Amazon.com essential video

Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking, and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features. But be cautious: this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd. --Tom Keogh

How good-looking is the DVD restoration of Disney's popular animated film? Take a look at the serviceable but dull film clips incorporated in the plethora of extras and compare them to the vivid gorgeousness of the film presentation. This "special edition" also adds a 90-second song ("Morning Report") that originated in the lavish stage musical. To Disney's credit, the original theatrical version is also included, both restored and featuring two 5.1 soundtracks: Dolby Digital and a new Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix, which does sound brighter. As with the Disney Platinum line, everything is thrown into the discs, except an outsider's voice (the rah-rahs of Disney grow tiresome at times). The excellent commentary from the directors and producer, originally on the laser disc, is hidden under the audio set-up menu.

The second disc is organized by 20-minute-ish "journeys" tackling the elements of story, music, et cetera, including good background on the awkward Shakespearean origins at Disney where it was referred as "Bamlet." The most interesting journey follows the landmark stage production, and the kids should be transfixed by shots of the real African wildlife in the animal journey. Three deleted segments are real curios, including an opening lyric for "Hakuna Matata." Most set-top DVD games are usually pretty thin (DVD-ROM is where it's at), but the Safari game is an exception--the kids should love the roaring animals (in 5.1 Surround, no less). One serious demerit goes to the needless and complicated second navigation system that is listed by continent, but just shows the same features reordered. --Doug Thomas

Description

Disney's THE LION KING SPECIAL EDITION features an all-new song, "Morning Report," and never-before-seen animation, giving you even more of this award-winning masterpiece -- the greatest animated adventure of all time. An unforgettable story, breathtaking animation, beloved characters, and Academy Award(R)-winning music (Best Original Score, 1994; Best Song, "Can You Feel The Love Tonight") set the stage for the adventures of Simba, the feisty lion cub who "just can't wait to be king." But his envious Uncle Scar has plans for his own ascent to the throne, and he forces Simba's exile from the kingdom. Alone and adrift, Simba soon joins the escapades of a hilarious meerkat named Timon and his warmhearted warthog pal, Pumbaa. Adopting their carefree lifestyle of "Hakuna Matata," Simba ignores his real responsibilities until he realizes his destiny and returns to the Pride Lands to claim his place in the "Circle of Life." Now extensively restored and remastered -- experience THE LION KING like never before, from its magnificent musical opening over breathtaking African vistas to its emotional climax. The all-star vocal talents -- including Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Ernie Sabella -- rip-roaring comedy, and uplifting messages of courage, loyalty, and hope make this timeless tale entertainment for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Great Animation.......2007-08-28

The Lion King was a great movie. Well written, great animation and voice overs were done in a great manner. The whole concept of the story with the struggles and the good times should remind everyone that there are always hard times in life and that everyone can overcome them.

5 out of 5 stars The "Lion" roars for Disney.......2007-08-23

A grand and majestic Disney creation, "The Lion King" broke box office records as the biggest grossing animated film at that time. And deservedly so. From its stirring opening of a sunrise seemingly "opening the curtain" to reveal the animal kingdom honoring a future king (set to an emotional African score, no less)--to a brilliant computer-generated wilderbeast stampede segment which sets the stage for murder, betrayal, banishment and redemption--to an even more stirring climactic confrontation as the future king (Simba) regains his throne as rightful ruler--"The Lion King" is a triumph for both Disney studios and animation itself.
The artists at Disney create some of the most gorgeous landscape here, as well as portray the animals in all their graceful splendor. Tim Rice & Elton John contribute one of the best musical scores for a Disney film as well, with the song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?" becoming a Top 40 hit.
The deep, commanding voice of James Earl Jones embodies the character of Mufasa, a great king who is killed by his treacherous & resentful brother Scar (voiced with droll malevolence by Jeremy Iron) who has his eyes on the throne. Young Simba is handled by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, then a rising child star with the "Home Improvement" TV show; his adult counterpart is played with ease by Matthew Broderick. Every Disney film has a comedy relief; in this case, there are FIVE. Whoopi Goldberg and Cheech Marin play Scar's dim-bulb of hyena henchmen (including a mute, but cackling third named Ed), while Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabala lend their distinct comic voices to Timon & Phumba, a buddy-buddy meerkat and warthog, respectively, who befriend the exiled Simba. Robert Guillame does a fun turn as an odd but wise "guru" figure in the form of a baboon named Rafiki; and Rowan Atkinson gives a nasally comic performance as Mufasa's right-hand man (or is it bird?) who takes his job seriously.
As with any good Disney film, this one has it all: good story, good animation and good voice talent.
Definitely one of the best from Disney; I'm glad to own it on DVD!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any youngster's library.......2007-07-03

