Not a strong production.......2005-11-04
The story of Samson and Delilah is one of the better known stories from the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. It seems strange, therefore, that films almost always get the story wrong.
This 1984 version of the Samson and Delilah story gives Max von Sydow, the governor of Philistine Gaza, the top billing, because the stars playing the title roles were not as well known. Belinda Bauer portrays Delilah in a sultry but somewhat flattened role, and Antony Hamilton is 'introduced' as a new star, despite having made appearances prior to this production. Belinda Bauer is considered an American actress, despite being born in Australia; Antony Hamilton is considered an Australian actor, despite being born in Britain. The desert lands of the setting for this film are definitely not Gaza nor the northern end of Israel/Palestine, so in many ways things are very mixed up. One does want to give a willing suspension of disbelief in any theatrical or cinematic release, but sometimes the small items add up to too much, if there isn't substance elsewhere to carry the film.
Hamilton, Bauer and von Sydow give tolerable performances, perhaps edging even toward good. However, the script is stilted and lacking in depth - whenever there seems to be a point of principle or 'meaningful' moment, it becomes a bit more like an item of kitsch. Each of the three main actors have turned in much better performances in other productions that one knows there is skill there, particularly with von Sydow, but it is lost in this production. Jose Ferrer, another veteran actor, has a slightly-more-than-cameo appearance, but is generally wasted as a pontificating priest without much depth. The script was written by John Gay (prolific television/teleplay script writer), based on a novel 'The Husband of Delilah' by Eric Linkletter. This departs considerably from the biblical text, and unfortunately not in ways that would give new meaning or added meaning to the story.
Perhaps director Lee Philips (also known for television direction in series such as 'Dynasty' and the film 'Hardhats and Legs') was hoping that the occasional display of beautiful bodies would distract the viewer from noticing the overall lack of substance. Both Bauer and Hamilton have sex appeal, but even here it tends to be wasted by second-rate camera angles and lighting, quick edits and cheesy music that made this a B-film even when first released.
The fight sequences between Samson and the lion, Samson and the Philistine garrison, and Samson and the Philistine army are poorly choreographed (the fake lion edited in with the real lion in portions looked obviously fake, as if someone borrowed a child's toy lion as the prop). The final Temple-crushing scene is tolerable, but even then the architectural detail is wrong - it was very clear the Temple did not rest upon the columns Samson pushed over, and the camera maneuvering to get Sidka, the Philistine governor, to be positioned under the falling idol was very poorly done.
I was astonished to learn that this production had an Emmy nomination, and of all categories for Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling (Jan Van Uchelen). Perhaps this was for Delilah's hairstyles, which are okay, but as Samson's legendary strength is tied to his hair, I found myself thinking all through the film, 'He has terrible hair!' Hamilton's good looks were generally lessened by having a bad-hair day all through film; it was only when it was cut at the end that he began to look reasonable.
I was also astonished to learn that the composer of original music for this piece was Maurice Jarre, who wrote the music for 'A Passage to India', 'Ghost', 'A Walk in the Clouds' and 'The Year of Living Dangerously', films that I love, and from which the music is memorable. This sounded like 50s or 60s retreads from other B-films, sadly failing to augment the story or the setting.
Perhaps the most detrimental part of this show was the cameo by Victor Mature, who played one of the more memorable Samsons in film history, opposite Hedy Lamar, directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Even that film was a B-film, albeit a good B-film from an era in Hollywood when such biblical epics and pseudo-epics were written to a generally appreciated formula. Mature plays the father of Samson here, Manoah, but gives such a sad performance here I didn't recognise him, even though I knew he had a role in the film before I put the disc in to view! Perhaps it proves the point Mature made once, when applying for membership to a country club that didn't accept actors as members, 'I'm not an actor - and I've got 67 films to prove it!'
This film apparently was also nominated by BAFTA for best short film, and I cannot but wonder what was lacking in short films that year that this production would get such a nod.
If you're interested in the Samson story, this will not be a film to give new insights. If you're interested in seeing Antony Hamilton or Belinda Bauer in various states of undress, even then this film will disappoint, as there aren't many good scenes for that, either. I'm truly surprised this wasn't an Alan Smithee production. I really wanted to like this film, as Hamilton made so few productions before his untimely death, and in general I tend to like biblical epics, von Sydow films, and several of actors here. But alas, it was not to be.
Watch at your own risk.
Two-and-a-half stars, rounded to three for purposes here.

