When Goldie Hawn recommended Elizabeth Berkley for a small role in First Wives Club, she publicly stated that Berkley deserved the opportunity to redeem herself after starring in the ridiculous Showgirls. That says it all: this sleazy, stupid movie, which mixes soft pornography with the clichés of backstage dramas, is the kind of project an aspiring actress would have to put well behind her to keep a career going (though costar Gina Gershon certainly benefited from her, uh, exposure in the film). Berkley plays a drifter who hitches a ride to Las Vegas, becomes a lap dancer and then a performer, and discovers--gasp!--there's a whole world of sex and violence involved with these things. Gershon is probably the best element in the film, playing Berkley's bisexual rival for the big spotlight on stage. Joe Eszterhas was well overpaid for writing this howler, and director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) should have known better than to take it seriously. --Tom Keogh
Description
Seduction, passion and power struggles unfold when the creators of Basic Instinct, director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers) and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Original Sin) blow the lid off the seemingly glamorous world of Las Vegas show dancing to create one of the most controversial and shockingfilms of all time. Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) has what it takes to make it as a Las Vegas show girl what she doesn't have is a way in. To survive, she accepts the only job available: lap dancing at a seedy club. And when she meets Cristal (Gina Gershon), Vegas' reigning show girl, Nomi wants everything she has including her boyfriend (Kyle MacLachlan). And as Nomi dives deeper into the world she so desperately desires, a rivalry between the two women heats up. The battle for the spotlight becomes so fiercely competitive that it drives Nomi to desperate lengths and devious heights for fame in Sin City.

INSTANT CAMP CLASSIC!!!!.......2007-07-29
"Instant camp classic," giggled The New York Times about Showgirls. And how! It's been well noted that writer Joe Eszterhas lifted the plot of Showgirls from All About Eve, 42nd Street and Flashdance. It should also be pointed out that Showgirls owes a major debt to Valley of the Dolls.
What Eszterhas has done is combine the four femmes from Dolls into just two gals--with schizo results. Elizabeth Berkley behaves like both a nice newcomer seduced by her boss and a self-destructive, psychotic...well, you know; costar Gina Gershon is both a sweet showgirl and a seen-it-all, show-biz monster. Even the stars we hear the filmmakers wanted for the Berkley and Gershon roles, Drew Barrymore and Madonna, couldn't have pulled off playing such split personalities. With two glassy-eyed doorstops in the leads, Showgirls is unadulterated farce from the get-go.
Our show begins when tough, young hitchhiker Berkley gets a lift from hunky sociopath Dewey Weber, who generously drives her to Las Vegas, then steals her suitcase (what does he think is inside?). Down-and-out Berkley moves in with dim-bulb waitress Gina Ravera and soon Berkley's got a gig as a cheesy stripper, but when she gets a look at the Big Time at the hotel Ravera works at, she witnesses a real Vegas show starring Gershon (who, despite the rhinestones glued to her boobs, is indistinguishable from any of the other dancers). A coked-up Gershon turns up at Berkley's strip joint with her hotel boss/lover Kyle MacLachlan, and pays Berkley $500 for a nude lap dance, during which Berkley, in a fit of originality, licks her own -- (no ...you gotta see it.) Whereupon Gershon encourages Berkley to audition for the hotel show.
Surveying the line of hopefuls, snide show producer Alan Rachins snarls at the first, "What are these, watermelons? This is a stage, babe, not a patch!" Berkley is hired and proceeds to witness the dog-eat-dog world of showgirls: one chorine growls at seamstress Ravera, "You're gonna see a smilin' sn--ch if you don't fix this G-string." Well, maybe it's more dog-eat-dog-food: over lunch Gershon tells Berkley, "I've had dog food. I used to love Doggie Chow," and Berkley gushes, "I used to love Doggie Chow, too!" The brief bonding over pet food experiences ends when Gershon comes on to Berkley and Berkley rejects her, sneering, "B-tch!"