This classic story is filled with important life lessons presented with appropriate viewer language. My kids have been introduced to how all life is connected on this planet. It is a great resource for kids to associate how life works between species. The family story is also important. All of this packaged with great songs and enchanting performances from the actors.

propably one of the best animated motion pictures ever. I hated the addition of the new song, but I believe that was directed towards the younger audiences. Many extras, most i liked to watch

5 out of 5 stars A great Disney movie, for kids AND adults!.......2007-05-12

This is a great story and it's told with very good music intertwined with the dialogue. "The Lion King" and other Disney animated films are good entertainment keeping me occupied on my daily treadmill walks. I find that I enjoy them as much as I did when I was a child.

The Lion King 1½ is an ingenious sequel that retells the original film's story from the perspective of best pals Timon the meerkat (voiced by Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa the warthog (Ernie Sabella). Anyone who has wondered how this odd couple met will find out here, beginning with Timon's flight from home following disgrace and his chance encounter with the sweet but lonely Pumbaa. With the arrival of young Simba (Shaun Flemming), The Lion King's familiar tale is reborn via a fresh angle, fleshed out by returning characters Rafiki the wise monkey (Robert Guillaume), Shenzi (Whoopi Goldberg), and Simba's love interest, Nala (Moira Kelly). While the retooled narrative proves a novel experience, The Lion King 1½ is really a vehicle for voice actors Lane and Sabella, whose comic performances are shamelessly, broadly funny. Matthew Broderick, Julie Kavner, and Jerry Stiller are also in the vocal cast. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good and hysterically funny.......2007-05-24

I didn't expect much from this movie, and really only got it for my son. I was so glad that I watched it with him, though. During a couple of sequences I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe, which is pretty rare for me.

As far as repeat viewings, my 4 1/2 year old son, who only likes about 1/3 of the movies he sees enough to merit a second viewing, watches this constantly, and I definitely don't mind watching it with him again and again.

If you're looking for a movie with the drama and emotional impact of The Lion King, this isn't it. It's much lighter overall, and enjoyable in a different way.

4 out of 5 stars The circle of life.......2007-03-21

First came the Lion King. Then came Lion King 2; Simba's Pride. Then Disney stepped back a bit and made this movie, which retells the original Lion King, except from the viewpoint of Timon and Puumba, the Meerkat and Warthog. Funnier than either Lion King 1 or 2, it strips away the romance and drama and is pure comedy; a combination of slapstick, wit, irony, sarcasm and bad singing. More than the other two movies, this is perfect for kids as there are no scary moments, and nobody dies. All told, a great way to spend an hour+ of time.

2 out of 5 stars BAD in-between movie!.......2007-03-13

Why put this out... don't waste your money... it's a narrative of the first lion king. not intertaining to him or i. Have watched this DVD ONCE in the 2 yearsish I've had it.

1 out of 5 stars RUINS THE FIRST FILM! I hate it........2007-03-12

A few interesting concepts here and there, but crappy and terribly done execution to the point of utter stupidity. No offense to the actors, I really like them, it is not their fault. Avoid this and stick with Lion King films 1 and 2.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly wonderful!.......2006-08-26

Normally, one wouldn't expect a "straight-to-video" film to be watchable more than once. However, LION KING 1 1/2 is funny, witty, and adds some great new music to the Lion King repertoire. Many of the original voices are back; they join together to tell a fun, new story that focuses on what Timon and Pumbaa were doing while the action of the first film was taking place. For those of us who know the first Lion King quite well, this movie is all the more enjoyable, as the pieces fall into place, and we see how the two fit together. I recommend it as an entertaining way to spend about 90 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Allen does it again...............2007-07-22

Tim Allen goes from the jungle of Madison Avenue to a rain forest jungle to get divorce papers signed so he can marry again. He discovers he has a son and decides to show him his world in New York. The fun begins when "jungle boy" pees on the door of the airplane before they even land. Things are a lot different for the boy in his father's world. They both find out that "home" is where the boy belongs and a twist ends the show with love and family being the most important things no matter where you live.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent WIDESCREEN DVD.......2007-06-15

