Mannequin is notionally a romantic comedy in which Andrew McCarthy plays a luckless department-store employee and Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City) is an Egyptian princess reincarnated as a shop-window dummy, who comes to life when she encounters McCarthy, only to revert to mannequin status when anyone else is watching her. With her encouragement, he becomes emboldened in his career as a window decorator as well as falling in love with the princess. James Spader's oily, stammering executive is just one of the many examples of a film that tries way too hard to be funny, the sort of characterization that would be barely adequate for a TV commercial, let alone a 90-minute movie. Still, for fans of Sex and the City who might want to feast upon the spectacle of a younger Kim Cattrall, Mannequin might offer a measure of relief. --David Stubbs

A charming romantic comedy starring Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink), Kim Cattrall ('sex andthe City ), Meshach Taylor ( Designing Women ), Estelle Getty ('the Golden Girls ) and James Spader(Stargate), Mannequin is more than the sum of its fiberglass body parts it's all heart! Jonathan Switcher (McCarthy) has certainly been living up to his name. A frustrated artist, he switches from one dead-end job to another, never managing to hold on to any of them. Gorgeous and statuesque, this fiberglass femme fatale (Cattrall) helps Jonathan turn his career around, inspiring him to be the best window dresser in town. But she soon discovers that the real world isn't so easy, when they run into competitors who want to put them out of businessfor good!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-08-24

I've loved this movie ever since I was in elementary school. Now as a young adult the story is still funny, the characters are developed very well (Hollywood and those sunglasses!), and the plot moves from start to finish.

MUST SEE!

4 out of 5 stars Mannequin Magic.......2007-08-08

Fans of the 80s movies will probably enjoy it the most. Fans of John Hughes should like it for sure. A light romantic adventure comedy with Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall that is nicely done. James Spader is a decent jerk and the rest the cast including Estelle Getty add some nice elements. A young man can't seem to find his purpose until a female mannequin comes to life and tells him how to do the best he can at what he enjoys, window dressing. He then finds he is getting an abundance of attention and some of it is serious. He must figure a way to keep the secret of his mannequin and get them both out of harms way. I highly recommend this to fans of 80s romantic comedies.

5 out of 5 stars It's just so funny!.......2007-07-27

This movie is just so funny that once it started I couldn't stop laughing, I would say the romance is half fantasy, more than makes up the fun. A woman mannequin comes to life at the department store, only at night and enjoys her life with the young man dressing up the windows at night. All the other actors just add fun to the pot to make this a funny, funny movie. When he's hugging or kissing the mannequin all the people at the store laugh and just go along with the story, and with the help of the girl mannequin make Andrew McCarthy look better and better to the owner and all the public looking into the window during the day, just buy the movie and see the fun of many of the actors & actresses that made this movie so lovable. Our whole family has watched this movie more than once and enjoyed the ride. HAHA!
Shirley Frye This movie is a really another 10 stars in my book. Smile.

3 out of 5 stars Pygmalion.......2007-05-25

I thought this was an odd movie even when it first came out. It was strange, no doubt about that. But I had never heard of Pygmalion and didn't realize it was a sort of 80s version of it. Still, it made for a few light hearted moments and silly humor.

Andrew McCarthy plays an artist type named Jonathan who can't seem to hold a job because he insists on throwing a creative spin onto everything and can't do it like the boss wants. He lands a job at a department store, mostly in the hope of pursuing a dummy that he had created on a previous job. (Weird) She comes to life, and is actually a floating spirt named Emmy from ancient Egypt who is looking to be reincarnated in a more suitable time for women. They go through some madcap adventures while it's just the two of them in the store at night (kind of like the future children's book series of Eloise at the Plaza), and they begin to create their own store window designs. This attracts the attention of the public, and they reboost the store's popularity and revenue.

This was a cute idea, no doubt about that, but the movie tries too hard to create madcap adventures with the other cast of characters. Hollywood the fellow store designer is so over the top gay. The jealous store executive, the rivals at the other department store, and the semi psychotic security guard make for a few funny moments, but they are inflated and you know their half baked ideas will fail in the end and Jonathan will triumph. And all the scenes where Emmy turns back into a dummy when others are around is a little too trite. Still, it's a good time.

