5 out of 5 stars It worked! I potty trained my child in one day :).......2007-09-11

I used this DVD along with the book Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day by Teri Crane. I found the book which appealed to me- after long, drawn-out potty training battles with my girls, I was not looking forward to doing that again. I read the book and planned my son's "potty party". This DVD was one of the library resources I checked out. We followed the instructions in the potty training book and things were starting to look a little hopeless. My son (3 1/2 yrs old) was NOT interested in sitting down to read potty books and the other 2 videos didn't catch his attention. I was afraid all our effort was going to waste... Then we popped Potty Power in the DVD player. At first, he acted as if it didn't interest him either, then I caught him sneaking peeks at the TV.

I could tell the songs were catching his attention, so I waited for a while, then played the DVD again. This time, when the other kids on the screen proudly displayed their potty chairs, he ran into the bathroom and hauled his new winnie the pooh potty chair out and yelled "This is MY potty chair!"

By the time the video was winding down, my son was trying to sing "I'm proud to wear my underwear" and marching back and forth just like the other kids on the video.

Later on that night, he discovered 2 diapers in his room and his sister helped him throw them away while he shouted "No more diapers for me!", making the same hand movements the girl on the video does. He's constantly singing the songs on the DVD all day long and he asks to watch Potty Power several times a day.

I do have to agree that this may not work for all age ranges, but my son just happened to love it. I also agree with another viewer that it can get on the nerves a bit, so put it on for them while you're doing something else. Personally, I can't stand the jester in the "Princess and the Potty" story, but hey, it worked, so I just bought it. :) This video worked perfectly and covered almost every obstacle mentioned in the book we used. My son did have a little trouble with going number two and was starting to hold it in, but we found the solution in the book: get his potty doll to have a poo accident and instruct the doll (My son named his doll "Bob" with the help of his sisters.) that he's not supposed to poop in his big boy underwear, poop goes in the toilet. That worked too. :) It's been a week since his potty party and my son hasn't had any accidents at all in the last 2 days. :D

5 out of 5 stars Worked like a "charm" on our Princess!.......2007-09-08

Our two year old daughter borrowed this from a friend who was recently potty trained. She had been going on the potty for quite some time, but never really made the connection about going on her own. Until she watched Potty Power five times in a row! After watching it she wanted to wear underwear and has not gone back to pull ups or diapers since! She especially loves the princess story at the end. This is why I have to buy our own copy! Even though it seems to be geared more towards girls, I would recomend this to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Worked for us!.......2007-09-08

My 3 year old daughter wasn't the least bit interested in being potty trained. She liked being a "baby" but, she hated the way diapers felt too! I was going crazy with her complaining about diapers yet not wanting to wear panties either. I bought Potty Power as a last resort and 2 weeks later she was potty trained. She's been in her big girl underwear for 2 months now and still enjoys watching this DVD.(She is watching it now)Bet it will work for you too!

4 out of 5 stars Good Job Good Potty Potty.......2007-09-06

We tried a lot of things to help my son learn to be potty trained, and this helped a lot. It is well done and keeps even younger childern's attention. It does not scare them into going(like their is a monster inthe potty that wants to eat your poopy, it makes it a positve experience.

2 out of 5 stars This DVD would not work if your child is still small.......2007-09-04

This DVD will only work if you child is at the age where he/she wants to be a big kid. Since my child is only 2 and still thinks that she is a baby, it didn't do anything to her. I would not recommend this if you want to train your child while he/she is still small.

The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly made and entertaining teen comedy that's more coherent than most. The depiction of parent-teen relations is fairly honest and particularly well-played by Richard Masur (Risky Business) and Carol Kane (In the Soup) as the parents. The DVD includes a very funny and rambunctious audio commentary track by the screenwriter and director, as well as interviews with the grown-up Coreys. A must-have for fans of '80s nostalgia. --Bret Fetzer

Came fast, good condition. Was good, haven't seen it since i was like 8 and you see a young Heather Gram. Which i never noticed before.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movie ever..STILL!.......2007-02-17

I watched this movie back in the 80's when I was a kid, and here it is 25 years later and this movie is still the funniest movie of all time. Surprisingly, I actually like most (I won't say all) of the movies the 2 Corey's did in the 80's, but I would say that "The Lost Boys" is my absolute favorite semi-horror flick, and "License to Drive" is my favorite comedy.

4 out of 5 stars Good DVD, absence of subtitles in Language English........2007-01-14

The participation of Corey Haim is spectacular. The story is cool (good entertainment). The absence of subtitles in Language English and in other languages is lamentable.

