Amazon.com essential video

Edward D. Wood Jr. was an actor writer-director-producer, occasionally in drag, who combined meager bursts of talent with an undying optimism to create some of the most bizarrely memorable "B" movies to ever come out of Tinseltown. Though Wood died in obscurity as an alcoholic in 1978, his films have been considered cult classics for years. He is consistently voted the worst director who ever lived. You would think this an odd subject, but director Tim Burton harnesses the undying hopefulness that made Wood such a character. Shot in black and white, just like Wood's creations, this stylized, witty production captures the poetic absurdity of Wood's films and his unconventional life. Burton's recreation of Wood's wonderfully awful Plan 9 from Outer Space looks much better than the original low-budget quickie. Burton tackled an extremely strange subject matter for a biopic, but Wood is presented as naive almost to the point of delusion, so the story works. The pace sags in the middle, as the weirdness starts to wear thin, but Depp proves himself an adroit actor, even while wearing angora and a blonde wig. Wood's unconventional repertoire company is faithfully reproduced, including an Academy Award-winning Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi. Landau is pathetic, droll, and charismatic as the elderly junkie who made his last screen appearances in Wood's films. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars HERE'S INFO ON THE SPECIAL FEATURES.......2007-09-14

WRITTEN BY Mark Bourne (bourne@dvdjournal.com) AND POSTED BY ME FYI

Buena Vista Home Video's long-delayed DVD release of Ed Wood makes the wait worthwhile. The source-print and anamorphic transfer keep the film's beautiful black-and-white cinematography right on target. For such a recent A-list film, the print shows a surprising amount of minor speckling, a little dirt, and some wear. The flaws are not show-stoppers at all, though videophiles aching for "pristine" are forewarned.

The chief attraction among the extras is the informative and entertaining commentary audio with Tim Burton, Martin Landau, writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, cinematographer Stefan Czapsky, and costume designer Colleen Atwood. It's only occasionally scene-specific, and everyone except the two writers was recorded individually. All participants contribute well as they chronicle the project from its inception through its development and shooting. Burton is chatty and sounds quite pleased to talk about Wood's films ("like weird dreams" that are almost "poetic" in their badness), Wood himself, and what attracted Burton to him. Burton and the writers laud Depp's performance. We get Landau's thoughts on characterization, plus good summaries on the casting and the unexpected technical challenges posed by shooting a modern film in black-and-white. Alexander and Karaszewski, talking together in the most scene-specific segments, separate the film's facts from their fictionalizations, and relate what started them thinking about Ed Wood and his passion for movie-making.

The Bonus Material menu begins with a Music Video choreographed by Toni Basil ("Hey Mickey") and co-directed by Burton. This Ed Wood A-Go-Go oddity uses Howard Shore's main title music straight up and gives it to a Vampira-like, hair-swirling dancing girl on a Woodian graveyard set. She's accompanied by period-cheesy video effects and clips from Wood's films and Burton's feature.

"LET'S SHOOT THIS F#*%@r!" Not your typical behind-the-scenes featurette. With no post-production gloss and no talking heads, we get instead long home-movie takes of Burton at work with Depp, Landau, and others shooting scenes such as the Plan 9 recreation and Landau's wet rubber-octopus fight. It's scored with Shore's title theme. While on the set costumed in his "seven veils" drag garb, Depp steps up to the camera for an impromptu intro and closing. Just raw footage with no promotional rah-rah built in, this one's a welcome change from the usual over-produced "making-of" marketing fluff.

"THE THEREMIN" Composer Howard Shore gives us a primer on his score and how he used the fascinating 1920s electronic instrument that provided the ghostly oooo-weee-ooo vibe of so many 1950s sci-fi films. Theremin expert Mark Segal demonstrates how the instrument is played by moving your hands through the space between two metal rods.

"MAKING BELA" Here's a tribute to Lugosi from Ed Wood's two Oscar-winners. Actor's actor Martin Landau discusses his studious approach to the character of Bela Lugosi. Intercut with Landau, makeup supervisor Rick Baker tells us why he would have worked on this "labor of love" for free if he had to. We also get footage of the real Bela and a peek into Landau's dressing room while the layers of makeup are being applied to his face.

"PIE PLATES OVER HOLLYWOOD" Production designer Tom Duffield hosts this look through his production sketches and Polaroids. He addresses the difficulties of shooting in black-and-white with enough depth to make this extra useful for burgeoning art directors.

Five DELETED SCENES Not much was lost in these cuts, with two just trims from the octopus-stealing scene. Footage of Bunny's dirgeful parade with his mariachi band while singing "Que Sera Sera" through the meat-packing plant might have been an off-script throwaway, as there's no hint about where it might have appeared in the film. Other cuts give us more material on Wood and Lugosi, plus Eddie having dinner with Tor Johnson's disapproving family.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing opus in praise of optimism and hope.......2007-09-10

Yeah, I admit I give five stars to movies that don't deserve it. But I do it because I like them that much! This movie deserves every star it gets. This is another one of those movies that is practically flawless. This is not only an homage to Ed Wood, but an incredibly entertaining and well casted movie. Johnny Depp is amazing as Ed Wood and Sarah Jessica Parker is the prettiest I've ever seen her.

