Even with Pauly Shore as the "star," this 1993 comedy is a bit better than you might think. Shore plays an insouciant college student asked by a friend (Carla Gugino) to pretend to be her fiancé over Thanksgiving break, thus discouraging a jerk back in her hometown from proposing. Shore's character agrees but is given a hard time by the girl's salt-of-the-earth family of farmers. The hero and Gugino's character actually have a crush on each other, and now that they have an opportunity to explore romance, their relationship is threatened by poor Pauly's tests of rural manhood. Shore aside, the strong cast--including Gugino and Lane Smith--lend this thing some credibility; and the script doesn't take any shortcuts in moving the characters beyond their assumptions about one another. --Tom Keogh

Description

Middle America will never be the same when comedian Pauly Shore (ENCINO MAN) travels to the Midwest and becomes the SON-IN-LAW. Shore stars as Crawl, L.A.'s funkiest college student, who's hilariously out of his element when he spends Thanksgiving at the family farm of a straitlaced college co-ed (Carla Gugino -- SPY KIDS). Crawl's unlike anything the Midwesterners have ever seen -- outside the barn that is! But before long, Crawl's plowing his way into their hearts with his outrageous antics and offbeat attempts at farming. Get ready for a truckload of laughs and a half-ton of hysteria with this totally irreverent comedy!

3 out of 5 stars Guilty pleasure fave of mine.......2007-06-03

I'm not sure I'd describe this movie as excellent, or one of the best comedies. I'll leave that to the classcs that have earned that, particularly through the test of time. However, the word "classic" is loosely interpreted these days (See "TCM" or "AMC")- comedy moreso. And "The Son-In-Law" has a comfort food feel about it, in spite of the presence of the obtrusive talents of Pauly Shore, of whom I don't consider myself a fan of, but indeed a fan of a few movies of his. This is my favorite. Direction of this movie does a good job of making you feel the different perspectives of its characters, especially for a movie that really isn't meant to be taken that seriously. I don't think it's any coincidence that this movie finds lots of TV time around the holidays, because it does have a warm, fuzzy, familar feel to it, especially for a "fish out of water" comedy. Shore plays that fish well. I had actually hoped for better future scripts to utilize Shore after this. But his run was very short lived. The supporting cast around him and a well cast Carla Gugino, the simple country girl whom Shore transforms from caterpillar to butterfly, too is nicely cast, including one of my favorite supporting/character actors Lane Smith, who in my opinion has a tendency to steal scenes in the movies he's part of. Long time fave Tiffani-Amber Theisan, and one time fave Patrick Renna, who put out his 2 best efforts of his career (including "The Sandlot") the year this movie was released), along with a few other famiilar faces combine for an effective cast that takes a simple plot and script and creates a fun movie that depends on archetypes to achieve it's end. What else would you expect from a Shore movie? Did anyone really expect Academy material from Shore after "Encino Man"? This is one of those movies that I find myself watching whenever it's on. It's just a simple, fun movie. And there ain't nothing wrong with that.

4 out of 5 stars Son-in-Law.......2007-03-08

Pauly Shore is histerical in this movie. A movie that will keep you laughing all the way to the end. It's the perfect movie for teenagers and early twenties that is looking forward to college or understands what college is like.

4 out of 5 stars excellent, halarious, classic!!.......2006-11-26

pauly shore is halarious in this sidesplitting comedy. read above for what the movie's about, anyway, on with the review.

the plot is very unique. these days in 2006 i'm not sure how it'd fly though, but in its day it was the shiznit. anyway, this movie is not only unique, and funny, but yet very unpredictable. nothing about it is stereotypical, except the continous laughter.

buy this dvd. 4 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Pauly cracks me up.......2006-11-10

Not everybody likes Shore but I find him so funny. We have several of his stuff on vhs and are purchasing over to dvds. If anyone can remember the way we talked in the 70's they will like his kind of comedy. I find him very amusing and I can relate to his style.

