5 out of 5 stars Lord have mercy!!.......2007-08-04

Why aren't these guys, like, the most popular rock band in the world right now? These guys have more talent than any three of my favorite bands put together - I'm talking Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles rolled into one. Love these guys!!! And they've put together an amazing concert DVD here. Next best thing to seeing them live. I'm in love with this band.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best DVD's I've Seen .......2007-08-03

I'm a drummer and also have an interest in photography/ videography. Being a huge fan of Porcupine Tree, when I discovered this DVD, I bought it immediately. The band plays great as usual during this live show, but what really impressed me was the camera work. The video company who shot this DVD really knows music and found some of the best camera angles I've seen on a live show. Their use of focus shifting and colorization is spectacular. It goes without saying that the band's musicianship is awesome, and Gavin Harrison's drumming is inspiring. If you are a fan of Porcupine Tree, definitely buy this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars PT DVD.......2007-07-09

I was almost afraid to watch this. By some miracle, I was introduced to the music of Porcupine Tree just a couple of years ago. In Absentia was my first experience, and I fell in love with the music. For some reason, the music of PT touches me deeply and is like a salve for the soul. So, I was afraid to see the DVD, because, other bands that I really liked alot, lost the mystique, or something, when I saw them. But, not this band! Matter of fact, I'm even more taken with them. And that Steve Wilson is a hottie... I highly recommended for all fans of PT. As for anyone who's never experienced PT, well... You will either connect or you won't. If you can, you don't want to miss the opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars The best rock concert video I have ever seen .......2007-06-29

There is no way I can add to what has already been written here, nor should I try. I just needed to add my two cents so that maybe that one more good rating will convince somebody to buy this DVD. It is THAT GOOD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-30

Best prog rock out there today. Steve Wilson is a genious song writer. Musicianship not on the same level as virtuoso Dream Theater (that is - PT doesn't try to impress with speed and crazy good technique). But the compositions and lyrics are far superior (especially compared with some of DTs latest albums). This live performance does justice to a lot of PTs best/recent work. A must have for any serious prog fan.

The Snapper may be the funniest film ever made about an unexpected pregnancy. In adapting the second novel of his popular Barrytown Trilogy, Irish author Roddy Doyle brilliantly captures the hilarious dynamics of a working-class family, the virulent gossip of their nosy Dublin neighbors, and the mixed emotions of a young woman on the verge of single motherhood. Sharon (Tina Kellegher) is the 20-year-old daughter of Dessie (Colm Meaney), and her refusal to name the father of her unborn child turns into an escalating crisis that's as traumatic (especially for Dessie) as it is delightfully amusing. The film was directed for British television by Stephen Frears, but its flawless blend of comedy and drama made it worthy of a theatrical release, landing it on many critics' top 10 lists for 1993. Best known as Chief O'Brien on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Meaney mines gold from the role of his career, and his fatherly love turns The Snapper into a heartwarming charmer with universal appeal. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Too Little-Known Slice of Dublin Life (Charming).......2007-09-09

"The Snapper," (1993), a comedy directed by Stephen Frear ("My Beautiful Laundrette,") began life as a television movie, but was quickly judged to be worth being better-known: and so was given theatrical release. It was nominated for a Golden Globe, and still deserves to be better-known. The script was written by Irish author Roddy Doyle, based on his own book of the same name. It's the second of his "Barrytown Trilogy," coming after the well-known, successful "The Commitments," and before the equally-funny "The Van." It's set in a working-class Dublin neighborhood, and concerns the Curleys, a large, boisterous family. Now, I'd have to admit I've no first-hand experience of Irish working class families, or neighborhoods, and nobody we meet in this picture is any candidate for sainthood -- neighbors and family are nosy, and can be cruel-- but the picture's funny as all getout. It's got wit to burn, and hearing the way the Irish use the English language adds greatly to its brilliant charm.

