Australian filmmaker John Duigan (The Year My Voice Broke, Wide Sargasso Sea) has a taste for sensual art direction that occasionally flares up in a big, big way. With Sirens, he manages to turn oceans of female nudity into a slightly tongue-in-cheek decorousness that is neither unpersuasively arty nor purely soft porn. Starring Hugh Grant (and released the same year as two other Grant vehicles, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bitter Moon, thus establishing him as a star), the film finds the handsome, stammering actor playing an Anglican priest newly posted to Australia. There, the clergyman's first mission is to convince a famously libertarian artist (Sam Neill) not to exhibit a painting with mixed erotic and religious themes. The experience of being at their host's anything-goes compound for a few days, however, nestled deep in the wilds and keeping company with uninhibited, frequently naked models proves terribly stirring for Grant and his character's timid wife (Tara Fitzgerald), the two of them a study in sexual repression. The film doesn't have a point so much as it does an appealing atmosphere of unbridled naturalism counterpointed by Grant's charming self-consciousness. Hugh Grant stars in this movie about a young reverend and his wife sent to Australia to minister to the flock. The minister's wife has to deal with sexual urges while trying to remain loyal to her husband. The movie is about freeing your inner goddess.

Queen of the Harpies! .......2006-08-18

A minister (Hugh Grant) and his wife (Tara Fitzgerald) are sent to talk some good, Christian sense into pagan Norman Lindsay (Sam Neill), an artist whose work is a little too sexually graphic for the townsfolk. You can probably guess what transpires when this couple, which unwisely attempts to suppress their natural urges, meets the artist and his liberated group. The film is funny (deliberately, I might add) because we recognize the importance of indulging our desires, at least occasionally and in a sensible manner. Repression sounds like a good idea to some people from a religious or moral perspective, yet it can lead to undesirable behaviors. If there is one primary point to the film, I believe that is it. Pervasively sensual, this is a beautiful film for adults, with plenty to interest both men and women.

This is one of my favorite movies. It's so seductive and funny and beautiful all at the same time. Now, this is a chick flick. I don't know if most men would agree with me. If you like artsy films, you will probably enjoy this movie.

Cheesy Movie Folks!!.......2006-04-16

I can't believe how many people think this movie is sooooo wonderful! The only thing good about this movie is the beautiful scenary, the costumes, and the acting done by the young girls who play Sam Neill's (character name Norman Lindsay) young daughters!!

"Sirens" tries to cover to many topics and just touches upon each topic lightly, but never quite addresses each topic to its fullest potential. It's like sticking your big toe in a swimming pool without jumping in and taking the full plunge.

Hugh Grant plays a minister who is sent to request a very progressive artist (played by Sam Neill) to withdraw a contoversial painting from his art show. Grant's & Neill's characters do some half-baked/superficial bantering about religion, nudity, sexuality, but nothing worthwhile. I am not even sure if we ever learn if the so called "controversial" painting was withdrawn or not.

The nudity, sensual, erotic scenes, were nothing to write home about.... take the hedonism for whichever way you want.

Tara Fitzgerald, who plays Hugh Grant's wife in the movie, becomes corrupted by the three sirens of the movie and has an affair on her minister husband with the laborer who works for Sam Neill's character. She then feels guilty for having slept with the laborer because one of the sirens likes the laborer not because she cheated on her husband. This seems like odd behavior for a woman of God in the 1930s.

Long story short, "Sirens" is not worth owning or viewing.

Evil Becomes Her.......2006-04-06

I didnt know this movie was about Norman Lindsay the Australian artist and brother of author Jack Lindsay. I used to collect Norman Lindsay -- still have some of his printed pictures. This is a lovely film with two of my favorite stars. The nudity is attractive especially as there is no sex to speak of. It is a confrontation between good and evil -- or perhaps a questioning of the meaning of "good" and "evil". Look for the snake who precedes Taras goings about -- especially as it glides toward the ship of her and hubby Hughs voyage home.