This black-and-white film adaptation of Tennessee Williams's Southern gothic play is perhaps more famous for the rumored off-screen shenanigans of its stars than for its over-the-top repressed sexuality (only Williams could pull off that paradox, and pull it off he does). Supposedly, stars Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor battled for screen time; Hepburn warred very publicly with director Joseph Mankiewicz; and a postaccident Montgomery Clift relied heavily on painkillers and support from friend Taylor during the grueling shoot. Even this, however, cannot top the events of the film itself, revolving around the unseen playboy Sebastian and his mysterious death, which has something to do with young boys, a decadent European vacation, and Taylor in a provocative wet, white bathing suit. To give away the plot would spoil the fun, but suffice it to say that what Taylor saw was so horrible it drove her nuts, and Sebastian's mother (Hepburn) wants her to have a lobotomy in order to keep it from coming out; Clift is brought in to do the procedure. It's all a hoot and a holler, but as played by the two leading ladies (both of whom nabbed Oscar nominations), it's also compelling, chilling, and utterly gothic. Taylor gives a fierce performance, as the climaxing monologue that reveals Sebastian's "secret" rests entirely on her shoulders, and Hepburn plays brilliantly against type as Sebastian's manipulating, overbearing mother. Only Clift, saddled with a dreary character in charge of plot exposition, fails to deliver. Adapted by Gore Vidal. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Love Devours.......2007-09-01

Love devours is the theme of this Tennessee Williams play. Us who have lived a long time and have loved deeply know this don't we? Love is like the flesh eating Venus flytrap. Somehow we have got to learn how to love in such ways that we do not devour each other. Tennessee didn't give us a clue though did he?

Thanx Gore Vidal for helping bring this movie to us way back in 1959. I would recommend it to the 20 something young men who are dealing with the issues in this movie and even to us 60 something older men who are dealing with the 20 something's.

Suddenly Last Summer is a cautionary tale: Love Devours.

4 out of 5 stars Fine movie, but slow at the beginning..........2007-07-01

I like the movie and the acting is mostly great. My only problem is with Montgomery Clift, who is slightly stiff in this movie, yet I still like him. Elizabeth Taylor and Katherine Hepburn give stellar performances.

Basically, Cathy (Taylor) is locked up in a mental institution with Clift as her psychiatrist. He needs to find out the shocking truth of why her cousin died the summer before. Her aunt Violet (Hepburn) wants her to have a lobotomy so the truth cannot come out. I won't say what happens, but the end is satisfying. I'd watch this again.

5 out of 5 stars Suddenly Last Summer.......2007-06-26

A lurid Southern Gothic tale adapted by Gore Vidal from a one-act Tennessee Williams play, Joseph L. Mankiewicz's "Suddenly, Last Summer" is a trifle campy and overheated, but rich with smart, biting dialogue. Hepburn is haughty and indomitable as an overprotective mother, while Taylor is rivetingly sensual even in apoplectic fits of distress-witness the climactic flashback scene. Mankiewicz handles themes of forbidden desire and depravity with consummate skill, making this a memorable "Summer" indeed.

5 out of 5 stars really puts the "gothic" into Southern Gothic..........2007-06-10

SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER is one of the strongest Tennessee Williams film adaptations, and that is due in no small part to Gore Vidal's fiery screenplay and the first-rate main players of Taylor, Hepburn and Clift.

The story opens in 1937. Eccentric and wealthy Southern widow Mrs Violet Venable (Katharine Hepburn) enlists the services of prolific mental health surgeon Dr. Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift). Cukrowicz specialises in performing the revolutionary frontal lobotomy procedure on those patients whose entire lives are consumed by their illnesses.

Mrs Venable introduces Cukrowicz to her troubled young niece, Catherine Holly (Elizabeth Taylor). Ever since Catherine accompanied Violet's dead son Sebastian on his last trip to Europe, Catherine has been plagued by fearful fits of insanity. In return for some important funding for his surgery, Mrs Venable wants Catherine to be the next patient for Cukrowicz.

But what exactly happened to Sebastian on that fateful final trip...and why does Mrs Venable desperately want Catherine to forget it...?

Here in SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, a horrifying journey into sweat-stained asylums and heavily-veiled secrets, Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn deliver tour-de-force performances. A lot of people still find Montgomery Clift somewhat lacking here, but a lot of that does come back to the character he plays, who is very much overshadowed by the two women. There is also some fine work from Mercedes McCambridge as Catherine's weak-willed mother.