It was filmed on location in Dublin, and the locations are fairly accurately used; furthermore, it appears to provide a fairly accurate portrait of the early 90's city. The film stars Colm Meaney (best known as Chief Miles O'Brien on "Star Trek") as Dessie Curley, father of the family. It's almost inevitable: you've got to say this is the role he was born to play, giving him a chance to use acting chops that "Star Trek" sure doesn't. Meaney must have known practically from birth that his "everyman" face didn't give him a shot at romantic leads: but comic leads, ahh now. Rith McCabe nimbly plays his wife; and Tina Kellegher, Sharon, the eldest daughter, who sets off the action by announcing that she's pregnant, and stubbornly refusing to divulge the baby's father. Brendan Gleeson provides sturdy support.

Warning to the politically correct: you may wince at scenes of the pregnant Sharon drinking and smoking heavily, but that's the kind of girl she is, in no danger of turning vegetarian. Loosen your stays, forget your strictures, and enjoy her wit.

3 out of 5 stars Good craic.......2007-01-15

This is a hugely entertaining film, filled with brilliant Dublin humour. However - and I could be mistaken - I think that it has been cut in parts? I first saw this many years ago and distinctly remember a few scenes and phrases that appear to have vanished. I wonder why? A good laugh anyway.

5 out of 5 stars The Snapper.......2007-01-13

One of my favorite Irish movies! An unplanned pregnancy puts a working-class family through some changes that ultimately bring them closer together. Completely realistic. Explores the themes of family and sexuality in a warm, witty fashion.

1 out of 5 stars lousy script with nothing but.....????.......2006-09-21

either drinking, cursing, and laughing in the pub, or replaying the messy home life style. what is this? you call this 'one of the year's top 10 movies!', 'two thumbs up!', 'one of the year's funniest!'?????????? this is one of the most terrible movies with bore-to-death storylines i've ever seen. acting maybe acceptable but, with such a lousy script and a bunch of ugly young female actors, i have to pass. wasted my money was fine, but wasted 95 minutes watching this silly movie? well, absolutely not! rejected the dvd out of the player after about 15 minutes. thanks for nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2006-07-08

This is one of those movies you'd never have known about unless you came across it by accident on cable TV , like I did. I had never heard of it, but was lucky to find it while looking for something to watch on a rainy day off. This movie was one of the funniest, heartwarming films I have ever seen. The family interaction was so true to life, it was like being in my own home growing up. (Catholic Italian - very similar to Irish Catholic in nature). Sometimes the dialogue was a little difficult to follow with the heavy accents; and the conception of the child made you angry at both she and the father - and made you wonder why she chose the path she did. For the little things this movie isn't, it sure earned a place as one of my all time favorites. Colm Meany was the best. This was by far his best performance. The movie was so good, it made me late because I couldn't tear myself away, and even then I had to miss the last 10 minutes or leave my poor teenage daughter waiting for her ride after work. I HAD to buy it just to see the end. I'll be watching this one over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-08-18

This is one of the best music specials ever made. I remember watching on TV when it was first shown and recorded and watched it over and over and over. Below are the tracks and featured artists:

Boppin' the Blues (Carl Perkins)
Put Your Cat Clothes On (Perkins)
Honey Don't (Ringo Starr)
Matchbox (Eric Clapton)
Mean Woman Blues (Eric Clapton)
Turn Around (Carl Perkins)
Going to Jackson (Rosanne Cash)
What Kind of Girl (Cash)
Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby (George Harrison)
Your True Love (Perkins/Harrison/Edmunds)
The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise (Perkins)
Medley: (All)
Thats Alright Mama
Blue Moon of Kentucky
Night Train to Memphis
Glad all Over (All)
Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On (All)
Gone All Down The Line (All)
Blue Suede Shoes (All) & Encore

To pick highlights is very difficult because its all great. But for me the rare appearance of George Harrison is an absolute treat. Eric Clapton plays some truly blistering guitar solos, that put all the other guitar players into the shade, and Carl Perkins admits as much himself.

However it is Carl Perkins who is the star of the show and its great to see him in prime form. My only reservation is the picture quality which is OK but could be a lot better.