It's amazing how many people write a review for a DVD they've never even purchased. There are all these other people out there who give it 1 or 2 stars because "it's a great movie but it's full screen." If you were to actually watch this movie on this DVD you would see that, yes, it reads full screen on the back but it is WIDESCREEN. I watched this on a huge TV and I have surround sound, and while it did not play in surround sound, I barely noticed a difference, it really did not bother me. The picture quality is fine as well, the only screw-up I see is that it is marked Full Screen and it is widescreen - and that's only annoying if you LIKE full screen. It lacks bonus features, however, many DVDs do - all the bonus features come on special edition collector's sets these days that cost more than just a full- or widescreen version. So if you love this movie but are hesitant to buy it after reading reviews stating that it is awful because it's full screen and the sound is terrible, you're missing out. Clearly many of these past reviewers who gave this movie bad ratings didn't view this disk. This is a wonderful, memorable, funny movie, great for kids and family. I would not hesitate to recommend this DVD.

TIM ALLEN DOES AS USUAL A WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE. THIS IS A GREAT FAMILY MOVIE UNLIKE SOME OF THE SEX AND VIOLENT FILLED MOVIES OF TODAY. IGNORE TH BAD RATINGS SOME CUSTOMERS GIVE THIS MOVIE. IT IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. ITS NICE TO BE ABLE TO WATCH A MOVIE THAT THE ENTIRE FAMILY CAN ENJOY.

1 out of 5 stars Martin Short and the kid from Detriot Rock City have Chemistry........2005-07-24

That chemistry does not make up for Tim Allens selfish profomance and the plot sucked. I hated the part when the kid crawls on top of the statue of liberty. That would not fly to day, The police and the govnment would think he is a terroist and kill him. I thought the humor was bland and it is a stupid crapy movie and I hate it.

Whereas the original Tarzan tells the story of a man raised by gorillas who learns to bring together the human and animal worlds, Tarzan II is a prequel, of sorts, focusing on a chapter from Tarzan's childhood where he realizes he is not an ape and sets out to discover his true identity. The young misfit runs away from his loving mother, Kala (voiced by Glenn Close), and wanders up the Dark Mountain to come face to face with the monstrous Zugor. But all is not serious in this 72-minute boondoggle; there is Disney's usual foray into frivolity by way of a few wisecracking sidekicks--a couple of gorilla brothers named Uto and Kago, and their nettlesome Mama Gunda (voiced by Estelle Harris, a laudable choice). Despite the star-studded voice cast, there is a sense of re-tread ground here, and the story (loosely based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' distinctive tale) shows signs of formulaic Disney. Nonetheless, Phil Collins' trio of original songs livens the pace to make the effort a short-lived smile. (Ages 6 to 14) --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars Why the midquels, disney??? Why???.......2007-04-19

First off, the animation was very nice. But pretty is as pretty does, right? The story is pretty weak and fairly uninteresting, like most disney DTVs today. It's about Tarzan's boyhood. Like I said, it's not too bad, but it's not very original either.
This is one of disney's first so called "midquels" that later spawned nightmares Bambi 2 and Fox and the Hound 2. I know that some don't feel that way (especially about Bambi 2 apparently), but, if you ever ask those that do like them, the answer is usually that they would have preferred a real sequel. What's with that, eh? Anyway, I'd rent this, there is too much of a chance that you might not like it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Disney sequels.......2007-02-20

I was about to say that Tarzan 2 was the best Dinsey sequel out there but I can't really say that when Toy Story 2 exists. Plus the Alladin sequels weren't that bad either. In Tarzan 2, young Tarzan struggles to in keeping up with the Gorillas. He almost dies and his mother thinks he died. He gets ready to tell her otherwise when he overhears some say the mom is better off now without him. So he sets off on his own to figure out what he is and what species he belongs with. He meets a grumpy old gorilla who scares other creatures off by making them think he's some scary creature. Tarzan promises he won't tell everyone the creature is just an old gorilla if he helps him figure out what he is.

