Phil Hartman was one of the most versatile comedians of his time: whether he was playing the voice of Troy McClure on The Simpsons or portraying the pompous Bill McNeal on NewsRadio, his comedy was always fresh and outrageous. His breakthrough was as a cast member of the late-night program Saturday Night Live, where he satirized everything from politics (Bill Clinton, Admiral Stockdale--Ross Perot's misguided running mate--and Barbara Bush) to entertainment (Frank Sinatra and Phil Donahue), creating unforgettable characters along the way. This "best of" video captures his funniest SNL moments and includes the TV special Saturday Night Live Remembers Phil Hartman plus more. Among the highlights are the commercial Compulsion; Bill Clinton jogging to a fast-food joint (which, filmed long before the Lewinsky incident, seems surprisingly prescient as Clinton comments, "There's gonna be a whole bunch of things we don't tell Mrs. Clinton. Fast food is the least of our worries."); Discover the World of Science, where Hartman portrays an annoyingly daft TV host to Jon Lovitz's scientist; Barbara Bush hosting Nancy Reagan at tea in the White House; Cooking with the Anal Retentive Chef; and Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. Brief snippets of Hartman in a variety of his roles show some classic moments without slowing down the pace of the collection. This video also features SNL cast members Dana Carvey, Jan Hook, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, Victoria Jackson, and more. Of all the Saturday Night Live retrospectives, this is one of the most consistently funny compilations and truly showcases the best of Phil Hartman. --Jenny Brown

4 out of 5 stars Could Have Been So Much Better. .......2007-08-03

Anything with Phil Hartman in it is worth five stars under normal circumstances, but I think they intentionally kept some of his best material off of this DVD just as SNL did with their Will Ferrell edition. There were so many great skits left out here that I just cannot give it five stars. And that is not to say it's a function of time as some of what they left in was rather mediocre.

As for Hartman, there were few more gifted comedians in history. His impressions were masterful and an absolute joy. He had that winning combination of talent and intensity that is possessed by few others. The end of his life was a tragedy as he is one of those rare deceased celebrities who our culture actively misses. He continues to be an inspiration for the general public along with young comedians everywhere.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-09

I bought the DVD hoping to see one skit -- the funniest one my family had ever seen on SNL. We had it recorded on VHS many MANY years ago and somehow lost it. But we would sit and laugh until we cried watching the skit where Phil played the drill sargeant who came up with nicknames for his new recruits -- "Smiling Laughing Joking Around Man" ... "Man Who Reminds Me Of My Doggie" ... "Hair Head!" I thought for SURE that THE funniest skit in all of SNL history would be on there, but no...it was just a 20 second clip. I was SO disappointed!!

And it was quite surprising to see some of the skits they chose to show in their entirety...They just weren't funny.

On a positive note, there was a serious song and dance number at the very end of the DVD that was so sweet, it brought me to tears. And the bonus featuring Phil's audition was quite interesting. But overall, I don't recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars A must if you enjoyed Hartman's comedy.......2006-09-28

After all, this is very simple: you should have this if Phil Hartman made you laugh.

Yes, some reviewers are correct, this DVD could be better. Maybe there are missing, funnier, sketches; maybe the finale is too romantic; maybe ... (that's why it gets a 4 star rating from me).

But still, this will make you laugh and remember good old Phil.
Among others, you will find him impersonating Bill Clinton, Frank Sinatra, Phil Donahue, Alm. Stockdale, Donald Trump, Jesus, Barbara Bush, Frankenstein, Ronald Reagan and Ed McMahon. He also appears as the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, a russian weightlifter, the Anal Retentive Chef, and other funny characters.

Again, if you were a Hartman fan and miss him, get this. It might not be perfect but it's good enough. Hopefully they will make a second DVD with more sketches.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Phil is best!.......2006-08-28

Compulsion! Who REALLY remembers cut for cut CK's Obsession commercial? Superb parody. First airing I LOL 'til I couldn't breathe. And the Anal Retentive Chef! True madness. I'll treasure this DVD forever.

5 out of 5 stars Love Phil Hartman.......2006-08-03

We love Phil Hartman, we love this collection of some of his best skits and characters. Also love the audition segment.