If you like 50's Rock 'n' Roll and a hint of country than this is an absolutely essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Carl Perkins' Finest Hour...One of the Greatest Rock n' Roll shows ever filmed!!.......2007-03-03

I've had the VHS version of this classic rockabilly special for years, and the sound and picture quality are just fine. I'm wondering if this particular DVD is a newly remastered version of this show since the original DVD released in 2002 has many reviewers complaining about poor sound quality.

The legendary Carl Perkins is one of the often overlooked singer-songwriter-guitar players of early rock n' roll who had one big hit in the 1950's before a car crash stopped the momentum of his career right as it was taking off. He never achieved the popularity or recognition that his peers Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Elvis achieved. This rockin' performance clearly shows he was in the same talent league as his better-known contemporaries. Recorded in London in October of 1985, this priceless concert is Carl Perkins' finest hour! At 54 years old, Carl's musical powers were at an all-time high in this show. His country-rock vocal delivery and trademark rockabilly guitar licks are more potent here than they were in his younger days.

Few concert videos capture the sheer joy of playing music on stage like this show does. When I saw this for the first time over ten years ago, I was blown away by the joy and spirit of the music that literally jumps off the screen until you find yourself watching it over and over. The music here, wonderfully directed by Dave Edmonds, is quite simply as good as rock n' roll gets. The musicians did a great job of recreating Perkins' classic songs in their original arrangements while making them rock like never before. When all is said and done, this masterpiece should be hailed as one of the greatest rock n' roll shows ever captured on film!

The real beauty of this concert is the almost magical effect that Carl's presence had on all his famous guests. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds, and Roseanne Cash give some of the best performances of their careers as Carl's spirit and enthusiasm brings out the best in everybody on the stage! George and Ringo have never sounded better, and seem more inspired here than they were with the Beatles. Ringo's drumming is rock steady, and Harrison shines like never before as he shows just how well he could play rockabilly guitar.

Eric Clapton's segment is dynamite as we watch him unleash some of the hottest solos he has ever played. Clapton TEARS IT UP on guitar during "Mean Woman Blues", and Carl's amazed reaction to Eric is priceless! Watch closely for a great moment during "Matchbox" when Carl jumps back in disbelief while watching Eric rip into his first solo. I love it!!

This show is pure joy from start to finish, but the best is saved for last with a truly FANTASTIC performance of "Blue Suede Shoes" that is nothing more than rock n' roll at its joyful best!! Anybody who still associates this song with Elvis needs to hear Perkins tear into it with his heart and soul in this performance. It is worth the price of the DVD alone to see Carl and his friends rock their hearts out with the audience dancing all over the place. George Harrison is so caught up in the music that he suddenly leads the band into a rousing encore of the song. Dave Edmonds sums up the electricity of the moment as he turns to Carl and shouts "ROCK IT MAN!"

The most touching moment comes after the music has ended when Perkins is moved to tears of joy while giving a heartfelt thank you to everyone there. The warmth and sincerity of the man is truly admirable as he showers each and every guest with kind words of praise throughout the show.

The music world lost a fine musician and human being when Carl Perkins passed away in 1998. This unforgettable show will stand as a great tribute to his spirit, music, influence, and talent. If you love Roy Orbison's "Black and White Night", Chuck Berry's "Hail Hail Rock n' Roll", or just good-time rock n' roll at its best, this DVD is a MUST-HAVE for your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Rock Your Blue Suede Shoes Or Your Beatle Boots Off.......2007-02-05

As an inveterate, avid, intense Beatle fan, I was thoroughly delighted with this dvd! Hats off to Carl Perkins not only for being a driving force during the inception of Rock & Roll, but for influencing George Harrison! George Harrison ROCKED! He tore the place up with his guitar playing! If you think he sounded phenomenal on this dvd, be sure to listen to "Beatles Live at the BBC" and George's guitar playing sets the place on fire! Check him out on "Youngblood!"