The result is a harmless, cute and charming film that won't make you forget the first one but will still entertain you. Plus it helps that Phil Collins is back doing the songs once again. His songs help enhance the film a lot as well. I think this one could've actually have been released in theatres it was so well done. I mean come on Disney does need to go back to releasing more traditional animated movies in theatres. But they also need to be more original with them. I mean this was good but there's way too many sequels these days. I mean a sequel to the Hunchback of Notre Dame ? What's next Sleeping Beauty 2: The Second Nap ? For one I wouldn't mind seeing them make movies based on their cartoon series. I mean who wouldn't want Gummi Bears to be brought back with a few movies by Disney ? Or how about another Ducktales movie ??

3 out of 5 stars Shall I rank it 2 stars or 3??.......2006-04-14

I watched this movie when about 1 week after it was published. I thought it was good when I first watched it, but now I don't. However, this movie was not very bad, I just don't like it as I used to do.
The story and every plot was funny, and they made me laugh. But by all accounts, it was not a very excellent movie, it was only a comedy. Maybe I was affected by the remarks from many friends, then I watched this movie again, in order to find some defects of this movie. Needless to say, somewhat, I found.
Firstly, the story was not very good except it was funny. It was not like the original, it wasn't touching, none of the plots could make me feel warm or make my eyes wet. And I couldn't find the theme of this movie, sometimes I felt it was a little confused. What worse, sometimes I felt it strayed from the point. But it doesn't matter, maybe there was no point.
Secondly, I thought the tableaux of this movie were colorful, but not very smooth. The best of the tableaux was, at the end of the movie, young Tarzan swang through the jungle, everything on the backdrop was beautiful and natural. However, it's still not good enough.
Finally, I thought the music in this movie was not so good, though I couldn't say it was terrible. I doubted that whether Disney lazed, and Phil Collins did not so good as he used to do. Only "Who Am I" was good after a fashion. And the scores were not as good as the original's.
Generally speaking, this movie was much better than "Tarzan&Jane", but couldn't be compared with "Lady and the Tramp-2: Scamp's Adventure".

2 out of 5 stars this game is worst.......2006-03-27

After a delightful opening, in which jungle boy Mowgli (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) recaps much of the original Jungle Book in a sprightly shadow puppet show, The Jungle Book 2 swiftly turns into a carbon copy of the splendidly swinging previous movie. After his old pal Baloo the bear (voiced by John Goodman) draws Mowgli away from the man-village, with all its work and rules, and back into the glorious indolence of the jungle, the movie repeats--in a less energetic form--an encounter with Kaa the snake, the cockney vultures, a musical number at the monkey's palace, the menace of Shere Khan the tiger, and even the song "The Bare Necessities." The only difference is that there's a girl named Shanti along for the ride; sadly, her character is so bland that it doesn't do much to justify the movie's existence. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Disney's wildly popular THE JUNGLE BOOK comes a thrilling, all-new animated feature film. The jungle is jumping again as Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and the rest of your favorite characters return in the fun-filled musical adventure THE JUNGLE BOOK 2. "It's a work of such charm and imagination it should enchant children of all ages" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Mowgli (Haley Joel Osment) has been living in the village among the humans. His new life includes his little stepbrother, Ranjan, and his best friend, Shanti, but the man-cub still has that jungle rhythm in his heart, and he misses his old buddy Baloo (John Goodman). When Mowgli wanders back into the wild for some swingin' fun, he soon finds Baloo isn't the only one waiting for him -- the man-eating tiger Shere Khan is lurking in the shadows and planning his revenge. If he is to defeat his nemesis, Mowgli will need the help of both his old friends and his new family. With fresh new renditions of "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and a host of original toe-tappin' tunes paired with classic Disney animation, THE JUNGLE BOOK 2 is sure to delight the entire family.

1 out of 5 stars Jungle Book 2 Did not Have To Be made Limited Issue Is 100 Times Better.......2006-09-18

Disney keeps goming out with sequels to the best DVD's ever made. The Jungle Book Limited Issue Is the best movie ever made.My Grandson watches it all the time. Its made for the child also the adult like me. I bought Jungle Book 2 totally dissapointed in the dvd. I did not like it at all I returned it.Its a horible movie for children: Disney stop ruining our excellent dvds.I give this dvd A -1

1 out of 5 stars Movies like this make you ask, WAS THIS SEQUEL REALLY NECCESSARY.......2006-04-01

The original Jungle Book was inventive, whitty, uplifting and charming. The characters had depth and a beauty that in its time was unique and wonderful. The original Disney Jungle Book story was told with great feeling that was a source of fun and inspiration to me growing up as an autistic child. I can honestly say the original Disney Jungle Book movie was the only movie I loved that also touched my heart.

