One of the unforeseen (and hugely profitable) benefits of the first Pink Panther movie was the popularity of the cartoon cat from that film's classic credits sequence. Added on a hunch by director Blake Edwards and concocted by the DePatie-Freleng animation team, the slinky pink feline immediately spawned his own series of cartoons, first for theatrical release and later for television. The saga is gathered in The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection, five discs of 124 cartoons, plus extras. This would have to be considered the ultimate such collection, and more than the average fan could handle in a few sittings (or a few dozen). But they're all here.

When United Artists commissioned David DePatie and Friz Freleng (whose new company was born from the eclipse of the old Warner Bros. cartoon unit) to make freestanding Pink Panther cartoons, their first effort struck gold. Literally: The Pink Phink won the Oscar for best animated short subject, and is still a prime example of circa-1964 line drawing and visual humor. Most of the early shorts display a sure sense of timing and a cheeky feel for the era; they were directed by Freleng and Hawley Pratt (Pratt's design for the Pink Panther had been selected by Blake Edwards from dozens of offerings at the time of the first feature). In two of the first handful, Sink Pink and Pink Ice, the Pink Panther himself speaks stray lines of dialogue, a mistake that would not be repeated later. One unwelcome aural intrusion: some of the cartoons here have a laugh track from the TV series, even on the Oscar-nominated Pink Blueprint.

Animation voiceover veterans of the era chimed in with narration or voices for other characters; for instance, the indefatigable Paul Frees does the narration on Phinkfinger, a funny spoof of 007-style spy movies. But most of the cartoons are wordless, which is one reason they remained popular internationally for so many years. The main reason is the slinky character of the Panther, a mischievous hipster who could be either the instrument of chaos or the victim, depending on the cartoon. The plots tend toward the cartoon verities: the necessity of catching a mouse or silencing an alarm clock, for instance. A documentary, Behind the Feline, gives a fine account of the history of the character; it is also bundled on a previous boxed set, The Pink Panther Film Collection. Useful new extras include a portrait of Friz Freleng by his daughters, an illuminating interview with animator-director Art Leonardi, and a delightful vignette with Leonardi instructing us on how to quickly draw the Pink Panther. The opening-title sequences from five Pink Panther movies are included. Throughout the cartoons and the extras, you will be reminded of one incalculable boost to the series: Henry Mancini's lithe, foxy theme music, which surely had much to do with the character's enduring fame. Mancini gets an onscreen shout-out in Pink, Plunk, Plink, in which the Panther tries to inject his theme into an orchestral performance of Beethoven's Fifth. --Robert Horton

Description

The Pink Panther is - paws down - the world's grooviest cartoon star. In 1964, this pink-inked feline slinked onto the opening credits of Blake Edwards' caper film by the same name and threatened to steal the entire show. Sleek, sophisticated and witty, the animation, produced by Friz Freleng and David H. DePatie, was a stylish departure from its contemporaries…and an instant hit. A subsequent short film, The Pink Phink, would go on to win* an Oscar® and spawn a celebrated series of six-minute cartoons featuring the sly cat. Now, for the first time, 124 cartoons produced by Freleng and DePatie between 1964 and 1980 are collected here in a swingin' 5-disc set. With over 14 hours of "pink comedy," you can't help but lick your whiskers!

5 out of 5 stars Memory Lane!.......2007-08-09

Watching these dvd's is like a delightful trip down memory lane. The Pink Panther/Inspector Clouseau cartoons are hilarious! Just as good as you remember them!

4 out of 5 stars All The "Oldies".......2007-07-29

This is what you want if you want a collection of the old Pink Panther stuff. Neat how they use music and very little dialogue; however, my 11-year-old got very frustrated with the lack of talking in these! She would look in the beginning credits, and if there were no voices listed, she'd say, "Again??! No talking again!?!"
I love these, although they are very short so you have to watch in short chunks of time. Some people would like that, though, I'm sure. Many of the storylines are very predictable--you can see the end coming a mile away--but it's worth it to just see the cool Panther and the very cool music playing. A good purchase for me.

4 out of 5 stars Keeps my daughter rivoted.......2007-07-25

My two year old daughter just loves this stuff. My 63 year old dad also enjoys watching them.

The only thing I don't like is the "madatory viewing" of the producing company, and the "burning copies is stealing" videos at the first of the disk. Just get to the episodes already! but then what dvd doesn't have that stuff these days.

Great buy! I love the pink panther cartoons. They did not include the Ant and the Aardvark series though. Apart from that, its a good collection to own.

I got this as a birthday present and I love the collection. There are some episodes that I had not seen before. The quality is also really good.