Wow there are so many parts of this movie i just simply did not remember. But still a great movie, especially with the deleted scenes. They are not up to scratch but i am not holding it against afterall the movie is 18 years old. But still allot of fun to watch.

    5 out of 5 stars These two Corey's, definitely 80's teen idols!.......2006-08-24

This movie is totally an 80's flick, but non the less it always brings back feelings of nestalgia! It brings back memories of being that 16yr old that can't wait to get their license. Both Corey Haim and Corey Feldman are perfect for the role. Even though Corey Haim's character fails the written exam, this teen somehow prevails and the outcome is hilarious! And even though this movie is almost 18yrs old, all teen agers can relate to it! This movie is timeless!!

Take Animal House, throw in a dose of television's Bosom Buddies and you get the Phoebe Cates/Matthew Modine sex farce Private School. The 1983 film was shot one year after Cates won fame in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (thanks primarily to her little red bikini), and two years before Modine won rave reviews for his work in Vision Quest. While neither star gives a stellar performance in Private School, both are appealing and likeable, even with the ridiculous premise. Chris (Cates) attends an all-girls private school, while horndog Jim (Modine) matriculates at the nearby all-boys school. In order to get close to her, Jim and his friend dress up like girls and befriend Chris and her hot posse. When Chris' sexy rival Jordan (Betsy Russell) tries to woo Jim away by riding a horse, Lady Godiva style, the stage is set for a catfight. Throw in a guest appearance by Sylvia Kristel of Emmanuelle fame and double entendres abound. The soundtrack is full of songs by '80s staples such as Rick Springfield, Vanity Six, and Bow Wow Wow, whose "I Want Candy" is played throughout a peeping shower scene. Though cheesy and intended for teenage boys, the film has an almost innocent charm compared to some of the current fare in theaters. --Jae-Ha Kim

    Description

Private School is where kids leave parents behind, and learn what growing up is really about. It's a romantic comedy from the same people who brought you the hilarious Private Lessons. Starring Phoebe Cates, with a special appearance by sensuous Sylvia Kristel as the sex education teacher whose classes are the best attended on campus. Chris Ramsay (Cates) and Jim Green (Matthew Modine) are experiencing the joys and pains of first love. She goes to the Cherryvale Academy-he attends nearby Freemount. When Chris gets a rival for Jim's affections, it sparks off a battle royale of zany pranks that turn both schools upside down with laughter. Private School features a soundtrack of hits from artists like the Stray Cats, Vanity Six, Bow-Wow-Wow and Rick Springfield.

    3 out of 5 stars Private School.......2007-08-06

This started out cheesy. Probably one of the lamest movies ive seen and not particularly in a 'good way'...though it had its moments. It seemed like one big excuse to see women naked and the acting was average at best. Its about some students at an all girls private school called Cherryvale Academy. Theres 2 girls that want the same guy whos also a student at a nearby Academy for Men. Also some kind of relationship between one of the girls and that guy. In between all this the guys start dressing up like women to get into the girls dorms to pull pranks on them. As the movie went on it got a little bit better and there were some genuinely funny scenes in it 'like the car scene' but nothing spectacular. I also liked some parts of it and was able to relate to some of the things that went on and laughed to myself. I guess you could call this a 'sex or romantic comedy'. I call it that but also just an excuse to see hot girls naked. 2.5- 3

    4 out of 5 stars Oh Betsy,Betsy,Betsy!!!.......2007-08-03

I saw this when it came out and it is typical of the 80s teen romance films of the era. Pheobe Cates was hot but Betsy Russel was every male teens dream. She was super hot and a bad girl. The shower scene was legend. Not a cinematic masterpiece,it is one of the great teen movies of the 80s. Oh Betsy,Betsy,Betsy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Betsy Russell, Super hot !.......2007-07-31

Sure, Phoebe Cates got top billing but this movie belongs to Betsy Russell as she shines in every single scene (and I think Phoebe used body double in her naked shot from behind scene). Betsy's topless scenes are still consider legendary today, too bad her acting career is too short.

The picture transfer is good, clean and sharp while the 2 channel mono is OK, I would have given it a full 5 stars but this DVD has nothing else to offer. Not even theatrical trailer and even worse not even chapter selection just an English subtitle. A commentary by the stars would have put this dvd on a different level. But in the meantime, enjoy Betsy Russel, what a sight.