Jungle Book 2 is is just a very badly executed attempt at recreating the awesomeness of the The original Disney Jungle Book. Jungle Book 2 fails in all attempts to recreate any of the magic of the original Disney Jungle Book. Jungle Book 2 is endlessly bland overall filled with nothing at all to justify wasting a moment of your life watching. You will be better and more deeply entertained for hours watching newly poured cement dry compared to watching a moment of Jungle Book 2. Don't Waste your time wacthing this garbage it is not worth anyones time or money. It gets one star only because the amazon system does not allow me to post zero stars or better still stars in negative numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Execellent Jungle Movie.......2006-01-26

I watched Jungle Book 2 movie at the behest of my two young daughters aged 5 and 9. What a thrill. I enjoyed the excellent sound tracks particularly "Jungle Rhythm". The special effects were excellent and the dancing by all creatures great and small was rhythmic and great to watch.

The kids love the movie and they watch it often. This is good entertainment for the kids (and the young at heart)that I recommend to any parent.

Though half the cast has changed from the first George of the Jungle, the silliness and self-referential jokes remain--for example, in an unusual display of professional honesty, Christopher Showerman explains to the audience that he's the new George because the producers were too cheap to re-hire Brendan Fraser. While a mean lion (voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan, The Green Mile) connives to take over running the jungle world, George's wife Ursula (Julie Benz) is imperiled when her mother and her former fiancé (Thomas Haden Church, returning from the first movie) scheme to bring her back to civilization through kidnapping and hypnosis. Though George of the Jungle 2 aims its combination of goofy humor and computer-generated animals at kids, the camera spends a lot of time ogling Showerman's buffed body. --Bret Fetzer

Description

"Watch out for the tree-slammin', elephant-callin' action -- all the fun of the original and more!" (Mark S. Allen, UPN-TV). The wild adventure and comedy that families and critics went bananas for continue with everyone's favorite characters in GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE 2. When we last saw George, he and his bride Ursula were living in wedded bliss in the peaceful jungle. Unfortunately, all this is about to change. Scheming mother-in-law Beatrice Stanhope is not about to let her daughter and grandson hang around with the klutzy King of the Jungle forever. In an elaborate plot, she teams with Ursula's obsessive ex-fiance Lyle to hypnotize Ursula into leaving George and turn his jungle to mulch! That's when all vines lead to Las Vegas. There, George, Ape, Shep, and Tookie-Tookie must rescue Ursula, and then swing back to save the jungle from Lyle's bulldozing bullies. You'll go ape when these jungle jesters come together for irresistible all-new family entertainment.

My Grandson loves this video. Watches it over and over. Great value and fast shipping.

3 out of 5 stars simple and with high spirit.......2007-01-11

Chistopher Showerman is worthy of watching this film, not merely handsome he is more for gorgius, beatiful adjectives. And he is funny, not a bad choice considering he is in the place that was of Brendan Fraser, a very versatil actor ,very talent one.I said to me when film started in Brazilian tv; hey this is not Brendan and a second later this was the first joke of this film .Not very special to see in theaters is as many movies a very good choice to see at home with all family.

1 out of 5 stars George of the Jungle 2.......2007-01-04

This sequel is not worth purchasing. Stick with the first one.

5 out of 5 stars I only give it 5 stars for T.H. Church .......2006-09-09

The replacement George is nothing like the B. Frazier in the first movie. What's with the goofy smile?! I liked the first movie, so did my kids. You can tell in this one that the Ursula and George actors are really trying to be the Ursula and Georgia from the first movie - but they lay it on too thick...syrupy sweet thick. Ugh! I only watched it because I happen to like Thomas Haden Church, who was better looking than George! Tom Church, please do more serious films!

2 out of 5 stars Horrible Features.......2005-07-12

This movie was a whole lot worse than the first one(I actually like the first one). You can tell the animals are computer animated. The actor that plays George is terrible! The only thing good about it is the plot which actually sticks to the story line of the first one.

2 out of 5 stars Zeppelins And Other Rigid Gasbags!.......2006-03-06

Clyde Beatty was the "world's greatest animal trainer" and this film makes that point clearly. These serials have been combined and divided into a dizzying array of presentations over the last seventy years, but the bottom line is the Clyde (and his annoying assistant Sharkey) trains animals and goes into the jungle to find animals while trying to keep a romance going with Cecilia Parker over her father's oft-voiced objections.