1 out of 5 stars Not supposed to be a tragedy. BUT IT IS!.......2005-09-16

Dreadful, shoddilly produced yarn about a woman travelling in Europe (Elke Sommer) who is spooked by a bald, lolly-pop sucking man (Telly Savalas) she constantly sees around town. After some car trouble she is forced to spend a night in a spooky castle where it turns out he's the butler (or something). The rest is just standard, forgettable European gothic-horror blah. Save yourself nine bucks and an hour and a half of your life by forgetting it before rather than after!

Directed by giallo maven Mario Bava, House of Exorcism is a truly rare cinematic find: a completely insane film. Sure, there are plenty of movies that are a little quirky, and even more that start off reasonably and then go around the bend later on, but in House of Exorcism, at no time is anything even remotely comprehensible happening. (No, not even if you watch it a second time.) Elke Sommer stars as Lisa, a beautiful tourist who spies an ancient fresco of the devil and seconds later leaves her tour group to become hopelessly lost. Fresco look-alike Telly Savalas, tongue and lollipop firmly in cheek, shows up holding a life-size mannequin and we're off. What follows is a whirl of opulent sets, vaguely menacing Europeans, and plenty of blood. It's the kind of movie where mysterious and weighty significance is given to lines such as "I brought you some cake. It's your favorite... with chocolate sprinkles." Like all great art, House of Exorcism asks more questions than it answers: Aren't we all just mannequins? Is Telly's face supposed to be obscured by that candelabrum? If those ghosts are so powerful, why have they been seated in coach? All this and more awaits you in The House of Exorcism. --Ali Davis

Description

While visiting Toledo, Spain, American tourist Lisa Reiner (Elke Sommer) experiences a feeling of deja vu when she sees an ancient mural of the Devil carrying away the dead. Hearing a familiar melody, she wanders away from her companions into a series of encounters with men who inexplicably recognize her from a past life. Hopelessly lost as night falls, Lisa begs a ride from a passing Packard, which breaks down outside a mansion where a young man (Alessio Orano) lives with his blind mother (Alida Valli) and a charming butler (Telly Savalas), who just happens to resemble the Devil from the mural! After a night of murder, necrophilia and horrific revelations, Lisa comes face-to-face with the secrets of her past identity and her connection to the bizarre rituals she has witnessed. This is the original Mario Bava film later reworked and reshot for American release as "The House of Exorcism."

4 out of 5 stars One Of Bava's Best...At Least I Think So.......2007-07-15

Lisa and the Devil is one of those wacky horror films that doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, but it's bizarre, stylish and just coherent enough to be an interesting ride. It involves a tourist who's entryway into one goofyass night is a painting of the devil she sees in a village square. After the painting, she runs into Telly Savalas(he looks like the devil in the painting), who's carrying and talking to a giant doll. Then she runs into an old love of hers(who looks like the doll Savalas was carrying), accidentally kills him, and hitches a ride with a rich couple and their driver(who's also banging the wife). The car breaks down in front of a mansion owned by a blind woman, her son, and their butler....Telly Savalas!! From that point on, it's one bizarre night of hallucinations and murder and sex and dolls and lollipops. This isn't one of those movies that throws a bunch of weird stuff at you and then slaps you in the face with an explanation in the closing minutes. It does through you little helpful hints here and there so you're not completely lost or anything. As strange and vague as the movie is, I wouldn't exactly call it hard to follow. But in the end, you'll most likely have more questions than answers(unless you're one of those high falootin' film snobs who seems to have an answer for everything). You won't be able to deny it was unique though! This is one of my favorite Bava films. It kinda sets the tone for similar "dream logic" horror films that would come out of Italy in the later years like Argento's Inferno or Fulci's The Beyond. Needless to say the modern filmgoer will chalk this one up to being pointless and stupid. Hey, at least it's quite unlikely this will get remade!