Haven't I been waiting long enough already??? :) I can't WAIT to see these cartoons. I LOVED them as a kid. And I guess in some ways I'm STILL a kid. Good for me!!! :)

5 out of 5 stars "That Aardvark Can Bust Up A Party Faster Than A Skunk In An Air Conditioner".......2007-06-07

Imagine my utter surprise and delight when I found out these 70's comedy classics finally made it to DVD. I mean, how can you NOT love a stubborn Aardvark who talks like Jackie Mason and an Ant who sounds like Dean Martin going head to head in one bizarre hilarious chase after another.

And EXTRA bonus cool points for the great jazz music that accompanied these chases, played by some of the best West Coast jazz cats of the time (like Pete Candoli, Ray Brown, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Rowles etc), heck, how many cartoons have musician credits at the beginning?

But this YESTERDAY!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Forgotten Treasure.......2007-05-18

I bought this for my eight year old daughter. I never sat and watched it with her but listened to the cartoon dialog as she watched. I had forgotten how funny the Ant Aardvark cartoons were, especially the sound-alike voices of Dean Martin for the Ant and Henny Youngman for the Aardvark. I remembered that I enjoyed the Ant-Aardvark cartoons more than the Pink Panther when on Saturday morning TV because of this dialog. It's great.

5 out of 5 stars Must Get For Classic Cartoon Fans!.......2007-05-15

All 17 episodes are included on this DVD (UNCUT and not speeded up...aka Classic Media). These cartoons are hilarious. If you remember watching "The Pink Panther Show" back in the day, you will love this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars The Ant & The Aardvark.......2007-05-14

What a cool blast from the past this collection is. Just recently I saw John Byner on David Letterman's Late Show and in his piece on the show he did the voices for both the Ant and the Aardvark. What a cool surprise. Byner did both their voices. The Aardvark's voice was patterned on comedian Jackie Mason while the Ant's voice sounded a little like Dean Martin. Thanx for reissuing this collection, both parents and kids can enjoy this fun and classic cartoons all over again.

Amazon.com essential video

Cue the Henry Mancini music and watch out for Cato--the gist of the Pink Panther series has been gathered in a six-disc boxed set. At the center of it is Peter Sellers's incarnation of inspector Jacques Clouseau, a hopelessly bumbling detective with a genius for resting his hands in the wrong place (on the surface of a spinning globe, for instance) and mangling the English language.

Writer-director Blake Edwards cast Peter Ustinov as Clouseau in The Pink Panther, but Ustinov dropped out just before shooting began. Edwards (who recounts this story in a spotty commentary track included here) and Sellers bonded over their affection for Laurel and Hardy, and immediately transformed the character of Clouseau into a walking sight gag. The first film has a delicious swinging sixties vibe, while jewel thief David Niven, Claudia Cardinale, and Capucine occupy as much screen time as Sellers. Sellers really hits his stride in A Shot in the Dark, an elegantly funny tale of Clouseau sleuthing out a murder investigation. This one introduced Herbert Lom, as the increasingly frazzled Inspector Dreyfus, and Burt Kwouk, as Clouseau's houseboy-nemesis Cato. Sellers and Edwards, whose relationship was stormy, put Clouseau aside for over 10 years, until a trilogy of mid-1970s comedies restored the character to commercial (and dare we say cultural) primacy.

Unfortunately, the very funny comeback picture, Return of the Pink Panther, is absent from this set due to rights issues with the studios involved. The Pink Panther Strikes Again has Dreyfus going bananas and targeting Clouseau; Revenge of the Pink Panther puts Clouseau in a hilarious series of disguises, climaxing in a wonderfully mounted sequence in Hong Kong. (Throughout the series, the calm, classical staging of gags by Blake Edwards reminds you of what a lost art this has become.) Trail of the Pink Panther looks better now than it did when originally released in 1982, shortly after Sellers's death; it's a batch of unused Sellers routines from previous pictures, strung together with a loose plot. In other words, it's a "deleted scenes" extra, and quite funny at times.

