What sounds like the high-concept romantic comedy pitch from hell--widower president falls for smart lobbyist while the world watches--is actually intelligent, charming, touching, and quite funny. Granted, it's wish fulfillment all the way (when was the last time you saw a president who was truly presidential?), but in the capable hands of writer Aaron Sorkin (TV's Sports Night) and director Rob Reiner, The American President is incredibly enjoyable entertainment with quite a few ideas about both romance and the government. Michael Douglas stars as the president, who after three years in office starts thinking about the possibility of dating. When he auspiciously encounters cutthroat environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), sparks begin to crackle and the two begin a tentative but heartfelt romance. Of course, his job gets in the way--their first kiss is interrupted by a Libyan bombing--but darn it if these two kids aren't going to try and make it work! However, they hadn't counted on the president's Republican antagonist (Richard Dreyfuss), who starts carping about family values. The predictable plot--Douglas finally goes to bat for his lady and his country--is leavened by Sorkin's wonderful, snappy dialogue and a light touch from the usually subtle-as-a-sledgehammer Reiner. Both manage to create a believable White House-office atmosphere (with a crack staff including Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Anna Deavere Smith, and Samantha Mathis) as well as a plausible and funny dating scenario. The true success of the movie, though, rides squarely on Douglas and Bening; this is unequivocally Douglas's best comedic performance (ergo his best performance, period) and Bening, usually such a good bad girl, takes a standard career-woman role and fleshes it out magnificently. You can see in an instant why Douglas would fall for her. One of the best unsung romantic comedies of the '90s. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this movie, great love story. .......2007-09-14

The American President is a great movie, good love story.
So many movies that are out now and in the past plus being done in the future, have so much vilonence, and to much nudity and sex in the movie
that it is no good.
I spent three years from 1968 to 1970 in the army and I have seen enough
killing and war.
This movie is by far my all time favorite movie.
I also bought the movie Dreamer about the race horse from you folks, and that one also rates right along with The American President.

4 out of 5 stars MOVIE.......2007-09-14

It is quite a cute movie. Not at all like the sex movies that Annette Bening has made in recent years. I recommend it at a price of around 10 to 12 dollars.

5 out of 5 stars The Oval Office.......2007-08-28

This movie takes you inside the White House and humanizes the Presidency. The movie was entertaining and funny.

In the world of romantic comedies this is one of my personal favorites, ranking along side such modern classics as "You've Got Mail" and "Pretty Woman". (Yes I own all three.) It's been available on DVD for some time, and chances are you've seen it on TV. If it is new to you, then read on. The story is unusual in that it revolves around a widowed President, his pre-teen daughter and an antagonistic lobbyist to whom he's attracted. The dialog is smart, witty and funny, and the chemistry between all the principle actors is very evident. If the opening theme music and some of the players seem familiar, it's because the film was made and produced by the same people who went on to do the Emmy-winning TV series "The West Wing". (With Martin Sheen advancing from Presidential Advisor here, to the Presidency itself.) The workings of the White House, the serious decisions that have to be made, and the travails of a re-election campaign all provide an authentic backdrop to the tale of romance that is the real heart of the film. I don't want to spoil the fun of the ins and outs of the love story as it unfolds, so instead offer up a few of my favorite lines:

"This is the White House...yes the President is expecting your call."
"Tell her she has nice shoes, women like that."
"No Sydney, 200 pairs of eyes are not on me, they are on you..."
"Oh, hi Sydney... Good morning Sydney...Hi Sydney..."

Got your attention? If so, then buy this romantic comedy that will definitely leave you in an upbeat mood when it's over. (Oh, for a Presidency like this one!)

5 out of 5 stars Even the President needs passion..........2007-07-14

Michael Douglas and Annette Bening are perfect together in this 1995 romantic comedy. It shows a different side of a president, rather than all politics. President Andy (a widower) wants to date just like any other single guy, except he's the president. It makes light of just how hard it is for the president to do anything like a normal person outside the White House. Rounding up the cast are Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox and Richard Dreyfuss all are excellent in their performances. I enjoyed this movie-- it is funny and heartwarming. I could watch it over and over again and not get tired of it...an excellent buy...