5 out of 5 stars Viva Mario Bava.......2007-02-23

Hallucinatory, what a ride this movie is.it will keep you guessing till the end, personally i think this movie is a masterpiece of italian horror,They just do not make them like this anymore. It is being released by anchor bay soon in a mario bava boxed set all of his movies are fantastic.get it while you can

2 out of 5 stars What???.......2006-10-03

I saw a special on Mario Bava and it featured many of his horror films. They looked very interesting and interviwers said tha many of Bava's ideas were later copied by American filmakers. With that said "Lisa and the Devil" filmed in '76 is a mess of a movie. It makes no sense, and sometimes that's fun in a horror flick, but in this movie it's annoying and quite dull. I realize I saw this movie on cable but what happened to the exorcism scene that I saw in the special on Bava. Not that it would have made the movie any more intelligable, but at least a bit more interesting. Overall not a good movie.

3 out of 5 stars Lisa and the Devil.......2004-08-07

Stunning camera work, beautiful sets and an interesting take on the Devil by Telly Savalas compete with deliberate pacing and a plot sacrificed to style to make LISA AND THE DEVIL a mixed bag. This is considered by some to be cult favorite Mario Bava's masterpiece, although the producers thought it was so non-commercial they insisted Bava shoot new scenes and re-edit it to make it into a more traditional horror flick. Probably a wise choice, because the director's cut is more pretentious and confusing than frightening.
Still, it looks good, Savalas seems to be having a ball playing a butler/Devil, and Elke Sommer is gorgeous. If your taste in horror turns away from slash and gore and towards the visual and contemplative LISA AND THE DEVIL may satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars I EXORCISE YOU FROM THIS HOUSE FOREVER!.......2004-04-14

This DVD double feature of LISA AND THE DEVIL and the remix HOUSE OF EXORCISM is the only way to see Mario Bava's masterpiece! Anyway, LISA AND THE DEVIL is a dazzling horror movie made the only way that Mario Bava could possibly direct it. It's like PSYCHO by way of the Brothers Grimm: Lisa Reiner (Elke Sommer), a tourist lost in Toledo, Spain, encounters a blind Contessa and her unbalanced son and their lollipop-sucking butler (Telly "Kojak" Savalas), along with a whole mess of bizarre occurances. This movie defies all logical explaination; you must see it to believe it. Telly Savalas is the highlight of the movie; he steals every scene he appears in (This is where he discovered what would become Kojak's trademark!).
As for HOUSE OF EXORCISM, it is one of the better Italian imitations of THE EXORCIST, with a great performance by Robert Alda as the priest who must deal with a possessed Lisa. Unfortunately, the re-editing takes away much of the mysticism of LISA and often comes off as ridiculously humorous. However, this movie comes with a commentary by Sommer and producer Alfredo Leone which is a must for Bavaphiles and film buffs alike.
Of all the Mario Bava movies that have come out on DVD that I own, I have to say that LISA AND THE DEVIL/HOUSE OF EXORCISM is the most essential. I also recommend the following: Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA, Lucio Fulci's THE BEYOND, Don Coscarelli's PHANTASM, and of course, Sam Raimi's THE EVIL DEAD. In fact, watch all of these together for some real spooky horror-movie fun!

This terrible 1987 film stars Kim Cattrall as an ancient spirit from Egypt who occupies the form of a department-store mannequin. A store employee (Andrew McCarthy) is the only one who sees the woman within, and they fall for one another. A great idea that might have made a nifty romantic comedy in the late 1930s--when Hollywood knew how to make these things--is bungled here. Meshach Taylor (of TV's Designing Women) is embarrassing as a flamboyant follower of fashion. You want comedies about spirits mingling with mortals? Try Topper or The Bishop's Wife. --Tom Keogh

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars It's a spectacular romance! :).......2005-07-03