Although the transfer ain't great, the music and the artists are. Ringo keeps a steady beat and his former bandmate, the nonpareil George Harrison will have you rockin' your blue suede shoes or your Beatle boots off! His revival of his 1965 cover of "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" brought many smiles to many faces. Gear up that 1963 Ford Falcon and take a trip to 1965 with George!

If you love Rock & Roll, the Blues and some EXCEPTIONAL guitar playing, this is the dvd for you. It is just plain fun and you will find yourself singing along with it and don't be surprised if you find you've started dancing!

4 out of 5 stars great music.......2007-08-13

I enjoyed the dvd a lot. though i have seen there was supposed to be a 22 page booklet i believe when sold elsewheres. This did not come with my dvd. I sure would have enjoyed the booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Why have we never heard of Larry Jon Wilson?.......2007-05-25

I really enjoyed this movie. Several Guy Clark songs, John Hiatt and Steve Earle in much younger days, Charlie Daniels back before he censored references to the noxious weed from his songs, Townes Van Zandt, Rex Bell, and a hysterically funny song introduction by Gamble Rodgers. Also a clip of David Allan Coe driving his bus to and then playing at a prison in Tennessee. The high points for me were the song "Alabama Highway" by Steve Young, and a song called "Ohoopee River Bottomland" by a man named Larry Jon Wilson.

According to the sparse information available on the internet, Larry Jon Wilson was one of the "outlaw" genre progressive country musicians in the mid-1970's. His style reminds one of Tony Joe White ("Polk Salad Annie"), and it is apparent from the clip here that he is an excellent singer, songwriter, and guitar player. Being a fan of that music, I am shocked that watching this DVD was the first time I had heard of him. He later hosted a show on PBS called "Georgia Backroads" and I found a couple of references to recent shows. I guess fate and luck play a huge role in determining a musician's success. It seems a shame that a man of such talent did not recieve greater acclaim.

Great "candid" footage of Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, and others sitting around a dining table, with an unreal number of assorted bottles in various stages of emptiness, trading songs. We mortals are truly lightweights. At any rate, if you are interested in songwriting, these artists, or early to mid-70's progressive country music, you will enjoy this DVD immensely. And if you hear of any Larry Jon Wilson cd's for sale, let me know.

5 out of 5 stars A musical vision fulfilled - Townes Van Zandt and friends.......2006-08-02

I was stunned by this movie. I learned of it and purchased it in 2003. For various reasons it remains for me the best, most emotional movie I have seen about musicians and their music. The producer chose well: He found the songwriters that shaped country and rock for the next 30 years: Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Steve Young, John Hiatt, Charlie Daniels and a tribute to the late Skinny Dennis, immortalized in Guy Clark's "LA Freeway." I wish David Allen Coe had been left out, but no film is perfect.
The songwriters are shown at their best and worst: a drunken, funny TVZ falls into a rabbit hole and Silent Night is rendered by fine musicians too drunk to remember the lyrics.

This movie was made when I was a poor student and musician with a small circle of talented friends in Tampa at the University of South Florida. The difference is that most of my friends and I got straight jobs [we still tried to make a difference] but these musicians changed the world, just a little.
I married the singer/Business major I met at USF and divorced 30 years later. I still play guitar, write and record at home and dream of making it in music - but mostly I learn songs written by artists like those in this movie and try to understand the magic they have that still captures me.
When TVZ sang 'Waiting around to die' he brought tears to the eyes of his 70+ blacksmith neighbor, while Cindy comforts him. It was magical. TVZ does a "medley of my hit" and sings "Pancho and Lefty," and Rodney Crowell sang "Bluebird Wine," both covered by Emmylou. Steve Young's "Alabama Highways" was wonderful too. It was a look into my past - and the past and future of the intelligent, emotional music I love best.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse crew of pickers/rare footage/some better than others.......2006-07-13

