The classic girlhood fantasy of marrying a handsome prince is given a surprisingly realistic and subtle treatment in The Prince and Me. A pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin named Paige (Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mona Lisa Smile) collides with a lazy, presumptuous exchange student named Eddie (Luke Mably, 28 Days Later) and, after a prickly beginning, falls in love with him--only to discover that Eddie is Edvard, the Crown Prince of Denmark. The scenario is pure wish-fulfillment, but director Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose) not only takes a closer look at what royal life is really like, she also takes the time to turn these fantasy roles into characters that have more than two dimensions. It's still a romantic comedy aimed at teenagers, but within the genre's parameters, the movie has a strong visual style and what might be called depth. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars The Prince, The Pauper, The Fairy Tale Ending.......2007-07-25

I love Denmark and I really liked this film. It is a totally unrealistic romantic comedy but it was fun. Being a Crown Prince is really not a very good job which this film shows. You are surrounded by sycophants and can never determine who are real friends and who are not. Thus the Prince goes incognito to Wisconsin and the fun begins. Be sure and watch his Valet because he has some of the best lines in the movie. The Prince is totally helpless in most situations but not all. More importantly he is willing to learn and just be a regular guy. His driven and soon to be girl friend is also relatively realistic in her disdain for the pampered Prince. Once his cover is blown the action shifts back to Denmark and the royal family. I felt the Queen came across like most of the Danes I have met -- a little stiff at first but warm, friendly, and essentially pro-American. This is a typical fairy tale not very realistic but fun and it leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy at the end. Very predictable but then what fairy tale isn't? I only gave it 4 stars because I couldn't justify giving 5 to a piece of fluff but this is a fun movie and your wife or girl friend will definitely like it.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic Comedy, mindless entertainment.......2007-07-16

My title might be misguiding, but I personally enjoy watching romatic comedies. This movie gives you a very unlikely story of a prince and a regular girl meeting, and even though she hates him, in the end they fall in love. Not excatly reality, and doesn't require you to think. But, it has a fair tail ending leaving you feeling warm and fuzzy, which in my opinion is what romatic comedies are designed to do. It's not the best story, but it is definitely enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Not Your Ordinary Fairy Tale...but Cute Nevertheless.......2007-07-09

His Royal Highness Edvard of Denmark is next in line for the throne, but is still living like a very rich, spoiled playboy. In his latest scheme to "blow off some steam", he decides to head off to America (after seeing the word "Wisconsin" plastered across a girls boob while watching a raunchy "Girls Gone Wild-type" television commercial) in search of some "fun". The kicker is that his trip turns into something infinitely different than what he expected.

While posing as a Danish exchange student on the University of Wisconsin campus, he meets senior Paige, a hardworking farm girl who aspires to go to John Hopkins Medical School.. Their relationship starts out rocky, to say the least, with Paige thinking "Eddie" is a spoiled rich boy, and "Eddie" trying to do whatever it takes to woo Paige's heart. When the Prince runs out of money, he is forced to find a job and do menial tasks. Paige is failing her Shakespeare class, one that she desperately needs to ace if she is going to graduate, and when she finds out that Eddie is versed in Shakespeare they strike a bargain...she will teache him how to do laundry, if he will help her understand the Sonnets..thus the romance begins. I don't want to disclose anymore of the plot here; I'm sure you can figure out that hey fall in love, but the endingis quite a surprise, very unusual - totally not expected.

I want to issue a word of caution for parents - please don't mistake this for a cute teen-type Disney movie. I watched this with my very mature 11-year old and I'm sorry I didn't watch it alone first. In one of the earlier scenes Paige and her friends are shown drinking beer and doing shots (she does one shot). Hen there's the Girls Gone Wild-type television commercial that went on way too long, and the kissing...There is a LOT of serious kissing in this movie and one scene where the two main characters go at it in the library (the Prince loses his shirt, literally). My point is, according to the standards of our household, I would say this is mature movie. I was not comfortable with the intimacy displayed and the overdone portrayal of the typical "college" behavior, but this would not deter me form saying that as a whole. I really liked it. Seeing the Prince mature into a delightful young man because of his relationship with Paige was worth it, as was the fabulous acting by Julia Stiles and Luke Mably. I'd give it another star if it weren't for the "mature" parts.

