Big Eden has won the audience awards at just about every gay and lesbian film festival there is. Henry (Arye Gross) is an artist living in New York but still carrying a torch for the guy he had a crush on in high school. When his grandfather has a stroke, Henry returns to his Montana hometown, Big Eden, where he rediscovers friends he hasn't seen in years. His high school crush has since married, had children, and divorced--and seems ready to take some very different steps with his life. Big Eden is one of those implausibly tolerant towns where lesbians kiss each other in public and old coots in cowboy hats try to play matchmaker with bashful queers. Still, it's this sweet warmth in Big Eden that has made it a festival crowd-pleaser. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Warmth, heart, and humor.......2007-08-26

With its emphasis on unconditional love and complete acceptance of diversity, you just know the bumps on the road of life in this movie are bound to be smoothed out eventually. Yet the ending manages, by means of humor, not to drown in sappy sentimentality. Louise Fletcher, in the only positive character (a total non-villain!) I've ever seen her play, is especially warm with radiant eyes. The focal character is appropriately naive and self-centered--until he learns to open up and to care. Bravo!!

5 out of 5 stars Let your gay nature speak aloud.......2007-08-16

The film is well done, that's all and that's good. But what makes it interesting is of course the subject, gay love, a love affair among gay men in the heart of a small community in Montana. We have all the essential elements of a good heart-breaking and heart-rejoicing story. The father who is going to die, the relatives and friends of the community to which the son comes back from New York who are helpful, friendly and over comprehensive to the point of deciding to help. Then an old best friend who had been very friendly in the past in High School arrives too, divorced with two little boys under his custody. The attempt at reopening the closed file fails because that best friend of old does not seem to accept to abandon all his habits of thinking and behaving and to just delve into the love that is proposed to him. But thanks to the villagers another love appears fast, the main hero and the Indian manager of the General Store and diner. This Indian is in cooking and he is manipulated into cooking for the son and the father when the father is back home from hospital. And a love affair car start there. This cross-cultural relationship makes it all the more impressive because to be gay is like to be an Indian in a small community, or as for that in a big one: it is difficult to assume because it is a minority situation but it has to be accepted by the concerned people first of all. One cannot be free in society if they are not free in their heads first of all. Then the film can close on a long kiss in the midst of the locals. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

I ENJOYED THIS MOVIE VERY MUCH WOULD WATCH IT AGAIN AND AGAIN,
GOOD ACTING AND STORY.

5 out of 5 stars Big Eden, you've got to love this one...........2007-06-08

Definately not your run of the mill gay movie. Homophobia does not exist in it. It does not represent the world as is, but as it should be. Maybe we will learn how to love our fellow man enough to accept them as they are, not how we think they should be, as Christ taught us. Enjoyed it very much. No sex, just love.... worthy of you....

3 out of 5 stars Big Eden? Not in Montana........2007-05-23

I think "Big Eden" easily merits a five star rating in most respects. The film's acting, direction and especially casting are excellent. But I have to take a few stars away for its storyline, which is a confusing mix of believable fiction and nonsensical fantasy -- a mix that will appeal far more to some audiences than others. I've never been to any small town (let alone one in Montana) where the entire community seemed to have nothing else to do except matchmake gay couples. The absurdity of this premise detracted greatly from what I think is an otherwise outstanding film.

Tom Bezucha's story would have easily stood on its own, without the introduction of this absurd fantasy. We got proof of that claim five years later, in a film called "Brokeback Mountain". "Big Eden" is the same basic story, only far less dramatic and with a much happier ending. Compare Jack Twist to Henry Hart, and Ennis Del Mar to Dean Stewart.

5 out of 5 stars Africa Calling! .......2006-06-12

This is the only Live 8 concert that featured predominantly African performers. I have come to know many African performers by contimplations by Putumayo Records and with working with African Refugees in America. It was fun to see these performers on DVD and appreciate their music even more. I really enjoyed the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Live 8 Eden - The Roots of Africa.......2005-10-13

I was lucky enough to attend the Cornwall event at the Eden Project. For those who are unfamiliar with the venue, it is an area in Cornwall, England that had huge biodomes. Guests can come to learn about all kinds of plant life and discover the green planet. This leg of the Live 8 concert was a bit different in that it included primarily performers from Africa. It was a heartfelt relaxed day mixed with music and dance. I imagine that the other Live 8 events were more commercial. (...) The day was absolutely memorable and I woudl strongly suggest picking up this DVD to learn more about the music and cultures of Africa.
