When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin' in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line "To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray") and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It's not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.
Read our interview with
Charmian Carr, who played
Liesl von Trapp in The
Sound of Music. |
It doesn't matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. So why resist, especially when the 40th Anniversary Edition is the best DVD yet.
The DVDs
As if the direct involvement of Julie Andrews weren't enough, the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Sound of Music is a must-have for fans because of the fond sense of nostalgia that will touch all but the worst cynic's heart. Andrews introduces both discs and contributes a commentary track on the film. It's a joy to hear her speak about the film (for example, she explains how she solved her dislike for the lyrics of "I Have Confidence"), and also heard are remarks by Christopher Plummer (who at one point refers to his being 48, which if true would mean his comments were made in about 1975), Charmian Carr (Liesl), choreographer Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes Von Trapp (the real-life Maria Von Trapp's youngest son, who admits that his father did have a whistle but claims that he was not as stern as portrayed in the film). Even with all those people involved, there are still significant gaps of silence, however. Retained from the previous two-disc editions is the commentary track by director Robert Wise, which during the musical numbers becomes an isolated score with no vocals. Also new are sing-along subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, which allow you to have your own sing-along at home. In addition, the film's remastering shows off a truer and much warmer sense of color.
On the second disc, Andrews participates in a new 63-minute documentary "My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers." But it's really a general making-of documentary with contributions from a number of principals, including director Robert Wise, who died in mid-2005 (not surprisingly, some stories are repeated from the commentary track and from the 87-minute documentary on the previous DVD). Andrews also shares a warm 19-minute sit-down with Christopher Plummer. Carr, who over the years has become the film's biggest advocate, narrates a new 22-minute documentary, "On Location with The Sound of Music," in which she revisits the places in Salzburg where the movie was filmed, and even joins one of the "Sound of Music tours" that have become a booming industry. And acknowledging another big industry, there's a 12-minute featurette on the sing-along phenomenon, focusing specifically on the audience, costumed and otherwise, that attended a sold-out Hollywood Bowl sing-along in 2005. Making special appearances at the event are four von Trapp great-grandchildren and all seven of the actors who played the children. Thankfully, those actors also appear in a 33-minute documentary "From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion," in which they explain what they do now (many are still in show business) and share stories about the film, who was afraid of Christopher Plummer, and what they feel is their responsibility to the film's passionate fans. What's touching is how the group still considers themselves a family so many years later. Other material includes an A&E documentary on the von Trapps, Mia Farrow's screen test for the Liesl role, and a restoration comparison.
What's Missing?
If you already own the previous two-disc editions, you'll want this 40th Anniversary Edition as well, but you might not want to toss those versions. Probably the most significant omission from this edition is the original 14-minute documentary Charmian Carr made in 1967, "Salzburg Sight and Sound." Carr's new documentary includes only a couple clips from the vintage piece. It's not a great work of art, but it's a notable loss and would have made a good contrast with the new documentary. In addition, the new making-of documentary is about 24 minutes shorter than the old one. Also missing are the audio-only features--the interviews, the radio programs, the Ernest Lehman spotlight--and the historical still gallery examining the history of Salzburg and the film. Granted, this material probably got the least play of any of the old features, but completists might want to hold onto their old discs for it. It would have also been nice to have screen tests other than Farrow's. Tests for all the children and for Christopher Plummer (including singing in his own voice before he was dubbed for the film) were included on Hollywood Screen Tests and Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies. Again, they're not critical but it would have been nice to have them all in one place. So maybe the 40th Anniversary Edition isn't the complete package on The Sound of Music, but it's the most satisfying edition yet, with enough new material to please even the veteran SoM DVD watcher. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
The cheesiest, corniest yet funny and romantic movie of all time.......2007-09-10
I just bought this version and haven't had time to play all of the special features, but there seems to be a lot of commentaries and less behind the scene videos. I would love to see the deleted scenes or video of the actors while filming this movie, but I think it's too much to ask since this movie was made in the mid 60's. They did a great job in restoring it though. The quality of the picture is very good, almost as if it was recently made, which led me to discovery of why all actresses back then looked so beautiful and their faces looked perfectly smooth and wrinkle-free... LOL.
However, I think this is by far the cheesiest, corniest yet funny and romantic movie I have ever seen.
The funniest scenes are when the Captain blew his whistle to summon his children and when Maria blew her whistle to ask for Captain's own signal. The look on his face was priceless.