Taylor was nominated for an Academy Award (in addition to Hepburn), but failed to win, partly because this was during the period when her tumultuous private life essentially got her blackballed; though she did manage to grab the Golden Globe for her performance--in direct competition with Hepburn.

SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER remains a searing and shocking movie experience. If you have never seen it, do yourself a favour and buy it today. You'll be riveted from beginning to end.

The DVD includes a bonus video montage of stills; talent profiles for the main players, and the trailer for "28 Days". (Single-sided, dual-layer disc).

4 out of 5 stars Don't wish for this kind of summer vacation!.......2007-05-15

Suddenly, Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, and Katherine Hepburn was quite a provactive film for 1959. Themes of homosexuality, cannibalism, and implied incest makes this film interesting right up 'til the very end. You won't believe the shocking truth about the unseen and unheard Sebastian. Catherine (Taylor) and Sebastian were cousins, during a summer vacation, something horrific happened to Sebastian, and it traumatizes poor Catherine into a mental hospital. Catherine's aunt, Mrs. Venable (Hepburn) wants her lobotimzed, she is so desperate to hide the truth about her son, she'll do anything not to let her son's private life come out. Fascinating performance from Hepburn and while Clift is great to look at, his performance suffers due to the fact he was relying heavy on pills and booze to help through the shoot (he was in a car crash three years prior to filming this movie, he was in a lot of physical pain). Anyway, you'll either love or loathe this film but it's defintely gonna leave you shocked in your seat. Enjoy!

A Sundance Grand Jury prize winner and a true conversation starter, Capturing the Friedmans travels into one apparently ordinary Long Island family's heart of darkness. Arnold and Elaine Friedman had a normal life with their three sons until Arnold was arrested on multiple (and increasingly lurid) charges of child abuse. Because the Friedmans had documented their own lives with copious home movies, filmmaker Andrew Jarecki is able to sift through their material looking for clues. Yet what emerges is more surreal than fiction: the youngest Friedman son went to jail, the eldest became a birthday-party clown. In the end, we can't be sure whether Arnold Friedman is a monstrous child molester or the victim of railroading. The portrait of a disconnected family is deeply disturbing, either way, and this film is further proof that a documentary can be just as spellbinding as anything a great storyteller dreams up. --Robert Horton

Description

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, and with over $3 million at the box office to date, Capturing The Friedmans is nothing short of the most riveting, provocative, and hotly debated films of the year. Despite their predilection for hamming it up in front of home-movie cameras, the Friedmans were a normal middle-class family living in the affluent New York suburb of Great Neck. One Thanksgiving, as the family gathers at home for a quiet holiday dinner, their front door explodes, splintered by a police battering ram. Officers rush into the house, accusing Arnold Friedman and his youngest son Jesse of hundreds of shocking crimes. The film follows their story from the public?s perspective and through unique real footage of the family in crisis, shot inside the Friedman house. As the police investigate, and the community reacts, the fabric of the family begins to disintegrate, revealing provocative questions about truth, justice, family, and -ultimately-truth. With an abundance of exclusive DVD bonus features supplied on a second disc, Capturing the Friedmans is sure to capture you and pin you to your seat.

5 out of 5 stars FU..raming the Friedman's.......2007-08-10

So far, this is the only DVD I've made full use of;I've seen every section of it,I consider it the most importand movie of the century-and I think it should be required viewing by all prosecutors and jurors(at least). This is the year of the disbarrment of Duke proscecutor Mike Nifong for his unethical, politically driven prosecution of Duke's lacrosse athletes. And it's also the year of Oak Park,Michigan kindergarten teacher James Perry's sentencing for molestation.Perry is waiting a second trial because his convicion was based on similar witnesses in the Friedman case.Hopefully he will be exonerated-and Oakland County,Michigan's proscecutor will face disbarrment hearings.

