnic heritage of a very unappealing guy.

At least credit writer-director Elia Kazan, adapting his own bestselling novel, with honesty: the guy is, essentially, he himself. The once-great filmmaker hoped to reunite with Marlon Brando on the project; he wound up with Douglas, whose career-long image was the guy with the indomitable spirit no matter what ("I'm Spartacus!"). But dismay over Douglas's miscasting--which led to the miscasting of Faye Dunaway in a mistress role based on and intended for Barbara Loden--doesn't excuse the total mishmash. Scenes begin in the middle or break off without warning; some characters are introduced portentously, then abandoned or beaten as one-note Symbols. The technique is a mélange of ugly, puerile effects, including still photos absurdly sprung to life and a daydream sequence studded with BIFF! BAM! POW! comic-book titles. There's even a desperate dive into self-quotation, a snippet of Kazan's 1963 America America to establish that a character barely seen in The Arrangement is the aged version of the youthful protagonist of that exultant masterpiece.

For the record, the cast includes Deborah Kerr as Douglas's wife and Richard Boone as his terminally Old World dad. They didn't deserve to come off as badly as they do. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Kirk Douglas and Faye Dunaway in master moviemaker Elia Kazan's hard-hitting story about an adman's attempts to rebuild his shattered life after suffering a nervous breakdown. Year: 1969 Director: Elia Kazan Starring: Kirk Douglas, Faye Dunaway, Deborah Kerr

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Film Whose Time Has Come........2007-02-25

Panned and patronized at the time of it's initial release, Elia Kazan's adaptation of his best selling book THE ARRANGEMENT plays much better now than it did in 1969. Made after a 6 year hiatus from filmmaking at a time when movies were enjoying unheard of freedom due to the demise of the production code, THE ARRANGEMENT clearly shows that Kazan was still a director to be reckoned with. The basic premise was nothing new. A highly succesful businessman (Kirk Douglas) suffers a mid-life crisis and attempts suicide. How he and the other characters deal with the aftermath make up the rest of the story. Kazan has always been an actor's director and the film provides a showcase for the young Faye Dunaway as Douglas' mistress who gets him to reexamine his life but wants out to be with someone else. Deborah Kerr in her last major film appearance is superb in the difficult role of the wife who tries to understand what Douglas is going through but doesn't want to give up the rich lifestyle she's become accustomed to. Strong support is given by Hume Cronyn as the family solicitor who has plans of his own and from Richard Boone in a rare non-Western role as Douglas' ailing father. His slide into dementia is both heartbreaking and terrifying. Marlon Brando had originally agreed to play the lead but bowed out allowing Kirk Douglas who really wanted to work with Kazan to step in. While not stage trained like the other principals, he acquits himself well in an emotionally as opposed to a physically demanding role. The combination of raw emotions, alternating points-of-view including black humor, and touches of surrealism was ambitious then and still is today (think AMERICAN BEAUTY). The movie is not without its flaws. It runs too long and is occasionally sloppy in everything from editing to make-up but the powerful writing and intense performances make THE ARRANGEMENT provocative filmmaking nearly 40 years later. Called everything from a harrowing emotional ride to a self-indulgent mess (see the Amazon summary) it is ultimately for the home viewer to decide (my 4 star rating indicates where I stand). Kazan will always be a controversial figure because of his HUAC testimony in the 1950's but his greatness as a director cannot be denied and remains captured on film for all to see.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Flawed Search for Truth.......2007-02-19

Elia Kazan has touched me deeply in many of his films. The Arrangement is not the most effective of Kazan's films, but he certainly tried very hard with this one to reach towards some important truths. I really dislike much of the technical side of this film (the poor process shots, the somewhat stilted acting, the sometimes quite silly sets poorly lit way too bright), but there is something moving about the film, rooted in the raw exposure of what looks to be his own soul. Imperfect films that reach so high should be respected.