The most romantic scene is the Laendler scene, where their relationship started to bloom.
The cheesiest and corniest scene is the gazebo scene between Maria and the Captain. Somehow, I don't see any chemistry between them. Maybe it's the way the Captain touched Maria or his exaggerated voice when asking for Maria's relative to ask permission, I'm not sure. To me the Laendler scene is more convincing in showing their blooming romance.
The most unforgettable songs are Edelweiss and Do re mi (even my 2yo loves these songs and can sing to them).
Overall, I love this movie, especially the handsome Captain, played effectively by Chris Plummer. I think he should be nominated for Academy Award instead of Peggy Wood who played Reverend Mother... But this is different story.
I feel kind of sorry for the Baroness, since she's not a real villain, but someone who traveled all the way to Salzburg to get acquainted with her beau's children only to be intercepted by their governess/charmer. However I don't disapprove of Maria and Georg's romance, since that's the plot... LOL. Eleanor Parker was convincing in her role as Baroness.
Julie Andrews was also effective in playing a cheerful, innocent and outspoken governess with a gifted voice. It was a little bit disappointing when after the wedding, she suddenly played a role of a doting but reserved and obedient wife.
As for the dubbing issue and the apathy from Chris Plummer... I don't really care. They shouldn't have dubbed his singing since it was fine... Although it was a bit shaky, it sounded sincere and more realistic coming from someone who hadn't sung in years. Perhaps, this (and the fact that he was somewhat limited to similar roles as Captain von Trapp after this movie) is why he dislikes this movie so much up to this day.
Magnificent!.......2007-09-09
I saw this movie as a child, at the cinema.
Now I returned to it and got even more pleasure.
Fantastic performance, marvelous music, beautiful locations.
Gourmet's choice!
For use in Czech Republic.......2007-09-04
This was purchased for a gift to someone in Prague and we find out that their system will not permit them to play the DVD. Is there an other way to get this to play European style?
"Fa, a long, long way to run..." (if you're from Boston).......2007-09-03
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is incredibly entertaining and incredibly effective despite the fact that it is incredibly hokey. THE SOUND OF MUSIC may actually be the source of all known hokeyness in the universe. Still, despite it all, this film leaves nuclear waste long-haul truckers and oil-rig wildcatters singing, "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" with a smile on their grizzled faces.
There's a lovely innocence to this film that touches everyone who sees it. Julie Andrews as Maria essentially reprises her MARY POPPINS role as the magical governess who brings happiness to a houseful of lonely children being raised by an overly stern but loving father.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is more or less the true story of the singing von Trapp family who fled anschluss Austria to escape the overwhelming shadow of Nazism. Christopher Plummer plays Naval Captain Georg von Trapp, a rather benevolent despot of a parent who is mismanaging his children with brisk military efficiency when Maria appears. The new Nanny is a reluctant Novice at the local convent, sent out into the world by the Reverend Mother to measure her devotion to the cloister. She soon falls in love with the children and they with her. As Maria and the children bond, the Captain and Maria are drawn to one another. They eventually marry, and as the Germans occupy their country, they flee over the mountains to Switzerland.
Most of the musical numbers in THE SOUND OF MUSIC have become true standards, including, "The Sound of Music," "Sixteen on Seventeen," "Do-Re-Mi" (AKA "Doe a Deer"), "A Few of My Favorite Things," and "Edelweiss" (which is NOT the national anthem of Austria). Rodgers and Hammerstein contributed their best and last to the libretto. Musically, the 1965 movie varies somewhat from the 1959 stage play, but this only means there are more classics to be had in enjoying them both.
Certain scenes have become classics in and of themselves: The opening scene of Julie Andrews flinging her arms and pirouetting joyfully on the slopes of the Unterberg is instantly recognizable. The chorus of smiling nuns is equally recognizable. The gazebo scene and gentle dance between the eldest daughter, Liesl and her boyfriend Rolf, still leaves the viewer with wet eyes. Plummer and Andrews' wistful last scene on stage in Salzbug is moving.
Affection for this staid but singular film has led to it being often parodied (i.e., "The Sound of Murder") and picked on (viz., "The Sound of Mucous"), and it is awfully easy to goof on the dialogue and songs, but nevertheless, we keep coming back to it.
When released, THE SOUND OF MUSIC became the top-grossing film of all time, and, inflation adjusted, it still stands in the top ten. The continuing popularity of this film is amazing, especially considering that four decades later the movie musical is all but dead. There are no dramatic special effects, no car chases, no explosions, no T & A, and not a foul word in this film. No doubt, this combination of elements accounts for its success. The political yahoos who grow fat on trumpeting "Family Values" could do more good by encouraging people to watch this film than by all the other anti-whatever they hypocritically babble about. Of course, that assumes they really believe what they're saying in the first place.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is true G-Rated quality family entertainment, an artifact of a gentler age.
The greatest movie ever made.......2007-08-31
Every moment in "The Sound Of Music" is magical, the music is incredible, it touches your heart and soul. This is my all-time favorite movie.

