Ice Cube triumphantly returns as Calvin Palmer, proud proprietor of a neighborhood barbershop in Barbershop 2. The first Barbershop was a surprise smash; even more surprising is how good this sequel is. The plot isn't much--there's a corporate haircutting chain opening across the street, leading to the usual sentiments about the importance of small businesses and neighborhoods--but the well-conceived characters and the loose, genuine banter give this movie a striking richness of feeling. Barbershop 2 cuts back and forth in time, flashing back to when Eddie (garrulous Cedric the Entertainer), the shop's oldest and most outspoken barber, first came to work for Calvin's father. Glimpses of black history give weight to the modern-day struggles; most impressively, this device doesn't feel forced or cynical. Also returning are Eve, Troy Garity, and Sean Patrick Thomas; Queen Latifah (Bringing Down the House) is a new face on the block. --Bret Fetzer

*CUBE* Does It Again For The 2nd Time Around.......2007-03-27
I love this movie. It had a great story line. The acting was great.
I like the fact that it used, the very same cast members from Part 1.
Also if you are aware of, what really happens in a barber shop then you can relate to this movie. It's really FUNNY!!!!
back to da bin-ness.......2007-01-21
why do i want to watch lazy people act lazy on camera. The formula is for uneducated people to think they and their homies are cool for watching this movie. ice cube feeds of the poor and gets richer day by day.
2nd rate cash in version of the original...............2006-10-31
Loved the back and forth between Cedric's "Eddie" and Latifah's character.
[3.5]--Barbershop 2 Cuts a little bit deeper towards your scalp........2006-09-28
I loved the first "Barbershop" but to me the sequel has a lot more in depth with its characters and we learn a little more about each one and how they have improved since the first film. If "Back in Business" has any flaws, it's that there is not enough action inside the barbershop, where most of the action took place in the first film. The movie is a bit of a repeat of the first movie (the barbershop is threatened by closure, this time by competition). There is a little more drama with "Back in Business" that never slows the film down; a little drama never hurt anyone, did it? Either way, I did thoroughly enjoy it because it sprinkles some soul-pleasing themes about community, loyalty, and ethnic harmony.
Queen Latifah makes a great addition to the cast, as the sharp-tongued proprietor of a beauty salon next door. Ice Cube, who I think has come along way, portrayed his character realistically and likeable but sometimes appear wooden at times. There is also a hilarious scene where the Alderman tries to have a photo opportunity in the barbershop and everything goes wrong. What's New to Barbershop 2 is the back story telling how Cedric The Entertainer's character came to be at the barbershop and the experiences of the barbershop back in the 50s and 60s (reminded me of an old "Good Times" episode). These scenes are well done and tells us whey Cedric The Entertainer's character is allowed to do virtually nothing at the barbershop.
There are so many other good characters: Isaac (Troy Garity), Terri (Eve), Jimmy (Sean Patrick Thomas)... Too bad so many of the supporting characters rely on stereotypes. For instance, we know that the Alderman is corrupt and a pervert within seconds of seeing him, and that the ridiculously uptight-looking white man sitting next to Eddie on the train is going to say something stupid and ignorant. During that part I just shook my head, for some reason we are unable to stay away from those predicament.
Barbershop 2: Back in Business' doesn't offer us anything new as far as content but I will recommend it because the shop scenes are just plain funny and sweet just like the first film.
Barbershop 2.......2006-08-28
Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and Eve return, reprising their characters in "Barbershop 2: Back in Business". It's not as good as the first film, I didn't think, but it's still worth a look if you enjoyed the antics of the characters in the first film.
Calvin (Ice Cube) is proud of his barbershop, and of his community on the south side of Chicago. Guys can come in, get a hair cut, have a conversation, get some things off their chest. It's a great place, but it may not last. There's some new plans for their block. New types of stores, new types of customers. Doesn't bother Calvin and the gang too much until they hear of plans for a new "Nappy Cuts" hairdressing franchise to open across the street. They've got everything a guy could want in there, latest razors and scissors, a TV, fish in an aquarium. You can even play basketball in there! Will the local barbershop be able to handle the competition?
The characters are still as interesting, and there are a couple of nice jokes in there, but I didn't like this film as much as the first. It seemed a little more padded, I guess.
Still, it's worth a look if you enjoyed the first, it's all right.

