The new "extended edition" of this ground-breaking feature length movie presentation reveals The Great Secret of the universe. It has been passed throughout the ages, traveling through centuries... to reach you. This is The Secret to everything - the secret to unlimited joy, health, money, relationships, love, youth: everything you have ever wanted. In this astonishing program are ALL the resources you will ever need to understand and live The Secret. For the first time in history, the world's leading scientists, authors, and philosophers will reveal The Secret that utterly transformed the lives of every person who ever knew it... Plato, Newton, Carnegie, Beethoven, Shakespeare, Einstein. Now YOU will know The Secret. And it can change your life forever.

Amazon.com

Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it's The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).

Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won't resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini

5 out of 5 stars The Secret: Movie synopsis and opinion.......2007-09-14

The Secret (Extended Edition)
The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Basically it breaks down like this "Like attracts Like". You attract to you what you put out type thing. This movie tries to explain how to use this on a conscious level for achieving what you want in your life instead of attracting what you don't. I love this movie, I love the idea behind this movie. I find it very empowering.

Yes, the movie does emphasize a bit on wealth and gain, however it also speaks of using it (the secret) in Health and Relationships, how it can apply to anything and anyone. I love that idea, maybe the people just need a little faith in something other than themselves. I think of this movie as a gift for the masses, just think it we could all get ourselves together long enough to do something on a deeper level. Also check out "The Power of the Subconscious Mind by John Murphy", it's been around since the 60's. Good luck and keep an open mind.

4 out of 5 stars It is not my secret........2007-09-14

I do not hate this movie as some do. It simply does not direct me to the things I seek. It is a movie about being successful. As such, it succeeds.

Yet, having said that, I nevertheless think it is a little misleading. Is there really a secret to getting things? Perhaps there is. But, whatever the secret is, it is much more complicated than setting intentions. And for those who live in poverty, positive thinking is often a foreign language.

If you are born into a rich family, one which values financial success, and you are taught to succeed; then you will probably be successful. Being positive will come easily to you. If on the other hand, you are born into a poor family, one which struggles to survive, and you are taught to struggle; then you will probably not be successful. Being negative will come easily for you. This is not a secret. It is harsh, but true I think.

Of course, there are exceptions. There are those who succeed despite all obstacles of birth and circumstance. And it is to those many individuals desiring to be exceptions that movies such as "The Secret" aim.

And there's nothing wrong with being successful. There was a comedian once who said, more or less, "I've been rich, and I've been poor, and believe you me rich is better." I think it was Joe E. Brown who said that, and I agree with him. While I have never been rich, I have been poor. And I did not like it. Making ends meet took all my time. I was too tired to meditate, too tired to read nourishing books, and too tired to spend time with those I loved. But I was not too tired to worry.

Nor is there anything wrong with being positive, or setting intentions, or manifesting what you think you want. This is much better than being negative, not setting intentions, and manifesting what you think you do not want. The former typically results in a better life.

But beyond having enough money to live well by my own standards, which does not include a fancy car or a huge house, I do not aspire to greater riches. My mind, or at least my mind as I know it, simply cannot take me to the place I seek. I seek a place of inner tranquility. I cannot manifest this place through positive thinking. Nor can I manifest it through setting intentions.

But for those who live one step above poverty as they send children to college, pay mortgages, and work hard; this may be a good movie for them. Life can be hard, and people need hope. And if movies such as this can give hope, then that is a good thing. I truly hope this movie inspires and uplifts all who see it. But I also hope that all who see it understand that there is more than this to life.

You know, though, come to think of it, a chauffeur would be nice, and maybe a maid or two, and a cook. Then I would need a mansion. And I suppose I would need a sailing yacht to get away from all my servants. And I'd need a captain because I don't know how to sail. I suppose I would have to have a few pretty girls in bikinis to lounge on the deck, like in the movies. But I'm married. So maybe I should get a dog instead. This being rich business is harder than it looks!

Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

5 out of 5 stars Defending The Secret.......2007-09-14

To appreciate The Secret, you have to have an open mind to watch it. If you are "the glass is half empty" kind of person, you will only point out the flaws in this movie, because that is what you do in life. Sure you can search for the meanings and blessings, but you don't think you can change the situation. There IS evidence of mind-over-matter, but if you aren't open to the concept, you will think it's a hoax. The movie doesn't say you don't have to work for something, they say you DO have to take action, you can't just visualize it. It makes sense that if you want out of debt, you should focus on words such as financial freedom versus debt-free. The latter still focuses on debt. I watched the movie two weekends ago and I have been practicing positive images and the feelings associated with having financial freedom, etc. (even driving the car). Guess what - I have used my credit card very little and paid off $7,000 of debt last week and have another $6,000 planned to pay off next week. Oh, I also got a check in the mail today and have received 3 unexpected business referrals in the past 10 days. After struggling with my credit card debt since college (15 years),this movie has helped me change my thinking and I believe I will be out of that debt (and maybe have my car paid off)by the end of the year. Many people don't want to take responsibility for their situation, so instead blame others. That way, you don't have to try and change it because "it's out of your control".
By the way, sickness CAN be healed, but like the movie says, you can't change others, only yourself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my personal treasures.......2007-09-13

This is Esther and Abraham on video, doing what they do best. The great thing about this video is that there are nearly 4 hours of Abraham taking on people's concerns and helping them to clean up their vibrations from a wide variety of perspectives. If you know anything about Abraham and the Art of Allowing, then you know that cleaning up your vibration is the key to everything. I enjoy watching the dialogues over and over, because it gives me a clear picture of how someone who has mastered the Art of Allowing goes about taking care of negative vibes. The dialogue between Abraham and others, the forking technique, the rampage of appreciation, etc. speaking to me from the outside, give me a good idea of how to dialogue with my negative thoughts on the inside whenever I notice myself offering emotional resistance to the manifestation of my desires.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have DVD! I loved it!.......2007-09-04

I love this DVD. I love that you get to see EstherAbraham visually. I love listening to their audio, but seeing is even better! If you are into Abraham or anything related, this is a must-have for your library. Their teaching is so clear to me. I wish they would make more DVDs!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT whether you are new to the law of attraction or have "been around".......2007-09-04

Some people might have barriers go up when they hear that "Abraham" is a group of non-earth bound entities who have come here to help us through Esther and Jerry Hicks. Please, please, don't let that stop you from buying this DVD set and soaking up the Divinely Inspired information that comes through Esther. Whether it is Abraham (which I personally believe) or just Esther, the precious jewels about living a happy and prosperous life that come out of her mouth in this DVD are truly inspiring and life changing. She is funny, direct and incredibly insightful.

Every time I watch this DVD, I pick up something that I didn't hear before or maybe wasn't ready to hear. I will continue to watch it, it is now in my every growing rotation of great DVD's including What the Bleep?, The Secret, Your Immortal Brain and others. Keep this information in your mind all the time because it works and it is true!

This is even more mind opening than The Secret, which is a good introduction to the Law of Attraction, but this takes it further and explains it in a very clear way.

I have not been to a Hicks Workshop before as I live in Costa Rica, but now I feel as if I have, this DVD is very complete. You can see the release, joy and inspiration on the faces of the people in the audience as Abraham, through Esther, talks to them. I got the chills many times while watching it!

What can I say, I LOVE IT!!! BUY IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-08-31

The next best thing to being at a seminar... reminders of our Well-being. Abraham and Esther give you a roadmap to your bliss. They can't take you there, but they point the way for you to own your destiny and have or become anything you desire. Some repetition gives many different perspectives that anyone can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD.......2007-08-28

For anyone interested in improving the quality of their lifes. this is a taped recording of one of Abraham's seminars. It contains many insights, and clearly shows the viewer how to create what you want, by releasing the resistance in your life...which is the only thing that prevents us from getting what we want. I highly reccomend this DVD. Esther at her best!

