Jump roping that's worlds away from anything seen on the local playground bursts from the screen in this Disney Original Movie about the clash between two athletes and their respective sports. Boxer Izzy Daniels (Corbin Bleu) has a hard time taking neighbor Mary's (Keke Palmer) devotion to jump roping seriously, but as Izzy trains relentlessly to maintain his undefeated status and win the Golden Glove, Mary's team practices just as intensely for the city Double Dutch finals. Izzy gains a reluctant respect for Mary's sport when he accompanies his sister Karin (Kylee Russell) to a competition, but it takes some serious convincing to persuade him to fill in for a teammate who's abandon the team on the cusp of city finals. Izzy quickly discovers that Double Dutch is more demanding and rewarding than he'd ever imagined, but when the entire school finds out about his newest sporting exploit, he's taunted into quitting. As Izzy tries to regain his boxing focus, he suddenly realizes that winning the Golden Glove is more his father's (David Reivers) dream than his own. After some serious soul-searching, Izzy decides that he can't let what others think keep him from doing what makes him happy. This action-packed Disney Channel Original Movie takes a unique look at the varied world of sports and features some great catchy new music from Corbin Bleu and Jordan Pruitt, but the game-winner is its focus on the importance of following one's heart. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Fast Food for the Soul.......2007-06-01

This DVD was a gift for my wife, who is one of the "Jump In" fans in this house. I don't have quite the enthusiasm for this movie that they do, which leads me to believe that it is something of a "chick flick."

A tight plot, engaging characters, and quick pace put this show several notches above "viewable."

I enjoyed the story of a boy learning how to deal with conflicting demands and responsibilities.

The jump-rope contest choreography is impressive, and helps make this DVD a good buy, although sports purists might question the fusion of jump-rope tricks and boxing in another scene.

Disney Studios seems to be re-discovering the bourgeois inhibitions that made it a global success, so those who require relevance, naughty words, and people with the self-control of an ADHD tomcat in their entertainment will be sorely disappointed in "Jump In." Aside from these deficiencies, this is a highly entertaining musical.

5 out of 5 stars I love this dvd .......2007-05-19

This dvd is awesome and the bonus stuff is just great .

5 out of 5 stars Another great family film starring Keke Palmer.......2007-05-17

I bought this because of child actor Keke Palmer appears in it and I was not disappointed. It's such a fun film with cute actors, lots of incredible double dutch scenes and a great tutorial offered in the special effects section. It's a must have!

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-05-15

We are from South Africa, and the movie only came on our disney channel after we got the DVD, so my kids were pretty happ with themselves. It was a really nice movie, it was heartwarming, and i found it very touching. We even shed a few tears!!!My kids now want to do Double Dutch!!!

5 out of 5 stars fun family movie.......2007-05-12

This movie won't win any oscars, but it's great for what it is, a great family film. It's so hard to find movies that all of my children (ages 2-10) will sit down and watch and that WE feel good about them watching. This is one of those movies. Made in the same mold as High School Musical, I hope Disney continues to pump out these type of movies. They're slightly cheesy, but a refreshing change from many movies marketed today for kids.

The 1972 disaster hit The Poseidon Adventure was ripe for a big-budget CGI remake, and who better to helm it than thriller expert Wolfgang Petersen, director of Das Boot and The Perfect Storm? It hardly matters that a TV movie remake (also based on Paul Gallico's original 1969 source novel) was made less than a year before, because Petersen's version is far more spectacular, with shocking digital effects, massive sets, amazing stunt-work and enough fire and water to fill five movies with challenging worst-case scenarios. Once again, the plot concerns the capsizing (by a massive "rogue wave") of a state-of-the-art luxury liner, and the struggle of a small group of survivors (including Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, and Richard Dreyfuss) to climb upwards, to the ship's hull, in their treacherous quest for a safe exit. Unfortunately, most of these characters are two-dimensional and under-developed (especially when compared to the 1972 film's all-star cast), and the unimaginative screenplay by Mark Protosevich (reportedly worked on by several uncredited writers) subjects them to a rote series of obstacles that grow increasingly routine and repetitious, not to mention contrived and illogical. Again, it hardly matters, because Petersen's handling of non-stop action is so slick and professional that Poseidon gets by on sheer adrenaline. The capsizing scenes are nothing less than awesome, with some effects so real (and so horrifying) that younger and more sensitive viewers may need to look away. And while it lacks the engaging humanity of the 1972 version, Poseidon is certainly never boring. Faint praise, perhaps, but you'll get your popcorn's worth of mindless entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