This DVD starts strong with Guy Clarke down in (I'm presuming) his basement in the mid-70's pickin' and singin' "LA Freeway", as the opening credits roll; I'm very partial to Guy and Townes Van Zandt (2 of the major stars that are followed around) so insofar as their parts of the DVD, it's a no brainer 5 stars from my perspective. Some very intimate moments with Townes Van Zandt, as he's picking ("Waitin' 'Round to Die" in particular) and other times just horsing around with friends and, of course, a bottle of whiskey.... I'm not too fond of David Alan Coe being on this DVD alongside those, as I think his divisive lyrics speak for themselves (and i'm not referring only to the line in 'If that Ain't Country' but, rather, some pretty pathetic stuff from his 1982 "Underground Album"). In addition to my disliking David Alan Coe's racial leanings, the parts where he is involved just don't seem to "fit". Maybe if you're a David Alan Coe fan (and I DO understand not all D.A. Coe fans share his views regarding what all has come out of his mind, onto a piece of paper and out of his mouth) then you will really enjoy those parts of 'Heartworn Highways'. Charlie Daniels as well doesn't seem to fit but, to be fair, I (Spike) can't just 'mold' this DVD into my own perfect cast -- it is what it is! I'm sure the Coe fans and C.D Band fans and all probably wonder what the hell those hippies are doin' in there, from the other side've the coin. A young Steve Earle, Larry Jon Wilson, Gamble Rogers, Rodney Crowell and more all pop in and out to add some spice.... some interesting interviews and footage of just regular folk also contribute to 'Heartworn Highways' and, if you can just appreciate the DVD for what it is, scattered and all, then it's worth a buy. I don't regret owning it, and pop it in every couple years to watch again --- maybe pickin' my six string or "lookin at my watch" (Cash, 1994) during the times I'm not as interested....

5 out of 5 stars the best music film ever made!.......2006-02-23

Extraordinary performances by singer songwriters who revolutionized country music beautifully captured at the time it was happening. It's like visiting, living with these folks in Nashville and Austin in the 1970's.
An hour of bonus material that is just as good as the movie!
20 year old Steve Earle does a couple of great songs he never recorded elsewhere!
It's an amazing DVD altogether!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love This!.......2007-01-18

I have heard this album on CD many many times and so am very familiar with it. Generally, when I watch a concert, I like to hear the songs the way I remember them; from the album. This concert is very true to the album and to me, that is a major plus since I've always considered this music to be very special.

Do yourself a favor and get it! I, for one, LOVE it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Can't seem to find the words..........2006-12-29

Let me start by saying that Forever Changes is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have listened to it hundreds of times and I am still not bored with it. I seem to love it more as the years go on.

Last fall I stumbled upon this DVD here at Amazon. I have not been as excited about a potential Christmas gift since I was a kid. I emailed my wife a link to Amazon and said "top of the list for me for Christmas"

Needless to say I got it and played it Christmas night after the kids went to bed and the house was quiet.

There he was. The genious. The man who suffered internally but found a way to produce a timeless album almost 40 years ago that reflected his gift. And there was an audience full of people who also love the album whom I immediately found a certain kinship with.

Now to the content. Incredible! First of all the sound was flawless - from horns to the strings to the drums to the bass to the guitars to the vocals. Secondly the video production was nearly perfect. Whoever managed what cameras shot when really knows the album because he/she knew just what to cut to and when. I was very happy with the video production. The only issue I could have was the lighting could have been better at times on the stage. The details of each song do not get overlooked. What you hear on the album pretty much is reproduced live on stage.

Arthur was sincere and really into the whole show. The fact that he is no longer with us makes this show even more special and timeless.

5 stars. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The other "Sargeant Pepper" album.......2006-12-09

The original Forever Changes album came out around 1967. The first time i heard it, all those years ago, I really didn't care for most of it. But I kept listening to it anyway. As I came to know all the songs, I started to recognize the genius behind them. They "grew" on me - in a large way.
Now, if I was ordered to give up all the music that I had, but could keep just one "album" - this would be the one.
I could not even count the number of times that I have listened to this music over the last four decades, yet I never get tired of it. In fact, some of the songs still give me the chills when I hear them. It is a masterpiece on the level of Sargeant Pepper - just not as well-known.
And if I had to choose my all-time favorite rock song - it would be "A House is not a Hotel"
The music of the Concert DVD does not quite meet the level of the original album, but it is a piece of rock history that should be treasured forever. And maybe "forever" will never change

THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS (GUTHRIE,WOODY)

Amazon.com

The life of the great American folksinger is detailed in this 160-minute documentary narrated by singer Billy Bragg. Director Stephen Gammond gives us the cradle-to-grave view of Woody Guthrie as told by those who knew him, most memorably his daughter Nora, son Arlo, sister Mary Jo, and peer Pete Seeger. The folksinger's ability to mix politics with song and weave them together melodically is universally praised. Frightfully missing is a lot of footage of Guthrie; we hear songs but not on-screen images. It's as if Gammond decided not to go the usual route. It's true that dynamic documentaries can be made without direct source material (see Ken Burns), but this overlong film wears out its welcome despite some gems (footage from the long-forgotten documentary about the Columbia River for which Guthrie supplied the songs). Guthrie enthusiasts may find the film taxing but will revel in the details. The merely curious would do better to see Hal Ashby's Oscar-winning film on Guthrie, Bound for Glory. --Doug Thomas

Purchased a copy and put aside for a gift. Six months later opened and found disk defective. Replaced swiftly and without question. Fantastic!!

in particular the many interviews, especially with Guthrie's daughter Nora Lee.
I was disappointed by the musical content and the special features.

5 out of 5 stars This machine created a huge legacy.......2005-09-08

I have been a fan of Woody Guthrie since the days of the "folk revival". I have had high regard for his written musings and have followed renditions of his music since his own recordings to the Billy Bragg/Wilco disks. I was travelng a few months ago and heard an excellent review of a Bob Dylan exhibition sponsored by "No Depression". I was particularly interested in Dylan's early visits to the master while he was in the hospital. Indirectly, this review lead me to the "This Machine Kills Facists" DVD. I thoroughly enjoyed this fresh look at the life and legend of Woody Guthrie and recommend it to all with an interest in his music and background. I would like to see a follow-up that focuses on his legacy - his influences on the music we hear today and will continue to hear in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2005-08-30

I bought this DVD, prompted by a positive review in Mojo magazine. However, in my view it's a waste of money.
The 2-hour plus DVD has been put together as a production for MTV-brained folk with a 15-second attention span: not one song is played in full and the interviews are lightweight reminiscences.
On the positive side there are nice period newsreel excerpts and period stills and some talk. However, even these items are kept brief, presumably to match the 15-second attention span the producers condescendingly think is the most a viewer is capable of.
People interested in Woody Guthrie are not like that!

3 out of 5 stars NOT the best, but if you are a fan then buy it!!.......2007-09-14

For the record, I love Fish!! A friend who was in the army at the time (82-83 I think it was) came back from England raving about this band he'd seen in a club over there and had the Grendel EP. It was almost a year before I saw the "Jester's Tear" album and I have been listening to Marillion and Fish ever since!!

But all you people who are complaining about the decline in Fish's voice need to get into something real!! Who exactly are we talking about here - Gillan? Bruce Dickenson? Geoff Tate? No...we're talking about Fish! And I hate to burst your bubble, but Fish was never a great singer to begin with, so don't delude yourself. What he is, is a MASTER entertainer and, without a doubt, one of the greatest lyricists to ever set pen to paper!! And his voice does warm up after the first few songs but one doesn't listen to Fish for great vocals anyway!

So quit your whining! If you are a hardcore fan, a completist, then buy this, it's not that bad. The video and sound quality is good and it has a great setlist!! But it's not that great either. Fish's voice isn't aging well and, with his lifestyle, I'm not surprised. His band isn't bad either, but, as others have pointed out, it certainly isn't one of their best performances by any means. But this is a better DVD than "Fool's Circle" in any case. One day I was working in the garage (i.e. not watching it!) and it suddenly dawned on me that the band was really off that day. Had never really noticed before because I had been so focused on watching it, not really listening to it! So, performance wise, "Childhood" is a better performance that "Fool".

