Miss Potter walks that fine line between charming and cloying with pleasing sure-footedness. Apple-cheeked Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones' Diary) once again slips into a British accent to play writer/illustrator Beatrix Potter, the creator of Peter Rabbit. Potter, born into wealth, fought the disapproval of her high society mother to do something as crass as publish a book...and to fall in love with her publisher, Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor, previously teamed with Zellweger in Down With Love). Unfortunately, their love runs into something worse than upper-class stuffiness. Miss Potter skips through Potter's life a bit too briskly at times, but Zellweger's thankfully restrained performance, McGregor's infinite charm, and some beautiful shots of the English landscape keep the movie grounded and engaging. Also featuring a crackling supporting performance by Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) as Warne's sister Millie. --Bret Fetzer

Description

(Drama) The story of Beatrix Potter, the author of the beloved and best-selling children's book, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", and her struggle for love, happiness and success.

5 out of 5 stars under rated Movie!!.......2007-09-14

This movie is so under rated!! It is wonderfully acted, a true story of love heart break and triumph!! if you are a hopeless romantic and a champion of the under dog you will love this movie- it is not, a story of bunnies and children's books!! Renee Zellwiger is an unbeleivable actress!!! Ewan McGregor once again shines in teaming up with Renee!!

4 out of 5 stars Rating of Miss Potter DVD overall.......2007-09-13

I enjoyed the beautifully filmed and acted story of Beatrix Potter and also the additional information on her life and legacy. However, the DVD as a whole loses one star (I am tempted to subtract two) for the annoying intrusion of 15 minutes of commercials at the start.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Potter is a touching true story.......2007-09-11

I enjoyed this biography very much and have watched it several times. It is very nice to see a movie that does not have the violence that seems to be so popular with the public today. I dislike violence for violence's sake.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Family Film.......2007-09-08

This is one of our favorite movies. It is a wholesome love story, based on the life of Beatrix Potter and her "bunny story" plus others. The setting is 1902 with crisp, beautiful city and country scenery. Miss Potter is not happy in settling with a husband selected by her mother and maintains her independence, being happy in her drawing and writing. When her first book is accepted for publication, she meets the love of her life Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor), her publisher. Of course, Miss Potter's mother doesn't view him as acceptable and wishes that her daughter wouldn't bring trades people into their home and the story unfolds. The actors are great. I recognized some actors from another favorite - Lorna Doone. You won't want to miss the song that Ewan McGregor sings, when he is teaching Renee Zellweger to dance. Beatrix Potter gave 4,000 acres of land to the people of Britain when she died, saving it from developers. The only negative that others who have seen the film have to offer is that some have a problem with Renee Zellweger's facial expressions and find them distracting. I didn't find this to be a problem for me and loved all of the expressions.

5 out of 5 stars Good clean movie..........2007-09-08

Can be viewed with the family.Cute movie about Beatrix Potter. It is the story of her life shortly before she became famous. The hardship of being an unmarried woman and a writer is told in good fashion. It is not a complete story about her though. I think it could be labeled as a mid-section of her life. It is kinda long and slow but worth seeing.

First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars A series of incidents without any real storytelling.......2007-08-20

I can't understand the fascination with Potter! First of all, I took two Children's Literature courses in college when I was studying to be an English teacher, and was forced to read the first book. I never read it because I couldn't make it through the first page as it was the most boring page of words I'd ever read before. During the open-book test on the book, because I was FORCED TO, I painfully read through almost the entire book in one sitting in order to come up with the answers, this is how ridiculously easy the book is to read. I was horrified that I didn't like the book either, even after I did read it during testing; I was horrified because like another reviewer said: "I don't quite understand this Harry Potter phenomenon." You see, that makes me believe that either I'm crazy and everyone else is sane, or that I'm sane and everyone else is crazy! Anyhow, when I was young we didn't read books this stupid. Really. Even if they were childrens' books, we read classics, like Alice in Wonderland, which is much more complex, imaginative, and meaningful. To sum up, I did watch the first film and I didn't think it was bad; however, this one really bored me, especially near the end. I could not force myself to watch the ending, even after wasting time by watching most of it to begin with! I commented to my husband that the movie seemed to be one series of "surprises" and "coincidences" that kept it going, no real plot, just a series of occurences. I can't say this is storytelling, although to some it may be -- it's cheap storytelling, not masterful in the least, and it's hardly got any redeeming qualities to it. I'm just sorry in the end that such stuff is being revered by children today when great classics are being ignored.