Berkley is visited in her new, "classier" digs by her old strip-club pals. Flush with success, Berkley goes after druggy McLachlan. Naked in his pool, they have a whiplash-like imitation of sex which resembles nothing so much as an epileptic fit. (You'll want to throw in your laundry and add detergent!) Then, having stolen Gershon's guy, she shoves Gershon down a staircase, and that night she takes Gershon's place in the show and becomes a star (although she, like Gershon, blends right into the chorus). Her triumph is spoiled when pal Ravera is gang-raped by a rock star and his friends. Suddenly, Showgirls veers off into Cleopatra Jones/Coffy territory, with Berkley becoming a martial-arts super-heroine--Ninja Showgirl?--who kicks the rocker senseless. After French-kissing Gershon farewell, an older, wiser Berkley blows town, hitching a ride with, yep, luggage thief Weber. The duo heads for L.A.--to work, we hope, for Zalman King in a sexy cable TV series lifted from their roles here: each week, a little lap-dancing, a little crime-fighting. We'd lap it up.
Disappointement ............2007-07-24
Extremely disappointed. Exact the same movie no deleted scenes or any additional scenes. However there are scenes which exists and were not included in the movie. No comments from actors no interviews ..... I don't even know why it was called fully exposed version.
A BLATANT MGM DOUBLE-DIP..........2007-07-19
... I could have sworn that, just last week, Amazon listed the running time at 172 minutes on this new edition... thinking that the movie has been extended rather considerably, I went out and bought this new version which isn't new at all - with the exception of a few worthless extras, it's the exact same DVD!
I have to agree with Brett Cullum - I'd be quite interested in hearing a commentary track from Elizabeth Berkley dishing the dirt on the role that trashed her movie career before it even started - all for only $100,000 (that's what she was paid back in 1995 - obviously, this girl needs a new management team)!
Fascinating.......2007-07-01
It's just fascinating how bad this film truly is. I just caught it again the other nite on cable and whats remarkable is that directing credit went to Jay Jansen(on t.v.). But, obviously, everyone knows Paul Verhoeven directed the theatrical release. The t.v. version isn't any worse than the theatrical release, so I don't understand Paul Verhoeven taking his name off the credits. This film just sucks through and through. Avoid it at all costs, watch it for free first, then decide.
Here is what is on this thing... .......2007-06-29
If you previously bought the SHOWGIRLS VIP edition - this is the exact same disc only packaged without the box and all the trinkets that came with that edition. You get commentary by a guy who is a fan of the movie and helps host late night screenings, the Scores girls talk about stripping and critique those sequences, and there's an old promotional piece made during shooting that is called "A Diary". The transfer is good and the extras are fun, though none of them seem to cover anybody associated with the film. If you did not purchase the glam deluxe box set this is a cheap way to get all those features without hunting it down. Otherwise if you have that edition, this is merely a double dip and repackaging of the same disc with new cover art.
This is the NC-17 cut and no additional material has been added. If you have that edition already there is no difference in the movie at all. There are no deleted or extended scenes. This is the version shown in theatres and released twice before on DVD.
SHOWGIRLS begs for better extras. I would love to hear a director's commentary or Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gershon talk about the film. But that hasn't happened yet. Maybe one day we can hope for a Criterion edition and all the stops will be pulled out!

Check your brain at the door, because it's time once again for a dim-witted visit to Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his happy-go-lucky family, who hit the Vegas strip for this vacation. (The kids who originally played the Griswold children have been replaced.) The Griswold exploits in the casinos are good for a few embarrassed chuckles, especially when Mrs. Griswold (Beverly D'Angelo) gets onstage with Wayne Newton for a truly mind-altering rendition of Minnie Ripperton's ear-piercing 1970s hit "Loving You." And because he scored so many low-brow points as the lame-brained cousin in the original National Lampoon's Vacation, Randy Quaid is back to cause a lot of trouble, while Chevy Chase is reduced to uninspired slapstick and endless puns involving the word damn. In other words, Vegas Vacation is the kind of comedy that can convince you that civilization is doomed. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The Griswold family hits the road again for a typically ill-fated vacation, this time to the glitzy mecca of slots and showgirls, Las Vegas.
