In its second season, "The Odd Couple was filmed before a live studio audience," and a good sitcom was well on its way to becoming a great one. Jack Klugman, as sloppy Oscar, and Tony Randall as fussy Felix, two divorced men trying to live together without driving each other crazy, was casting alchemy, and as time goes by, we appreciate the fundamental things that still apply: smart, character-based writing and indelible performances. While there are no episodes that can be said to be truly classic, several are fan favorites, including "Sleepwalker," which was included as one of the bonus episodes on the first-season set, "Felix the Calypso Singer," in which Felix becomes the third wheel on Oscar's romantic getaway with his girlfriend, and "You Saved My Life," in which Felix almost kills Oscar with kindness after Oscar rescues him. This season fleshes out the mismatched friends' backstory with two fun flashback episodes. In "Speak for Yourself," Oscar is forced to step in when Felix develops laryngitis on the night he was to propose to his future ex-wife Gloria, and in "A Night to Dismember," a season benchmark, Oscar, Felix, and Oscar's ex-wife, Blanche, have different memories of the fateful night on which Oscar and Blanche split up.

Gone this season are the daffy Pigeon sisters. Introduced are Janis Hansen as Gloria, Joan Hotchkis as Oscar's girlfriend, Dr. Nancy Cunningham, and Brett Somers, a perfect match, as the dread Blanche. A pre-Laverne and Shirley Penny Marshall makes her first appearance as Oscar's secretary, Myrna, and in the episode, "Security Arms," that's John Fiedler, who portrayed Vinnie in the original 1968 Odd Couple movie (he is also the instantly recognizable voice of Piglet in the Disney Winnie the Pooh shorts). In later seasons, The Odd Couple overindulged on stunt casting (remember the Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs episode?) This second season offers comedian David Steinberg ("The Odd Couple Meets Their Host") and opera singer Richard Fredricks ("Does Your Mother Know You're Out, Rigoletto?"). The Odd Couple was a series that got better with each season. This live incarnation of the show is the one that is most fondly remembered, making the second season one that, unlike Felix, will never wear out its welcome. --Donald Liebenson

Two divorced New Yorkers---a slob and a fussbudget---try to live together `without driving each other crazy' in this classic sitcom based on Neil Simon's hit play and movie. Both Jack Klugman and Tony Randall won Emmys in the leads, the latter in the final year of a five-season run. `Now if I only had a job,' Randall said at the Emmy gala. The show inspired two remakes, one an animated series portraying the main characters as a cat and a dog, and a 1982-83 version with a mostly black cast.

5 out of 5 stars BRAVO PARAMOUNT!!! FELIX AND OSCAR ROCK!!! BRING ON SEASON 3!!!.......2007-09-12

First of all I have to say thank you Paramount for not taking too long to realize that The Odd Couple was worthy of being released on dvd from their original studio, and you did not take forever to release Season 2!!!

Needless to say these episodes were like candy and I ate up every last one in less than a week!!! My all-time favorites were Fat Farm, A night to dismember ( a very funny guest appearance by Joan Van Ark), The Greyhound Golden Earrings, and Security Arms. The chemistry was pure magic the way Oscar would play off of the insanity of Felix. Oh, and how could I forget to mention the episode Hospital Mates.

I loved this show so much that I would even sit through the opening before every episode, because it cracks me up the way the narrator would talk and see Felix's face as he's being thrown out the door, only to turn back and have his wife's hand sticking out to give him a frying pan! REQUESTING THAT HE NEVER RETURN!!! Well, I hope us diehard fans won't have to wait in vain for Season 3!!!

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT!! NO EDITS!!.......2007-09-06

Based on the reviews I'm reading, I've come to two conclusions:
1 - This is an excellent collection of Odd Couple episodes, in their original, un-edited form, that any fan should own!
2 - The only mistake made was putting a mis-leading disclaimer (edits & music changes) on the box. I hope it doesn't discourage sales. This needs to be fixed by Paramount....
It's all intact -- BUY THE SET!