From the golden age of television miniseries comes this prestigious 1979 production based on Lillian Rogers Parks's memoir, My Thirty Years at the White House, a real-life American Upstairs/Downstairs that chronicles her family's tenure on the White House servant staff through eight presidential administrations. Emmy nominee Oliva Cole stars as Maggie, a proud matriarch with "indomitable spirit and unfailing spunk," and who is determined that her children "are not going to have street ways." She becomes the first colored maid on the presidential family floor, beginning with the William Howard Taft administration. Her polio-stricken daughter, Lillian (portrayed as an adult by Leslie Uggams) eventually joins her during Herbert Hoover's administration and likewise rises through the ranks to to become a trusted confidante of the First Families.

Backstairs at the White House works on several levels. It is the inspiring personal story of two extraordinary women who had a unique and privileged perspective of the people and events that shaped the first half of the 20th century. It also presents vivid snapshots of the presidents and their families in all their quirks (Mrs. Taft felt that bearded servants brought bad luck), failings, and greatness, as well as such now-obscure personages as New York critic Alexander Woolcott. The stellar cast is comprised of stage and screen veterans and TV favorites. Robert Vaughn (as Woodrow Wilson), Celeste Holm (as Florence Harding), and Ed Flanders (as Calvin Coolidge) were nominated for Emmys, as was Roots costar Louis Gossett Jr. as houseman Levi Mercer. Also notable are a pre-Airplane Leslie Nielsen as chief White House usher Ike Hoover, Cloris Leachman as the chilly supervising housekeeper Mrs. Jaffray, Victor Buono and Julie Harris as reluctant president William Howard Taft and his more formidable wife "Nellie," Eileen Heckart as energetic Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harry Morgan, giving 'em hell as Harry Truman. Backstairs at the White can be melodramatic ("You're not married to me, you're married to the White House," Lillian's estranged husband tells her at one point), but it never descends to soap opera. The Emmy-winning makeup is convincing, and the Emmy-nominated screenplay does an admirable job of compressing more than 50 years of history. "What is heard within the walls of the White House is to be forgotten," Maggie is instructed early in her employ. Luckily, daughter Lillian ignored this directive to create a compelling document that puts a human face on the occupants of the real West Wing. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever And A Blast From The Past!.......2007-09-09

Backstairs at the White House came out when I was just a kid and I've never forgotten the impact it had on my young life. It was amazing to see how things worked at the White House from the servants point of view. It was honest and refreshing to learn the truth without all the political nonsense that goes with it! I would recommend this movie to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars For my Grandma...........2007-09-03

I was a 10 yr old boy when this mini-series aired on NBC. It was "appointment tv" that week for me and my grandma, "Nana". I had been looking for this for YEARS and it was by chance that I discovered it just randomly searching on Amazon. I didn't hesitate to buy it. The acting, writing, directing et al....remarkable! Olivia Cole and Leslie Uggams at the top of their games. This one will be special for me, particularly when I recall the memory of seeing with Nana, who has since passed on. Thank you, NBC.

5 out of 5 stars Long Lost Mini-Series.......2007-06-09

I remember this series back when it was premiered in the 70's. I loved it then and wanted to see it again but never found it scheduled. I was thrilled to see it reissued in DVD. Watching it brought back so many memories and I found it still had the charm and splendid acting I remembered from so many years ago. Seeing behind the closed doors of the White House gave a glimpse of a part of history we never see. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Miniseries.......2007-05-15

I watched this mini-series when it orignally aired in 1979 when I was 10 years old. It aired over serveral weeks and my family would gather around the TV to watch it. I have been talking about this series since I was ten and have been dying to see again. I cannot tell you how excited I was to see that it had been released on DVD. The minute that I discovered it, I placed my order. It is a great piece of history, with a great cast and I urge everyone to see it.

5 out of 5 stars Backstairs at the Whitehouse.......2007-04-04

This is an excellent series for people of all ages. It is an interesting look at all of the personalities who lived in the White House throughout the years. I have read the book and the series covers much of the same information. You feel sad when the series comes to the end as you wish it could continue!

