Superior sports drama. Today's youth have a lot to learn from Gracie Bowen.......2007-08-13
I know what you are probably thinking. You're thinking something like, "Oh, Great! Just what we don't need. Another underdog sports movie!" Well, before dismissing this film as such, you might want to watch it really carefully and take some time out to think about a few things. The heart that Gracie displays in this film is something that every youth needs to see, and exhibit, today, especially in light of how "lazy" today's youth seem to be. Especially with how they seem to expect to have everything handed to them on a silver platter. Well, I'm sorry to report on the reality, but victory does not come this way. It only comes with determination and perseverence, which Gracie demonstrated to the maximum degree. This film also made me realize that both women and minorities have absolutely NOTHING to complain about in today's world. What Gracie faced in 1978 was REAL sexism and descrimination. Hey, I'm a guy and I thought it completely unfair the way she was treated and I was rooting for her all the way!
This film also reminded me of "Invincible", about the true story of Vince Papale who, although being up in years, got a chance to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. After viewing both "Gracie" and "Invincible", I'm left to thinking that there is not a coach or recruiter alive today that would not give their arm and leg for players like Gracie Bowen and Vince Papale--players who have HEART and really LOVE the game they play, and are not just a couple of posers who are just in it for the money and fame.
Bottom line is, I highly recommend this film. The acting is convincing and the story is very inspiring. Well worth at least one viewing
Solid plotting in a genuine story of reality and triumph.......2007-07-24
The fact that this quiet yet beautiful gem of a film was released on the same weekend as the summer blockbuster "Knocked Up" may give some indication as to why it came and went relatively quickly in the theaters. Still, if you saw the previews for this and/or went to see it when it came out, chances are you agree that it was an impressively well-told story of courage, redemption, and the realization that life simply is never perfect, regardless of how much effort is put forth.
Contemporary sport films have become a distinctive genre that is all their own, and simply seeing the poster for this film may instantly suggest something about defying the odds, standing up against adversity, and meeting with huge successes that are the result of hard work. Isn't that, after all, the general formula of many of the inspirational sports movies that are out there?
However, while "Gracie" emphasizes all those things and efficiently plays out those typical messages, there is something much stronger that makes this film worth your time. It is loosely based on true-life events of actress Elisabeth Shue, who made a name for herself with the 1980's hit "Misadventures in Babysitting." Beyond her acting career, though, there is a story of her childhood that is carried through the character of Gracie Bowens, a teenager who is growing up with a slew of soccer-playing brothers. You can sense immediately that she is struggling with feelings of inadequacy as she fights to be part of the family athleticism, but when a jarring tragedy strikes with her oldest brother, so begins her journey toward making a difference and taking his spot on the varsity soccer team. Gracie knows she cannot take this on without her father's consent in training her--a tall order that creates several barriers against her, even with her own parents. If there's anything that this movie strives for most, it's the sobering honesty of the families, schools, and communities that are not always supportive of what certain people deem as valuable.
Perhaps the single factor that drew me in the most about this film was the execution of Gracie's rebellion early in the plot. In an attempt to curb the pain of her family's loss and cope with Dad's rejection, the young girl compensates with alcohol, skimpy outfits, and flings with guys that go well beyond first base. The scenes were so thoughtfully done, and there was a certain authenticity with how a 15-year-old girl in that situation would be feeling and reacting. Though it's clear that her father's attentiveness would be the one thing to pull her away from his danger, the entire issue is proof of the theory that involvement in sports affords young people the discipline to stay out of trouble.
Beyond this, the theme of "Gracie" basically focuses on the price we pay for pursuing a far-fetched dream (and let's face it, it's not usually a cheap deal). Our heroine is a girl who obviously has the passion and grit to do well, but it is hardly a smooth road, and much of the film focuses less on the glory and more on how much this young lady must do every single day to have a shot at what she is doing. Even when she manages to earn the opportunity to try out for the guys' team, the male world of soccer is not exactly kind to the likes of a girl trying to ease her way in. Viewers will find themselves searching hard for a moment during which they can share in celebrating Gracie's success, but the truth is, the film's plot makes it as tough for us as they do for the main character. The ending is enough to generate a smile without feeling that the story went too far with the saccharine and unrealistic, and to me, that is the mark of a unique, credible movie.
If you did not get to catch this film when it was originally released in theaters, I hope you will get your family together to watch it when it arrives on DVD in September. Aside from a solid script that has something important to say for anyone who watches, it is filled with strong, hard-fought performances from the entire cast. Carly Schroeder has the ideal "athletic beauty" combination that film critics have been talking about regarding her performance, and though she is a relative newcomer (she had a recurring role in Hilary Duff's "Lizzie McGuire" TV series and theatrical film of the same name, but this is her first major role), she lends all the right elements to the character and indicates a promising future career in the Hollywood business. As Gracie, she is a bag of bolts, a fighting spirit, and while she thrives under her father's careful guidance, the real test comes when it is time to get out there and show everyone if she can do it. The way Schroeder executes it is brilliant, and there's no doubt that the casting crew got it just right when they chose her. Dermot Mulroney is terrific as always, delivering big as a grieving and conflicted father. His love for his little girl--his only daughter--is never questioned, but his hesitation in helping her realize her biggest goal involves far more intense factors, especially in a society where female prejudice is still a major issue. Elisabeth Shue--who is, again, the inspiration for the title character--steps in as Gracie's patient mother. Always hopeful, yet never afraid to come forward with the truth, it is an all-around enjoyable film that seeks to inspire in its own way.