Customer Reviews:
This is WAY better than European Vacation.......2007-08-07
I don't understand how fans of the series insist that this is the worst one. For coming out eight years after the last installment, this movie is better than you'd expect. Unlike European Vacation, where without Chevy, the film would be unwatchable, here we have a great looking movie with likable stars that present an irresistable postcard for Las Vegas. Beverly D'Angelo is still quite lovely and the Griswold kids are likable and good looking, unlike the annoying, ugly kids that ruined European Vacation (no disrespect to Jason Lively and Dana Hill, but their characters were written rather shrill and irritating). Randy Quaid and crew aren't entirely necessary, but they don't hurt the film either. The only thing I could critique is Chevy himself. He's obviously aged since Christmas Vacation and seems a little uninterested. The ocassionally spotty screenplay has him doing silly things (like the whole Hoover Dam sequence) but he still assumes the role with comfort and command. It's good that they ended the series with this. They wrapped the series up with dignity intact.
Love the vacation movies.......2007-05-18
We have all the Chevy Chase Vacation movies, they will always be a classic for our family. We take Christmas Vacation to our summer cabin and watch it whenever the grandchildren are there. We have now added this to our collection for the lake and I'm sure this will be a tradition also. Wish he'd make some more.

this movie is the funnest thing i have ever seen . I watch this movie every time i am getting ready to go to vegas.

Guilty Pleasure.......2007-06-14
This film has the worst acting ever. That's probably what makes it so entertaining to watch. The costumes and the dancing are very entertaining and the plot is pretty ridiculous. The VIP set is great with the shot glasses. Definitely a movie you need to see at least once.
Plan 10 From Las Vegas.......2007-04-26
Plan 9 From Outer Space was worse than this steaming pile, but they didn't have the lavish budget to waste that this one did.
Every show biz cliche imaginable is dragged out, but in such a clumsy, trying-but-failing-to-be-manipulative way, that your jaw drops to the floor, and you are entertained, almost against your will. Also, there are really spectacular dance scenes, and lots of female flesh for the eyes to feast on.
But the story and the dialogue and the direction are stupid. The red haired actor who plays the choreographer also played the Wig Master for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on an episode of Seinfeld. Kramer somehow misses seeing the show and as consolation, is allowed to walk down Broadway wearing the Tecnicolor Dreamcoat. He is then mistaken for a pimp and arrested. Perhaps that whole sequence was intended as an homage to Showgirls, and one can only wish that Joe Esterhauz could have been arrested for pimpin' this ridiculous movie.
One Of The Most Erotic Movies Ever Made. (IMHO).......2007-03-04
Showgirls is one those movies that has been paraded with awful reviews "Woofs" and just plain hate. I really don't understand why this is. Showgirls is about a beautiful young woman named Nomi(Elizabeth Berkley), Who decides to try her luck and hitchhike to Las Vegas to become a dancer. She gets a ride to vegas and befriends a young woman named Molly, Molly then helps her get a job a smalltime strip-club she works at doing make-up and such. Nomi then realizes that she wants more than this. She then auditions for a popular show called "Goddess", Nomi then becomes a surprising success. And many other entertainings happen during the film. The movie is filled with non-stop nudity witch helps the film to become very erotic. You will get an eyefull of the naked body of Elizabeth Berkley, Who you probably used to watch on "Saved By The Bell". The storyline is surprisingly good,The acting is also excellent.
If you have a problem with nudity and the subject of "Rape" I wouldn't recommend this. But if you appreciate the female form and don't mind a little violence I would MOST defenitly recommend this.
All in all this movie deserves a 10/10.
Good sleazy fun!.......2007-03-03
Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley) is a beautiful traveling girl who is desperate for a job in Las Vegas. She gets a new home thanks to a new friend named Molly (Gina Riveria) for she gets a job as a dancer at the Cheetah club, one night a talent agent finds her for he decides to have her as a part of an erotic stage show at the Stardust called "Goddess" where she meets the big star known as Cristal (Gina Gerhshon). James (Glen Plummer) is a free-style man helps Nomi as he teaches her the right dance moves to become a top dancer when the rivalery between her and Cristal has begun.
