Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Titanic flowering, as Thompson's deeply romantic sister. Winslet attracts the wooing of shy Alan Rickman (a nice change of pace from his bad-guy roles) and dashing Greg Wise, while Thompson must endure an incredibly roundabout courtship with Hugh Grant, here in fine and funny form. All of this is doled out with the usual eye-filling English countryside and handsome costumes, yet the film always seems to be about the careful interior lives of its characters. The director, an inspired choice, is Taiwan-born Ang Lee, who brings the same exquisite taste and discreet touch he displayed in his previous Asian films (such as Eat Drink Man Woman). Thompson's script won an Oscar, and 1995 was a fine year for Jane Austen all around: Persuasion was made into an excellent picture, and Emma became the spritzy high school comedy Clueless. --Robert Horton

Sense and Sensability.......2007-09-11
An amazing film at an amazing price. Product came in perfect shape except the plastic on the cover had been sliced (probably while opening the box).
Sense And Sensibility.......2007-09-09
If you are a fan of Jane Austin or like me, new admirer of her works, this is a great movie. It captures the romance and the atmosphere of this time and place. I really enjoyed the characters and the story.
IF YOU LIKE JANE AUSTEN MOVIES.......2007-09-06
I love Jane Austen, I love well-done 19th Century Brit Lit classic productions. The actors are fun...Emma Thompson, as always, is superb and Hugh Grant, of course, is the bad boy one just loves to hate. This movie is really multi-purpose: a great way to spend some time if you are home with the sniffles, a great escape on what might be the end of an all too modern day, or just cozy to watch curled up by the fire.
Definitely worth owning...sort of a "little black dress" DVD. ENJOY!
A Social Commentary.......2007-09-06
The worst thing a person can do is underestimate Jane Austen. Though it is true that her stories center on young women and their romantic struggles, her works are not mere romance novels. This film does a wonderful job of demonstrating that.
Emma Thompson is a wonderful actress and she really brings Elinor to life. At times she seems almost cold and unfeeling but she is actually a woman who keeps her own counsel and who is very aware of how society views young women. Better to be thought a cold woman than to make a mockery of herself in the eyes of others. Thompson is at her best in those brief moments when Elinor is alone, when she is gazing sadly at her sister while she plays pianoforte, when she is alone in her room and running her fingers over the monogram embroidered on a handkerchief. Elinor is actually quite a complex character, a woman who loves deeply and wholly but who is also very self and socially aware.
Her polar opposite is her sister Marianne and Kate Winslet is simply perfect in the role. She captures Marianne's youthful exuberance and the blissful lack of awareness that she has for what others think of her. In this day and age, such individuality would be encouraged but in Marianne's time it is seen as a fatal flaw, one that risks making her the target of ridicule of others. She follows her heart over her head, unlike Elinor. As the title indicate, Marianne is all sensibility while her sister is all sense.
Hugh Grant does a nice job of portraying the somewhat socially awkward and very shy Edward. He always looks uncomfortable in his skin and only seems to relax when he is with Elinor or when he is brushing up on his sword wielding skills with Margaret. Edward exemplifies the plight of the younger sons of the era, the need to please the family in order to maintain his position. This was not a time when going it alone was encouraged or even feasible. It is Edward's sense of honor and duty that are almost his undoing and, in some ways, his situation is no better than that of the women. Though he is ostensibly free to choose his profession, he is actually quite subject to the whims of his mother and his vicious social-climbing sister.
The most surprising and rewarding bits of casting lie with Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon. His world weariness and deep sadness are visible in every line of Rickman's face. He has seen what society can do to a young woman determined to follow her passions as Marianne is and it has left a deep impression upon him. Though Elinor has a good grasp of the world, Brandon understands it even better and one of the finest scenes of the movie is the one in which he chides Elinor not to wish for her sister to become acquainted with the ways of the world.
Emma Thompson did a fine job of writing the screenplay for this movie, cutting out some of the less essential bits and lifting quite a bit of the dialogue directly from the text. Ang Lee's direction is lovely and his shots are framed with such care. Often his cast doesn't even need to speak, they simply need to observe and Lee does a wonderful job of capturing the characters' emotions in their quieter moments.
Sense and Sensibility.......2007-08-24
We love this movie. The acting in it is great and you'll come to love each character like an old friend. It is a movie we watch over an over again, enjoying it everytime.