Loved the good old fashion *Ghost Scare* then this is for you. Our family will curl up and watch over and over again...give us a rainy day and call it good with a movie like this (if you like Ghost flicks)
The Truth is Stranger than fiction!!.......2004-09-12
The crew of a reality-TV show about the paranormal visits a small Kansas town to investigate a house that may be haunted.
What makes this one so good is that it based on true events, everyone LOVES a good ghost story, especially if it is true. This one is VERY believable!!
If you want to find out more about the actual events, check out this site: http://www.prairieghosts.com/sallie.html
best B movie Ive seen in a long time, best ghost movie too.......2004-06-02
I was very impressed by this "no name" movie. The movie is based on an event that happened on the old series Sightings. It is supposed to be a true story and tells you the experience the family had at a house, and how the skeptics from the Sightings TV show tried to rule out scientific explanation. It is a movie, not a documentary. I think its one of the best ghost movies out there because it has a sense of believability: meaning it's not so off the wall you will say "yea right" its not a super high budget movie, the effects wont blow you away, but the story will. The Sightings episode this movie is based on is the one where the sightings crew actually video tapes a guy that has scratches appear on his body. The episode aired several years ago I remember seeing it. Anyway Awesome horror-ghost movie! If you like poltergeist or Amityville horror, you will like this

Hair Show is a lively and funny ensemble comedy set in the busy, high-pressure milieu of an upscale hair salon. As in Barbershop or Empire Records, a handful of idiosyncratic characters share the shop's load but are individually defined by peculiar obsessions or circumstances. Jun Ni (Keiko Agena), for instance, just wants to learn to cook for the husband who adores her yet who is starving because of her failures in the kitchen. Peaches (Mo'Nique) is trying to save her bacon from the IRS agents hounding her for $50,000 in back taxes. At the center of the story is Peaches' rivalrous relationship with sister Angela (Kellita Smith), who took a sizable inheritance from her late grandmother (Peaches got no cash from Grandma's will) and built the salon in which brassy Peaches might be the most talented stylist. Crisply directed by Leslie Small and co-produced by Magic Johnson, Hair Show is lightly but genuinely rewarding. --Tom Keogh
Description
When hair stylist Peaches (Mo'Nique) arrives in Beverly Hills to get reacquainted with her sister, Angela (Kellita Smith of "The Bernie Mac Show"), sparks fly! Angela finds out Peaches owes $50,000 in back taxes and is on the run. So the two sisters join forces to fight off a pesky rival salon owner in a show-stopping competition to win a cash prize for Peaches and bragging rights at the city's annual hair show.

Pretty good movie..........2006-07-28
...but I see why it went straight to DVD. It's not BarberShop nor is it BeautySHop, so don't purchase it because of that. This movie has it's own redeeming values..
The plot is essentially good sister does good...bad sister, does bad, runs away from problems and tries to do good.
I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the redeeming theme.
As usual Mo'Nique did her thing with the comedic talent...and it was equally appealing seeing Kelita Smith broaden her acting chops.
BBW- Big Beautifu Women.......2006-04-19
I really enjoyed this movie because it shows that just because you are big and a yourself doesn't mean you can't get the guy. Monique always makes me feel that no matter what size I am, I AM Somebody and a beauty to behold. The movie was simply made, but I enjoyed the friendliness. It was great. Monique, you go girl!!
Lane Kim (Keiko Agena)-.......2005-10-22
I got this movie because after a search it was the only one I could find for Keiko Agena that plays Lane Kim on Gilmore girls TV progam. She plays a totally different charactor in this movie though, one that does not smile much and does not seem to be a very happy person. I like the charactor she plays on the Gilmore girls a lot better. At least there they use costume to get a little comic effect out of her. She tends to hide her body and not use it as much as she could. She would be a lot closer to using her body for comedy like Lucy or Julia Roberts. She would have more distance to go to be really sexy looking and even then she would be sexy in a funny way. Perhaps she needs someone like Garry Marshall to really help her to develop herself and to more solid back up rolls like she does as Rorys best frind on the Gilmore's. It would be nice if she at least got more bit parts like Sookie. You tend to she her show up all over the place. Nothing big but at least they invite her onto the set for a day for a little bit of something.
Go Nikki.......2005-09-15
I loved this movie. It was funny. I loved Monique and all the other characters. It was a slight repeat of Beauty Shop but other than that it is a funny, sweet movie.
Put on your shelf.......2005-08-02
This movie was very touching between sisters that truly care for one another.

