Jersey Girl stars Ben Affleck as a workaholic music executive who loses his wife (Jennifer Lopez) in childbirth and has to raise his newborn daughter with the help of his crotchety New Jersey dad (George Carlin). The movie unspools as if writer-director Kevin Smith, normally a highly self-aware filmmaker (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma), set out to put a fresh spin on every cliché he could imagine (parent forced to choose between child and career; parent rushing to attend school performance; etc.)--then forgot to put in the spin. The scenes that aren't lifeless are implausible (Liv Tyler plays the fantasy girl of every awkward boy's dreams). The only real feeling comes from the strong soundtrack. However, Raquel Castro, as the daughter, is an uncanny double for Lopez; when the light plays across Castro's cheekbones just so, you'd swear the casting director simply shrunk Lopez for convenience. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Hollywood favorites Ben Affleck (DAREDEVIL, PAYCHECK, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS) and Liv Tyler (LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, ARMAGEDDON) shine in this heartwarming all-star comedy about a guy who thinks he's lost it all only to discover he's got everything he needs! Ollie (Affleck) is a smooth and successful big-city publicist who has the life he's always wanted -- until things take an unexpected turn and he finds himself an unemployed single father back living with his dad in the suburbs. But just when he thinks his life has hit rock bottom, a sexy, no-nonsense video store clerk (Tyler) enters his life and shows Ollie that sometimes you have to forget who you thought you were and acknowledge what really makes you happy. Also starring Jason Biggs (AMERICAN PIE) -- director Kevin Smith (JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK) has delivered another hit critics are calling one of the year's funniest!
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2007-07-15
I just saw it for the first time, 7-2007. I had tears in my eyes for an hour. Beautiful story. Do another one, continue the story.
sweet without being too syrupy.......2007-02-16
I swear to god, if anyone sniggers when they hear that I spent two hours of my life watching Jersey Girl, I'll ... uh ... well, I'll probly completely understand. But hear me out -- this movie is actually pretty good as far as cotton candy fare goes.
Briefly: widowed dad learns to live and love again. I know, clichéd. But somehow it ends up less syrupy and hammery than you'd expect, even with the dreaded Affleck/Lopez combo starting it out.
This is better than just "Kevin Smith does a chick flick"; it has all of Smith's wit with only one-fifth of the crassness, and it's sweet and light and hopeful. Even Liv Tyler is relatively likeable in Jersey Girl. And of course, it's always fun to play Spot the View Askew Regular.
The Boyfriend's POV (and Long-Standing Kevin Smith fan).......2007-02-02
I put off watching this film for a long time. I'd heard that, while it's a Kevin Smith movie, it's not a Kevin Smith movie, if you get me... so, I didn't want to see it, because I was afraid that it would somehow make me respect Smith less as a filmmaker. I guess I was afraid that, if he made a run-of-the-mill Hollywood romance comedy, it would call his artistic credentials into question and make him into a "sell-out," whatever that means. I didn't want to see Jersey Girl because I'm a Kevin Smith fan.
Well, my fiancee convinced me to watch it with her the other night, and... turns out, it's actually really good. No, it's not the same style of hipper-than-thou dialogue-infused 'indie' flick that Smith is famous for. Yeah, it's a romantic comedy. But it shows off a lot of wit and heart and, if men must watch romantic comedies to please their significant others, then this kind of romantic comedy will fit the bill quite well.
The movie is about a savvy, slick public relations guy (Affleck) whose life is derailed when his wife dies giving birth to his daughter and the strain of it all causes him to lose his job. Moving in with his loving-crumudgeon of a father (Carlin), he finds some joy in raising his kid, becoming a maintenance worker and flirting with the local video-shop girl (Tyler), but deep down he still wants to get back to the New York jet-set life he once had.
Again, not your standard Kevin Smith-fare, but Smith makes it resonate with truth, and fun, and interest, and, in the end, watching this movie didn't make me think less of Smith, but more of him for such a display of versatility.
With the woman you love, or on your own, a very good movie to watch.
Four stars.
Love this movie!!.......2007-01-23
While I don't love Ben Affleck, I loved this movie. Kevin Smith is a great filmmaker because he knows what is a great idea. I loved the little girl in this movie, struggling to identify who she and who her family is. George Carlin is also great in a more serious role. Definitely recommmend this movie!
I don't care I enjoyed this movie!.......2007-01-12
Being a father and also being a Kevin SMith fan, this movie was easy to connect with, I also have a daughter and a big ambition to make movies, it is also something that gets in the way of being a dad. A great movie.

Love this movie..........2007-09-14
Think Pretty Woman except better, less phoney-baloney. Jami Gertz is perfect, just luminous. I love her clothes, her hair and nails, her mannerisms. Her girlfriends are just fab with their own big hair and brassy personalities. I know these people and I like them. The only thing I didn't like was the music; where is Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen? Probably too expensive. Minor detail.