Subsequent efforts Curse of the Pink Panther and Son of the Pink Panther are neither included nor mentioned. A half-hour documentary gives pleasant memories from Edwards, but feels incomplete. The cartoon Panther gets his own 11-minute mini-doc, plus six cartoon shorts including the Oscar-winning "The Pink Phink." --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Comedy, Pure and Simple.......2007-07-26

Let me start by saying, I agree with some of the other reviewers; Peter Sellers is the Pink Panthers movies. So any Panther movie not including Sellers should not be included here. These are all classics, and Sellers plays our bumbling, intrepid Chief Inspector like no other has the right to try. These are great for the laugh and there is actually (gasp) something resembling a story line here. Buy this set, watch them, and prepare to laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-05-09

Just 4 stars. The missing one is for the missing "The Return of the Pink Panther (1974)". If you are looking for extreme and healthy fun, no one could it be better than Sellers to pop ups your laughings, he was great doing any role. This is a delicious collection, just improve the one buying the missing "..return", and of course..."The Party"

4 out of 5 stars Review of The Pink Panther Film Collection.......2007-01-17

It is absolutely first class entertainment. It is intelligent, witty, silly, "classy" - something we rarely achieve these days. Gather your family and give them an education in how to develop a keen sense of humor or, even better, invite your friends to watch - don't forget the martinis.

My dad was always talking about how he wanted this boxed set on DVD since he found out it existed. Christmas rolled around and he hadn't mentioned it in a while, so I surprised him with it and he was thrilled. The set is very nicely packaged, very high quality, and looks very nice. Also, my dad was pleased to see a couple of the lesser known movies (he said two are very common on TV but the others you hardly ever see). He's very happy with it, and I am very happy with my purchase. Well worth the money!

Peter Sellers's third go-around as the prideful but bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau is funny enough, but this 1975 Blake Edwards revival of the Sellers-Clouseau connection is a little weak in comparison to predecessors The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark (both made in 1964). Costar Christopher Plummer actually gets some of the most interesting screen time as a retired cat burglar whom Clouseau accuses of getting back into the business. (If it sounds like there might be a To Catch a Thief vibe mixed in here, you're right.) Herbert Lom is hilarious as Clouseau's psychologically eroding boss, and Clouseau's ritualistic collisions with valet Cato (Burt Kwouk) are great examples of Edwards's delicious comic timing. --Tom Keogh

I find it's not funny at all. I don't know why British-style comedies usually do not attract me. So far, the only British comedies I like are Mr. Bean, Benny Hill show and Charlie Chaplin.

5 out of 5 stars The only way to complete the collection.......2007-05-11

This motion picture, is not included in the MGM collection, it's a need to get it, to complete the PINK PANTHER series.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good for a sequal !!!!.......2007-03-26

Hey, for the third installment of the Pink Panther franchise. It's not that bad. The acting was excellent as ususal. The plot is a simple one. The famous Pink Panther diamond is stolen once again and all clues are pointing to that rouge jewel thief "The Phantom". Clouseau is brought in to solve the case. But there is one problem, this time "The Phantom" aka ,Sir Charles Lytton really didn't do it this time. So, now both Closeau and Lytton must race to figure out this mystery before they are both killed.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not the best.......2007-01-23

One of better movies from Jacq Clusoe series, although not the best. There are some dull moments but also plenty of laughs supported by Peter Sellers antics. Recommended for "Pink Panther" series funs but also for those who love European comedies in general.

    5 out of 5 stars it's a no brainer.......2007-01-20

Never did understand why the powers that be did not include this title in the DVD Boxed Set. For the serious collector of Peter Sellers or Pink Panther, this movie is a must have. Personally, I think it's the funniest out of all of them. Purchase with no fear my humor loving friend.

I decided to buy them the DVD so they could watch Pink Panther anytime they wanted. Great to watch my old favorites which now I share with my grandchildren!

4 out of 5 stars The Original Cool Cat.......2007-03-28

From the beautiful graphics on the package cover to the 27 cartoons within, this classic release is in every way a delight. So why not five stars for the felicitous feline? Simply because of the annoying ad you have to skip every time to watch a cartoon. What's more, the ad urges viewers not to steal movies. Ironically, it's addressed to people who actually bought the DVD, the only audience you can be sure didn't steal these cartoons by illegally downloading them.

So this becomes a prolonged exercise in punishing the innocent (I've checked two other volumes in the series and they both have the ad). Why doesn't MGM pay to put their anti-theft message on television where the guilty parties can view it instead of making the buyer pay to see it? I don't know if the deluxe set with all the individual discs in it also has the ad on every disc, but the menu opens with the same graphics, so I suspect it does.

Although I waited for this release with anticipation, it's not worth it having to skip the ad every time to get to the cartoons. Enough is enough. It's time to rebel. As with Shout Factory releases, I will not be running to buy any more MGM cartoons on DVD until I know they are not bogged down with ads.