Premiering on ABC in 1968 and lasting just 51 episodes before its cancellation in 1970, Irwin Allen's fantasy series Land of the Giants has built a sizable (if you'll pardon the pun) fan base in subsequent decades thanks to its mix of adventure, science fiction, and camp; now those dedicated fans can enjoy the entire series in an impressive set that features a wealth of extras. The template for Giants is remarkably similar to that of Allen's Lost in Space; here, the passengers and crew of the commercial spacecraft The Spindrift encounters a mysterious energy force en route to London and finds themselves on a planet which parallels Earth in every way save one - its inhabitants are twelve times the size of the marooned crew. The protagonists are less tightly knit than Space's astronaut family Robinson - in fact, pilots Gary Conway and Don Marshall regularly butt heads with architect Don Matheson and entertainer Deanna Lund - though all seem to agree that orphan Stefan Arngrim is cute as a button and Kurt Kasznar is as much a pain in the neck as Dr. Smith (amusingly, Jonathan Harris turns up in this set in the episode "Pay the Piper"). But The Spindrift castaways' adventures are less juvenile than those of the later Lost in Space episodes, and the special effects (which cost the network a record-setting $250,000 per episode) are impressive for the period. The nine-DVD set for Land of the Giantscontains the series' entire network run, as well as the unaired pilot, which offers a similar take on the debut episode, "The Crash," minus John Williams' jazzy theme and other elements. Most of the surviving cast members (Kasznar passed away in 1979, and Heather Young is not included) is featured in interviews about their experiences on the show, and there are several home videos of producer Allen directing the program and interacting with the over sized props and sets. Also featured on the discs are galleries of publicity shots, episodic photos, show merchandise and of the photogenic Ms. Lund, and the MAD Magazine parody. Meanwhile, buyers can also pursue a reproduction of the comic book adaptation and a booklet with more cast interviews and photos, and check out a set of trading cards, a Spindrift key chain and crew iron-on patch - all of which is contained in the set's clever carrying case, which reproduces a wooden cage that held the Giants' heroes in one episode. Though casual admirers may balk at the Giant Collection price tag, diehards will undoubtedly appreciate having the entire set and quality extras at their disposal. -- Paul Gaita

