WARNING: read this before you buy.......2005-10-24

The DVD has a terrible amount of advertising that you're forced to watch before you can see any of the Thomas stories. It's advertising other Thomas products, so it's actually interesting the first time through. But you'll be forced to watch the advertising EVERY time you play this. Other DVDs are programmed so you can jump straight to the menu and skip the advertising. Not this one.

Once you run the advertising gauntlet and earn the right to watch videos, they're excellent as always. But given that all the Thomas collections are excellent, you should buy something other than this one.

This is one of the nicest Thomas videos out there, in our opinion. It's just very nice how the engines work together, work out their problems together, and support each other along the way. It's particularly interesting when they show the breakdown train getting James out of the mud and onto the track again after those bad freight cars shove him off the track. They get taught a lesson in this video and it's quite nice. When the trains are getting prepared to meet the Queen, then the really shine.

This video is full of great lessons and very well done graphics. This is actually one of our favorites and it gets watched in our house quite often. My little one just loves it. Great video and a great price!

Here is Best of Thomas. Now the stories on here are good but there were alot more out there that should've been one this video. Let me start by saying that they didn't put one of the greatest stories of all time on here, Thomas Comes To Breakfast. That one was a perfect Thomas episode. Other ones that should have been on here include Thomas Gets Tricked, Trust Thomas, Thomas and Bertie's Great Race, Thomas Goes Fishing, Double Trouble, Better Late Than Ever, The Runaway, I could go on for ever but I'm sure you get my point. Thomas & Stepney and A New Friend For Thomas should not have been on here because Thomas is not the main character in both of these even though the title might have his name in it. I had to give this one 4 stars because of the numurous amount of Thomas stories that could have been on here and weren't. A part 2 of Best of Thomas might be needed. Anyway, this is a great video to buy because it does have some great Thomas moments. Let me start of by saying that viewer selected doesn't mean they have to be great. Thomas's first ever episode Thomas gets Tricked wasn't even in it. I thought Better Late than Never, Thomas comes to Breakfast, Thomas Breaks the Rules, and Thomas and Bertie's Great Race were far better than some of these like Thomas and Stepney or a New Friend for Thomas. Were they really that good. Thomas was barely in both of them. Thomas meets the Queen didn't excalty focus on Thomas. Are these viewers really stupid becasue these epiodes weren't great. And I really think they shoulda kept the Ringo Starr narrations.

Thomas the Tank Engine is a very lovable character. Which Thomas fan wouldn't love Thomas? This is a very wonderful video. It contains the stories: Thomas Gets Bumped, A New Friend for Thomas, Thomas, Percy, & the Dragon, Thomas Saves the Day, Trouble for Thomas, Thomas & Stepney, A Big Day for Thomas, Thomas Meets the Queen, and Really Useful Engine (music video). My favorite story is Thomas Meets the Queen. The video is told by George Carlin. If your child loves Thomas (himself), then he'll love this video.

Simply Superb!

As stated before, the dvds open with several minutes of commercials. My experience was that we could fast forward through some of them, except on the Thomas dvd, which forces you to watch them all. There are also several logos that you are forced to watch.

Let me tell you something - when your two-year-old son has just had surgery and has to stay at home to recover, and wants to see Thomas, the last thing he wants is a bunch of logos, fbi warnings, and commercials.

The narrators are inconsistent. I prefer the british narrators, especially Ringo, but this set is a real mess, mixing the actors and wandering in and out of sequence.

There also seems to be an emphasis on big messy accidents in this set, which gets a bit scary for the little ones.

Okay, but not great.

This is an exellent DVD set.Don't listen to what the others say,they say its bad,and I don't care for the 5 minutes of commercials,they are actully intresting.They also have a cool way of doing the song inbetween episodes,which is showing thier moments.This is really good,but I actully brought a set at Best Buy which includes the Best Of Gordon aswell.The DVDs show old episdoes re-narrarated by George Carlin.In conclusion,you might as well get this DVD set.

If you already have other newer DVDs, don't buy this set. There are alot of overlapping episodes (well, hence, "the best of..."). The quality is very very bad, they should put in a little effort to remaster everything. Also, the episodes are out of chronological order. Neither of the 3 DVDs hold my son's interest for too long, and he is a MAJOR Thomas fan.