80's romantic comedy movies have never gotten a great rap, but this movie displays many of the reasons why we love these guilty pleasures. Yes, the guy is meek... and yes, the girl is a mannequin, but since when have great romantic movies ever been about what's "realistic". An ignorant, near-sighted, movie-goer who can't possibly read between the lines of a quirky plot to see what the real message of the story is will never appreciate a classic like Mannequin. But for those of us who know how to see beyond the basic setting of the movie to the undeniable chemistry that is going on, we can't help but love it!. When it comes right down to it, it's a story of two people looking for a place to belong, one needs someone to believe in him and inspire him, the other is a girl who's looking for someone to accept her just the way she is, charisma and all. The world will always try to come between two people who are striving to make a "complicated" relationship work, but ultimately love really does triumph over all. The chemistry between Andrew McCarthy and Kim Catrall made this quirky romatic comedy really come together, and to this day Mannequin has warmed the hearts of all the "hopefull-romantics" who see it. All-in-all, Love makes you do things you never thought you'd do... and THAT's reality! ;)

5 out of 5 stars A Sexual Vanilla Sky for the Thinking Man.......2004-09-12

    "You are one...sick...puppy!" indeed.

A taut psychological thriller, "Mannequin" is a whirlwhind decent of one man further into his mind and into madness. Obsessed with Egyptian motifs, the man finds sexual release only in dry humping the piece of wood in his store only to spite James Spader. Brilliant. His conflicted sexuality manifests not only in the hallucinations of the alive mannequin, but also in his eccentric homosexual "friend," Hollywood. It is this "Designing Women" star that really "brought the movie to life," so to speak; the thoroughness of the main character's fake persona's coming to life couldn't be made more convincing. And the ironic denounment is filled with carefully planted clues by director Michael Gottlieb all to be answered in his "Mannequin 2."

Though I do agree with one view who said, "This movie would be gooder with Michael J. Fox," there isn't much any human being could create to thrilling climax on the mannequin-destroying-machine. I recommend this product with a proud five stars, even though I am personally holding off the for 20th anniversay DVD edition, if only so the director's commentary can finally answer the unanswered questions. I'm hoping that Andrew McCarthy discusses how to make such magic with a mannequin and how to keep things cool with a hot dame like Kim "I Had Sex With the Whole City" Cattrall as well. We too would never interrupt him when he's "getting a piece of wood," as the irrepressible Hollywood put it.

Perhaps Sight and Sound shall lift its moratorium against "Mannequin" or "Mannequin 2" in next decade's top ten list.

5 out of 5 stars DID YOU KNOW...........2004-08-04

It's hard to believe little "Emmy" from this movie grew up to be "Samantha" on Sex & the City. Brat packer Andrew McCarthy ...whatever happened to him? A little bit of trivia for ya---NO SOUNDTRACK was ever released because the movie big shots didn't think the movie would do all that well at the box office. STARSHIP'S song NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW was released as a single on 45 because it was so popular. Sadly, the other songs in the movie, BELINDA CARLISE'S IN MY WILDEST DREAMS was never released & ALISHA'S DO YOU DREAM ABOUT ME was only available on her 1987 solo album which is now out of print. In 2007 will be its 20th anniversary since the movie was released. You'd think they'd rerelease it on DVD or put out a soundtrack.

The 1987 movie "Mannequin" was a great movie to see over agian after not seeing it for a long time. Andrew McCarthy is a very funny actor. It would also be nice if added to the "Product information" was the music info played in the movie.

buy this dvd, music videos are excellent, specially Babylon A.D. Quite disturbing, actually...but this translates as good. I would buy PanDamonAeon along with this. The only reason it only gets 4 stars is that i wish it was longer...

4 out of 5 stars This is just wicked and sick!.......2005-06-04

I like COF's music because they have a style all their own. I just got this dvd and i must say these guys are just sick and wicked. This dvd has only 3 videos on it but it is like a horror movie. I don't understand why Babalon A.D was banned in the U.S it is not any worse than some of marilyn manson's videos. This video don't show alot but what it leaves to the imagination is just sickening. Dani Filth certainly has the ability to shock with his imagination of evil and seduction. But they also have some intelligence in their material not just a bunch of peversion and vulgarity like Manson does. This band is the definition of Goth metal and this dvd proves that in every way. I don't worship Satan or sacrifice animals or any of that stupid garbage because i listen to Cradle of Filth and like their music. I take this kinda music and imagery for what it really is and that is entertainment. Just like watching a horror movie you can always turn it off. Anyway this a good dvd for the fans of the Cradle. I gave it a 4 star because i wished there was more on it.