5 out of 5 stars A "magic" story.......2007-06-08

I did not see the movie,my college daughter did. She describes the movie as being "a magic story between two people that come from different societies, and who discover that love has nothing to do with background, but with chemistry, connection between them" She also avows that "It's the best movie, the best cast,is so real and powerful, and sends a great message,_no one should lose his/her self or gave up at his/her dreams, not even for love, because then, no one in the relationship will be happy! The compromises are made only if there is no lost for both parties".
And I am writing this review at her request. What parents do for their children! :)

5 out of 5 stars Fantabulous!.......2007-05-18

Thumbs Up for both movies! I'm a sucker for romantic fairy tales and this two movies tops all. Luke Mably is drop dead gorgeous and he look every inch the prince that he portrays. The chemistry between Paige and Eddy is heartwarming. The sequel would have been nicer if the entire cast from the original show reprise their roles....btw,where has " Eddy" little sister disappear to in the sequel??

The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS release: "A Beautiful Musical but Sad Love Story !!, October 9, 2005 Reviewer: Ann Blyth's fan "Blyth's fan" I finally got the opportunity to purchase this movie, and it is the singing of Mario Lanza that blows me away . My favorites are "Beloved" , "Serenade" and "Summertime in Heidelberg", and "Deep in My Hear, Dear" , everytime I hear Mario sang those songs to Kathie , my heart just melts. Edmund Purdom does make a very handsome prince and very good lip synching too. Must of been a very tough job for him. Ann Blyth was perfect in her role as the barmaid, and what a lovely soprano voice she has!! Edmund and Ann make a great couple and they had very good chemistry working together, no wonder they did a movie together again the following year "The King's Thief" . A must watch for musical lover's fan. 5 stars for singing and acting !!!!" Cast:Ann Blyth .... Kathie; Edmund Purdom .... Prince Karl; John Ericson .... Count Von Asterburg; Louis Calhern .... King of Karlsberg; Edmund Gwenn .... Prof. Juttner; S.Z. Sakall .... Joseph Ruder (as S. Z. "Cuddles" Sakall); Betta St. John .... Princess Johanna; John Williams .... Lutz; Evelyn Varden .... This was a wonderful DVD. At last I was able to acquire it. This reflects the great singing talent of Mario Lanza.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie in My 71 Year Life!.......2007-02-16

Thank God it is at last available on DVD! Of all the films ever made, none can surpass the wonderful romantic emotions 'The Student Prince' engenders in my heart. My eyes were filled with tears when I left the movie theater after seeing it the first time. I am very happy that I can relive the wonderful experience again. Mario is greater than Caruso to me.

5 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Blend of Melody, Voice and Romance.......2007-01-24

Music, real music - Singing that inspires, especially the voice of Mario Lanza. A love story - the soul of which crosses all generations. Innocence, the return of which is needed. Throw out the porn, piercings, tattoos, and the rest. There is a time when first loves set the stage for the rest. Reset the future. If your still emotionally alive, expect misty eyes. Yes, romance dies, but so do we.

Not a Warner official release, but from a Brazil company Classicline. It is in widescreen tho not anamorphic, and the audio is (at least) two channel stereo. As this is unlikely to be released by Warner, this is well worth the higher cost given the film's magical appeal. Forget the poor critical reviews and let yourself go with it. Film was a smash hit in the early days of Cinemascope in Australia on a level with its MGM running mate Seven Brides.

A weak, lazy comedy about an easygoing teacher (Mark Harmon, whose movie career never had the kind of trajectory that his TV work did) who is forced to teach--you guessed it--summer school. What's worse, he gets exactly the kind of kids you'd expect: the losers and slackers who are forced to make up the work they didn't complete during the year. He tries to duck work and let them fend for themselves. But in this mushy Carl Reiner film, the teacher offers some life lessons to his band of delinquents and--surprise, surprise--the kids impart a lesson or two to their teacher, as well. Harmon coasts through the film on his good looks, which are considerable. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Still an enjoyable movie 20 years later.......2007-06-05

I never equated Summer School with anything remotely raunchy, so I was surprised to see that term brought up in the top review here in regard to this movie.

I loved watching this when it was first on cable nearly twenty years ago and I look forward to watching this again real soon. I enjoyed Mark Harmon's and Kirstie Alley's performances, and seeing the star review reminded me of Courtney Thorne-Smith's performance back when she was an unknown (I always love looking at, or thinking about, movies from the 80s and 90s and having those wide-eyed moments when you recognize someone who's very well-known today, yet you glanced over them back in the day). Dean Cameron's role as one of the main class clowns was memorable.

Even though the plot was funny and carefree, one can't help but think it's possible that kids who can't read, or who are dyslexic, or have seemingly insurmountable personal problems can't succeed if just one person or teacher took the time to show them they cared (minus the bribing - or did that help in the end?).