3 out of 5 stars Convoluted At Best.......2007-02-18

I don't remember why I pre-ordered The Arrangement, and I have no idea how well it was received when it was first released in 1969, but one viewing told me that this film was riding only on the name recognition of director Elia Kazan and the star quality of the leading actors.
One can only describe the plot here as convoluted at best. It took me three viewings to fully grasp what it was Kazan was doing here and even then there were a lot of unanswered questions. No doubt, the acting by Kirk Douglas, Faye Dunaway, and Deborah Kerr is very good, but I can't help but think that even they wondered about their parts.
I won't rehash the plot, but it seems that Douglas' character is profoundly disturbed and that everything he has to deal with after his wreck somehow sparks vivid memories of prior experiences. These memories spring immediately to life then fade back to reality adding to viewer confusion over why a particular episode is occurring. When Douglas' character was committed involuntarily to a mental hospital, all semblance of a coherent plot fell apart.
This movie is definitely not for everyone. If you like a strong psychodrama and can pay close attention to and can unravel this Gordian Knot of a storyline, then you may find the Arrangement very satisfying.
Though Douglas' Eddie Anderson is not an appealing character, one can't help but feel a certain amount of sympathy for him as he hits the skids. The last shot of him as he watches his father's casket lowered into the ground says a lot. Then there is the look of quiet contempt Deborah Kerr gives Eddie's mistress Faye Dunaway (Gwen) as she is lurking on the edge of the group gathered for the funeral. Its a powerful scene for sure.
There is nothing at all upbeat about The Arrangement. The somber score of David Amram brackets the movie. At the beginning, its notes are a harbinger of what you are about to see, at the end it confirms the viewer in the tragedy he or she just saw. Watch this one only if you yourself are not on the edge.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Having A Breakdown SO YOU BETTER LISTEN TO ME!!!.......2005-05-31

This would have to be one of the worst movies that I have ever seen and I have sat through a lot of turkeys in my lifetime. It concerns an advertisng executive played by Kirk Douglas. Eddie is having a very bad Nervous Breakdown following an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Then he procedes to harrangue EVERYBODY he meets about his messed up life as if anybody could care less. Eddie is also carrying on an illicit affair with Gwen , played by Faye Dunaway. When Eddie is making love to his wife played by Deborah Kerr he is thinking about Gwen!!! I realize that millions of married guys all over the world do this but that don't make it right as the man once said. After about half an hour of watching this movie you get very tired of Eddie's whining and Ms. Dunaway makes the very intelligent observation that "the screwing I'm getting is not worth the screwing I'm getting". Gee. I felt pretty screwed after hiring this piece of junk from the Video Store for $3.50!!! I give this movie 5 stars because I kind of like Faye Dunaway although she has appeared in better films than this one.

2 out of 5 stars Slow and boring.......2003-11-12

Maybe I just did not get it. I sat through this thing because I have been a fan of Miss Dunaway's for quite some time. It is hard to sit through and makes little sense. Kirk Douglas is old and is messing around with Dunaway behind his wife's (Deborah Kerr) back. Douglas rethinks his life and changes it. About the only reason to watch this movie is to see a young post-Bonnie and Clyde Faye Dunaway.

Chris Smither's foot-tapping, high-groove guitar style and blues-inflected songs have kept him in the top ranks of singer/songwriters for four decades. On this DVD lesson he shows you how he uses his alternating thumb and syncopated two-finger picking, along with a variety of left hand techniques, to create the rhythmic drive and distinctive harmonies that distinguish his unique arrangements. No Love Today ( The Fruit and Vegetable Song ), a rich evocation of old New Orleans street life, is one of Chris' most requested songs; Drive You Home Again, a moody minor-key blues, is the title song of one of his best-selling CDs; Bob Dylan's titanic Visions of Johanna gets a new treatment; the humorous Get a Better One features infectious single note riffs against a steady bass groove; Leave the Light On is joyous, straight-ahead fingerpicking in open D; Lightnin' Hopkins' "spooky" Blues in the Bottle is played and taught on both 12-string and 6-string guitars. Chris' wry humor and deep understanding of traditional styles help to make this an outstanding guitar lesson for all fingerpicking enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of songs that belongs as part of a course..........2007-06-02

If you love acoustic blues, or if you are an acoustic guitarist who would LOVE to learn to play acoustic blues, this DVD is a valuable part of your lessons.