Kenneth Branagh's 1993 production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is a vigorous and imaginative work, cheerful and accessible for everyone. Largely the story of Benedick (Branagh) and Beatrice (Emma Thompson)--adversaries who come to believe each is trying to woo the other--the film veers from arched wit to ironic romps, and the two leads don't mind looking a little silly at times. But the plot is also layered with darker matters that concern the ease with which men and women fall into mutual distrust. Branagh has rounded up a mixed cast of stage vets and Hollywood stars, among the latter Denzel Washington and Michael Keaton, the latter playing a rather seedy, Beetlejuice-like version of Dogberry, king of malapropisms. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks or subtitles.--Tom Keogh

Adapted by Oscar® nominee* Kenneth Branagh and featuring an all-star cast, this charming romp "casts the battle of the sexes in the form of an elegant dance" (The New York Times). For that matter, can another couple's devotion survive the evil Don John's (Keanu Reeves) vicious lies? It's up to the blundering constable (Michael Keaton) to save the day so that the course of true love may yet run smooth! *1989: Director, Actor, Henry V; 1992: Short Film-Live Action, Swan Song; 1996: Adapted Screenplay, Hamlet

5 out of 5 stars Who said there was one better playwright than Shakespeare?.......2007-08-27

Shakespeare and his entangled love affairs are as famous as Dracula and his blood cult. But we recognize here the friar who advises a fake death to the girl and we remember that Romeo and Juliet came first in 1596. Shakespeare started with the tragedy around the clandestine marriage of the two heroes, and then moved on to a comedy that sounds at time very tragic, Much Ado About Nothing in 1598, and he doubles the merriment by having two weddings. And he will go on with As You Like It in 1600 and its four marriages under the auspices of the thrice crowned goddess Diana. And this was a model of perfection that he had kept from A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1594. But this present comedy could have been a drama at least if not a tragedy since the death being false, based on a false accusation what's more, could have led to a duel and one real death before being discovered as a fake, and it leads to the arrest of the villain who had arranged the fakery so that a happy love wedding was turned into a dramatic denunciation of the impurity of the bride. That's probably why he doubled the first line of action with a second that reminds us of The Taming of the Shrew (1593) and that second line will lead to the second marriage that will bring everyone, except the plotter, to merriment, gaiety and dancing. But this production is admirable because the setting of the play in a real garden and rich mansion in more or less renaissance clothing though it could be slightly more recent gives to the actors all the space they need to dance, play, hide, run, and many other things. The acting is admirable and they really make the language sing the way it should, sing joy as well as pain, sing sadness as well as happiness. Of course the language is also a little bit difficult but we get used to it very fast and we follow the music of it as well as the words, and the actors were directed into speaking as if they were singing, to the point of even having a failed attempt at real singing that sounds like a cat being disemboweled. And the final but suspended lack of clemency against the guilty plotter is there to remind us that everything may end with songs and dances, but there is always some drama to bring to an end sooner or later, and in that case outside the time limits of the play. But yet I always wonder about what such comedies, or tragedies like Romeo and Juliet, could look like in Shakespearean times when women were not allowed on the stage. So many girls played by teenagers must have been funny, with an echo in the play when Beatrice speaks of men with a beard or men without a beard and the latter are less of a man than she would ever like. That was said by a man without a beard in 1598. I guess we would find it funny and even maybe ridiculous today. But it should be attempted. Shakespeare played on the situation quite often with varying motivations.

4 out of 5 stars a genuine, lively success and a delight.......2007-07-29

I got this for my daugter, now 12, to nurture her love of drama. At this, this fine rendition was an absolute success: she is watching it and memorising the language, drinking it in with the excitment and exuberance of a child. It is wonderful to behold and precisely why I got this film.

Branagh's adaptation is lush and splendidly well arranged. The only flaw, in my opinion, is Keanu Reeves, who simply fails to project any soul into his role. He just isn't of the same caliber as the rest of the cast. Denzel Washington is wonderful as the prince, quite a surprise - I think he is America's greatest acting talent, yet again.

Warmly recomended. It transmits the magic of Shakespeare into the young mind and allows us parents to re-live the brutal ups and downs of young love. I was moved, by the story but also by watching the delight of my daughter in the whole experience.