Elton John has had too many hits over the last three decades for the 12 songs in this collection to seriously be considered his "greatest," but that's hair-splitting. This hourlong concert, performed by John, his band, and several guest singers before a packed house at New York's Madison Square Garden in October 2000, certainly does contain some of his (and lyricist Bernie Taupin's) best and most popular tunes, like "Candle in the Wind," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," and "Your Song." And while Elton is a rather unlikely pop star these days--chubby, middle-aged, far less flamboyant than in his '70s heyday--he can still put on a good show, and that's just what he and his band (including longtime cohorts Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums) do.
Some of his choices for guests are a bit puzzling: Bryan Adams adds little excitement to "Sad Songs (Say So Much)," while singer Ronan Keating of the British group Boyzone, a virtual unknown in the United States, is superfluous on "Your Song," perhaps Elton's most enduring tune (revived to considerably better effect on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack). On the other hand, Billy Joel is a good foil for Elton on "Yellow Brick Road," Mary J. Blige adds some soulful fervor to "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," Kiki Dee shows up to duet with Elton on "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" for the first time in several eons, and the young American singer Anastacia is a revelation on a hard-rocking "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." --Sam Graham

Zee Bomb !.......2007-09-12
Big production with all Elton's best songs minus 'Benny In The Jets'. Elton's voice is fine. The one song he may have had trouble with, 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' he smartly duets off the high parts to Billie Joel. My wife can't go to concerts anymore because of health issues but she sure loved this ! It's definitely the next best thing to being there. The added bonus is you get all of these talented singers coming out to break up any monotony that may have cropped up. I can't recommend this tape high enough for anyone who likes the songs of Elton John.
Elton John is Still.......2007-07-14
Next best thing to seeing Elton John perform in person is this One Night Only DVD. It's got all the great hits - 2 1/2 hours worth of classics. The nice thing about seeing Elton John in this DVD and even now if you catch a Red Piano show in Vegas is that he may look a little older, but he's still just as talented and entertaining as ever. His live performances are legendary and he's still one of the best musicians on the planet with the band to back it up!!
Great DVD.......2007-07-03
My eight yr old LOVES Rocket Man so I purchased this DVD for him to learn more about Elton John's music. He LOVED it! Of course, so did my husband and I. Very entertaining. Arrived fast and in great condition.
Best Concert DVD I Own.......2007-06-15
This is the best live concert DVD that I have ever viewed. Video quality is great and both the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks sound great. I've done some comparison between the DD and DTS tracks and I have to say the DD track has a little more punch but the DTS track is very detailed and clean. The best part of this DVD for me is the audience interaction. Everybody is on their feet for the entire concert and there are so many great guest stars. Billy Joel is great and Mary J Blige, wow! Get this DVD!!
Great Performance - LOUSY Video Clarity.......2007-03-29
If you've read far enough to get to this review, you're probably aware that this DVD contains a great selection of songs, performed well. As a musician, I have thoroughly enjoyed the caliber of musicianship demonstrated by both Elton and his very capable troupe of musicians. The composition of the shots is superb, as is the editing.
HOWEVER, I've watched this on a Hi-Def LCD and was very disappointed with the video quality. It looks like it was shot on VHS. It is quite distracting. If you are a videophile or only plan on watching this on a Hi-Def set, be prepared for very 1990's-looking video. If you can live with that, this is a great set.

