3 out of 5 stars Not the best acting, BUT..........2007-02-12

...the scenes with Kate Capshaw and Elle Macpherson are SIZZLING!! Stockard Channing is always wonderful, and has obviously waited it out to "come of age" and into the roles of her career. Cameryn Manheim and and a few of the other actresses were really fun to see outside of the familiar roles we are used to. I'd recommend "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her" if you like this "vignette" format...it's a little better.

3 out of 5 stars VERY TALENTED GROUP OF WOMEN.......2005-12-03

SOME OF THE CHARACTERS WERE JUST NOT ALIVE BUT KATE KAPSHAW WAS CONVINCING AS THE BI-SEXUAL LOVER OF ELLE MACPHEARSON.IT WAS GOOD TO SEE KATE AGAIN I THINK SHE'S UNDERRATED IT'S JUST TOUGH WHEN YOU'RE MRS.STEVEN SPIELBERG TO BE ANYTHING BUT MRS.SPIELBERG.I HAVE TO AGREE THAT THE LOVE SCENE PROBABLY WAS WRITTEN BY STRAIGHT MEN AND NOT LESBIAN WOMEN JONIE MITCHELL'S SONG WAS GREAT FOR THE LOVE SCENE, BUT I MUST ADMIT IT WAS THE SONG PLAYING IN THE CLUB THEY DANCED TO THAT MADE THIS MOVIE WORTH SEEING IT WAS A VERY GOOD SONG ONE OF CHAKA KHANS BEST SONGS, I PURCHASED THAT CD THE SONG IS CALLED STRONGER THAN BEFORE IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED.I KNOW ELLE TOOK IT ON THE CHIN ALOT FOR HER ACTING SHE WAS CLUMSY AT TIMES WITH HER LINES AND I LITTLE TO LETHARGIC BUT SHE'LL PROBALY IMPROVE WITH WORK, AND BOO-HOO WHEN U LOOK LIKE THAT WHO REALLY CARES ANYWAY, I THINK SHE WILL IMPROVE OVER TIME MOST MODELS HAVE.SHE JUST SEEMED LIKE SHE WASN'T PLAYING A CHARACTER,EVEN THOUGH HER ISSUES AND HER FEELINGS WERE REALISTIC FOR HER SITUATION. IT SEEMED LIKE SHE WAS ELLE MACPHEARSON NOT BEING COMFORTABLE WITH KATE CAPSHAW.THE THREE SISTERS WAS OK THE THING ABOUT IT IS IF YOU'RE NOT A DISFUNCTIONAL FAMILY OR KNOW OF ANY THEN IT REALLY SEEMS OVER THE TOP, THE THIRD STORY I THINK WAS THE WEAKEST STORY, I MEAN MIA FARROW LOVE HER, LINDA HAMILTON VERY CAPABLE AND LYNN WHITFIELD OFTEN UNDERRATED GAVE THEIR ALL,BUT IT REALLY DIDN'T HAVE A STRONG EFFECT WITH THE AUDIENCE, AND THE LAST STORY WITH CAMRYN MANHEIM DID DRAG A BIT AND I EXPECTED A BETTER BANG FOR THE ENDING,BUT STOCKARD CHANNING AS ALWAYS IMPRESSED ME EVEN THOUGH U KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HER.IT WAS HARD CONNECTING WITH THE CHARACTERS THEY WERE A LITTLE UNDER WRITTEN WITH STRONGER WRITING YOU ROOT FOR THEM AND YOU CARE ABOUT THEM, WOMENS RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE VERY COMPLEX AND WOMEN HAVE GOOD STORIES TO TELL HOPEFULLY WE'LL SEE MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE STORIES ABOUT WOMEN ARE NOT VALUED OR PRODUCED AND THEY SHOULD BE.KUDOS FOR THE EFFORT.

3 out of 5 stars A Girl Thing review.......2005-08-09

I like A GirlThing. It has four mini storys about love and life and family. Don't worry each story is about 50 minutes, so you get real complete storys. I always feel a movie is good as long as it has a good story line and gives it enough time to tell the story. It's worth wathing.

1 out of 5 stars A Girl thing.......2005-07-07

If you love well written stories, great plots and captivating acting then this movie IS NOT for you.

I don't know how the producer managed to swindle precious investor dollars to get this tripe made into a movie, however there it is!

It was SO BORING and so badly done that after the first 1 hour and 45 minutes I had to turn it off. I don't even want to know how it ended.