The movie begins just before Ed makes his first movie while he is a theater director. I don't claim to be an Ed Wood historian so I just have to take their word for it and everything else in the movie. When cross dressing Wood sees that a film about a sex change operation is about to be made, he knows he's the man for the job. Along the way he recruits Bela Lugosi, the first of many strange, eccentric, and otherwise offbeat characters he will star in his films.

When the script is penned he has not written a film about sex change so much as he has written a film describing his life as a transvestite! The shock of learning about her husband's transvestitism along with the fact that he has put their lives up on the screen has his girlfriend fuming. There is a huge strain on their relationship as things progress. She tries her best to remain supportive over looking each trespass, but this gets increasingly difficult.

What I like best about this film is the lesson it tries to convey, that you have to follow your passion no matter the obstacles and set-backs that get in your way. Ed does this and is incredibly rewarded in the end. Also rewarding is the experience of seeing Ed traversing Hollywood with his odd entourage consisting of Bela Lugosi, the massive wrestler Tor Johnson, Vampire, and the rest.

I have seen most of Ed Woods films, but they are far too bad for my tastes. And I watch some garbage films, I just finished the DaVinci Code! The language is a bit strong in area which prevents this from being a film that you can enjoy with your kids, but ultimately I've seen a lot worse.

5 out of 5 stars Weirdos Do A Good Film About A Weirdo.......2007-09-09

It's appropriate that Tim Burton would direct this and even more appropriate that Johnny Depp would play the lead character as this story profiles an unusual subject: the worst director of films, perhaps, in Hollywood history....and one of its strangest characters.

As interesting as the story is, I found the black-and-white photography to be the best aspect of the film, but Burton excels in visuals, so that's no surprise. Depp was hilarious as "Ed Wood." The eternal optimistic attitude and silly smile on his face in this film always makes me laugh and actually is inspiring in parts.

The most dramatic figure is Bela Lugosi, played memorably by Martin Landau, who deservedly won many awards for this performance. What a tragic figure.

A couple of things were offensive to me in here, but I'll just mention one: the cheap shot against Baptists, who are made to look like meddling fools, something Hollywood loves to portray when it comes to any Christian character, Protestant or Catholic.

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-08-08

This movie is very good, if a little difficult to take because it's pretty frenetic, but that's true to how Ed Wood really was. Johnny Depp is his usual brilliant self as Ed Wood. My 18-year-old bought this DVD right after we caught the movie on television, and it's one of her Top 10. (I know, this surprised me too.)

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, ghoulishly funny...Depp and Landau are superb..........2007-07-29

Absolutely brilliant film on the bizarre and quirky cross-dressing filmmaker Ed Wood, played with boyish enthusiasm by JOHNNY DEPP in one of his most offbeat roles. He's the anchor who grounds the film in all its believable foolishness.

Equally skillful are all the surrounding performances, including MARTIN LANDAU (who deservedly won a Supporting Role Oscar), BILL MURRAY, who does amazing things with an underwritten role as a man eager to change his gender, JEFFREY JONES as Criswell, the Magician, and VINCENT D'ONOFRIO as Orson Welles.

But it's the caring relationship between Depp and Landau that defines the comic genius of the film and gives it heart. Both are extremely moving and adept at showing the respect and regard they had for each other when their world seemed to be falling apart. The story doesn't flinch in showing Lugosi's fall from grace with his addiction to morphine and other drugs that eventually took his life.

A near perfect recreation of the '50s Hollywood scene with its low budget studio settings, wisely photographed in the B&W manner of most of the Lugosi thrillers. Entertaining and genuinely funny, moving and absorbing all the way through.

Summing up: One of Tim Burton's best directing jobs. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars The Wire; Seasons 1-3; Excellent!.......2007-06-20

Having heard a lot about The Wire, but not having the chance to watch it over the period of time that it was on HBO, I decided to make the 'jump off' and buy all three seasons.

From episode one I was sucked into the action, suspense and drama of The Wire. I see it as a cross between the movie "Boyz in the hood" and the "Law & Order" series. I spent marathon nights watching episode after episode 'til the end.

Waiting anxiously now for Season 4.

5 out of 5 stars Wire - Amazing.......2007-03-09

One of the best series I've seen. The details to bring this as close to real life is amazing. The fascinating part is how each season and characters are interlinked. I am waiting now for the Fourth Season DVD to come soon.

The best series, I've seen from HBO. Its good to go and play the game on HBO website as well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars DARYL is a Great movie with polictical undertones.......2007-03-20

I saw this movie many years ago and just watched it again. The technology and plot were just as refreshing as when I first saw it.

It seems strange the world has not progressed beyond this point, but the military is still in charge and there are still victims of its struggle for power. D.A.R.Y.L.(Digital Analyzing Robotic Youth Life form) is a young boy played by Bret Oliver (Never ending story, Cocoon) who was created as an experiment. The intent was to create the perfect soldier, but it backfired and Daryl became a "Real Boy" with extraordinary powers. With the help he escapes his Laboratory home and I given to a foster family while his "real" parents are found. They fall in love with him but the military want him "terminated" and he is recaptured. His captures are surprised by his growth and human abilities so that save him and he is returned to his loving family and friends. A story of intrigue, love, compassion, sacrifice and friendship well worth having.

A great movie and a must have for collectors.

1 out of 5 stars My Review on the first robot movie !.......2007-03-15

Corny science fiction less favorite of mine not even in the top 10 !
Afi took the idea on a better approache of this movie about a boy robot !