5 out of 5 stars CRADLE RULES!!! A SHORT BUT " BITTERSWEET" DVD!!!!!.......2005-02-24

WOW!! This little Gem should definately NOT be missed by Cradle Of Filth fans!!! The video for: "Babylon A.D." and "Mannequin" are reason enough to purchase this DVD, but the extras you get are really AWSOME too!! Unlike the DVD's of: "Heavy Left Handed and Candid" and "PanDaemonAeon" this is packaged in a CD jewel case(NOT the traditional "Clamshell") which is GREAT because you can put it among the REST of your Cradle Of Filth CD collection!!! and fits perfectly in ALL CD size cases!! GREAT DVD from A GREAT BAND!! Don't hesitate to pick this one up!! I really DON'T think you will be Dissapointed!!! I can't wait to see what Cradle puts out next!!!(PS:)Be sure to pick up: "Heavy Left Handed and Candid" and "PanDaemonAeon" for More GREAT Filth videos and PLENTY of extras!!!LONG LIVE METAL!! and KEEP SPREADING THE FILTH!!!!

This DVD is kick @$$ the video for mannequin, babalon A.D.,and The Promise Of Fever and some more kick feature's like freak show. And there biography look just put in simpler words(buy this DVD). If your a big Cradle Of Filth fan you'll love this DVD trust me and from read the other reviews this DVD is the shortest of all of there other DVD's.(And if your still read this stop and just buy the DVD you won't be disappointed!!!)

5 out of 5 stars Good For What It's Worth.......2004-03-10

I have this DVD and it's good for what it's worth. It has the video for Mannequin, Babalon A.D., and a live video of another song. The video for Babalon A.D. was banned in America and this is the only place you can see it! Just that alone is worth buying it! It also has a 10 min. documentary on the making of the video for "Mannequin". Out of the three DVDs, Pandemoneon, Heavy Left Handed and Candid and Mannequin, this is the shortest. It's so short that I don't really know if you could consider this an "official" DVD. But overall, it is worth getting for the video of Babalon A.D. and the making of "Mannequin" if nothing else. I would recommend getting it, just so you can add more Cradle of Filth music videos to your collection.

    2 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointed.......2006-02-24

As a lover of horror movies, I purchased this movie expecting more and expecting gore. Although some scenes were cool, overall this movie was boring at times and there was poor acting. College students are asked to put together a mannequin which they called Jigsaw. After burning Jigsaw, he comes to life and starts killing them off one by one. A few good killing scenes but overall, a disappointing movie. Rent it, don't buy it!

4 out of 5 stars DON'T PUT ON THAT FINISHING TOUCH!.......2005-12-18

GOODIES FROM FULL-MOON JUST KEEP 'A' COMIN! THIS ONE IS ABOUT A COUPLE OF TEENS WHO ARE ASKED TO PUT TOGETHER A FIGURINE FOR AN EXPEIRIMENT SEVERAL OF THEM DECIDE...WELL I'M JUST GOING TO BE STUPID & PUT TOGETHER A KILL-BOT AND NOT EVEN THROW IN A REMOTE CONTOL,CAUSE I'M A HEATHEN! SO THEY CRAFT & DESIGHN A DROID NAMED JIG-SAW THEN HE GETS HAYWIRED(GET-IT)& KILLS PEOPLE! THE ENTIRE REASON I'VE GIVEN IT 4 STARS IS CAUSE YOU DON'T USUALLY PUT TOGETHER JUNK PEICES AND SEE THEM ACTUALLY COME TO LIFE!