5 out of 5 stars No Music Edits? Thank God!.......2007-09-02

I am not of the opinion that editing the music out of this series is a nitpicky concern, it would be the bull without the horns, so I am thrilled that these classic episodes remain untouched. If we all put our heads on our desks for a few moments, we'll realize that it's really outrageous for us to have expected anything else, isn't it? The way they have us trained!
This is a brilliant series, I really recommend it to people as a sort of yardstick, because if you watch these shows, and you don't "get it," with all due respect, there's something wrong with you!! DO SOMETHING, AND DO IT NOW!

Ah, it's getting late, and I must go, see, my curtain goes up on time, not like those clowns over at Lincoln Center!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-09-02

I just finished watching the second season and was incredibly pleased. The quality is amazing! I watched it on my 50" Plasma and couldn't believe the details I had missed back in the 70's. Felix and Oscar look a bit more wrinkled, but it adds to their character!

Do not hesitate to buy this second season - it's worth every dime!

I only worry that they'll do what so many others are doing, which is to stop offering new seasons such as, Leave it to Beaver, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart, etc. I was so looking forward to owning all seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Tony and Jack Found their Groove in Season 2.......2007-09-01

The First season has a few gems but it was in Season 2 that The Odd Couple really took off. These episodes are absolute classics and I'm loving every minute of it. The fat farm scene has had me in stitches since the 70's. "Are you gonna eat your desert". There are so many memorable lines in these episodes. Couldn't be happier that this is finally available on DVD.

Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously black) sheriff of Rock Ridge. Sheriff Bart teams up with deputy Jim (Gene Wilder) to foil the railroad-building scheme of the nefarious Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman). The simple plot is just an excuse for a steady stream of gags, many of them unabashedly tasteless, that Brooks and his wacky cast pull off with side-splitting success. The humor is so juvenile and crude that you just have to surrender to it; highlights abound, from the lunkheaded Alex Karras as the ox-riding Mongo to Madeline Kahn's uproarious send-up of Marlene Dietrich as saloon songstress Lili Von Shtupp. Adding to the comedic excess is the infamous campfire scene involving a bunch of hungry cowboys, heaping servings of baked beans and, well, you get the idea. --Jeff Shannon

Description

The railroad's got to run through the town of Rock Ridge. How do you drive out the townfolk in order to steal their land? Send in the toughest gang you've got...and name a new sheriff who'll last about 24 hours. But that's not really the plot of Blazing Saddles, just the pretext. Once Mel Brooks' lunatic film many call his best gets started, logic is lost in a blizzard of gags, jokes, quips, puns, howlers, growlers and outrageous assaults upon good taste or any taste at all. Cleavon Little as the new lawman, Gene Wilder as the wacko Waco Kid, Brooks himself as a dim-witted politico and Madeline Kahn in her Marlene Dietrich send-up that earned an Academy Award nomination all give this sagebrush saga their lunatic best. And when Blazing Saddles can't contain itself at the finale, it just proves the Old West will never be the same!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still Funny after all these years.......2007-09-04

I think I've become Cleavon Little's number one fan. He and Gene Wilder are as funny as ever in this classic... good humor never stops making you laugh and it is especially true in this case.

5 out of 5 stars Blazing Saddles.......2007-08-27

A must have for any movie buff. This is truly one of the classics!

5 out of 5 stars They don't make movies like this anymore!.......2007-08-24

This movie is a comedy classic! I love how Mel Brooks makes an hysterical mockery of the Wild West. His role as an equally corrupt and incompetent governor, under the sway of Harvey Korman's Attorney General is hilarious. Also, the whole business with Rock Ridge is a side splitter, with Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, posing as social outcasts, end up winning over the hostile locals and shutting down the corrupt designs of Korman's character (Headly "Heddy" Lamar). Many other great scenes are found throughout the movie. A must for all fans of "intelligent comedy." Unfortunately, this movie is so non-PC that it will most likely never be re-released in theaters.