Science fiction and romance collide in The Fountain, the ambitious third feature from director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream), who labored for four years to complete this epic-sized love story that stretches across centuries and galaxies. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz (Aronofsky's real-life companion) play lovers in each of the film's three settings--16th century Europe and America (Jackman is a Spanish explorer searching for Incan magic), the present day (Jackman is a doctor attempting to cure his dying wife), and the 26th century (Jackman is a space traveler seeking a gateway to the afterlife)--who struggle mightily to stay united, only to lose each other time and again. Aronofsky may not have chosen the easiest presentation for audiences to absorb his theories on the lasting qualities of life and the transformative powers of death--the final sequence, in particular, with a bald Jackman floating through space in a bubble, harks back uncomfortably to "head movies" of the late '60s--but his leads have considerable chemistry (and look terrific to boot), which goes a long way towards securing viewers' hopes for a happy ending. Critical reception for The Fountain has been nothing short of bloodthirsty, with Cannes audiences booing, but there are elements to enjoy here, even if the premise throws one for a loop. Ellen Burstyn (who earned an Oscar nomination for Requiem) delivers a typically solid performance as Jackman's boss in the present day sequence, and special effects (most done without the benefit of CGI) are also impressive given the film's low budget (spurred by a mid-production shutdown after original stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett ankled the picture). And science-fiction fans whose tastes run towards the metaphysical (Asimov, Le Guin) will appreciate the attempt to present the genre in a serious light. -- Paul Gaita
Description
Yesterday, today, tomorrow. Past, present, future. Through time and space, one man embarks on a bold 1000-year odyssey to defeat humankind's most indomitable foe: Death. Hugh Jackman plays that man, devoted to one woman (Rachel Weisz) and determined to protect her from forces that threaten her existence. His quest leads him to a Tree of Life...and to an adventure into eternity. Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) directs, continuing his string of imaginative, involving filmmaking with a tale alive with ideas and filled with astonishing vistas. "Not many films can blow your mind and break your heart at the same time, but this one will" (Drew McWeeny, Ain't It Cool News).