In my book there's really only one Fish DVD that's an absolute necessity and that's "Sunsets on Empire - Live in Poland"!! In my opinion it's head and shoulders above any other Fish DVD out there and ranks up there with the best of his (many, many) live CDs. Too bad I bought the only copy I have ever seen, though it does show up here on Amazon from time to time.

Bottom line, if you are a hardcore fan then get this. If you are looking for your first Fish DVD, spend your money on "Sunsets on Empire" instead. Of course that's solo Fish....hopefully you already have Marillion's Live at Loreley!!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the CD release!.......2007-09-09

I'm probably one of the few people in the U.S. that can say they were a Marillion fan BEFORE Script for a Jester's Tear. I had heard 2 live tracks prior to that release. The reason I bring this up is for the people who rate this for his vocal performance. Fish was never a good singer. His range has suffered over the years but that is hardly a reason to lower the rank of an otherwise fine release. He was a lyricist first and a performer second. I can't think of many people who improve vocally after 25 years in business. So, how would you rate this? For the songs of course. I am a fan of 'most' Marillion and 'most' Fish. Like many long time fans, Misplaced Childhood is my favorite. I did review the CD release of this so I don't have to break down the songs.
What makes this DVD even better is the interview extra at the end of the CD. While it is difficult to hear the interviewers questions, it is not important. I see Fish in a whole new light after this interview - and that is a good thing.
As a side note, to the person who suggested Live from Loreley as a better release, I disagree 100%. I find that performance to be among the worst ever released by Marillion. Fish seemed depressed to me and it showed in his performance. I prefer Recital of the Script from the old days. I realize that is different from most people but that should give an idea of the kind of performance I live vs don't like.

    4 out of 5 stars wheres the 5.1 Fish.......2007-06-22

Made the mistake in Atlanta in 2000 to try to drink with Fish. Been waiting on a good DVD. The show is great but the sound low and only stereo and for some reason want play in surround stero settings. If you are a fan you have to have it though. Next time I see him I'll bitch about the sound before he gets me drunk. The show is 5 stars only my pickiness being an audiophile keeps it from being perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Did I watch the same DVD?.......2007-03-14

I am surprised to read the glowing reviews on this disc. I was very disappointed in this show. Fish, once a great and distinctive voice, is reduced to a mere shadow of his former self here. His recent material is written for his (now) very limited vocal range and is OK here because of that. The Marillion material shows just how far south Fish's voice has gone over the years. Listening to him 'sing' his old songs is almost painful. No range. No power. It's obvious the years of hard living have taken their toll. Combine that with a sub-par band (Frank Usher is good, but he's no Rothery) and you have a disappointing listening/viewing experience at best.

How any Fish-era Marillion fan could find this DVD great is beyond me. If you want a much better option, seek out "Live at Loreley" (which isn't Marillion or Fish's best show either, but blows this away). This will only make you sad.

    5 out of 5 stars The King.......2006-12-23

Fish drove me thru year and years of dedication to his music. Misplaced Childhood is and will always be, side by side with Pink Floyd's "The Wall", the best album in the whole world. Saw him live in Lisbon and he is the definitive king of progressive rock. Unfortunately, Fish's solo songs like "Tongues", "Shadowplay", "Vigil" and many others top songs that remind us more of first Marillion years are not in the live show but anyway it's a lifetime oportunity to meet with the greatest musical poet alive.

    5 out of 5 stars A truly fascinating documentary........2007-06-26

Wow. Where do I begin? I was never a Björk fan until a few years ago when she released her album, Medulla. I didn't like it at first, but it soon began to grow on me and a few weeks later I loved it! Soon after, I bought this wonderful DVD.

How lucky we are to go behind the scenes of this amazing, intimate and innovative album composed solely of human voices! We follow Björk and other talents as they travel around the world recording and composing the album. It is raw and spontaneous and it's quite fascinating to see Björk in the process of making music. I especially enjoyed the parts with the choir and Rahzel. But really, the whole documentary is great. It runs at a brief, but perfect 50 minutes. I love it and continue to watch it. I highly recommend it, and not only to a Björk fan; even if you're not huge on her, I'm sure it will probably still be interesting for you.

