Product Description
For Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta), life is cold, grey and full. As it has been ever since a family tragedy shook her world. Between the constant bickering in her half punjabi, half catholic household, her grandmothers temper, looking after her little sister and brother and helping her mother (Jaya Bachchan) deal with the family's financial troubles - Naina has no time for things like parties, fun or herself...she is twenty three, going on fifty. She is serious, she is boring. Enter Aman Mathur (Shah Rukh Khan). Like a whiff of fresh air, he moves into their tiny Indian neighbourhood to take it over. Helping others resolve their problems, face life's little challenges, Aman has all the answers. Much to Naina's irritation, he insists on interfering in her life too... Aman pushes Naina into doing things she would never dream of doing. He nags her till she learns to smile. He conspires with friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), and eligible Manhattan bachelor to help find her happiness. Kal Ho Naa Ho is the story of Aman, Rohit and Naina's journey together. How they discover themselves, find the courage to love and come together to celebrate life.

Ah, Bollywood, how I love thy cheesiness........2006-12-14
Kal Ho Naa Ho (Nikhil Advani, 2003)
Here's a tip for aspiring filmmakers out there: make your debut film one of the best they've ever seen, and they'll love you forever. At least, that's the way Nikhil Advani saw it, and he put heart, soul, and sweat into Kal Ho Naa Ho to come up with the best picture he could. And man, did he do a fine job of it, within the boundaries of the Bollywood social scene.
I have to admit, I love Bollywood. There's something about taking a silly, predictable storyline and making it BIG that just appeals; maybe this is what made the American musical so popular for a while, but Bollywood productions understand BIG even better than American's did in the fifties, with massive synchronized dance numbers, casts of thousands, plot twists everywhere (even when the plot has all the depth of your average mudpuddle), and lengths that the average American viewer would consider extreme for weighty epics.
Kal Ho Naa Ho (Tomorrow Might Not Be) exemplifies every last one of these traits. It is shallow, predictable, silly, bombastic, and just plain BIG, and I loved every second of it.
Naina (the aptly-named Preity Zinta) is at the center of this complex spiderweb of stories that have to do with her family's failing cafe, her best friend's attempts to find a beau, her grandmother's terrible singing, her friend Rohit's (Saif Ali Khan) inveterate womanizing, and, of course, the difficulty of creating, spontaneously, huge dance numbers (sometimes while drunk). Into the chaos walks Aman (Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan),who will be instantly recognizable as The Agent of Change(TM) to anyone who's read more than three pieces of magic-realism fiction, and starts playing all these plot threads like a harp. Except that while Aman is convincing Rohit to finally declare his long-suppressed love for Naina, she's falling for Aman, while Rohit's family are all convinced that Rohit is having an affair with Aman. What's a boy (well, okay, a girl and two boys) to do? The answer's obvious: sing!
You can see every twist and turn coming from miles away; the main point of suspense during the movie was me asking myself how they were going to be able to keep all this going, with resolutions coming as thick and fast as they do, for three hours. They do manage it, of course, because size does matter in India in the opposite way it does in America; where Miramax's Weinstein brothers are well-known for their "ninety minutes is too long" approach to filmmaking, it ain't a Bollywood extravaganza if it ain't three hours or more. So you have to wonder how many of the subplots were added simply as filler. Not that it matters. It's all rather like looking at Tammy Faye Bakker-- you know it's probably scary under all the makeup, but it's so glitzed-out, and has such a fascinating personality, that you can't help but be charmed. ****
A Great Bollywood Film with Heart.......2006-01-03
The story told here, complete with the songs, was truly touching and full of heart. The acting was excellent, especially, as always, Shah Rukh Khan. Khan is a master of drama, pulling off both intensity and humor with a naturalness that rivals the best of both Bollywood and Hollywood.
I will admit that there were parts of the film that were over the top (the Hindi version of Pretty Woman); but that's part of Bollywood style and you must accept Bollywood on its own terms. All of the rest of the music stayed with me, in a very good way, long after the movie ended. Trust me, you'll find yourself playing them back!
This film has so much to teach--about the importance of friendship, about faith, about love and sacrifice and the importance of feeling every moment directly and with a full heart, for as the theme song itself declares--tomorrow may never be.
This movie rocks.......2004-10-06
This movie is a masterpiece in the making. Shot in the United States, this movie has elegance, beauty and the ability to move even the toughest of hearts. It is a must-buy movie..
must see Bollywood movie.......2004-07-06
Kal Ho Naa Ho was the first Bollywood movie that I ever saw, and still remains my favorite (along with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge). Americans can appreciate the sometimes silly but always enjoyable pop cultures references, Indians can revel in the lush, elaborate cinematography, and everyone can love and adore Shah Rukh, Preity and Seif. This movie drew me in and made me laugh out loud, then break out into tears in the next moment. All of the songs are catchy, including the wise and beautiful title song. Everyone in the film is perfectly cast, and although the movie is a typical 3 hours long, it's well worth watching.
Incredible Movie Very Nice.......2004-05-25
One of the best hindustani movies. Shah Rukh is at one of his shinning moments since Kabhie Khushi all the way till Dilwale Dulhania. Preity Zinta also very beautiful and talented and with the essence of Saif Ali Khan this movie will really touch your heart. Its a must see movie.