1 out of 5 stars I don't find this movie funny at all........2007-08-18

I don't find this movie funny at all. It's so boring thatI did not finish the DVD. I regret buying it even though it cost me only 10 dollars.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies ever made.......2007-07-07

I dont know why but I cant get enough of this movie. The humour is really funny and there are so many scenes I enjoy, but none I can type down. If you enjoy comedy, then this movie is for you.

Jack Klugman and Tony Randall give an advanced course in chemistry in the auspicious first season of The Odd Couple, which would only get better as the veteran character actors made themselves at home in their signature roles and the series switched from a laugh track to a live audience. In these first episodes, The Odd Couple hews pretty much to the voice and spirit of Neil Simon's play about mismatched roommates, sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison and "miserable, picky, irritating" photographer Felix Unger ("That was the point," defends series executive producer and writer Garry Marshall, who provides lively audio introductions for each episode and commentary for the pilot). Playing pivotal roles this first season are Felix and Oscar's poker playing buddies, Murray the cop (Al Molinaro), Vinnie, Roy, and Speed, the fabulous Pigeon sisters (Monica Evans and Carole Shelley reprising their Broadway and film roles), and, of course, Neil Hefti's jaunty, jazzy theme, which was introduced in the 1968 film. As with M*A*S*H, the series would establish its own identity and supplant previous incarnations in the public's consciousness. The Odd Couple was never a ratings smash before it became a syndication staple.

The series' loyal following is amply rewarded with this five-disc set. In addition to all 24 first season episodes, a bonus disc contains four billed as "Tony and Jack's Favorite Episodes," including the one where Oscar attacks Felix in his sleep, and the duo are paired as contestants on the game show Password. In a clip from The Mike Douglas Show, Tony Randall promotes the series, and somehow ends up challenging Douglas and Pat Boone to a push-up contest (Boone wins!). A reunited Randall and Klugman, his voice a rasp following his throat cancer surgery, are seen in a priceless clip from a 1993 performance of The Odd Couple to benefit Randall's National Actor's Theatre. A gag reel is negligible, but Klugman contributes home videos of a book tour and he provides commentary for a clip of him winning his first Emmy Award ("I've never seen this," he says delightedly). The Odd Couple is the very model of a classic character-driven comedy. From its dream-team casting to the literate, witty writing, there is nothing odd about why this series' remains one of the most beloved in all TV Land. --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars Brilliance marred by technical problem.......2007-09-14

The content is solid 5-star material, and other reviewers have already covered well the brilliance of the acting and writing that made The Odd Couple one of the best sitcoms ever produced. However, while the video transfer is excellent, the audio is unsynchronized to the video to varying degrees. Sometimes the voices are so out of synch with the lips that it is very distracting. Perhaps this flaw is not present in all copies of the DVDs, but let the buyer beware.

I grew up watching the Odd-Couple and watching these as a 40+ year old adult I still finf this series hilarious! And I even find some adult humor I missed as a kid in the show! If you are a fan this DVD collection is a MUST own. Can't wait to get them all!

Neil Simon's terribly funny play about roommates Oscar the slob and Felix the neurotic was first committed to film in this 1968 production, directed by Gene Saks (Barefoot in the Park). Perfectly timed, ingeniously rendered, not a hair out of place in the history-making performances of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon (or the great support cast), The Odd Couple is a movie that one just has to see every two or three years to stay happy. The poker-game sequence in which Oscar's cronies seem to be falling under the sway of fussy Felix's talent for making sandwiches is priceless. --Tom Keogh

Description

Neil Simon's beloved story about two divorced men who decide to share a New York apartment. Felix is fussy and fastidious to a fault. He proves that cleanliness is next to insanity. Oscar wreaks havoc on a tidy room with the speed and thoroughness of a tornado. An enduring and endearing picture with the intelligence one usually misses in comedies.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This movie is a classic.......2007-09-11

Every word in this flick is a punchline.Neil Simon did a great job.I miss Jack and Walter.May they rest in peace. s. suggs

5 out of 5 stars Matthau and Lemmon.......2007-09-01

Move over Martin & Lewis, there's a new team in town and they are packing with comedy and chemistry. Not sense Martin & Lewis has a pair been so magical on screen as Matthau & Lemmon. Although each can hold their own when it comes to acting, putting the two together in a movie was definitely a winning move. Their acting ability and skills are unlimited. From the Odd Couple to the Grumpy/Grumpier Old Men classics, their performances never fails to amuse and entertain.