The cast line up was great! That's the only 'positive' comment I can make with regards to this movie.

DO NOT watch it. DO NOT hire it. DO NOT believe anybody who thinks it is good.

The two lesbians who made love even did that scene poorly; get this, it was done in the missionary position!

Avoid this movie!

1 out of 5 stars A Girl Thing gone terribly wrong.......2004-09-16

When a friend and I read the back of the DVD at Blockbuster, we were intrigued by the plot, not to mention the incredible cast. We checked it out with anticipation of a great flick. I wouldnt even consider what we were feeling as dissapointment; I would describe what we felt as pure regret! The acting on the part of Elle McPherson was awful! The character development in this movie was null and void. I dont understand how other reviewers can say that this was a fabulous movie depicting real life situations about women...I dont know about you but I dont have internal conflict with everyday lesbian experiences, my mother never tricked me in to thinking I was adopted so that I'd get along with my siblings. I dont know what happened in the other two 'chapters' because we turned this atrocity of a movie off after 2 hours of pure hell. If you want to make a movie about womens issues, make a movie about our rights, our health issues, being a mother, etc. This was just a poorly written script with a good cast who couldnt even save it from the depths of the hideousness that is called A Girl Thing!

Controversial director Neil LaBute tweaks our culture's moral compass in his dark comedy The Shape of Things. Dorky museum guard Adam (indie heartthrob Paul Rudd, made to look as dweebish as possible) meets student Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) as she's preparing to deface a classical statue; instead of stopping her, he musters up the courage to ask her out. But soon he finds himself so completely in her thrall that he willingly succumbs to her every want--and she wants him to change his hair, his clothes, his face, even his friends (Frederick Weller and Gretchen Mol). In In the Company of Men, LaBute presented two men cruelly experimenting with a deaf woman's affections; The Shape of Things proposes that women can be just as monstrous. Though LaBute could stand to delve more deeply, this well-acted and cunningly written film will provoke conversation afterwards--and not many movies nowadays can do that. --Bret Fetzer

..on amazon are overweighted in the positive direction. Always subtract at least one star to allow for the over representation of film students who generally seem to rate pretentious schlock very highly.

SoT gives an excellent depiction of a psychopathic woman who uses her position as a graduate art student to destroy an unsuspecting fairly decent guy. Whether that was the intention of the filmmaker I can't say. I wasn't interested enough to watch it again with the commentary track.

However the movie has one big inherent flaw.... it doesn't end. It cops out and leaves the viewer with the plot unresolved. So it is a play in two acts and as Shakespeare so amply showed us a good play is in three acts.

Maybe the director couldn't come up with an ending and so left it this way hoping that the viewers would do like so many viewers do and make excuses for his incompetence for him. I don't blame him. It works pretty well. Look how many people here he fooled.

4 out of 5 stars thought provoking.......2007-06-24

I knew nothing of this movie and didn't expect to like it, but I found it interesting. Once I became interested in the unusual pairing of Rachel Weisz and Paul Rudd, I had to watch the whole thing through.
There's a very sinister suprise ending that made me say...HOW COULD SHE DO THAT? Check it out, it's not too bad!

5 out of 5 stars Labute at his best.......2007-05-28

Deception. Hate. Cheating. Heartbreak. For some, these are aspects of life and relationships best not explored in films. For all others, there is Neil LaBute, a writer/director who's fearless when it comes to exploring the darker side of human nature. LaBute exploded onto the scene in 1997 with the controversial "In The Company Of Men," a film about two young men who play a devastatingly cruel trick on a deaf female coworker. Subsequent efforts such as "Your Friends And Neighbors" and "Nurse Betty" showed LaBute continuing to push the envelope while enlisting A-list actors such as Morgan Freeman, Renee Zellweger and Ben Stiller.

"The Shape Of Things" shows LaBute at the top of his game. Paul Rudd plays Adam, a shy, nerdy college student who works part-time at a local museum. While working one day he meets Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), an attractive graduate art student who surprisingly takes a liking to Adam. The two begin seeing each other, later embarking on an ill-fated double date with Adam's former roommate Philip (Fred Weller), a cocky jock who delights in mocking Adam; and Jenny (Gretchen Mol), a fellow student who the gregarious Philip "stole" from Adam.