    Product Description

Mike Myers is a genius at creating original comic characters, and it all started at Saturday Night live. Party on with Wayne on Wayne s world, Dieter on sprockets, Linda Richman on coffee talk and the best of all the others. Plus there s extra material, including scenes that were cut after Dress Dehearsal and never seen before now

  • Running Time 76 Min

From "Wayne's World" to the creepy hilarity of "Sprockets" and its slinky German host Dieter, this 16-sketch compilation showcases Mike Myers in his Saturday Night Live prime. Wayne Campbell and his sidekick Garth (Dana Carvey) are featured in two memorable sketches, jamming with Aerosmith and enjoying a sexy dream sequence with the babelicious Madonna. The Material Girl shows up again as the daughter of "Coffee Talk" hostess Linda Richman (who was inspired by Myers's mother-in-law), in a choice sketch with Roseanne, featuring a cameo by Barbra Streisand which is, as Linda would say, "like buttah."

More obscure sketches show Myers at his most bizarre, charming, and experimental. "Lothar of the Hill People" challenged network censors with not-so-subtle allusions to masturbation and female genitalia, while Myers's penchant for all things British is frequently indulged, including spot-on send-ups of Ron Wood and Mick Jagger. His portrayal of a hypoglycemic, hyperactive 6-year-old--complete with safety helmet and restraining harness--is both outrageously funny and more than a little dangerous. (It's a miracle that guest host Nicole Kidman keeps a straight face as she feeds the "kid" a chocolate bar, with the expected results.) And while other sketches such as "Middle Aged Man" were not likely to follow Wayne and Dieter to big-screen success, they show Myers doing what he does best: conceiving original characters and pushing them to comedic extremes. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Great fun, but could have been better.......2007-01-05

While this was seriously funny it didn't include his funniest stuff. Maybe it's a matter of taste. Either way, this is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars TOUCH MY MONKEY!!!! TOUCH IT!!!!!.......2006-10-27

This DVD makes me 'as happy as a little GIRRRL!' The DVD whets your appetite, as it includes some of Mike Myers' better skits. 'Sprockets' and 'Cawfee Tawk' is worth the price of the DVD and then some.

2 out of 5 stars Overplaying the Star Aspect.......2006-09-18

I used to own the VHS version of this, but threw it away when I realized that it had very few funny sketches on it. I agree with some of the other reviewers who said that it just seems like they went for the sketches with the most famous people in them. I saw the Coffee Talk sketch with Madonna and Roseanne and Barbra Streisand when it first aired; I didn't think it was funny then and I don't think it's funny now. I found it totally boring. I know there were better Coffee Talk segments.
I found the Wayne's World segment with Tom Hanks and Aerosmith to be pretty boring and not very funny, ditto with the Danny DeVito episode of Simon. The best episode of Simon that there ever was was the one with Macaulay Culkin, hands down.
Lothar of the Hill People is one of the stupidest things I have ever had to sit through, and the thing with Ron Wood, Liam Neeson, and Nell was stupid also.
I loved the Mick Jagger sketch and I think that Philip the Hyper-Hypo is hilarious. I had a cousin who was sort of like Philip when I was growing up, and he used to come over and destroy everything in our house.
The other one that almost made me soil myself the first time I saw it was the British play review with Steve Martin and Dana Carvey and (I think) Eric Idle. That is one of my favorite single sketches in the history of SNL...the world--BANG! the wooorrrllld!

4 out of 5 stars Some classic skits and characters.......2006-08-21

There are some pretty great characters here in this collection of Mike Myers' years on SNL from 1989-1995 and one monologue from his hosting in 1997.
Some great characers featured in here are Wayne Campbell, Dieter in Sprockets, Lothat of the Hill People, Simon, and of course my favorite, Middle-Aged Man. All the skits here are very funny and very entertaining. I highly recommend this dvd.

3 out of 5 stars Saturday Night Live: The Best of Mike Myers (Bonus Edition).......2006-05-31

I really don't know why this is called the bonus edition. I think you find that many people are saying that these are'nt really the best sketches, but from my experience these Saturday Nigt Live Best of Series are not strictly comprehensive. Mike Myers for instance has done so many high quality gut busting sketches that to take a sample of ten means that automatically many favorites don't make it.