This is an enjoyable film that hasn't lost its touch after 20 years (wow, how time flies!). It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it, and, perhaps, a few memories for those of us who went to summer school to chuckle at. - Donna Di Giacomo

4 out of 5 stars Its hard to teach summer school.......2007-05-30

The kids minds on other things and people, like learining to drive, gving birth, learning to read again and so on!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome classic..........2007-05-12

Great classic, with some awesome stars in it. Truly a defining movie of the 80's period.

4 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper.......2007-02-22

Although my wife doesn't like this movie (for reasons she can't seem to articulate), I have seen this movie several times, and I laugh through it every time. Maybe I'm just ready to laugh at anything or maybe I'm just a Mark Harmon fan, because I haven't seen any of his movies that I don't enjoy. I recommend this one with the caveat that its humor may be too slapstick for some.

5 out of 5 stars "Happy that the world is upside down".......2007-02-14

"Summer School" surprised a lot of critics by bringing something new to a genre most people had already had enough of by the time of its release (1987). With a spunky screenplay and Carl Reiner's gift for comedic timing, the film fills in a gap neglected by the majority of the decade's other high school pics, whose styles were polarized between the rebellious, goofy sexcapades found in John Hughes' brat pack series, and more "mature," galvanizing films like "Stand and Deliver."

"Summer School" begins with Danny Elfman's song "Happy" playing as the clock counts down and students prepare for summer. Reiner himself portrays usual summer teacher, Mr. Dearadorian, who happens to win fifty thousand dollars in a scratch off lottery just as the last bell rings. His boss, Vice Principal Phil Gills (Robin Thomas) tries to tell him there is no Island, but he quits anyway.

Gills approaches Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon), a gym teacher who is ready to spend the summer in Hawaii with his girlfriend -- "We got leis on and everything." Gills threatens his tenure, so he decides to stay. Shoop tries to get his girlfriend to stay by quoting "There's no place like home." She says she understands and will just go without him.

Mr. Shoop's class is made up of group of slackers and misfits who for a variety of reasons failed the English skills test required to graduate.

There are: Dave and Chainsaw, an inseparable pair, one is obsessed with Chainsaw, the other with the film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"; There's Alan, the black-sheep of a genius family; Anna Maria, a buxom foreign exchange student brushing up on her English skills; Pam House, a spaced-out surfer girl with a thing for Mr. Shoop (I think it's funny the DVD's "Set-up" menu features a picture of her); Kevin, a football player kicked off the team for "being stupid"; Jerome, who spends most of the film in the bathroom; Rhonda, who is pregnant with either Sean Penn or David Lee Roth's child, Denise, a bad driver who suffers from dyslexia, and Larry who sleeps all the time because of his night job.

At first Shoop doesn't take his job seriously and takes the class on field trips to the beach, go-kart races, and theme parks. Then Dave and Chainsaw almost get arrested for drinking on the beach. Mr. Shoop says the booze was his, and gets arrested. Gills tries to fire him, but Dave and Chainsaw put on a Grand Guignol classroom show that scares away the replacement teacher, and the students demand Shoop returns. I'm probably revealing too much plot info here, but I mainly just wanted to note the blood and guts classroom scene doesn't seem as funny now in wake of all the school shootings. Though I know if I hadn't have made splatter films in high school I probably would've blown up the school, so maybe the film will help some people.

Anyway, Shoop seeks the aid of Robin Bishop (Kirstie Alley), who is teaching honor students who are spending their summer voluntarily in a classroom nearby. He likes her. She eventually likes him, even though she's seeing Gills.

Everything turns out okay in the end as you'd expect from this type of film; what's different is that there aren't any real bad guys, just a lot of miscommunication. Gills is presented in the worst light, but even he is spared the humiliation that similar characters in this genre of films usually receive (Ferris Bueller's Ed Rooney for example.) Here, Gills just loses the girl because he's intolerant and inflexible. Shoop and his students learn how to adapt.

Before "Summer School," I always resented Harmon for ruining the TV show "Moonlighting," but now I realize it's probably due more to the show's creators having a brain freeze after David and Maddie said two dirty words and finally slept together. "Summer School" was Harmon's first role after his "Moonlighting" appearances, and it's probably his most memorable and endearing (unless you like Ted Bundy).

There are a few dated references -- for instance, Dave and Chainsaw sing Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" and Rhonda mentions Sean Penn's marriage to Madonna -- but the film should still entertain audiences young and old - it even includes an homage to "From Here to the Eternity," with Shoop and Robin kissing on the beach, joined by Shoop's dog, Wondermutt, and his favorite toy, a stuffed doll's head named Bob.