Description

Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline are both President and accounted for in two hit comedies about the nation's Oval Office. Rob Reiner directs The American President [Side A], starring Douglas as a widower chief executive whose poll numbers plummet when he falls for an environmental lobbyist (Annette Bening). Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Richard Dreyfuss and more top talents co-star in this nimble exploration of private romance in a public Presidency. And in a land where anybody can become President, anybody just did! Kline and Sigourney Weaver star in Dave [Side B], the wry Ivan Reitman-directed story of a lookalike who becomes a stand-in for the country's actual President. From coast to coast the votes are in: this double feature is a winner by a landslide!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The (Fantasy) Presidents we wish we had.......2007-07-13

The American President is a pleasant romantic fantasy featuring a President (Michael Douglas) who plays the Clinton we wanted but, alas, didn't get. The movie is charmingly idealistic; Bening is a treat, and the supporting cast is perfect, Dreyfuss especially enjoyable. Perhaps this movie is the liberal's fantasy, especially poignant these days, but it is also a kind of up dated Frank Capra film, with Good and Romance triumphing.
Dave is even better. Kevin Kline is irrisistable in the role of a President look-alike (he plays the President as well). With a wonderful sense of comic timing and a splendid script, this impossible story becomes completely believable. Like The American President, this is another Capra-esque story, but here the addition of an average guy put into the Presidential role is a kind of flattery to the audience -yes, we think, we could do that as well. I loved the scene where Kline brings in his old friend to work out the budget as they snack on brats. Supporting cast is terrific. Weaver can be both icy and melting; Langella is intimidating and fierce (and also quite funny), and Rhames is perfect. I should also mention Linney, very funny, and Kingsley, quite touching. But the show belongs to Kline, and he brings it off with brio. A lovely film.

4 out of 5 stars The AP vs. Dave.......2007-06-28

The American President is far better compared to Dave. The AP has a better story and you would be more likely to watch The AP multiple times compared to Dave which would probably be one of those movies you brought, say huh at the end, and then put it back on the shelf until six months later when you forget if you liked it or not so you watch it again and the process starts over. Besides the cast in the AP is far better than those in Dave. But considering this DVD is only two dollars more than just the American President on its own, its really not a bad buy.

5 out of 5 stars The American President/DWP.......2007-04-06

Love this movie. It is a great romance, but also gives some insight into the workings of politics. I have watched it over and over and always find something new to like

5 out of 5 stars THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT / DAVE.......2007-04-04

BOTH OF THESE MOVIES IN ONE DISK ARE A LOT OF FUN AND A PLEASURE TO WATCH

I like them both, but "American President" is by far the best of the two and a very good love story.

It's not easy replacing Harrison Ford as a beloved screen hero, but Ben Affleck brings fresh vitality to The Sum of All Fears, reviving Paramount's Tom Clancy franchise in the role Ford made famous. As CIA agent Jack Ryan, Affleck is a rookie in the covert ranks, unraveling a plot that lures Russian and American superpowers into a nuclear standoff, while a neofascist faction turns most of Baltimore into an atomic wasteland and holds the world in the grip of a terrorist nightmare. Affleck combines sharp intelligence with a new-guy's perspective, while a senior agent (Morgan Freeman) passes the torch of back-channel authority. The result is one of the best Clancy films to date, ably helmed by Phil Alden Robinson (whose comic thriller Sneakers was sorely underrated) with a stellar supporting cast, and adapted with abundant humor, humanity, and thrills by Donnie Brasco screenwriter Paul Attanasio and cowriter Daniel Pyne. Even the typically reticent Clancy would approve. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars book better than movie.......2007-09-06

I'm reading the book and decide to checkout dvd, boy what a waste! The only reason buying this dvd is to keep all the jack ryan movies together, patriot games and clear and present danger the best. This movie doesn't match what im reading so don't buy it think it will.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Cast, Excellent Movie!!.......2007-08-24

The Sum of All fears is a fitting name for this movie. I believe the line that sums up this movie is "its not the Country with a thousand nukes that worries me, its the country with one nuke" - now picture the deep voice of morgan freeman saying this and you should get a slight tingle in your spine! Imagine a country with one nuclear bomb.... now let your imagination run wild.... thats what this movie is all about!!! This is not my best movie of all time, however coming close to my best deserves it to be a part of everyones collection!!