5 out of 5 stars Capturing the Friedmans.......2007-07-18

This harrowing film blends the Friedman's early light-hearted home movies with footage of the unfolding scandal, juxtaposing a seemingly idyllic family life with a domestic situation rife with anger, resentment and pain. Viewers may differ on Arnold and Jesse's degree of guilt, but few will maintain there wasn't something weird going on in that house. A bold, unsparing piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds one of the McMartin/Buckey case.......2007-03-04

The McMartins and Buckeys were railroaded, their lives turned upside down, and all the time they were innocent. I don't mean that the Friedmans were totally innocent, but the fact remains that no physical evidence ever surfaced in regard to all the allegations of rampant sexual abuse of young boys. At any rate, the entire family suffered for the actions of two members. The filmmaker wisely does not take sides but presents the material so viewers can make up their own minds.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST of its kind.......2006-10-31

In Adaptation, Robert McKee tells Nicolas Cage's character that the reason he can't write a successful script based on Meryl Streep's character's story, is because she is lying, and a story where the characters don't act truthfully can't work. But Capturing the Friedmans is successful despite the fact that the boys clearly are lying about something. In fact, people can't stop thinking about this film. Jarecki cleverly shows that as characters who lie, the Friedmans act very logically as they assume textbook roles of the codependent family model.

Clearly, the charges they went to prison for were ridiculous and even improbable, but something was up. The father certainly went to great lengths to be a family & community Hero (to hide his Addiction -- he played 2 roles) while the mother Enabled -- I won't say what -- by allowing the three boys and the dad to have a pact, a private club, from which she was excluded. After all, she knew her family wasn't right but she didn't go into his office or question the boys, allowing a strong secret to be kept from her in her own home. So the parents covered three roles - the Addicted, Enabler, and Hero. Next we have David, the Mascot, who immediately puts underwear on his head to distract the media's attention from his father. In the codependent model, a Mascot "clowns" around in order to distract attention away from the Addicted member. [He got so good at it, he's now a professional clown] A Mascot is either happy or sad according to whatever will get the most attention. When the underwear tactic didn't work, David went to great lengths to organize a campaign to prove his father was innocent--of these charges, at least. When the mother finally got it together and realized the father was a rat, he got vicious in redirecting the accusations toward her - again, any behavior that will distract attention from the Addicted/Dependent member. But his act is thin, because it turns out the father hid the child porn magazines where the boys would find them, but not her -- in his office and among the music in the piano bench. Being the main pianist among the boys, David must've looked through the music in the piano bench. So why did he defend his father? Jesse, the Scapegoat, took the negative attention by association and like a true Scapegoat, seems proud of it - winking at the camera when he says he will go to court and "abandon father." Also, in the car on the way to the sentencing, when David confronts him, asking if any of it happened during the computer classes, Jesse says no - but then his eyes change as he says nothing that HE saw, anyway. Seth, who declined to be a part of the film, seems to be the Lost Child (although I can't say for sure).

That's all the characters in the codependent family model. Wow. Looks textbook to me. So, Friedmans, notwithstanding the fact that you were clearly unfairly put in jail without a fair investigation or trial (and no doubt the prosecutors will suffer karmic consequences for that eventually), out with it - I don't want to say what I think you're lying about. Why don't you?

5 out of 5 stars This family took the fun out of dysfunctional.......2006-10-01

An utterly fascinating look at the crash and burn of an American family.
The father, Arnie Friedman, was witness to his mother's inappropriate and self-serving sexual activity; unsurprisingly, he turns out to be a pedophile whose penchant for buying kiddie mags gets him investigaged for child rape. His wife, Elaine, who looks like the years with Arnie has sucked the life out of her, walks around in a fog, totally bewildered that a)she married such a creepy little freak and b)her three boys prefers dad to her. Oldest son Dave is in his own state of denial about his father's problems and blames it all on mom. The most sympathetic figure is youngest boy Jesse, who was imprisoned for 13 years for a most unsympathetic crime.

Did Arnie and Jesse rape those little boys? The interviewed accuser comes across as less than credible - he contradicts himself, can't remember the first episode of molestation (though remembers plenty else) and when asked to explain an important detail, hesitates as though he were thinking "what the heck do I say now?" The Feds appear to have been caught up in the same hysteria that got a bunch of innocent day care providers tossed in prison in the 1980s - they used interview techniques that were more like criminal interrogations and hypnosis (reknown for inducing false memories.) Way to manipulate and damage little kids, you dumb cops.