It is worth the dollars and cents though. My name is Simon and I like to do drawings with Danny Devito, English play review with Mikey Rooney and Steve Martin, Dito and Sprockets, Nicole Kidman and the boy with the harness who can't have choclate, and some English toothpaste which is good on crackers, and ofcourse Coffe Talk with Roseanne Barr, Maddona and oh my gosh...

Also Lothar of the Hill people and Mike as Mick from the Rolling Stones with Keith Richards played by the real Mick "Mick you ignorant [...]"

Hey how can you go wrong with Mike Myers. If you are looking for a cure all full line up of great sketches you will be disapointed but the DVD is a good apetizer portion.

The opening sequence of this video, a lively and hilarious parody of a contentious Ross Perot press conference, immediately makes one wonder whether the public, when recalling Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, remembers Perot himself or Dana Carvey's dead-on impression of the eccentric billionaire. From his position as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, Carvey's skill as an impressionist was a national sensation, and this video captures him at his best, doing his Perot, his President George Bush (with the trademark fractured syntax and oddly disconnected hand gestures), and a devastating Carsenio, a diabolical amalgam of Johnny Carson and Arsenio Hall. Besides the great impressions, The Best of Dana Carvey also offers sketches featuring the insufferably conceited weightlifters Hans and Franz, Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth of "Wayne's World," and of course the Church Lady (who does her bizarre stiff-backed dance, rips into a mean drum solo, and of course makes her perennial sarcastic comment, "Isn't that special?"). Some sketches, such as one featuring the misbegotten character Massive Head Wound Harry, may make you wonder how it wound up on this tape, but for the most part this is very impressive collection of Carvey's best work. --Robert J. McNamara

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!!.......2006-08-08

I am new to SNL, and this was a great intro. BUY IT! I was laughing the whole time, my favorites were the Church Lady. (Isn't that special!) The Wayne's World skit wasn't that funny, but Massive Head Wound Harry made up for it. Dana is brilliant in it. You will get your money's worth!

    5 out of 5 stars Dana Carvey.......2005-08-07

This is exactly like it state's, "The Best of Dana Carvey" from 1986-1992. For those that know how funny he was on SNL, this is a must. For those that never watched SNL with Carvey, the dude is hilarious, buy it, you will enjoy it. It has a lot of great skits. And if you have children and want to watch a great movie with lots of laughs, you have to see "The Master of Disguise". Dana rules!

5 out of 5 stars Back In My Day, Dana Carvey Was On "SNL", And We Liked It! .......2005-03-16

Dana Carvey left "Saturday Night Live" 12 years ago, but he left behind a hilarious body of work only matched by Phil Hartman and Will Ferrell. He was one of the show's most vesatile performers of the classic 1986-93 years, creating a wide range of classic characters and dead on impressions. "The Best Of Dana Carvey" features all of his best moments from his seven year career, plus several from his eight guest appearances.

All of Dana's best charcters are here, including the Church Lady, Hans of Hans and Franz, Garth Algar, Grumpy Old Man, Ross Perot and of course, President George H.W. Bush. All of the sketches featured here are hilarious (though I would have preferred a full "Church Chat" bit and the 1988 and 1992 debates sketch with Bush). Also there's a great montage of all his most memorable impressions including George Michael, James Stewart, Paul McCartney and John Travolta and the infamous Il Cantore sketch. The funniest sketch is the Tom Brokaw segment where he's going over various ways of announcing Gerald Ford's deah. As the sketch progresses, each potential from of death gets more absurd, from commmiting suicide to getting eaten by wolves.

If there's any complaints I have, is that are no Ching Chang or "Nightline" sketches (Dana Carvey's impression of Ted Koppell was so hilarious). But still, this is a hilarious look at Carvey's amazing "SNL" career.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Sampling Of Carvey's "SNL" Career.......2005-03-02

Nowadays when people think of Dana Carvey, they think of another washed up ex - "Saturday Night Live" castmember who makes crappy movies like "Master On Disguise". But when Carvey was on "SNL" in the late eighties and early nineties, Carvey was one of the biggest comedy stars in America, elicitng uproars of laughter alongside Phil Hartman and Mike Myers, to name just two of the rest of that "dream team cast".

"Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Dana Carvey" captures the 6 1/2 years Carvey spent as a cast member on the show. It features all of his most popular recurring characters (though I can't help but notice they didn't include any sketches with Ching Chang, the stereotypical Chinese chicken shop owner who Carvey played 8 times on the show), including the Church Lady, Garth from "Wayne's World", Hans from "Pumping Up With Hans And Franz" and the Grumpy Old Man who used to be a commentator on "Weekend Update". Also included is the infamous "Massive Headwound Harry". This sketch may be disgusting, but it's hilarious.