4 out of 5 stars Bizarre, but fairly good.......2005-09-10

As a class assignment, some college students are each given a piece of a mannequin which they are to decorate with something personal, or that at least says something about them. Then it is reassembled and they tell the stories behind what they did. This is done at a bar as everyone is getting very drunk. The stories turn out to be rather interesting. It could have easily slipped into melodrama, but it manages to instead be quite dramatic. Anyhow, the mannequin comes to life and begins stalking and killing them.

The characters really make this movie, they are very realistic and, with the exception of the uber-obnoxious ingrate, they manage to be rather sympathetic. The action (killings) are rather uninteresting, as there is little suspense and no gore. However, the Tawny character is absolutely fabulous to look at, she does an extremely sleazy dance at the bar, and then strips to her undies for a few minutes. Her character is also really screwed up, real Jerry Springer show material, but still she's interesting and realistic. There's also another girl in a tube top that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. And the main heroine gets stripped to her undies at the end. I call that good film making.

As a bonus, you get the movie Totem on this disk as well (at least it was on my copy). It's a slow moving, zero budget horror movie about 6 teenagers who are mysteriously drawn to a cabin out in the woods. There are some demon dolls involved that want 3 of the kids to kill the other 3 so that they may bring the dead back to life and perhaps take over the world or something. It manages to be vaguely entertaining. There's also a commentary track for Jigsaw. I only listened to the first few minutes of it, and rather bizarrely they seem to have every gaffer, best boy and perhaps even the caterer on the track. I'm looking forward to giving it a listen at some later date.

5 out of 5 stars Art class hell at Stinky Pete's.......2004-12-27

Well here's an indie horror film that's better than most. A creepy art teacher comes up with a strange project for his students. They are each to take a mannequin part, decorate it, and bring it in the following week. But class is going at night in the Stinky Pete's bar. A drinking game is involved putting 'Jigsaw' back together.

After the grotesque thing is put together (complete with saw blades, sawed off shotguns, Roman candles, and newspaper clippings) it is to be burned. Well of course it comes to life. It now kills off it's creators taking a body part from each.

Aimee Bravo as Tawny is the highliught of this film. No nude scenes, but she is so hot I swore she was Daizee Kellogg from BustyAmateurs.com. I had to read the credits to find out who she was. She dances in the bar, tells her classmates a heartbreaking story, and spends a good amount of time in a blue bra and [...]. Well the shotgun shell with her name on it does her in and she doesn't leave her sister behind after-all.

Another dude gets strangled with barbed-wire. A girl gets killed in her husbands tractor-trailer. The rig driver gets sawed up along with another kid who tries to escape in a car. Thatleaves the professor and one female student (Stinky Pete had a heart attack).

So he knocks her unconscious, strips her to her underwear, and ties her down with Christmas lights (that'll teach her to resist his advances). The professor thinks that Jigsaw just needs one more part, a head. So he's willing to sacrifice his student's life to save his own. Jigsaw comes in and sees her.

I'll let you see the ending yourself.

Unfortunately the film ends suddenly with the last killing. We never see what Jigsaw does with the parts. The film is short at an hour and fifteen minutes. Too bad we didn't get 15 additional minutes to see the result of Jigsaw's handiwork. But hey, at least the bad guy finally wins one.

    5 out of 5 stars It's about friggin' time!!!!.......2007-06-11

Well I am glad this movie made it to DVD at least an import for that matter. I haven't yet purchased this import DVD but if it is as good as those who have said it is, then they'd better be telling the truth because this is one movie IN AMERICA that I wish would RErelease it so I can get it. But anyway, it is still a good movie and though the first one was better than this one, this one still has the same flavor as the first. The only thing is, one returning cast member comes in this one and that Meshach Taylor as Hollywood Montrose. Also, the building PRINCE & CO. returns. In this Mannequin, William Ragsdale has two parts in the beginning of the movie as Prince William who falls for the Enchanted Peasant girl Jessie Kristy Swanson and when his mother the queen doesn't approve she dispatches Terry Kiser who has two parts Sorceror to put a evil necklace on her that would freeze her for a thousand years or until a true love can free her of the spell. Once that has happened, years have past and she ends up in a tour display and they say that the legend is not true but, a count by the name of Spretzel (also played by Terry Kiser) of the country this all originated from Homptman-Koenig, he tries to get her for himself. And a new employee at Prince & Co. where the presentacion as Hollywood pronounces it, takes place Jason Williamson (also played by William Ragsdale) discovers the Enchanted Peasant girl and sees she's come to live but at this point does NOT know that the necklace was the source of her freezing. And he does all he can to save her and falls in love with her at the end. There are some funny parts and there are some stupid parts but, still this movie does deserve a DVD RErelease and hopefully in America it will but right now it is an import and if this thing IS an ALL region as the seller is boasting then I want it!!!! I think Kristy Swanson is however very sexy in this.