Four extremely beautiful people do extremely horrible things to one another in Closer, Mike Nichols' pungent adaptation of Patrick Marber's play that easily marks the Oscar-winning director's best work in years. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who specializes in portraits of strangers; Dan (Jude Law) is an obituary writer struggling to become a novelist; Alice (Natalie Portman) is an American stripper freshly arrived in London after a bad relationship; and Larry (Clive Owen) is a dermatologist who finds love under the most unlikely of circumstances. When their paths cross it's a dizzying supernova of emotions, as Nichols and Marber adroitly construct various scenes out of their lives that pair them again and again in various permutations of passion, heartbreak, anger, sadness, vengeance, pleading, deception, and most importantly, brutal honesty. It's only until you're more than halfway through the movie that you'll have to ask yourself exactly why you are watching such a beautifully tragic tale, as Closer is basically the ickiest, grossest, most dysfunctional parts of all your past relationships strung together into one movie. Ultimately, it falls to the four actors to draw you deeper into the story; all succeed relatively, but it's Law and Owen whose characters will cut you to the quick. Law proves that yet again he's most adept at playing charming, amoral bastards with manipulative streaks, and Owen is nothing short of brilliant as the character most turned on by the energy inherent in destructive relationships--whether he's on the giving or receiving end. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Great character study! Which one are you?.......2007-09-07

This movie is RAW. If you want a feel good and bubble gum and lollipops type of movie, this is not for you.

This is one of the BEST character studies I have seen in a long time. It's ugly, it's raw, but it's REAL and that could be why some felt so ill at ease. To like this movie is to accept that people really are this selfish and ugly-hearted. This could very well happen and that's what turns your stomach.

By far, Clive Owen owns this movie! You are disgusted by him from beginning to end, but find yourself rooting for him on several occasions, then mad at yourself that you are doing so. But then when you look at the alternative for Anna (Julia Roberts) in Dan (Jude Law), you allow yourself the moral misstep. Dan is quietly selfish and insecure. You realize early on there's an invisible bar that he's set that no one can meet or sustain.

At the end of this movie, you'll ask yourself (in regards to family, friends, and intimate relationships) are you the one setting the unrealistic bar, or are you the one trying to meet one? Are you being yourself while also allowing others to be who they are.

"Alice" was played BRILLIANTLY by Natalie Portman. She had the right balance or tough chick and little-girl-lost. You clearly understood she was someone who wanted to be loved and accepted "as is" flawed and all. Doesn't everyone? She was the only innocent one, so to speak, in the entire quadrangle. She gave her body at the end masking her rejection and hurt. We all know someone whose done this or continues to do this. Although clearly misguided, Alice is the only one who didn't maliciously or selfishly hurt someone she claimed to love.

What makes Larry so remarkable is that he understood they were all flawed INCLUDING HIMSELF, but unlike Dan, accepted it. He knew Anna was a depressive. She didn't have to stay "up" and perfect for him. Larry allowed her to have her blue funks because he knew exactly what made her function comfortably. He was quite content in lifting and supporting her in her art of "photographing sad people beautifully" as Alice said, hitting the Anna nail right on the head. Anna was beautiful to the world, but was sad upon closer inspection. Dan never even realized her condition because it was all about him. Larry understood 'you are what you are,' anything better than that was a great moment. Because he understood this, he knew how to manipulate and orchestrate them all into ultimately getting what he wanted. Dan never got "it" in regard to his relationships because again, it was about him and distracting from his own securities. He had lived and supposedly loved Anna, but didn't really know her - same for "Alice." Any revelations as to who they really were, came from outside sources.

Alice told Larry hidden truths about herself because he was totally open with her - nothing hidden which in turn made her comfortable enough to talk.

Julia gave a great understated performance. She wasn't overly emotional, she didn't rely on her sexuality, she simply existed from moment-to-moment as a depressive does.

I challenge anyone who hated the ugliness of this movie to rewatch it with new eyes.

GREAT-GREAT film!

