Describing Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise as an update of the classic Phantom of the Opera doesn't do justice to this demented movie. While De Palma's Hitchcock homages have sometimes led him into dead ends, this rock & roll remake seems to have liberated De Palma's imagination, and the result is weird and funny, with the scruffy underground spirit of the director's early pictures. The Phantom is one Winslow Leach (William Finley), a nerdy songwriter whose "pop cantata" on the subject of Faust is stolen by a freakish, Phil Spector-like rock impresario called Swan (Paul Williams). After getting his head caught in a vinyl-LP compressor, Leach is transformed into a masked creature, haunting Swan's music palace, the Paradise. De Palma proves how nimbly he can establish narrative rhythm: the story moves like a cannon shot, and the musical numbers (especially in the Alice Cooper-like Paradise sequences) are brilliantly cut. The movie seems to predict the Studio 54 scene, MTV, and punk rock--the last, especially, in the figure of Beef, a screeching singer played by the unhinged Gerrit Graham. The songs were written by Paul Williams, that diminutive '70s music icon (he cowrote the Barbra Streisand wet noodle "Evergreen"), and his performance is a reminder of his peculiar, self-spoofing presence: at one point, the preening Swan announces, "You know how I abhor perfection in anyone but myself." Comedy, musical, horror film, '70s artifact--this movie isn't quite definable, and that's what's wonderful about it. --Robert Horton
Description
Composer Winslow Leach (William Finley) is determined to seek revenge on Swan (Williams), an evil record tycoon who steals his pop cantana of the Faust legend to launch his enemy's palace as the mysterious Phantom of the Paradise and continues to plan his gruesome retaliation.

A rock n' roll horror-show courtesy of Brian De Palma.......2007-05-31
What at first glance appears to be some obscure knockoff of the Rocky Horror Picture Show becomes something else entirely when you discover that the film is an early effort from Brian De Palma. De Palma fuses elements of Faust, the Picture of Dorian Gray, 50's musicals, and 70's glam rock. The film is bizarre but utterly enjoyable. Everything about it works from the costumes to the sets to the character's names to the casting. William Finley stars as Winslow Leach. He is a struggling composer who has just written his masterpiece. A 500 page cantata on the legend of Faust. After playing a few bars of it on the piano, very passionately I might add, he attracts the attention of the reclusive and secretive Swan (Paul Williams). Swan is about to open the greatest rock club there has ever been, bigger than 54, and he is calling it the Paradise. There is just one problem, he needs an opening act. His assistant Philbin ( George Memolli) is skeptical that someone as odd looking as Winslow is the right guy to be the face of the Paradise. Swan assures him that he only wants the music that he will take care of Winslow. Philbin meets Winslow in his dressing room and tells him that Swan would like to make him an offer. He also tells him that they might like to make some changes to the cantata, this angers Winslow to the point that he unexpectedly grabs Philbin and slams him against the wall. This is a foreshadowing of how protective Winslow is of his music and how quickly he can turn violent when Swan tries to control him. Winslow meets an aspiring starlet/singer named Phoenix (Jessica Harper) at the auditions Swan is holding at his mansion. Winslow sneaks in and is promptly thrown out by Swan's security guards. Waiting outside for Winslow are two crooked cops whom Swan has paid to plant an ounce of cocaine in a purse thus sending Winslow off to jail and allowing Swan to proceed with changing the cantata and opening the Paradise. However Winslow escapes and goes to confront Swan. He doesn't find him to inflict the damage but he does destroy Swan's factory in the process nearly destroying himself. He gets badly burned in the record press leaving his face hideously deformed. He limps out of the factory and falls into the river prompting newspapers to declare him dead. Winslow did not die though instead he made it to the Paradise where he has fashioned a new outfit and bizarre mask and has dubbed himself the Phantom. Swan has already found a replacement for Phoenix, a demanding punk rocker named Beef (Gerrit Graham). He wants Beef to be the star of the show not Phoenix, this development does not bode well with Winslow and he shows his displeasure by killing the inhabitants of the Paradise. The film is great fun and great to look at. The look and feel is very similar to Rocky Horror as both films share an appreciation of campy films from the 50's and 60's and odd but elaborate musical numbers. De Palma shows off his usual camera mastery in several impressive shots. The film is a cult classic and a midnight movie and should be enjoyed by those genre criteria. De Palma's writing in this one is equally as good as his direction as the script is very clever and funny and he does a good job of developing characters. You feel for Winslow and at the same time enjoy Swan. Great direction and top work from all behind the camera and in front of make the Phantom of the Paradise a film worth checking out.
De Palma's finest hour.......2007-05-12
Top notch songs, great perfs., beautiful to look at. Right up there with "Rocky Horror" and "Hedwig."
Should be a classic.......2007-05-08
I'm rather surprised that this film is not more popular. It's just brilliant. Sure, it's a parody of The Phantom of the Opera and a few other films, but it's outcome has this movie worthy of the same cult status as The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Single Disc Edition). Sure, this DVD lacks any bonus features, but it's what, five bucks?
HILARIOUS AND HORRIFIC.......2007-04-06
From the great mind of Brian De Palma comes the very entertaining and bizarre film "Phantom Of The Paradise".This 1974 cult classic from Brian De Palma is pure film genius. The story is well crafted and the casting in my opinion is terrific. The amazing aspect about this movie is it's not limited to one genre of film making. It has an unusual mix of comedy, horror and part musical and that's what makes it great. The combination of De Palma's imaginative directing and Paul Williams acting and impressive music soundtrack make "Phantom Of The Paradise" a scream to watch. This movie was a box office dud in it's original debut and lurked in the shadows of The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and other films for many years.Fans of this movie will be delighted with the video transfer from 20th Century Fox Studios. The video transfer is presented in it's 1.85:1 Anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio and the image is crisp and clean. It's really too bad that the sound wasn't remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 given the movies awesome soundtrack. My only real complaint is that the DVD lacks bonus material. It would have been nice if 20th Century Fox had approached Brian De Palma to provide some commentary or include cast footage for this release. After all these years I'd love to hear his thoughts on what I believe is an underrated 70's classic. Brian De Palma has given us a number of great films over the years, but it's the hilarious and horrific images of this movie that are forever embedded in my mind.