5 out of 5 stars Much Ado About Nothing Review.......2007-07-20

I really enjoy this movie. Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh are excellent! I like the quick wit from these two characters and from the rest of the characters, especially the constable (Michael Keaton). I would definitely recommend this movie if you like this genre and you want something that you need to actually pay attention to. It is definitely helpful to watch the movie more than once to catch all the intricacies of the dialog.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-07-11

This is a great film to introduce shakespeare to preteens to shakespeare or early teens. Be aware of nudity in intro and gratutious scene mid way not neded for kids. I praise ken for most of his shakespear adaptations. I always use his stuff to teach bill shakespear.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite zombie film, with one minor complaint..........2007-09-14

I'll get the complaint out of the way first... THE EDITED SOUNDTRACK! I know it seems minor, and compared to what Warner Bros. did to Part II, it's miniscule, but I'm still kind of irked that MGM can't seem to correct the soundtrack from their original DVD release. This IS, after all, one of my favorite movie soundtracks ever. It only happens in three scenes, and two of them are just shortened. The only one that's actually replaced is 'The Damned' - 'Dead Beat Dance', that originally played in the scene when the group is going to pick up Freddy... Why they edited and replaced some songs, I have no idea. Possibly something to do with the rights. So I'm glad 'Return of the Living Dead' was one of the few VHS's I didn't sell... Wish I could say the same about Part II. Although the sequel is nowhere NEAR as clever or horrifying...

SPOILERS

Still, the movie remains the classic it was in '84. I'll give a brief plot synopsis. Freddy is being given the rundown on life in the MEDICAL SUPPLY WAREHOUSE business (the back of the package says it's an Army surplus store) by his boss, Frank. The two unwittingly unleash a toxic chemical developed by the Army that causes the dead to become reanimated. On their way to pick up Freddy from his first day on the job, his punk-rock friends decide to stop off in the loacal cemetary and the horror ensues, especially when our would-be victims discover that these zombies are a little harder to kill then the ones George Romero cooked up in his classic 'Night of the Living Dead', of which this might be considered a very loose spin-off... Along with some GREAT tombstone action from Linnea Quigley, there's also a fair deal of humor along the way, but I gotta admit... This movie still gives me chills. Far more so than any other zombie movies, with the exception of Romero's films. The zombie interrogation scene, where the zombie explains that it hurts to be dead, and you can feel yourself rot... I mean, just the IDEA of that STILL creeps me out. Although the reaction to this from Spider always gets a laugh out of me. Also, the ending is pretty chilling. The Army's "plan" is classic, and in a way, coldly realistic.

The cast and characters are excellent. Everybody in the film hands in a memorable performance. I really love Clu Gulager in this. I mean, his portrayal of the average middle-aged joe, with that old members-only jacket and everything (Did anyone else's dad used to wear that? Besides Al Bundy, I mean...), suddenly cast into this incredible situation is a sight to behold. I think the rest of the cast is just as great, but he makes this working-class guy so memorable.

The picture and audio of the DVD and all that stuff is perfect. I already had the other DVD, but I got this one hoping the soundtrack would be corrected, but I gotta say the two featurettes more than justified it. I'm glad they were able to get interviews with so many of the cast members. Anyway, I first saw the film probably about fifteen years ago, I've seen it numerous times since then, and it's still one of the funnest horror flicks I've ever seen. Definately in my top 5.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2007-09-12

If you never seen Return of the Living Dead in your whole life, then get this. Most likely your going to enjoy it. I'll give a brief summary to those who haven't seen this. It combines the zombie thriller with some mild comedy. Its very serious but has its comedic side. Two workers tamper with a canister that contains a chemical which brings the dead to life. The dead then begin to feast on the living, by eating their brains. A group of teenagers have their night of partying in a cemetary turned into a nightmare. They spend most of the night trying to survive with the help of a couple of others. Its a very good movie with a pretty good soundtrack. Like I said, if you never seen it before then you'll most likely enjoy it.

Now the part I really want to hit. I'm sick to death of amazon allowing people to review and rate an item, whether its high or low before it even comes out. It can be so misleading. This has gotten way out of hand. And getting worse as of late. These first three reviews couldn't be anymore off. The same alterations on the first movie, still exist here! Such as shortened songs(Franks cremation), songs playing late(when they escape the tar zombie), and the zombie who orders to send more cops. Still does not have the original voice!