4 out of 5 stars Private School DVD review.......2007-07-05

I'm glad this finally made it to DVD. After watching it in all of its cheesy glory, I must say, it's still good! Ok, ok, maybe it's just because Phoebe Cates is a goddess and Betsy Russell is so freakin hot. Russell randomly prances around flailing her exposed breasts around like it's nobody's business. In fact, just watching her top come off while horseback riding is completely off the wall, ridiculous, and awesome at the same time. Get this DVD if you like a bunch of random nudity. If you're into the typical 80s fare like Back to School, and Fast Times then you'll dig this movie. You can't be the type of person who cringes at cheesy, dated movies. If anything, get it for Phoebe Cates having sex on the beach.

3 out of 5 stars Brings back memories!.......2007-05-30

I received this DVD last night and ordered it because of Phoebe Cates, who I am still in love with! She is such a beautiful woman!

This movie is typical 80's fare, guys chasing women and trying to get some any way they can! That pretty much was a reflection of my own thinking at that time and loved these movies when they came out. Of course, throw in Phoebe Cates and potential skin shots, and I am there!

Realistically, its not that great of a movie, unless you love Phoebe! That's pretty much the only reason I bought this movie!

PS the sound is in MONO! I forgot that few movies were in stereo at that time!

Joan Collins defined the "Greed is Good" decade as Alexis Carrington on Dynasty, and became a pop culture icon in the process. This eye-opening boxed set recalls her formative years as a contract player for Fox studios. Movie superstardom eluded Motion Picture Magazine's Most Promising New Star of 1957, but these five films show her to mostly excellent advantage. Three are enormously entertaining, one is a guilty pleasure, and, in Stopover Tokyo (1957), a tepid Cold War drama costarring Robert Wagner, she seems to be channeling Elizabeth Taylor. The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955) offers Collins one of her juiciest roles as Evelyn Nesbit, the wide-eyed chorus girl at the center of the real-life crime of the turn of the century, the murder of her married lover, architect Stanford White (Ray Milland) by Nesbit's unstable husband, Henry K. Thaw (Farley Granger). Another sure bet is Seven Thieves, with Collins holding her own opposite Edward G. Robinson, Rod Steiger and Eli Wallach as a "mantrap" with a seductive role in the $4 million heist of a Monte Carlo casino. The suburban sex farce Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys (1958) is dated, but naughty good fun, with an intoxicating Collins as a bored housewife with designs on neglected husband Paul Newman. Sea Wife (1957) stars Richard Burton at his brooding best as a man desperately seeking to reunite with the woman with whom he was once shipwrecked on an island. Little does he know that she is a nun. Collins is a bit at sea herself in this film's more melodramatic moments, but there are tantalizing glimpses throughout this collection of the prime time diva to come, as in the The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing when a cooly contemptuous Nesbit finally stands up to Thaw's family, or in Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys, when she surprises Newman' in his hotel room, just as his own wife (Joanne Woodward) arrives unannounced at his door. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Fun films for rainy days.......2007-09-07

This is a great collection to have around the house. The acting is good and there is nothing like watching these early adventure movies. Also each dvd comes with its own collectors cards of scenes from its movie--pretty cool.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Collins (and Cinemascope) fans.......2007-08-30

This fantastic (and, it must be said, surprising) release is a must have for any fan of Joan Collins or any student of the Fox Cinemascope era.

Fox has given the films the "red velvet" treatment, and this is a lovely treat for fans. The interesting collection of films, especially the black and white caper "Seven Theieves" which I don't think has been released before, all look great. They are also beautifully presented with terrific artwork and lobby cards for each film.

It would have been great if "The Wayward Bus" or "Island in the Sun" were included, and it would also have been good if Collins herself had been involved in some of the commentaries or in the nice little featurette about her Fox career included on the disc of her breakout film "The Girl in The Red Velvet Swing", but these are small gripes. Snap up this great little collection today.

3 out of 5 stars JOAN COLLINS' SEMI-DECENT DVD DYNASTY .......2007-07-28

Long before she rocketing to Superstar status as a conniving and scheming villain of some sordid soap dynasty, Joan Collins dated Warren Beatty, married Anthony Newley and made scores of films, including a handful of semi-decent ones. Fox has decided to carefully select the best of the best, presenting them as a three- and four-star, five-disc DVD collection. The film showcase the sultry sex appeal for which Collins' has become famous, as well as her range as an actress who can handle comedy and drama. The set contains Sea Wife; Seven Thieves; Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys! and Stopover Tokyo; the winner is, of course, The Girl In The Red Velvet Swing. (The film received so much hype that JC landed on the cover of Life.) The 1955 saga, co-starring Ray Milland and Farley Granger, is based on fact: Collins plays gold-digging showgirl Evelyn Nesbit, who has designs on suave architect Stanford White. Despite White's marriage and their significant age difference, Nesbit and White become secret lovers. . until White decides it's best to break off the affair. Add to the mix coal and railroad baron Harry K. Thaw, who married Nesbit--then commits murder to assure he's the only man in her life. Soap opera saga at its Technicolor best . . . and the true crime of the century!