In any case, Arnie is a self-admitted pedophile and his taste for child porn victimizes his whole family, especially Jesse (possibly in more ways than one.) Despite this, his boys absolutely adore him. It's hard to understand why - on their home movies, dad comes across as an emotional dud, with a flat affect and a distant stare. The most animated he gets is when he pounds out "I'm In Heaven" on the piano the night before he goes to prison. The oldest son David is especially an apologist for Arnie. He implies that if Elaine had not been such a cold fish Arnie wouldn't have been in the predicament he ended up in. You just want to slap Dave around with the facts of life: "David! Wake up! Your parents didn't have sex because DADDY likes LITTLE BOYS!"

Watch this movie. At the very least, it'll make you feel better about your own screwed up family.

In the tradition of Die! Die! My Darling comes this tale of a young heroine made miserable by a lover's eccentric relations. Gwyneth Paltrow plays a New Yorker who marries a handsome boyfriend (Jonathon Schaech) and--following a confidence-shattering encounter with Manhattan crime--moves to his family's thoroughbred ranch. There, the young man's dominating mother (a hammy, Blanche DuBois-like role for Jessica Lange) goes to war with new bride's claim on mama's Oedipal turf. A stock thriller ensues, and while one has a sense of déjà vu about the whole thing, the film is fun for its audacity, its underpinnings of dime-store psychology, and some gothic stereotypes. (Hal Holbrook is perfect as one's fantasy of a country doctor.) --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars A stunning beautiful movie.......2006-12-11

This movie has a beautiful storyline. Gwyneth is fabulous and looks great and her acting is stunning. Very attractive. Jessica lange is fabulous. I like when they meet for the first time and catches gwinnie in the nude. Cute butt! The actor who plays her husband is good too. This is a movie that people can watch from time to time about a loving couple and many exciting and entertaining surpises. Definitely an underrated movie.

4 out of 5 stars How can you be brainwashed by your own mother?.......2006-10-17

A rather melodramatic rewriting of a plot that could have been produced by Tennessee Williams. The black widow of a mother who only lives and marries to get a son and put her hands on a big agricultural - or so - estate will not hesitate to kill and then she brainwashes her own son into believing his father died in some kind of an accident. What happens when this son gets married and is expecting a child from his newly wed wife ? The attachment of the son to his mother is shown as perverse and leading to the rejection of the wife, of the mother of the baby to come. Then it melodramatically develops into a new criminal affair and the son finds then the courage, in the name of his wife and child, to break off and go. There is something incestuous and insane in this mother and the film sounds sad and unhappy, in spite of the positive ending. A son, a man, a human being in general cannot live as a human being if he or she rejects his or her parents utterly. This is hatred and hatred is nothing but the perversion of love and hatred makes love impossible. A man or woman who hates cannot love anyone properly and rejects herself or himself out of society. Hatred is psychotic and leads, sooner or later, to murder and death.

Gwyneth Paltrow quickly recovering (after hours of intense natural childbirth labor!!!!!) to go to the garage and find the evidence that Jessica Lange killed her husband and having the strength to belt Lange in the process and looking downright none the worse for wear to boot was totally unbelievable and implausible. There is no way in real life that this could have occurred! It takes days for a woman who has undergone natural childbirth to get back on her feet, yet Paltrow is presented as though it was as easy as getting a good night's rest and getting up feeling refreshed, full of vim and vigor!! Total nonsense. The performances of the principals, mostly Lange and Paltrow make up for the implausibilities of the script. Nina Foch does a dandy turn as the granmother but the scene where Lange turns up the cold water in her steam bath is also unbelievable. In the next scene Foch is revealed to be fine and happy....no pneumonia, no after effects .....nothing!! This film was one big disappointment and I give it two stars for the acting because the story is pure fluff. All the actors deserve better here!! No wonder this film was a "hush" at the box-office....it came and went quickly and I can understand why.

5 out of 5 stars from the chronicles of the clothespin.......2006-02-28

one of the best movies since a perfect murder yet out of the ages of time here comes another hit for jessica lange.. she was crazy here but it was a very hilarious movie...a definite MUST SEE!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars No one leaves Martha!.......2006-02-14

I liked the film for it's intense conclution that just had me so anxious it wasn't funny...but there are some distracting elements, the main one being that everyone except Gwenyth's charactor seems to be really stupid. I mean, the fact that no one catches on that Jessica Lange is freaking insane is poposterous. I love my mother, but I can even attest to times when she's crazy, never this crazy thank god, but this guy thinks his mother is a saint when clearly she has way to many screws loose. So heres my word of advise. Watch it at least once, it's worth that for the final confrontation (and the baby's delivery which is just heartwrenching) and then decide for yourself how you feel. I was just so frustrated half the time that no one saw what was so obvious that it took away from the real terror of the film. Jessica Lange plays a great psycho and Gwenyth does good as the distraught wife of a mommies-boy.