However, many of the best moments on this dvd are when Carvey is impersonating famous people, whether they're politicians or entertainers. Whether he's doing Ross Perot, Tom Brokaw (the best sketch on the dvd) or President George W. Bush (interesting fact: Carvey has portrayed prez 41 38 times, the second most recurring impression after Darrell Hammond's Bill Clinton (73 times)), he made you feel like he was really them.

Overall, this is an excellent documentation of Carvey's career on "Saturday Night Live". Here's hoping that Carvey gets his career back on track and has a big hit film, because a talent like him truly deserves one.

(Note: Also check out Carvey in "Wayne's World)

    5 out of 5 stars Well, Isn't This Special.......2004-07-11

Dana Carvey may have left "Saturday Night live" in 1993, but his legacy still lives on. Along with Phil Hartman, he was the most versatile actor of the show's 1986 - 94 seasons, creating a variety of classic impressions and zany characters. This dvd shows just how amazing he was in those seven years (plus the years he came back to host).

Unlike Phil Hartman's dvd, this disc I have no complaints about. If you like good, old - fashioned American comedy, then look no further here. On this dvd, Carvey's most popular comic creatiosn are here. Whether you enjoy the sarcastic Church Lady, the conceded bodybuilder Hanz or the lovable Garth from "Wayne's World", it's hard not to enjoy what's here. Also, there's a series of his amazing impressiosn. In additon to two hilarious George Bush sequences, most of Carvey's repetoire is hre: Ross Perot, Tom Brokaw (the funniest sketch on the whole dvd), Paul McCartney, Johnny Carson (in the infamous "Carsenio"), John McLaughin, George "Look At My Butt, Dennis" Michael, Robin Leach, Prince Charles and a host of others. Even "Massive Hoeadwound Harry" is funny once gget past being grossed out at Carvey's bleeding head and the dog chewing on it.

This is a great dvd honoring one of the greaetst contemporary American geniuses. Highly recommended for "SNL" fans and anybody who enjoys laughing.

The Best of Chris Farley blasts through 68 minutes of the wildly hilarious characters the comic actor created while with Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s. Farley was a comedic gem--not only because he created such bizarre, repulsively funny characters, such as Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker, or Lori Davis, cosmetics infomercial queen, but because he lived completely inside the character, delivering lines with whatever fury, stupidity, hypertension, insecurity, or femininity the situation demanded. Clearly, Farley loved making people laugh and he wasn't afraid to use his big bulk to do it, whether it entailed stripping as a Chippendale's dancer, belly flopping on coffee tables, rolling around on a couch as Tom Arnold, or punching his forehead in dismay on the "Chris Farley Show." What's great about this collection is all of those characters appear; what's disappointing is that some don't linger long enough, while others appear a bit too long. The cafeteria-lady number could've been cut short in lieu of a longer Tom Arnold segment, or Herlihy Boy could've been removed altogether in favor of complete "Chris Farley Show" segments. Still, if you forgot how side-splitting Farley's portrayal of Dom DeLuise or the French-fry-stuffing Gap girl was, this video will happily jog your memory. --Karen Karleski

4 out of 5 stars HA HA HA HA GET IT!!!!.......2007-04-23

Other than the last sketch that drags on & on, the entire DVD will leave you grasping your stomach in hilarity. Speaking of stomachs, Chris' is apparent throughout.

My favorite is the chipendales sketch. It's worth it just for that.

4 out of 5 stars Chris Farley was AWESOME!!!.......2006-04-08

I'm a big fan of Farley and this DVD is great, except for the omission of a skit that aired when they first played this show on television the Saturday after his death. It has always been one of my favorite Farley skits. David Hyde Pierce, Jeanane Garofalo, and David Spade are all in it with Farley, in a late 19th Century village where they are all prim and proper and go ice skating, Chris falls through the ice and starts yelling and carrying on in typical Farley fashion yelling at Garofalo 'what do mean whatever shall you do, save me you stupid whore!!' I would have given the DVD 5 stars but the fact that they altered it to add the skit of the interview with some Wilson Phillips stuff or whatever (i just FF that skit, i despise it) and the omission of the Ice Fall Skit have kept me from giving it 5 stars. You won't be disapppointed, it's a great DVD though...