If you concentrate on the sexual tension in this movie, you'll miss the wonderful symbolism (snake in the garden, blind man, angels, etc.). This is a whimsical story of temptation, love, acceptance and many more of life's twisted paths. Very seductive and entertaining. An added bonus was the fact that Elle had to gain a little weight so she had a stomach, for the artist portrayed in the movie painted 'natural' female nudes, rather than the twiggy thin models that most women never aspire to without starvation. Loved it!

Kadeem Hardison, Bill Nunn, Samuel L. Jackson, and James Bond III (writer, director) all appeared in Spike Lee's School Daze. Even the plot is formulaic, there are some funny moments and the proverbial battle between good and evil sets up a possible sequel. The female vampire meticulously picks off her victims, seducing them and revealing their secrets (one scene has her screwing this gay dude who comes off straight). The soundtrack is haunting. Not a lot of theater play when this film was 1st released back in '90, but it stands up and is a perfect companion to Tales from the Hood...

Modern Day Cult Film.......2006-11-12

No this movie isn't for everyone, but over the years it has become my favorite movie. Like any cult film this movie is filled with one-liners that viewers will embed in their memories. If you are looking for the ideal film for fun to share with your friends ... this is it. Watch it once and make your judgement, either you will hate it and never want to see it again, or you'll be a true die fan like me and watch it over and over again, until you can speak each line word for word with the actors as I and my friends do.

When you look at the title of this film, what do you think the word Def means? At first, I thought that it may have something to do with the hearing of the main character. Perhaps he would fight this evil while having a physical defect. If you thought the same as I, well ... I hate to tell you this ... but you are wrong. I believe that this is actually a misspelling of the word "death". Now, I cannot be certain, but if you watch this film than look at the title it only makes sense. Imagine if this film were called Death by Temptation, wouldn't you know more about what this film was about than if it were called Def By Temptation? I believe that by shortening the title, the filmmaker lost some of their audience. A word of advise to those looking to title films out there ... always complete the entire title no matter the length, you will yield better results.

Now, let's get into the "nitty gritty" of this film. The acting was amateur, the cinematography was preschool standards, and the overall plot of this film reached further than I could when I was in high school. Kadeem and Samuel L. Jackson headline this film, but it is really a film about Joel. Why isn't his face on the cover of this film? This may have helped as well because then viewers would not have been so anxious to see just Jackson or Hardison, they would have wanted to see what this film was truly about. This was nothing more than Troma capitalizing on two more famous people than the main character played by James Bond III. Not even Jackson could perform well in this film. His portrayal of a father/minister seemed too over-the-top and controlling. I needed more substance, and I think this is what was generally missing from this film. Substance. By the second succubus killing, I didn't care anymore. I felt that they had spent too much time on her, because she was the "beauty" part of this film, and therefore rushing the remaining portion of the movie.

If you were to ask me the question about "K" and Joel being friends, I would not have believed it. The characters were so poorly written and acted that you could tell that they were just going through the motions. Then, as if brought out of thin air, "K" befriends Dougy (the undercover Federal Agent) to fight this evil creature. AND ... where did Grandma come from? These actions were taking place over the course of one night, how could she suddenly get from North Carolina to New York without being winded? If I were "K" or even Joel, I would question the Grandmother more than the succubus. If you watch some of the comments before the film, there is an interview with a gentleman from Troma that talks about how the camera guy left at the end of the film to "bigger and better things", and you shouldn't be able to tell the difference in one camera style from the other. Well, this was yet again another wrong statement. The end of this film was nothing like the beginning, and the change of camera style was very evident. Needless-to-say, I was impressed with one aspect of this film. There was one scene when "K" was chewed into the television, and I thought that was a very well produced shot. Why couldn't the rest of the film be more like this?

Overall, I wasn't impressed with this one. It did make me interested in seeing more Troma films, but definatly stay clear of the one entitled Def By Temptation.

First off, Make no mistake this is a troma movie (need I say more)! This movie is so terrible some of the scenes in the film made tears come to my eyes from laughing so hard! The only reason I give this film 4 stars instead of 1 is because of how horribly funny the movie is.

I like this film and found it fresh and entertaining. Reminds me of the Transporter and thats not a bad thing.
The mother in this movie is one evil hag, makes Cruella De Vil of 101 Dalmatians look like the SpongeBob.
The whole darn cast is great and the action is non stop.
You should check out this thriller.