A superb quintet of older actors give the simple story of A Foreign Field a rich and resonant texture. Amos (Alec Guiness, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Star Wars) and Cyril (Leo McKern, Rumpole of the Bailey) are two British World War II veterans who return to the beaches of Normandy, where they'd come ashore almost 50 years earlier. They run into an American veteran named Waldo (John Randolph, Prizzi's Honor) and a woman named Lisa (Lauren Bacall, The Big Sleep, Dogville) whose brother died on D-Day. Waldo and Cyril have both come seeking the same woman who comforted them when they were wounded--but when they find her (Jeanne Moreau, Jules and Jim, La Femme Nikita), she's not what they remember. Nothing dramatic happens in A Foreign Film--the characters bicker, become friends, and go to graveyards--but in the hands of this group of great talents, small emotional moments seem full and rewarding. This is a sweet and gentle movie that carefully avoids any saccharine sentiment. Also featuring Geraldine Chaplin (Nashville, Talk to Her) and Edward Herrmann (The Cat's Meow, The Paper Chase). --Bret Fetzer

Description

Two British war vets (Alec Guinness and Leo McKern) meet an American vet (John Randolph) when all three return to Normandy on the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Old rivalries resurface, particularly when two of the men discover they are searching for the same lost love (Jeanne Moreau). A lonely woman (Lauren Bacall) with her own painful but mysterious memories joins the group, while the American vet's petulant daughter (Geraldine Chaplin) and bumbling son-in-law (Edward Herrmann) struggle to keep up with the exploits of their elders. This disparate band of survivors eventually finds common ground in the memory of what they lost on that fateful day in 1944. As seen on Masterpiece Theatre.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.......2007-03-27

WAT A FILM. SAW IT FIRST MANY YEARS AGO ON PBS AND WHILE SEARCHING LAUREN BACALL FILMS, CAME ACROSS IT AND ORDERED IT IMMEDIATELY.

THIS BRILLANT STORY GRABS YOU AND HOLDS YOU TIL THE VERY END. FINE, FINE ACTORS MIX WELL AND TELL A RIVETING STORY OF SOLDIERS WITH GUILT, A SISTEN TRYING TO REMEMBER HER BROTHERS FACE, A WWII "LADY OF THE EVENING", A DAUGHTER AND SON IN LAW WITH A STORY OF THEIR OWN, UNFOLDING AND MIXING BACK TOGETHER. EVERYONE LEARNS FROM ONE ANOTHER IN THIS FILM. SIR ALEC IS AT HIS BEST WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF WORDS TO BE SPOKEN HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS MANAGE TO CONVEY HIS OWN STORY

DO NOT MISS THIS FILM - IT SHOULD BE SHOWN TO EVERY MAN, WOMAN, AND CHILD, ESPECIALLY SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN. WHAT A LESS THEY COULD LEARN!

WATCH THIS FILM ... I DO, AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!

5 out of 5 stars Under the Radar.......2007-03-01

Why isn't this film better known? The acting is beyond superb; the story is bittersweet. But the real star is Normandie itself. It's a war movie without bullets, save for the one that wreaks havoc on one of the lead characters off and on for 50-odd years. Don't miss.

5 out of 5 stars Peace propaganda.......2006-09-08

I happened to see this movie on Norwegian TV and it made a deep inpression. It is not about war, but about peace and hatred. Remembver the scene where Lauren Baccall had told that the soldier in the grave was her brother, a German? and Alec Guinnes. the only one whose life had been destroyed by the Germans, made military honors? Hatred breeds hatred, revenge breeds revenge. And when Giunnes' friend told Geraldine Chaplin why he held hand with a "fool" in public places. The Story abut the trip with Jeanne Moreau is just fun.
Recommendable, and without violence. The message comes through without demonstrating violence.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely marvelous film - must buy.......2005-10-24

Was fortunate enough to have taped this when it was shown on PBS' Masterpiece theatre and have anxiously awaited for it to be released on dvd.
truly one of the best to watch over and over again...there are a few light-hearted moments but get your hankies or kleenex out.
the entire cast is simply superb.