Fun for First Time Hindi film viewers.......2005-11-13
Spoilers ahead!!!
The plot is fairly simple. We have a love triangle with a twist. Boy loves girl, girl loves another boy, other boy loves girl. The twist comes when everyone finds out that Aman (Shah Ruhk Kahn) is dying. He has a bad heart. He knows this and pushes Naina away from him and towards her long time friend who has fallen in love with her.
There are several subplots: Naina's family is in financial trouble. Jennifer, (Naina's mom) and her mother in law always fight. There is a family secret that no one knows. There are acutually many subplots so you have to pay attention. American viewers who haven't seen any Hindi films may find it difficult to get used to some things. They use buckets of those glycerin tears which look terrible. This movie is a musical as most Bollywood films are. Some of the artists tend to overact and movements are sometimes over-eggerated and jerky. Hindi films tend to be much longer than american films so be cautioned. By the way, there are about 200 dancers in the film. The musical numbers usually tend to be dance numbers as well. Beware of the subtitles. They move pretty quickly.
There are 6 songs in the film, not a lot for a Bollywood movie. The title song, Kal Ho Naa Ho is the hit song and it's a lovely tune. My other favorite is Maahi Ve. It's the time for Disco, another of the films tunes, is just silly.
As for the film's star, Shah Ruhk Kahn, I don't think he is a particularly great actor but he's got a good screen presence. His looks don't hurt him either. He's very cute. He's also a very capable dancer.
Kal Ho Naa Ho is constructed to be a tear jerker (A Bollywood staple. Most of their films have the same formula). It is and oh so obvious. It's colorful and energetic and funny in places. It's also meant to be a comedy. It is funny, even in some places it's not supposed to be.
This makes a good first film because it was filmed in Manhattan. It's nice to see places you know even when the film is a foreign one. The more I see this movie the more I like it. I can overlook it's flaws and concentrate on it's main point. Kal Ho Naa Ho (tomorrow may never come). How true. If you'd like to see something different please buy this. I won't give away the end. See it for yourself.
Excellent.......2004-05-13

A romantic, comedic tearjerker.......2004-04-10
(...)The movie is sentimental, but not terribly so. I actually felt for the characters instead of thinking of how cheesy the plot is. The acting, especially from Sharukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, and Jaya is fantastic. The plot is a very serious, tragic one, but is speckled with lighthearted, intelligent humor. The score is amazing, and the songs are good as well, though in my opinion the latter could have been much better. The plot also deviates from the predictable Bollywood formulae that has cursed Indian movies of late, and introduces some new perspectives on life and love. Still, perhaps my most favorite thing about this movie was the amazing cinematography and professional overall look. Definately worth watching.

Direct From the Sofa: My Popcorn-filled Review.......2004-12-27
I found this movie very good. It is funny but sad at the end. It is fun to watch and the sort of thing you can watch again and again, and not get bored of it. The actors are good, and some of the jokes will have you on the floor, the neighbor and dadi are hillarious!
It is also very sad, though. When we re-watch it, we tend to stop when Shahrukh starts dying. As usual he makes it very dramatic. Sentimenals will cry.
altogether a fabulous movie. Another great Chopra/Johar movie.
The songs are not brilliant though.

It MISSED the most IMPORTANT songs... .......2006-08-04
I thought such a collection would be amazing- Madhuri, Aishwarya (& Rekha) are the three most amazing faces and talented dancers to be in Bollywood and yet this DVD missed on movies as essential as Tezaab, KalNayak, Dil To Pagal Hai when it came to Madhuri. How can one compose a set of her work and not include these! And for Aishwarya, how can one forget her work in Hum Dil De Chuke? These movies had some wonderful dances - I had hoped that this collection would be made of such masterpieces. But, it's nothing close to a collection.