Awesome Show!!!.......2007-09-11
I loved this show and watched many episodes with my family when I was young. Although I agree that the price is not ideal, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to own this 70's classic. I guess I should mention that I bought it last week when the Gold Box deal was $99.99. Anyway, it is a birthday present to myself...a steal at $99...worth every penny. I watched the first few episodes last night. The picture and sound quality are both excellent. The packaging is cute (wooden box with Land of Giants comic book, key chain, and patch), but not at all necessary. I strongly suspect that if they hadn't gone a little overboard on the packaging, the cost would have been less. Anyway, sacrifice a few lattes and lunches, buy the set, and think of it as an investment in nostalgia.
Must buy for Fans .......2007-09-11
If you're a fan of the series then this is a must own. If you never watched the show then you better rent first before you chuck over the cash. I'm a fan but I won't pay full price for this set so I got in on the half price sale. You can also find it cheaper on other sites like Ebay. It's hard to believe they kept the show on for two seasons while shows today hardly last one. The show still holds up well with great sets and camera work. This isn't a numbered set so I don't know how limited it is. Just think for about 30 bucks more you can get the ten season set of Stargate SG-1. A nice set but do some research before you buy.

Chuck Jones and other great studio animators sneered at the cheap look and lazy craftsmanship of Hanna Barbera's television cartoons in the 1960s, but there's no question HB's original, 35-year-old Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is enduringly beloved. The Complete First and Second Seasons includes all 25 stories first broadcast from September '69 to October '71, a growth period in which canine hero Scooby's voice (by Don Messick, who also voiced The Jetsons's pup, Astro) was gradually refined from murky garble to Scoob's more familiar, "Rrroowwrr"-inflected, human-like speech. This set also represents the pre-frills Scooby-Doo: no guest appearances by Don Knotts or Batman, no Scrappy-Doo--just adventure and occasional bubblegum pop tunes by Danny Janssen and sundry co-writers (e.g., "Pretty Mary Sunlite" in the episode "Don't Fool with a Phantom").
Watching all the shows back-to-back reveals evolving complexity in the scripts. Over time, Scooby-Doo's creators added multiple bad guys in cahoots with major villains, and developed sub-plots, backstories, and even appealing allies and friends of Mystery, Inc., a traveling band of young debunkers of supernatural phenomena. Riding around in their psychedelic Mystery Van, preppie leader Fred and his friends--haughty Daphne, brainy Velma, quasi-hippie Shaggy, and Shaggy's best pal, Scooby, an excitable Great Dane--chase down and are chased by alleged ghouls who generally turn out to be venal humans running various scams.
Included here is Scooby-Doo's premiere, "What a Night for a Knight," in which the gang looks into the disappearance of a noted archaeologist and end up in a "haunted" museum. The fun "Go Away Ghost Ship" finds our heroes helping a shipping company daunted by the apparent ghost of pirate Red Beard, while the silly classic "A Tiki Scare Is No Fair" concerns a Hawaiian vacation for Mystery, Inc. disrupted by a witch doctor. --Tom Keogh

Scooby Doo Season 1 & 2.......2007-09-13
There are 4 dvd's in the package. The episodes are as advertised. Shipping was as advertised. After renting these dvd's a few times I decided to buy them for my grandkids to have available at my house. They now ask for them when they come over. So I think they will be some of the most watched that I have.
Impressed.......2007-09-11
Perfect condition, recieved in a timely manner, and was exactly as described and what I was looking for. Price was great, too, which was a bonus.
Love it!.......2007-09-07
My husband and I are huge Scooby-Doo fans, so it was great to be able to buy the complete first and second seasons on one DVD. My 3-year-old son just loves the DVDs and watches at least one episode a day. I love being able to share part of my childhood experiences with him. He also loves the Tom and Jerry DVDs. Unfortunately they don't make cartoons like this anymore. I would definitely recommend Scooby-Doo - the First and Second Seasons.
"Nostalgic" doesn't always mean "good.".......2007-06-23
Like oodles of other GenXers now entering middle age, I spent a half-hour or hour of my 1970s Saturday mornings watching the gang roll around in a cool-looking van; run into a mystery involving an inexplicable monster of local legend; do the 3-2 split of Fred, Velma, Danger Prone Daphne and Shaggy and Scooby; have Shag and Scoob looking for food when they weren't running scared; watch Fred and Velma, the two brains in the outfit, solve the mystery and somehow trap and unmask the monster.
It was a hunk of my youth and I'll still make jokes about Scooby snacks, Shaggy's apparent munchies, Fred's questionable sexual orientation and loved that the bunch saving the world on Buffy the Vampire Slayer called themselves "The Scooby Gang." And watching these episodes does take me back to those Saturday mornings.
But doing so after watching the recent "What's New, Scooby Doo" episodes on Boomerang (8:30 p.m. Eastern) shows up how weak they really are.
And, as another reviewer noted, the extras are bupkiss. For me, great extras are what separates a true DVD from just being "VHS on disc." I want background on the creation of the character, certain episodes and how the creators felt about working with what quickly became a pop culture icon. None of that here. In fact, these extras are the worst of any Hanna-Barbera set I have and I'm not necessarily crazy about the extras on any of the other sets.
Back to the actual episodes. I bought this set because the Boomerang episodes got my daughter hooked on Scooby Doo and I needed Scooby eps available on demand. As I watched these, I realized that the newer episodes showed up the deficiencies of the original in animation, plotting and dialogue.
Stiff animation you could forgive, as the era's technology and television budgets forced Hanna-Barbera into limited animation and they did the best they could with it. But the plotting was repetitive, the characters two-dimensional and the dialogue stiff with wit that would just get by in a suburban schoolyard (it's almost painful to watch an early Scooby Doo after watching a Yogi Bear, Huck Hound or Quick Draw McGraw cartoon. Maybe because those old Warner writers, Mike Maltese and Warren Foster, didn't do Scoob's adventures).
This DVD set is worth the money to me only because it lets me satisfy requests for "Scooby Doooo!" from my two-year-old daughter. For show quality, however, I'd advise setting the TiVo for channel No. 297 on the dish, 8:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Best Scooby Doo.......2007-06-05
This is the original Scooby Doo that actually frightened me as a kid, it remains the scariest mystery type show for kids. This features that classic episode with that frightening witch. Witch Witch Is Which?

