Based on the novel by Anonymous (a.k.a. political reporter Joe Klein) and released when the Monica Lewinsky scandal was in full swing, Primary Colors may have been a case of too much, too soon for many moviegoers, who preferred the real-life Clinton crisis over the movie's thinly disguised "Clintonesque" comedy. The general public felt that the film was exploiting the president's indiscretions, and as a result one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 1998 was a box-office disappointment. But when considered apart from the Clinton scandals and judged on its own considerable merits, this superb comedy-drama provides an illuminating, insightful, and frequently hilarious look at the harsh realities of presidential politics. John Travolta stars as Jack Stanton, a presidential hopeful whose campaign is challenged by dual dilemmas: how to squelch a scandal involving the candidate's alleged sex with an underage girl, and how to handle information that could potentially ruin Stanton's opponent (superbly played by Larry Hagman). Stanton's wife (Emma Thompson) stands by her man despite awareness of his infidelities, but his loyal campaign planners (played by Billy Bob Thornton, Maura Tierney, and promising newcomer Adrian Lester) experience a crisis of conscience. So does one of the Stantons' oldest friends (Kathy Bates, in an Oscar-nominated role), whose sense of betrayal and lost idealism proves too much to bear. Masterfully adapted by director Mike Nichols and his former-comedy-partner-turned-screenwriter, Elaine May, Primary Colors plays like a sophisticated comedy with loads of memorable scenes and dialogue, but it sneaks up on you with devastating dramatic impact. Anchored by Travolta's superb performance (which is reminiscent of Clinton without being a cheap impersonation), the movie presents a story of great moral complexity and leaves viewers to contemplate their own reactions to the volatile and ethically complicated game of modern politics. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars deja vu again?.......2007-04-08

It does seem like it is very often one political defamation
can indict two presidential campaigns, but this one does.
"Anonymous" is again right on. We had Bill ClintonMy Life
and his sexual escapades that almost got him impeached.
There is very little doubt he is the man portrayed in this movie.
Or that the current presidential candidate Hilary Clinton
is the wife we see who has a close friend who is a
lawyer. Sometimes you think that the sexes have been changed to protect the guilty,
but other than that the players are still as silly and still as deadly.
Today, Living History, Senator from New York, has a second chance to mess up history!

5 out of 5 stars Bill and Hillary.......2006-07-10

Although the author denies any connection between this book and the Clintons, it is quite obvious after reading it that the book is based 100% on the Clintons. Right down to Bill's indescretions with the ladies and the way 'he' approaches everything. Of course, the characters are renamed and there are a few more colorful characters thrown in to spice their life up even more. I also watched the movie version of the book and that really screamed out 'Clintons'. I have no idea why the author couldn't write a book about their actual lives. Maybe he smelled 'lawsuit'. Either way, this book follows the characters throught an election bid and the trials and tribulations that occurs mainly due to the runners life upsets. A 'lady' steps forward with tapes of the 'president' talking dirty to her on the telephone (sound familiar)? He also sleeps with a young girl of a friend. Not an intern but on the same kind of line. I do fully recommend this book and the movie too. In the movie, a plumped up John Travolta plays 'Clinton' and what a wonderful job he does. See for yourselves.

4 out of 5 stars John Travolta in one of his few good films.......2006-02-28

The movie Primary Colors isn't anything special if you know (or rather willing to admit) who and what Bill Clinton is. For most people who love Clinton they have a huge blindspot for any of his negatives, much like people do for Reagan and Bush. With that said though John Travolta plays a fantastic Bill Clinton. Watching this film may seem like a comedy but it's not: this is really how it happens. I was there right smack in the middle of the Clinton campaign in 1992 and suffice to say the movie embellishes a lot, what's important is the man himself. Travolta captures Candidate Clinton like no other, from the handshake at the beginning fo the film to ...well you'll just have to watch the movie. What you won't see if Hillary. Ironically she did not become her present day self until the middle of the first term so in some ways you get a skewed image of her.

Billy Bob Thornton as the non-public side of James Carville puts in an excellent performance as does Kathy Bates (as always). What this film lacks in a way is the brutal nature of the 92 campaign. It's a satire so take it with a grain of salt but there's no doubt you're looking at the real Bill Clinton. What makes this movie great is that you're looking at politics as it it, most of the time.