Poor set.......2006-04-11

I'm not steeped in Thomas the Tank Engine lore; my son showed some interest in the program and it looked like a pretty good series, so we decided to get him this DVD set. However, as much as I appreciate the fine model train artistry (it is awesome!) and George Carlin's narration, I just can't get into this series.

First and foremost, I think it is AWFUL that you have to watch 5 minutes of commercials before you can watch any of the Thomas DVD. The DVD prohibits skipping the loud, tedious commercials. Because of this, this DVD never gets watched (1 of 3). If you don't mind having to watch 5 minutes of commercials (or start the DVD and come back 5 minutes later to watch it), this won't bother you as much as it does us.

Also, as has been mentioned, the stories are in a completely jumbled order, so its difficult to piece together a linear narrative of how the characters develop. If you don't know much about Thomas and his friends (like me) I would not recommend this series. On its face, the series looks very appealing, but in the end, simple goofs in putting together the DVD make it aggravating to watch and difficult to fully appreciate.

Richard Pryor Fan.......2007-03-17

If you like Richard Pryor, you'll love this DVD. Pryor plays three different characters in "Which Way is Up" and every character is a riot! His interaction with the children in "Bustin' Loose will have you in stitches! The only reason this doesn't get five stars is because of "Brewster's Millions", which I did not find quite as funny as the other three movies. Three great and one decent Richard Pryor movies all on one DVD---you can't beat it for the price.

Though I could not (and still cannot) get this DVD to play in my DVD player of choice, when I did have the opportunity to set it up in another room it was pure enjoyment. Richard Pryor was born to make laughs.

Good Movies, Bare Bones Treatment.......2006-02-09

As you may know, comedian Richard Pryor passed away in December of 2005 following a massive heart attack. The award winning funnyman had also been suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. On February 7th, Universal released a four movie collection titled The Richard Pryor 4-Movie Collection. Universal re-released Bustin' Loose on DVD last year as part of their Soul Cinema collection, so I was a bit curious as to why this film was being released on DVD again.

The Richard Pryor 4 Movie Collection features the following films-Which Way Is Up, Brewster's Millions, Car Wash, and Bustin' Loose. This is a good collection of Pryor's funnier films. The bad thing about this collection is the bare bones treatment. There is no booklet, there are no new bonus features (as a matter of fact there are no bonus features at all), and there aren't even four discs. The movies are packaged on dual sided discs with two movies on each side of one disc. Each film is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1).

As for the movies, you may have seen them before on DVD. Which Way Is Up? was released on DVD in the past but has been out of print for awhile. This was one of Pryor's funniest vehicles. In this film he plays three different characters. Many critics have said that Eddie Murphy was inspired by this film because in later films Coming To America, and The Nutty Professor he juggled multiple roles. In this film Pryor stars as three different characters. Pryor stars as Leroy the orange picker, Leroy's father, and he stars as the minister who sexed up Leroy's wife while he was away working. Leroy himself also falls in love with another woman and finds himself juggling relationships.

Car Wash is a classic film with a host of guest stars. Pryor wasn't the star of Car Wash despite his name usually getting top billing in cover art. It's an ensemble film about people working at a popular car wash. Antonio Fargas (Starsky & Hutch), Bill Duke (Menace 2 Society) and George Carlin (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) co-star in the film.

Bustin' Loose ushered in a new era of Richard Pryor films. This ushered in the family friendly Richard Pryor (although there is still strong language in the film). Richard Pryor stars in this film as a man on parole with the threat of going back to jail held over his head. He doesn't have much time but he has to transport Cicely Tyson and a group of rag tag youths across the country.

Brewster's Millions is a very popular Pryor film although it's considered a dud by many. In this film Pryor has inherited a lot of money, but to get the money has to spend $30 million dollars in thirty days. There is a catch. He can't purchase anything large like a house. It's a fun film and John Candy co-stars.

The set just comes across as cheap when you look at other movie collections that Universal has released in the past year. The Alfred Hitchcock Collection, and special editions of To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sting and The Deer Hunter seem so precious, unique, and effort filled. This set just seems thrown together. If you already own these films on DVD, keep your single disc sets. This collection is so bare bones it deserves to be in the bargain basket. What else is tragic about this movie collection is once again no bonus features. This is at least the third incarnation of Car Wash on DVD. So many of the people involved in the film are still alive and working in the industry. It would be great to get some kind of commentary or bonus featurette for this film one day. Also, since Richard has passed, it would have been nice if they held up this set's release to include some kind of tribute to Richard.