The extras are a waste of time to me. They consist of commentary, trailers, to this movie and for some dumb reason jeepers creepers 1&2. And hidden in the special features. There is an icon the shape of a red brain. If you scroll up you will hit this. This is the "zombies thought" option. This option allows you to read the zombies thoughts in a green text located in the bottom of the screen. Basically when the zombies are not talking, this subtitle will pop in every single zombie scene. Literally expressing their thoughts. This could have been cool and added a new sense of creepiness. But they kill it by adding lines such as, "brains are good, but could use more ketchup though". The scene with the paramedics heading to the van, "I got dibs on the one on the left","lets party", "being a cadaver sucks". Or something stupid to that effect. It even went so far to give the split dog some dialogue. The chopped up body inside the bags was still dishin' out ridiculous thoughts. Some funny but then eventually I was thinking. Who's dumb idea was this? It just got to the point I had to shut it off because it really didn't add nothing to the movie. I mean, I just don't believe zombies would say s*** like that.

If you already have this movie, then I recommend not wasting your money. Your buying the same thing twice. But then again its your cash, if you really need this widescreen or your just curious then pick it up. Personally, I feel like I wasted my money.

Edit; 9-13-07
I don't want to confuse any potential buyers in the slighest. It appears by the comments that were left. Some things were left out. So I'll address these questions openly.

If you seen ROTLD and liked or loved it but don't own it. Either on DVD or VHS then of course you should get it, if you don't have it. Especially if you loved it. I love the movie in its original form. Not this right here, thus my 2 star rating! No there is no extended version. Its the exact same movie from the original DVD format. If you never seen this on vhs then you won't exactly understand the differences. Fans of the original will know what I'm talking about. Some may feel its nitpicking but I don't care. And many others don't care if its nitpicking. Thats the way the movie is suppose to be.

5 out of 5 stars A MAJOR MOMENT in MODERN HORROR CINEMA!!!!.......2007-09-02

Although it is overlooked by many horror fans, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is a very important film for it updates the "zombie movie" into a fully mature sub-genre inside horror cinema. We all know Romero's great trilogy NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, DAWN OF THE DEAD and DAY OF THE DEAD. These were great films for they were the true beginning of the "zombie movie". But in the 80's, the zombies lost terrain to the slasher movies (in the FRIDAY THE 13th tradition) and more compeling villains (in the Fred Krueger tradition).

Being a zombie fan, O'Bannon knew that the zombies needed an updating. This is why RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is so important: it brought the zombies into the 80's character/action oriented horror films. With this thought, he wrote a great screenplay that rewrote the "zombie genesis". So, in this film, the zombies of George A. Romero are refered as a mild version of something that was really true: a chemical accident in India that ended as an Army cover-up operation; and the Romero's zombies just a way of putting it into films without being bothered by the U.S. Army.

Having established that point, O'Bannon introduces us to the REAL zombies: living dead that talk and move (they run!) just as living people do. They are extremely dangerous because they are not those dumb slow-moving zombies people used to walk through (like in the Romero's films). They are also intelligent as they devise ways of getting what they want - brains. And this is where O'Bannon makes a new wonderful twist: the zombies do not die by destroying their brains (for they are already dead and the brain has nothing to do with it). Instead it is the zombies who try to eat living brains!

Having said that, it is also important to point that the screenplay is a beautiful piece of cinematic storytelling for two reasons. FIRST because the whole story works flawlessly in the sense that the inicial incident, the characters' actions and the consequences are very well constructed. SECOND because the story weaves a sense of loneliness and confinement (I am talking about the way they treat the narrative space in relation to the story) that works wonders with the characters and what happens with them (this treatment of space echoes Romero's masterpiece DAWN OF THE DEAD).
The ending is great (so great that the sequels didn't touch it)and the soundtrack is very good. The actors are well cast and the film boasts a lot of dry humour.

The extras in this DVD special edition are fine and they show that a good edition of a film who's by now more that 20 years old is a matter of wanting it. Congratulations to MGM! RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is not the best horror movie ever, but inside the zombie sub-genre it is one of the best things ever made. Scarry and fun!

The only flaw (for me) in this movie is a female zombie who speaks without lips. I never found it credible.
But who cares!?!?!?

OK, let's get all the disclaimers out of the way first. Despite its colorful (if crude) animation, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is in no way meant for kids. It is chock full of profanity that might even make Quentin Tarantino blanch and has blasphemous references to God, Satan, Saddam Hussein (who's sleeping with Satan, literally), and Canada. It's rife with scatological humor, suggestive sexual situations, political incorrectness, and gleeful, rampant vulgarity. And it's probably one of the most brilliant satires ever made. The plot: flatulent Canadian gross meisters Terrance and Philip hit the big screen, and the South Park quartet of third graders--Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman--begin repeating their profane one-liners ad infinitum. The parents of South Park, led by Kyle's overbearing mom, form "Mothers Against Canada," blaming their neighbors to the north for their children's corruption and taking Terrance and Philip as war prisoners. It's up to the kids then to rescue their heroes from execution, not mention a brooding Satan, who's planning to take over the world.