thank you twentieth century fox for the great job on your joan collins collection. super transfers with great extras: all with trailers, photo galleries, lobby card reproductions, information inserts etc. etc. fox is the current leader in the hollywood studios for their extras and attention to detail. warners has great prints but no extras: booklets, lobby cards etc. paramount doesn't even have trailers on most of their classic features.

joan is super to look at and shows an untapped range in this her fifties contract years. it would have been great to have had her give her recollections.only real mistake that i have seen is that seven thieves is listed as being in color and in fact is in black and white. i would love to see a second fox collection with the adventures of sadie, the virgin queen, the wayward bus, and easter and the king. how about collections of susan hayward and richard burton?

4 out of 5 stars keep 'em coming.......2007-04-26

How wonderful to see this collection of Fox CinemaScope films about to be released......lets hope they are in CinemaScope as it states a 1.33 Aspect Ratio. Many Fox releases in the past have stated this but when I purchased some they were in CinemaScope. Why can't the correct Aspect Ration be listed please.....It also states RESTORED from Video, maybe this means they are NOT CinemaScope as they would not have been on VHS. Looking forward to July. Keep 'em coming Fox.

5 out of 5 stars SOMBER, HAUNTING AND UNIQUE FILM WITH SPRINKLES OF DARK HUMOR.......2007-07-13

I first heard about MAY in a horror movie forum, then as luck would have it, It came on one night on IFC. After viewing, I had to have a copy of this movie!! This is a brilliant work and has so many layers to it. I'm not into over-analyzing or giving spoilers so I'll give a brief overview.
Movie starts off, We see a brief VERY disturbing sequence, then we see the character MAY as a child. We learn that MAY has a lazy eye(and has to wear an eyepatch), wich is NOT the problem with her, It's her mother. It's very suttle, but we learn that MAY'S mother is very uptight, over-protective, obsessive-compulsive, and over-bearing. Anyone who has grown up in a disfuctional home knows that it's hard, and these beginning scene capture this beautifully. At may's birthday party,(attended by only her mother and father) her mother gives her a doll but tells her she cannot take her out of the box(this is important). flash forward: MAY is a very pretty, but obviously isolated and quriky, young women working at a VET office and living alone, and her only companion is the doll her mother gave her on her birthday. After getting corrective lences, she meets a man and falls for him instantly, Then add in an overly flirty lesbian co-worker(played by ANNA FERRIS) who puts the moves on MAY. But when things don't work out, MAY starts to lose her grip on reality. "MAY" is a killer movie that builds up and has suspence and gore in the right places at the right time. Also, there are scenes that have a touch of "black humor" to them. The comical scenes work for the movie because they help you to get to know MAY. One of the better things about this movie is ANGELA BETTIS, she nails every scene and plays the character so well it seems like she is just that type of person!! The way the character is set up is: You meet her, You feel sorry for her, You fall for her cute quirkyness, And when she loses her grip on reality, You still feel empathy for her. It all leads up to A VERY DISTURBING AND SUDDEN ENDING!! OUTSTANDING ACTING BY BETTIS, GREAT STORY, GREAT DIALOGE, GREAT EDITING, and being the fan of "twist endings" GREAT ENDING. The only flaw is the music. There are very disturbing things going on in this movie and there is this emotive rock music in the background, I think it kind of throws the dark atmophere off. As far as the DVD goes, there are two comentaries, but it seems that they DID NOT take the comm. seriously. throughout the movie, instead of explaining the various layers of the film, they spend there time laughing and cracking jokes(what's the point of the commentary?). If you are a fan of CARRIE(oddly, BETTIS PLAYED "CARRIE" IN RE-MAKE) or like disturbing movies where you empathise with a well-defined character check out MAY!!!!

    2 out of 5 stars Teenage drivel.......2007-07-09

Why are teenagers so bored? Come to think of it so was I. Luckily I lived in Manhattan & went to lots of movies & museums.

This movie must be the result of growing up in the suburbs.

1 out of 5 stars Whats going on ?.......2007-07-03

Can't understand all the good reviews for this movie, thought it was terrible, watched it a few years ago and seen nearly ever horror/thriller out there and even my wife put it up there at the top of the list of the worst movies I have made her sit through.
Obviously I missed something with all the good reviews it has, I must have fallen asleep halfway through it.