5 out of 5 stars A Foreign Field .......2005-09-30

This is my alltime favorite film, ever since it came out. The combination of fabulous actors, every one of them, a great story, and a completely moving moral element. Anyone who wants to see any of these actors at their best, or see characters develop increasing sensitivity, subtlety, sense of responsibility and love toward each other, you would appreciate this film.

5 out of 5 stars That's my FATHER!!!.......2004-07-31

Funny enough I had never seen this movie until I turned 21 years old. I had heard my mom talk about my father acting in a couple of movies, but I hadn't seen any of them until this one. This was one of the funniest, worst movies I have ever seen. It was rediculous but hilarious. I couldn't help but laugh throughout the movie. My dad Marvin Jones plays Scarface Willie in the movie, and it was funny to watch him act. Cliff Roquemore was my father's best friend and it was nice to see his children throughout the movie. I give this movie 5 stars for it being funny and chock full of my family!

5 out of 5 stars Great Old-Fashioned Comedy!.......2002-05-10

While sitting on the couch trying to recover from an extremely painful tooth extraction, I looked around for a diversion. My eyes lighted on this video, which I had purchased previously but not yet viewed. I was not disappointed; this turned out to be one of the funniest movies I have seen in years! Every character and situation was taken to the extreme, the plot was ludicrous but oh so funny, and Petey's poetic jokes were hilarious. It looked like everyone was enjoying playing his/her role to the hilt. Petey's attempt to beat Lucifer at his own game was bound to fail, as we all knew it would, but it was sure fun watching him try to get out of marrying the ugliest woman ever seen. A few splashes of wisdom are thrown in for good measure. Leroy and Skillet were a comedy team who should have gone straight to the top of the comedic ladder of fame; they were funny enough to build a TV series around their shenanigans. It looked like everyone was having a great time making this film. I laughed from beginning to end and it sure helped take my mind off my throbbing jaw. This movie is offensive only if you are the type of person who takes life way too seriously and cannot laugh at his/her own human foibles. Though raunchy at times, it is a relief to view a comedy that doesn't rely on a continuous stream of sexual jokes to succeed, but creates a nice balance which results in a comedy all adults can enjoy. It has certainly gained a place among my top 10 most favorite comedy films. If you are willing to suspend any semblance of reality and just want to have a good time, get this movie. It is just the thing to brighten your day. Thank you, Mr. Wheatstraw and company, for reminding us that life does have its lighter moments.

5 out of 5 stars Ghetto Surrealism.......2001-11-10

This film is THE most deranged, horrific, nasty, disturbing, idiotic mess I have EVER seen pass itself off as a comedy. It's awesome.

At first, I thought this was the most inept movie ever made, but now I see that Rudy Ray and his partner in crime Cliff Roqumore made the first piece of Ghetto Surrealism to stink up the screen (This movie does actually bring to mind certain unpleasant odors). This accomplishment should not be denegrated simply because it was undoubtedly unintentional. Technical flaws aside(and they are plenty ample), there are images and scenarios in this film which play out in mind like a reoccuring nightmare(none of which I can recount without being censored). It is one of the most scatalogically obsessed films outside of Pink Flamingos or Salo, but I think it is more successful than either in its attempts to outrage.

The performances are all variations on racial stereotypes and ghetto caricatures. This film plays like some evil cartoon. Which is to say there is a devilish imagination at work, one with utter disregard for logic and restraint. And one, seemingly without any good intentions.

If you are looking for a twisted cinematic experience look no further.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Thriller.......2006-08-25

Daniel Auteuil continues to impress me as one of today's finest actors -- in any language. This is a well-done thriller with an outstanding supporting cast, but it is Auteuil's film -- and he is -- well, merveilleux! Don't miss this one.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, Tight European Mystery/Thriller........2003-02-09

This is a taut & suspenseful thriller/mystery from Europe that, while not breaking any new ground, offers enough odd touches and twists to make it one of the better entries in the genre. Set in London, the film stars Daniel Auteuil, the wonderfully versatile French actor in an English-speaking part, as a private detective with a past. Auteuil is gifted, and he makes you accept him as this troubled and haunted ex-policeman, with nicely shaded touches. He is complimented with an excellent supporting cast that includes Nastassia Kinski and other English & French veterans.