4 out of 5 stars Great family movie.......2007-02-09

D.A.R.Y.L has always been one of our favorite family movies. It shows that love doesn't have to be about your own biological children but also about children of your heart....even if they are little robots (lol).

4 out of 5 stars A machine becomes human when you can't tell the difference anymore.......2006-11-11

I like this film. It is a delightful story of an android boy who when exposed to humanity becomes one of us. It explores the naivety of sheltered youth coming of age and trying to learn the things of the world, from a different point of view. Touching and emotional. A very good "feel good" movie that is sure to hold your interest as you watch with anticipation as to how the plot will unfold. Very good casting and acting, film quality and sound. A good family film. You will be taken back a bit to your own youth as you watch D.A.R.Y.L. learn about love, affection, the basics of human emotion and acceptance in a world that is very much alien to him. I recommend this film whole heartedly.

5 out of 5 stars "what's a hooker?".......2005-12-03

Sure it's about as syrup heavy on the compassion scale as an 80's movie can get, but where else will you find such an incredible story of humanity as in D.A.R.Y.L. ?

Government builds a robot child different than the cyborgs we've seen before. This is not a terminator type robot with a metal endoskeleton covered by flesh, this is a true human boy with a computer for a brain.
One of the research scientists sets Daryl free in the woods and there is where the adventure truly begins. He is taken in by a group home for boys and then sent to live with foster parents until someone comes to claim him. Daryl meets the boy next door, nicknamed Turtle and starts to understand what friendship is all about. His foster dad, played by Laverne & Shirley's "Lenny" Mike Mckean in a completely normal dad role, teaches Daryl baseball while Turtle's sister gets him into video games. His foster mom is surprised to find his incredible talent at piano playing and the fact that he irons his own clothes. It's all going so well that you just know trouble is on the horizon.
The other two researchers on the project show up to claim their "son" Daryl and bring him back to the lab to study his memory banks on what he's learned. Plus, even more grim is the fact the military wants Daryl to go to the scrapheap. The deadline is on to save this all too human child from being the target of the military's junk pile. The film then becomes an action filled thrill ride that is truly unforgettable.

What makes this film rise above it's all too Hollywood heavy handed emotionalism is the one fact that is inescapable about Daryl: (played perfectly by Barrett Oliver) He really IS human, and can grow up just as a normal boy with a human brain can. This movie is still just as enjoyable to watch as it was when it hit theaters in the mid 80s. Anytime I am asked about a movie with family values to the hilt, true compassion and adventure without talking down to kids, this is the movie I recommend. 6 stars

Description

Edward D. Wood Jr. (1924-1978) remains one of the best-remembered, most talked-about directors in the history of cinema. He is a certifiable legend (well, he was "certifiable" anyway). This fun and fascinating collection throws a spotlight on the man whose work personifies the phrase "so bad it's good."

Here on two diabolical discs are six feature-length films written by and/or directed by and/or starring the unforgettable (or is it unforgivable?) Ed Wood. Plus the original documentary The Ed Wood Story, including exclusive interviews with such luminaries as Dolores Fuller, Bela Lugosi Jr., Martin Laudau and Johnny Depp, among others.

Disc One

GLEN OR GLENDA? (1953) - The cross-dressing classic that started it all, with Wood as a triple threat - writer, director, and star, along with future Plan 9 co-stars Bela Lugosi, Dolores Fuller, Lyle Talbot, and Conrad Brooks.

JAIL BAIT (1954) - Ed Wood goes film noir with this cautionary tale of a naïve young man who is lured into a life of crime. Dolores Fuller and Lyle Talbot co-star once again, and future Hercules Unchained star Steve Reeves has his first speaking role in this film as a police lieutenant.

BRIDE OF THE MONSTER (1955) - One of Wood's most-celebrated...er...creations, with Bela Lugosi as a mad scientist who kidnaps people and tries to turn them into super-men using atomic power. Tor Johnson and Paul Marco make their Ed Wood debuts as Lobo and Kelton the Cop, dis-respectively.

THE VIOLENT YEARS (1956) - Wood penned the script for this good-girls-gone-bad tale, helmed by veteran western director William Morgan. In something of a switch from Glen or Glenda, the girls dress up as boys in order to commit their crimes! Timothy Farrell of Glen or Glenda and Jail Bait is the only Ed Wood returnee here.

Disc Two

NIGHT OF THE GHOULS (1959) - Wood is back behind the megaphone again as the director and writer of this strange tale that is arguably worse than Plan 9 From Outer Space (if such a thing is possible). Western star Kenne Duncan is Dr. Acula (get it?), a phony spiritualist who conducts fake séances. Tor Johnson and Paul Marco reprise their perennial roles as Lobo and Kelton the Cop.

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959) - Wood's piece de resistance (or piece of something). The grand-prize winner of so many so-bad-it's-good lists, this horror/sci-fi curiosity has something to do with evil (and kinda bitchy) aliens who come to earth and resurrect the dead, using these vampire-zombies to help them take over the world. Starring Wood favorites Lyle Talbot, Tor Johnson, Paul Marco, Bela Lugosi, and Tom Mason (Wood's wife's chiropractor) as Bela's double (since Lugosi died before principal photography had commenced).

