Once you've seen Drumline, halftime shows will become works of art. This formulaic yet surprisingly captivating movie honors the military precision of college football marching bands, those battalions of eager, sternly disciplined brass sections, drummers, and fly girls who turn halftime shows into well-oiled Vegas variety acts on steroids. Devon (played by Will Smith protégé Nick Cannon) is a cocky Brooklyn kid with a snare-drumming scholarship to (fictional) Atlanta A&T University. He can't read music (he lied on his application) and his attitude sucks, but he's the best natural drummer the college has ever had, so he quickly rises through the marching band ranks. The school year brings Devon the obligatory girlfriend (Zoë Saldana, smart and charming); clashes with his old-school band director (Orlando Jones); and well-earned redemption at the championship marching band showdown. No surprises here, but great chemistry all around, and a fantastic, positive role-model showcase for a musical form that has evolved far beyond the main street parades of Smalltown, U.S.A. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Halftime is party time in this high-energy comedy about a gifted street drummer (Nick Cannon) who snares the top spot in a university marching band - but quickly discovers it takes more than talent to succeed. Featuring a hip-hop soundtrack and dazzling dance moves, Drumline "shakes, rattles and rolls the house!" (Washington Post)

4 out of 5 stars Great Percussion.......2007-08-28

I guess I'm a little biased when it comes to drums. But this really made the hairs on my arms stand! Great Show!!

5 out of 5 stars Drumline.......2007-07-17

I've been a high school band director for over 22 years. It doesn't matter whether your group is a show band, corp style, big ten, etc., the concepts of teamwork and discipline involved in a band is shown in this movie. So many things ring true, especially the "one band, one sound" section. If you're in a marching band or ever have been, you'll enjoy this! The Morehouse director also reminds me of my good friend and colleague, Dr. Benjamin Ivory Kirk (now deceased), former assistant director at Tennessee State University. I think of him every time I watch it!

1 out of 5 stars A most forgettable movie ever!.......2007-06-17

My cousin took me to see this movie in theaters on xmas day of 2002 no where was open but the theaters. The previews looked funny but this movie wasn't even funny it was so stupid and boring. All it's about is a college stadium full of prep students drum battling against other drummers like it's a war field and the main actor nick cannon was a whiny cocky boastful guy who yes shows he's extremely talented than the ohter drummers and yet he's unable to read notes. If they have talent in drums why not join a band and make some friggen music instead of wasting their time and effort in a field battling other drummers to see who's best? and the ending was not surprisingly good it was even more pointless. Well this movie was so stupid and it would constantly come on tv because it sucked and nobody likes to see this movie anymore.

1 out of 5 stars This movie left me speechless.......2007-04-28

Have you ever wondered why there has never been a movie made about a championship high school chess team? Because no one would watch it and no one would care. I find Drumline amazing for many reasons. The first reason is that this is a feature film with a subject I could not care less about. Not only that, but when the movie was over I was even LESS interested in marching bands.

Another thing I find amazing is the star of the movie Nick Cannon. How does this talented actor keep the same stupid look on his face throughout the entire movie? That is the pure skill and talent of a seasoned thesbian. I think he must be an amazing actor to portray someone who cannot act. Absolutly incredible.

The grand finale of the flick has the buildup of a Rocky movie. Drumoff competitions? To each his own. I walked away from this movie with nothing. Sorry, it did nothing for me.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-04-22

The storyline and acting in this movie are painful, to say the least. The main character, Devon, is too annoying for words.
The band directors of the dueling universities that make up this story are ridiculously melodramatic, and there is no plot line what-so-ever.
I know we can expect these types of movies to stretch reality, but to show the main character begin school at one
University, drop out and transfer to another University, and then return to the first university...all in one semester was absurd.
Have the writers of this movie ever attended a University? Did they do any sort of research for this at all?
I would not recommend purchasing or renting this movie. It is not worth the money. If you feel you must see this monstrosity,
I would borrow it from a friend who was unfortunate enough to buy it, pull up the main menu, and go straight to the scenes with the band performances.
The whole movie is garbage and a waste of time.

Product Description

See the HBCU marching bands in a way you've never seen before. THE MAKING OF THE DVD Letters and e-mails started coming in as soon as the first Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB) ended. Five years later, the fans are still writing in, asking the same question . . . "Can we get a DVD of this unique event?" THE EVENT The road to "Stompin' at the Dome" begins in the fall and leads up to the event in January at the Georgia Dome. Throughout these months, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) commissioners, presidents, band directors and fans judge 41 participating bands on showmanship, musicianship and fan interaction at the "Celebration Tour," during football season. A SPECIAL GUEST The DVD is hosted by an eloquent voice who speaks on behalf of the Honda Battle of the Bands event - Ambassador Andrew Young. Ambassador Young is an American civil rights activist, former mayor of Atlanta and the United States' first African American ambassador to the United Nations. THE PRODUCTION Honda commissioned a top-notch DVD production crew - led by veteran concert documentary Director and Producer Michael Drumm - to capture the excitement and performances in a quality format. What started out as a project, became much more, when the magic of the Honda Battle of the Bands took on a life of its own. Beneath the surface of this event is a heartwarming story of HBCU leadership, teamwork and pride. THE BENEFICIARIES As founding sponsor, Honda awarded $141,000 in grants to the 41 participating HBCU bands. Additionally, each music department representing the ten featured bands showcased within "Stompin' at the Dome" will benefit from net proceeds of every DVD sold. Everyone from toddlers to grandparents, alumni to current students make up the 65,000 HBOB fans in the stands. Now, through your enjoyment of "Stompin' at the Dome," you too can become part of the Honda Battle of the Bands extended family.

1 out of 5 stars Very, very dull.............2007-07-03

I bought this movie for my son who is a Drumline fanatic and basically taught himself to play drums after watching the movie tens of thousands of times. I thought getting the Honda Battle for him would give him an insight to the "real" battle of the bands that go on - not a 'movie' with actors, etc. Boy was I let down! I thought the Honda Battle dragged on and on (even though the DVD was much shorter than I thought it should be) and there was no real "umph" to it. It was a lot of drug-out boring brass & half-hearted moves. I thought we would see the real stuff that made you want to get up outta your seat! Anyway, my son said he liked it anyway, but I'm still a true Drumline fan.

1 out of 5 stars Where did the music go?.......2007-06-28

I bought this DVD from the originator web site and I am very dissapointed in this product. My nephew loves marching bands but there are only 12 performances at or around 4 minutes a piece. Not what I expected for an event that sells out the Georgia Dome. If I can save someone else the dissapointment, I'm satisfied. But if you desire to hear people from behind the scenes talk about how they feel and what they think about bands by all means pick this up.