If you like 80s romance movies, you'll love this one.......2007-08-26
So we all know the classic cheesey 80s movies...from the rat pack movies like "Sixteen Candles" to the others like "The Secret of My Success" and "Working Girl." If you're looking for another romantic comedy, this is a true gem from that genre. And yeah, I know it's from the early 90s, but really, let's be honest, sometimes you can't tell the difference. So we all know it's no Oscar/Academy Award winning movie. And maybe it's predictable too. But there is something to be said for a cute movie that just makes you smile. Another plus is that it stars a young Dylan McDermott. He's pretty adorable and yeah, he smiles a lot, but it's all part of what makes this movie endearing. And now, after seeing this movie, I'm suddenly a fan of his. I've seen my share of random 80s flicks both good and bad and this one really surprised me. So take a chance on this one.
jersey girl, a simple, romantic, comedy, love story...it could happen...who knows?.......2007-03-22
personally, this has always been one of my mom & i`s favorite romantic/comedy movies.
yes, maybe, others, will probably NOT feel the same and that is ok.
sometimes, in life and in love, there are those rare strange times and chances when 2 opposite types of people meet in the craziest situations.
(it could happen, speaking from my own personal experiences.)
sometimes, its love at first sight for both.
sometimes, sparks fly for both and chemistry is there.
and sometimes, the sad reality of life and of love is "its love a first sight" for just one side of this situation.
(believe me, it could happen, speaking from my own personal embarrassing experiences.)
sometimes, when that happens, some go for it!
(yes!)
at all crazy cost!
(so embarrassing!)
while some, just let it pass them by.
(yes, sadly but possible...)
in this movie, i just loved it!
(definitely!)
i loved the actors, the movie location and i even love the simple love story, that THIS COULD happen in real life.
once again, i could relate to jami gertz character, with that old saying "love can move mountains".
so, if anyone is looking for just a simple, romantic, comedy love story, try this one, maybe it will make you smile.
i know, whenever my mom & i watch "jersey girl", it makes us smile too.
Jersey.....Jersey Girl Will Make You Proud!.......2007-01-29
For anyone who grew up in "Jersey" and is familiar with the unique cultural aspects of the northeastern part of the state you will absolutely love this movie. The four women who play the "girl" parts are all exceptional in their portrayals of gum poping, tough talking, wise-guy (girls) with Jersey attitudes. If you're a guy from Jersey then you already know that a Jersey girl is the sexiest girl there ever was to roam the planet. All these girls.....albeit huge hair, tacky cloths, sewer mouths, and even a bit over weight all exude sex appeal. It's all very remarkable. Another "exciting" aspect is watching all the background B roll and scenery that all but makes you want to be sure you have your toll change ready before you get to the next scene. You'll see White Castles, Route 4, the turnpike, and if you really look close you will see the absolute "King Of Jersey" Vegas Lounge Legend Pat Galo making a cameo appearance. If you're from Jersey that alone is worth the price of the DVD! Jersey Girl is a must have for any loyal and dyed in the wool Jersey Girl. What am I saying.....this film is a must for anybody who has an ounce of romance in their heart. Jersey.....Jersey Girl Will Make You Proud!
Cheesy and Sweet.......2007-01-25
The movie has an obvious plot, but it's still a sweet story. Who wouldn't want to fall in love with the man who's luxury car they just wrecked...especially when that man is Dylan McDermott?!? Hello!
The Jersey characters are a bit over the top, but Jamie Gertz wore her big hair with pride.
It's a bit hard to believe at first, but you gotta have hope when it comes to finding love. Rent this one for the sappy romantic in you or, at the very least, to glimpse Mr. McDermott's bare behind! Woohoo!
Product Description
To the horror of prudes everywhere, American Pie 2 is even funnier than its popular predecessor, pushing the R rating with such unabashed ribaldry that you'll either be appalled or surprised by its defiant celebration of the young-adult male libido. Females will be equally shocked or delighted, because like American Pie this appealing, character-based comedy puts the women in control while offering a front-row view of horny guys in all their dubious glory. Which is to say, American Pie is mostly about sex--or, to be more specific, breasts, genitalia, "potential" lesbianism, blue silicone sex toys, crude methods of seduction, "the rule of three" (just watch the movie), a shower of "champagne," phone sex, tantric sex, and, oh yeah... superglue.
In the case of college freshman Jim (Jason Biggs), performance anxiety plagues his upcoming reunion with sexy Czech exchange student Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth), but his buddies from American Pie have a solution: rent a Lake Michigan beach house for the summer, throw wild parties to lure the local "hotties," and score big-time. Beach Party this ain't: blessed with a complete cast reunion from AP1 (including Eugene Levy as Jim's dad), this sequel is anything but innocent, and with the exception of drugs (which are conspicuously absent), pretty much anything goes. The gags are almost nonstop, and director J.B. Rogers (recovering from his debut debacle Say It Isn't So) handles them with laudable precision, allowing his young cast (particularly Biggs, who epitomizes comedic good sportsmanship) to run with lines that most people wouldn't dare utter aloud. The result is a liberating and eminently good-natured comedy that needn't apologize for its one-track mind