With enough lively banter to keep its customers happy for years, Barbershop is a loose, lanky comedy with its heart--and its humor--in all the right places. Ice Cube plays Calvin, reluctant heir to his late father's barbershop on Chicago's South Side--a neighborhood institution that seems like a trap for a guy with bigger dreams. But Calvin is devoted to his employees and local customers, and when he makes an ill-considered deal with a loan shark (Keith David), the future of the barbershop hangs in the balance. There's a goofy subplot involving a stolen cash machine, but what gives Barbershop its abundant charm is its compassionate, feel-good vibe for its likable characters--not just scene-stealer Cedric the Entertainer (as Eddie the veteran barber, whose shaving lesson is a shining pearl of wisdom), but the entire well-chosen cast. It may seem like a lot of casual rap, but look and listen closely, and Barbershop will reward you with its danceable rhythms of life. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
cooning on camera.......2007-05-29
While some people still wonder where Waldo might be, others might wonder where and why Ice Cube turned out the way he did. Instead of evolving in music, culture and film he turned his focus onto sophomoric humor and bombastic slapstick with "we are the world" dialogue that adds up to nothing but a neo-version of "Birth of a Nation." All the cardboard characters in Barber Shop get crafted into stereotypes that do not add up to much but minimal spurts of bathroom humor. Ice Cube weaves in and out of serious topics about ownership, real-estate, white collar crime and Anglo fantasies but these addressed get re-dressed and celebrated for their errors and mistakes. In my conclusion, there is no redemption to the immoral of the story. Nothing here is worth the price for this dvd. I would suggest Spike Lee's "WE CUT HEADS" film (1984) as a real, funny, sad, contemplative, sophisticated film that captures the essence that is lacking in this lackey's flick!
It's The *CUBE* Man.......2007-03-27
I really enjoyed this movie. It was very funny with a great cast.
Also it had a very good story line. If your are a "Ice Cube" fan, than i suggest that you see this movie. You want be disappointed.
I did like the movie !!.......2006-11-28
First and foremost this movie was based about a man who makes a wrong decision in life and come to find out that his barbershop was really worth saving because of the history ..and for people saying things about they shdnt talked about rosa parks which is true but , in majority every african american barbershop u go to someone is talking about someone or something so basically I dont think its really sterotyping blacks becuase u hear it anyways!!
Instant Classic -" You heard that you Planters!".......2006-10-31
Rustic authentic original Barbershop is a classic. Great storyline, great characters, funny and dramatic at the same time. It's another movie with Ice Cube playing characters that are opposite his former gangster image.
My only beef is that if no topic is off limits they could have spread the disses around.
Great Characters.......2006-08-28
"Barbershop" is a warm, Chicago-based comedy set around an African-American barbershop, full of interesting characters, and funny banter.
Ice Cube plays Calvin Palmer, owner of a Chicago barbershop, a shop that once belonged to his father. It's not exactly in the best neighbourhood, but it's a living (someone stole an ATM from over the road, for instance, but that's another story). He's got a loving wife, a baby on the way, a home studio on the side, but he's also got a lot of debt and a lot of bills to pay. Looking for a way out, he sells the shop for $20,000 to a shady loan shark from the streets, but he soon regrets it after he does. His barbershop is full of history, it's an important place for the community, and if the loan shark has his way there'll never be a place like this in the area again. Can Calvin get his shop back?
One of the great things about this film is how unique each of the characters are. It's great seeing them all interact. The locations are pretty well shot and put together too, I thought. It all keeps things interesting to watch.
Definitely worth a look.

Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.......2006-11-17
I chose this Fields title for this review because Amazon seems to be employing it as a business practice. I dearly love the movie of that title and would like to add it to my DVD library. So I entered it into the "search" field and clicked on "go." I was delighted...at first...to see this collection pop up and I 1-click ordered it immediately. Then I discovered the movie is not included; the set is merely the same old collection of shorts that have been issued and reissued over and over by other companies. I tried to cancel the order but was informed that it was already being processed and could not be cancelled or changed. It arrived and I returned it immediately.
Maybe some day NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK will become available (hopefully issued in the quality restoration it well deserves). But don't let Amazon sucker you into buying this set if it's the movie you're after. We deserve an even break!
Great Shorts, Unbelievably Bad DVD.......2004-11-25
I have an old 80s VHS of this from a budget label that cost me $4 back in the day. And it still looks better. Heads get cut off, scratches galore. And it sounded better--Madacy should've added subtitles to "The Pharmacist." Many of the shorts can't even track the audio; people talk a beat before their mouths move.
I didn't get my money's worth, and I paid $6!
Subtract one star. Appalling DVD ruins some classic comedy.......2004-02-28
W. C. Fields's short comedies of 1932-33, produced by Mack Sennett, offer some of this great comedian's best work. However, this particular DVD edition treats Mr. Fields (and the purchaser) quite shabbily. The sound is not always synchronized with the picture, the image is often gray, and in at least one instance the film seems to be copied from a VHS tape recorded at the slowest speed. Just plain bad; don't throw your money away (we did, and we also threw the discs away).
A General Rule of Thumb.......2004-02-15
Hmmmm....
If it's from Madacy, you will be MAD when you SEE what you paid for.
Before transferring a movie to video, these people would put a pristine print through a blender just to make sure their standards don't deviate.
Madacy=Garbage
This is one of those DVD's that doesn't deserve one star but it's as low as I could go.
Pure Exploitation.......2003-03-08
I have to make this very clear: I can think of very few DVDs Madacy has produced that were good (or even mediocre). This, however, is probably the worst I've seen. The company has spat upon the great comedian's grave. Several public domain shorts have been slapped on this DVD with terrible picture and sound that is downright disgraceful. In fact, this is the worst sound I've even heard on a DVD. There are also the traditionally stinky Madacy extras (Biography, Trivia, Quotes, Filmography).
Don't be fooled by the label at the back of the box ("a must for collectors and fans of this comedy genius"). A very nice looking edition has been released by Criterion. Get it.