If anyone could step into the huge shoes of comedic genius left by Peter Sellers as bumbling French policeman Jacques Clouseau, it's Steve Martin. Sellers made Clouseau a true icon of character and comedy in five Pink Panther movies in the '60s and '70s; Martin has arguably already attained Sellers' rank as an entertainment talent, so it only makes sense that he became Clouseau's heir apparent for the inevitable screen resurrection. This updated story of the priceless eponymous diamond purloined under mysterious circumstance and pursued with Keystone Cop-like antics by Clouseau is a frivolous yet winning pastiche of physical gags and riffs on Clouseau's hilariously impenetrable accent. A famous French football coach (Jason Statham in cameo mode) is wearing the stone, set as an engagement ring for his pop star fiance (Beyonce Knowles). But before a packed stadium crowd of thousands, the ring disappears from his finger as he falls dead from a poisoned dart. The wisp of a plot is secondary to the pratfalls of Martin's prim, prissy, and utterly inept Clouseau. He's brought onto the case by France's top cop (a drolly sophisticated Kevin Kline) who wants Clouseau to fail in a scheme to make himself a national hero. Even in a world where jokes about Viagra, flatulence and other familiar sophomoric subjects are required, Martin makes his Clouseau singularly memorable. You'll be fully expecting Clouseau to shatter priceless antiques, mangle his pronunciations (hamburger, anyone?), and prevail in the end, but Martin carries it off, giving homage to Sellers at the same time that he remakes the character in his own image as a comic master. --Ted Fry

4 out of 5 stars WHERE DID THEY GET A PINK PANTHER DIAMOND?.......2007-06-08

This is one of the few movies that I have enjoyed with Steve Martin in it.
I wouldn't have recognized Kevin Kline but his character Dreyfus was played to perfection.

I was more intrigued with wanting to see the acting abilities of Jean Reno and Stratham - after seeing their other movies.

The Pink Panther has always been an eye catcher and the music [his theme song] catches your attention whenever it is played.
Loved the comedy of Inspector Jacques Clouseau and his partner Gilbert Ponton [Jean Reno].
The building scenes and scenery was beautiful - both New York and Paris.
Most enjoyable was the featurettes and the informtion on the making of the movie.

Definitely Recommend -- a great addition to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Martin is the New Clouseau.......2007-06-05

Sacre Bleu, Steve Martin is not just funny in the remake of The Pink Panther - he is priceless. This is mostly due to his outrageous French accent. During the scene toward the end, where Clouseau is working with an American dialect coach to say, "I would like to buy a hamburger," I laughed so hard that I couldn't breathe and had a coughing fit. My stomach ached, too. Wow. That's good stuff.

How the mystery is solved at the end is dumb - I wish they had put more cleverness into the whodunnit aspect. Some mystery lovers may feel insulted at the hastily slapped together resolution.

3 out of 5 stars Not a disaster but not particularly good.......2007-05-20

The latest and least unsuccessful post-Peter Sellers incarnation of The Pink Panther isn't a particularly good movie, but it's certainly a lot better than Blake Edwards last three disastrous bloody-minded attempts to prove that he was the genius of the series and didn't need Sellers (who, to be fair, had he lived was planning to pull the same stunt on Edwards by replacing him with Clive Donner). Steve Martin certainly doesn't make the part his own but at least he fares better than Roberto Begnini, though the accent is wrong in all the unfunny ways. It doesn't need to be a Sellers impression, but remotely amusing would have been nice, especially since director Shawn Levy hasn't a clue how to stage a decent pratfall, rendering much of the physical comedy lukewarm.

Along with being the only one of the series not to be shot in Scope, most of the old faithful setups of the series are discarded - Kevin Kline's rather flat Dreyfuss isn't trying to kill Clouseau all the time (no nervous tic or accidental dismemberment either) and Kato isn't constantly attacking him (though this is reworked as Clouseau constantly attempting to attack his assistant, who effortlessly pre-empts him every time) - with not enough new to fill in the void they leave. Indeed, in a sign of its troubled post-production that saw it shelved for the best part of a year, one of the one of the funniest scenes (a surreal airplane sequence that has nothing to do with the plot) got deleted, as did Dreyfuss' motive for bringing in Clouseau to the case, but at least they're both in the DVD extras.

Sadly, Jean Reno is almost entirely wasted as Clouseau's sidekick in the film. Looking like he's just had plastic surgery (it's easy to understand why he avoids the clean shaven look: it's scary in a faceless man kind of way), his only genuinely funny moment is a brief dance routine, which at least puts him one up on the one of the film's unbilled guest stars. In a cameo as a thinly disguised James Bond ("006. You know what that means?" "You're one away from the big time?"), Clive Owen proves that while he may have all the dramatic ability of a block of wood with woodworm in `serious' films, when it comes to comedy he's even worse (think Charlton Heston in trying-to-prove-he-has-a-sense-of-humor mode, only much worse). His delivery of even the simplest lines is astonishingly stilted even by his standards, making you wonder if he's unable to speak English unless it's spelt out for him phonetically. Still, if nothing else his leaden touch proves what an unmitigated catastrophe he would have been as 007, and it's a fairly brief moment in a film that's watchable with a few laughs. There's no reason to watch it other than completism, but there's a lot worse out there.