Very entertaining sleaze epic from Paul Verhoeven ("Total Recall", "Robocop", "Basic Instinct" and "Starship Troopers") has non-stop nudity, clever dialog, sex and over the top acting. There's plenty of good eye candy through the many gorgeous girls prancing nude especially Ms. Berkley who really shows off her stuff for the camera.
The DVD has good picture and sound with a couple of good extras like the trailer and a behind-the-scenes featurette, this is an enjoyable erotic flick if you can suspend your disbelief.
Guilty Pleasure.......2007-01-31
I know this movie gets a lot of crap but you know what? I love it and all its smutty terribleness. I've seen it about a hundred times on tv with all the bad stuff cut out so I finally decided to go ahead and buy the damn thing so I could get the goods! and boy was it worth it. I laughed soooo hard. If people were that spastic at sex everyone would be walking around with bruised groins. Despite the bad acting and script, I can't help but love it.

This hapless comedy may actually work a lot better on video than it did in theaters. A parody of contemporary mob movies (with a few sidebars skewering such hits as Forrest Gump and The English Patient), Mafia! most closely resembles the first two Godfather films in its generational saga of a gangster family. Lloyd Bridges plays Don Cortino, a native Sicilian who presides over a crime syndicate, and Jay Mohr plays his Michael Corleone-like son. The film is by Jim Abrahams, formerly of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker directing team (Airplane!, The Naked Gun), single- handedly trotting out the old dumb-joke aesthetic that worked wonderfully a lifetime ago but looks a little creaky in the era of There's Something About Mary. Silly allusions to every crime film (GoodFellas, Casino) produced in the last three decades and featuring at least one wise guy or made man find their way into Mafia!'s gags, but most are arbitrary and shrugged off. The film tanked in theaters for good reason; on the other hand, Mafia! might have a lot more to offer if you're slumped on your own couch at the end of a long day, ready for brain-dead entertainment and absolutely apathetic about comic integrity. Even a film this instantly stale on the big screen might have its place in video posterity. -- Tom Keogh
Description
Taking aim at Hollywood's greatest gangster films, MAFIA! is the hilarious comedy spoof that packs all the laughs you'd expect from the hit-making director of AIRPLANE! and HOT SHOTS! In this sidesplitting saga of disorganized crime's most dysfunctional family, legendary star Lloyd Bridges rules the underworld as the ruthless, powerful ... and ceaselessly clumsy ... Godfather Vincenzo Cortino. When the time comes to choose the next Don Cortino, however, a riotous rivalry breaks out between his two sons: one a war hero (handsome Jay Mohr -- JERRY MAGUIRE) and the other a raving psychotic! Also starring sexy Christina Applegate (JUST VISITING) in an outrageously funny cast -- you'll happily die laughing with this dead-on mobster movie parody that offers entertainment you can't refuse!
Customer Reviews:
You'll never look at the Godfather the same way again!.......2007-06-11
Another absolute "must-have" if you love the spoofs of Abrams/Zucker fame. Lloyd Bridges as the Godfather is priceless. Get ready to laugh until your sides hurt and get this movie!!
Mafia!.......2007-01-15
This is one incredible and loveable movie. I've watched it 3 times so far and each time I laugh until my sides hurt.
If you are a fan of spoof movies ...........2006-07-23
If you enjoy movies like Airplane and Scary Movie (and let's not forget Attack of the Killer Tomatos), this one is for you.
GOD BLESS LLOYD BRIDGES.......2005-09-27
Everyone knows this movie is funny, but what some people might not know (unless you read the credits)is that this was Lloyd Bridges last movie. He died shortly after completeing his work on his last movie, Meeting Daddy, which was released in 2000. He died on March 10, 1998. This was an extremely funny man and that is more than evident in all the films he made throughout his life. This movie is just an example of how brilliant he was as an actor. He is still missed.
Warning: Watching this may cause you to laugh to death!.......2005-08-12
I would say this is the greatest parody-type comedy ever without Leslie Neilson. The story about Vincenzo Cortino, who flees Sicily in 1901 for safety by swimming across the Atlantic, and the life of himself and his family. The plot may be a little confusing, as the movie is changing between past and present, but it does become clear after a while. Plenty of nonsense, slapstick comedy, with plenty of parodies from the Godfather movies and Casino. A great movie that you can watch again and again, a must buy for those who love this type of movie.