3 out of 5 stars Like a roller coaster, this movie has ups and downs.......2007-06-30

After watching this movie once, I don't watch the whole thing any more. What makes it worth purchasing are segments of the movie--not the whole story. I'd have preferred someone other than Ben Affleck in the lead role, but Morgan Freeman was superb in his role. Who can forget his expression as he finally "gets" the word "Baltimore" as the bomb location, and gazes around the football stadium? Another great moment is when Ben's character has been cut off during his message read by the leaders of both America and Russia, and the Russian courageously takes a step back from the escalating nightmare.

I was impressed with the supporting role of our spy in Russia--an actor who has played comedy roles such as the boyfriend one in Kate & Leopold, but was superb in this role...very believable with both dry humor ("so, write a report about it") and in the end sequence.

If it wasn't uneven, I'd give the movie 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Sum of All Fears (Special Collector's Edition)..........2007-06-02

This is a good movie that invites one to think. The acting was very good. Morgan Freeman again, is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars terrorism and wmd brought to the big screen.......2007-04-03

Great video with all star cast that shows the realities that face us here in america. A terrorist mastermind wants to drag the U.S. and Russia into WW3 and uses a smuggled nuclear device to do it. The only thing i would have done differently, is to have used Islamic terrorists to make it more lifelike.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant dialogue and setting!.......2007-09-04

Having watched the movie several times, Sally Hemmins is a great eye opener for those who are not familiar with US history especially during the slavery era. The events and story line were pretty consistent. The other version of Sally Hemmins filmed by Nick Nolte wasn't impressive. But the casting, dialogue, costumes, scenery and most of all the depiction/irony of Southern Slavery of 'Sally Hemmins: Ana American Scandal' is/was brilliant. I'll give definitely give it 5 STARS.

3 out of 5 stars Aside from the dramatic interracial implications..........2007-08-20

of President Jefferson and his concubine/slave Sally Hemings, there remains a rather usual story of a widower who transfers his well-known affection for his young deceased wife to her equally beautiful sister. Sally Hemings and Martha Jefferson were half-sisters and it was said that they looked rather alike. Sally came to Monticello with the marriage of Martha to Thomas Jefferson.

It is easy to point up the hypocrisy of Thomas Jefferson, the author who wrote so eloquently of freedom in the Declaration of Independence while denying to others, but initially Jefferson did seek the end of slavery in the 13 colonies. During the days of the Continental Congress he urged the abolition of slavery as part and parcel of the newly created United States, but was persuaded to drop the cause when the southern states threatened to bolt and withdraw their much needed support in the inevitable clash with the the crown. Following the Revolution Jefferson no longer persued abolitionist ideology

As a person ages, they often become more conservative and careful in their beliefs. This was true of Jefferson. He also held a strong belief in NOT concentrating or centralizing the powers of the government but rather to give the greater authority to each State to govern itself in the newly formed confederation. Although Jefferson's ideas would give way to Madison and the Federalization of the states; many still cling to the idea of decentralized government; the south in particular used this dictum again and again during the civil rights era in order to maintain their segregationist laws.

What can never be known is the true nature of the relationship between Sally Hemings and Jefferson. Sally Hemings was Jefferson's property and with no personal freedom or rights. We know that Jefferson instructed Martha Jefferson Randolph, his daughter by Martha Jefferson, to free Sally & her children upon his death. Many speculate that this was based on his love and affection for this steadfast woman with whom he shared much of his life and by whom he had a number of children.

4 out of 5 stars A STORY THAT ROCKED THE NATION.......2007-07-01

As a genealogist, I collect period movies. This is one of the first movies I ordered. This story is only one of many stories that occurred during the slavery peiod in this country. Because it was Thomas Jefferson - that made it big history. There were several slave owners who not only bed their slaves, some fell in love with them. The acting is excellent and the movie is very relevant. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Just Unbelievably Awesome!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-20

I ordered this movie and it came within a just a week. I love it. I culd watch it over and over again becuz i've been searching everywhere 4 this movie dying 2 c it again; I remember the movie from when it came on CBS back in '99 or 'oo. Tina Andrews did her research well and I love the way Sally Hemings was protrayed in the film. She's beautiful (thanks to Carmen Ejogo) and intelligent as well as feirce and kind at the same time. She's quite confident of herself. I also liked the way Jefferson was portrayed. It's almost completely believable to me-it's nice 2 hav an imagination. The other acters like, Diahann C., Mario V.P., Mare W., Amelia H., and Klea S. are great as well. I wish it culd hav gone into detail about her mother's, Betty, life and her Sally's two youngest sons, Eston and Madison. If you're interested in good entertainment of or the scandal of the U.s. 3rd president, you shuld seriously consider viewing this movie. I really like it and I am sooo glad I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Sally Hemings: Excellent Story Told of Love, Betrayal and Oppression.......2007-03-08

This movie was excellent. It was much better than the version that came out in the early '90's. If you love period films than you will definitely love this historical piece. This is the perfect example of people caught between privilege and oppression. Excellent!!!