5 out of 5 stars man, this movie is SEW good. get it? get it?.......2007-06-18

this movie has to be in my top 5 films of all time. i'ts much more creepy than one realizes, even while watching it. the scene where May pins a guy's hands to his head with a pair of scissors is not nearly as creepy as when may is amongst people trying her hardest to be accepted. director Lucky McKee, subsequent to this, his first film, has pigeon-holed himself as a horror filmmaker (not that i mind), but i hesitate to call this a horror movie. the first two-thirds of the film show us a cute, sympathetic young girl's forays into romance, and the intricacies of her character that repulse the people who have no interest in understanding them. once May has won our hearts, she is driven over the edge, and while some of the moodiness of the film is lost, we are still with may and empathizing with her plight while her tenuous grasp on reality slips away and she stitches together a franken-friend from her victims. in the last moments of the film, when may is completely withdrawn from the world around her, she finds contentment. the overall impression is of an extremely well-constructed character sketch framed in a highly stylized milieu that makes this film endearing and repulsive at the same time.

2 out of 5 stars Chilling story but dull movie.......2007-06-13

I bought this movie based on its exciting trailer. But I found the movie too slow untill everything happens at the end so fast. Its hard to belive that May can really kill five people so easily in one night and carry around their body parts in one lousy cooler. The movie makes its effort to keep things real in the begining and blows it badly at the end. The movie was definately a disappointment for me.

    Description

Based on elements from the stories of Mark Twain, this feature-length ClaymationÂ(r) fantasy follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher, and Huck Finn as they stowaway aboard the interplanetary balloon of Mark Twain. Twain, disgusted with the Human Race, is intent upon finding Halley's Comet and crashing into it, achieving his "destiny." It's up to Tom, Becky, and Huck to convince him hat his judgment is wrong, and that he still has much to offer humanity that might make a difference. Their efforts aren't just charitable; if they fail, they will share Twain's fate. Along the way, they use a magical time portal to get a detailed overview of the Twain philosophy, observing the "historical" events that inspired his works.

5 out of 5 stars Great Childhood Memory!.......2007-07-29

I am 30 years old and remember seeing this movie when I was 5 years old (to all you parents who are disturbed by some of the scenes - I turned out alright, even have my own company - I think children have a lot thicker skin than given credit) and loved it then, still love it now. I have yet to see an animated movie (cell, CGI, or clay) that comes close to the quality of this one. The expressions of the characters are amazing. Very entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars will vinton is da shiiiii-.......2007-05-17

if you dig claymation or loved will's noid/cali raisins/pee-wee dinos you need this!!! really trippy with a few parts which might actually scare youngsters so parents, watch it first!

5 out of 5 stars Unmatched Claymation Art, caricature done right.......2007-04-13

Aside from the plot, the film is a magnificant work in clay art.
Every aspect of it, smudged, shaped, sculpted clay... and this alone, makes this a masterpiece in my opinion. Every background, character and landscape element is clay and I sat amazed, thinking of the intensive work that goes into a feature length piece like this.. well, there simply IS nothing like this in claymation.
If you make caricatures, or need a resource to get your artistic juices flowing in sculpting miniatures, then this is simply IT.
The story is a good one also, but that has been much commented on I'm sure.. so, I keep my comments to defining it as simple excellence in art and design!

    Great for the entire family!

5 out of 5 stars Classic, artistic and all around stunning claymation work.......2007-04-03

I remember when I saw this as a kid and I instantly fell i in love with the artistic process of how Will Vinton created this film. Because of this film, I have always had a deep interest in the art. I recommend this, it's dark, entertaining and artistic. Stunning work.

4 out of 5 stars come take me away in your flying machine ..........2007-03-25

this is a great find. i thought i was renting the legendarily horrible 1940s biopic with fredric march, but instead i got this feature-length claymation film from will ("california raisins") vinton which takes tom sawyer, becky sharp, and huck finn on a cosmic ride via airship in search of the comet which host and tour guide mark twain expects to carry him off to eternity. rather than rely on the most familiar twain stories, this film delves into work like "mysterious stranger" and "diaries of adam & eve", and it works as a great introduction to the literary output of the most accessible of americas leading 19th century writers. it is NOT a kids movie -- unless your kids are sharp and incisive and inquisitive.

A doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin's demise, but the film is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is still a bittersweet experience. Culkin's performance is okay in that somewhat mannered way of his post-Home Alone career, but Anna Chlumsky is unusually sophisticated in her understanding of her character and situation. Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are perfectly stable as the kids' single parents. Directed by Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin). The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, Dolby sound, theatrical trailer, and optional French and Spanish soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best.......2007-06-06

I remember watching this movie when it came out and loving it. It's still one of my favorite films. Funny, touching, and wonderful era.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely powerful, with an effect that last decades.......2007-06-04

Whenever I think of this movie, I think of the death of the Thomas character and nothing else, but there's really much more to the movie than that. This could have been a very deep and moving film even if the whole bee-stinging incident was completely left out.

Okay, the movie starts out with a glimpse of the Sultenfuss family in their funeral home. And if I misspell any names they'll just have to remained misspelled, since I don't have the energy to look all this stuff up. Let me comment on something else, too. I watched this movie multiple times as a kid, and I still freaking forgot that the main character lived in a funeral home. That is a major, MAJOR part of the movie. How could I forget it? Amazing.

Well anyway, a woman shows up at the door of the funeral home asking for the make-up artist job. It seems that the owner of the home was smart enough to leave any reference to "deceased" out of the job description title in the newspaper. But the woman is a good sport and takes the job anyway, and since she lives in a motorhome she's there practially all the time, so she becomes like one of the family.

Well, while all this is going on, we follow the daughter of the funeral home owner, Veda, to see what a day in her life is like. It seems she constantly goes to a doctor and complains about how sick she is. We also find out she has a crush on her teacher, and because of him she's inspired to be a writer. So much that she takes a college level writing class over the summer. Pretty impressive for an [..], or however old she is.

She never hangs around with other girls, and spends all her time hanging around with her best friend Thomas instead. And although they do everything together, I still felt I didn't know very much at all about Thomas. I don't know if this was intentional on the part of the film makers or not. Honestly, it didn't seem that too much camera time was devoted to Thomas. The vast majority was spent on Veda and her dad. Her dad actually plays a big, big part of this movie. In fact, I would say that the development of his romantic relationship with the makeup lady and the effect it has on Veda is really the meat of the film. The sudden death of Thomas at the end and its particular effect is just the exclamation point to this long buildup.

Overall, this movie is a detailed account of an extraordinary character who already has a disposition to sadness and still is forced to face major issues at such a young age in life. I would say its even deeper than the Bridge to Terebithia book, which My Girl might have stemmed from. Honestly, as I watched this I found myself believing Veda wrote her own lines, because they're so much like what a child would say, especially in her wonderful description of Heaven.

I always used to think the title My Girl referred to her being Thomas's girl, then for a while I thought it referred to her being her dad's girl, and now I'm thinking that she's really the audience's girl. We as the audience are privileged to see all her dreams and secrets and fears that her writing teacher asks for but is only blessed enough to see after she confronts those fears at the very end of the movie.

Unless you can find a film that does a better job of addressing these issues, I would recommend My Girl as a must-see.

5 out of 5 stars THE BIGGEST NUMBER IN THE WORLD IS WHAT THIS FILM SHOULD GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-05

I LOVE MY GIRL!!!!This is my favorite movie of all time! And that won't ever change! I just saw it again[I KNOW I WATCHED IT ABOUT 20 TIMES!]and I started bawling[crying] at the scene when Vada is talking and crying over Thomas J.'s coffin during his funeral.I cry hard when I see that scene. This movie is very FUNNY! I wish there was a My Girl 3!!! Do NOT MISS THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Reviewer.......2007-03-22

Fantastic family film, excellent acting and strong plot. Humourous but also very real to life. The only element that may concern some parents is the girl reveals her panties getting into bed. But if a girl in her underwear does not concern you, this is a remarkably enjoyable family drama.

    5 out of 5 stars Recomended.......2007-03-09

This is a good family movie, with a great cast. It tells a good story, as it is narrated by the character. I love this movie and I recomend it to any movie lover.

5 out of 5 stars Irish music with delightful plot twists .......2007-01-15

I first saw this film at the Toronto Film Festival, and loved it. It's wry, whimsical, loving, funny, and full of hilarious plot twists, spun with spectacular Irish Caleigh music.

4 out of 5 stars Worst fake fiddle playing I've ever seen; other than that, a cute movie.......2006-07-06

This movie had a great plot, wonderful music, some hysterically funny moments and beautiful settings, but I just can't forgive the incredibly fake fiddling throughout the movie (hence the four stars instead of five). Andrea Corr does NOT play the fiddle in real life - her sister Sharon does - and one can definitely tell by watching her throughout the movie. Not only do her fingers stay completely still during every musical scene in which she is supposedly playing, but even her bowing wrist is stiff and never budges. Could sis Sharon not have coached her a little, or better still, why didn't they just cast Sharon? I spotted several other fake fiddlers throughout the movie - the best fiddlers were the children! Sorry to be such a whiner about it, but ANY Irish music aficionado can spot someone who's never picked up a fiddle in his or her life, and this movie seems to be filled with them. Are actors who can fiddle so difficult to find? For crying out loud, even Russell Crowe learned how to fiddle for his movie, Master and Commander or whatever that movie was. I was so disappointed because I'd hoped to see some kick-[...] fiddling while watching this movie. Really unfortunate.