I wont prattle on too much, but being a fan of european movies, this english language euro-flick I found captivating, beautifully shot, naturally lit, nice crops and evocative, which will find favor with any photographically orientated people out there. Kind of a Luc Besson "Leon" (The Professional) feel but always a little off centre and keeps you wondering - Don't be fooled into thinking this is an Asia Argento vehicle because she is so prominant on the cover, while I am happy to see Asia wherever possible, she is one of several cogs in this movie which makes it all the better. I would really have to be a cynic to find fault with this movie.

i have watched well over my fair share of garbage movies... luckily, this aint one'a em.

then again, 'red siren' will NEVER win any awards either!

maybe my reason for lovin this lil movie so much has somethin to do with psychology. 'cause i had rented it first, but the dvd had glitches at what i thought to be two key parts of the flick and i had to skip those chapters, missin out on what was bein said or done. dammit.
so, whats the first thang i do??? i get online and find out that amazon has it for under ten bucks... shoot, i owe the movie rental place TWICE that much in late fees!

so i went on and bought the damn thang, naturally.

but i enjoy this movie primarily for the same exack reasons that the others didnt: it asks the viewer to be acceptive of the discrepencies and just sit back and watch already. i watch real good; i should be paid to do it, but that's another story.

um, but yeah, i like it. doesnt come off pretentious in any way. it jus does what it does without begging for forgiveness.
(catering to the needs of others is somethin else i do real good. i hate that about me sometimes, but such is life, right?)

'the professional' WISHES it was this movie! that was a good flick until the hitman turnt into 'old uncle molester'... that disturbed me.

but if you liked movies such as 'the replacement killers' or 'long kiss goodnight' or, um, any of the new star wars trilogies then you'll love this one too.

An average Euro-thriller that is a rental.......2004-08-08

This is a good rental if you like an action thriller, but to buy the DVD would be a wasteful investment. As I watched the movie, I felt it was a hybrid between the "Bourne Identity and "The Transporter" with a couple of others thrown in. Obviously, the film borrowed way too many ideas from other movies to make it an interesting plot. Another problem to the movie was there wasn't a focus main character to develop nor was there an enthralling villain. So, who was the main character, Asia (hot tuff chick from Vin Diesel's XXX) or the little hostage girl and her assassin companionate?

Asia paid second fiddle to Triple X and she did again this time. Asia's character is a typical tuff police officer that does not like to follow normal procedures. They started to develop her character in the beginning, but as the movie developed, she had only one major action sequence and appeared in many minor scrimmages, which did her no justice. Her potential could have been much higher. For the other half of the movie, we were stringed along watching an Assassin helps a little girl, like in "The Professional" (mentioned by another reviewer.) The worst part is the main Villain who was not even believable, what was her crime again? (She supposedly killed a maid, but nobody knows for sure, because the director really did not care to develop the reasoning, except she was a bad woman). For a while I though the Assassin in this movie was the same mono-tune, harden exterior, but soft-hearted Assassin that played in "The Transporter".

Both the "Bourne Identity" and "Red Siren" are Euro-thriller, which intrigue me living in the US. Europe has a beautiful setting and to have a rampage shooting spree contradictory to such a homogeneous peaceful society is great. The scenes didn't really engaged much into the movie nor enhanced it. Spain as far as I could remembered could have been S. California in this movie. Not too much detail in the scene except for the warehouse.

With above average acting and a fast storyline make this an enjoyable to watch; even if the plot was not too convincing and dry. It's a rental.