Description

Robson Green (Reckless, Touching Evil) stars as Barry, a working-class cop assigned to protect the queen's youngest son (Rupert Penry-Jones, Charlotte Gray, The Four Feathers), a new student at Cambridge. Tara Fitzgerald (Brassed Off!, Frenchman's Creek) is Grace, an American exchange student both men fall for. When the prince proves as inept at love as he is at learning, the macho bodyguard becomes tutor as well as protector, ghostwriting sweet nothings and academic assignments, all the while repressing his own feelings for Grace. As seen on BBC America and PBS's Masterpiece Theatre as The Prince of Hearts. "It's a delight. . .very funny and touching" —Daily Mail (U.K.).

5 out of 5 stars The Student Prince.......2007-01-10

Another delightful Robson Green film. Great supporting cast. As an American I feel pity for the monarchy but don't misinterpret this. This is a great romp. We had tried to find this but we never could because we knew it as "The King's Bodyguard" but at last we have it and enjoy it each time we need a good laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Student Prince review.......2006-02-26

I got the dvd in a very reasonable time and have watched it several times since. It is a simple story, but it has a feel good ending.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly produced and thoroughly entertaining British drama production.......2005-10-12

Robson Green stars as Barry, a working-class cop assigned to protect the queen's youngest son who is a new student at Cambridge in The Student Prince, a superbly produced and thoroughly entertaining British drama production. The fun begins when cop bodyguard and the prince encounter Grace, an American exchange student for whom they both fall -- hard. When the prince proves as inept at love as he is at learning, the bodyguard finds himself become tutor as well as protector, ghostwriting sweet nothings and academic assignments, all the while repressing his own feelings for Grace. A BBC American and PBS "Masterpiece Theatre" production that would make a splendid and very popular addition to any community library Video/DVD collection, The Student Prince is widescreen, full color, 92-minutes, and enhanced with this DVD format to include a Robson Green biography, a photo gallery, and cast filmographies.

4 out of 5 stars Quite satisfied.......2005-10-05

I received the DVD rather quickly (I live in France) and it was in a very good state. Good transaction !

4 out of 5 stars All over the place.......2005-07-24

For the most part, I enjoyed this production. Robson Green (Barry the police officer) and Rupert Penry-Jones (the prince) play their parts well even though the story is all over the place - borrowing a great deal from Cyrano as well as Educating Rita. My only complaint is with the female lead. I admire Tara Fitzgerald's work very much, but in this role as an American exchange student, she is not very believeable. Some of the reason why is the script (which is a little too corny for words at times), but her accent is all over the place. She is trying hard to sound like the bohemian American she plays (it doesn't play very convincingly), but then constantly slips between an American accent and an English accent, sometimes in the same sentence. The ending is a little silly, but overall, if you are not expecting a life changing experience, The Student Prince is an entertaining way to spend 92 minutes.

Product Description

Brand new, factory sealed, fully licensed DVD manufactured in Brazil. NTSC format. Playable on any North American DVD player. High quality full screen color image. Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles do not appear unless turned on and they can be easily turned off. The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition: "A biography of Sigmund Romberg, the musical and operetta composer. Anything which features his music must have some good features, but this is superlative all the way around. Jose Ferrer is charming as Rommie, Merle Oberon gives a nice performance as his love interest, and the list of cameos is starry, with Rosemary Clooney shining in one number and the great operatice soprano Helen Traubel singing "Softly" as it must be, a touching plea full of torment, angst, and ultimately acceptance. Beautiful technicolor, good direction. Very amusing, filled with some of the best songs ever written, and beautifully performed and captured on film."

While the movie was good with wonderful music, the colors tended to bleed, especially the reds. I question the "high Quality Import Edition." Too bad whoever transfers these old movies to DVD can't do a better job sometimes.