The outstanding film in this collection is Pedro Serrazino's elegant "The Story of the Cat and the Moon," the tale of a frustrated lover of an elusive feline. The artist skillfully juxtaposes areas of black and white, and plays with reflections and reversed images to create a graceful, pleasing visual essay. The rest of the collection consists of "B" and "C" level films from the festival circuit that offer an occasional interesting moment or striking image, but fail as sustained narratives. Jiri Barta uses live-action footage and stop-motion animation of crumbling department store mannequins to present a grim commentary on the regimented life of contemporary urban society in the overly long "Club of the Discarded." Paul Vester cuts between grainy live action and various animated styles to illustrate "interviews, hypnotic regression tapes, and original drawings" by supposed alien abduction victims. The array of animated visuals remains less than the sum of its parts, and the viewer is left with the feeling that Vester has exploited his unimpressive subjects. Julie Zammarchi uses a similar palette of visuals styles in "Ape," but the results amount to little more than a shaggy-dog--or -monkey--story. Unrated; suitable for ages 16 and up for sexual situations, nudity, and grotesque imagery. --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars Five strange, sustained visions.......2007-01-18

Jiri Barta's "Club of the Discarded" is my favorite of this bunch, a stop-animation featuring outdated and damaged mannequins. It comes across as eerie but ambiguous, leaving a lotfor the viewer to bring to the imagery. Serrazina's "Story of the Cat and the Moon" is elegant and eloquent, a sweet dessert for finishing off this visual feast. Other pieces, including "Abductees," didn't do as much for me - I just don't feel any need to respond to alien abduction stories in a serious way, and Vester missed the huge potential for commenting on the many human weaknesses involved.

It's a mixed bag with, including some very strong selections. If you like animation that explores off the beaten path, you'll probably enjoy this, or parts of it.

    1 out of 5 stars What a flop.......2004-02-26

Anyone expecting either good animation or good noir is going to be very disappointed with this collection. By and large, the films are monumentally dull. The brief "Cat and the Moon" provides almost the only glimmer of interest; the rest of the disc feels like a bunch of student exercises.

This disc will probably bore you silly, despite the trio of five-star reviews below -- all by "A viewer from Chicago." (Wow, what a coincidence that three Windy City residents all loved this tedious DVD and used the same words to describe it.) If you're looking for great animation with a dark twist, try Jan Svankmajer or the Brothers Quay instead.

5 out of 5 stars coolest animation around.......2002-01-16

This is a wonderful collection of bizarre, beautiful, and dark animated films which have won many prizes internationally. You will really enjoy this- a special treat to have this "best of the underground" distributed at such a low price. Worth watching for years to come!

    5 out of 5 stars cartoons.......2001-12-31

This is a great group of animated films from the underground: funny, dark, and beautiful

5 out of 5 stars cool and dark animation.......2001-11-07

This compilation will not please the conservatives who adore Walt Disney, nor will it win any Oscars (too outrageous). But if you like underground comics, alternative music, and are interested in what the best of the experimental animators are doing - then you will love this tape. Paul Vester, Suzan Pitt, and Jiri Barta whose dark and beautifully realized work are a part of Cartoon Noir are some of the best underground animators working today. The films in this compilation are original and striking examples of where animation can take the imagination. These works ran theatrically at the Cinema Village in New York and received rave reviews throughout the United States. Don't listen to Mr. Establishment, Charles Solomon.