Before long, Adam has fallen hard for Evelyn, who fulfills his every sexual desire and slowly begins transforming his physical appearance. She changes his hair, gets him to lose weight via a new running regiment, overhauls his wardrobe and more. As Adam's physical transformation progresses, he changes emotionally as well, gaining a newfound sense of confidence. His new demeanor catches the attention of Jenny, and flirtation ensues. From there the games of deception begin, and it all builds to a brutal climax in which more than one character experiences the ultimate in humiliation.

It sounds like the potential stuff of soap opera. But LaBute is the rare filmmaker who strikes a raw nerve with his words and cinematic style, and he uses the setup to make one stingingly perceptive observation after another about art, humanity, and relationships. The film, adopted from LaBute's play (which starred the same actors) sometimes feels stagy, but with dialogue this sharp, who's complaining?

Each actor is standout. Weisz, the most well known of the crew, is surprisingly good, even delivering lengthy monologues about the nature of art with ease, and looking stunning every minute. Rudd, who had a long-running role on "Friends," makes the transformation from nebbish nerd to sharp-dressed stud with impressive ease. Weller also makes a strong impression as the classic slimy-male LaBute character. The solid Mol, another future star, rounds out the impressive cast. My only complaint: Where's LaBute regular Aaron Eckhart, one of the best actors in the biz?

Stellar acting aside, the movie belongs to LaBute, who with each of his films continues to show that's he one of the most unique voices in American cinema. It may not be perfect, but it's still exciting to watch LaBute climb out on a limb and take chances. This is a film, like LaBute's incendiary debut "In The Company Of Men," that's guaranteed to divide audiences and promote debate. Where else can you see a film where the lead actress flips off the audience during a pivotal scene? Whether you're flipping her the bird right back or cheering her on, "The Shape Of Things" is one film you don't want to miss.

3 out of 5 stars She loves me (not).......2007-01-02

Paul Rudd plays a man who has nothing whatsoever that makes him distinguishable from anyone else. One day he meets a graduate art student at the gallery where he works and asks her out. She accepts which is a surprise to him since he's slightly overweight, wears glasses, has never had much success with ladies, and she is--in a word--stunning.

Soon into their relationship things about Rudd's character start to change. He begins working out, dressing better, and starts to consider cosmetic surgery. In direct proportion to how much time he spends with his artistic, creative, and beautiful girlfriend he starts to see more of these qualities in himself. In fact, so much so that he's willing to sacrifice his friendships to become closer to her. Then comes the day that her final art project is revealed and Rudd begins to question the validity of their entire relationship.

This was one of those films that makes you not want to be around people because you can't help but think that everyone might be as unfeeling and uncaring as some of the characters in this film. To put someone else's feelings and wellbeing in jeopardy for the sake of one's own art is incomprehensible to me... and fascinating to watch. The Shape of Things is one of those films that makes you think about things and is therefore, in my opinion, worthwhile. Like Voltaire once said, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." I hate the message that this film presents. I hate the bleak picture it paints for the state of people's emotions and the way that people can overlook the bounds of common courtesy for their own selfish ends. But that being said, I understand that it happens every day, and this film does a great job of portraying the banality of human thoughtlessness.

I think it's also important to watch the introduction to the film by director Neil LaBute that's included as one of the DVD extras. In it, he talks about the difficulties of bringing this story, which was originally written as a stage play, to the theatre and how it affected the casts' performances.

4 out of 5 stars Time To Shape Up.......2006-11-02

There's a point in Neil LaBute's razor sharp satire, The Shape Of Things, where the protagonists, Adam and Evelyn, are discussing a show they've just seen. Their graphic description sounds suspiciously like Karen Finley, whose zany antics helped galvanize the extreme right wing against all things liberal and artistic. I saw Finley perform and will freely concede that watching her pour chocolate sauce on her naked body was amusing, diverting, and tested the perimeter of what may seriously be called art. Finley's position was that she herself was her own artistic statement. Evelyn, played brilliantly by Rachel Weisz, takes this concept one step further.

Although it reads like a play adapted for film, it is, The Shape Of Things is really more like a slow burning horror movie that builds to an unbearable climax. It's urbane and clever, a yuppified Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf in its sensibility. Plenty of fun references for all the liberal arts major out there. But beneath all this smart banter is a basic assumption laying the groundwork for cruelty to come. That is, when we fall in love, we fall in love with the person who we will have shaped out of the person who is before us now. We don't even see the actual person in front of us; we see what that person might become.

