Looking for plenty of sex, violence, and lowbrow comedy? If you are, you could do a lot worse (or is it a lot better?) than to visit Club Dread, a boldly wretched excuse for broad comedy perpetrated by the Broken Lizard troupe--the same guys who brought their potty-mouthed brand of lunacy to bear on 2002's Super Troopers. That alone should serve as ample warning or invitation, depending on your tolerance for way-too-casual sketch comedy, stitched together with an emphasis on big, gross laughs and enough female frontal nudity to give Girls Gone Wild a run for its money. It all takes place on Coconut Pete's Pleasure Island, where Pete (Bill Paxton, slumming it with infectious abandon) holds court while scantily clad vacationers play crazy games (life-size Pac-Man, anyone?) and provide easy prey for a slasher on the loose. Ah, but there's the rub: Is this schizoid movie a comedy or a horror flick? It's both... and neither... and the bloodletting is surprisingly extreme amidst all the poop and fart jokes. Of course, that won't stop Club Dread from finding its audience. We know you're out there
and you know who you are. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Broken Lizard is back?and this time the crazy comedy troupe that brought you Super Troopers is taking you on a trip so outrageously fun?it?s murder. Welcome to Coconut Pete?s Pleasure Island, a tropical, tequila-soaked vacation resort where high-spirited fun soon takes a deadly turn?leaving the island?s hilariously inept staff to battle a machete-wielding maniac as they fight to survive another day in paradise. Filled with sidesplitting humor, scary slasher scenes, and plenty of bikini-clad babes, Broken Lizard?s Club Dread is a comedy to die for!
Customer Reviews:
this is a good movie!.......2007-07-03
dispite what you may have heard in the other reveiws this is a good movie.
most people were expecting a bloody slasher flick. but this movie is more
of a comedy than it is horror. it also has almost all of the characters from super troopers. it is not as funny as super troopers but still has
some laughs in it. if you are a person who likes movies that are hated by other people you will love this movie! trust me!
Stupidly Funny .......2007-05-09
Love this movie. Goes great with Supertroopers and Beerfest. A nice trifecta!
Meh... .......2007-04-03
You can't ever be too hard on spoofs, because they are written to be horrible mockeries of whatever genre they are slamming. That being said, 'Club Dread' is only a moderately entertaining movie.
Horrible story line, bad accents, and tons of cheese fill this movie to the brim. Of course its all intentional, but I think that some measures could have been taken to make this a little better. For one, the killer's name is Machete Phil, and personally, I think at least Dr. Phil woud have been better. But the name aside, this spoof is pretty low on witty humor which could've been more abundant. There where only a couple of parts where I actually laughed aloud, and considering 'Super Troopers' was pretty good, I had expected to get a little more than a couple of laughs.
This is overall a mildly entertaining spoof, but I'd suggest even the Scary Movies over this.
Falls a bit short but still some great scares and laughs........2007-03-27
I wanted to give this one a try after seeing Super Troopers, another Broken Lizard film. While Club Dread falls short compared to the comical impact of Super Troopers, it does have some hidden gems and may appeal to most Broken Lizard fans. These guys are just the kings of brainless humor.
I'm a fan of horror/comedies and this one does an okay job. The scares work, and there are a few parts where you'll actually find yourself inching toward the edge of your seat, but not necessarily on the edge of it. One reviewer mentions Shaun of the Dead in their Club Dread review. There is no comparison. In no way does Club Dread reach the caliber of Shaun of the Dead, which is one of the funniest, and scariest horror/comedies I've ever seen.
Club Dread is funny in some parts, scary in some parts, and I will watch it again (someday) because it is entertaining. But it is not one of the best horror/comedies I've ever seen, and can't be lumped in with the likes of Shaun of the Dead. Club Dread is campy, dumb, full of sexual innuendo and drunk partiers. It works on its own level. Come on, we're talking about Broken Lizard here.
The drawbacks of the film are Jay speaking in a faux British accent while wearing a dreadlock wig. I was expecting a more caribbean sounding accent, but after a while it grew on me and was just as dumb and comically effective as the rest of the stuff.
I've seen better, but I've seen much worse too.
Hey, Broken Lizard Can Do No Wrong in My World . . ........2007-01-05
The problem with this film is that it falls into a narrow, narrow film niche: horror-comedy. Many horror fans will loathe the fact that the film parodies common tropes of the genre . . . many comedy fans may not "get" the parody itself. Thus, you have the wildly mixed reviews that you find here.
Personally, I found this work hysterical (but I love goofy films like "Idle Hands," "Evil Dead," and "April Fool's Day"). Bill Paxton portrayal of a Jimmy Buffet "wannabe" is spot-on!! Moreover, it was refreshing to see Kevin Heffernan fearlessly tackle a character completely different from Farva: a spiritual masseur! Still, Jay Chandrasekhar steals the show not merely because he is one of the most handsome men in existence, but because his character of Putnam is RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY!!
If you don't "get" why "Shaun of the Dead" was so uproariously funny, this film may leave you confused and disappointed. Still, you should buy it for the Pac-Man scene alone!!! And, no, it's not "Super Troopers" . . . BUT WHAT IS??! It is just a silly film . . . exactly what it was intended to be!! On that level, it succeeds!!
Just give this film a chance:) (And buy "Beerfest" too!!)

Funny in a brain dead sort of way.......2007-03-20
These are your above average pothead humor films. Not the best but far from the worst. When you need a cheap laugh & nothing else good is on, these will lighten up the mood.
Broken Logic.......2006-08-28
I don't understand how people can find these movies funny.
I enjoy a crude comedy as well as the high-brow stuff, having been raised on ANIMAL HOUSE and CADDYSHACK and AIRPLANE!
But the Broken Lizard movies are just lame and laughless. I realize that humor is very subjective...but these movies are horrible. I laughed once in SUPER TROOPERS (that's one more laugh than I had for THE WATERBOY or any Kevin Smith film). I've caught most of CLUB DREAD on cable and, though the blonde chick is smokin' hot, the movie just lays there like a dead teen in a slasher film.
Their latest film, BEER FEST or something, is being advertised as a worthy successor to SUPER TROOPERS, CLUB DREAD and Broken Lizard's last masterpiece, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD.
At least they're consistent.
If You're Looking For A Laugh............2005-12-09
This is a great 2 pack DVD deal. Both of these movies are hilarious, and they are must haves for any comedy fan.
In "Super Troopers," a gang of misfit state police, who constantly screw around on the job and therefore get little accomplished, find themselves in competition with the local police department. In order to save their jobs and clear their "good" names, the goofy troopers must solve a crime, filled with murder and drugs before the local cops beat them to it. This movie is comedy at its finest, and you'll be sure to find yourself repeating the rediculous one-liners.
"Broken Lizard's Club Dread" contains a similar cast of characters (mostly because the creators of Super Troopers also starred in, and directed this movie) but is instead, a horror spoof. Imagine "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" meets "Scary Movie," and you've got Club Dread. A serial killer runs rampant at the sleazy Coconut Pete's Coconut Beach Resort, located on a booze-soaked island, and the staff of the resort frantically try to cover up the madness while searching for the killer's identity. This horror comedy will no doubt have you screaming with laughter.
I reccommend both these films highly, and what better way to buy them than together?