2 out of 5 stars not all that funny.......2007-07-23

Basically contrived and a waste of time. Although am a huge fan of both Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau...this poorly written flick doesn't cut it. Not the actors' fault, either. Blame it on Neil Simon--who was never very good to begin with.

To all the aspiring writers out there: if you want to know HOW NOT TO write a comedy all you have to do is watch anything written by Neil Simon. Why? Why does every third line have to be a "punch line?" Not only that, you can sense this guy (Simon) straining to be funny and clever...and he rarely is.

Most films written by this guy are really hard to take. Just my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this any more........2007-07-18

The Odd Couple (Gene Saks, 1968)

When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of the TV spinoff series of this movie. And yet, somehow, I never saw the original flick. It popped up a couple of nights ago on Turner Classic Movies, so I flopped down on the couch and gave it a go. My daughter wasn't so sure about it, and I'm not convinced my wife was, either, but I got a kick out of it.

Lemmon and Matthau, one of the great post-WW2 comedy teams, play neatnik hypochondriac Felix Ungar and sportswriting slob Oscar Madison, respectively. Ungar's wife has thrown him out; Madison has been divorced for years, and his wife lives on the west coast. Ungar, after his attempt at suicide goes wrong, comes to Madison for a place to stay for a few days. Madison sees all the reasons Ungar's wife threw him out (the obsessive cooking and cleaning) as perfect ways to complement Madison's, shall we say, less than pristine lifestyle, and invites him to stay there permanently. Fast-forward to three weeks later, and both of them are well aware why the other is divorced...

This is funny stuff. Yes, a lot of it plays these days as cliched, but remember that this is where the cliches got their start. This was 1968. Women's Lib was still coals simmering that hadn't erupted yet. Divorces were still few and far between. The idea of the sensitive man was still decades away from being popular. Felix and Oscar (and, for that matter, Cecily and Gwendolyn) aren't cliches as much as they are archetypes, folks. Look at it that way-- which is becoming increasingly easier to do as the country swings farther and farther back to the religious right-- and you see why this was one of the biggest hits of 1968. ****

5 out of 5 stars The Humor is Dated, But the Movie is Great.......2007-05-31

The late, great Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau were one of the greatest comedy duos in the history of movies. This was (as far as I know) their first pairing, but they would reunite all through their careers and even died within months of each other. "The Odd Couple" introduces that same humor that we'd see in the "Grumpy Old Men" films and their other collaborations; The humor here is kind of dated, but it has its moments of fun and is, of course, incredibly charming. Jack Lemmon plays Felix Unger, a man whose wife has just filed for divorce. When we meet Felix, he's on the verge of committing suicide. Walter Matthau plays Oscar Madison, a divorced bachelor who spends his days gambling and getting calls from his ex-wife about how his alimony payments are late. With Felix's troubles, Oscar decides to let Felix stay with him.
The problem is, Oscar is a laid-back slob while Felix is a neurotic, neat freak...It doesn't take long before the two start to get on each other's nerves. The turning point comes when Oscar sets up a date for the two of them with two English sisters Cicily and Gwendolyn Pigeon and Felix breaks down, destroying the rest of the night. The film is written by Neil Simon, based on his play and this is a film that can truly be called perfect. As I said, the humor is dated and it's not as hilarious as it probably once was but there's not a single scene in the film that doesn't need to be in the film and there are no jokes that fall flat. They either work or they don't. Lemmon and Matthau are at the top of their game here and this is the best collaboration I've seen of theirs (although, the only other ones I have seen are the two "Grumpy Old Men" films). "The Odd Couple" is a human comedy that's realistic and funny with some great moments and a terrific, paradoxical ending. I highly recommend it.