The bottom line is if you already own these films keep your single discs. If you don't own these films, this is a reasonable way to purchase all of the films.

I suspect the five-star reviews of this DVD were written by spammers working for the company that sells it.

These compendium DVDs are routinely made by stupid jackasses who figure our attention span is only 10 seconds (the MTVers) so there's no point in showing an entire performance. What we get here is Carol Burnett talking about Ed Sullivan and occasionally throwing out little snippets of the acts. We get only a few seconds of the comedians and novelty acts, though they sometimes provide a whole song, other times a fraction of the song. This format is so annoying I didn't much like the DVD.

Watching Ed Sullivan on Sunday night was an American tradition. He came out with his squinchy little body and his upraised hands and told us all that it was going to be a 'really big really big sheww' . 'Let's hear it for Curtis Le May from SAC. He 's going to bomb the Commies into Smithereens' Down there in the front row say a big hello to one of the great champeens of all time. Let's hear it for Jack Dempsey'
Ed would begin that way introducing the celebrities and warming us for Toppo Gigio the Little Italian Mouse or for , a young man from Memphis , Tennessee ( Ed could hardly hide the distaste as he pronounced the words ) Elvis Presley. "
The video contains records of some of the highlight performances, and also an interview with Ed and his wife Sylvia.
Highlights are wonderful, but my sense is that putting together a package in which the complete shows as they came on at the time would give a dimension no excerpts can.

The best thing about this DVD is that the performances shown appear in their entirety - not as excerpts! So many documentary collections just give you a portion of a performance. Also, the quality of the old films, especially the ones in color, is remarkable.

I'VE BOUGHT HIM NEARLY EVERY THOMAS DVD, BUT "THE BEST OF GORDON" IS HIS FAVORITE AND WE WATCHED IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. ALL OF THE THOMAS DVD'S ARE GREAT FOR KIDS. Brings back classic stories(8 out of 10).......2004-09-29

Okay Gordon isn't one of the main characters so there weren't very much stories to put on this tape, I mean some of them aren't even about Gordon they just have Gordon in them. But then again, this tape did bring back some of my favorite stories like Gordon and the Famous Visitor and Gordon Takes a Dip therefore, I gave this one 4 stars.

GREAT SET OF EARLY SPECIALS FOR CARLIN.......2007-06-24

This is a very interesting set as it shows Carlin's early specials and how he progressed into one of the greatest comics of all time. I would suggest that you buy the other sets too. Some of these shows have a lot of the same material,so it would be wise to watch one from this set and skip to a newer one and mix them up a bit. The collected specials cover 30 years and some are a bit dated now,but his is still a top act!

If there has been one comedian who has constantly entertained, invigorated, and made me fall on the floor laughing more often than any other comedian out there, it would be George Carlin. His wit and constant perseverance to come up with new and cutting-edge material is inspiring. George has been entertaining for decades and will continue to be the funniest man alive until his last day.

I was excited by the promise of this set - hell who would not at the prospect of 4 -5 hours of Carlin?

Carlin has wonderful timing and a wicked and wacky grin that precedes anyone of his reflections on the absurdity of the human condition that he delivers with a complete mastery of American idiom.

This is a collection that is hard to ignore for a die-hard fan like me - but suffers from repetition of many of his classic pieces - like "Words they won"t let you say on TV" to "Stuff" especially since his delivery of his masterworks does not vary greatly from one performance to the other. The editors must have been sleeping.

But if you have the cash, splurge.

Ever since seeing his 90's work I've been a fan, so it was with great hopes that I unpacked this collection. After viewing the first DVD I was thinking that he has really improved since that and hoped for the next discs to be better.

This is a great package! Three Thomas the train DVDs at a special rate. While not all parents might like this the kids will love this set.

Great Set.......2006-09-30

This is an exellent DVD set.There are 2 more volumes of Totally Thomas,but I don't think they are available on Amazon.This and the other 2 volumes contain all of Seasons 5&6,and Thomas & His Friends Get Along and Thomas & His Friends Help Out.So if you want to save a bunch of money,get this(and the other 2 volumes,available on Ebay and elsware),so you can save yourself some money.

My son, almost 4, watches these over and over. He knows them all by heart. Percy's Chocolate Crunch is his favorite. They really give him story ideas for his make believe play with his trains... Buying the set saved some $$$$, always a good thing, especially when you must pay so much for the actual wooden Thomas toys - but oh so worth every penny....