3 out of 5 stars MAKES YOU WANT TO JOIN A MONESTERY.......2007-08-25

Wow, what an exhausting movie about some really f**ked up people. Just when you started to root for a character they would do something so base and digusting you would just sit there in shock. The dialoge is great, thanks to this being an acclaimed stage production, the performances are good, Clive Owen the stand out, he was exceptional. Im really not sure id recommend this movie, it's so depressing, and what it says about these four losers is not pretty, but on the other hand the performances are good, the dialoge well written and i liked the fact is is shot on location in London...really up to you, but be prepared to be very frustated, these four are idiots of the highest order and deserve each other, I really hate to think that anyone could be as horrible as any of these four.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Drama.......2007-08-18

It has its flaws of course: the dialogue is exagerrated and serendipity plays an all too prominent role. But this is one of my all time favorite films. The beauty of this film comes from embracing everything it has to offer such as witty euphemisms (of the few it has). But be warned: it is very cut throat and bellicose in its depiction of surreal contemporary relationships. Its not putting on a mask and calling people out on their innocence. In this film, no one is spared the sledge-hammer.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst movie ever.......2007-08-11

This was the most degraded garbage I ever tried to watch I got halfway through and was so disgusted I shreded the disc .
The constant swearing and vulgarity were totaly uncalled for.

4 out of 5 stars Clive looking good.......2007-06-27

A really good pick if you want a slew of good actors and especially Clive Owen. Interesting, kept me from falling asleep, a problem I have now that I have a yound child at home, ha! had some nice dreams after this too, what a plus.

Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan turn on the movie-star twinkle in Laws of Attraction. They're both divorce lawyers whose in-court conflicts give rise to sparks of an entirely different nature--and while they're in Ireland, trying to determine whether the husband or wife in a rock-star divorce deserves to keep a swank castle, they "accidentally" get married. Back in New York, they agree to keep up the pretence of marriage, lest a quickie divorce make them the laughingstocks of the legal community. Few comedies are as outright clumsy as Laws of Attraction; the plot falls apart even as you're watching it, the dialogue stumbles, the direction is graceless. Somehow Moore (Far From Heaven, The Hours) and Brosnan (Tomorrow Never Dies) sustain their charm--but if you're looking for a comedy about divorce, Intolerable Cruelty or the classic Adam's Rib provide a lot more fun. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING EVERY TIME I WATCH IT!.......2007-05-29

Unlike many other viewers, I judge a movie strictly on its entertainment value, based on how I liked it, not on how it stands up to the technical merits of previous movies of similar gender or how it fits into any format of political correctness or whether it meets some current fad of society or on how the critics liked it. I can, and will, think for my self, and I'm very wary of those who don't. I get, and see, far too much crap in everyday life, and I am, therefore, more than 'sick and tired' of special interest productions designed to support some Hollywood click's cause. A production, Hollywood or otherwise, designed to misguide the audience by devious manipulation of facts, a ploy intended to influence the ignorant majority and idiots, regarding some special interest cause, is not my idea of entertainment.

Therefore, I find this movie VERY ENTERTAINING EVERYTIME I WATCH IT! Isn't the ENJOYMENT FACTOR important too? I say, "Knock-off the BS and give me, and those like me, more movies like 'Laws of Attraction."

[..] Isn't the primary purpose of a movie to entertain its audience? I say, "This movie does exactly that; it will entertain you and that it's worthy of its purchase price and is a good investment towards one's serach for a little enjoyment!"

Why not purchase this DVD, sit back with a favoriate beverage to sip, relax a little, and enjoy this delightful romantic comedy? I can't guarantee that you will like it, but, I sincerely believe, that the odds highly favor you will.

5 out of 5 stars Great couple..........2007-05-04

They couldn't have put a better couple together than these two! I love a good fight. Brosnan and Moore know how to put one together and how to make up. Very funny chick flick.

It's not the greatest film but for some reason I adore it! However,...for loving this movie so much I'm hesitant to purchase it. I just check it out of the library when I want to see it. :-) Don't judge me!
Anyways, I give it a 3.8!.......that's good right?

The DVD has alternate ending infront of a very magnificient Irish green cliff opening up to water stream, a great shot, nicely done! Not sure why it didn't make it in the final cut but anyway very entertaining, one sweet movie! Loved every minute of it!
Higly recommended!!

This is a good movie with a good story. The movie really shows the dark side of criminal outlaw biker gangs, while also helping understand the brotherhood of the lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars beyond the law dvd.......2007-03-17

good quality dvd with a great storyline, all the better for being based on fact

4 out of 5 stars Based on a true story.......2007-01-18

Charlie Sheen plays a law enforcement officer that goes undercover in order to infiltrate a notorious motorcycle gang. His character has a harder time keeping his real life and undercover life separate because of some legitimate psychological baggage her carries around from childhood. You can see where his character seems to forget he is a cop and goes too far at times. This takes him to close to the edge where he realizes he has to come out or he may never re-gain his normal life.