BONUS FEATURE: The Ed Wood Story - An affectionate look at E.W. featuring clips and interviews with those who knew and admired him, including Dolores Fuller, Johnny Depp, and Martin Landau.

Approx. 7-1/2 hrs.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Single Ed Wood Collection.......2007-09-12

What is there really to say? You get six of his most important movies in reasonable video quality for under $10. This is a great alternative if you can't afford the box from Rhino. There is that small logo at the bottom (public domain video sellers are notorious for stealing each other's video sources, thus the "watermark") but it is not a distraction like the ones from some video companies. A great buy and essential to any movie collection.

5 out of 5 stars Bad is good.......2007-08-23

After watching Tim Burton's Ed Wood movie, I was intrigued so I had to see it for myself... and it's true, he was a terrible writer,director,producer... but in a way that was actually true in that moment in time, without technology and money... probably now he could be as good as Burton or viceversa..

The Ed Wood movies are indeed bad, but his ideas and the plot of his stories are ingenious, creative and critic. In Glen or Glenda he dared to address a topic that even now can be controversial.

This is a fine collection with 6 of his more representative movies (best movies?), in 2 dvd. Also includes interviews with Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Dolores Fuler, Vampira and others.

Really, the movies are so bad they are good...or at least what I expected

4 out of 5 stars A bargain or over-priced?.......2007-08-10

At under ten bucks any collection of six movies should be considered a steal. But Ed Wood could very well be the exception. Which will mostly depend on whether or not you enjoy a good bad film or not. In my case I have to say it was well worth the price. I find that Wood's ultra-low budget and camp works best when he's doing horror or science fiction with Plan 9 and Bride of the Monster being my favorites. Glen or Glenda is one of the most surreal films I've ever seen with Lugosi playing God, a transvestite, loads of stock footage, and an appearance by the devil. The Violent Years and Jail Bait are explorations on Juvenile Delinquency a theme Wood seemed to touch upon a number of times in his career. What it all boils down to is- are you an Ed Wood fan or not? If you are then you should own this collection. If you've seen the Tim Burton film and enjoyed it then I would definitely recommend it. If your looking for something on the level of Citizen Kane or Lawrence of Arabia, then you are very, very off track. My only minor complaint about the DVD itself is someone thought it necessary to put one of those little icons in the lower right hand corner that says 'The Ed Wood Collection' like we're going to forget what we're watching. We may be Ed Wood fans, but we're not stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Passport Video got the message!.......2007-04-15

Okay, i was really rough on a previous title by this company because of their highly aggravating huge logo that appeared in the right hand corner of the screen, it was so distracting i couldn't concentrate on the film. This title is different, so far i have not seen that notorious huge logo, i did manage to catch a glimpse of of a small opaque logo saying " Ed Wood", but it was so slight and lasted only a second, it didn't bother me in the least. This is a great value and the quality of the prints are wonderful, great deal, and nice packaging too, no flippers!!! Great deal Passport, hopefully you re-do Bela Lugosi 15 Frightful Films!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the worst .......2007-02-14

This is probably the greatest collection of the worst movies of all times. All are the creations from the mind of Ed Wood. Most people may remember the movie of Ed Wood's life with Johnny Depp as the title role. While that was played for laughs and some pathos, the real story was not too far away. Ed Wood had a true passion for making movies. He just did not make good ones. These are all fun to watch and have a laugh at, but understand that the intent was serious movie making. It might be somewhat sad to watch the declining years of Bela Lugosi, though. Get this set to watch and have fun with.

Oliver Stone's controversial drama about the Nixon years in the White House stars Anthony Hopkins in a genuinely great performance as the scandal-plagued president. The film attempts to wed suggestions of Nixon's formative experiences as a boy to his political connections with shady movers and shakers and finally to his self-destructive tenure in the Oval Office. The Watergate scandal is revisited rather impressionistically--it may be hard for viewers who weren't alive then to get a sense of what the crisis was about. The parade of stars playing figures in Nixon's orbit--J.T. Walsh as John Ehrlichman, James Woods as Bob Haldeman, David Hyde Pierce as John Dean, etc.--is fun if a tad distracting. Joan Allen got a well-deserved Oscar nomination as First Lady Pat Nixon, and Hopkins got one as well. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Why Not be Honest? .......2007-08-13

I gave this movie two stars because Oliver Stone is a brilliant filmmaker with a high level of talent, but I simply cannot understand why he had to be so dishonest about his subject. There was so much wrong with Richard Nixon that there is little justification for making things up. Anthony Hopkins, a magnificent actor, gave a superlative performance and played Nixon exactly the way the Director undoubtedly wanted him to--as a psychopathic, blithering, hard-drinking ape. This is totally unfortunate as he could have made an excellent work of art from this story. Many of the lines attributed to the principal players--like Sorvino's Kissinger saying that had Nixon been loved as a child things would have gone differently--are so fantastic as to boggle the mind. Nixon's relationship with his wife may have been one of the few things the man did right in his life, but Stone infuses their bond with total torment. Why he did these things I cannot fathom. I just finished a biography on the 37th President and his financial shenanigans alone would have been enough to base a movie on. The guy was a big-spending liberal, paranoid, and disloyal. In short, he was an embarrassment to both the right and the left. Why not simply tell the truth? That would be demeaning enough but what we have here is not a man but a total caricature of one. The depiction is so patently ridiculous that it cannot even effectively function as propaganda, as, to most sensible people, it is simply unbelievable. What a waste.