5 out of 5 stars My 11-year-old daughter LOVES this movie.......2007-05-14

Okay, it's not Peter Sellers, but let's face it... some of those old 'original' Pink Panthers were real stinkers! Don't kid yourself. And as with much of life, it's better to suspend some of the cinephile's critical urges when trying to enjoy anything that's just funny.

If you're able to give Steve Martin a chance, and I admit it took a couple of viewings for me (thank my daughter for the repeat viewings), you'll find this to be a pretty clever and very funny gag-fest.

If you want undiluted and critically acclaimed good fun, buy the original Peter Cook and Dudley Moore version of 'Bedazzled.' Otherwise, consider the source and enjoy this Pink Panther with your kids, who will begin speaking in a preposterously bad French accent like most of the actors in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie for kid's in a long time.......2007-04-09

My children laugh through this movie from beginning to end. They have watched it so many times that I have lost count. It is replayed with every friend that comes over for a sleepover as it is one of their favorite movies. It tickles the funny bone of a child just right and is much cleaner than most of the stuff out there for kids. I would recommend it to any parent who wants a nice movie to entertain the kids. It is not art and it is not educational but it is a really fun 90 minutes of slapstick comedy.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Peter Sellers Giftset.......2007-03-16

This is a great cross section of Peter Sellers' films. Peter Sellers is well known as Inspector Clouseau as he first appeared in THE PINK PANTHER. My favorite here is WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT even though Sellers is not the main character. Peter Sellers character is that of the longhaired psychoanalyst Dr. Fritz Fassbender who is crazier than his patients. The office visit scene with Sellers and patient Peter O'Toole is a classic. Sellers' character in that film just so off-the-wall. THE PARTY is very. It surrounds around Sellers as a Hollywood extra mistakenly invited to a who's who wild house party. Sellers really makes this film work. Sellers gets top billing in 1967's CASINO ROYALE filmed as a James Bond spoof rather than the genuine article. Essentially Sellers is chosen as a replacement (one of several) for the genuine James Bond (David Niven) who is now in retirement to play and defeat Le Chiffre (Orson Welles) at baccarat at the Casino Royale. Sellers' role is actually small but still memorable. The laughs in CASINO ROYALE are hit and miss in this mixed bag with several directors at the helm that really lacks cohesion but still manages to amuse.

This set of films contains excellent scores from two brilliant composers. The inimitable Henry Mancini scored both THE PINK PANTHER and THE PARTY. Burt Bacharach, near the top of his game for capturing that wild innovative 60's sound scored both WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT and CASINO ROYALE which featured great recorded tunes for Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

The fourth Pink Panther film with Peter Sellers and directed by Blake Edwards is easily the most over-the-top, but it's still pretty entertaining. The story finds Clouseau's former boss (Herbert Lom) totally insane after years of enduring the bumbling detective, and sequestered in a castle with a death-ray gun. Clouseau has to stop him from using the weapon on the world, and his efforts to do so make for some choice, Edwards-style slapstick. The quotient of destruction (a Clouseau staple) is higher than average, but there is also real wit--particularly in a final scene where Lom re-creates his most famous role as the monster from the 1962 Phantom of the Opera. --Tom Keogh

    Description

Peter Sellers is "in top form" (Cue) in this zany adventure that finds the accident-prone InspectorClouseau using some of his most outlandish disguises ever. With "ferociously funny karate encounters" (Time) with the enigmatic Cato (Burt Kwouk) and dangerous intrigue with a sexy Russian spy (Lesley-Anne Down), this hysterical comedy will strike your funny bone! Driven over the edge by the maddeningly incompetent Clouseau, former Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) commandeers a doomsday device and threatens to destroy the world. His only demand? Clouseau's death! But thanks to his nemesis' dumb luck, the assassins hired to kill him can't seem to finish the job - although Clouseau may do it himself by tripping over his own two feet!

