You've got to give credit to the Hollywood Knights. They may be crass, juvenile, sex-mad pranksters, but they have an open-door policy: nerds and jocks alike are welcome, as long as they show proper disrespect for authority. The Hollywood Knights, a minor 1980 cult comedy poised somewhere between the innocent nostalgia of American Graffiti and the raunchy humor of Animal House, chronicles the antics of a practical-joking high school gang on Halloween night, 1965. In tribute to the last night of their favorite hangout, a Beverly Hills drive-in marked for destruction by the snooty Chamber of Commerce, the gang's court jester Newbomb Turk (Robert Wuhl in his film debut) leads the Knights in an all-out assault on the forces of law and order, conformity, and good taste. Nestled in the parade of toilet humor, fart jokes, mooning rebels, and topless co-eds, however, are the ruminations of the end of an era: the times they are a changin'. The doo-wop and surf soundtrack gives way to Motown, the Mamas and the Papas, and the Byrds as high school sweethearts Tony Danza and Michelle Pfeiffer weather the transition from puppy love to adult romance and Vietnam looms on the horizon. It's a schizophrenic film, bopping from juvenile anarchy to thoughtful drama and back again with a sloppy but energetic drive and a rowdy rebelliousness that will never be accused of sensitivity, decency, or dignity. Fran Drescher, Gary Graham, and a hilarious Stuart Pankin also star. --Sean Axmaker

The hollywood Knights.......2007-08-23
Very funny movie with alot of todays stars when they were young.
The Hollywood Knights.......2007-08-01
Bought as a gift for someone, can't say what I would have thought, but he loved it. Could not find it anywhere, so I said I knew I could...., boy was he surprised when three days later I had it! LOL.
Wuhl is a GAS!.......2007-06-11
Robert Wuhl is the BEST in this funny, funny film (his first film role)! It's Halloween 1965 and the local teen hangout is about to be shut down and demolished by the town council, who can't wait to get rid of the kids (mainly the Hollywood Knights gang) who loiter there. There's lots of great tunes from the era by the Beach Boys, Byrds, Sam the Sham, Motown artists and more.
The scene where Wuhl farts the song "Volare'" in the gym is maybe only 30 seconds long but it's so funny, I had to rewind to see it over and over again! What else does he (as Newbomb Turk) do? Oh, not much...he and some Knights pee in the party punch, tapes some girls in the bathroom, causes a cop's toilet to overflow and "attempts" a sexcapade with Fran Drescher in the back seat.
By the way, Drescher is so incredibly sexy in this film (maybe accidently?), you'll forget all the other stuff she was in (her voice isn't as annoying as it would be in "The Nanny"). She's young and gorgeous with a taut, toned body that you'll be dreamin' about!
My other favorite scenes are with Gailard Sartain as the cop/archenemy of the Knights and Stuart Pankin as the nerdly bandmember/magician/honor student, Dudley. These two character actors add a HUGE part to this movie!
The only disappointing factor in this film is the inclusion of the relationship between Tony Danza and Michelle Pfeiffer. Yeah, Michelle's very pretty and Tony may cause a few female hearts to flutter but their scenes drag the film down...WAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY down! Just as you're on an incredible high from Wuhl's hilarious antics, they cut to the completely unfunny seriousness of Tony and Michelle's fragile relationship. What a drag! It's s'posed to be a funny film but their scenes veer sharply into soap opera territory...blech! Funny thing is, Tony NEVER, EVER appears with Wuhl or any of the other mischief makers in the film - he's not even listed in the closing credits, which leads me to believe his inclusion in the movie was an afterthought, maybe for some star-power thanks to his co-starring stint on "Taxi."
Aside from those EXTREMELY unfunny scenes, I gave it five stars anyway, because there are many, many funny vignettes with Sartain, Pankin, Leigh French, Dick Schaal and many of the others. This is Robert Wuhl at his best! DON'T MISS IT!!!
1965 revisited.......2007-05-18
This movie is a "hoot". I graduated in 1965 and Viet Nam was just in its first stages, the drive in, dance, teacher was all like revisiting my high school graduation. Our class had each one of these characters. When we get down we will definately put in this DVD and have a couple hours of pure laughs.
CLASSIC! ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMEDY FILMS.......2007-04-11
This is a very funny movie. Robert Wuhl is hilarious as Newbomb Turk a rather mischievous horn dog. "Tubby's Drive-in" is where the film centers itself,so there are some mighty fine cars to ogle in this forgotten classic. The DVD transfer id good, I did check this out on a HD channel and it looked incredible.