5 out of 5 stars Whoda Thunk It?.......2007-08-03

I never would have imagined that Anthony Hopkins could pull off a convincing Nixon, well color me surprised! Both he and Joan Allen (playing Pat Nixon) deserved their Oscar nominations - Allen should have won!

Oliver Stone is polarizing, not always honest in his portrayals and always out to bite the bullet in some capacity, but he's a great filmmaker. The fictional aspect of JFK hurt the film, mostly because Stone presented them as truth's. But the question of truth behind his portrayal of Nixon adds to the film, Nixon's presidency and Nixon himself is already a work of fiction that historians are still trying to figure out. But Stone focuses more on the downfall of Nixon as a man rather than the politics that came with the man.

Great film, my favorite Stone film, I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Tricky Dick meets Tricky Oliver.......2007-05-04

I like this movie. Nixon did some good things like ending the draft the clean air and water act. This movie mostly shows Nixons bad side Anthony Hopkins does a good job one highlight is when Nixon goes to the lincolin memorial and talks to antiwar proteters. Some of Oliver Stones insinuations are not believable i doubt Nixon met with JFK conspiriitors. Nixon for all its faults has good cinematography and is likley the best Nixon movie well ever see.

1 out of 5 stars great film, horrific dvd.......2007-04-07

This is a review of the 2-disc edition of the film. The extra 28 mins of
footage in Nixon has been mainly culled from the deleted scenes.
These scenes are shown in the extras and are of good quality.

What do the characters who produced this dvd do? They simply tagged
on these scenes where they belong in the theatrical version of
the film, but the quality of this extra tagged footage makes the
Zapruder film of Kennedy's assassination look like a fully remastered
digital film.

One wonders if Oliver Stone knows what they've done?

The film on disc 1 alternates between clear image quality to VHS like
images when the extra footage comes on. This is not only shocking
in the 21st century with the right technology available ("Zoolander' has
better overall image quality than this film on this dvd), but the film
isn't even in an anamorphic transfer.

It's unethical for the studios to sell such products because
it really is a way of cheating the public. Hope there will be
no plausible deniability and stonewalling here by them: don't buy this.

Send the message to the studios that they should get their act
together and release a proper cleaned up digitally remastered
full version of the film, in an anamorphic transfer.

Otherwise they should be impeached.

1 out of 5 stars What?! Not Anamorphic?!.......2007-04-04

I was ready to order this great movie based on that it's supoosed to be a "Collectors Edition"; fortunately I happened to catch the comment from AP DUPIN from France (these are the really useful comments, Thanks AP!) that the transfer for this version is not anamorphic. Are you kidding? It's the 21st century, widescreen TV's are here! Non-anamorphic DVDs should be clearly marked as NON ANAMORPHIC. At this stage of DVD development, Widescreen Version should imply "Enhanced for 16X9 TVs", unfortunately it doesn't, so widescreen owners should make sure of what they're getting before buying. I just wish that people would include more comments about the quality and characteristics of the DVD itself along with the "artistic" review. In the meantime, I'm passing on this "Collector's Edition"(?) until someone lightens up and gives this movie the DVD treatment it deserves. The movie: 5 Stars; this DVD version: 1 Star

5 out of 5 stars One Hell of a collection..........2007-08-31

The older ones were far better, than the more recent ones.

I could end my review here, but it would be unfair, considering the effort made to put this collection together.
So let's start at the beginning:

1. "Air Force" (1943) - B&W - 124 min.
starring John Garfield and Gig Young, is a simple tale of a crew of a Flying Fortress struggling their way from "The Day of Infamy" through the entire Pacific War. (Watch the B-17 closely, it was a true Flying Fortress and alas was lost in the process of fighting that war!);

2. "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" (1944) - B&W - 139 min.
Who doesn't remember Spencer Tracy in this one, together with Van Johnson and Robert Walker? This too, is based on a true story of WWII, but this time we're talking about a B-25 "Mitchell" crew and its deeds that led to the first bombing of the Capital of Japan.

3. "Command Decision" (1948) - B&W - 112 min.
with Clark Gable at the helm and based on a stage play, comes through from a different perspective. What do Commanders do, when it comes to gambling with people's lives (in this case Bomber Pilots and Crews), when the stakes are high and the mission is key for victory or defeat?
Assisting Mr. Gable (who himself was an Air Force Captain and flew real missions, hence knows what he's talking about...) are Walter Pidgeon, again Van Johnson, Brian Donlevy and Charles Bickford.

4. "Hell to Eternity" (1960) - B&W - 132 min.
The story of a man, raised in an American-Japanese family, confronted with the War in the Pacific. Based on a true story, this is the tale of a man facing prejudice from both sides and who manages to win his internal struggle by even capturing, single-handedly, hundreds of Japanese Soldiers. Incredible but true!

5. "36 Hours" (1964) - B&W - 115 min.
A "What If..." movie, starring a powerful James Garner. We are in 1950, the war is over and the lead Character wakes from a Coma in an American Military Hospital. He suffers from Amnesia, he can't recall anything.
Only that we are not in 1950, but rather in 1944, in a mock-up Hospital built by German Intelligence and the setting has carefully been prepared in order to find out where the Allies will finally land.
More than a true War Movie, this is far more a Spy Thriller, and tightly knit at that, so well told it is almost believable as a true story.
These are 36 Hours you won't easily forget.
Together with Mr. Garner appear actors of the caliber of Rod Taylor and Eva Marie Saint, together with Werner Peters as a Gestapo Man (an actor I love to hate).