i really liked this movie, it was pretty good. the whole ship going upside down, having to find a way out before the ship sinks, and only a handful survive. i enjoyed it from beginning to end. the jumping, the climbing, and the swimming they did throughout the whole ship to get to their destination was nicely done. i do recommend because it has that good combination of action and suspense to draw you in. josh lucas was is a very good actor and here he just proved it again. something charming about this guy, and they way he just falls into the leadership role, and becomes the hero. kurt russell, the doting father, has to get through it with his daughter. he hasn't lost his touch. the small appearance of fergie was widely viewed as well. it wasn't another big ship sinks movie, but a story of survival, in one of the worst case scenarios. i do recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Lame.......2007-09-05

Indeed, who better to helm a mega budget, CGI heavy remake of the Poseidon Adventure than Wolfgang Petersen? The director of Troy, Das Boot, and The Perfect Storm re-works the 70's classic with some incredible tools at his disposal, as well as a potential-laced cast (Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfus, Emmy Rossum, Jacinda Barret, Andre Braugher, Freddy Rodriguez, and Kevin Dillon), but alas, Poseidon ends up being the mega budget, mainstream, brainless, disaster flick that you probably think it is. The script does absolutely nothing to make the viewer feel any kind of sympathy or attachment to the characters, let alone care what happens to any of them as they all fight to survive when the state of the art, luxury ship capsizes after being hit by a massive wave. Despite the incredible looking CGI effects and some great, old fashioned stunt work, Poseidon ultimately falls flat in the department that could have made it something truly special: character development. It's not incredibly bad by any means, and definitely worth seeing for rainy day or brainless entertainment, but in any other case besides, you won't miss anything if you never see Poseidon.

This could have been a great movie. Even though it had impressive special effects, it just didn't have the cast. The movie was too short. It should have spent more time building on the characters. Like I said, it could have been a really great movie.

The reason to buy? I never catch all the nuances of a story or the actors the first time around. And buy only if you think you will like it!

I have always like the Poseidon story - I thoroughly enjoyed the different take of this movie and the characters. Although I understood it better after going into the Special Features.

Josh Lucas was a great addition and of course I was interested because of Kurt Russell [who I loved in SOLDIER] not much dialogue there.
Richard Dreyfuss, I was curious to see how he has progressed from JAWS to ALWAYS to now.
And I am always fascinated on how they make a movie. Wow! I have a great admiration for the actors and actress's who do a lot of their own stunts.
What they must go through to provide us with entertainment. Especially the stunt men and women. Seventy five shirts for Josh?

I like this description of the ship - "13-deck, 20 stories tall Poseidon as it shifts, lurches and implodes" - Yup! I was waiting for the darn thing to explode.

I had just got through watching "Mega Disasters" on History of these giant waves that can happen in the Atlantic and turn our coast lines into major disasters. New York like another Venice.
I think a 150 foot "rogue" in the Atlantic with at least one ship a year being lost to one of these waves is hard to imagine - but a given fact.

Believe me you will enjoy this version of Poseidon without too much trouble - the characters are recognizable - the shots are great - the coloring definitely excellent - I missed the music for the action.

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND - for good clean action.