The shorts (or the film made from them) are comically overacted by people who were more used to the exaggerated physical gestures used in silent movies. Beatty is a particularly bad actor, but these are about the animals and adventure. My favorite feature is the subplot about the ship Captain taking his daughter away on a sailing ship because Beatty hadn't yet proposed to her, foundering on an island full of wild animals of widely disparate types, and Beatty and his rescue mission pursuing them in a dirigible (proving that Beatty isn't the only rigid gasbag onscreen, at least) which breaks in half but leaves Beatty's half floating along before crashing on the same island as his beloved and the Captain. How is that for convenient?

The animals are beautiful. I love big cats in particular, and there is an amazing assortment of them on display here. Some of the male lions are particularly impressive. Beatty is fearless, and there are many genuinely scary moments, as safety standards weren't quite what they are today. Some of these scenes are difficult to watch, as some of the animals appear to have been genuinely injured, and the fighting (both inter- and intra-species) is obviously real and is very fierce. This would never be made today; the methods are far too inhumane. That isn't a direct criticism of the filmmakers or stars, mind you, as these methods were considered quite acceptable in the 1930s.

People who like serials from the 1930s will like these shorts (or the composite films made from them), but other than the animal scenes, a little goes a long way. The acting is wooden and the plot is hackneyed, but this was considered quite pioneering and daring at the time, so it is interesting as a historical artifact.

3 out of 5 stars Lions, and Tigers, and Bears (and leopards and more).......2006-01-30

I had never watched a movie quite like this one. The animal scenes were quite real and the animals appeared to have been injured in the process. I am a big fan of documentaries, but knowing that the scenes where predators were in close proximity to herbivores was staged offended even my usual open-minded sensibilities.

This movie was a serial, and you need both volume 1 and volume 2 to have the whole thing. The plot is simple. Animal trainer Clyde Beatty (playing himself) heads off after girl friend Ruth Robinson (Cecilia Parker) after she and her father disappear during an expedition. Clyde takes a dirigible across the ocean, but the dirigible encounters a storm, as can be seen by cheesy animated effects.

The dirigible lands on an island. It just so happens that Ruth and her father are on the same island. Sharkey (Warner Richmond) keeps trying to sabotage Beatty's efforts, and he lands on the island by parachute, unbeknownst to everyone else. Sharkey finds Ruth's father and the treasure, and is looking for the captain of the ship so that he can leave the island. Unfortunately for Sharkey, his character meets the stereotypical ironic ending.

In the end, the good guys get the critters, the jewels and the babe. Isn't everyone happy?

This movie is quite anachronistic. We know that no islands exist with the variety of animals shown in this movie. Also, the predator density was too high to be sustained. Lastly, this island had African lions and North American mountain lions, which is a good trick in any era. On the other hand, if you can suspend your common sense and knowledge of the world, and you can ignore the cruelty to the animals in the movie (though the cruelty shown was not considered cruel in that era), this movie is an interesting artifact of another era.

3 out of 5 stars Watch It For The Animals..........2005-07-27

Sure, the story is wacky and the characters are weak, but hey, those animals are grrreat! Clyde Beatty spends all of his time training and performing with his host of lions, tigers, leopards, and bears. So much so, that he doesn't even notice when his girlfriend leaves with her father on a quest for a legendary island, inhabited by both Asian tigers and African lions! Soon, Clyde takes off in a derigible, only to wind up on the same mysterious island! Enter the wild animals (yep, even bears) and Clyde's hypnotic gaze. Forget the dopey story and just enjoy this jungle-circus! Watch for an ultra-young Mickey Rooney (he's the kid with the dog) at the beginning...

3 out of 5 stars Jungle Boogie.......2004-11-15

The first chapter of this serial is definitely the highlight, as Clyde Beatty's jealous assistant Sharkey (Warner Richmond) tries to kill him by letting an untrained, savage lion into Clyde's training area. Hey, Clyde eats untrained, savage lions for breakfast, so to speak, and soon has the lion juggling bowling pins while it balances on a tightrope and whistles "Camptown Races". Metaphorically speaking.