When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

This sweet little love story rises above all it's cliches because of the likable stars and story that moves along briskly. The love story in sad enough, but the Alzheimer's angle really tears your heart out! I watched this because my wife wanted to watch it on our anniversary. I was surprised how much I liked it.....so guys don't squirm too much if your babe wants to watch this one, it's a good story and I admired Gosling's tenacity and devotion to his true love. One of the better romances I've seen in a while, so I rate it 4 stars, but it's definitely a 5 tissue movie! This was mostly because of the Alzheimer's part of the film, it's a tragic disease and having dealt with it in my family it was a little too close to home. The DVD transfer looks very good and the are some interesting extras.
BEST.LOVESTORY.EVER. Ryan Gosling is AMAZING!.......2007-08-31
I fell in love with not only this beautiful story but Ryan Gosling!!!! This is just a fantastic movie and I really can't find better words to describe it. Watch it. Own it. Love it forever!! It is my all-time favorite!!
I'm still a sucker.......2007-08-27
...for these tear jerkers. This movie will go down as a romance classic- a forbidden love about two people from the wrong side of the tracks-Romeo and Juliet for the 1940's, if you will. This film hits all my cheesy love spots and turn up aces with me. McAdams/Goslin were great as well as Garner and Rowland. This is a must see for all Chick movie lovers. Highly recommended.
~Have a box of tissue handy~.......2007-08-08
Although I'm not going to give away any spoilers ... this is a love story like no others. I think that everyone can relate on some level to this movie. You will fall in love with this couple & become drawn in to their story. I recommended this to my mother who after the movie called up crying her eyes out. Even my husband enjoyed this movie. If your looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry & touch your heart ... this is a must-see.
Beautiful Tale Well Told.......2007-07-25
If you haven't read the book, the movie will not leave you feeling short changed.
A marvellous story about lovers, life and loss.
Highly recommended.
If you're interested, once you watch the movie, read the book The Wedding - it is the follow up from The Notebook.

By now, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have amassed such a fund of goodwill with moviegoers that any new onscreen pairing brings nearly reflexive smiles. In You've Got Mail, the quintessential boy and girl next door repeat the tentative romantic crescendo that made Sleepless in Seattle, writer-director Nora Ephron's previous excursion with the duo, a massive hit. The prospective couple do actually meet face to face early on, but Mail otherwise repeats the earlier feature's gentle, extended tease of saving its romantic resolution until the final, gauzy shot.
The underlying narrative is an even more old-fashioned romantic pas de deux that is casually hooked to a newfangled device. The script, cowritten by the director and her sister, Delia Ephron, updates and relocates the Ernst Lubitsch classic, The Shop Around the Corner, to contemporary Manhattan, where Joe Fox (Hanks) is a cheerfully rapacious merchant whose chain of book superstores is gobbling up smaller, more specialized shops such as the children's bookstore owned by Kathleen Kelly (Ryan). Their lives run in close parallel in the same idealized neighborhood, yet they first meet anonymously, online, where they gradually nurture a warm, even intimate correspondence. As they begin to wonder whether this e-mail flirtation might lead them to be soul mates, however, they meet and clash over their colliding business fortunes.
It's no small testament to the two stars that we wind up liking and caring about them despite the inevitable (and highly manipulative) arc of the plot. Although their chemistry transcended the consciously improbable romantic premise of Sleepless, enabling director Ephron to attain a kind of amorous soufflé, this time around there's a slow leak that considerably deflates the affair. Less credulous viewers will challenge Joe's logic in prolonging the concealment of his online identity from Kathleen, and may shake their heads at Ephron's reinvention of Manhattan as a spotless, sun-dappled wonderland where everybody lives in million-dollar apartments and color coordinates their wardrobes for cocktail parties. --Sam Sutherland