Asia Rulz!.......2004-07-16

Mark my words on this Lions Gate Films is going down in history as the only major studio with balls.
Granted they have had their flops but in the past 10 years they have picked up movies noone would touch!!
Go look them up make a list seek out some of their titles chances are you wont be disappointed!!
Hell start with Red Siren a drama/action vehicle starring Asia Argento as a detective who winds up with a kid handing her a dvd of her nanny being brutally tortured with a chainsaw!!!
Oh yeah the kid claims it is her mother and oh god save me from this crazy women!!!
Her mother by the way is evil incarnate times infinity you never really see her do anything physical(sort of)but her power is felt everytime she pops up on screen.
Red Siren has some of the best cinematography ive ever seen as well as people you actually feel for and root for.
The gentleman who plays the little girls eventual guardian angel later on in this film is superb he carries the part like a pro!!!!!
Nothing is too complex in this movie nor does it ever need to be it runs smooth warts and all.
The only fault is that it borrows from Leon errr The Proffesional but it does so in its own way Red Sirens story is just as engaging as The Proffesional yet really different in tone and style and worth a look by anyone craving something good to watch!!!!

Sultry and sensual Josephine Baker.......2007-06-06

THE JOSEPHINE BAKER COLLECTION from Kino Video contains the silent film, SIREN OF THE TROPICS (1927, French), with orchestra score; and two legendary sound films, ZOU ZOU (1934, French) and PRINCESS TAM TAM (1935, French). Baker was an exuberant and uninhibited cabaret singer and dancer at Paris' Folies Bergere who sometimes only wore bananas and feathers on stage. These three film classics are a lot of fun.

SIREN OF THE TROPICS has a prospector sending his employee from France to the Caribbean, where the employee falls in love with Papitou (Baker), a free-spirited jungle animal. The duo find themselves back in Paris, where Papitou is the star of the Folies Bergere. She slowly becomes aware that her lover is betrothed to another woman. With exotic color tints, SIREN is sensual and entertaining. It ends with Baker doing the Charleston. This was her film debut. She was already a Folies star.

ZOU ZOU teams Baker with Jean Gabin and marked Baker's talking film debut. It is kind of like 42ND STREET, with Josephine the exuberant ingenue taking the place of an arrogant and undependable lead dancer in a Paris revue. The classic climax has Baker dressed in feathers and singing the unforgettable "Haiti" while on a swing inside a giant bird cage! In none of these three films does Josephine end up with the male lead, instead finding show business success.

PRINCESS TAM TAM is set in North Africa, where an author with writer's block uses Alwina (Josephine Baker) as inspiration for a PYGMALION-like novel. But his wife thinks he really loves Alwina and sets out to make him jealous and Alwina look stupid. The dazzling musical numbers here include "Dream Ship", "'Neath the Tropical Blue Skies," and a champagne-laced nightclub climax dressed in just a negligee. Again, I think Alwina ends up a Folies star in Paris and the author goes back to his wife.

All three of these movies have a Josephine Baker 20 minute conversation--"The Performer," "The Woman," and "The Films." Commenting are beautiful actress Lynn Whitfield (THE JOSEPHINE BAKER STORY), drama critics Elizabeth Kendall and Margo Jefferson, and Baker's adopted chef son. The two sound films have isolated song selections, while SIREN has several fun bonuses. THE JOSEPHINE BAKER COLLECTION has beautiful prints and offers an enjoyable three nights of entertainment.

For $5.49 you get the following three movies:

1. MARILYN MONROE in HOMETOWN STORY: released in 1951. This is Marilyn before Niagra and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Marilyn plays a very small role as a secretary to a newspaper editor. Her performance is too small to be noteable. She looks gorgeous and her speaking tone is more business like. It is not one of her "slap and tickle" roles. The film is good and very interesting by it's own rights. The actual visual picture quality for HOME TOWN STORY is the best of the 3 picture son the disc, as is the audio quality.

Starring in the film are Jeffrey Lynn, Donald Crisp, Marjorie Reynolds, Alan Hale Jr. (of Gilligan's Island), directed by Arthur Pierson. The story is about a Senator who is returning home to run a newspaper as editor after being defeated for re-election and how he plans to go on a crusade to change the world using the newspaper to do this to get all the things done from his small hometown paper that he was unable to accomplish on Capitol Hill. It's a good story, but if you watch it just for glimpses of Mariyln Monroe you will be disappointed. The picture itself has it's own redeeming qualities. It's great that it is now billed as a Marilyn picture as more people will see it who otherwise would not have come across it.