awesome movie.......2007-09-09
I love this movie. My only complaint is that the DVD seemed a little dark on my TV. I have never had that kind of problem before, so I assume that there was some sort of adjustment issue. I also recommend buying the movie soundtrack.
Love Death Rebirth Life Love Death Rebirth Life Love.......2007-09-08
Quite a telling image with Hugh Jackman resembling a cross between Timothy Leary and Buddha in the scenes of him as a 26th century explorer. The Fountain is Sci Fi meets epic romance and I'm really glad Hugh Jackman was in this role rather than the original actor cast for the part - Brad Pitt. Jackman is Tomas, Tommy, and Tom in 1500, 2000, and 2500 in a relentless search for a cure to save his love Isabella, Isabelle, Issy. The trio of characters all play into one another but are still distinct. Jackman is an international film star in his own right but his more private relationship with the papparazzi allows his thespian gifts to shine in a more opaque light. Jackman melts into the different personalities that are weaved together in The Fountain. We see his role not his celebrity life clouding a stellar performance. Being a trained actor skilled in singing and dancing makes Jackman a belivable cast of Tomas, Tommy, and Tom in a psychedelic twist of karma and fate across the centuries. He melts into the role with his muse Isabelle/Issy/Isabella whom he spends centuries trying to save. The timing of this film released at the height of Brangelina is poignat because had Brad Pitt stayed in the lead it may have been unbelievable to audiences of the character's mad devotion to stay with his wife. This is what makes the film work.
Jackman emotes well and plays a Spanish conquistador, American medical doctor, and space age explorer all in one without seeming like the same character each time. Cris crossing between three different lifetimes over a millenium to save the woman he loves The Fountain plays on karma, reincarnation, and endless love and its quest to conquer death. The ending is odd because you don't know whether he succeeds or not and it heartbreaking since it isn't clear if the lovers unite. A well done film that blends distinct story lines into a captivating tale that concludes in a unique way. I'm impressed albeit confused. All that said, mark my words, one day movie trailers will promote Academy Award Winner Hugh Jackman in films he stars in. It's evident in The Fountain that, pretty soon, fellow Australian Russell Crowe won't just be sharing the land down under with Jackman, but also an Oscar trophy.
Surprising but not for the reasons you might think.......2007-09-06
I don't think that whether I liked the film or not is particularly important. I definitely don't think it's for everyone, that's for sure. I did enjoy it to a degree but I have to admit that I liked Pi and Requiem For a Dream much better. I know that this little bit that I've written will probably get me incinerated by the Aronofsky purists but hey, I just don't consider it to be a masterpiece. Sorry if this offends anyone.
That being said, I was surprised that this HD-DVD didn't blow me away. The big visual moments in this film don't look so great in all honesty. Not in HD anyway. I was let down by the video transfer of this disc and that's not to say it looks bad but it just didn't wow me like it should've. I thought the Spain sequences looked terrific and other moments as well but I was surprised to find that the movie didn't look absolutely stunning completely throughout. If a movie like Hot Fuzz can have a gorgeous transfer, then there's no excuse here.
The extras are kind of lackluster and a bit tedious in all honesty. I think those looking for something revealing regarding the making of this film will be disappointed.
I'm recommending this one for a rental. This is not a film for everyone and not exactly the kind of HD-DVD that makes you want to invite your friends over and show off your system. And if you love this film through and through, I'd still suggest a rental because the presentation is simply disappointing.
WTF????.......2007-09-05
I had high hopes for this movie, but it just plain sucked the big dog! I tried to follow the plot.....TRIED - NO success with that. I fast forwarded through most of the crap...stopping at parts I THOUGHT would be okay. Nope!
Don't waste your time, don't waste your money, don't waste your brain power.
You would be better off flushing bills down the john while stoned rather than watching this movie.
Hugh and Racheal...shame on you. I bet secretly they didn't even get it. They are still saying to themselves, WTF was that all about?
It was about the paycheck and nothing more, Hugh and Rach!
THE FOUNTAIN.......2007-09-03
Beautiful film, but very bizarre. Jackman and Weitz are fantastic as usual, but the story is very strange. It oscilates between three different story lines that converge. It's a tribute to the director and the talent that this works at all. I had read that Brad Pitt had been slated to star it this film, but that he had to bow out because of the long pre production, though im sure Pitt would have done and interesting turn in this role, I really can't imagine anybody but Jackman making this metaphysical script work: thanks Brad for following Angella all over Africa and letting the role fall by default to the singular Jackman. I recommend this movie, but watch it with an open mind, you may learn something..imagine that.

I love it!.......2007-07-06
I love it I love it I love it! No movie collection is complete without sleepless in seattle!! I have seen it 2 million 40 thousand times and it never gets old. The controversy and persistance of magic, love, fate and the chemistry and amazing acting of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is timeless and unrelenting even as the movie ages. It's a definate classic I do Not regret buying. you will love it! =]
What is last line spoken by Meg Ryan?.......2007-07-01
Also one of my favorite movies. This classic is shown at least once a month on one or another of my cable channels. I am particularly impressed with the way the music moves the story along as it reaches its conclusion. I'm still trying to get the last line--spoken by Meg Ryan just before the elevator doors close and the credits begin. Can anyone tell me what she says to Sam and/or Jonah. Thank you for your assistance. Mary McCue
Wonderful.......2007-06-16
This is a classic film, full of romance and yet the 2 main characters are almost never together...great job!
What I think about Sleepless in Seattle.......2007-05-18
This was supposedly a little known film that made a big impact on me and the general product. Anthing with Tom Hanks is usally a good bet it's going to be good, plus add in Meg Ryan and it's going to be a winner. I realy enjoyed this movie
Feel Good Movie!.......2007-03-18
This is such a feel good movie. It makes you believe in "Love At First Sight" or Love at first touch. This is a movie I watch over and over again. When I am sad and want to be lifted up. When I want to believe in love. There is a line in the movie that goes something like this, "it was like coming home, but not to any home I have ever know before". That's what you want to believe love is, like coming home.

Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was unique in its day for casting kids in the play's pivotal roles of, well, kids. Seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting and 15-year-old Olivia Hussey play the titular pair, the Bard's star-crossed lovers who defy a running feud between their families in order to be together in love. Typically played on stage and in previous film productions by adult actors, the innocent look and rawness of Whiting and Hussey resonated at the time with a burgeoning youth movement from San Francisco to Prague. The tragic romance at the center of the story also clicked with anti-authority sentiments, but even without that, Zeffirelli scores points by validating the ideals and passions of strong-willed adolescents. Less successful are scenes requiring the actors to have a fuller grasp of the text, though the best thing going remains the unambiguous duel between Romeo and Tybalt (Michael York). Lavishly photographed by Pasquale de Santis on location in Italy, this Romeo and Juliet brought a different tone and dimension to a story that had become tiresome in reverential presentations. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Greatest love story of all time!.......2007-08-21
I've seen this movie so many times and never get tired of watching it, again and again and again ... Believe it or not, one's life is controled by Destiny. No matter how hard we try to fight against it, Destiny (or Fate) still conquers and decides our life! Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey are like born to portray, respectively, Romeo and Juliet, the greatest couple blinded by the doomed word "Love". Their love story is even enhanced by great music and marvelous costumes. This movie is true piece of arts!
Very teen-friendly.......2007-07-25
My class loved the movie and asked for a second viewing. Superb! sparked a lot of discussion.
A gotta have.......2007-07-25
The only reason I gave this 5 stars is there is no provision for 6.
Authentic!.......2007-07-13
My sister was a teenager when this movie was made, I was pre-elementary, but I remember the impact it had on her generation. As my own daughter approaches high school and the reading of this work, I found this to be the most closely authentic portrayal, in both language and setting. The mood of this film transports the viewer back hundreds of years, allowing you to bask in the poetic discourse of how we imagine Shakespeare's days. Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting are still as attractive and suited for the roles of the passionate pair; my daughter thought Whiting was as hunky as her generation's beau, Zac Efron.
Romeo and Juliet.......2007-06-28
My favorite version of this oft-filmed classic is Zeffirelli's Oscar-nominated version. Starring two unknowns in the title roles (17-year-old Whiting and 15-year-old Hussey), the movie remains true to Shakespeare, while making the language more accessible to modern audiences. Both Michael York (as Romeo's nemesis, Tybalt) and Milo O'Shea (as Mercutio) lend strong support, while Zeffirelli's unabashed romanticism is enhanced by magnificent period detail and a sweeping score from Nino Rota. The story of youthful rebellion also spoke to basic issues arising in the restive sixties. A top-notch rendering of an eternal classic.

It always comes up when people are comparing their most traumatic movie experiences: "the death of Bambi's mother," a recollection that can bring a shudder to even the most jaded filmgoer. That primal separation (which is no less stunning for happening off-screen) is the centerpiece of Bambi, Walt Disney's 1942 animated classic, but it is by no means the only bold stroke in the film. In its swift but somehow leisurely 69 minutes, Bambi covers a year in the life of a young deer. But in a bigger way, it measures the life cycle itself, from birth to adulthood, from childhood's freedom to grown-up responsibility. All of this is rendered in cheeky, fleet-footed style--the movie doesn't lecture, or make you feel you're being fed something that's good for you. The animation is miraculous, a lush forest in which nature is a constantly unfolding miracle (even in a spectacular fire, or those dark moments when "man was in the forest"). There are probably easier animals to draw than a young deer, and the Disney animators set themselves a challenge with Bambi's wobbly glide across an ice-covered lake, his spindly legs akimbo; but the sequence is effortless and charming. If Bambi himself is just a bit dull--such is the fate of an Everydeer--his rabbit sidekick Thumper and a skunk named Flower more than make up for it. Many of the early Disney features have their share of lyrical moments and universal truths, but Bambi is so simple, so pure, it's almost transparent. You might borrow a phrase from Thumper and say it's downright twitterpated. --Robert Horton