Product Description

Jackie Chan (RUSH HOUR 2) and Owen Wilson (THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) jump back in the saddle for SHANGHAI KNIGHTS, the hilarious sequel to the hit action-comedy SHANGHAI NOON. When Chon Wang (Chan) gets news of his estranged father's murder in Shanghai, he leaves his honorable life as Carson City's sheriff in a cloud of dust and reunites with his yarn-spinning sidekick, Roy O'Bannon (Wilson). Together they make their way to London on a daring quest for honor and revenge. Hilarious escapades and hair-raising adventures ensue as our heroes find themselves in the middle of a devious plot to eliminate the entire royal family. And Chon gives Victorian Britain a royal kick in the pants as he tries to avenge his father's death and keep love-struck Roy away from his sister!

Better than your average sequel, Shanghai Knights almost defies the law of diminishing returns. Lacking the freshness of Shanghai Noon, it compensates with a looser, disposable plot that plays to the strengths of costars Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. It's 1887, and odd-couple heroes Chon Wang (Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Wilson) are in London to retrieve the Imperial Seal of China, stolen by an English lord (Aidan Gillen) who killed Wang's father in his quest for the British throne. Wang's lithe and lovely sister (Fann Wong) joins the battle with high-kicking force, appealing to Roy's roguish charm and surfer-dude anachronisms. While Chan continues his transition to safer stunts and good-natured homage to Buster Keaton, Gene Kelly, and other Hollywood legends, Wilson indulges the party vibe to good effect, maintaining the anything-goes approach that allows silly encounters with Jack the Ripper, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and a Dickensian urchin named Charlie Chaplin. (Chaplin wasn't born until 1889, but if the filmmakers didn't care, why should you?) --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of Jackie's best.......2007-08-23

Very underated Jackie movie. It is funny and has great action. (Nothing much else to say, I just wanted to put in my 5 stars worth.)

3 out of 5 stars So-so movie.......2007-08-18

It was ok...not NEAR as funny as the first movie.....Shanghai Noon. That's all I have to say!

5 out of 5 stars Rush hour meet the western.......2007-02-11

The heroic storey Chon Wang continues in Shanghai Knights the hilarious sequel to the successful Shanghai Noon. In this storey it has been a couple of years since Jackie Chain and Owen Wilson last rip roaring adventure. As the story starts of Jackie father who has protected the emperor's seal for over ten generations is brutal murder in Shanghai. Getting word from his sister Lin Jackie goes to New York to reunite with his old sidekick Roy "O' Bannon, played by Owen Wilson. Together with the aid of his sister line they must track down there killer. Which pulls them into a despicable plane set by the evil son of the former emperor and a selfish English prince to take the position of the royal throne on as the emperor of china and the other as the king of London will there dastardly plan to wipe out the rest of the royal family go through find out in the action packed conclusion. A word of warming due to several scenes in this movie with heavy Konfu action sequences and several brief scenes with heavy sexual content I do not recommend this two any one under thirteen. If you are 13 to16 years of age or older this movie should be fine for you.

2 out of 5 stars Another uninspired sequel.......2006-11-10

Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Luke Wilson) reunite to recover the Imperial Seal of China and avenge the death of Chon's father, the Keeper of the Seal. They are joined by Chon's sister, the beautiful and equally dangerous Lin (Fann Wong). The chemistry of Wilson and Chan is as delightful as ever, but that (and the beautiful and talented Wong) is about the only reason to watch this tired comedy. Even the action scenes are uninspired. A disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Shanghai Knights.......2006-03-16

Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson have done a fine and funny job on this film. A must own!!