The Reivers, based on a William Faulkner novel, is a spirited comedy-drama starring Steve McQueen in a rare character part as Boon Hoggenbeck, a ne'er-do-well, turn-of-the-century Mississippi farm hand and cousin of 11-year-old naif Lucius McCaslin (Mitch Vogel). The arrival of a handsome new automobile purchased by Lucius' grandfather, Boss McCaslin (a golden performance by Will Geer), causes an uproar when Boon and another cousin, Ned McCaslin (Rupert Crosse), who is half African American, vie to drive the vehicle around town. Boss's departure by train for a funeral gives Boon, Ned, and Lucius an opportunity to drive in style to Memphis, where young McCaslin's eyes are opened to a larger world of hard-core racism, prostitution, corruption, and the tyranny of the powerful over the vulnerable. In short order, Lucius finds his innate decency and integrity lessen the sting of disillusionment and helplessness. Director Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) keeps things brisk and breezy, but never loses sight of the long shadow of adulthood that blots out Lucius' innocence. Presented in widescreen. --Tom Keogh

Description

Based on the novel by William Faulkner, THE REIVERS tells the story of a young boy who leaves home and sets out on a journey with his best friend and Boon Hogganbeck (McQueen), his family's handyman. During the trip from Jefferson to Memphis, the trio learns some valuable life lessons.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of Steve McQueen's best!.......2007-08-07

I first saw The Reivers at the beginning of the '70s and loved it. Over the years, I've always thought that it was, by far, Steve McQueen's most entertaining movie. The storyline, performances and cinematography are splendid. Burgess Meredith's narration is superb. This is a movie that makes you lose yourself and feel that you are there. This is also my second purchase of The Reivers. My first copy was a VHS video. I lent it out and the borrower loved it so much he never returned it.

5 out of 5 stars The Reivers.......2007-07-02

Picaresque, whimsical tale benefits from Rydell's warm yet keen sense of nostalgia in portraying a charmingly innocent period, not to mention a refreshingly atypical McQueen performance as a sweet, lovable rogue. Inspired, light-hearted support from co-star Crosse earned him an Oscar nod, along with John Williams's jaunty score. (Note: though the motley trio do spend time in a Memphis "bawdy house", the sequence is handled with sufficient delicacy to make the movie appropriate for older children.)

4 out of 5 stars The Reivers starring Steve McQueen.......2006-11-10

The Reivers is a wonderful film, suitable for the entire family. It has funny and touching moments and as in many other films, includes life lessons. Steve McQueen isn't half bad either!

5 out of 5 stars John Steinbeck's - "the Reivers".......2006-09-14

First time I saw this movie was the spring of 1970 - in a theatre that I was the projectionist. We played this movie for a week. Right at first, I wasn't sure if I was either going to be bored with a movie and title that I never heard of, or might be surprised. It was the latter. I was massively impressed with Steve McQueen's performance as Boon Hoggenbeck, along with the narrative by Burgess Meredith (in which 10 yrs later on PBS stations. Meredith was in a concert of sorts and read the story of this same novel). The way the film was made - with the "Yellow Winton Flyer" as the basis of the movie, the way Boon made the boy lie to his grandpa - all of that what made this movie so memoriable. I managed to grab a copy of this movie when it broadcast on public tv on video, but a pretty sloppy copy to be had.. Now, just glad that it finally made it to DVD and in the WideScreen edition that it solely deserved to be viewed in. OH..one thing that I forgot..John Williams did the music for this and one can almost hear what would be coming from this composer in the coming years..

5 out of 5 stars "I just want to pay my dollar and have some fun.".......2006-08-12

This Norman Rockwell snapshot of turn-of-the-century Mississippi has aged better than expected. I remember this being such a grand adventure on its theatrical release, now its more of a moderately paced nostalgic curio, but good wholesome family entertainment nonetheless.

Steve McQueen plays Boon Hogganbeck, an adopted stray that was taken in by the local Big Daddy played by the inimitable Will Geer known simply as "Boss." Boon is assigned to watch over the Boss' grandson Lucius, but Boon has been around the block a few times, and his testosterone goes into warp drive when the Boss has a spanking new Winton Flyer delivered on the inbound train.