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2007-07-09

If you want to have a good time with friends or a get together this is a must have DVD. Funny and perfect for laughter.

3 out of 5 stars +1 for Mo'nique.......2007-03-20

This is a tough film to review. It actually consists of four performances. Of the four, only Mo'nique's performance is a standout. Let's focus on her performance, since she really makes the show. Mo'nique takes the pain associated with being a Black woman of size, and transforms hert pain into cathartic beauty.

While she doesn't hate skinny women per se, she is free to speak her mind when women of size are slighted by skinny women, and really by all people in general. As a Black woman of size trying to maintain a relationship, she speaks honestly about some of the accommodations she is forced to make in order to keep her man.

Mo'nique is real, she is funny, and yes she is Beautiful.

---

Certainly, none of the other three performers are nearly as polished, and the package as a whole cannot stand up to the Kings of Comedy, Mo'nique's performance alone makes the film worth seeing.

5 out of 5 stars Leaders of the Cool School.......2006-11-15

Anyone who DOESN'T collapse in hysterics within minutes of this DVD's start has to either be male, skinny, misogynistic, or just plain all of the above.

I must have watched this on repeat at every opportunity for about a fortnight straight; I told EVERYONE i knew about it, and quite frankly, it kicks the 'Kings' back in the womb til they're born again - half as funny (as these ladies)!

I'll admit that Ms. Laura's wig joke is old and tired now, but the first time you see her do it will keep you stitches you still feel hours later.

My highlight I have to say though, is So'more and the 'Hula Hoop Theory' - I haven't seen ANYTHING to this day - 4 years later - that is as funny as that.

5 out of 5 stars A must own for a stand-up comedy lover!.......2006-11-08

I finally found this after years of looking for it. I watched this with my barracks roommate back in 2001 when I was in the Army and I was laughing so hard that I was in tears! These ladies are by far some of the funniest female comedians I've ever seen. They all had their own things to gripe about, but Miss Laura Hayes was one of my favorites. Pick it up, you won't be dissatisfied.

Call this "The Odd Couple Goes to the White House." Jack Lemmon and James Garner play ex-presidents in this lousy comedy, each of them having served only one term as chief executive and each the other's lifelong enemy. The best jokes in the film are front-loaded into the first five minutes. We meet both men living life after the White House, one (Lemmon) making speeches for whoever will front his large fee, while the other (Garner) writes relevant books no one reads. Any time they show up at the same function, they insult each other like snarling schoolboys. It is pretty funny, but after a brief introduction My Fellow Americans goes downhill rapidly, becoming yet another stupid road movie traveled by characters who hate each other. (How many of these is Lemmon going to make?) The jokes get dumber and cruder, the actors embarrass themselves, and the whole enterprise becomes tedious. The DVD release contains production notes, theatrical trailer, bloopers, optional Spanish and French soundtracks, optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, and Dolby audio. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars My Fellow Americans.......2007-02-06

Combination movie, a sit-com that is very good. Two very veteran actors in James Garner and Jack Lemmon with an excellent supporting cast. Movie touches on several current day issues, and while movie is very humorous, it attacks these issues in a united front. Something our Congress needs to learn how to do today. How opposites can work together. However, given the intelligencia of our current Congress, I sincerely doubt the members would get it.

5 out of 5 stars One of those film's that you can just watch over and over!!.......2006-11-03

Hail to the chief! This is my favorite comedys! Hail to jack lemmon and james garner! They were terrific in this movie. It's action packed and Just plain Funny. Order this movie now, becuase it doesn't matter how much it is. You will want to watch this over and over! I'm telling you the absulute truth here! I JUST COULDN'T STOP LUAGHING!! A great movie!