Michael Madsen does a fantastic job as being the leader of the motorcycle club. Even though you know he is the leader of this dangerous gang of felons and the worse of them all. He and the director give his character an edge that almost makes him likable. Showing that evil does have a seductive side.

This film is based on a true story of Police Officer Dan Saxon who went undercover for two and half years in order to make his case. It resulted in 498 arrest and 497 convictions. Though the screenwriters have taken liberties with some embellishment, it is a pretty accurate peak inside a Motorcycle clubs life in the mid seventies.

4 out of 5 stars Good Sheen.......2006-07-03

Since the quality of Hollywood is so poor lately, I have taken to watching the older B movies, and this was a good one. The storyline wavered between "iffy" and good, as so many of the movies of this period did, but I'm okay with that if the acting is good. Early Sheen is not as good as some of the other Brat Packers, but; as I said, given the quality of Hollywood movies nowadays, I'm having fun watching some of the 1980 B movies.

4 out of 5 stars Another 4-Star Movie for Guys Who Like Movies..........2006-01-01

Okay, this role isn't WALL STREET or PLATOON, but Charlie Sheen kicks butt in this film about a screwed up cop who goes undercover with a bike gang. Sound familiar? It should, as this genre has been made a hundred times. This movie, however, is one of the best. And since it was based (very) loosely on a true story then that much the better.

My favorite actor in the film, though, is a thoroughly bad-assed Michael Madsen as the antagonist. He spews perfect timing as the leader of the biker gang.

Additionally, Leon Rippy does a great job as sidekick "Virgil", who is probably the most believable character in the film. Also, Dennis Burkley (a wonderful bit actor that will surely be recognized) is perfectly cast as "Oatmeal". Lastly, it is always good to have Rip Torn in any movie, lending heavyweight acting to any role.

Simply, this is a keeper and a must see. Hey, I'm a just a guy...

Product Description

A witty, romantic, and very dangerous love story about chance meetings, instant attractions, and casual betrayals. Closer is director Mike Nichols' critically acclaimed look at four strangers - Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen - with one thing in common: each other. Adapted by Patrick Marber from his award-winning stage play.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Video in so many ways........2007-06-27

The best thing about this video is that it's not boring. You learn so much and ACE really keeps you interested. Most instructional videos put you to sleep or you lose attention but the way this video was cut keeps you watching it over and over. It's refreshing to see a new approach to dance instruction. Best part is, you really learn! And ACE is an amazing teacher!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and informative.......2007-06-23

Ace will teach you to moonwalk, six step, wave, body wave, worm, james brown and laugh till it hurts. Not only is he a great dancer and instructor that will break down each move into it's most basic parts, he also has a great sense of humor. The video is basic enough for those with little dance experience to learn from and the funny parts will keep everyone entertained throughout - I can see people having fun by learning from this DVD in a group.

I especially liked the moonwalk section taught by "Ace Jackson" - I seriously had to rewind the video because I missed parts b/c I was laughing too hard. Get the video, you will learn some moves and laugh - real hard.

5 out of 5 stars A hilarious, brilliant, informative and impressive video!.......2007-06-14