While Boon is ardently watching over his new toy, another "family" member Ned who just happens to be a descendant of slaves AND Boss McCanlis' own grandaddy, takes off in the Winton Flyer causing general mayhem and destruction all over town before accidentally bringing this new horseless wagon to a stop. as punishment, Boss and the family leave town for a funeral, and consign 11 year old Lucius to the care of Boon, who has the Memphis city limits on his mind. Once safely out of town, Boon and Lucius concoct a story that is told to all the local family members assuring their safe gettaway, then off they go only to find later that lunatic Ned has stowed away in the back seat, setting the stage for a raucous adventure that had been largely forgotten over the past 30 years.

A terrific supporting cast with Michael Constantine as the owner of uh "The House", and Sharon Farrell as the...er object of Boon's affection. This movie is a delight for the family, and any serious DVD collector as the original brilliance of the sets and Mississippi Delta scenery has been fully restored with this beautiful widescreen transfer, and the 5.1 audio remastering is much better than the original release. All in all I would have to say this film classic deserves 5 Melons.

4 out of 5 stars AN ADVENTUROUS VOYAGE!!.......2007-09-08

i really liked this movie, it was pretty good. the whole ship going upside down, having to find a way out before the ship sinks, and only a handful survive. i enjoyed it from beginning to end. the jumping, the climbing, and the swimming they did throughout the whole ship to get to their destination was nicely done. i do recommend because it has that good combination of action and suspense to draw you in. josh lucas was is a very good actor and here he just proved it again. something charming about this guy, and they way he just falls into the leadership role, and becomes the hero. kurt russell, the doting father, has to get through it with his daughter. he hasn't lost his touch. the small appearance of fergie was widely viewed as well. it wasn't another big ship sinks movie, but a story of survival, in one of the worst case scenarios. i do recommend.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been..........2007-08-22

This could have been a great movie. Even though it had impressive special effects, it just didn't have the cast. The movie was too short. It should have spent more time building on the characters. Like I said, it could have been a really great movie.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH ADMIRATION TO THE ACTORS THAT DO THEIR OWN STUNTS.......2007-07-17

2 out of 5 stars I was expecting Jack Bauer to pop out any minute.......2006-07-23

Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba, The Big Hit) stars in this forgettable thriller about Detective Jack Lucas who is on a case of a killer. The killer Oliver Chadwicke played by the awesome Edoardo Ballerini (Dinner Rush, The Pest) is also obsessed over a stripper named Jessica played by the miscast but still beautiful Kari Wuhrer (Sliders, General Hospital). Oliver also is very smart but has a shaky past. Jack figures out that the killer might be setting him up to make it look like he is the killer. He finds out who he is and his history etc etc. Nothing much here except a very sexy looking Kari Wuhrer. Formulaic plot involving Cop vs. Bad Guy and the Bad Guy is tryin to fram the Cop. Phillips & Ballerini are the only two that hold the film together. Also starring Gwen McGee (Coach Carter, Mercury Rising), Jack McGee (Breakdown, Rescue Me), Iva Hasperger (Exorcism, Vlad) and Carmen Argenziano (Starate SG-1, Identity)

5 out of 5 stars Ballarini is THE GREATEST.......2004-07-06

I watched this movie once on cable, and Happily Surpised to see Eudardo Ballarini playing a VILLIAN, opessed to the gentle role he played in "Looking for an Echo", which is also an EXCELLENT movie! Angela Landers, from Tampa Florida

4 out of 5 stars Good formalic Movie!.......2003-03-29

I picked "Malevolent" because Kari Wuhrer was in it. She is not only beautiful but a good actress. Lou Diamond Phillips pulled off a great performance as detective Jack Lucas trying to clear his name. The real star of the movie is Edooardo Ballerini who was the scary heavy in this film.

As you watch this movie you soon can figure out what will happen next. Not a bad thing, but at times its just too obvious thus making the scenes not as much impact as they would. Pretty much you seen all this stuff before. But still everything was good. For a "straight to video" movie they really went all out for production of the car chase scenes which looked great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-01-12

After passing out in a bar's bathroom cop Jack (Lou Diamond Philips) dicovers his gun and bloodied hankerchief are missing, and the pocket torn from his shirt. However the missing items begin to turn up at murder scenes, setting a stop-watch for Jack to figure out why a stranger would want to set him up for murder. Also starring Kari Wuhrer (clothes on, but there is a nice scene in a shower) and Edooardo Ballerini.