Harrison Ford lends his solid, perpetually disgruntled presence to Hollywood Homicide, an action comedy in which he's paired with the squinty eyes and peaches-and-cream complexion of Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down, O). Radical French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard would appreciate this complete deconstruction of the buddy-cop flick genre; basic cinematic elements (mismatched partners, a hard-ass superior riding them, arguments about who's going to drive, arguments about intuition vs. diligent detective work, the bad cop who killed Hartnett's father, etc.) have been scrambled and slapped together with no concern for coherence, making clear their innately artificial nature. Sex scenes and car chases come out of nowhere and disappear without consequence, providing arbitrary visual stimulus. During shootouts, it's impossible to tell who got killed or why, underscoring a basic doubt about the purpose of making movies like Hollywood Homicide. It's rare for a mainstream movie to be so daringly (if perhaps accidentally) avant-garde. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
I LOVE THIS MOVIE.......2007-06-16
This is my favorite movie - as a matter of fact, if I were a homocide detective instead of a software salesperson, this could, in fact be my story. Anyone who has ever gotten a real estate license and worked another job understands this far more than the casual viewer. I particularly liked when Harrison Ford is doing a foot chase through LA after a murderer. On the street is a Buyer for a home on which he's negotiating. A counter offer is made by the Buyer and . . . well, you just gotta see it, it's fabulous. I bought this movie and I have loaned it to other realtors who have LOVED IT! This is a MUST SEE!
A fun cop comedy.......2007-04-27
Harrison Ford is very good at his role as a cop and Josh Hartnett is acceptable as his partner. They both have a second job but I still can't figure out how Hartnett is able to afford his Saleen Mustang. That is probably my biggest gripe though. I didn't mind the hip hop soundtrack and the movie is well directed. Isaah Washington plays a crazy record company owner on the run and Dwight Yokam plays his right hand man. Most of the movie is spent on the comedy and I thought that was a good choice. The chemistry with Ford and Hartnett is better than I expected. Ford is pretty good at acting intense, but comedy just seems to come natural to him. The action scenes are well done. There is enough fun in this film to recommend it to just about anybody.
3/5
The picture quality is 100% perfect. I have a weak 5.1 system, but this is the best I have ever heard it sound. There is also a director's commentary on the Columbia TriStar DVD.
Romper Room.......2007-01-07
All in all the story and plotline is very formula; there are good guys that are misunderstood and bad guys that are silly and scared. The good guys chase and chase and chase the bad guys. Will they catch the bad guys? Will the bad guys confess to unbelievable crimes? Or will just once the bad guys get away. Don't hold your breath.
There is an added wrinkle as both Detective Joe Gavilan (Harrison Ford) and his rookie partner Kasey Calden (Josh Hartnett) take care of outside interests while in pursuit.
Mean time it is fun watching this almost cartoon like execution, as they run past all the familiar landmarks out and about Los Angeles, California, USA:
Beverly Hills, Hollywood & Highland, Hollywood, Los Angeles Subway System, Mt. Olympus in Hollywood Hills, Pacific Palisades, Parker Center Police Headquarters -at 150 N. Los Angeles St., Parking Lot, L.A.P.D. Hollywood Station at 1358 Wilcox Ave., Santa Monica, Venice Canals, and Venice.
Hollywood Homicide.......2006-06-28
This is one of the stupidest movies I have ever suffered through. A colossal waste of time.
Oh Solo, why have you forsaken us?.......2006-05-20
Harrison Ford nails it here as a professionally clever, world-weary detective with a heart of gold and a new partner who can't stop squinting when he reads his lines. The razor sharp, whoops I mean razor thin, story and dialogue can be distracting, but never at the expense of making you not hate this movie.
I've added up Ebert's stars for Harrison's last 10 films and it comes out to 3.5. I don;t mean an average of 3.5. I mean 3.5 out of a possible 40 stars. Maybe Harrison should try and branch out a bit, yes?
Now, I'm a bit of a ladies man, so don;t get the wrong idea, but I do find Josh Hartnett to be a very attractive man. In fact, I often find myself having this recurring dream of him. We'll be all like having a light picnic lunch in the park, a nice Sauvignon Blanc to complement our bruschetta and olives, when he leans over to me very closely and says, "Did you know I think you're the most amazing man, I've ever met?" I usually wake up at that point. But Josh if you ever do read this, "Thanks for the compliment, but I'm not interested."

This Movie Will Be Coming To DVD On JAN. 1, 2010!!! It is at Amazon's Other Website Amazon.Ca
Absolutely hysterical, especially for fans of the genre. .......2004-09-23
This really is a fun little movie. If you love those great 50s sci-fi gems this is a must for you. Done in a tongue-in-cheek style "It Came from Hollywood" is a compellation of some of the funniest (unintentionally) scenes from some of the cheesiest movies ever made. Absolutely hysterical, especially for fans of the genre. Highly recommended.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Sadly this was never released on DVD. Various DVD websites have indicated that it was cancelled before it was released. Martin Blythe of Paramount confirmed it in a post at DVD Talk. Paramount took this off of their July 2002 schedule because of those dreaded "clearance problems."
On a down note, through recent correspondence with Paramount I asked if they were planning on revisiting a release of this title sometime in the future and was told "no plans - clearances would be impossible". C'MON PARAMOUNT - NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!
Well, Yes and No.......2004-09-21
I LOVE watching the collection of clips from so-bad-they're-good movies, and the narration is OK to pretty good (Dan Ackroyd's narration is hilarious), but the filmed segments with Ackroyd, Gilda Radner, John Candy and Cheech and Chong are worthless, add nothing to the movie, and should never have been attempted. For serious bad film aficionados, I recommend this thing, but be sure to fast forward through those dumb live action scenes to get to the good (I mean bad) stuff.
Worth renting for sure!.......2004-01-02
I don't know if I would buy this but it's definitely worth renting if you like the wit of the old SNL cast. Gilda Radner is great as well as John Candy, even Dan Akroyd is good even though he usually bothers me for a reason I still can't figure out. Cheech and Chong are very, very funny and I didn't even like them in the old days so that says something - somebody obviously held them back just a little bit (but not too much) and in this film it really works - there are some very funny parts. As for the clips of the various B movies they are GREAT - not too long but not too short. They give you just enough of each of these horrible movies without you getting bored (ever sat through the entire Killer Tomatoes?, if so you'll know what I mean). In retrospect I really can't complain about this film at all. I think they did a really good job of it and it's definitely worth a watch.
"What were they thinking?!?".......2003-05-21
That's what you will ask yourself while you watch the worst collection of films ever made for audiences ever! You'll get a kick out of seeing how cheesy the sets and costumes were, and of course, they give a big HATS OFF! to Ed Wood, "King of the D Movie." Only for those who think today's movies are lousy -- think you have it bad now? Watch what audiences during the 50s-71 had to deal with!!