The film has a sad and horrific story centering it's plot, (a story all too true, unfortunately), and moves along at a nice pace. It held my interest all the way.

The violence in the film is dealt with brutally but with tactful swiftness, not dwelt on or exaggerated. The direction is by Chris Menges, the award-winning cinematographer, and he does a good crisp job here. Well produced, and well worth your time if you like the genre.

3 out of 5 stars Harrowing.......2001-10-29

My score of only three stars is primarily because I found the end of the movie unrealistic. I am a die hard Daniel Auteiul fan (even if I can't spell his name hahaha) and I like the movie uh...well...Sorry, it's harrowing. It's very disturbing and I was sick for a week after viewing it. I decided that there are things that go on in the world that I am perfectly content to be ignorant about, and child prostitution/pornography are two of them-- don't get me wrong. I'll support any and all efficacious legislation to ban it and prosecute beyond the fullest extent of the law who produces or partakes in it, but I just...don't want to know the particulars. So this film gave a glimpse (probably based on real existing arrangements of how someone "high class" goes about renting children to feed his sexual desires) of that underworld, and well... It was too much for me, it made me cry. Is money really worth ANYTHING???

5 out of 5 stars A superb international thriller.......2001-08-29

One of the best international thrillers in the last ten years. Daniel Auteuil plays a French private investigator, now living in London because of a tragedy that killed his wife and daughter in Paris. He is summoned by a friend he knew in Paris, also now in London, who tells Auteuil's character that he has a job for him, which is to locate his wife's brother. The brother--the lost son of the title--is known for his drug excesses, and so it is not surprising that he would be missing.
What is surprising is the chain of events that follows, taking Auteuil's character from London to Mexico and back, involving a prostitute, horrific child abuse, and corruption among the wealthy.

Auteuil does a fine job as the P.I., Billie Whitelaw--one of my favorite British actresses--is suitably hard-edged in the role of the family matriarch, and Bruce Greenwood is credibly sleazy as the dealer in unspeakable practices. The investigator makes moral choices throughout the entire film that are so dead on target that every act of violence contributes to the power of this film. This is a terrific film and absolutely worth owning. I am proud to have this in my DVD collection.

Description

Strange things are going on in a beautiful and decadent Venetian villa. A young mother (BLUEBEARD's Nathalie Delon) is horrified to discover that the imaginary friend of her son (Alessandro Poggi) is the second child she lost during her last pregnancy. Haunted by guilt, plagued by freak accidents and disbelieved by her husband (DANGER DIABOLIK'S John Phillip Law), she turns for help to a famous psychiatrist (BARON BLOOD's Joseph Cotten)… only to learn that the ghost of her dead child is a very naughty boy.

Based on Henry James' THE TURN OF THE SCREW and in the tradition of Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW and Mario Bava's SHOCK, this long-lost Italo-Gothic classic was directed by the late Marcello Aliprandi and shot in the breathtaking Villa Condulmer in Mogliano, Veneto. Painstakingly restored from the original vault negatives and available uncut for the first time in the USA, this subtle, disturbing scarefeast is driven by a sensual score from maestro Pino Donaggio (DRESSED TO KILL, THE HOWLING). And for the first time ever, cinematographer Claudio Cirillo (Ettore Scola's WE ALL LOVED EACH OTHER SO MUCH) has granted an exclusive interview, discussing the making of this ghostly gem.

3 out of 5 stars I Wanted To Enjoy It More!.......2007-01-28

Italian gothics, though slow, are usually rewarding. Not so in this case. While Whisper... has the right look, cast, and even a Pino Dinaggio score, it just doesn't add up. I wasn't scared! Sure, there were a few scenes with some decent tension, but never any real shocks. I'd recommend watching Mario Bava's "Shock" or Massimo Dallamano's "The Night Child" to see whether this is a film for you.