Lovable Film!!!!.......2007-09-04
Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.... what's not to love? Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks as star-crossed lovers/bitter enemies who don't realize they are star-crossed lovers.... seriously. What's not to love?
This is a movie that eliminates any chance of a generational divide. You have a classic love story told in modern terms and circumstances... (i.e. the internet.)You have two of the world's best actors ever.... And you have Brinkley, the wonderful, beautiful and scene-stealing golden retriever.
In a world where nothing is what it seems, enemies truly can become friends... friends can become lovers and lovers can make an eternity together.
If you watch only one romantic comedy in your life, let it be this one... For the love of all that is holy, I beg you. Let it be this one!
More Nora Ephron cynicism, disguised as sentiment.......2007-08-20
Watching Nora Ephron movies is a trip in the wayback machine to the 1940's, when assertive, career-minded female film characters either (1) held on to their careers and lost the guy, or (2) dumped the career and won the guy. No other option existed. Think women have made progress since then? "You've Got Mail" may be all dressed up in technicolor and tricked up with a relentless pop score, but it's the same old story. Meg Ryan's bookstore owner has a dream, and that dream is smashed to bits by megachain-owing Tom Hanks. When she finally realizes he's the same guy she's fallen in love with online and off, instead of punching him in the mouth she cries and they embrace. Now she can go home and forget all about that bookstore.
Just in case Ryan might have been tempted to hang onto her dream, she has Parker Posey (playing Tom Hanks' fiancee) as a cautionary tale. Posey's character is a nasty, career-obsessed harridan, whose sole plot function is to lose Hanks to Ryan.
This is retro antifeminism at its worst, and it's difficult to understand coming from a woman whose mother, Phoebe, was a respected Hollywood screenwriter in her own right. And Ephron herself is a dedicated career writer, who undoubtedly would spit in the face of anyone who trashed HER career. So why does she write Meg Ryan into a world where the work-related dreams of women count for nothing?
Final note: I wish reviewers would stop comparing this movie to "The Shop Around the Corner". It may technically be a remake, but the two films are not the same league. Ernst Lubitsch had a sharp eye for human folly but he also believed in happy endings based on reality, not manipulative mush. And he respected all his characters equally.
You've got Mail.......2007-08-08
I always watch this movie twice - first, in its original format which is a good romance comedy and second, with the subtitle option of music only which is good background for doing computer work.
An all time favorite.......2007-07-29
If you have seen this movie before (at the theater, on TV, or on DVD), and you enjoy romantic comedys, then no doubt this has already become one of your favorites. Even today, I never get tired of watching it. If you haven't seen it - make a point to do so. It will make you smile.
You've got OSCARS!!!.......2007-07-03
I absolutely know why the academy went nuts over this one. It definitely graduated magnum cum laude in my opinion!!!
The chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is out of this world! Sleepless in Seattle was good, Running in Circles was great, and You've Got Mail was phenomenal!!!
I loved that one part when Tom Hanks sells the dictionary to that one guy!!! It was so funny. I heard that most of this movie was unscripted... just a testament to these actors' abilities to light up the Silver Screen.
Before I write more about this movie, I think it would be a good idea JUST TO THANK these wonderful actors for their contribution. I heard that AOL didn't even exist until after this movie was made!! Talk about defining popular culture, huh?
So back to the movie. Greg Kinnear is in it.
RENT IT.

Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, etc. Characterization is very strong, and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. --Tom Keogh

Very cute, a little weird and quite enjoyable.......2007-08-23
There are some parts I love and some parts that seem to drag for me, but overall, this is a very cool Disney movie with a different feel. I cant quite put my finger on it but it almost doesnt feel like Disney. It has a wicked undertone which I actually love. But then again, the man who wrote the book supposedly wasn't 'all there' when he wrote it so that could explain it.
Were all a little mad.......2007-08-12
Love this movie still watch it to this day its so magical, funny, and refreshing to watch.
Sad.......2007-08-10
Well im pretty sure this movie would have been interesting if I would have recived it in the mail....and I sent an e-mail to the seller and he failed to help me with a refund it really upset me
enduring entertainment.......2007-05-17
Alice in Wonderland includes story lines from Through the Looking Glass so I had my class read both books before showing the movie. The tale was written as a summer diversion for a precocious child and, done as a musical cartoon, provides a willing suspension of disbelief. I also teach Spanish and played a segment in Spanish for those classes. The dialogue was beyond my second year students who soon lost interest.

This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:
ChittyChittyBangBang.......2007-08-25
A wonderful movie with a delightful cast, great movie for kids to watch, and written by Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond.
video.......2007-08-05
I gave this video to my two grandchildren ages 6 and 4 who travel with a video player in their vehicle. The report from my daughter is that they LOVE it!! As did I, and as did my daughter. This is a great item to entertain young children.
UNABLE TO SEE DVD.......2007-06-27
THE ITEM ARRIVED IN GREAT CONDITION ALTHOUGH SLOW IN DELIVERY. CANNOT SEE THE FILM I ORDERED BECAUSE IT IS FOR REGION 1 AND I NEED FILMS FOR REGION 2. REALISED WHEN I PUT THE DVD ON. MY MISTAKE. RATED 5 STARS BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT WAS PACKED.
Lotsa Fun.......2007-06-27
The music is great -- I enjoyed singing along. There are a lot of laughs and some clever surprises. Maybe a bit overdone in spots (emphasis on the fact that the kids weren't in school because they didn't want to be, and the "goblin" character with the silly nose), but all in all it kept my attention from beginning to end. I look forward to watching it again.
Charming Musical with Humor and Fun........2007-06-25
Like "Mary Poppins". A charming story of adventure, imagination, and warmth. England, a 1920's race-car, charming children, their inventor father, a pretty woman, romance, an evil baron ruler of Vulgaria, a castle, a peasant village, songs and dancing, humor, and fun.
Good songs by the same Sherman brothers who wrote the songs of "Mary Poppins". Same dance choreographer from "Mary Poppins". Based on the novel by Ian Fleming, a real life secret agent in World War II. Movie script by Ronald Dahl, who wrote "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". Dick Van Dyke, and an all-star cast, though many unknowns. A very creative real-life inventor created the interesting inventions. A lot of bright, talented, people came together for this film. Too bad they can't make them like this anymore.
I bought this Special Edition for the second disc with the behind-the-scenes. An interesting look at the real life inventor behind the interesting inventions. I also enjoyed the interview with Dick Van Dyke.
I also bought the other full-screen edition, for the better, natural picture quality. It is not a big difference. Full-screen edition does not have the behind-the-scenes.
The producer of James Bond films gave the Disney team a free hand, but could not restrain himself from interjecting one risque' singing scene with a scantily clad baroness. However, the focus of the scene is humor and a good song. It is a great duet, with some great melodramatic acting. Though the scene would have been better with a modestly dressed baroness.
The rest of the film is a Disney style.

Originally released as The Scooby-Doo Show, the 16 episodes included on this Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! The Complete Third Season compilation were produced for the 1978 Scooby's All-Stars television series. They do not include the characters Scooby-Dum or Scooby-Dee, or any Dynomutt programming. The classic Mystery Inc. gang represented here consists of the original five characters: the preppy, take-charge Fred; somewhat ditsy Daphne; intellectual Velma; and the ever-hungry, nervous, and bumbling Shaggy and Scooby. As the gang travels around the globe to places like China, Scotland, England, and the United States, they invariably stumble into one mystery after another. Ghosts and monsters abound, but the persistence of Fred and Daphne combined with Velma's intellect and Shaggy's and Scooby's uncanny tendency to stumble across vital clues ensures a tidy, down-to-earth solution to even the most other-worldly mysteries. Of course, it's the wit and slapstick humor that make these episodes true classics. A 25-minute, 2006 "Hanna-Barbera: From H to B" featurette follows the program and explores the careers of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera with some very brief original footage of both men and a host of interviews with Hanna-Barbera animators, writers, and voice talent that serve to highlight the two men's individual strengths, tremendous work ethic, and collaborative spirit. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