To give away any more of the plot would destroy the fun, but this feature-length version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Comedy Central hit is a dead-on and hilarious send-up of pop culture. And did we mention it's a musical? From the opening production number "Mountain Town" to the cheerful antiprofanity sing-along "It's Easy, MMMKay" to Satan's faux-Disney ballad "Up There," Parker (who wrote or cowrote all the songs) brilliantly shoots down every earnest musical from Beauty and the Beast to Les Misérables. And in advocating free speech and satirizing well-meaning but misguided parental censorship groups (with a special nod to the MPAA), Bigger, Longer & Uncut hits home against adult paranoia and hypocrisy with a vengeance. And the jokes, while indeed vulgar and gross, are hysterical; we can't repeat them here, especially the lyrics to Terrance and Philip's hit song, but you'll be rolling on the floor. Don't worry, though--to paraphrase Cartman, this movie won't warp your fragile little mind. Unless you have something against the First Amendment. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars A wild farce of a time........2007-09-05

South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut is a different type of movie. It puts a new spin on musicals, comedies, and cartoon movies. It's a wild ride from start to finish.

The fans of the show will be delighted to see the antics of characters like Satan and Terrence and Philip. The other small characters make appearanes.

The story is just as brilliant as the songs. It's one of the funniest I've seen. As for animated films, it would be more highly praised if it weren't for the bad language. But what is South Park without it.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars It was funny.......2007-06-18

This movie was hillarious from start to finish. They talked about some stuff that didn't really make sense to me but the rest was funny. South Park fans will laugh there F****** A**'s off. If you love the show you will love this movie. South Park is the best animated comedy ever.

5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2007-05-19

To start this movie is the worste animated, rudest and full of swears. Yet I am not joking when I say this movie is truly a masterpiece.

The plot is quite hilarious and well thought out. At every point in the film is a laugh or two. Playing the movie over again, you may laugh even at stuff you missed the first time.

This movie is terribly overlooked in an important department, music. This film has some of the best music composition Ive ever heard. The film can almost be called a musical.... hell it is a musical. Every song is truly catchy. La Resistence is my personal favorite song.

This movie is not only funny but very smart. It is a guilty treat that never gets old. Do not over look this movie because of profanity.

5 out of 5 stars South Park At Its Finest!.......2007-05-09

If you are a fan of South Park, then you will absolutely LOVE this movie. I continually watch this DVD over and over and the jokes are never old. Was surprised the first time I saw it, to find it was a South Park Musical. The songs are sung and written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and you will find yourself singing them long after the DVD is out of the player. Buy it, you will have no regrets!

This B movie with noble aspirations is the work of a gifted filmmaker whose storytelling falls short of his considerable stylistic flair. While addressing crises of faith in the framework of an alien-invasion thriller, M. Night Shyamalan (in his follow-up to The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) favors atmospheric tension over explanatory plotting. He injects subtle humor into expertly spooky scenes, but the story suffers from too many lapses in logic. The film's faults are greatly compensated by the performance of Mel Gibson as a widower whose own crisis of faith coincides with the appearance of mysterious crop circles in his Pennsylvania cornfield... and hundreds of UFOs around the globe. With his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and two young children (Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin), the lapsed minister perceives this phenomenal occurrence as a series of signs and portents, while Shyamalan pursues a spookfest with War of the Worlds overtones. It's effective to a point, but vaguely hollow at its core. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director of THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE, comes the story of the Hess family in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who wake up one morning to find a 500-foot crop circle in their backyard. Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) and his family are told extraterrestrials are responsible for the sign in their field. They watch, with growing dread, the news of crop circles being found all over the world. SIGNS is the emotional story of one family on one farm as they encounter the terrifying last moments of life as the world is being invaded. "It's easy for a filmmaker to blow up the world -- but what Shyamalan does is much riskier. He tries to blow our minds. I was engaged by every inch of SIGNS." - Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper.