The guys of Elastic Illusion are massively talented! This video took me back to a very happy place, a simpler time, where dancing was everything. I enjoyed the ride. A curse hangs over Kaneto Shindo's primal Japanese classic like a looming storm cloud, but the supernatural has got nothing on the desperation and savagery of the human animal trying to survive the horrors of war. In 16th-century Japan, a hardened middle-aged woman and her young daughter-in-law have turned predator to survive, murdering the soldiers who wander into the sea of pampas grass surrounding their hut and selling their weapons for rice. When their war-deserter neighbor returns home and makes his moves on the young woman, their numb equilibrium is complicated by greed, jealousy, and lust. The consequences are terrible and not exactly surprising, but they are gripping. Shindo's unnerving close-ups, bobbing handheld camerawork, and soundtrack of pounding drums and howling flutes gives Onibaba a queasy intensity. Shooting in stark black and white, he makes even the waving of the grass look ominous as it all but swallows everyone who enters. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Deep within the wind-swept marshes of war-torn medieval Japan, an impoverished mother and her daughter-in-law eke out a lonely, desperate existence. Forced to murder lost samurai and sell their belongings for grain, they dump the corpses down a deep, dark hole and live off of their meager spoils. When a bedraggled neighbor returns from the skirmishes, lust, jealousy, and rage threaten to destroy the trio's tenuous existence, before an ominous, ill-gotten demon mask seals their horrifying fate. Driven by primal emotions, dark eroticism, a frenzied score by Hikaru Hayashi, and stunning images both lyrical and macabre, Kaneto Shindo's chilling folktale, Onibaba, is a singular cinematic experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love and Death--The Things That Make LIfe Worth Living.......2007-09-11

This film is certainly one of the greatest films ever shot. By reducing life to its simplest terms, and presenting the director's vision in the brilliant style of the 1960's revolution in the arts, the visceral impact of the film stuns the viewer. The director's comments are extremely illuminating, although the film delivers more than he recalls from forty years after its creation. The film has within it an implied anti-war message appropriate to the time of its conception, however the theme of the film transcends this didactic message and makes the leap into the realm of truly great art--a work of true genius. (Note: there is likely an attempt to describe this as a "Japanese Horror Film". It has absolutely nothing of the supernatural in it. It is grimly realistic.)

5 out of 5 stars When the Devil Comes.......2007-07-12

An oni is a demon. The demon in this story takes on the form of a malevolent Noh mask, and the twilight-zonish tale of terror is one of the most bone-chilling things I've ever seen on film. Briefly, the marshlands of war-ravaged Japan during the era of feuding warlords has become briefly inhabited by displaced people, principally a middle-aged woman and her widowed dauighter, reduced to living on an animal level. They have become low-life, predatory scavangers who murder lost samurai in order to steal their property and sell it for food on the black market. Trouble starts when a man known to the women begins secretly meeting the daughter for passionate encounters, and the mother tells her that the devil will get her for her sins, and seeks to terrorize her into chastity by masquerading as a swamp demon. It goes without saying that it all leads to disaster of a most grotesque kind. Very chilling and horrific in it's eerie black-and-white with a nightmarish use of light and shadow that only thre B&W media can achieve. I recommend it to sit right next to your Twilight Zone collection, along with other classics of this kind.

5 out of 5 stars Onibaba.......2007-06-28

Creepy, compelling, and filled with eerie visual wonders, Shindo's "Onibaba" is a supernatural folk tale about jealousy and moral retribution, flavored with a pungent dose of Freudian sexual hysteria. Kei Sato is brilliant playing the animalistic, sexually voracious neighbor, and Yoshimura conveys exquisite yearning as the young widow running wildly through the reeds each night to be at his side. Otowa's fateful donning of a demonic mask--the coup de resistance of her scheme to drive them apart--is itself magical and horrifying. Don't miss "Onibaba."

5 out of 5 stars Can You Dig it?.......2006-10-18

The general belief that the 1960's was the ground-zero for massive sociological upheaval is one that generally forgets that that decade was almost half over by the time it became the era we remember it for. Until Lee Harvey Oswald's starting rifle ushered in the Love and Napalm dynasty, the first part of the 60's was really a 1950's hangover.
Roughly speaking, `The 60's' only kicked in when the Beatles Landed in America in '64 and ended when the American's landed on the moon five years later. (Were they trying to tell us something?) The so called permissive society emerged from the cultural turbulence of a `swinging London', a `flowered up' San Francisco and a burning Saigon and, as the history books would have it, appeared to challenge everything. Overt sexual, pharmaceutical and political references in entertainment became de rigor and everyone, it seemed, were cutting-edge pioneers at the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. Meanwhile on the other side of the planet, and away from `the world', it was just another day at the office for director Kaneto Shindo when he released his haunting sex/death opus Onibaba.