As a fan of The Corrs I had to get this movie due to Andrea Corr being one of the actresses in it.
The movie was right fine, Had enough humor to get some good laughs. Had some mystery that was a good laugh near the end. And the ending was as sweet as Andrea's last smile.
This one is most fitting to watch with your lover snuggled up next to you.

    3 out of 5 stars A pleasant movie.......2006-03-15

Although some of the plotlines and jokes are predictable, the movie still entertains. Those who enjoy traditional Irish music, or movies such as "Waking Ned Devine", "Local Hero", "The Commitments" and "The Snapper" should give this movie a watch - although not quite as good as any of the above, it is certainly worth a viewing.

For those who play traditional Irish music, you will love the session "in-jokes" such as the visiting American band playing "Irish Washerwoman", one band-leader's admonition "...you're playing the accordion for starters!", and the scene of a session being over-run by a horde of novice bodhran players.

Speaking from the viewpoint of one who plays traditional music, the only irksome thing about the movie is that the lead woman (from the Corrs) FAILS TO MOVE HER FINGERS AT ALL as she pretends to play the fiddle. This is even more strange, considering that she actually CAN play the fiddle quite well in real life. How did that one get by the director?

5 out of 5 stars Another good Irish movie.......2006-02-24

If you liked Waking Ned Devine you should like this movie. It deals with an Irish band competition that pits brothers against each other. The lead singer with The Coors plays the female lead and is very good. Good entertainment.

Riding in Cars with Boys achieves broad appeal as a tearjerker laced with hardscrabble humor. In the crowd-pleasing hands of director Penny Marshall, Beverly Donofrio's bestselling memoir loses much of its real-life gravity, but its rich humanity remains in abundance, especially since Drew Barrymore plays Donofrio with effortless charm. The movie spans 20 years, from Bev's pregnancy at 15 in 1963 (actually 17 in the book), through welfare parenthood with a heroin-addicted husband (Steve Zahn), and semi-adult resentment as her teenaged son (Adam Garcia) takes priority over her ultimate goal of finishing college and publishing her memoir. For all of Barrymore's winning tenacity, it's Zahn's goodhearted loser who gives the film its genuine soul while lending an edge to Marshall's cloying sentiment. The material begs for the subtler touch of James L. Brooks (who produced this and Marshall's more delicate hit Big), but that won't stop this movie from attracting a legion of admirers. --Jeff Shannon

    3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-06-16

I didn't plan on watching this, but it turned out to be one of those slow evenings and quite frankly there was nothing else on. To my surprise I found myself drawn into the story. Mainly because our heroine, Bev, was certainly a flawed character and was unable to see her contribution to the direction her life took. Though I was a little confused in the begining to how old she was. Not until it was revealed that she was riding with her son and not a boyfriend did the clouds finally part-though it was pretty laughable given Drew Barrymore didn't even look twenty-five herself next to her "son". However, for the most part, this film was interesting but I'm unclear the point of this journey. When Bev gives the speech about how her son saved her, I'm not sure I believed her or believed that she believed it. When did this revealation occur to her? And when she whines to her father in the car, it's clear to me that even then she doesn't believe that she screwed up her son's life. But overall, it's a descent story-especially if there's nothing else on.

My wife and I find the storyline to be realistic. The characters portrayed people who were believable in spite of their dysfunctions.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Account of a Young Mother's Life.......2006-08-30

This is the heart-warming, tear-jerking, yet still comical tale of a young girl named Beverly growing up during the 1950s; a time when sexual promiscuity was forbidden and, should an "accident" occur, the young couple wed right away.

And that is what happens when Beverly meets Ray. Forced to put aside her dreams of college and becoming a writer, Beverly and Ray wed and then along comes Jason, their son. Beverly finds herself still holding on to her dreams while trying to tame Ray into fatherhood and raise her baby boy. Needless to say, the marriage does last but your children are always your children; thus the story focuses on Beverly and Jason.

Anyone who has had a child at a young age, wed or unwed, can relate to this tale of lost dreams and life's struggles told from Jason's point of view. Essentially, it is the tale of how young mothers and their offspring grow-up together; how they depend on and learn from one another.