5 out of 5 stars Even If You Live In A Van Down By The River, You'll Love It.......2005-03-14

Chris Farley was on "Saturday Night Live" for five years. During that time, he blessed the show with some of its most memorable moment, from the Chippendales audition to Matt Foley, motivational speaker to the Super Fans, everything he did was uprorarious. Inspired by John Belushi, Chris was also arguably the show's best physical comedian, a trait hebecame well known for. Sadly, Chris died of a drug overdose in 1997, only 34 years old. However, his rich legacy lives on with "Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Chris Farley".

All of the great moments I've talked about are here - Chippendales, Matt Foley, Todd O'Conner, and so much more. Some of the lesser known bits had me in stitches as well. Chris was hilarious as Andrew Giuliani, pouncing all over Kevin Nealon (as Mayor Giuliani), making fart noises, etc. This is probably my favorite cold opening of all time. The "Lunchlady Land" musical skit may be just another way to show off Adam Sandler's hilarious songwriting talents, but Farley steals the show as the portly lunchlady (mole and all) rocking out as Sandler endless spews out choruses about sloppy joes and hoagies and grinders. And my mom absolutely loves the "Focus On Beauty" sketch (unfortunately this sketch has been heavily truncated due to time).

I do have a few bones to pick, however. The dvd says that includes all of Chris's famous characters are here. Well, that's a bit of an overstatement. Some only appear breifly in short montages. For example, Chris's chubby 1/3 of the Gap Girls, Cindy Crawford, was as much a part of that sketch as Adam Sandler and David Spade was, and to have her relegated for appearing 30 seconds tops in the drag montage was a cheat. Likewise, I thought the "Zagat's" sketch was hysterical, but it too is featured briefly in the same montage. Also, two characters Chris did often alongside Chris Rock, B-Fats (from I'm Chillin'") and Sandman (from "The Dark Side With Nat X") are nowhere to be found.

Despite these minor complaints, this is an excellent look at one of "SNL's" finest. We all miss you Chris.

    4 out of 5 stars A funny, funny man...........2005-03-09

Finally had a chance to watch this Chris Farley DVD last night. Like the other two I own (Will Farrel and Phil Hartman), it had some very funny moments, and a couple of not-so-funny moments. I thought the "super fans" skit was great, especially where Michael Jordan starts talking about his foundation, and the 4 guy's minds start wandering off ('da bears, 'da bears, Ditka, Sausage, 'da bulls...). I also thought the question about coach Ditka going up against a hurricane (named Ditka) was pretty amusing. Matt Foley, motivational speaker was hilarious! 'Look Dad, we got ourselves a regular Bill Shakespear here', and 'I hear you've been using paper not for writing lately, but rolling'. That could have been Farley's best role. Also, the commentary guy who kept using double-finger quotes, as he progressively got more gross ('a guy who doesn't let his scabs heal', or 'eats his dandruff flakes'). And lastly, as the guy who flips out when he finds out his coffee has been replaced by Folgers instant coffee. Thought that was very funny.

Some of the skits that didn't do much for me was the 'lunch lady' skit (looks like it had been written by 10 year olds), and the one where he's in drag talking about his latest line of skin products (Christina Applegate was REALLY miscast as Cher), and lastly.....as good a job as I thought he did as Rudy Giuliani's son Andrew, I thought it wasn't too professional making fun of a nine year old that has ADS. Overall, I'd give the compilation a 4/5 rating. The only skit I wish they included was the 'Little Women' one, where Chris breaks thru the ice, and hurls off a bunch of obscenities to the other women to rescue him. I remember the first time I saw that, and had stomach pains from laughing so much.

He was really a great comic!