In this regard, The Shape Of Things is a "high concept" film, because it addresses a clearly defined philosophical problem. But the great irony here is that almost all of us are ultimately disappointed because efforts to change the objects of our affection are doomed to failure; people simply don't change unless they must. Thus, the day comes for us when we look across the breakfast table and see the actual person, at last, and most often, that individual is not from royal lineage. We say goodbye to the imaginary person we thought we could shape, and feel a sense of loss.

The dynamic between Adam and Evelyn poses the opposite question - what if you succeeded in shaping a person to your will? What then? What would you have gained? What would be the consequences of such an act, especially the unintended consequences? It's a fascinating question with many layers of complexity, and LaBute is to be congratulated for raising it in his compact, disciplined film. All four players come through admirably, Weisz is amazing, and Paul Rudd delivers the goods in a deceptively understated way. Evelyn's sketchy motives for remaking Adam are clearly the lynch pin of The Shape Of Things, but all the human interactions in this film will get you thinking and keep you thinking. Recommended.

In most of erotic movies I use the fast forward between the sex parts. but in this movie they did it I have to fast forward through the sex parts. so the sex parts are too slow not well cast. the best thing is the cover of the DVD.

3 out of 5 stars I got this one because of the cover photo..........2006-07-13

I'm a sucker for two beautiful girls doing bad things together, and that cover photo promised at least one hot lesbian encounter on this video. And, in actuality, there were TWO girl/girl scenes. Sadly, neither one of them was particularly good.

The two girls on the box cover are at a sex club of sorts. Their scene together was the weaker of the two. Basically, this other girl is invited to the sex club, and once she arrives this guy tells her to check out the oriental girl and her blonde friend, who then put on a "show" together. It was more mechanical than it was erotic.

Later, the girl goes home and tells her girlfriend about it. Then they both start making out. Their scene was better, but still not all that great.

The video also includes a couple of scenes involving girls with GUYS, but I fast-searched through both of them so I really can't comment on either.

2 out of 5 stars Does This Violate The Geneva Convention?.......2006-10-16

I think that coerced viewing of these films could be in violation of the Geneva Convention. Let it be known that these films are worth only one star, but I awarded a bonus star for Rollergator's initial entrance. This will test your will like nothing else I have ever seen. It makes Ed Wood look like a master of the genre; it makes William Shatner seem positively sedate. Good luck.

I bought the set for "Rollergator." I had no idea what it was about, but the title was appealing to a bad movie fan. I originally thought it might have had the lowest production values of any film in history. (My mind was changed later that day.) The film does not star a roller skating alligator, but rather an eleven year old ("I'm not a baby! I'm almost twelve!") talking, purple alligator who rides in a backpack of a girl who roller skates.

Joe Estevez stars as the evil carnival owner "Uncle Chi Chi," who wants to exploit "Baby Gator" for profit. This is a very talented alligator: not only does he talk, he raps: "There was a little gator, who was a mean roller skater...," and, "I like to rhyme, and I like the slime...." He also does celebrity impersonations. Be sure not to miss Baby Gator's impressions of Ricky Ricardo and Elvis, in particular.

Along the way a variety of characters are introduced to muddy the plot. There is a middle age soccer mom ninja with a backpack full of celery and cabbage, Chi Chi's nephew who wants to take over the hot dog concessions at the carnival, and last but not least, Ed Wood veteran Conrad Brooks ("Glen or Glenda") as the "Swamp Farmer," Baby Gator's mentor. Gator wants to get back to the Swamp Farmer, but before that can happen, three other events have to occur: a pointless pram theft is followed by the slowest chase (on skateboards) ever filmed, and the absolute worst ninja battle ever. The swordplay and slingshot use is not to be missed. I would love to know Conrad's take on this film: I will bet you that he thinks "Plan 9" is better, too.

The only thing going for "Rollergator" is the music: it features nonstop guitar noodling during the entire film. The music's awful, but at least it drowns out the dialogue.

"Things" is almost unwatchable. It is a contrivance where two short horror vignettes are combined with the most pointless wraparound video I have ever seen. This movie does not entertain in any way. If you insist on watching it, expect to see a monster appearing to be a cross of "Alien" and "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo." It is kept in a box by a diabolical man and is trained to attack anyone not wearing a hat. The phrase "The man with the hat owns the box" is of huge significance in this unsuspenseful and unscary piece of excrement. The second vignette is actually worse, and is all about unscheduled eyeballectomy via X-acto knife and a haunted clown cookie jar. Please note especially the horrendous special effects in which frying eggs morph into eyes.