To me, the most touching part of this movie came with the confrontation between Beverly and grown-up Jason soon after Jason sees his father, Ray, after many years of absence from his life. I won't spoil it telling what occurs, but it is the most truthful yet touching part of the movie.

Definitely a chick flick. Guys won't get it under any circumstance. Ladies, save it for a night that you need to laugh through tears.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Acted!!!.......2006-04-21

I really enjoy this film because despite that is sad its also very funny. This is a movie about the outside world, about what its really like to be a mother at young age. I recommend it especially to young teenagers that think being a mother would be EASY. When in reality its not!!

Nothing but a lame excuse to show the overrated Barrymore's face on the screen again.

3 out of 5 stars A cult slasher movie with some originality .......2007-09-14

As you probably know, Sleepaway Camp has gained a cult status among horror fans like myself. Yes, technically this movie is considered a "slasher" film I suppose. But this movie definitely puts its known spin on the genre. For example, there is no gratitutious blood, gore, or sex in this movie. The kill scenes are more creative than most other slasher movies, and there is very little actual on-screen violence. And of course, the ending sequence is what people remember about the film. And even though I do feel the ending is a bit disturbing, I feel its kinda over-hyped as being one of the most shocking endings ever. After all, the whole film is filled with foreshadowing of something like this happening!!! Though by no means is this movie a masterpiece, you have to take it for what its worth, which is pretty good to be a low-budget, B-horror film. Surprisingly, the acting isn't as bad as you may think, except that of the Aunt Martha character, which is quite cheesy. The story is fairly creative, and again, the ending is a bit shocking. If you're a die hard horror, then there a certain amount of respect that you must give to this film, just because its not just a carbon-copy of every slasher movie being made at the time. It brings something new to the table and for that, it deserves to be a cult classic.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of twists and shocks.......2007-09-12

Sleepaway Camp was a good movie, just dont expect Friday the 13th. Its a good story and the killings are not really seen. This movie has alot of shocks, espeically at the end. I enjoyed this movie but I wouldnt put it as a favorite horror movie of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Meet me at the waterfront after the social!.......2007-08-13

Sleepaway camp defies genre. It's kind of disguised as a horror film when in reality it's kind of like this twisted love story. As it involves a summer camp, we immediately are misled to believe we are getting ready to watch a wannabe Friday 13th. A series of murders are being committed in the camp and it becomes something of a whodunit. In perhaps the strangest, twisted, and unexpected ending in film history, the murder is revealed.

More of a no budget movie then a low budget movie, this film is just a lot of fun. A great film for a group to watch as it doesn't require a lot of attention and it is sure to spark some fun conversation. The surprise ending is all the better when you realize the whole movie has been hinting at what it is. If you're expecting gore and real horror you may be let down, however, the creative killing methods use by the murderer should keep you entertained.

    3 out of 5 stars Sleepaway Camp.......2007-05-14

Plot - "After a horrible boating accident kills her family, Angela, a shy and sullen young girl, moves in with her eccentric aunt Martha, alongside her protective cousin Ricky. One summer, Martha sends the kids to Camp Arawak. Soon after their arrival, a series of bizarre and increasingly violent accidents begins to claim the lives of various campers. Who is the twisted individual behind these murders? The disclosure of the murderer's identity is the most shocking climax in the history of American cinema." - [...]

My thoughts - The film was enjoyable in that the build up to the climax was affective. The acting is bad, but in a cheesy horror movie way. I've always viewed horror films with the idea that the acting is going to be decent at best, so no problems there. The murder scenes are set up to let you in on the fact that the person doing the killing is a familiar face. This move is affective in that you immediately dismiss the notion that it might be some brutal looking madman and quickly realize that it's one of the teen campers. Your mind begins to lock into the traditional who-done-it mode of thinking, which makes the end even more surprising. The Director (Robert Hiltzik)set's up the murders and the scene's directly follwing the murder's in a way that eliminates certain characters as the possible killer. What's left are two (at most) possible killers, and judging by the plot line ONE option seems to be the obvious choice, again aiding the shock that ensues at the end. The shock lies in the climax of the film. The final 2 minutes (approx.) of this movie are crazy, it's like two different films as far as the approach and creepy aspect. The mood is eerie, film stock looks different and the end result is downright spooky and shocking.

4 out of 5 stars I'll Never Forget The Ending.......2007-02-15

It's been many, many years since I last saw this movie, but I remember it very well. I was real young when I first watched it, but I have seen it several times since but it has been several years since I last saw it.

It is one of those movies that shocks you so badly that you never forget its ending. NEVER!!!