5 out of 5 stars Important Album, Important Documentary.......2007-05-08

There is only one Bjork; there is only one Medulla. This detailed documentary shows just how much creativity, cooperation, passion, and effort went into the creation of a truly innovative project.

If you're unfamiliar with the album, all you need to know is that it was created solely using sounds made by the human voice. And it's amazing. The End. Me done. You go buy now.Medúlla

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Bjork .......2005-02-19

Now this is a different DVD, unusually clever if you really pay attention. She talks about the ideas for the CD Medulla. It is very interesting hearing Bjork speak in her Icelandic tongue with the English translations, she is fascinating. This is a naturally good DVD, and it is amusing to watch. It is amazing what she does with just voices and no musical instruments. Just don't forget to press play, as the opening song will continue to play and after a while will grow on you, :) This is a somewhat visual version of Medulla.

4 out of 5 stars the ghost in the machine.......2005-01-31

While there is something slightly unsettling about taking part (analyzing) an album as brilliant as Medulla (one could argue that it should simply be experienced - without linear analysis/discernment/overkill), what could possibly evoke more curiosity than the prospect of getting inside this remarkable woman's brain?

This is ultimately a work that satisfies at many levels, but primarily at the goal of figuring out, to some extent, what makes such an ingenious machine work: of getting a grasp on the ghost within the machine.

4 out of 5 stars Documentation of Primal Music.......2005-01-24

This DVD. in my opinion, was way too short...but I think its because I liked it so much! Its amazing how strange all the vocal pieces sound alone but when added together, get this huge, unorthodox sound. Its really a renaissance album focusing on the individual and the amazing complexity of the human voice. The artists in this film are definately no average people. I think, to make music like this, you have to walk to edge of craziness. Bjork definately thinks outside the box and this DVD really shows her creativeness as an artist. Plus, Rahzel, the beat boxer, is just out of this world. You won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Shot on location........2007-02-08

Well well well... This is a spectacle worth seeing. Filmed in 1910 and released early in 1911, it must have had a terrific impact on the viewer. It's full of special effects, flashbacks, monsters, appearances and disappearances, giants, dragons, demons and other hellish apparitions. There's a lot of nudity and agony, smoke and mud. But make no mistake: it's all according to 1911 standards. There still are no close-ups, no proper editing, and no acting to speak of aside from gestures as broad as one's hands are capable of doing. There's also no real story: it's a series of tableaux depicting Dante and Virgil moving through the different circles of Hell. It's all shot in broad daylight of course, in some weird looking mountains that can look quite majestic, but can also be no better than an disused Italian quarry. It's not boring, but it's very unclear what the viewer is supposed to think. There are lengthy title cards in very weird English, summarizing the action to come. Some of the trick photography is among the best that was available at that time (and men like Melies did a fantastic job even ten years before the release of this film); some is 'rags on a stick'-variety. Had there been at least a few close-ups, or anything to make it look more cinematic, I would have been much happier. The picture quality is so-so, it's obviously edited from two or three different prints that can vary quite a lot. It also could have been made more interesting using colour tinting for different hellish locations, such as red for fire and brimstone and blue for the ice lake. The music by Tangerine Dream became annoying very quickly. As long as it is ambiance background, it's OK, but as soon as the lady vocalist bursts into weird pseudo-Dantean songs, it's pure Hell indeed. I was seriously considering turning the sound down, but then I sort of grew used to it. This film might prove to be a bit heavy for those who are not prepared to sit through 1,5 hours of agonizing and slow moving journey that doesn't seem to lead nowhere. Then again, the selection of pre-WW I full length films released on DVD isn't wide enough to dismiss this one. But you need to know your Dante before you delve into this one, otherwise it's a total mishmash. A good friend and a bottle of strong booze would come handy as well.