"Toad Warrior" was another reason I bought the set. How could a grade-Z cinemaphile not love that title? This film appears to have been made later the same afternoon that "Rollergator" was shot. It once again stars Joe Estevez, this time as a mob boss, and Scott Shaw as "Max," who looks like Gregg Allman after a bender. Conrad Brooks and Rollergator make a special guest appearance. The film is about Dr. Trixie T and her toad serum which can turn people into toads and vice versa. The toads in question have the worst costumes I have ever seen anywhere, period. The toads wearing shorts and jeans running after ultralight planes will haunt me for a while. The plot makes no sense. None. I will just tell you that it involves Joe Estevez versus "Humphrey Bullfrog" trying to obtain the serum from Dr. Trixie T, ninjas, kamikaze pilots, a frog bar in which a toad girl croons "My Kind of Frog" with the worst guitar accompaniment ever, a talking crocodile alarm clock, and the worst acting and dialogue imaginable. After watching this, I have decided that this has even lower production values than "Rollergator" (but barely.)

There is a guy called "Overlord War Toad" who does the worst impression of Brando brooding in "Apocalypse Now" ever. He blathers on and on about war and killing. He rubs a crystal a lot, and talks about when he was in Frognam. Max, a mercenary, is his enemy, and has his way with the ladies (notably an agent named "Spangle.") He is also Dr. Trixie T's ex-boyfriend, and the flashbacks are just painful. Max has to take a group of agents (the Bangles, judging by their appearance) into the desert, and gets to say lines like "Ride well, Cycle Toad." There are several scenes repeated throughout the film for padding, oh, I mean, dramatic effect, and it finally concludes with a big fight and chase around an abandoned highway overpass (where, incidentally, four characters play catch with a satchel during the credits.) There is threatening dialogue abounding ("I'm hungry for frog legs!") and a surreal sequence where Dr. Trixie T lectures Joe Estevez about DNA (I'll boil it down to the biological maxim "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny," though it's irrelevant to the plot anyhow) and teaches him the "Hokey Pokey" in one sitting. You will not believe this scene.

I can't tell you not to watch "Toad Warrior," but prepare to be tormented. A lot.

"Big Sister 2000" is an unwatchable wannabe psychological thriller combined with a women's prison film. It fails on all levels, from the "plotline" about anarchists versus the oppressive government, to the Clintonian cigar imagery. Just say no.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money!.......2006-08-30

I do not remember what prompted me to buy that dreadful DVD, but I am regretful I made that expenditure. There was not much of a plot. The DVD was based on a purple talking aligator. I kept fast-forwarding to possibly see something that held my interest, but there is absolutely nothing to recommend. I rate this terrible-terrible DVD a negative 1,000.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good deal.......2007-09-07

I bought this awhile back when a certain retail store(let's call them 'ircuit ity') had this double feature on a special sale for $6! I bought it mainly for The Sure Thing, but Valley Girl isn't bad either. For me to go into the plotlines, "opposites attract" themes, or point out the 80's vibe of both films would be insulting to those reading this. Besides, the reviews for the individual films are plentiful and more helpful than what i could possibly write.

I'll just comment on the dvd itself. Each film is on a separate 2-sided disc. Widescreen versions for both, though fullscreen options are available(side two of Valley Girl for sure, can't remember if fullscreen is included for The Sure Thing as i'm a widescreen-person all the way). Each film has a commentary track by its director(Reiner and Coolidge respectively) and an in-movie text commentary of sorts by way of pop-ups as bonus features. This is the 'trivia track' extra listed on the back(honestly, i thought this would be a trivia game about the 80's or about the movies). Also, it doesn't list it on the back of the box, but The Sure Thing has a fairly extensive making of featurettes on side two(including participation by most of the main talent in the original film). Not sure why this is not emphasized on the back as an extra as well, as it would've been a selling point to me along time ago. I'm just glad it was included, a nice bonus surprise nonetheless. Also, there's a few mini-extras all featuring the Sure Thing herself.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the word Unrated !.......2007-09-04

When it said Unrated, it's NOT the same with Uncut version. Unrated just means it is not rated. The NC-17 version is often the Best one if you look for some Extra details...NC (Non-censured)
Look for NC edition, it means it won't allow individuals under 18 years old (adults).
Or why don't just rent the ex-rated one?