This film is a good addition (not a must-have) for the serious Marilyn Monroe Collector, but for someone just getting introduced to her films or a casual viewer of her films; there is not enough of her or to her performance to buy this film because of *her*. However, the film is very entertaining (by 1940 standards) to buy the dvd pack with/out Marilyn especially with the other two movies bundled.

2. JANE RUSSELL in THE OUTLAW: released independently by Howard Hughes in San Francisco in 1943 after United Artists refused to relsase the picture, censors having been so agitated by it! The picture upset the public and was almost immediately shut down by civic groups. IN 1946, Hughes re-released the picture (again spending thousands himself to do so) audiences came in droves to the theatre!! It is my opinion that this is a must-see for Jane Russell fans. Jane Russell doesn't play her typical hardened bad girl femme-fatale in this picture and it's very interesting, and somewhat refreshing, to see her like this.

The real stars of this film are a very gorgeous Jack Buetel as a young Billy the Kid and Walter Huston as Doc Holliday with Thomas Mitchell (easily recognized as Gerald O'Hara from Gone With The Wind) as Pat Garrett. This is a delightful comedy and a very fun picture - the best picture among the 3 on the dvd bundle. The image quality is very blurred for the first 20 minutes of the picture. This is not a hardcore - hard-boiled Western - this is a fun comedy.

The story synopsis from the back cover (listed on IMDB & in some places on Amazon but not all, which will hopefully be updated soon) is *not even close* to the real story: this, very simply put, is how it actually goes: Doc Holliday and Lawman Pat Garrett and very old close friends (before Pat was a sheriff). Doc's horse was stolen and he comes to town looking for his horse and comes upon Billy the Kid who claims to have bought the horse. Doc believes Billy and quickly they become friends & partners. This creates a riff between long-time friends Doc and Pat who go their seperate ways as Pat, being sheriff has an obligation to bring Billy in and plain just doesn't like Billy the Kid. I will leave the rest to you movie watchers so there won't be any spoilers. :)

3. AVA GARDNER in WHISTLE STOP: released in 1946.. Ava stars with George Raft in this highly watered down version of The novel written by Maritta M. Wolff that had caused a bit of a sensation for it's provacative sexual content. The screenwriter (Yordan) maintained the opening setup of the nivel, the return of the beautiful woman Mary (played by Ava Gardner) from the big city to her small hometown and the uncertain rekindling of an old love affair, and the script made surprisingly explicit that Mary Mary had been living as a kept woman (and prostitute) while in Chicago... The script and movie cut out the book's old love affair which Mary returns home to: an incestutuous one between two siblings, and the ne'er-do-well young brother is turned into a n'er-do-well ex-boyfriend who inexplainably lives with his mother in Mary's house. With George Raft looking old enough to be Mary's father! The movie is interesting when you know this background information and see how the movie was shaped and ghanged to handle the censors, but on it's own it is pretty bland, with the exception for luminous Ava Gardner pre-her stardom in The Killers. The picture quality is very dark and grainy as with a lot of the film noir B movies of this time period, but it is decent enough to be watchable.. and for Ava Gardner's performance: you certainly DO want to watch it: no matter how weak the story has been watered down to.

For $5.49 this dvd is an absolute knockout deal with 3 good stories (THE OUTLAW BEING REASON ENOUGH TO PURCHASE IT ALONE) & decent picture and sound quality for films released in the 40's.

The best movie out of the three is THE OUTLAW. It definetly lives up to it's legendary status! The other movies are so-so.

In addition to directing, dancing, and composing some of the music, it seems she has spread herself too thin. Pablo Veron is appealing as a dancer and choreographer, but even his performance is underdeveloped. While not delivering the passionate fire the tango conjures up in the imagination, what unfolds instead is a thoughtful romance filled with restrained desire. While dismissed by many as being self-indulgent, The Tango Lesson nevertheless proves Potter's bravery and experimentation as a filmmaker to address such a personal subject. If you like tango and a good story, this is it! Graat cast and wonderful dancing a la "The Red Shoes." Although you might cnsider this a "dance" movie it's surprisingly deep and very "foreign" in that it has the texture only an international film can have. If it were only available in U.S. format I'd buy it at almost any price!