Onibaba (`Demon Hag') is based on a Buddhist fable and tells the story of an old woman and her young daughter-in-law during 14th century feudal Japan (or 16th, or 17th depending on who's website you use to check these things) who live in a seemingly endless swamp of high reeds and survive by murdering lost or renegade Samurai warriors.
They strip their victims of their armour to sell for food then dispose of the bodies in a deep dark ominous hole.
One day a masked stranger is passing and forces the old woman to help him find his way to Kyoto. She asks him why he hides his face behind a creepy demon-Noh mask and he tells her that he is so beautiful it would blind her to look at him. She tricks him by leading him to the hole where he falls in. Her curiosity gets the better of her and she climbs down into the hole littered with her rotting victims to see the man's `beautiful face' which turns out to be more Robin Williams than Robbie Williams. Disappointed, she takes the mask and uses it to disguise herself as a demon to scare her daughter-in-law away from the door of a man she is having an illicit affair with and who, she believes, will run away and leave her alone to fend for herself. The plan backfires when the mask clings to her face turning her into the demon she pretends to be.

The hole is the key element here and is a constant presence throughout the film and seems to represent both the womb and the crypt; the entrance at which life and death pass each other to and from this world and the next. The old woman's desperate venture into the hole for a glimpse of beauty mirrors her hope that perhaps there is still some vestige of beauty within her. Her discovery reveals there isn't, thus setting in motion her `girl who cried demon' comeuppance.
Onibaba's psychosexual symbolism and nudity is treated in an offhand manner, unlike western movies of the period which would, if only they could, have turned this into the films primary selling point. Onibaba rendered the `progressive free West' way behind the game in terms of what was `happening' in an age where taboos were supposed to have been broken every ten minutes. Onibaba was immediately banned on its release in the U.K and only given an `X' certificate in 1968 with cuts. It would be 1994 before we were considered grown up enough to see the uncut version. So much for the `let it all hang out' generation's brave new world.

5 out of 5 stars Weird, great film........2006-09-14

This movie wasn't what I was expecting; people referred to it as a "horror film" but it really isn't. It's creepy and weird and sort of riveting. I liked it a lot and will definitely recommend it to others. A very interesting film.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hiding the True Source....Wallace Wattles, Where Are You? .......2007-07-18

Not to take anything away from Napoleon Hill, but "The Science of Getting Rich" was written by Wallace Wattles nearly 100 years ago. Using his title and message for this product and only obliquely referring to "and other sources" besides Hill is inherently dishonest. Procter is admired and recognized in his own right for expanding and interpreting the message for a new age. And he's made a very good living at it. Why now hide the original source?

1 out of 5 stars This guy sucks. He's an idiot.......2007-04-14

Bob Proctor has a very annoying way of speaking and he sounds like an idiot. He rambles on incessantly about nothing in particular. He is so verbose. He says so much junk that isn't necessary instead of getting to the darn point! The same goes for his assistant. This DVD sucks. I couldn't take it anymore after a while, because he just wasn't going anywhere and wasn't saying anything that I hadn't heard before from Napoleon Hill. I would recommend reading and listening to the products by Napoleon Hill instead of this idiot Proctor. Proctor is a cheap, really bad rip-off of Napoleon Hill. Seriously, I think this Bob Proctor guy has a low IQ. He sounds stupid. I don't want to have a stupid guy as my teacher. Also, Rhonda Bryne's "The Secret" is a bad product also!

5 out of 5 stars If you liked Proctor in The Secret, you'll love this exceptionally good 100 minutes live ..........2007-02-22

If you've never seen or heard Bob Proctor, let me tell you a little about the man. He is one of America's best philosophers in the area of attracting wealth. He doesn't hide the fact that he did not develop these ideas, he simply has studied them for over 40 years, and is the best I've ever seen at delivering them. As he says in the seminar, he has "bragging rights" about the material, because none of it is his. Most of the ideas come from the book Think & Grow Rich, but he has a way of delivering the material that gets you to believe, and that is the key! I thoroughly enjoyed this recently recorded program from begining to end, and would recommend it to anyone serious about attracting more wealth into their lives ... I can't imagine a better performance from this 71 year old amazing man!