Wisely, Homespun has set for an entire course to bring you through months and months of lessons, via DVD, to teach you acoustic blues. I love taking these courses because Homespun uses two images on the DVD, right and left hand, move very slowly, but also give you not only what a finished product could look like, but encourage you to explore and develop your own style. Here is the course, from start to finish:

    1. Easy Steps to Blues Guitar DVD 1 and 2.
    2. The Blues Bag 2 DVD set (learning more songs!)
    3. Easy Steps to Blues Guitar Jamming DVD 1 and 2
    4. The Fingerpicking Blues of Mississippi John Hurt

(all these are here at Amazon)

This is a course of months of learning, depending upon what level you are at, but ends up at some high level guitar playing! What is fun about The Blues Bag is that you can slowly learn a song, and then play it completely----but, if you are a more advanced player, there is SO much more you can do with it (as the DVDs show).

This is like a college syllabus of blues guitar 101 through graduation! The first DVD introduced me to the blues on acoustic guitar, was easy to use, and a lot of fun. DVD began the challenge. Bag of Blues is like having the reward of applying what you've learned.

best advice: get the entire course, A-Z, and enjoy! I've not found a better production anywhere.

Learn five classic blues songs, especially arranged for intermediate-level guitarists who want to explore exciting new styles and repertoire. Mary Flower's clear, step-by-step instruction will make these pieces fun to play for anyone with some prior knowledge of blues fingerpicking techniques. Mary starts off with Leroy Carr's Papa's in the Housetop, first strumming the basic chords to get you quickly into the tune. She teaches you how to play the melody on the high strings, then adds harmony notes and finally finishes the arrangement with a hot New Orleans bass line. She then launches into equally detailed instruction for Bessie Smith's Backwater Blues, with moving basses and unusual harmonies; Memphis Minnie's Black Rat Swing, played in both standard and open D tunings; Jimmy Oden's Going Down Slow, a 12-bar shuffle/groove blues, using a combination of Charlie Patton and Jimi Hendrix licks;" and New Orleans Hop Scop Blues, another great Bessie Smith ragtime blues. Mary Flower's arrangements are challenging, fun to play and filled with musical ideas that will inspire you and add great songs to your blues repertoire.

      Description

When you hear Peter Huttlinger on recordings or in concert it's no mystery why he won the National Fingerpicking Competition in Winfield, Kansas, or why he is quickly becoming a powerful force in the acoustic guitar world. Pete's picking is clean, soulful and, at times, blazingly fast. Whether he's playing his arrangement of a classic pop tune or one of his own compositions, listeners are inevitably startled by what they hear.

Pete starts with the lyrical Lennon/McCartney tune "And I Love Her," played on a nylon string guitar. This richly textured but relatively easy piece will get you set up for the challenges that follow.

Next, Pete takes the classic Steely Dan song "Josie" and builds up a powerful rendition complete with moving bass parts, jazz chord formations and a funky groove that doesn't quit. Then it's on to "Brown Bomber," Pete's fingerpicking tour de force that will give you an incredible workout while you learn cascading runs across the entire range of the fingerboard.

Switching to a flatpick and DADGAD tuning, Pete teaches "Catch and Release," the title tune to one of his popular CDs and one that is rich in a variety of ear-catching guitar sounds.

As you've come to expect, Peter Huttlinger's teaching style is clear, methodical and personable. He imparts musical knowledge and playing tips while going through these show-stopping instrumentals. This lesson will provide months of intense study and dramatic pieces to play.

It's a thrill to listen to Pete Huttlinger, and even more so when you can watch him play, which is why I love the DVD versions. One of the best guitarists you will ever hear!
This disk is aimed at finger-style guitarists or wannabees like me, but anyone who loves guitar music won't be disappointed either.

4 out of 5 stars Solo Accoustic Guitar - Peter Huttliger DVD #1.......2006-11-06

DVD had some good tunes on it. I preferred the songs presented in the 2nd DVD by Peter Huttlinger in this series, due to the fact that it seemed to have a few more songs at the intermediate level of play. The instruction on this DVD was clear, organized and to the point. The written music notation and tablature was written in an easy to read manner. The paper music score provided with the DVD contained several songs and was small enough to easily fit into a guitar case. This DVD has songs that would be playable by advanced players and one or two songs that would be playable by an intermediate level player.

Things calm down a bit as you learn Pete's somewhat easier "Chet-style" fingerpicking tune Darcy's Guitar. Then you're off and running again, this time with an in-depth teaching of Pete's most requested tune, the showstopper, The Santa Rita Connection.