4 out of 5 stars Good skits but alot missing.......2004-12-14

First i want to say that this does have alot of Farley's funny skits, but theres some missing gems and some of his better skits were shown only partially while some of his more forgettable skits were played in its entirety which made no sense to me.the only had one Matt Foley skit in its entirety which is undoubtedly the funniest character he ever did on SNL.the show a quick clip of the one where he steps in dog crap and falls through a window in the same house in another matt foley skit but they just show that brief part not the whole scene. Also they omitted Matt Foley as Santa Claus which was one of his funniest skits ever. Its on the SNL Christmas DVD but still that was no reason to leave this great skit out of his personal tribute DVD.He also does another guy at the newsdesk which they never showed the entire clips of.I forget the characters name but he always does the quotation marks with his fingers as he explains why some people don't like him.But anyways there is a few good skits here.My favorites are the one Matt Foley skit they gave us in entirety,The spoof on the old folgers crystals commercials "secretly replacing real coffee with instant coffee in fine restaurants" when farley flips out when he finds out he didn't get real coffee, that one had me aughing alot. And i liked the one where its like a 1950's winter setting with everyone talkng so nice and then chris farley suddenly screaming obscenities when he falls through the ice.But aside from thta as i said they left out alot of his best stuff.I am not sure if Lauren Michaels hand picked which would be his "best skits" but if he did he needs to realize his taste isn't in touch with most farely fans, they left alot of no brainers off this DVD that should have definitely been on this DVD.Hopefully they will do a better job in the future if they try to cash in on Farley again with another best of farely in the future but i am not holding my breath on that cause i doubt they'll do a best of on the same character twice.P.S. the one where he tries out for chippendales is funny as hell to,forget to mention that one, glad they included it in this DVD at least.

Saturday Night Live: The Best of Dana Carvey
The opening sequence of this video, a lively and hilarious parody of a contentious Ross Perot press conference, immediately makes one wonder whether the public, when recalling Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, remembers Perot himself or Dana Carvey's dead-on impression of the eccentric billionaire. From his position as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, Carvey became a national sensation because of his skill as an impressionist, and this video captures him at his best, doing his Perot, his President George Bush (with the trademark fractured syntax and oddly disconnected hand gestures), and a devastating Carsenio, a diabolical amalgam of Johnny Carson and Arsenio Hall. Besides the great impressions, The Best of Dana Carvey also offers sketches featuring the insufferably conceited weightlifters Hans and Franz, Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth of "Wayne's World," and of course the Church Lady (who does her bizarre stiff-backed dance, rips into a mean drum solo, and makes her perennial sarcastic comment, "Isn't that special?"). Some sketches, such as one featuring the misbegotten character Massive Head Wound Harry, may make you wonder how it wound up on this tape, but for the most part this is very impressive collection of Carvey's best work. --Robert J. McNamara

Saturday Night Live: The Best of Mike Myers
From "Wayne's World" to the creepy hilarity of "Sprockets" and its slinky German host Dieter, this 16-sketch compilation showcases Mike Myers in his Saturday Night Live prime. Wayne Campbell and his sidekick Garth (Dana Carvey) are featured in two memorable sketches, jamming with Aerosmith and enjoying a sexy dream sequence with the babelicious Madonna. The Material Girl shows up again as the daughter of "Coffee Talk" hostess Linda Richman (who was inspired by Myers's mother-in-law) in a choice sketch with Roseanne, featuring a cameo by Barbra Streisand that is, as Linda would say, "like buttah."

Saturday Night Live: The Best of Chris Rock
Comedian Chris Rock spent several seasons on Saturday Night Live, and this compilation tape of his best moments showcases his considerable talents while unintentionally highlighting how uneven the show itself is. Even in a video selected to showcase Rock alone, he is all too often mired as the second or third banana in an SNL skit. But there are, thankfully, plenty of opportunities in this video for Rock to shine without being upstaged by other performers or left adrift by limp writing. When he appears behind the "Weekend Update" desk to deliver an editorial commentary or a news report, Rock puts his considerable skills as a comedian to perfect use. And in the skits where the focus is on him, he proves himself to be adept at characterizations, such as when he dons a colossal Afro wig to become radical talk show host Nat X, host of "The Dark Side." One peculiar surprise about the video: some of the language in the "Def Jam" parodies that was bleeped out for the broadcast of SNL is here presented uncensored, so while this is Chris Rock delivering perhaps his cleanest material, a few choice words are nonetheless delivered loud and clear. --Robert J. McNamara

    4 out of 5 stars A Mostly Perfect Collection.......2004-04-03

With so many great comedians gracing the stage of Studio 8H at 30 Rockfeller, you'd think that it's so hard to gather the best material from only 4 cast members in a nearly 30 - year history. But this boxed set proves everybody wrong. Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Chris Rock and Chris Farley, make up this hilarious 4 - disc set. And while there's quite a few flaws here and there (more on that later), it's always good for a laugh and a half.