5 out of 5 stars THE WAY TO TELL THE WORLD THAT THEY'RE OUT THERE!!.......2007-09-02

i loved this movie, the whole deal. peaceful community, normal family, then bam, a huge crop circle right on thier farm. what is it? where did it come from? who made it? not human, they're watching, and they're coming, but not in peace. this movies got great suspense, good visual, and the aliens look crazy freaky. every time i watch it it still gets me. mostly because all this about crop circles is for real, it's based on real life events. so then what's going to happen in the future. who knows? mel gibson is a great actor no doubt and in this film it shows, as with joaquin phoenix great actor as well. love him. once again m. night shyamalan knows how to do it. he tries to bring more than others to the table through his films and he always succeeds. great job.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie and some good extra features!.......2007-08-04

The movie was great. When I got a gift card for Christmas one year I knew this was the DVD I wanted to buy. It's one of M Night Shyamalan's best movies (I even think it was better than Sixth Sense).

The DVD has an neat bonus footage on it - like a movie made by MNS when he was a kid. It's great to see his vision as a child and how far he has grown. The DVD also has a nice story board to scene feature for certain parts of the movie. It's kinda neat to see how the finished product stacked up against the story boards.

However with a movie with this much humor I would have loved to seen some bloopers or outtakes. But then again I say that about every movie.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite M. Night Shyamalan film........2007-07-31

I love thrillers, sci-fi, and spiritual/moral dilemma films and who would think that one film would have all that I grave.

Amazon gives a good snynopsis of the story, so no need to repeat it here, but I greatly disagree with their notion that this film is somewhat hollow or empty which I find ironic after they mention all this film is about and the crisis of faith that comes to a head with Mel Gibson's fallen minister character. This film is extremely well-written, outstandingly acted by all familiar actors who disappear into their roles, and effectively directed by Shyamalan who also wrote the film. James Newton Howard, ER and The Sixth Sense, created the memorable and haunting score which greatly added to the atmosphere of the film. In addition, the special effects and make-up team, guided by Shyamalan's vision and direction, created chills and believability without massive Spielberg-style (War of the Worlds) treatment which would have been only a distraction in this film.

My only real criticism is that this film has Shyamalan's trademark approach. That means that it's all rather contrived and he hammers us at the end for not seeing the ending coming (yet again, a la The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable). However, to pick on this element of his directorial/writing style is like picking on Hitchcock's use of suspense in his classic films.

This film has great repeat value even after knowing how the "signs" all add up. This is one of my absolute favorite films of all time. You may not enjoy it as much as I did, but I sincerely believe that most will enjoy this film for one reason or another.

5 out of 5 stars Are you the type who sees signs?.......2007-06-18

Signs has much more to offer than Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds." In this reality, the world is populated with numerous signs seemingly hidden in plain sight.

Director M. Night Shyamalan divides people into two camps: The type who believes in miracles, sees signs; and those who think we just get lucky.

Shyamalan's carefully crafted universe has creatures that must resort to warring with other planets to survive... and there is us. Shyamalan's war pits technologically superior creatures against an unsuspecting world, and a shattered world occupied by a clergyman who questions his faith following the death of his wife. Shyamalan goes further than the Sixth Sense, the bone-chilling tale of a young boy ("I see dead people") haunted by ghosts who appear regularly in his life to enlist his help. In Signs, Shyamalan declares not only can we help the dead, the dead also help us.

Another way of putting it: There are no coincidences. From the son's asthma and the daughter's dreams to the brother's baseball prowess and the tragic instance in which a veterinarian's momentary lapse at the wheel claims a life. The plot is a masterpiece in misdirection. Signs opens to an aerial view of crop circles. More signs of the impending invasion appear as the story moves forward. But these are not the signs that we should be looking at. In the last reel, the dying wife who has but a moment to tell seems to be rambling. But it turns out, she was staring into the future, not her husband's eyes.

This movie says we are much more than we seem.

Mel Gibson's character, the grieving Rev. Graham Hess finds himself suddenly struggling to make sense of the many odd happenings at his farm. He already has isolated himself following his wife's death. Of course, his guard is up. But he finds himself awkwardly grasping to cling to his understanding of the new reality. He can dismiss the crop circles in his fields as mischief by pranksters. But, he soon can't deny the mounting evidence and nocturnal visits from unseen and unseeable intruders. Edgy, provocative and well-paced, Signs is a multilayered and intricately woven piece to try and digest in an afternoon at the theater.

