Carl Reiner (Where's Poppa?) brought comic Steve Martin to the screen in this mostly funny 1979 movie about a relentlessly stupid but innocent man, whom we get to know from childhood (where it never occurred to him that he was white as he was raised by a family of black sharecroppers) to romance (where he doesn't quite know what to do with Bernadette Peters). Martin is game as the moron, and this is the kind of film with funny moments people still talk about. --Tom Keogh

Steve Martin's funniest three films, The Jerk, The Lonely Guy, and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, are collected in the Wild and Crazy Comedy Collection with some corny bonus material that pales in comparison to Martin's stunning comedic performances. In The Lonely Guy, Martin's dejected character wanders New York streets with his fern plant searching for a lady to love. Scenes in which Martin calls his lady from his rooftop amidst scores of other lonely guys, or jogs into a diner wearing fake, spray-on sweat, seem more slapstick with each viewing. Martin's masterpiece is The Jerk, about Navin Johnson, a white guy born a "poor black child," who sets out for the city to become somebody. Navin, with hobo rucksack in tow, takes his dad's three rules--Don't trust whitey, Lord loves a workin' man, and See a doctor and get rid of it--to an extreme, after becoming a millionaire from inventing a reading glasses apparatus. Co-starring Bernadette Peters, The Jerk's bizarre humor still feels fresh in its satirical examination of race and class. Watching Navin change from a poor black child, to a gas station attendant, to a millionaire, to a drunken egomaniac, to a homeless bum, illustrates Martin's sheer talent for character sketching. If this Wild and Crazy Comedy Collection is a cake, The Jerk is definitely the icing. --Trinie Dalton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars spirited - mixed with tension.......2005-12-10

I'll start with the basics. The production quality of this DVD is very good. The audio is well done; the singer can be understood. The music is well mixed. The filming allows the viewer to watch the performance without any editing distractions.

Now, I'll focus on the performance itself. The Circle Jerks put on one hell of a show. There's a palpable tension between the audience and the singer. A couple times, I was expecting a
fight.

The set is rammed through at a blistering pace. At forty, did I feel old and ridiculous watching this performance? Sure, I'd be torn up in the audience, left for a lump of lard. But, then again, the guys playing the music are as old as I am, if not a little older. Do the lyrics and politics jive with my old pathetic self? No. But they sure brought back memories of days gone by, when I didn't have a mortgage, children, and could be pissed off while just wanting some "skank."

4 out of 5 stars Interesting rarities.......2007-08-28

The first feature on this disc is the rarely-seen 1946 film 'Swing Parade,' which would be pretty unmemorable and even less-known were it not for the Stooges. Unlike most of the other full-length features they guest-starred in, here they actually play substantial secondary roles and contribute more than usual to the plot, instead of just periodically popping up as comic relief. The plot itself is rather thin and trite; Carol Lawrence, an aspiring singer, has just gotten evicted from her apartment, and while applying for a job as a receptionist with Danny Warren, Sr., is instead hired to serve Danny, Jr. an eviction notice. The elder Warren hates how his son is running a nightclub, the Embassy, and is determined to shut the club down. (Oddly, for supposedly being on the verge of bankruptcy, this club still manages to have a lot of lavish costumes and sets during its musical performances.) Typically, Danny and Carol end up falling for one another, Carol gets hired as a singer at the club, and she abandons her plans to serve him the eviction notice. In spite of this development, though, Danny, his manager Moose, and the Stooges (who work as waiters and with the stage crew) still have to be on the lookout for other process-servers, making sure none of them come anywhere near Danny. Danny, Sr. ends up having a change of heart, and when Moose and the Stooges mistake him for yet another process-server and the truth about why Carol originally came to the club come out, it comes down to Danny's former would-be girlfriend Marie to try to save the day. The film is also cluttered up by a bunch of musical performances from then-popular acts such as Connee Boswell and the big-band jazz leader Louis Jordan. The jazz numbers are pretty good, but the other songs are rather boring and don't add anything to the plot. A couple of the routines in this film are adapted from ones they did in earlier films, such as 'Beer and Pretzels.' For being from a studio that was even more poverty-row than Columbia, it's not too shabby and is enjoyable enough, even though it's nowhere near being a great classic or even a really good movie period. It's also great to see how Curly looks and acts much more like his old self here, despite being rather far into his sick period. He seems a lot healthier than he did in the Columbia shorts being made at the same time, perhaps because this was shot over a longer period of time and he didn't need to be in every scene and thus got more of a chance to pull himself together.