2 out of 5 stars Deeply Flawed.......2005-11-12

This movie has some great moments that give one hope for what it could have been. Emma Thompson in particular shines in her role as the candidate's wife. However a terribly hokey script full of over-the-top metaphors about the moon and wild boars, characters who are too underwritten to win the empathy of the audience, a running time that's 45 minutes longer than it needs to be and a really, really, REALLY bad score (Seriously the worst I've heard in a major studio release film -- it sounds like a ten-year-old's piano recital or something.) sink this movie into the bottom of the commercial stratosphere.

Most disappointing of all are the two characters the audience is supposed to have the most empathy for. There's Libby, played by Kathy Bates, whose character trajectory is unbelievably manipulative. Sadly I can't be more specific about this without spoiling a major plot "twist" -- suffice it to say that filmmakers try to manipulate you into feeling something for both her and her cause -- not through good writing, but through an action that it made little sense for her to take. Then there's Henry Burton, the campaign manager through whose eyes we see all of this. His innocence and idealism are supposed to be challenged over and over again but the screenplay never presents him with any real moral delimmas. Instead he gets just a lot of sad music playing over soft-focus close-ups, a completely unresolved subplot with his girlfriend, a background involving him being the grandson of a civil rights leader that is never delved into and a character that is never fully developed. When the credits roll, we still have no idea who he is and what it is he stands for -- and the same can be said of this entire movie.

The DVD has no extras to speak of, just production notes and a trailer that make it hardly worth having a DVD instead of a video. Characters in this movie talk a lot about the importance of making history. The true events it's based on did, in fact, make history. (The fact that this film is actually a fictionalization of the Clintons is no secret.) But at this point, I think it's safe to say that this is one aspect of the Clinton administration even Democrats don't want to revist, so there's little hope of nostalgia ever saving this movie from the only spot in history it has managed to earn: the ash heaps.

It was not just "let's see how fast we can get to the next scene with guys in their underwear". The plot is flawed by silly dialouge, and bad direction. Not really a horror movie...it still delivers on a small level...

This is the second film in the "Brotherhood" series of low budget homoerotic horror films directed by David DeCoteau. I preordered it on the strength of the amazingly sexy stills and trailer I've seen. It looks as if this will be even more fun than the first Brotherhood. Cuter guys, more underwear scenes, two warlocks in the bedchamber with one woman, etc. By the way, if you're interested in the original entry in the series please be aware that there are several films with the same or similar titles. If you're looking for sexy vampires running around in their boxer briefs then you want the one directed by DeCoteau, who also made the infamous "Voodoo Academy".

For the best Ashtanga teacher in the US, look no further than Richard Freeman. This DVD is a little slow at first, but if you watch carefully, will give you many slight adjustments that will help you in the long run as you advance in this vigorous and rewarding yoga practice. The instruction is clear and direct. There isn't a laugh track, so it's hard to tell at times, because his delivery is DRY, but Richard is also very funny. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ashtanga with Darby.......2006-01-20

For several years I have practiced either with Darby or at his school (and elsewhere). This DVD is the closest thing to training personnally with him. It is bilingual (English and French options) with 2 types of Ashtanga sessions, 45 and 90 mins. It has a simple presentation yet with all the benefits. So far, I have been unable to find a better DVD to assist my practice.

4 out of 5 stars Need some middle ground........2005-08-07

Little background: been doing yoga off and on for a couple years now and this was what got me back into one of my "on" periods. So while I'm not a newcomer to yoga I was one in reference to how flexible/strong my body was.

This DVD does have a lot of really good stuff for the beginner or advanced. The 90 minute series is truly where this DVD shines as they do a complete body "stretch" and the two person setup allows for showing the beginner an alternative pose to one which Darby (the main practitioner) is doing (sometimes the positions are simply impossible for the new/intermediate level). Combine this with the 10 minute "Sun Salutation" section for the quick "morning wake up" and this is well worth the 4 stars.