    4 out of 5 stars It's Not English. It's Not French. It's Frenglish........2007-07-21

"The Pink Panther Strikes Again" is one of the defining moments of my early film going experience. I saw it when I was thirteen (sat through it twice) at my neighborhood bijou. I went to my parochial school and during recess related the film's juiciest parts to my male buddies. I was overheard by a nosy female classmate and she told Mother Superior about my off color remarks. After getting tongue lashed about my impure thoughts I was sent home(this is punishment?) and told to contemplate and maybe make an act of contrition. Oh, well. The movie? In my mind Peter Sellers is the greatest comic force to ever hit the silver screen. After a series of box office bombs and ten years after "A Shot in the Dark"(the best in the Clouseau series) Sellers revived the character in "The Return of the Pink Panther" in 1975. That film was a mixed bag but a box office success nonetheless so another entry was inevitable. In 1976 "Strikes Again" came out. I think this is the second best "Pink Panther" film. It's a mixture of witty verbal gags and over-the-top slapstick. For the most part it works but there are some misses. Sellers was incapable of phoning in a performance but to my mind seems a little tired here. I think that has more to do with the heart attack he had recently suffered than any boredom with the character. Herbert Lom, however, as Clouseau's nemesis Chief Inspector Dreyfus has never been better. Lom was usually relegated to supporting roles and director Blake Edwards gives him the opportunity to chew the scenery in royal fashion and he goes for broke here. Another bonus is the presence of the delectable Lesley-Anne Down as the Russian assassin sent to kill Clouseau but falls in love with him instead. Down gave good performances in "The Betsey" and "The Great Train Robbery" later but never achieved the success that her talents merited. I would recommend this film as a good entry level for those unfamiliar with Sellers' comic genius and then graduate them to "Dr. Strangelove".

5 out of 5 stars The Pink Panther Strikes Again.......2007-07-05

The fourth installment in Edwards's riotous Pink Panther series revolves, like the other spy-movie spoofs, around the ingenious comic talents of Sellers, whose klutzy Clouseau is hilariously straight-faced and pratfall-prone. Lom hams it up as master villain Dreyfuss, while Lesley-Ann Down adds some kittenish sex appeal as a slinky Soviet spook who gives up the chase when she falls for the clueless Frenchman. Wonderfully lunatic sequences--like a slow-motion kung-fu fight--and plenty of silly sight gags will keep you in stitches.

5 out of 5 stars This One is Hilarious.......2007-06-01

I love Peter Sellers and I have three Pink Panther DVDs. The first one, "The Pink Panther," has one hilarious scene at the end which is worth having just for that; the second, "The Pink Panther Returns," is fairly funny; but I found "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" absolutely side-splitting - a must-have in your comedy collection.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST PANTHER EVER!!.......2006-12-17

Sometimes sequels are inferior to the original but not in this case.

This is the 4th Inspector Clouseau movie (after PINK PANTHER, A SHOT IN THE DARK, THE PINK PANTHER RETURNS) and they had perfected it. The combination of action, the clumsiness of Peter Sellers's character, the music score by Henry Mancini, the fight scenes with Kato, the crazy Inspector Dreyfuss and of course the classic "DOES YOUR DOG BITE?" are all there in the right amount and combination.

Also, the movie is set during the time it was filmed in which was 1976.

If you only own Pink Panther movie ever, this is the one. The previous three movies are funny but IMO drag a bit at times.

The next one after this one (THE REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER) came close to this one but never eclipsed it.

5 out of 5 stars "Does Your Dog Bite?".......2006-11-04

This happens to be my favorite Pink Panther movie so far. I have seen The Pink Panther, A Shot In The Dark, Inspector Clouseau, The Return of the Pink Panther, this one, and The Pink Panther{2006}. This one happens to be the funniest in my opinion. It has a great cast. Peter Sellers as Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau, Herbert Lom as Former Cheif Inspector Dreyfus, Lesley- Anne Down as Olga Bariosova, Colin Blakely as Section Director Alec Drummond, and Burt Kwouk as Cato Fong. Now, I will give you a quote from this movie. Clouseau is at a German Hotel when he sees a dog.
He asks the owner of the hotel, "Does you dog bite?" The owner says "No." Clouseau reaches down to pet the dog. It bites him. Then he says "I thought you said your dog doesn't bite." The owner of the hotel says "That is not my dog." That was my review.

The kids watch it over and over and it brings back memories for me.