Description
Onstage with Kylie will be 7 band members and 12 dancers. "Showgirl" features an amazing cross-section of Kylie hits, some performed in a brand new style. All periods of Kylie's career are celebrated, from the beginning up to her new single "Giving You Up"! The DVD features 26 songs, a 22 minute behind the scenes documentary, multi-angle features and ROM section. "Showgirl" represents Kylie's finest moments in music, performance and style and is an homage to the showgirl, one of the most exotic, decadent and sensual icons of our times.
Customer Reviews:
She is pure energy. I'm very happy that I bought this dvd.......2007-07-05
I'm a new fan of kylie. This was my first musical contact with k.M.I only knew the hit "Can't Get You out of My Head" . She is very talented, she can sing she can dance. she has a different voice. She has a big production in the stage.IT is a visual experience with feathers, dancers and lights.
The best songs to me as a new fan are:
Better the devil you know.
In your eyes.
I believe in you.
And for the people who insist to compare Madonna with Kylie:
*Madonna is very cold in her performance.( although ,Madonna has a better production than kylie)
*Kylie is volcan in the stage .
Kylie At Her Best!.......2007-05-26
What I love about Kylue, even moreso than Madonna, is that Kylie embraces her bubbly pop past and seems to revel in the campiness and silliness of pop music, whereas other artists like Madonna and others seem concerned about legitimacy and being taken seriously. For instance, in almost every one of her tours, Kylie sticks with her classic SAW hits like "I Should Be So Lucky" and "The Locomotion" (among others). While she often reinterprets them to keep them fresh (in this case, "The Locomotion" is performed in a slow, sexy striptease number) what I really love is that in this show, the musical arrangements of "I Should Be So Lucky," "Hand On Your Heart," "Better The Devil You Know" etc. are basically the original studio versions. But the remixs are cool too. In this show, she mashes "Spinning Around" with CeCe Peniston's classic club hit "Finally" to great result.
If I have one minor quibble, it's that I purchased this DVD along with the "Showgirl: Homecoming" double live CDs, only torealize afterward that they are two different shows. (The DVD was recorded in London and the CDs in Sydney.) As such, there are some songs on the DVD that aren't on the CD and vice versa. I know, silly complaint, but I wish all the songs were on both. What can I say, I can never get enough Kylie!
Kylie in Sydney.......2007-05-13
Quite a good recording for a live concert. Minogue's band and tour staff have done an excellent job in recording the live concert. They have captured the excitement of a live performance and Kylie at her best. Showgirl Tour London DVD has a better selection of her hits.
Excelent DVD - Excelenet Artist - Excelent Kylie!.......2007-05-12
This DVD is the very greatest hits of Kylie. I really liked the way she did that concert, the show it self.
If yor're not a Kylie's fan, no problem, the show is so good enough to make you have a good time enjoing the great sound in Dolby and the great picture quality.
BORING! BORING! BORING NO TALENT!.......2007-04-11
I swear this woman cannot dance nor put on a decent show. Nothing but hand gestures and movements. Anyone wants my copy can have it for free. I cannot believe I wasted money on this no talent airhead.

--Tom Keogh
Description
Seduction, passion and power struggles unfold when the creators of Basic Instinct, director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers) and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Original Sin) blow the lid off the seemingly glamorous world of Las Vegas showdancing to create one of the most controversialand shockingfilms of all time. Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) has what it takes to make it as a Las Vegas showgirlwhat she doesn't have is a way in. To survive, she accepts the only job available: lap dancing at a seedy club. And when she meets Cristal (Gina Gershon), Vegas'reigning showgirl, Nomi wants everything she hasincluding her boyfriend (Kyle MacLachlan). And as Nomi dives deeper into the world she so desperately desires, a rivalry between the two women heatsup. The battle for the spotlight becomes so fiercely competitive that it drives Nomi to desperate lengthsand devious heightsfor fame in Sin City.