This is the complete 'Scooby-Doo Show' list. This DVD set is NOT the complete third season it is the complete seventh season. As much as it pains me to do so I must give this inaccurate Scooby Set one star. Come on Hanna-Barbara please do the Scooby DVD's right.
Great DVD set.......2007-07-21
Loved it!! I bought it for my sons ages 6 and 2 who absolutely love Scooby-Doo. Although nothing beats the original Scooby-Doo Where Are You? DVD set, it still brings back Saturday morning memories. It's great because it's something everyone in our family can watch and enjoy together
"That's My Pal!".......2007-07-19
I was very excited to see this, the 3rd season of Scooby Doo Where Are You, available on DVD. I have watched the first two seasons over and over. I was even more excited when I ran down the list of episodes and realized that I hadn't seen most of them! I even found myself laughing out loud at some of the humor in the first couple of episodes. All the shows were great and I can't wait to re-watch them. The breakdown on this two disc set is as follows:
Disc One:
Watch Out! The Willawaw
A Creepy Tangle in the Bermuda Triangle
A Scary Night with a Snow Beast Fright
To Switch a Witch
The Tar Monster
A Highland Fling with a Monstrous Thing
Disc Two Side One:
The Creepy Case of Old Iron Face
Jeepers, It's the Jaguaro (hmmmm, doesn't quite rhyme, does it?)
Make a Beeline Away from That Feline
The Creepy Creature of Vulture's Claw
The Diabolical Disc Demon
Disc Two Side Two:
Scooby's Chinese Fortume Kooky Caper
A Menace in Venice
Don't Go Near the Fortress of Fear
The Warlock of Wimbledon
The Beast is Awake in Bottomless Lake
plus a couple of extras: An interview with people who worked producing the Hanna-Barbera cartoons including footage of Mr Hanna and Mr Barbera. It was actually pretty good. Plus the usual "Hey look at what Scooby Doo DVDs are available" trailer.
A paler shade of Scooby.......2007-07-03
Sorry, but this set is for the dogs. It's like having been served up a packet cake mix after enjoying a really high quality cake made with many rich ingredients. These episodes highlight why the originals were so great with the blend of fabulous backgrounds, detailed drawings, great scripts and the all important "Scooby" music which just oozes atmosphere and makes the whole show gel together. These "lost" episodes were made years after the original series and it's pretty obvious they're just not the same. There are the odd scenes reminiscent of the original but on the whole it's all the excitement of a packet mix plus one egg - the scripts are poor, the scenary is by and large dull and the music is just not right. Let's not get started on how Velma talks - I think she must have taken some slow pills just before recording the dialogue. If you must have it, maybe buy it with a friend to offload some of the disappointment. At least Scrappy wasn't there to make a bland recipe unedible.

I can never stop watching this TV show, I guess I am a big kid at heart.

Description
Shelley Long discovers that when the going gets tough, the tough go camping in Troop Beverly Hills, a comedy about lifestyles of the rich and outrageous. Flamboyantly wealthy Phyllis Nefler (Long) has everything money can buy--a drop-dead Beverly Hills mansion, a classic Rolls, furs, jewelry and designer gowns. The one thing she doesn't have is her husband Freddy (Craig T. Nelson), who's leaving her for good. Maybe. Determined to prove she's still the creative, energetic woman Freddy once loved, Phyllis throws luxury to the wind and becomes leader of her daughter's Wilderness Girls troop. But how much can this chic cookie take before she crumbles? Is saving her marriage really worth trading Gucci bags for sleeping bags--not to mention actually touching bugs? Featuring cameos by Robin Leach, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Pia Zadora, Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Dr. Joyce Brothers, and Cheech Marin, Shelley Long blazes new comic trails in this hilarious trial-by-campfire that leaves the wilderness wilder than ever.

Very Funny - Worth a Look.......2007-08-13
Troop Beverly Hills stars comic genius Shelley Long. She was made to play this role and plays to perfection the spoilt Beverly Hills wife.
The perfect 80's movie. It can't get any better than this.

It arrived in time, and in condition described, however when i watched it, the ending doesn't work! It just freezes & jumps around a little bit, but cant be watched, so that was a shame!