For Adam Sandler fans only, this dopey comedy features the former Saturday Night Live star as an overindulged rich guy whose father insists he repeat grades 1 through 12 before taking over the family business. The scenario is perfect for Sandler's infantile leanings (which he has fortunately outgrown in more recent movies), and for the most part the jokes about being too old and too big for the experiment are obvious. Chris Farley and Steve Buscemi turn up in uncredited cameo appearances, but otherwise the film is pretty dismissible, except for those diehards who can't get enough of Sandler. --Tom Keogh

Adam's Best!.......2007-08-25
This is Sandler's best flick imo...
Some of his later stuff bores me, but this is classic!
SANDLER AND HIS FRIENDS ARE FUNNY IN THIS GOOFY COMEDY!.......2007-08-05
What can I say?.....I like this film. It is juvenile, but Sandler and friends are very funny in this goofy movie. Sandler plays a rich 30 something kid who will lose control of the family business and his inheritance if he doesn't go back to school and complete kindergarten through 12th grade in a short amount of time. The plot is pretty thin, but it rolls along with many familiar faces from SNL trading punches through out. The DVD transfer looks good.
Could have been better..........2007-02-05
This movie was not as funny as I had heard it was. I laughed out loud only once or twice during the whole movie. I think that Adam Sandler has been a lot funnier in other movies...this just wasn't his best.
GREAT MOVIE, EMBARASSING SPECIAL EDITION!!!!.......2007-01-22
This movie is very funny and great, but I personally think that this is an awfully embarassing special editon. The only featuers are a director's commentary, deleted scenes, outtakes, and production notes, which isn't too much! If you were one of the victims who believed this and got home to realize that is really wasn't, well, at least the movie is great. Another related problem is the Happy Gilmore dvd.
Funny and stupid, good for a laugh.......2007-01-04
My 4 year-old loved the battle between shampoo and conditioner.

Happy Gilmore
Adam Sandler fans are sure to enjoy this no-brainer comedy, but everyone else is strongly advised to proceed with caution. Before scoring a more enjoyable hit with his 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer, the former Saturday Night Live goofball played Happy Gilmore, a hot-tempered guy whose dreams of hockey stardom elude him. But when he discovers his gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards, he joins a pro tour to win the prize money needed to rescue his beloved grandma's home from IRS repossession. The trouble is, Happy's not so happy. He's got a temper that frequently flares on the golf course (he even dukes it out with celebrity golfer Bob Barker), but a retired golf pro (Carl Weathers) and a compassionate publicist (Julie Bowen) help him to perfect his putting game and adjust his confrontational attitude. How much you enjoy this lunacy depends on your tolerance for Sandler's loudmouthed schtick and a shocking number of blatant product-placement endorsements, but if you're looking for broad comedy you've come to the right teeoff spot. --Jeff Shannon

The Billy Madison/Happy Gilmore Collection .......2007-02-14
Absolutely love Adam Sandler! I have ever since his "Saturday Night Live" days. I think I now own allof his Happy Madison production movies and all of the movies he has played in.
Great Deal.......2007-01-10
This is a great deal if you are a Adam Sandler fan. Two very funny movies that can be watched over and over again. Great value!
That Veronica Vaughn is one hot piece of ace, I know from experience dude. If you know what I mean........2007-01-07
I am not sure what the hell you want me to say about these movies. There great, and in the same box. Damn you Adam Sandler, taking all my money. It just feels so damn good. You can't go wrong with this box set, nor each movie by themselves. SO GO WATCH THEM. NOW! Then when your done, you tell me your review...
Billy Idiot.......2007-01-03
Happy Gilmore is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Then I watched Billy Madison and it was about a totally moronic spoilt rich kid. Total opposites sometimes don't atract.
Sandler at his best!........2006-04-28
I'll write a short review, both these films were fantastic and it shows us why Adam Sandler was one of the best and funniest cast members from SNL, Sandler's dumb and juvinile humor is perfect for these films so just kick back and enjoy don't take these films too seriously. Billy, the heir to the Madison hotel millions has wasted his life with booze, partying and hanging out with his dumb and lazy friends since leaving school.
When he discovers his father's plan to turn his fortune over to his Vice president, Billy decides to go back to school and make up for lost time. Very funny scenes involving Billy interacting with the young kids who all seem to think that hes slightly retarded and one scene that I thought was priceless was when a car with a family who all seem to be bullies slips on a banana peal and falls of a cliff while there still chanting O'Doyle rules, I guess you have to be in a silly mood to enjoy this or a good sense of humor.
Happy Gilmore is an ice hockey player with a bad temper his confrontational attitude is what gets him kicked out from the team so Gilmore tries golf instead and gets trained by Chubbs (hilarious role by Carl Weathers) also check out the annoying Shooter McGavin who is Gilmore's rival and Kevin Nealon whos low key performance was hillarious I had tears in my eyes. You also get the fantastic fight scene with T.V. show host Bob Barker. Yes both movies are dumb but they are slapstick goofball comedies and you are gaurnteed to enjoy them, I definetly recomend these films for a good laugh.