It seemed like it was just going to be another two out of five star movie. But it wasn't! It is all about two presidents who really don't get along, (Garner and lemmon) Running for there lives, but there running from there friends...the government. On there way they come up against, the government, I'll just say that they meet up with dorthey...more than one dorthey, Mr. blinkey, And many more!

This movie is very good, and has just the right actors for the film! I'd reccommend this one becuase it's one of those movies that you need to watch! so if you want to burn some calories by luaghing! By this!!

4 out of 5 stars Lemmon Less Matthau Plus Garner - and Bacall.......2006-01-11

Republican Russell Kramer (Jack Lemmon) beat Democrat Matt Douglas (James Garner) for President in a very tight race. Four years later Douglas beats Kramer. Four years later Kraemer Vice President William Haney (Dan Aykroyd) defeats Douglas.

Three more years have passed. Kraemer is now making paid public appearances and writing books on any subject. Douglas has more noble goals, nailing every babe he can. Then a scandal is about to break out and Douglas and Kramer find out. Since he can no longer shift blame to Kramer, Haney decides to kill the former Presidents.

The plot fails but leaves the Presidents stranded. They must find the proof that Haney is guilty and get back to DC alive. This starts a cross country chase that is constantly funny including the Presidents becoming involved in a gay pride parade - that saves their life!

I have to guess that this was originally conceived as a Lemmon Matthau film but was too physical for the declining Matthau. It actually works better with Garner as he is more believable as the Clintonesque womanizer.

Lauren Bacall is great as Mrs. Kramer but only has a couple of scenes. Marg Helgenberger (pre CSI) makes an appearance as Douglas' book editor. And Bradley Whitford makes a White House appearance two years before he took up residence with the Bartlett administration in The West Wing.

It's too bad that Lemmon died before he could reteam with Garner. They made a great pairing.

DVD EXTAS: Blooper Reel.

4 out of 5 stars No Computer Animation or Special Effects, Just Great Acting.......2006-01-05

Most modern movies that I can recall seem to be revolved around what is not real. Stellar special effects and computer animation seem to riddle the plot of even the worst movies. However, the decade old movie "My Fellow Americans" is a solid and refreshing comedy that defies this mold.

The story line of the movie is rather plain. Ex-President Kramer (Jack Lemmon) is being set up as the fall guy for a scandal committed during his presidency by his Vice-President (Dan Aykroyd), now current President. Ex-President Douglas (James Garner) is President Kramer's nemesis and political rival. President Douglas is trying to capitalize on the scandal in an attempt to possibly run for a second-term as President. Through a twist of fate, the two Ex-Presidents suddenly find themselves having to work together to stay alive as the current administration is using the government intelligence agencies to track them down and kill them. The result is a comedic road trip across the country in this unique game of cat and mouse. Watching the Ex-Presidents interactions with the "common folks" is both comedic as well as heart-warming.

In the hands of poor actors, this movie would have been terrible. However, I feel Jack Lemmon and James Garner both gave a splendid performance and made this movie a great comedy.

Due to the language, I would not call this a family comedy, but I would not hesitate to show to middle aged children. If you are looking for a movie to kick back, relax, and have a few laughs, I would highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Hail and Holler and Laughter to the Chief.......2006-01-04

This is a rapturous comedy of two ex-presidents who have spent their political careers as arch-enemies. But when a psycho National Security Agent Tanner teams up with the current President and his Chief of Staff to frame them both for a cover-up, the two foes must forge a fellowship to prove their innocence before being assination after office.

As the former Presidents Kramer (Lemon) and Russell (Garner) trail the American roads trying to escape the NSA ... they meet a homeless couple living in their trailor, march in a Gay Pride parade with two gay Secret Service agents, ride in the back of a motorcycle with Lesbians, hijack a college train bound for Cleveland, and run into illegal Mexicans hiding from the INS. Both see the daily impact of their policies and solve the crime behind their being framed. Probably the most hillarious scene is when the two men are riding stolen police horses to the south lawn to interupt the speech of the current President to prove they are still alive. They are almost shot by the psycho NSA Agent Tanner until a Gay Pride Lieutenant pal re-directs his fire to save them, all believing that President Kramer is in the closet because he is wearing a pride bracelet.