    Product Description

Brand new, factory sealed, fully licensed DVD manufactured in Brazil. NTSC format. Playable on any North American DVD player. High quality full screen black and white image. Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles can be easily turned off. The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition: "How I love this movie! It's just great. The first in a long line of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy collaberations, it's easily one of the best, and my personal fave. The music is beautiful, the sets and costumes are lush, and the plot is silly fun. MacDonald is a runaway French princess who is traveling incognito with a shipload of brides bound for N'Orleans. Eddy is the Mercenary Captain who saves her from a band of cutthroat pirates. Songs include "Neath the Southern Moon", "I'm Falling in Love with Someone", "O Sweet Mystery of Life", and "Zing Zing Zing" among others. There are several great scenes; Eddy marching though the bayous singing "Tramp Tramp Tramp", MacDonald passing off a random drunk as her "uncle" and of course a great sequence where Jeanette unveils her heretofore hidden talent for singing to Eddy. The sweet, lightheatered spirit of this movie makes it a great introduction to the Eddy/MacDonald cannon for newcomers. If you like this film be sure to also check out "Rosemarie" (generally considered to be their best film) and "New Moon" (containing my favorite movie line of all time: "Do I LOOK like the kind of girl who would marry a moonstruck beachcomber under a coconut tree!?"). "Naughty Marietta" is a happy little movie that is essential for old-movie buffs or anyone who likes a good romance. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars What a joy!.......2007-01-22

Thank you so much to Brazil for making these wonderful movies of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy available. I was hesitant to purchase, but am so pleased that I did. The DVD's are playable in South Africa. What a joy to hear those wonderful voices - the soundtracks are good - the pictures are clear. Great viewing for us oldies!

5 out of 5 stars Probably about the best we can hope for in a DVD treatment..........2006-12-13

I'll not review the movie, since that is done elsewhere. The movie is a classic among classics, and by far the best of the EddyMac pairing.

I was a little hesitant to order the DVD considering it's an "Import Edition" and given the relative high price.

First impression - I was so eager to view this that I popped it right into my laptop when I received it. On the laptop DVD player, there were some strange picture artifacts along the bottom of the screen and the sound was half a beat behind the video (even with nothing else running in the background). Uh oh...

Convinced that I'd been ripped off, I put it in my home theater dvd player (Pioneer Elite DV-47ai) expecting more of the same... SURPRISE! No issues at all! Picture is VERY clear (considering the age) and the sound was bright! 1000 times better than my VHS version!! I suspect this is the best treatment of this movie EddyMac fans will ever have, which is sad. But of this version, I have no real complaints. I'd pay twice the price for it! Thanks Brazil!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Singing in a Nice Story.......2006-10-01

"Naughty Marietta", is a wholesome film, unlike the name may imply. Her naughtiness is running away from an arranged marriage to a villain.

Not a formal stage production, but a story, set in France and the American colonies in the 1700's. Pirates. Pioneers. Romance. Nelson tries so hard to woo Jeanette, a theme in their films.

Great songs and duets. Nelson and Jeanette have a chemistry together. Nelson Eddy, and Jeanette MacDonald are great singers. The sets and costumes take you there. The characters are appealing. The story is interesting, with charm. Some humor. The songs fit smoothly as part of the story. Singing a song, while hiking through the woods, fits the story. Jeanette wears a stunning dress, early in the film, that they don't make anymore, even in the movies; too bad for you fashion people, they didn't have color film. Good acting by Frank Morgan who played the wizard, in the "Wizard of Oz"; and Elsa Lanchester, who played the nanny who quits in "Mary Poppins"; in their much earlier years.

Other excellent, Jeanette MacDonald / Nelson Eddy musicals are, their best, "Maytime", and "Girl of the Golden West", which has Buddy Ebsen, (Jed Clampett) in his 20's; "Rose Marie", in the Canadian Rockies, is pleasant too, but not as exceptional. These movies are hidden gems for those who love a classic movie of romance, story, charm, characters, and exceptional singing.

I recorded it when it came on television. Well I like the insight into JFK Jr.'s personality or their version of it. However, their were scenes where they had these to bimbos and other jerks on the street commenting on his and his wife's life as if they knew him they could have kept that part out.

Stivers "avocet19" (Washington, DC) - I saw this movie on TCM and absolutely fell in love with it. I have seen most of Jeannette MacDonald's films, and this is by far the best performance - singing, acting, and even dancing - she has ever given. Alan Jones is a refreshing change from Nelson Eddy, and much more talented. The plot is full of love and intrigue (NOT slow as Maltin claims), with MacDonald as a Spanish spy during the Napoleonic wars, and Jones as the aristocratic playboy who falls for her without knowing who she really is. Songs include not only the classic "Donkey Serenade," but also "Gianina Mia," a passionate and beautiful love song. This film is an absolute must-see for any fan of musical operetta."

Allan Jones -- a bit of a hammy over-emoter -- was a great tenor who never got the credit he deserved. Jeannette Mac is THE PERFECT INGENUE and not only a great coloratura soprano, but an excellent actress.

Yes, it's a fetching operetta, not "War and Peace." Want dismal, find a Russian play