All DVD transfers are clean and the sound although mostly in 2.0 channel Mono, is sharp and clear.
This is a very interesting Collection, even from a purely analytical standpoint. I must compliment the people at Warner's for having chosen 5 very significant movies out of dozens others and having offered them in this very reasonably priced set.
If more, of the same quality were produced, I am sure people would flock to buy them.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected collection........2007-08-23

I have been trying for some time to get copies of some of these films. I have not played all of them yet, I am savouring the moment. So far they have all been of excellent quality, and thoughly enjoyable. My only query is, is there a Volume 1?. If so where can I get a set?

1 out of 5 stars World War 2 Collection, Vol.2........2007-08-13

I tried to watch the Movie,s of Collection 2.However I was disapointed. The Films did not have any sound. If I had known that, I would have not ordered them. That was a waste of my money. Sincerely, Horst Herting

2 out of 5 stars Should have bought single selections.......2007-08-06

I wanted Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and always enjoyed Air Force and Command Decision, so the package seemed like a bargain. Wrong! None of the selections have scene selection. If you wish to see a selected portion of the movie, you have to run through the entire film. I had seen the other three selections and I wouldn't have bothered to buy them individually. I now have Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, but it is a cut rate DVD and not worth the price I paid.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2007-06-15

Some of these may have been available before now, but none in a WWII set that includes shorts and cartoons from the period. Pick any two you like and they are worth the price. "Command Decision" with Clark Gable as General Casey, a serious officer commanding a bomber group in England, is wonderfully realistic. "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" with Spencer Tracy as Jimmy Doolittle leading the first bomb raid on Japan is excellent. The others are just bonus as far as I'm concerned and a very good one at that. "The Hill" is a good military prisoner movie with Sean Connery as a prisoner. "36 Hours" with James Garner is good espionage movie. Air Force is resonably decent account of a B-17 crew that witnessed Pearl Harbor starring John Ridgely. "Hell to Eternity" with Jeffrey Hunter and David Janssen is about Hispanic boy raised by Japanese-Americans and fought for United States. Fans of WWII movies should enjoy the set. I recommend it. Especially for a Fathers Day gift.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is so laugh-out-loud funny that Indecision 2004--which could have been a dated recap of a time many would rather forget--is instead a hilarious time capsule of the follies and foibles of the 2004 presidential election. What also helps is that many of the issues being lampooned, such as the Iraq war, are still in the news in 2005. The 10 episodes included in the three-disc set are the four reporting on the Democratic National Convention, the four from the Republican National Convention, the episode following the first Bush-Kerry debate, and the hourlong election-night episode, subtitled "Prelude to a Recount." The Daily Show mimics the format of a news program, with Stewart as the anchor and his troupe of "senior correspondents/analysts"--Stephen Colbert, Rob Corddry, Samantha Bee, and Ed Helms--filing their "reports" from the field. Stewart is always quick to dismiss his show as "fake news," but an increasing number of people have taken to the Comedy Central staple as the way to get their news. Political news is mostly sound bites anyway, so Stewart piles the video clips together at their most incongruous or contradictory, then follows up with a wisecrack or a marvelously deadpan look of disbelief. As further proof of its impact, The Daily Show won a 2005 Peabody Award for electronic media excellence for its "satire that deflates pomposity on an equal opportunity basis." (Stewart admitted during the campaign that he himself was voting for Kerry, and his audience is very anti-Bush, but he takes the opportunity to skewer anyone who deserves it.) He also attracts a number of "legitimate" guests. Appearing on these episodes are Ted Koppell, Joe Biden, Chris Matthews (shortly after he'd been challenged to a duel by Zell Miller), Al Sharpton on election night, and a wry John McCain not looking like the combative party zealot that had appeared at the convention podium the night before.

In addition to the 10 episodes, the three-DVD set has more reports by Colbert (whose survey of Democratic minority groups has something to offend anyone), Corddry, Bee, and Helms. There's also John Edwards's 2003 announcement of his presidential candidacy on The Daily Show, the Schoolhouse Rock! spoof about midterm elections, a surprisingly musical four-correspondent rendition of the national anthem, and other lunacy. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Looking forward to 2008!!!.......2007-08-06

Okay, the 2008 United States Presidential Elections are more than a year away and it looks like there is no escaping it no matter how hard you try but despite the political upheaval of our country. The 2004 presidential election coverage was handled with style, slickness, and humor by Jon Stewart, Stephen COlbert, Samantha Bee, Rob Corddry, Ed Helms and their guests like Hardball's Chris Matthews, Ted Koppel, Senator John MCCain, and others. I love how they present the two hosting cities of Boston and New York City. It's kind of funny how New York City is categorized as the home of Greenwich Village, moral decay, Harlem, Spanish Harlem and English as a third language and hosting the whoops, The Republican Convention. While Boston hosted the Democratic convention which boasts liberal values like same sex marriages and abortions for everyone. You can't help thinking that the two cities should have been switched. Corddry visits his hometown of Boston. Stewart doesn't have to room with Boston University students. Stephen Colbert is always hilarious as well as Samantha Bee, Rob Corddry, Ed Helms, and others. Who can forget the Zell Miller incident at the Republican Convention challenging Chris Matthews to a dual. I keep reminiscing of the Saturday Night Live sketches with Chris Mattews and Zell Miller. My sister who lives and works in London has missed the Daily Show and COlbert REport so she got this DVD package.