Customer Reviews:
Some of Weird Al's greatest videoes..........2004-08-18
After his very succesful Weird Al Video Library Tape, which released every Weird Al video to date at that point, it was only natural for him to continue on the trend of releasing brillient and creative videos for our viewing pleasure. Think of this as more of an add on to the pervious tape then a sequal as there are only four vidoes total found here. But not a bad one in the bunch.
The first song is probably one of this greatest ever done. A very infamous situation between Weird Al and Coolio over this song and video. A mix up in Al getting permission and Coolio having a problem with him spoofing a personal song of his. Either way it turned out great. The song being Amish Paradise. A great video to a great song by Al. See for yourself what life in an Amish village is like first hand. Building barns, selling quilts, and a special apperance by Brady Bunch mother Florence Henderson. This song alone makes this a worthwhile purchase.
Second song on this tape is Gump. A spoof of the song Lump by The Presidents of the United States of America and turned into a Forrest Gump homage. The video follows along the original it is spoofing pretty well but also has a lot of clips like former presidents in the background and some guy who is portraying Gump in the video pretty accurately. It's another great song and actualy pretty amusing at points.
The next song is intersting in not everyone got to hear this song as it was only available in the greatest hits CD set that Weird Al released. It was also released on tape on a single and a greatest hits tape but never on an original Weird Al album. The song is called Headline News and is a spoof of a song that was popular for a nice period of time named Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the Crash Test Dummies. The song is dated a bit in that the song itself pretty much just takes 3 of the biggest media frenzy stories of the year when Al was writing this . Tonya Harding trying to get Nancy Kerrigan, the guy who got caught in Singapore for spray painting there..and another one but I'll leave that for you to see as it makes me cringe thinking about it :).
Last song is one most will have seen if you call yourselves a Weird Al fan and isn't very new as it's Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies taken right from the movie UHF. So it's a filler video yes, but hey it's still very good. I thought it was a great way to spoof the I want my MTV video usign the same effects and even having the actual guitar player from Dire Straights playing .
The only complaint here would be that there is really nothing more then the 4 videos that equal about 14 minutes or so all together. Would have been nice if there were some extras or things to find after the videos ended. Don't get me wrong, the videos are great and more then worth it but like I said, seemed more like an add on to his previous and that works just as well for me. Definitely worth the price if you don't have a DVD player and want his videos look no further. Bad Hair Day the videos is a must have for any Weird Al fan.
I love this tape!.......2003-09-24
My children and I are big Weird Al fans, and I surprised them with this tape. It contains four Weird Al videos: 1) Amish Paradise (parodying Coolio's Gangster's Paradise with an Amish man gone bad!), 2) Gump (parodying The Presidents of the United States of America's Lump with Forrest Gump!), 3) Headline News (parodying the Crash Test Dummies' Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm with truth-stranger-than-fiction news items Nancy Kerrigan & Tonya Harding, Michael Fay (caned in Singapore for vandalism), and John & Loreena Bobbit), and finally Beverly Hillbillies (parodying Dire Straight's Money for Nothing with the Beverly Hillbillies!).
These are four great videos! As always with Al, knowing the videos being parodied and the new theme (Forrest Gump, Beverly Hillbillies, etc.) makes the viewing a better experience, but it really isn't necessary. There is a legitimate complaint that these four videos add up to only about 13 minutes, but for me it was still a good buy.
Amish Paradise is hilarious, with its highly ironic look at the Amish, with Florence Henderson and a fantastic reverse scene thrown in. Gump is great, with an excellent look at both the song and the movie. Headline News is just plain goofy, and hits the Crash Test Dummies right on the nose. And, Beverly Hillbillies, which was drawn straight out of the movie UHF, is a masterpiece at parodying both the song and the show. Overall, I love this tape, and I highly recommend it to you!
Four songs for ten bucks????.......2003-08-12
I guess I should have found out more about this video before I bought it, because I was extremely disappointed. Four songs for ten bucks--PLUS--one of the songs was the Beverly Hillbillies song from the movie UHF--which should not have even been put on there. If they did not have enough songs to make a video, then they should have waited until they did. I have always loved Weird Al, but it saddens me that I now feel ripped off.
THE BEST MOVIE EVER CREATED ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH.......2002-11-05
I have never seen this movie, but it still reigns supreme and was God's gift to humanity. Weird Al rocks, everyone else stinks like a buffalo.
A DOLLAR A MINUTE.......2002-10-17