Gary Farmer (Smoke Signals) is the standout in a fine film by Jonathan Wacks about an oversized Cheyenne man-child (Farmer) who decides to go on a spiritual quest, while simultaneously giving a ride to his lifelong Indian activist friend (A. Martinez). The film takes us through some pretty desolate Indian communities, but while Wacks makes a point of revealing harsher aspects of life on some reservations, the emphasis is on Farmer's delightful performance. A bonus: among the cast are Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves) and Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans), neither of whom were well-known in 1989, the year this film was released. --Tom Keogh

Description

For the Northern Cheyenne tribe of Lame Deer, Montana, the American Dream has taken a grim detour. Here, Buddy Red Bow (A Martinez) is a committed activist battling a suspicious land-grab. Philbert Bono (Gary Farmer, in a performance Roger Ebert calls "one of the most wholly convincing I've seen") is a serene spiritual warrior guided by sacred visions. But when Buddy's estranged sister is framed and jailed in New Mexico, the two men take Philbert's rust-wrecked '64 Buick `war pony' on a road trip that makes some very unexpected stops along the way. Jonathan Wacks (Producer of REPO MAN) directs and Graham Greene (DANCES WITH WOLVES), Wes Studi (THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, HEAT) and Amanda Wyss star in this acclaimed comedy/drama about Native Americans understanding the past, fighting for their future and discovering a few surprising truths along the POWWOW HIGHWAY.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-09-10

Buddy must make a trip from Montana to Santa Fe when his sister is framed to keep Buddy's mouth shut about not allowing some business-men to exploit the reservation's resources. He travels with a school-mate he once bullied who has his head in the past (calling his beat up old car his 'pony'). Buddy gets forced to look at their past while trying to deal with modern problems. I would've liked a longer ending that tied up a couple loose ends, but I enjoyed the film overall.

4 out of 5 stars A Welcome Native American Perspective.......2007-05-16

This film accurately depicts life in Indian Country; the pervasive poverty, racism and lack of opportunity. Despite this bleak reality, there is great humor, culture and spirituality. Gary Farmer embodies the pathos, humor and dignity of this tremendous resilience while remaining completely grounded. He was also in a similar Indian road-trip adventure; "Smoke Signals" based on stories from Sherman Alexie's book: "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist-fight in Heaven".

There aren't nearly enough Native American made films but this one is a welcome and much needed addition to the genre. The best film reflecting contemporary Native American life is Chris Eyre's "Skins" starring the excellent Eric Schweig and Graham Greene.

5 out of 5 stars Pow-WOW!.......2007-04-08

Powwow Highway is a touching, realistic, slightly lighter look at the way Native Americans have lived and been treated for quite some time. Though it doesn't concentrate solely on their lives, what you do see, does touch you.

The film is about two best friends, Philbert, played by Gary Farmer, who is absolutely charming and wonderful in this role, and Red Bow, played by A Martinez, who is also great in his role. All the performances are wonderful, especially Gary Farmer's touching performance, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.

Although the ending is a little unbelieveable, it is still a great movie and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Pow Wow Highway - A Must See for A Martinez fans.......2007-03-24

Loved Pow Wow Highway from the first time to the hundredth! A great A Martinez film. Lots of plot and a lot of fun. Got one for my son, too.

This 1979 comedy is absolutely indispensable for fans of Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, or Andrew Bergman, who wrote the film's screenplay and went on to direct The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas. (Let's forgive him for Striptease.) Arkin is extraordinarily funny as a dentist who quickly grows skeptical about the wild claims of his daughter's future father-in-law (Peter Falk) that he is a CIA agent. When he is drawn into a bizarre adventure in a banana republic, however, he takes a different view. Arthur Hiller (Love Story) provides serviceable direction, but the real draw here is the perfect chemistry between the two leads and Bergman's weirdly comic mind. Watch for the look on Arkin's face when Falk's character tells a story about giant tse-tse flies. --Tom Keogh

Description

Comedy about a dentist who gets mired in the bizarre intrigues of his daughter's soon-to-be father-in-law, who claims to be a CIA agent.

5 out of 5 stars The In-Laws.......2007-07-05

Arthur Hiller's hilarious spoof (written by the talented Andrew Bergman) is propelled by an ever-escalating series of death-defying comic set-pieces, with Falk the epitome of seasoned nonchalance and Arkin, who up to now has led a quiet, ordered life in Scarsdale, having a series of well-justified nervous breakdowns. Scenes in a fictional banana republic ruled by demented dictator General Garcia (Richard Libertini) are particularly inspired. Ultimately, what makes this comedy sing is the divine chemistry between Falk and Arkin, two comedic pros in their element. Beware the inferior remake.