The comics themselves are very simplistic, very little dialog and such. But that is what makes it great. Just good old fashion humor.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Volume 1--catchy music too! .......2006-08-09

I watched most of these films on a local TV station in 1980-1981 that aired these 30-minute shows on the weekend. I am so happy that they are finally on DVD! The picture quality is clean and sharp on most of the films I saw! The films win on the background music alone, as they have been stuck in my head for over 25 years now! Henry Mancini knew how to come up with these strong melodies with his orchestra. I'm still humming to his other music from these films along with his famous Pink Panther theme. Several times, the Pink Panther outsmarts everybody--the dismantling of a construction project in Prefabricated Pink, how he grants the third wish on the fairy godmother by putting skates on her in one film (so funny!), how he even one ups a robber who had a ticking time bomb in the Pink Package Plot and so forth. A few films are repetitive with the Pink Panther getting chased up hilly sidewalks by the MPs or construction workers. I can't tell you how many times I've been laughing at these films--they are so funny! The films are still fresh and timeless to watch today--almost 40 years later to others, but 25-26 years later for me. It will get you just as hooked as the latest movie to come out on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Gave Me Pink Eye.......2006-03-25

Volume 2 of this 3-volume set is not as good as Volume 1 which has the episode where Henry Mancini applauds the pink feline orchestra conductor and where you hear the Pink Panther speak. It is much better than Volume 3, though. For those who like the cartoons with only background music (that's what gives this cartoon so much charm), there are no voices on this DVD and, even better, a laugh track only ruins two episodes. This DVD also includes one of my favorites: "Pink Valient." If you really like PP, definitely get the 5-disc set that includes all three volumes of the Classic Cartoon Collection along with two additional discs with more cartoons and extras (no Aardvark episodes and I think there is only one episode of The Inspector, however). The cartoons on Volume 2 are from 1967-68 and include the following 27 cartoons:

Pink of the Litter: PP is a trash collector who finds disposal more of a difficulty.
In the Pink: PP joins a gym and of course makes life miserable for another exerciser.
Jet Pink: I remember this ep well because it is featured on Viewmaster reels I had as a kid (and still have). PP tries his hand (uh, paw) at being a pilot.
Pink Paradise: PP visits an island and runs into a hunter and his dog. Of course, any mahem PP causes will be blamed on the dog.
Pinto Pink: Another ep featured on my Viewmaster reels. PP tries to ride a hilarious horse.
Congratulations, It's Pink: PP sets out to steal a picnic basket but gets a baby in a basket instead. At one point, he leaves it with an Indian couple and the husband becomes irate and attacks the white trading post guy. Definitely not PC!
Prefabricated Pink: PP is on a construction site and causes destruction.
The Hand is Pinker Than the Eye: PP sneaks into a magician's home and encounters magic props and an amorous rabbit.
Pink Outs: Weak episode. Just various clips that end with a pink screen.

Sky Blue Pink: PP tries his paw at kite-flying and terrorizes his neighbor so much he becomes the Red Baron.
Pinkadilly Circus: After a man removes a nail from PP's foot, PP is so grateful, he insists on being the man's slave. The man finds good use for PP against his nagging wife.
Psychedelic Pink: (Laugh Track=LT) Very strange ep, hence the title. PP visits the Bizarre Book Shop and wants to read "The Love Life of the Panther" (that's funny). From there, the ep goes all over the place.
Come on in the Water's Pink: PP visits Bicep Beach and competes with a body builder.
Put-Put Pink: PP builds a motorbike.
G.I. Pink: PP joins the Army and the nation has never been safer.
Lucky Pink: A robber tries to get rid of an unlucky horseshoe but PP keeps returning it to him.
The Pink Quarterback: PP chases after a rolling quarter that could buy him a hot dog or a hamburger (it must be the 1960s).
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Pink: PP builds a house in the view of an observation telescope.

Pink Valiant: A favorite of mine. A king hires PP to rescue his kidnapped daughter (who just runs around screaming). The kidnapper ends up as the one who really needs saving.
The Pink Pill: PP slips on a banana peel and winds up in the hospital with an annoying roommate.
Prehistoric Pink: PP and his stone-aged buddy try various ways to move a rectangular stone.
Pink in the Clink: (LT) PP is forced to assist a burglar.
Little Beaux Pink: PP has run-ins with a cowboy who doesn't like PP's grazing sheep.
Tickled Pink: PP asks his fairy godmother for roller skates and soon regrets it. He'll get even with his fairy godmother, however.
Pink Sphinx: PP is on a quest to find Rameses III with an unhelpful camel.
Pink is a Many Splintered Thing: PP becomes a lumberjack.
The Pink Package Plot: PP is forced to deliver a ticking package to the Slobvanian embassy.

Giving this one star because of a typo in the date of release? Please. I was thrilled to be able to watch my favorite childhood cartoons, and my kids love them, too. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because there is no Ant and the Aardark included.