5 out of 5 stars 3 years on...........2007-04-30

This DVD brings back a lot of fond memories of the Daily Show, with half the cast no longer there. Rob's segments on life in Boston are hilarious. The usual dissection of political life is there and is always entertaining.

The opportunity to have these 8 full episodes [4 from each convention] is great and the bonus disc as well is brilliant. I hope Comedy Central can come up with some other similar-themed packages as well from this era.

5 out of 5 stars You'll dig this completely if you love the Daily Show.......2007-02-21

I am a huge fan of the Daily Show, and for my money, no one can beat Jon Stewart at political satire. I bought this right after the 2004 elections and it was a great collection for all the fun they provided-lies, flip-flops and open bloopers.

This takes it a steap ahead with candid interviews, and pulling gags on some famous senators. Definitely a must have if you love political satire.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!.......2006-12-17

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a family member, and I just had to pick up a copy for myself! Jon Stewart and company are just brilliant--if you don't laugh at this DVD, you are either comatose or presently sitting on Bill O'Reilly's lap!

4 out of 5 stars a turd of liberty being squeezed out through the colon of independence........2006-09-30

i live in sydney, australia and know very little about the machinations of u.s politics, but i do know from bill hicks , al franken , mike moore to a lesser extent and now john stewart, that it is ripe for parody.
this 3 disc set was for the most part pretty hilarious stuff, the comic timing of jon stewart is impeccable, i loved his appearances on larry sanders many years back, and he's just as sharp today.
his regular daily show episodes periodically appear on sbs (the cultural intelligent channel here in sydney...the same channel that shows "oz" and "queer as folk") but i'd never seen these before.

i'd love to see al franken and jon stewart join forces, man that would be something else.

but i have to say, the line that stephen colbert says at the republican party convention, when he's squeezing through a throng of people "boy , it's tight in here,.i feel like a turd of liberty being squeezed out through the colon of independence" is the hardest i've laughed in years.

stephen colbert is pure comic genius, as is mr stewart.

Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), An Officer and a Gentleman proves to be a no-brainer date movie. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars An Officer and a Gentleman Delivers Old Fasioned Romance.......2007-09-02

"An Officer and a Gentleman" is hands down one of the most romantic films to come out in the 90's. Though the premise is one often seen from Hollywood, "Officer" is a rich and often sad romantic journey filled with raw emotions and powerful performances by everyone involved. It is truly a well written (Douglas Day Stewart), well directed story (Taylor Hackford) with an all-star cast and it proves it!

Zach Mayo, played by Richard Gere, is an adorably rebellious, often charming, and cocky Navy brat who enters the Naval Academy with hopes of become a pilot. Almost immediately, he clashes with drill Sgt. Foley, his immediate commanding officer played by Louis Gossett, Jr.. While learning about teamwork, friendship, and fitting in, his life is rapidly complicated by a local factory worker, Paula, (played by Academy Award Winner Debra Winger) looking to find an attractive young officer with a promising future and a way out of town. The film alternates between Gere's progress at the Academy, his ability to be a loyal friend and his blossoming romance. For a while it seems unlikely that either will work out longterm. It's a classic story of over-coming adversity, struggling to do the right thing, and learning to make the right decisions to become a better person. It comes across as very true-to-life and believable with tremendously real performances!

Breathtakingly believable as a selfish, angry and somewhat lost young man, Richard Gere takes us on a roller coaster ride of character development that is stunningly real. I was honestly surprised he didn't receive a nomination for best actor for this performance, hands down one of his best to date. Debra Winger was nominated for Best Supporting Actress while Lou Gossett, Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the dunting drill sergeant who manages to make a real man and an officer out of Zach Mayo. David Keith in the role of Sid Worley, Zach' best friend, also shines in a moving and ultimately heart breaking performance of his own. Rounding out the cast, Lisa Blount in the role of Paula's white trash best friend did a formidable job of conveying the utter desperation and hopelessness that leads a certain type of woman to do whatever it takes to marry up in life.

"An Officer and a Gentleman" is an intense romance/drama filled with a chemistry seldom seen with such startling realism (despite the supposed conflict between Gere & Winger off camera). The energy and sexual intensity are exactly what great romance is made of. It will make you laugh, make you cry, make you angry and make you sigh. And by the time you reach the end, it will have you cheering. Will anyone who has seen it ever forget the moment Zach sweeps Paula into his arms and marches her out of that humdrum factory life to live happily ever after? I know I won't!

4 out of 5 stars Great plight to unlikely success for Richard Gere's character.......2007-08-15

This is a fantastic movie. It ebbs and flows away a good drama should. This movie lacks action because it's a drama and they don't waste a lot of money blowing up cars and buildings just to get people to care. Good acting and a good story. This movie is set in Seattle, Washington and stays true to the areas economic condition. Poulsbo, Washington is where the movie was filmed, but it is supposed to be taking place in Bremerton Naval Academy. The cinematography is a little bit dated, but then again, this film is well over 20 years old. Debra Winger, Richard Gere have good screen chemistry. It's a good date movie for anyone who hasn't already seen it.