Customer Reviews:
The modern part is not included.......2007-02-02
The overall content of this DVD is fine. It goes through a desert town with water supply, rising due to Hoover Dam, Bugsy and the mobs, Howard Hughes, the fires of MGM and Hilton and the challenges of Atlantic City. Then it stops here in spite of its being released in 2005.
This is disappointing since it is kind of distant from what we see today. After I've visited Las Vegas twice and watched this film, a gap is certainly there and I just cannot bridge them together. I'd like to know more about Steve Wynn, how these latest casinos are built, what they look like inside...etc.
So if you really intend to know the history of Las Vegas, it is a fine piece. But if you are in the case like me more preferring in the modern part of Las Vegas, you should leave it aside.
Terrific Perspective of Sin City's History..........2005-11-20
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Under the impression of this slogan many visitors believe that they can bring out their wild and uninhibited self while fulfilling their wildest imaginations and fantasies in Vegas, as no one would ever find out. For this reason many pilgrimage out to this oasis of sin and pleasure, as it would allow them to be completely free. The PBS documentary Las Vegas: An Unconventional History offers the audience a historical perspective to how Las Vegas has become the resort for personal desires.
Today, Las Vegas is a booming modern metropolitan city that is amidst a flowering period where money stream into the city through a constant flow of tourists. It has, ever since the completion of the railway that runs through Las Vegas, been a city friendly to strangers. However, the kindness towards strangers has always been reciprocal, as the city provides pleasures while the strangers dropped their hard earned money in a few minutes of hope and desire for something better. Through gambling and prostitution Las Vegas exchanged money for dreams with the visitors, and this is how people helped build this concrete giant.
Despite the banning of gambling, the bars and gambling spots continued to provide the service for the visitors. The building of the Hoover Dam and the development of the atomic bomb also helped boost the number of visitors to Las Vegas, as there was nothing else to do in the arid city than to drink booze, party, and gamble. Thus, the city became a hot spot for those who sought some escape from the hard reality outside its city limits. Soon the mafia world also discover this golden goose that simply was ready for the picking of anyone that knew the business, which lead to a migration of wise guys from Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Miami. The mobster Bugsy Siegel changed the future for Las Vegas by building the first luxurious hotel - The Flamingo Hotel - with all of the modern amenities including entertainment. Later the Rat Pack would also honor the city with its legendary performances.
The constant flow of money made many people willing to turn their eyes the other way, as politicians and other people of significance allowed hardcore crooks to become respectable businessmen in the desert city. However, the sweet dance could not go on forever, as politicians began to seek justice. In addition, the NAACP began to protest the Jim Crowe laws that were in place, which quickly were removed as it influence the flow of cash. Even the rich philanthropist Howard Hughes bought his way into Las Vegas when he was order an eviction, and his money was cleaner than his predecessors, which again made many close their eyes.
In Las Vegas: An Unconventional History, the audience gets to see the history while it also touches on many of the negative aspects of the city such as water shortage, overpopulation, gambling addiction, and its consequences. It is a clever narrative that follows a traditional linear approach while every now and then returning to present day through some interview with different aspects of the city. When it all comes together it is a very enlightening two part piece that stretches over three hours, which will offer the viewer a decent understanding of how Las Vegas grew up from first being a small railroad intersection to the gambling Mecca of the world.

Destined to remain a curio in the careers of Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier, The Prince and the Showgirl is a good movie that might have been great. While's she's wonderful as a saucy showgirl with a knack for foreign relations, Monroe's off-screen notoriety in 1957 made this a directorial nightmare for Olivier, who never bursts out of his stiff-collared finery as the Carpathian Prince Regent, who's smitten by Marilyn's innocent, unpolished candor. Of course, she's actually smarter than the monocled monarch, at least in her sensible handling of his stuffed-shirt diplomacy, so it's easy to forgive Terence Rattigan's script (from his play The Sleeping Prince) for favoring pomp over circumstance. The comedy percolates without bubbling over in this tale of opposites attracting, but it's a top-drawer production anyway, blessed by Jack Cardiff's gorgeous Technicolor cinematography and by the charm of costars who successfully concealed their off-screen anxieties. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A lovely Monroe.......2007-05-06
I find this to be the movie in which Marylin Monroe is the most beautifully among the many movies she made. A comedy this is for sure and Marylin Monroe has made it hilarious with her signature innocent look. She is totally convincing as the nobody who caught the attention of the Duke (Lawrence Olivier), the one who could offend him, tease him yet could get away unsrcathed.