I don't know what to say, except for the amazing bonus content and mini-games. The picture is so clean, you don't even remember how the original version looked.
Bambi DVD.......2007-08-10
This Bambi DVD arrived in a timely fashion.
There was a slight problem with the rest of the order. I ordered Sleeping Beauty; instead I got a 2nd copy of Sleeping Beauty. I sent it back and weeks later the distributor send a postage paid envelope to return the DVD. I had sent this back much sooner than that and the item ended up costing me more.
A truly sacred film better than ever........2007-07-05
Ok im not really a kid Im just in disguise. Ok I loved bambie as a little kid I grew up on one of these disney movies and finally they came out with a special edition dvd which made the grapics better than before. They show the before and after image of the cover and some games. Im too old for this movie so I wanted to buy this for my little sister and she loved it I watched the movie with her and it took me back to my childhood years. And also I was scratching my head when they were releasing a sequel to bambie I found no interest in that and I think they should have left the first one alone bambie came out in 1942 jeez.

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Harold & Maude one of the sweetest and most unconventional love stories ever made. Much of the earlier humor arises from Harold's outrageous suicide fantasies, played out as a kind of twisted parlor game to mortify his mother, who's grown immune to her strange son's antics. Gradually, however, the film's clever humor shifts to a brighter outlook and finally arrives at a point where Harold is truly happy to be alive. Featuring soundtrack songs by Cat Stevens, this comedy certainly won't appeal to all tastes (it was a box-office flop when first released), but if you're on its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies you've ever seen. --Jeff Shannon

A classic.......2007-09-10
Great movie with awesome soundtrack. No violence or nudity. My teenagers loved it too. Very Quirky.
Greatest movie ever?.......2007-09-08
I've loved this movie ever since I was first introduced to it in college 15 years ago. It's filled with very funny scenes, terrific acting, and the most PERFECT movie soundtrack. Buy it! Watch it until you have every line and musical note memorized!
Independent Cinema's Forebear.......2007-08-15
What can be said about Harold and Maude? Beautiful love story of two cosmic souls brought together by death. Hilarious black comedy with a heart of gold. I could think of more cliches but I digress.
Harold is a lonely lost young man, he stages suicides for his mother's benefit in a fruitless attempt for her attention. Upon attending a funeral he meets Maude, an elderly jovial woman so full of life she radiates happiness. Their friendship blossoms and Harold leans how to live instead of just existing. It is amazing how just one person could free him from his mental prison and realize that life is worth living.
Maude is really the muse of this film. Her philosophy is so clear and truthful that all the (explitive deleted) of the world just melts away and she is truly free. It is still is a very fun movie not heavy handed, just a pure delight.