4 out of 5 stars A great and honest movie.......2007-08-14

I saw this film for the first time and I wish I hadn't waited so long to see it. An Officer And A Gentleman is a brilliant film with great performances from Richard Gere, Louis Gossett Jr. and Debra Winger. Richard Gere embodies the character of Zack Mayo, a troubled young man who, due to neglect and ill parenting by a military father, signs up with the Navy to get some direction in his misguided life.

Richard Gere is great in adding layers to what could have been a poorly drawn characterisation. Mayo is not always the 'good guy' and is more often than not a complete prick.
This movie shows what a person can accomplish when they believe in themselves and have a big brother who cares enough to make them succeed. This is a great movie.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic........2007-06-23

Although Officer and a Gentleman is riddled with cliches and predictability, it is also one of the most romantic movies of it's time.

Paula, a small town factory worker, meets and falls in love with Zach, an Navy officer candidate. She helps him through basic training, while they both overcome past and present tragedies. Once training is over, what will come of their short-term romance?

Oh, I definitely CANNOT resist a young Richard Gere in uniform. Believe me. I had to wipe the drool off of my chin. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Girl Gets What Girl Wants.......2007-06-12

This is just a simple old-fashioned love story, 1992-style. Lower-class loner guy joins Navy, gets into OCS to be a pilot and, along the way, meets a homie who wants a sailor to take her away from her factory job. A fling turns into the real thing, no matter how hard he tries to deny his feelings for her and, in the end, rescues the factory princess and drives away with her.

A true chick flick.

The Little Vampire is excellently acted and great to look at. Stuart Little's Jonathan Lipnicki carries, on his pint-sized shoulders, his every scene as 8-year-old Tony, befriender of vampires, and the Scottish setting lends itself nicely to spookiness. But where this video earns most points is in the plot department. A continent away from his native California, Tony's having a tough time making new friends when a band of vagabond vampires enters his life through his bedroom window. The encounter seems pure coincidence at first, but then the scary truth surfaces: Tony, though he's not a vampire himself, has "sympathy for our kind," as the dad of the bat-linked brood puts it. Visions of vampire happenings from generations past invade the third-grader's consciousness, and they hold the key to the clan's current gypsy-like predicament. Through his clairvoyance and, by extension, the discovery of a long-lost amulet, the mostly benevolent bloodsuckers are able to reclaim their rightful status as proper cave dwellers in their homeland. Clueless-parent predicaments abound and are cleverer than most--Tony's mom and dad smirk at their son's vampire-obsessed imagination until the cape-draped heads of the clan drop by for a visit--and the gang's adventures eluding a bumbling vampire hunter are genuinely chuckleworthy. At-home Twizzler munchers ages 8 and older won't soon tire of this charmer of a Transylvanian transplant. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-06-27

This movie is a really enjoyable movie for all ages. My son will not stop watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Daughter's Favorite Movie for MONTHS.......2007-03-30

This movie is so cute! The flying vampire cows are insane. Funniest part of the movie is the farmer who keeps going in to check on the cows! Cute, sweet fun. Get it and watch it with your kids. Very funny movie.

This movie is pretty old so actors are pretty well grown by now BUT my daughter has a HUGE crush on boy who plays Rudolph. Be prepared Moms and Dads as he is a little cutie and your girls will flip over this mini heart throb.

4 out of 5 stars It's Great........2007-03-18

My little sister and I love this movie. So does my mother and she does not like vampire movies, but she say's that this one was good.

5 out of 5 stars A great feel good movie.......2007-01-10

My Grandson has worn out two VHS tapes of this movie. It is one of those movies you can watch over and over with your kids and always find something else to enjoy. We bought him two DVDs for Christmas one for his house and one for ours.
The vampires in this movie are not out to harm anyone, just be a "normal" family. The flying cows are a giggle.
Grade school kids should be fine with this movie, preschool kids may need an adult to watch the first time.

5 out of 5 stars not too scary, but maybe alittle, kid's show.......2007-01-03

This is one of my 5 year old's favorite movies. I bought it after renting it about 10 times from Blockbuster. It is a kid's show, but watch it with them at first if your kids are little. Some of the scenes could be a little intense for first time viewers. However, most of them are humorous and the scary of the scary parts wears off. I love the vampire cows especially.

John Waters expands the definition of female trouble in this mutant tribute to good-girl-gone-bad drive-in melodramas. The girl is, of course, cross-dressing cult icon Divine, Waters's plus-sized muse. Divine is at her most gleefully outrageous as teenage brat Dawn Davenport, who runs away from home and into a life of wanton hedonism all because she didn't get cha-cha heels for Christmas. Almost immediately she's molested by a sleazy motorcycle thug (also played by Divine--is this Waters's idea of "love thyself"?), but she doesn't let motherhood interfere with her plans of stardom and turns herself into an unlikely fashion statement in an apocalyptic fashion show. Waters's fourth feature, a follow-up to the midnight movie hit Pink Flamingos, is just as cinematically primitive and even more gleefully vulgar, right down to the electric climax of Dawn's road to everlasting fame. --Sean Axmaker

You're going to think I'm kidding when I say this, but I'm not: "Female Trouble" is the best script ever written. Why? Because almost EVERY SINGLE LINE of dialog in the film is unforgettable! It's the ultimate sing-along! I've shown it to people