This is one political joke after the other and very telling even a decade after it was produced. One of the kinds of films you can watch over and over again.

Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine both received Emmy nominations for their performances in this made-for-TV movie. The plot follows Nelson Mandela's 27-year struggle to end apartheid. That segregation was abolished without bloodshed also had much to do with the political maneuverings of South African President F.W. de Klerk, played with convincing and tired resolution by Caine. Poitier plays the more powerful personality, and shines as the self-assured leader. Filmed in Cape Town, this extremely talky and sometimes static film is intriguing as a historical study. As a drama, it is a bit dry. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Product Description

Mandela & De Klerk was filmed in South Africa. Most of the locations are those where the actual events took place, and the dramatized sequences are augmented with newsreel footage to ensure the most accurate portrayal possible of recent historical events.

I have not figured out, why someone like Spike Lee ,has not done a film about Nelson Mandela yet.He could have cast Morgan Freeman. He was in the excellent short film ,'Death of a Prophet'(1972),about the remaining days of Malcolm X's life. This film ,'Mandela and deKlerk',is above average. But, would have done better if it had stayed true with his autobiographical story,'The Long Walk to Freedom'.I saw the deKlerk role as a filler and the film focusing less on Mandela's political struggle and search for equal justice. The long walk to freedom is not just Mandela's personal struggle and for his Afrikan people but all just people of the world.Let's hope another film takes a closer look at Nelson Mandela's story and credo. Before history repeats itself.

This video is an excellent follow-up to the former video produced where Danny Glover plays Mr. Mandela. It takes up where the other video leaves off! Not only does it do an excellent job of portraying the struggle of a people but enables you to see all prospectives involved, namely those of the white South African community. My whole family is inspired by the life of Mr. Mandela and all those involved. And after seeing this version of the circumstances, I was able to see the sacrifices of Mr. DeKlerk also! I am inspired to achieve those visions in my own life and not to fear what man or society may do to me! Thank God for men with a vision and a will to see it became a reality!

First of all, let me begin by saying, I would suggest that you get this and American Experience: FDR together and watch them in order with FDR first. Two great presidents, two great documentaries. By the time you finish them, you feel as though you know both men as well as you know your own family.

I've always liked Truman, he called it like he saw it, and he didn't take any guff from anyone. Watching both videos, it made me shake my head, and fear the future of our nation. We will never see men like Truman and FDR again.

The documentary covered Truman from birth to the end of his presidency, and brought up a fact about the Marshall Plan that I never knew. It was packed with his personal life and his public life, and put a human face on a simple farmboy, his struggles in life and his ability to overcome.
It showed what made Truman, TRUMAN.

Description

He personified America at the turn of the last century--confident, exuberant, involving-but suffered from hidden demons. He was Teddy Roosevelt, or TR, heroic figure of boundless energy and bleak emotions. Family letters and diaries, authentic film footage and interviews with family members and others profile an ambitious man: fearless in combat, loving and generous with family, and unafraid to take on powerful financial interests.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to TR.......2006-02-15

Easily my favorite in the American Experience presidential series, this biography of Theodore Roosevelt is informative, enlightening, challenging, touching, and even inspirational. Narrated with gusto by the late TR buff, Jason Robards, and featuring interviews with noted Roosevelt historians and key family members, this is an exciting journey through the life of the first modern American president.

At no point in covering TR's life is there necessity to spice things up or add color. His story is a dizzying, wild ride that parallels the expansion of the nation, its influence, and its lifestyles from the Gilded Age of the Second Industrial Revloution to the War to End All Wars. Roosevelt was a precocious asthmatic child with insatiable curiosity and a love of taxidermy; a boxer at Harvard; a state legislator; rancher; sheriff; nationally respected naval historian; big game hunter and authoritative ornitholgist; a reformist New York City police commissioner; the Assistant Secretary of the Navy; a heroic volunteer colonel in the Spanish American War; Governor of New York; Vice President; and (upon the assassination of William McKinley) the youngest man ever to become President. All before his 43rd birthday!

You owe it to yourself to view this film and learn from the life of this incredible human being who was described as "a steam engine in trousers." He was a bit eccentric at times but he was NEVER boring. His life is certainly motivation to take life by the horns and live it to the fullest.