Living hermit-like and existing on a strict alcohol diet, Mudd's world has collapsed. But one day everything changes when a dog named Lucky enters his life. But what makes Lucky dangerous is his ability to get inside Mudd's head and turn him into a serial killer

3 out of 5 stars Maybe it's all in your head.......2006-05-24

Lucky is one of those movies that looks at the bare animalistic nature of things existing in the suburban wasteland, with lots of weird and complicated monologues. They're not bad. In fact I like monologues. Of course these monologues were a bit disturbing, but that's okay. This is a horror movie. The storyline is a bit simplistic: a cartoon writer writes only junk until a talking dog inspires him to greatness, however the talking dog wants him to kill. The movie seems to evolve slightly from this model, as the killings seem to take precedence over the dog or the writer. The other characters, other than his girlfriend, are quite one-dimensional and play into stereotypes. I did get the feeling that we were not only seeing the world through his eyes, but also his perception. Maybe this is all in his head, as a waking nightmare. Maybe it's a rationalization for his own violent sexual fetishes of sadism, torture, and necrophilia. Oh by the way, if you're very sensitive about those kinds of things, you may want to skip this movie. While it is simplistic at times, I still recommend the movie for its psychological bludgeoning.

1 out of 5 stars Bloody Pooper Scooper, or the dog is really quite dead.......2005-06-11

I rented this because it was being touted as some direct to video masterpiece. While it was definitely a direct to video release there certainly wasn't anything masterful about it. We get a story of a loser screen writer doing the bidding of his dog, which involves bloodshed. On paper it sounds good. Execution wise, not so much.

If you're a fan of voice over in movies you should probably check this out, since the majority of the film contains it. Believe it or not crazy people talk to themselves, hell sane people talk to their dogs.

When it comes to cheap Horror movies I'm pretty much a dumb fish, chompin down on anything that moves. More often than not I don't like the taste. Sometimes I end up needing shots.

If you have poor short term memory check this movie out. Hopefully, for your sake, you'll forget all about it.

2 out of 5 stars LUCKY GOES TO THE DOGS.......2005-02-12

LUCKY starts out promising. Michael Emanuel, who also produced, stars as Millard Mudd, a cartoon writer, whose life is going to the dogs (in more ways than one). One fateful night, he runs over a stray dog named Lucky and from that point on, his life changes. One realizes that we're watching the fall of a man into total dementia/insanity, and that the things going on are merely in the man's mind. Clues include the fact that the dog never really "talks"; Mudd hears him. The situations that happen are funny at first, but then the movie descends into really distasteful exploitation, such as Millard making love to the corpse of the delivery girl, and having fantasies about killing or torturing the love of his life. Emanuel is fairly effective, having to carry the whole movie, and Piper Cochrane as Misty has a certain appeal. But this turns out to be one sick movie, that is not redeemed by the fact that it's all purportedly "psychological" in nature. Torturing and raping dead people isn't my idea of entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little movie shot on miniDV.......2004-08-15

Ok, rented this one after hearing about it in Fangoria. Not too bad. Very predictible, but its execution was wonderful. I could of done without some of the talk about necrophilia. But, nonetheless it was a very good dark comedy.

Speaking of Lucky, check out Lucky McGee's "MAY". Excellent movie.

To the person who said that this was negative towards women. Please lighten up and watch Steel Magnolias. There are plenty of movies that are just as negative towards men.

4 out of 5 stars Here Lucky, *whistle*.......2004-07-28

I really did not know what to expect when I rented this bad boy, but having a sick fascination with B/amateur horror I decided to pick it up. The story was so twisted you couldn't help but laugh! But it wouldn't be nearly as enteraining if it wasn't for the dry, and quick wit of the main character and his narrations. His submissive persona and completely oblivious views of his character's slow spiral into dementia are priceless. It reminds me of a twisted version of "The Wonder Years", except in this one Kevin kills Paul and Winnie and buries them in his backyard.

--Tom Keogh