I was first struck by Shyamalan's study of how his characters cope with the increasingly apparent threat. The no-nonsense son Morgan immediately seeks out a book and a curious and chilling element to this story, a baby monitor. The brother Merrill who has taken a room over the garage to help the family turns to the TV. The youngest, the girl who must be about kindergarten age, believes she is dreaming. It is the father, Graham, who is not coping well living in denial. But who can blame him?

"There is no one out there to help us. We're all alone," our resigned and frockless clergyman declares.

The final scenes are well-constructed to induce fear. Shyamalan masterfully pulls all the pieces together at the end. If you were impressed by Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, you will enjoy this offering... again and again.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent film from theSci-Fi genre.......2007-06-13

This is one of those films that my wife dragged me kicking and screaming to see in the theater, but as has often been the case over our thirty-six year marriage, it turned out to be one that I would end up adding to my collection.

Normally, Science-Fiction films either bore me greatly, or scare me out of my wits, but this story is quite different. Not only is this a well-made, tense and exciting story of an attempted alien invasion of Earth, but it is also a very touching and actually inspirational story. Mel Gibson plays a former minister who totally lost his faith as the result of his wife's tragic death, but eventually finds it once again as a result of an exciting encounter with aliens. Beginning with the appearance of "crop circles" in his corn field, then in other locales around the world, followed soon by other strange "signs," Gibson finds himself trapped by the aliens in his home, with his two small children and his younger brother, played well by Joaquin Phoenix.

If you have not seen the film, do so. If you have not added it to your collection, do so. The climax alone is worth the purchase price, and it is surely a film you can watch with your children.

4 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY CARTOON VIDEO !!.......2007-09-03

This is one of the coolest holiday collections in Disney history. Three stories are included on this dvd.

The first one, I hate so i don't remember the title. But it's a very depressing story about a boy and his donkey.

The second one is a Chip N' Dale CLASSIC that features, Mickey & Pluto. (Pluto's Christmas Tree) I personally am a HUGE fan of the Chip N' Dale cartoons, simply because they are silly without losing their comedic value. I laugh THINKING about it.

The last one is truly the best: Mickey's Christmas Carol. I bought two copies of this movie and sent one to my friend's little boy because I loved it so much.

It's based on the Charles Dickens classic: A Christmas Carol and sticks to the script the whole way through. The cast of characters do an excellent job portraying all the original characters in the book! Mickey as Bob Cratchett, Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer Scrooge of course, Goofy as the ghost of Jacob Marley, and even Donald Duck shows an excellent performance in the ALMOST miscast role of Scrooge's light-hearted, warm loving NEPHEW! LOL

The ONLY reason I didn't give this movie 5 stars is because of the depressing "donkey cartoon" in the beginning. I promise you it will be a joy for your family for years to come!

*PLEASE EXCUSE ALL SPELLING ERRORS!!*

4 out of 5 stars "A DVD to Remember".......2007-06-18

This DVD has Pluto's Christmas Tree with those lovable chipmunks, Chip 'n' Dale. It also has Mickey's Christmas Carol which I remember watching every year on television growing up in the eighties. This DVD is worth it for those two alone. I have not seen The Small One. What would have made this perfect is if they would have also included the short where Donald is aggravated by his nephews and so a snow fight ensues (forget the actual name of the short). I remember they would air this one on tv as well right before Mickey's Christmas Carol to fill up the entire hour time slot. Still, this release is a must-have for anyone who grew up with these fond memories as a child. Just the music and singing in Mickey's Christmas Carol is enough to warm my heart.

5 out of 5 stars I bought it for ONE reason only.......2007-02-28

I have two favorite Christmas Specials from when I was young - 1) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the animated short, not the Jim Carrey movie) and 2) Mickey's Christmas Carol.

The Grinch is still shown (usually) each year, but it's been a number of years since I'd seen Mickey's Christmas Carol and I had to have it. Yes, it's the same old Dicken's story, but there are some CLASSIC moments (Goofy as Marley saying Scrooge will be visited by 3 ghosts but he's only holding up 2 fingers).

One of my favorite versions of the Dicken's classic.

5 out of 5 stars I JUST LOVE IT.......2007-02-01

I HAD THE VHS VERSION, AND WE WATCH IT EVERY YEAR.
I LIKE THE THREE STORIES, BUT SMALL ONE IS MY FAVORITE

I WONDER WHEN CAN I FIND THIS DVD ON SPANISH.??

THIS DVD IS ALSO IN SPANISH?