The second feature (available on several other DVDs) is the unaired 1949 tv pilot 'Jerks of All Trades,' which was taken from a kinetoscope, the only known surviving print of it. The Stooges are painters and paper-hangers called in to do the house of a man whom they just had a very bad run-in with at their office. At the house, they proceed to horrify his wife as well and to pretty much make a mess of the living room, as well as angering the husband even more when he comes home and discovers his wife hired the very paper-hangers whom he had such a humiliating experience with. While it doesn't seem quite as great as one of their shorts, perhaps due to the live audience, lack of editing, and lack of sound effects, perhaps, had the show been picked up and Columbia not threatened legal action had they pressed on with doing the show, they would have gotten a lot better with more time acting in the television medium.

Overall, it's the type of thing that most new or casual fans aren't going to be that interested in, but for longer-term fans, it's an interesting way to kill some time. The prints aren't exactly pristine, but it's not as though they're really snowy, dark, scratched, or unwatchable. The latest DVD release of 'Swing Parade' is said to have a much more restored print. Since 'Jerks of All Trades' was remastered from the only known surviving print, one can't be too picky about how it's not absolutely perfect. The only other major downside is that the Good Times logo is imprinted on the lower right-hand corner of the screen, which can be rather distracting. While it can be tuned out every so often because it's pale white against black and white images, there's still no excuse for a bug to be there. One expects that from something taped from the tv, not a supposedly professional DVD.

1 out of 5 stars buyer beware.......2005-12-27

What a disappointment. If you buy this product thinking you're going see any of the shorts that you remember as a kid you will be disappointed

4 out of 5 stars A curiosity more than anything.......2004-01-06

This is a budget title as immediately evidenced by the fact that the case is made from brittle, Grade Z plastic, but you still get a lot all things considered. The DVD contains the film Swing Parade of 1946 as well as the live-action pilot Jerks of All Trades. Swing Parade is a feature-length musical with a weak plot and lackluster songs. The Stooges have a guest role, and are as good as ever, though. Jerks of All Trades is a bit of a rarity, and as such a good addition to any Stooge fan's collection. Its interesting to see them perform live with a few little errors and the audience's laughter but it really isnt terribly funny. The DVD is produced by Good Times DVD and for some baffling reason, they plastered their logo in the lower right hand corner of every frame like you see on tv shows. Its transparent, but still annoying. The picture and sound quality are fine, but Good Times obviously did little or no restoration or repair so I dont know why they think they deserve so much credit for the works contained on the DVD. As expected, theres nothing in the way of extras and its in full frame mode only. Overall, you get a lot for budget title, but I would have like a more professionally done version of Jerks of All Trades minus the logos.

4 out of 5 stars A Lost Gem.......2002-12-27

Okay, so most Stooge fans favor the Moe, Larry & Curly version of the trio, and Shemp is featured in this live act. This Lost Classic was unearthed by Milton Berle's brother (who also gives an interview) and was actually a pilot for a series of live shows that were planned. (The Stooges were going to have a different occupation each week.) Once you immerse yourself in "Jerks of All Trades" you forget that you are watching a live performance. There are some very funny moments and the boys come through with flying colors. A must for every Stooge Collector!

4 out of 5 stars Unique Comedy.......2007-03-29

Given that this movie is nearly thirty years old, much of the content is dated. That being said, this movie is still hilarious. It all centers around Larry Hubbard played by Steve Martin, who on looking for love in NYC. The misadventures and mayhem that ensue can be gut wrenching. This film is similar in flavor to Airplane or Naked Gun. So if you like slap stick and sarcastic comedy, this flick may be a good fit.

4 out of 5 stars Clever.......2007-01-27

Early Steve Martin films can be uneven, but the brilliance shines through in his understanding of human relationships.

This is a silly film. It has a number of 'throw away' gags. It als has a great love story behind all the silliness. It also helps that Steve Martin's silliness is genuinely funny.

Unfortunartly this DVD edition is not anamorphic widescreen. It is letterboxed, but the black bars are part of the picture, and the film transfer isn't very good.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant in spots, but quite uneven........2006-05-07

There were parts of this movie that were brilliant, others that were pretty good, and some that faltered a bit. Still, it addresses an aspect of life that is too often ignored in popular entertainment because it can be, well, awkward. The recent hit "The 40 year old Virgin" is a cousin of this movie, but not the same thing.

Steve Martin plays Larry Hubbard who is certainly no alpha male. He is a good enough guy and goes after the women society tells him he should pursue. This leads to him being walked over and pushed around by, in this movie, Danielle, but the name matters less than the type. As he leaves with all his belongings (he can carry them all plus the two bags of trash she asks him to take with him as she beds Raul), he ends up in a park. Warren Evans (played brilliantly by Charles Grodin) shows up with his meager belongings and asks Larry how long he has been a Lonely Guy. Larry is unaware of this term and slowly learns the pain and suffering the life of this class of persons endures unseen by most of society.

There are flashes of brilliance in this movie. My favorite is when Larry goes to a busy and upscale restaurant and asks for a table for one. The whole restaurant becomes instantly quiet and all attention is focused on him. As the captain leads him to his table a spotlight that could be used in an air raid shines on Larry all the way to his table. There are many other wonderful moments like this and I am sure you will have your own favorites.