As with the plays and movies Lawrence Olivier made (Richard III, Hamlet etc.), this movie wowed the audience with its magnficent, luxurious set and props. Even the reception ball at the Ambassy was down to the finest detail. And the witty diaglogue between Mariyln Monroe, the Duke, his son guaranteed that this is not a no sense comedy. The ending is clever, romantic yet realistic.
And the greatest achievement of Lawrence Olivier (actor and director of the movie) was to choose Marylin Monroe for the role. Under his guidance (how difficult it is to achieve behind the scenes!), he has made Marilyn Monroe shine with wit, mischief, innocence in this movie like nowhere else before. Here Monroe has inner beauty to match with her lovely big screen shots. The credits must all go to the director.
I also agree with other reviewers that Monroe even outshined Olivier in many scenes. This made the movie even more intriguing to watch - to be able to admire qualities of Monroe you can't see elsewhere; to be convinced on screen that it's Marilyn's character who transformed the Prince from a hard-hearted dictator to a romantic passionate man and not the other way round. That's a master stroke of Olivier.
A Borefest.......2006-12-20
'The Prince and the Showgirl' is a forgettable Technicolor '50s movie, long and drawn out to the point of obscurity. Marilyn Monroe plays Elsie Marina, a showgirl with an annoying laugh who appears ditsy yet is really clever and witty. Lawrence Olivier plays some kind of future prince who meets Elsie at a showclub and decides to invite her up to his room to seduce her. Of course, the prince is cold and uncompassionate, and as Elsie says, "Lacks love in his life". Unfazed by his charms (or lack of) she resists him but ends up spending the night at his place (albeit in a seperate room). The prince becomes unfuriated at this clever lady and has several unncessary bursts of outrage that are supposed to be funny but aren't. The most interesting part of the plot is when Elsie overhears the Prince's son talking on the phone in German, planning to overthrow his father so he can obtain the crown sooner. After that, there is the promise the plot may pick up but it doesn't. Elsie gets to ride in a chariot with the Prince & other royals because one of the women has fallen ill, which makes the storyline even more unrealistic than it is. Then there is the long coronation ceremony that is tediously drawn out, causing viewers to become bored to tears. Most of the time during the coronation ceremony the cameras are fixated either on Monroe's face or stain glass windows. After this, the plot drags on some more but as we see in the end, Elsie somehow manages to fix an agreement between the Prince and his son, and earns the respect of the Prince all in the next hour. This movie is around 2 1/2 hours long but felt more like 3 1/2. I actually became anxious for it to end. This is one of the most boring movies I've ever seen aside from 'War and Peace' although 'War and Peace' actually became interesting after the first hour. This movie had the opposite effect: it started out interesting but went downhill from there. Sure Monroe looks beautiful in this, but is her beauty enough to give this five stars? This movie along with 'Bus Stop' was supposed to show Monroe could be a dramatic actress. And while she does show a bit more range than her previous films, it's nothing to write home about. A charismatic actress who picked forgettable film roles. Skip it, you're not missing much.
Easily Marilyn`s best performance.......2006-09-29
In this she is a Judy Holliday, just on the sensitive side... Olivier and numerous others, have over the years panned the Monroe abilities("Just a model")...
aaaaaaaaaaaaaa well there was much more to Marilyn that that, Curiously... history will have it that Marilyn`s abilities was acknowleged after her death and only then...
But here in Norway, a book from 1953, heralds her and her amazing acting gifts as a serious performer and another 1 from 1957 credits her as a comedienne of the first rank and named this film as a source....
Yup, Marilyn steals everything, execept the cameras(a George Raft cliche about Mae West in 1932, but it does suit Monroe as well).