Paul Newman shines as cocky poolroom hustler "Fast" Eddie Felson in Robert Rossen's atmospheric adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel. Newman's Felson is a swaggering pool shark punk who takes on the king of the poolroom, Minnesota Fats (a cool, assured Jackie Gleason in his most understated performance). After losing big and crashing into a void of self-pity, Eddie meets down-and-out Sarah (Piper Laurie in a delicate performance), an alcoholic blue blood who's dropped into Eddie's world of dingy bars and seedy poolrooms. Eddie regains his confidence and attracts the attention of a shifty, calculating promoter, Bert Gordon (George C. Scott at his most heartless), who offers to bring Eddie into the big money--but at what cost? Rossen brings his film to life with the easy pace of a pool game, giving his actors room to explore their characters and develop into a razor-sharp ensemble. Eugen Schüfftan earned an Academy Award for his shadowing black-and-white cinematography, as did art directors Harry Horner and Gene Callahan for their deceivingly simple set designs. Even in the daylight this film seems to be smothered by night, lit by the dim glow of a bar lamp or the overhead glare of a pool-table light, an appropriate environment for this tale of one man's struggle with his soul and his self-esteem. Newman returned as an older, wiser, cagier Felson 25 years later in Martin Scorsese's Color of Money. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Paul Newman heads a superb cast featuring Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott and Piper Laurie in the riveting film that received an Academy Award(r) nomination as Best Picture of 1961 and brought all four of its Oscar(r) nomination. Newman (Best Actor nominee) is electrifying as Fast Eddie Felson, an arrogant, amoral hustler who haunts backstreet pool rooms fleecing anyone who'll pick up a cue. Determined to be acclaimed as the best, Eddie seeks out the legendary Minnesota Fats (Gleason, Supporting Actor nominee), who's backed by Bert Gordon (Scott, Supporting Actor nominee), a predatory gambler. Eddie can beat the champ, but virtually defeats himself with his low self-image. The love of a lonely woman (Laurie, Best Actress nominee) could turn Eddie's life around, but he won't rest until he beats Minnesota Fats, no matter what price he must pay. Voted one of the year's ten best by "The New York Times" and "Time," and distinguished by 2 Academy Awards- Cinematography, Art Direction-Set Decoration (B&W), The Hustler is a dazzling cinematic triumph.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Hustler-Great Movie........2007-08-28

The movie is a timeless classic. It was Paul Newman's breakout role and Jackie Gleason's performance as Minisota Fats is flawless. Other standout performances are Piper Laurie as Newman's "girl" and Geroge C. Scott as the slimey promoter. It's great to see this movie in all it's glory again, I recommend it highly!!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-08-09

Another traditional classic, even if you are not a pool player or fan, worth the time, Gleason in an excellent dramatic role, and Paul, what else needs to be said. Very timeless and holds up well.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best films in the history of cinema........2007-07-30

The metaphorical and allegorical depth of this film can't be described in words. It is a cinematic experience that has the power to change lives. It surely changed mine (for the better).

The film asks these questions: "What is winning? What is losing? What is character?" These questions are slowly and painstakingly answered. The last scene of the film sums it all up with stark and painful clarity. It is a morality play like no other. In my opinion, "The Hustler" is an undeniably brilliant film which has the power to remind us - continuously - that personal integrity is what counts most in life.

Without integrity, winning means nothing and character cannot be attained. With it, a man or woman "wins" no matter what the final score of any game might be. Paul Newman's character, "Fast Eddie", says it all in the end when he states, "How can I lose?", during the last scene of the film. Watch it and you'll see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars The Hustler - Still a classic.......2007-07-19

What else can you say? Paul Newman as the fallable Eddie Felson, Jackie Gleason as the great Minnesota Fats....even a cameo by billiards legend Willie Mosconi brings back memories of an era long since gone. If you haven't seen this (perhaps living in a cave), you must!

5 out of 5 stars TWO OTHER TITLES THAT SHOULD HAVE COME OUT.......2007-07-12

As much as I love this film, and all of the actors, I just wish that instead of releasing a new version of this title SO SOON after the first version came out, two other titles featuring these two great actors should see the light of day. Newmans "SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION", and Gleasons "SOLDIER IN THE RAIN", should really be released. If you have seen these films, you know what I mean. I would love to hear Paul tell about "SOMETIMES...", on a comentary track, along with a film expert, and what a great cast it has. It never would have been made if it wasn`t for him. And "Soldier..." with a young Steve McQueen as well as the GREAT ONE, is also up there in my book. So please, who ever is the powers that be, please try to get these two titles released.