Chris Farley and Steve Buscemi turn up in uncredited cameo appearances, but otherwise the film is pretty dismissible, except for those diehards who can't get enough of Sandler. --Tom Keogh

Classic Sandler.......2007-08-23
While we wouldn't want out children to grow up thinking billy madison is a role model, we still laugh at him because he's funny. Chris Farley is funny as always, and Veronica Vaughn really is so hot and billy...you are right, we all want to stay in her class forever.

DaViD Pasadena Australia........2005-09-20
I agree with the other reviewers, my only complaint is with the quality of the dvd. It is overly dark in some scenes, and the sound at times is hard to hear. Over all it is worth purchasing when you consider the price. The film contains stock footage from several Paramount movies including the Gary Cooper version entitled Fighting Caravans.
Wagon Train, Indians, Randolf Scott.......2001-01-02
Great wagon train epic. Randolph Scott gets great support from many fine actors including sidekicks Raymond Hatton and Olin Howland. Fantastic theme song that will stick in your mind for days. A woman hating scout (Scott) and his two sidekicks lead a wagon train of easterners into Indian country. Major action scenes, pictures of the majestic wagons, romance, and Monte Blue as a half-breed villain you'll not soon forget. This is one you'll watch again and again.
Wagon Wheels - A Great Western from 1934.......1999-12-29
A well made film from 1934, this movie has everything a good western should have: a good guy wearing the white hat and a bad guy wearing the black, chivalry, campfire songs, humor, and a great cowboys v. indians shootout. This movie was ahead of it's time in 1934, and a pioneer to great westerns and action films that followed. This is a classic that was influential and should not be forgotten.