So why not 5? The 90 minute version is bit long (it actually stetches almost to two hours) which as a person with a fairly hectic schedule means I almost never do this portion of the DVD. The 30 minute version (which start to finish really takes about 45 minutes) might seem to a good middle ground (and for the most part it is), but I have found it to be lacking in several aspects. The forward facing portion of the legs (quadricep mostly) is completely ignored and excepting the cobra position of the numerous sun salutations the same can be said for the stomach area. Outer hips area, neck/shoulder area fall victim as well (though the latter to get worked, just not as heavily as others). If however you want dramatically increase you're hamstring/groin flexibility and get a ton of push-ups in the 30 minute is for you.

Basically I just think they did an excellent job on the 90, but ended up skimping a bit on the 30...truly a 60 minute instead of the 30 would have been ideal with the 90 for someone who wants a heavy work over

5 out of 5 stars Simply superb .......2005-01-25

Being an owner and user of all what is available of Ashtanga Yoga videos and DVD I can without hesitation say that this is, if not the best, then among the best practice DVD that is available. It's suitable for both the beginner and the experienced practitioner, who want to gain new insight to there practice.
Darby is an excellent Certified Ashtanga Yoga Teacher, and a very reliable authority in his area. His deep knowledge and insight to the Ashtanga Yoga is brilliant served in this production, and everyone doing Ashtanga or has any interest in it, should treat them self to this experience. Here you don't just get a demonstration, you also get cues and advises that are coming from somebody who really knows his business, and also have the skills to teach it to others.
The video is very professional made, nice setting, two persons practising, Nicole Bordeleau doing modifications, so that the novice can follow, and Darby in the back, gracefully demonstration the movements and positions of the Ashtanga Yoga first series. There are lots of verbal cues and advices that make it easy and very insightful to listen to while practicing. Amongst others, the goodies include a break down of the Sun Salutation, and advice to teachers, that everyone practicing can benefit from learning.
A must to own if you practice, or want to practice the art of Ashtanga Yoga.

5 out of 5 stars A Fiercely Moving Film Of And By Not Just Pretty Women.......2000-12-06

I literally just finished viewing Erin Brockovich on DVD at my computer. No kids, no distracted noises, just a 19" monitor, a bowl of cheesy fish, and my full attention. And I must say, I am impressed, moved, and smiling.

Erin Brockovich is one of those lone justice crowd pleasers, like ''Norma Rae'' or ''Silkwood,'' in which a workaday woman dares to fight the system because she's too stubborn, or foolhardy, to know that she's not supposed to. Julia Roberts' feisty, take no prisoners Erin coerces her way into an entry level job at a scruffy Los Angeles law office, where the attorney in charge is a middle aged ulcer candidate named Ed Masry, played subtlely charming by (Albert Finney).

Assigned to do some paperwork on what looks like a trivial pro bono case, Erin stumbles upon a hidden epidemic. Dozens of residents in nearby Hinkley have fallen victim to multiple tumors, degenerative organs, and other freak afflictions, yet no one has surmised that the wave of catastrophic illness might have something to do with Pacific Gas & Electric, the industrial plant on the edge of town. With little to go on but her gut, Erin learns that PG&E has employed a deadly form of chromium as an antirust agent, thereby contaminating the local water supply.

Why does Erin alone see through the company's lies? Mostly because of how torn up she is over the victims. She's wounded by their plight, especially that of the tremulous, naive Mrs. Jensen (played with touching vulnerability by Marg Helgenberger). The result is that her investigation never feels overtly noble or righteous; it's a matter of sheer empathetic will.

''Erin Brockovich'' is based on a true story. The movie is consistently engrossing. Its surprise -- and its pleasure -- is the plainspoken humanity of its outrage, its utter absence of demagoguery and hype. The arc of the tale may be conventional, but Roberts, in her most forceful dramatic performance, allows us to take in every moment through fresh, impassioned eyes.

Erin Brockovich herself, (a waitress in the diner scene) who speaks as passionately and powerfully in the DVD extra as Roberts performed on screen, is to be heroically lauded against villainous corporations and an apathetic legal system. She also answered a question I had about the real story, "This was not about the money. This was about them. They as a people came together, united, and fought for themselves, their children and their children's children."

A fiercely moving, sometimes laugh out loud funny scenes story that is victorious in fore fronting decency and right from wrong while gently pushing us all to believe we CAN make a difference.