"The Best Of Dana Carvey" gathers some of the Montana - born comedian's best moments, from The Church Lady to Garth to Hans, as well as lesser - known characters like Derek Stevens and the slightly disturbing Massive Headwound Harry. Also included is a hilarious montage of his greatest impressions ranging from his classic George Bush to Robin Leach to George Michael. Great stuff.

"The Best Of Mike Myers" gathers 6 years of lively and hilarious sketches. While most fans will want this solely for the "Wayne's World" sketches, don't overlook other sketches like "Theater Stories", "Phillip" and "Tokyo Game Show", all of which are equally funny than Wayne, Linda Richman or Deiter. Also his Mick Jagger sendup (featuring the real Jagger as Keith Richards) is brutally funny to say the least.

"The Best Of Chris Rock" is my first sticking point. Rock spent 3 seasons on the show and gave the show some of his greatest works ever, like "The Dark Side With Nat X" and a host of classic "Weekend Update" commentaries, both of which are included here. But there are way too many sketches in which Rock is pushed to the background while another castmember outshines him and everybody else in the sketch, such as Phil Hartman in "The Sinatra Group", which nonetheless is one of my favorite "SNL" sketches ever. Still, pretty funny.

"The Best Of Chris Farley" is a disappointment. For five years, Farley gave the show his all. A lot of his best works are missing, while some are butchered to mere snippets in the montage segments. However, great sketches like "Lunchlady Land" and "Superfans" are shown in their entirety.

Overall, a great boxed set. The only one that's better is the 8 -pack that features these 4 dvds as well as the best of Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler and The Bad Boys. Still, it's good. Hopefully in the future, we'll get discs devoted to the best of Kevin Nealon, Jan Hooks, Norm Macdonald, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Chris Kattan, Darrell Hammond, Rachel Dratch and Mya Rudolph, to name a few.

2 out of 5 stars Frustration with just another "Best Of".......2003-11-04

Another "Best Of!" AAARGH! Now it's a compilation of four. How creative. When, oh, WHEN are we going to get SEASON DVDs of Saturday night Live? How about DVDs of ORIGINAL Saturday Night Live? WHY are they holding out on us?

Who WOULDN'T buy "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON" ON DVD?!

Imagine what a gem that would be! Imagine the special features on that historical period in TV history. Imagine having the entire first season at your fingertips. All the Steve Martin. All the Gilda Radner. All the John Belushi. Surf around to your heart's content, or sit back and enjoy from start to finish. WE WILL PAY!!!
Enough piecemeal "Best Of"s! Why must we settle for these crumbs when there is a feast to be had?! Too much is left out. With mere "Best of"s, we miss out on everything a full episode has to offer, from classic monologues by Richard Pryor and George Carlin to guest appearances from favorites such as Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson's Muppets to rarer yet still hilarious episodes of The Coneheads and Belushi's Samurai (to name a few) to short films to funny captions appearing beneath candid shots of random audience members. We also miss skits that don't fit nicely into any "Best of" because they feature several players working as a unit. We miss out on all the weekend updates. And there is a reason SNL has musical guests! In the old SNL archives are countless musical performances, many of which are now historical.

How long must we scour the cable networks for full episodes of one of the most original, fresh, and influential shows in television history?!!

ARE YOU LISTENING, LORNE?! WE WANT FULL ORIGINAL EPISODES ON DVD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2001-08-14

I love this collection of comic geniuses. I enjoy watching everyone of these comedians and their numerous characters that they play. I recommend anyone who likes to laugh, to buy this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great deal for some great DVDs.......2001-06-25

There are some really funny skits in this package. Dana Carvey is the best! Chris Farley does his "Matt Foley" scenes and Mike Myers plays the parts that he started his fame with. The Chris Rock DVD isn't as funny as Chris is in hit stand up. I found them to be lacking in quality (and a lot of his parts were not lead parts) but the package is a great buy just because you're getting so many other good skits. ENJOY!

    5 out of 5 stars it's a great contrabution to SNL alumni.......2001-06-11

This is a great set that should diffinently not be overlooked. I suggest that these movies are a must buy for all SNL fans.