3 out of 5 stars Clean Buddy Movie Comedy.......2007-04-22

This is one of the classic buddy movies of its kind. The humor and satire are funny and insightful. There is no vulgarity so you can have teenagers watch this movie. This version is much better than the Michael Douglas remake by the same title. Alan Arkin is a consumate actor who displays a surban dentist in over his head. And Peter Falk is hilarious as the CIA spy or not. Alan Arkin does a great job stealing the movie as he does in many of his movies. See Alan Arkin in the movie Poppi, a tear jerker comedy with the most adorable kids.

5 out of 5 stars funnyest in-laws movie i ever seen!!!.......2007-04-12

still to this day. this is the funnyest in-laws movie ever seen!!! if you like peter falk.(the colombo)you will laugh your butts out!!!with this one!!

5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2007-03-09

So much better than the 2003 version. Every time I watch this movie my face hurts from laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Far Superior to the Remake.......2007-02-22

The 1979 version of The In-Laws is so much better than the pathetic remake of a few years ago, its not even funny.

What made the original so great was the screenplay by Andrew Bergman who also wrote the scripts for Blazing Saddles, Fletch and The Freshman. Bergman's script was finely tuned to the personas of Alan Arkin and Peter Falk to a degree that few screeenplays nowadays are. Falk's character was written as a dishonest version of Lieutenant Columbo that added to the fun. Perhaps no other film could take such an ungainly phrase as "serpentine, Shelly, serpentine" and provoke so much laughter with it.

Add in the on-screen chemistry of Arkin and Falk and you have yourself a comedic winner.

Universal Pictures made a great deal of money from its monster movies in the 1930s. In the early '40s, the burlesque team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello kept the studio's coffers full. When the two franchises were combined in 1948, the result was another windfall--despite the apparent oil-and-water mix of subject matter. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was the first of these summit meetings, although the title is a misnomer. Actually, Bud and Lou bump into most of the Universal heavy-hitters, including Count Dracula (played by Béla Lugosi himself), the Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.), and the Frankenstein monster (veteran monster Glenn Strange). There's even a token appearance by the Invisible Man, whose disembodied voice is recognizable as that of Vincent Price. Sure enough, the film is funny, especially since it gives the portly Costello multiple opportunities to do his wide-eyed, quivering scaredy-cat routine. Audiences ate it up, and in future installments Bud and Lou would run into Boris Karloff, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man, and the Mummy. But the first was the best. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Best of Abbott and Costello.......2007-09-04

This is the best Abbott and Costello movie there is. The loose plot and the appearance of Bela Lugosi as Dracula only highlight the talents of these two comedians.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend to any fan of original Frankenstein/Dracula movies........2007-08-23

My 8 year old thinks this video is great. He's a big fan of the old Frankenstein/Dracula/Invisible Man/Mummy collection movies. He loves the comedy on Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.

5 out of 5 stars Fun with kids..........2007-07-09

I bought these to introduce my daughter to slapstick comedy. No one does it better than Abbott & Costello. These movies were always on in my grandmother's house, and they still crack me up. The first time we watched them, my daughter was a little frightened until I explained that they were just people dressed up and pretending to be scary and now she loves them! I plan to start a new Halloween tradition to watch them each year (with popcorn of course) with our family after trick or treating :)

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST HORROR COMEDY EVER! .......2007-06-29

It's funny how most of the Abbott & Costello horror comedies are not very good, yet this one works so well! This is a classic that I watch on Halloween just to prime me up for some great horror films.

5 out of 5 stars Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein.......2007-06-21

Timeless classic blends comedy and monster movie, resulting in something spooky enough to excite kids without causing sleepless nights. The best A&C vehicle by far, its great to have Lugosi and Chaney on hand. A fast, funny scarefest that viewers of all ages should love.