The history of film comedy would have been much altered if Peter Ustinov had stayed in the role of Jacques Clouseau, the bumbling French police inspector in The Pink Panther. But Ustinov dropped out, the role went to Peter Sellers, and a classic character was born: suspicious, blundering, with a pompous little mustache and a sometimes impenetrable accent, Clouseau was always one step behind everybody else in the room. The Pink Panther introduced Clouseau hot on the trail of a famous jewel thief (David Niven), who may be planning to make off with an expensive gem known as the Pink Panther. Set in a European ski resort, this bubbly comedy is a wonderful dose of '60s style, from the famous Henry Mancini theme music to the presence of two of Europe's top sex symbols of the era, Claudia Cardinale and Capucine. The film also introduced the popular cartoon Pink Panther, slinking around to Mancini's music in an animated credits sequence. The film's success brought a follow-up, A Shot in the Dark, also released in 1964; after 11 years, Sellers and top comedy director Blake Edwards (10) returned with three more sequels. --Robert Horton

    4 out of 5 stars Classic British/American comedy which spawned a franchise.......2007-07-28

One thing not mentioned by other reviewers is that this film, and Peter Sellers' character of Inspector Jacques Clouseau (sounds like someone else, right?), had been meant as a one-off. My understanding is that Sellers was contracted to play a featured part, but not steal the film! Nor was his character slated to develop into a whole film series, resurrecting the physical comedy of the silent masters and emulating the deadpan of the Monseur Hurlot films. Instead, Blake Edwards' hip 60s comedy exploded with Sellers' incarnation of Clouseau, and an even more wacky "Shot In The Dark" (co-written by the Exorcist's William Peter Blatty) was the immediate follow-up. In American TV, we know about "spin-off" series, and that's really what the Clouseau films are: a spin-off of this first classic. The Pink Panther is a must for fans of the swinging 60s comedies like its sequels, like "Casino Royale", "Under The Yum-Yum Tree", "The Graduate", the Flint movies, and others. Favourite scene? The bedroom scene, with David Niven (later of "Casino Royale") and Robert Wagner (of recent "Austin Powers" fame) hiding from the inept investigator. In fact, you can't watch my favourite Blake Edward movie, "Victor/Victoria", without seeing similar classic sight gags and situations from just that bedroom scene! Buy this movie!

5 out of 5 stars The Pink Panther.......2007-07-02

The great Blake Edwards inaugurated the farcical "Panther" series in 1964 with this zesty comedy caper starring David Niven as a covetous, Cary Grant-like jewel thief. But it was Peter Sellers's brilliant performance as clumsy Inspector Clouseau--the very opposite of Niven's refined, urbane criminal--that made this a madcap classic. Goofy and fun, with an indelible, Oscar-nominated score by Henry Mancini.

4 out of 5 stars Not Very Funny, But Worth Watching........2007-05-21

Everyone is familiar with "The Pink Panther" series, everyone knows about the bumbling Inspector Clouseau, but if you've never seen the original "Pink Panther" and the first in the series you may be surprised. First off, Peter Sellers (who plays Clouseau) isn't in the starring role. That's David Niven as Sir Charles. The other thing that might surprise you is that this first entry isn't very funny. It's got a couple chuckles here and there and only one REALLY funny scene, if you ask me. Anyway, the movie takes place in Rome where Princess Dala (Claudia Cardinale) arrives at a posh resort with her legendary Pink Panther diamond which has a an image of leaping panther within it. Once there, she meets Sir Charles who arranges to have her dog stolen but whose motives seem at once unclear. Meanwhile, there's Inspector Clouseau who's at the same posh resort with his wife Madame Clouseau (Capucine). Inspector Clouseau is there to look for the legendary jewel-thief The Phantom, whom he fears may attempt to steal the Pink Panther. As irony would have it, Sir Charles is having an affair with Clouseau's wife...In another turn of events; Sir Charles' nephew George (Robert Wagner) arrives and seems to attract the attention of both Princess Dala and Madame Clouseau. The film had two hilarious scenes. The first was when both George and Sir Charles are in Madame Clouseau's room (unbeknownst to George) and than Clouseau arrives and Madame is forced to hide everyone from, well, everyone. The other scene comes at the costume party where Inspector Clouseau is waiting for The Phantom to show up and a detective dressed as zebra begins to drink from a bowl on a table. Does that sound funny? Probably not, but it's one of the scenes that made me laugh the hardest. "The Pink Panther" is still a legendary film that was probably much funnier years ago. If anything, it proves that Peter Sellers was a genius (with really low self-esteem, if you've read about him) and Blake Edwards was a great director of comedies. David Niven is also terrific as Sir Charles. This is worth seeing, but don't expect to laugh a lot.

5 out of 5 stars This is the real Pink Panther!.......2007-04-08

This one started one of the most successful series of comedy films in film history. Peter Sellers is great and so is the story. Steve Martin's 2006 release doesn't hold up to this one. I've enjoyed all of the Pink Panther films. I highly recommend it.