Jude Law makes the term emotional vampire literal in this somber, restrained tale of a modern-day bloodsucker in London. As the improbably named medical researcher Steven Grlscz (pronounced "grilsh"), he's a cool charmer who woos lonely women and feeds off them at the height of their emotional intensity. He begins his seduction of Elina Löwensohn (who played a vampire herself in Nadja) just as relentless police detective Timothy Spall starts an investigation of him for the murder of his former lover Kerry Fox. It's the start of an unusual battle of wits.

Equal parts AIDS metaphor, ancient myth with a modern twist, and shrewd mind game, Immortality (originally released as The Wisdom of Crocodiles) is an art-movie interpretation of the vampire myth, too chic and bloodless to be compelling but curiously fascinating in its way. Leong Po-chih directs with clockwork precision and emotional restraint, elegantly creating a handsome but impersonal world where Grlscz's painful need for love is an extreme symptom of modern life. Law plays his part as a fascinating paradox, hiding his feelings and schemes behind a mask of impenetrable ennui that periodically bursts in a gush of sorrow and disappears just as fast, while Löwensohn is almost as hard to read with her angular face and unusual accent. The meticulous detail and cool images make this more a dispassionate mind game than a horror movie, where the ideas never quite come to life but become a curious enigma. --Sean Axmaker

2 out of 5 stars Immortality- At a Price.......2007-06-12

This is yet another film I purchased because Jack Davenport is in the cast. His part is very small and his haircut is not so good. But he does exhibit some sexy, boyish charm. Jude Law is the star of the film about a vampire who preys on vulnerable women. He is creepy and maipulative and feeds on love. He believes if he can find a woman to love him "perfectly", he will stop. There are some very bloody scenes and one tracheotomy scene that is absurd. I suppose it is an interesting variation on the vampire theme.

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom of Crocs.......2007-06-08

This is a movie from say 1998. At first I wasn't sure about whether I liked it or not. It is now one of my favorite Jude Law movies. This movie portrays a man who is mysterious, vampirish, soul-less but finds the person which brings him into a soulful relationship and even with a conflicted mind as to how to deal with it. I love this movie. Great acting.

4 out of 5 stars THE WISDOM OF CROCODILES.......2007-01-18

This movie shows up on late night cable once in a while. I caught it because I was intrigued that a Hong Kong director was used. Years ago, I only paid attention to Jude Law because someone said he resembled a young Anthony Hopkins channeling Hannibal Lector. Well, he's not playing the young Doctah Lectah in the movie so catch him in this nice movie to see why its a shame he didn't get to play the character (better this than ALFIE.) His character like Hugh Grant's character in About A Boy targets undervalued women. Strangely, this movie reminds me of Whit Stillman's Metropolitan which I just watched yesterday and is also about an undervalued woman.

2 out of 5 stars Sigh.......2006-12-31

WHY, JUDE, WHY?! I thought this movie was completely boring. I felt the plot made little sense and the characters were lame. Wish I hadn't bought it.

3 out of 5 stars A decent attempt..........2006-11-10

I like Jude Law. It seems like what gets forgotten when women are gushing about his looks is that he's a really great actor. He has enormous range and I've never been let down by his performance, and this movie didn't change my opinion.

I also think Elina Löwensohn is delightful. She's cute, but not in a conventional way, and that makes her interesting.

Still, good talent couldn't save this movie. "Immortality" is basically a vampire story without any of the trappings of your typical vampire tale. Jude Law, the vampire, is not afraid of the sun. He has a reflection. On the surface, he's just an eccentric guy living in London and seducing women.

Elina Löwensohn is a tough engineer, and in her Law meets his match. The plot of the movie focuses on their love affair and the tension that builds as you wonder if she'll survive. A secondary plot revolves around a police detective who's discovered on of Law's victims and has become suspicious of him.

The problem is that the two plotlines don't really tie together, and that seems to be a theme for the entire movie. The film can't decide what it wants to be. Sometimes it seems like an erotic thriller, similar to "The Hunger." At other times it's trying to be a tragic romance. There's even a bit of philosophy and action thrown into the mix. Ultimately, the movie is interesting and the acting is great, but it doesn't leave you feeling satisfied.