The love story with Iris (delightfully done by Judith Ivey) is very good until they actually get together. Then things become quite awkward and artificial. In fact, the moment we learn she has had six husbands already, well, we leave wit and dive into shtick.

However, it is the relationship and insights shared between Warren and Larry that are really the heart of the movie and make it worth seeing. Grodin's Warren is the embodiment of the poor souls doomed to this existence and is an absolutely memorable character.

Good movie, but its unevenness keeps it from being great.

4 out of 5 stars He's just a wild and lonely guy.......2006-02-05

While The Lonely Guy is first and foremost a comedy, one that descends into comic incredulity on a number of occasions, it really hits a few solid line drives in terms of the lonely guy angle. Steve Martin may be the star of this film, but Charles Grodin steals every scene he's in. He's the true lonely guy in this movie. Larry Hubbard, Martin's character, is really just a guy with really bad luck with women. After coming home to find his current girlfriend in bed with another man, Hubbard finds himself out on the street, struggling to get his bearings. That's where Warren Evans (Grodin) comes in. Warren really knows the ropes when it comes to loneliness, so he is more than qualified to instruct Hubbard in the art of living and being alone. Not all that much later, Larry meets up with Iris (Judith Ivey), a woman who tickles his fancy despite the fact she's been married more times than Larry has fingers on one hand, isn't all that attractive, is obviously lying through her teeth when she says she's thirty, and turns out to be something of a romantic psycho. Larry, of course, loses her phone number, beginning a whole series of misadventures serving to keep the two apart. Once he does meet up with Iris again, the world's most dysfunctional relationship begins. Iris, to grossly oversimplify things, doesn't want to be with a man she loves because she's afraid of being hurt again. All sorts of zany adventures ensue.

But what of Warren? Here's the guy I can identify with. While regular people are out having fun, Warren's playing chess with a sarcastic computer. He has life-size cut-outs of famous people all over the apartment so that it looks like someone is actually there when he throws a little party. He's a shell of a man who is never far from joining throngs of other lonely guys throwing themselves off the bridge downtown. Charles Grodin is just wonderful in this role. I must admit, though, that the two best scenes feature Martin. In one, we see him so desperate to find Iris again that he ends up going to the rooftop and shouting her name - only to be joined by lonely guys on all the nearby rooftops shouting the names of their own lost beloveds. In the other, we watch as Larry suffers the indignities of dining out alone. As he enters the restaurant, heads turn to stare as all conversation stops, and then a spotlight comes on following Larry all the way to his table. That's exactly what dining alone feels like.

The film ended up being a little sillier than I would have liked, particularly in terms of the relationship between Larry and Iris, and putting Steve Lawrence in your film is never a good thing (although we should all be thankful Edie wasn't with him), but The Lonely Guy is certainly a funny movie that should resonate with everyone who has ever been lonely (and I think that's just about every one of us).

5 out of 5 stars Man, did I really need this film........2005-11-29

Thank you Steve Martin, after watching this film, I will be hanging from a light fixture.

    5 out of 5 stars This One's Great!.......2007-04-29

I am honored to be the first one to review this collection. I have watched many, if not all of these episodes over and over again. If you ever had a boss you hated (and haven't we all) these are great to watch. Each of them is a tribute to the mindless workforce stupidity of a boss who lives only for his job and expects his abused workers to do the same in a variety of very funny situations suggested by the titles of each episode. Watch them all and save the Christmas episode for last because that one you won't be able to stop watching.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars California Hardcore.......2007-04-11

This great DVD contains four classic California punk shows originally released on VHS (Flipside Video Vols. 1 and 6). Two early punk bands, the Weirdos (in 1986) and the Dickies (in 1985) are paired with two hardcore bands, Circle Jerks and Bad Religion (both in 1984). A multiple-camera setup is used for each show and the loud sound seems to be from the soundboard, preserving the chaotic shows in all their ragged glory. The bands blaze through their sets as the stage divers dance among them and sometimes grab the mikes. Get it, you punk!

3 out of 5 stars Poor quality video, CLASSIC content.......2004-04-30

This is multi-angle, shot on video concert footage from the early 80's. The video is bootleg quality and the audio is muddy.

It's still great stuff if you're a fan of classic punk. Just don't expect much quality-wise. It's worth it for the Circle Jerks 20+ song set alone. That, and the out of control crowds. Lotsa fun.

5 out of 5 stars Best Of Flipside Vol. 1.......2001-05-19

This is Flipside's greatest videos. Any Flipside fan should really buy this DVD. THis is great and I can watch it over and over again. This is as great as Bad Religion. Wait, never mind, Bad Religion is 10 stars. They are great. Buy Bad Religion CDS if u like Flipside.