Customer Reviews:
My 3 Favorite Adam Sandler movies.......2004-11-22
I have always been a big fan of Sandler and this wont change my mind. These are my 3 favorite Adam Sandler movies I like out of about the 7or 8 I enjoy.I am mostely into comedies.
OK Collection But Wouldn't Recommed...Sandler vs. Murphy?.......2002-01-21
Despite the ideas and opinions of others, ideas of an individual whom seems to have a bit of a crush on Eddie Murphy..ok.. want to make a CONFESSION?...Homo-Erotic OBSESSION? DEPRESSION? REPRESSION? Or just CONSTIPATION? I must admit, I believe Adam Sandler has never been as talented as Eddie Murphy at picking up gay transexual prostitutes and "giving them RIDES home." First off,to be honest I DON'T LIKE THIS Adam Sandler COLLECTION. Billy Madison is a great comedy, while Happy Gilmore is a CLASSIC performance by a CLASSIC comedian. Bulletproof...how could Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans make such a bad movie?...almost as bad as Damon's brothers' Scary Movie 2...not that bad though. Happy Gilmore should have been offered in Widescreen and that is the main reason I didn't buy this collection. To go back to the Eddie Murphy/ Adam Sandler comparison again though. First off, both have released multiple albums, Adam Sandler's first two being far superior in comedic quality and talent as opposed to any album ever recorded by Eddie Murphy. Yet, neither of these two should torture us with their singing "abilities." I'd rather hear Shaq rap...and that's real torture. I admit...I'm not a big fan of Adam Sandler's stand up comedy either. But then again, Eddie Murphy attempted to be a stand up as well, attempting to be another Lenny Bruce or Richard Pryor, yet SEEMED to INSULT HOMOSEXUALS quite often...the same people who were his "Friends" that he gave "RIDES" home to. Hell, in the stand up area Bob Saget would even make decent competition for both Sandler and Murphy. That's how bad they both are at it..although Eddie is "RAW"(note, don't waste your money on that garbage.) As for the absurdity that Murphy's movies have reached as compared to Sandler's movies....I have yet to see Adam Sandler want a clip in his movie where a Gerbil gives anal sex to a male human being..as what happened in Nutty Professor 2. Is that supposed to be funny? Yeah, nuthin like a rape scene to bust me out into laughter(note the sarcasm). What the hell was THAT? Did Eddie give the Gerbil a ride home after shooting this film also?.... In addition, Sandler has never made a sequel, as Eddie has...now one could say that sequels are the signs of success..Does this mean that Children of the Corn 4 was so huge that a part 5 was made? He can't come up with any original ideas. Beverly Hills Cop definitely was befitting of a sequel..but Beverly Hills Cop 3? Did anyone actually watch this stinkfest and enjoy it? Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps. Whoopeeee..let's hear retarded farting noises the ENTIRE movie by the supposedly creative multiple roles Murphy played.. and watch a man raped by a gerbil....and and elderly woman act like a 2 dollar whore...exciting!(sarcasm appears again). Thank God there was no sequel to such pieces of crap he made such as Vampire in Brooklyn, Distinguished Gentleman,Holy Man, Metro, LIFE...The saddest thing of all is that Shrek is actually the best movie Murphy has made in a while and that is the one where he played the role of an ass. Eddie Murphy has released more material than Adam Sandler, but a greater quantity doesn't mean better quality. Every Eddie Murphy movie is like playing Russian roulette with half the chambers loaded. The only difference is that part of your life is just wasted by viewing film not using a true bullet. I think I'll stick to quality and Adam Sandler, Bill Murray, Sam Kinison, Richard Pryor, Chris Farley,John Belushi,Dave Chappelle,Lenny Bruce,Michael Keaton and that guy from whom he stole his last name from..what was his name again? As for Eddie Murphy, I know I just trashed him, but I have enjoyed some of his material. Before someone calls Murphy a genius and insults Sandler's comedic work, they might just want to think about which comedian has had more original ideas that have made people laugh their asses off. Remember it's all about quality, not quantity, so Sandler doesn't have to make a Happy Gilmore 2 or 3 to try and keep his name alive. He creates quality using a twisted sense of comedy. Yet, the greatest all around comedian/actor(Movies/Stand-up/Any environment he is in)since Richard Pryor is Jim Carrey.
The Funniest Adam Sandler Movies.......2001-09-20
You'll Want These Movies. Billy Madison will make you laugh with the language, humor, and jokes played by Sandler In School. Happy Gilmore will laugh the he'l outta you especially the part where Sandler and Bob Barker start beating the [heck] outta each other. And Bulletproof you will want: The Best Movie With Adam Sandler. Sandler and Damon Wayans star as a crook and a cop on the run from a drug lord trying to kill them you'll like this because of the humor, violence, and language. These Are Funny Movies.
Since when is this guy famous enough to rate a 'collection?'.......2001-06-06
Excuse me, who or what is Adam Sandler supposed to be? An actor? A comedian? An actor-comedian? No, no, no...Eddie Murphy is an actor, a comedian; an actor-comedian. To watch Eddie's stand up, his stint on Saturday Night Live...then his movies...even the BAD ONES...then compare and contrast with what passes for Adam Sandler's standup, stint on SNL and his movies...what gives? I'm sorry even if you didn't compare...Adam Sandler is devoid of comedic skills, and couldn't act his way out of a paper bag with the president of the paper bag manufacturing council talking him through the hard parts. This 'collection' is only, sadly, indicative of the decline of western society's standards...Chaplin, WC Fields, Buster Keaton, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Benny Hill, Chevy Chase...it's been a downward spiral ever since...leading to Adam Sandler as the lead ... going down the... Admittedly, America's tastes have changed and no doubt the youth contingent are leading the way in demanding Adam's special brand of what I loosely term 'humor'...but this only shows they'll watch anything...