Anyway, things happen fast, so strap yourselves in. Clyde's girlfriend Ruth (Cecelia Parker) accompanies her father, a sea captain, and his crew in search of a lost island full of treasure. Well, they find it, all right, but the island - which was once part of a giant trans-world land mass that apparently included North America, South America, Asia, Australia, and Patterson, New Jersey, is home to wild lions, tigers, bears, three-toed sloths, gorillas, goats, alligators, and sex-crazed scooter stingers, all of which will kill ya quick as look at ya.

Clyde, his pal Larry (Syd Saylor, who is terrible), and Sharkey the Jealous Assistant take a dirigible cruise, and the dirigible crashes on the same lost island. Lucky for everybody, because Clyde has a "hypnotic stare" that can glare down animals and force them to his bidding. Talk about your game face. After 12 chapters of running around willy-nilly, the treasure is in hand and they all live happily ever after.

Clyde Beatty was no actor, but he looked really good in jodhpurs, and how many people can you say that about? The cast is very interesting, especially if you love the Andy Hardy pictures, as Mickey Rooney has a bit part (chewing the scenery something fierce) in the first episode, and Cecilia Parker (Ruth) played Andy's big sister in the series. Edward LeSaint, Ruth's seafaring father, appeared in roughly 3,000 movies, nearly all of them as a kindly doctor or a judge (that's him on the bench in the Three Stooges' short DISORDER IN THE COURT).

Special mention must be made of the "lost city" that's in a big cavern on the island. It's actually a "lost house", and it appears to be made of stucco and drywall with metal doors with rivets in them. I mean, it is unlike any "lost temple" you've ever seen; it seems more like an abandoned haunted house in an Our Gang film, right down to the cobweb-covered chandelier. Of course, it DOES have an alligator pit full of hungry gators (who nearly, but alas do not, chew up Syd Saylor). It also has a killer gorilla roaming about, and if you watch National Geographic specials or GORILLAS IN THE MIST and you think the great apes are benign, peaceful fellows, well, forget it. This one isn't, but I suspect that he must have a thorn in his paw or hemorrhoids or something. Or maybe he just caught a glimpse of Saylor's act and he's enraged. In any case, although the ape is unbilled, I suspect he's Charles Gemora, for no reason other than he looks like Charles Gemora, and I mean that in a professional way, so if any of Mr. Gemora's descendents are reading this, please don't think ill of me.

This is a fun serial, Mr. Saylor notwithstanding, the Alpha print is okay, and while there are a lot of better serials available on DVD, you'd be hard pressed to find a better one with a leading man who can stare down tigers.

5 out of 5 stars Shame of the Jungle.......2004-10-23

Classic violent sexual cartoon. So funny and great one liners. A must have for bad movie fans. I wish that I could get this on DVD. Voices of Bill Murrey and James Belushi. Tarzoon and June living in the jungle. June is kidnapped by phalic guards(big animated penises) and Tarzoon must rescue her from the evil queen that wants her hair. Must see to believe. If you liked "Fritz the Cat" you will love this one.

2 out of 5 stars The title says it all.......2003-01-25

This Tarzan spoof may have been racy back in 1975, but it looks tame today. Normally this sort of "raunchy" humor would have me lying on the floor clutching my stomach with tears of laughter streaming down my face. I didn't laugh once.
An American edit of a French cartoon with American voiceovers; the "plot" centres on Shame's efforts to rescue his girlfriend June from the movie's anatomically incorrect villain, who resembles a bald Cruella De Vil. However there is one memorable scene of marching male members (that's correct), complete with army helmets! It's safe to presume I'm not ruining anything by saying they don't fire bullets. The 10 second sequence showing the creation of these soldiers is the only part of the entire film which is mildly funny but the ending is original, to say the least and is solely what earns the movie an extra star.
There are also a couple of memorable scenes involving an enthusiastically amorous chimp. John Belushi and Bill Murray made their film debuts here (or rather their voices did). But in the long run you're better off watching some SOUTH PARK reruns instead.

2 out of 5 stars Cut beyond recognition.......2001-10-20

Originally saw this film by it's release title: "Tarzoon: Shame of the Jungle" and the cuts and edits required to remove the lead characters name in addition to the cuts made to make this have a R rating render this a slim shadow of the originally funny (albeit tasteless)animated comedy. This pale version of the original is basically worthless and difficult (if not impossible) to follow.

      2 out of 5 stars Cut.......2000-04-10

This is a cut version of the original. Still funny and entirely cleaned up. If your looking for the original uncut version dont buy this one. If you liked it the first time but dont want the raunchy stuff its okay.