A box-office hit when released in 1994, this sprawling, frequently overwrought familial melodrama may get sillier as its plot progresses, but it's the kind of lusty, character-based epic that Hollywood should attempt more often. It's also an unabashedly flattering star vehicle for Brad Pitt as Tristan--the rebellious middle son of a fiercely independent Montana rancher and military veteran (Anthony Hopkins)--who is routinely at odds with his more responsible older brother, Alfred (Aidan Quinn), and younger brother, Samuel (Henry Thomas). From the battlefields of World War I to his adventures as an oceangoing sailor, Tristan's life is full of personal torment, especially when he returns to Montana and finds himself competing with Alfred over Samuel's beautiful widow (Julia Ormond), whose passion for Tristan disrupts the already turbulent Ludlow clan. Under the wide-open canopy of Big Sky country, this operatic tale unfolds with all the bloodlust, tragedy, and scenery-chewing performances you'd expect to find in a hokey bestselling novel (in fact, it's based on the acclaimed novella by Jim Harrison), but it's a potent mix that's highly entertaining. Not surprisingly, John Toll won an Academy Award for his breathtaking outdoor cinematography. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Great Film!!!.......2007-08-20
Touches all levels of emotions, along with enough masculinity to support "not just another chick-flick"
A bigger than life story that merits the title - Legend.......2007-08-15
I never saw this movie until this year when a friend brought the DVD to my place saying how much he liked the movie. I thought it would be more of a sappy melodrama, but I ended up liking it so much that I have added it to my library of favorites. Three brothers, the love of a father and being in love with the same woman mix together in this movie to form a bigger than life story that merits the title - Legend.
The filming is excellent, taking us through some beautiful country and I think Brad Pitt's performance is one of his best. The emotions he goes through to show his character's passion for living and for his family drew me in until I was completely wrapped up in the story. I liked how it is told in the voice of a Native American in the tradition of his people, thus forming the legend of the man who's spirit is kindred to a Grizzly Bear. I would have liked to see the love interest, Susannah be a stronger woman, but then the trials that the family goes through would not have been the same if such were the case.
Anthony Hopkins is one of my favorite actors and this movie shows off his skills well, infusing the character of the father with both humanity and a toughness that provides depth and interest throughout.
Three brothers and one woman under the Big Sky country........2007-06-17
This movie is an epic tale told of three brothers and one woman in Montana in the first part of the twentieth century. The youngest brother comes home from college with a beautiful woman on his side. She falls for the middle brother Brad Pitt, who is not altogether interested. The oldest brother falls hopelessly in love with her. This movies plot does get convoluted and confusing at times. The tortured soul that is the middle brother is a model for narcissistic ego maniac. It does have beautiful cinematography, and the story and the characters are interesting enough to keep your attention. The problem I have with the movie is that it does just get too bogged down with its own story. Overall it is fun to watch and I recommend it.
Love, betrayal, and drama..........2007-05-16
The beauty of the countryside in this movie is magnificent. The Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s must have offered challenging experiences as people wrestled with the elements.
The movie is the story of a man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who has three sons and is abandoned by his wife. So he sets out to raise these three boys and at some point writes to his wife to say... I know how to guide men through war, but this is much harder...
Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Colonel Ludlow, discharged from the war because he wanted to regain some sanity. Therefore, he hates government, he despises the drive to conquer and fight over land, and is highly protective of Indians.
This family of men lives out in the wilderness, therefore, nature is the chisel that forms the character of the three boys. They are very close and the oldest two, played by Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn, are extremely caring and protective of their younger brother, played by Henry Thomas.
The younger son goes away to college and there he meets Susanna, played by Julia Ormond [played Princess Guinevere in the movie First Knight]. He falls in love with her and upon returning home, brings her along to meet the family.
As she enters the life of these lonely men, she captures the heart of each and everyone. The father is delighted that a refined lady has joined them because thanks to her they read, sing, and enjoy the feminine side of life. But... the three brothers soon encounter the difficulties of jealousy, envy, betrayal and competition for the same woman.
Brad Pitt, as usual, plays the role of the man who breaks other people's relationships, breaks hearts all around, but his performance is superb as Tristan... the favorite son.
Don't miss it! A 1994 Academy winner for best cinematography, this movie offers the passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal, and families.
One of the best movies ever made........2007-03-27
Personally I think this movie is one the best that has ever been made. The acting is all superb and the storyline is so unique that I have never seen another movie like it. It is the story of a legend as the young boys grow into men and strive to find their own way in the world.

Customer Reviews:
Good christian drama.......2007-08-23
I loved the first movie of this series and I enjoyed this one. Missy is now grown up and has a family of her own. But one of her children dies and she has to cope with the tragedy. Her father and family help her do this. And one of her sons finds a romance with the mayor's daughter, Colette (Mae Whitman). Mae Whitman is such a good actress, and hasn't she become so grownup and a beautiful young women? She's come so far since her previous films as a child star. She really grew up. You would not remember her at all from her earlier work. She was really good in "Theif."
A good read for young women - plus movie version.......2007-08-14
This is the fourth book in the Love Comes Softly series. I ordered the first three in the series on a hunch that they would be good since they have been made into movies. I ordered these for my 15 year old daughter to read through the summer. I also ordered the DVDs. My daughter is not an avid reader so I had to twist her arm a bit to read these. I am glad they were interesting to her and had good life lessons in them. I would have her read aloud to me and we would discuss what was happening in the story. This was also her first time to see that the book and the movie is often very different. We are still readig the series.
no show .......2007-08-10
This was my disabled mother's dream to find this movie and has been searching for a couple of years. When the movies was put in DVD Player there was no movie it was blank. The Dvd was also put in many other Dvd players and was blank. Amazon also doesnt make it easy to return especially if you do not own a printer to print the return labels
not 19th century, but well worth watching.......2007-07-13
This movie was a good finish to the 4-part series. While it placed some 20th and 21st century values in a 19th century setting, it's a wholesome movie with a good message...do what's right, even though it may affect your friends because right is right. I think Dale Midkiff's character (Clark Davis)kept things on track for the family in this film.
great movie .......2007-05-15
This is a great movie you should get all of them> I really liked them. When i was done i shared them with my best friend and also my mother.

Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful love story.......2007-09-09
When I went to see this movie in the theatre years ago, I was so sure that I wasn't going to like this film. There was a loud rumbling in the romance community about this story being written by a man. At the time there were a lot of them. This one, Message in a Bottle and a Walk to Remember shortly after. So there I was in all my huffy glory, glaring at the screen. But all that nonesense was forgotten as this wonderful story started to unfold. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep had me smiling and melting in this forbidden love story in no time flat. By the time we reach the scene where Eastwood is standing in the middle of the street during a rain down pour, I was begging her to get out the car. Run, girl. Run to your true soul mate! Ah, amour. So despite my prejudices I fell helplessly in love with this story--and you will too. Highly recommended.
BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.......2007-08-28
I own all of Eastwood movies.Including..Rawhide series. All his motion pictures are widescreen...all! What about'.....Madison County?Who in the world didn't stop to think..this too should be in widescreen..to get the whole pictureSCOPE of this great Romatic future classic.I do have it also on Laser Disc.& it's in widescreen.I just run a print to a blank dvd for now.
Come on you people who sell these movies..if nothing else...put both versions on dvd. They do that you know?
Loved This Movie ,Made Me Cry.......2007-08-25
I wasn't sure I would like this movie since I had already read the book and fell in love with this story.
I'll have to admit Clint Eastwood & Merle Streep did a beautiful job. There were parts that were left out of course but all in all a very good movie, still the book was much better and left me wanting more.
Too bad there cannot be a sequel since both characters are now deceased.
The only part I did not like was the beginning where her children found the story of her love story. I hated the actions of the son or maybe it was the actor.
Crud story, glorifying adultery - disgusting trash.......2007-08-15
This movie makes me sick. Basically it's a movie about a woman who betrays her marriage vows, betrays her husband, betrays her children. It's a movie about a man that commits sin by persuing a sexual relationship with a married woman. The first time I watched this movie (and the last) I found myself hoping the husband would come home and catch the two in the act. He would have been justified in kicking the snot out the filthy no good womanizer. There's no repentance for sin in this movie, no confession of guilt. Heck, for all we know the wicked man gave the married woman a mean case of the herps and then moved on to the next town where he did it all over again (that's the way these people are) How many marriages have been wrecked by this type of thing? And they throw it up on the big screen and package it as a love story? No, it's not a love story. It's a story of human depravity at its worst. If this movie had been advertised as such, I would give it 5 stars for it displays wickedness of unrepentant human hearts in grand fashion. But since this movie tries to pass itself off as a romantic interlude between two lonely adults.. uh uh. It's just horrible, new age agenda laden, anti-christian schlock. Avoid it unless you enjoy throwing up in disgust.
It only takes one love to complete the journey ..........2007-07-22
This review is dedicated to the boy who once slugged his subject line "To the girl who wisely wouldn't date me in the `60s." A road less traveled out of fear for the unknown can seem like your downfall. But, harbor no regrets. In fact there are paths we take to help fill the void. As trite as this may sound, one of those paths can be a great movie. "The Bridges of Madison County" has become both a life-saving tool (a bit dramatic) and an obsession for me. The DVD places its two main characters, brilliantly acted out by Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, into a state of infinite thoughts that transcend all boundaries. In his novel, Robert James Waller poignantly describes the fuse used to shape a lifetime of bliss in just four days, scenes the DVD expertly portrays and brings to life. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this epic tale is a much-needed time warp to a better place through the eyes of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid, who share a passion for common ground that only comes along once.

-- Paul Gaita

awesome movie.......2007-09-09