McGuire's Landing in DADGAD brings us back to a mellow Celtic mood. Tommy in the Morning, written by Pete for fellow fingerpicker Tommy Emmanuel, and the lovely hymn On Eagles' Wings, played in James Taylor's evocative style, round out this terrific DVD lesson.

5 out of 5 stars Huttlinger: The Master.......2007-01-09

If you are looking to see and hear one of the world's great guitar players up close, this is a good place to start. Huttlinger is one of those rare players whose incredible technique doesn't compromise the beauty and emotion of his music. Too often players with that much technique lose the plot but he uses his skill set to turn the guitar into a mini orchestra. He is also a fun character and even more fun in person.

I would say this DVD is good for anyone who loves guitar but it will be very useful for players who are at least at the intermediate level. The real payoff will be for more advanced players who will find a tresure chest of great ideas for making great music.

      Description

If you're among the millions of fans who love the signature sound of the Kingston Trio and want to create it on your banjo, this fun and easy lesson is for you! Playing his long neck Vega 5-string, veteran Kingston Trio member George Grove teaches the banjo style, originally created by Dave Guard, that has long been instantly recognizable throughout the world.

George's mantra is "Keep it simple," and his series of "fake frails" enable you to get a strong, rhythmic sound with easy-to-learn strumming techniques. Add a note that he calls "the toggle," and you get the unmistakable Kingston Trio sound that has influenced countless players and groups through the years.

You'll learn a variety of skills that can be used to enhance any song you choose to play: song intros, accents and syncopations, chord progressions, parallel thirds, picking patterns and rolls, and other left and right hand techniques.

Before long you'll be playing and singing along to classic folk hits "Tom Dooley," "M.T.A.," "A Worried Man," "Three Jolly Coachmen," "Hard, Ain't It Hard," "Corey, Corey," "Early Morning Rain," "Coast Of California" and "Rolling River."

5 out of 5 stars This DVD inspires........2005-07-12

I have played the guitar for a while and have just started with the banjo. I have been listening to the Kingston Trio for over forty years. George Grove presents the material starting from easy, progressing to intermediate, and then gets into things that are way out of my league. Everything makes sense and it sounds just like it should; everything passes my sanity test. His instruction of what he calls "Fake Frailing" is just perfect for the beginner. His demonstration of "Early Morning Rain" is just incredible for the more advanced player. ( I will be working on that one for a while.) He keeps the material light using ample amounts of wit and humor.

My limited background of the guitar was all that was needed to get me well into these lessons. For someone starting out cold, some kind of very basic banjo primer would be required. This DVD is perfect for someone who is familiar with the Kingston Trio and is familiar with the basics such as how to tune the banjo and make basic chords.

Wow, I would love to see a companion DVD that demonstrates Kingston Trio guitar technique as well.

      Description

These seven traditional Christmas songs and carols have been specially arranged so that even an early-intermediate guitarist can play them, but more advanced players will have much to learn as well.

Drawing on his experience as one of America's most popular guitar teachers, Happy Traum has carefully chosen each classic song for its "playability" as well as its timeless beauty. The songs range from fingerpicking versions of old-English carols to a bluesy African American Christmas spiritual. Once mastered, these guitar pieces will become favorites season after season for years to come.

The beauty of this lesson is that you can make each tune as simple or complex as you want to. The easiest of these arrangements will provide wonderful pieces to learn for the holidays coming up, but you can also continue your studies at a more advanced level. Each song will provide important insights into different aspects of the guitar, including fingerstyle technique, harmony lines, moving basses, alternate chord shapes, use of the entire fingerboard, variations on a theme and many other insights to help make you a better guitarist, regardless of what songs you play.

Here's what you'll be playing: "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "What Child Is This?" ("Greensleeves"), "Pretty Little Baby," "Silent Night," "Twas On A Night Like This" (Italian Christmas Carol) and "Jingle Bells."

5 out of 5 stars Homespun is the best...........2007-03-25

Great collection of Christmas songs for guitar. The DVD is clear, upfront, and the close ups of the left and right hand are invaluable. It is like paying for expensive guitar lessons that can be used over and over. What a great product for the Summer months! Learn the songs and be ready for Christmas to entertain friends and relatives. This is a level 2, which means that you should already be familiar with the basic chords. Happy Traum's personality comes across warm and encouraging on DVD. Homespun has built an excellent reputation for excellence.