Luminous Marilyn.......2005-12-26
I found Marilyn Monroe's performance absolutely intelligent and shrewd and delightful. In this movie, she plays a show girl taken to spend a night with the visiting Grand Duke of Carpithia, played by Lawrence Olivier. It's 1911 and he's in England for the Coronation of thr King of England. She thinks there'll be other people there, but when she finds out that they'll be alone, she wants to leave inmediately. Plot developments, of course, keep her near the Grand Duke. It takes him a while (perhaps too long?) to be charmed by her physical assets and personality, but at last, he falls for her. When this movie was released, Marilyn was 31 and she proves herself to be a good comedienne once again.I would have wished for a different ending. The rest of the cast is very good, with fine British actors. Highly recommended.
Monroe and Olivier in a comedy fit for a Duke..........2005-05-04
THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL is notable for featuring the once-in-a-lifetime pairing of Laurence Olivier with Marilyn Monroe. Though the two lack any kind of rapport, the movie does hold some charms with it's lush period design and lovely musical score by Richard Addinsell. Jack Cardiff's photography is exceptional too. The story is based on the not-too-successful play "The Sleeping Prince" by Terence Rattigan, in which Olivier had starred on Broadway (opposite Barbara Bel Geddes) where it only played for 60 performances. The story is simple. Olivier plays the womanising Grand Duke of Carpathia, visiting London, who becomes entraced by an American actress, Elsie Marina (Marilyn Monroe). Elsie is invited to the palace for a nightcap, and ends up staying for an eventful weekend, becoming entangled in the royal goings-on.
Amusing, if not forgettable fare. Monroe and Olivier give their best in the lead roles though this can't count among their best work. Some fine support is provided by Sybil Thorndike, Richard Wattis, Jeremy Spenser, Esmond Knight, Rosamund Greenwood, Jean Kent, Gillian Owen and Paul Hardwick.
The DVD presents the movie in a full-frame transfer. Extras include newsreel footage of Monroe arriving in London to shoot the movie, as well as the obligatory trailer.

Flesh For Fantasy.......2003-07-04
Contrary to what others might say, this is a good little disc for what it is. Every year, a nationwide chain of strip clubs called Deja Vu holds their Showgirl of the Year competition to promote dancers in various regions. Reginal finalists all descend upon the North Hollywood branch of the chain for the final competition.
This DVD chronicles that competition...sort of. It's never made clear whether this is a recording of one year's competition or a copilation of entrants from various years (though the consistent similiarity of the faces in the crowd shots seem to confirm the former theory). We are given visuals of several attractive performers as they go through their setpiece performances while trying to win the title. The video quality is sharp enough to cut glass, and we're frequently treated to two or three camera angles. The result is a more complete version of the performance than you'd get in a club. The camera work is very well done, with none of the harsh lighting or shaking steadicam work that tends to highlight such films.
That said, there are a few areas where this disc loses points. The first is sound; rather than give us the noise of the raccus crowd or the music the girls selected for their performances, Peach DVD has simply layered generic techno loops over each performance. The result is a little disjointed, as the movements of the dancers almost never syncs with the movement, and in a few cases the girls speak or sing as part of their performance, but their words are lost to posterity. Either the cameraman or the editor is also somewhat overenamoured of the strobe effect, using it for more than half of each of the last few girls' performances.
The disc also loses some points for deceptive advertsing. The package back promises a slew of extras that are nowhere to be seen on the disc; instead we're simply offered a few previews of other titles, some of which are just teasers with little actual flesh revealed (and let's face it, that's why we buy DVDs like this right?); one of them is literally just a shot of an actress getting makeup applied while her friend chats inanely about trivialities from the sidelines!
Still, for [money] this is a decent deal on a decent disc. If you're a fan of nude performances or strip clubs in general, this will make a fine addition to that pile of DVDs you keep in the shoebox under your side of the bed.
boring.......2003-02-14
Very poor camera work, low quality, low quantity, expensive, DVD format is worse to navigate than VHS, not recommended. Too bad, there are some babes on camera, but you don't get a good look at any. Want my copy?
