Saturday Night Fever is one of those movies that comes along and seems to change the cultural temperature in a flash. After the movie's release in 1977, disco ruled the dance floors, and a blow-dried member of a TV-sitcom ensemble became the hottest star in the U.S. For all that, the story is conventional: a 19-year-old Italian American from Brooklyn, Tony Manero (John Travolta), works in a humble paint store and lives with his family. After dark, he becomes the polyester-clad stallion of the local nightclub; Tony's brother, a priest, observes that when Tony hits the dance floor, the crowd parts like the Red Sea before Moses. Director John Badham captures the electric connection between music and dance, and also the desperation that lies beneath Tony's ambitions to break out of his limited world. The soundtrack, which spawned a massively successful album, is dominated by the disco classics of the Bee Gees, including "Staying Alive" (Travolta's theme during the strutting opening) and "Night Fever." The Oscar ®-nominated Travolta, plucked from the cast of Welcome Back, Kotter, for his first starring role, is incandescent and unbelievably confident, and his dancing is terrific. Oh, and the white suit rules. --Robert Horton

Originally saw this in the theatre when I was a kid. Still watch it from time to time. Great movie.

4 out of 5 stars This is a classic.......2007-07-23

Disco dancing! John Travolta doing Danny Tario's moves. This is burned in the consciousness of anybody over the age of 12 in 1979. Travolta was so cute back then (and he's still dancing!). Yes, it may be cheesy, but the 70's were cheesy - and I miss them!

5 out of 5 stars Travolta's Defining Role!.......2007-04-28

Tony Manero (played brilliantly by John Travolta) is a 20 year old paint shop assistant living with his devout Catholic mom and his hard working dad. He doesn't get along very well with them. There are a lot of tense moments at the dinner table.

But on the weekends, Tony rules the disco! But this dancing champion of the New York disco scene needs to learn about how to treat other people like champions. He talks sassy to his mom, and he treats females with disrespect. He even blows off and ignores a friend who admires him and needs him most (the boy who commits suicide by jumping off the Verrazano Bridge).

But Tony starts to change when he meets a slightly older and more mature disco queen. He learns from her that treating people with respect is just as important as being good at what you do.

All the while, the movie is propelled by one of the greatest soundtracks in movie history, certainly the best disco album ever assembled. You also get a look at one segment of the late 1970s New York youth culture scene.
The movie still hits hard after 30 years.

5 out of 5 stars Dance the night away.......2007-04-17

This movie is about a man and a woman, in the prime of their lives fighting the New york city meat grinder. They both find one another in a smoke filled bar and lit dance floor. They equally appreciate glances as one impresses the other on the dance floor. In the sounds of the legendary "Bee Gees" you find your self dancing your imagination away as the leading actors fight against each others impossible love that will never happen. Both actors find resolve in dance, and agree to be friends in the crazy world that is entertainment.

3 out of 5 stars TRAVOLTA CARRIES THIS MOVIE!.......2007-04-11

Like another reviewer said, I too grew up hating this film. I was a young teen and a rocker and would not be caught dead watching this film. I have seen it many times now and I think it captures that 70's disco time period perfectly. Travolta is the whole show and of course the classic music soundtrack. The DVD has a good transfer and weak extras.

Before Kevin Smith became a Hollywood darling with Chasing Amy, a film he wrote and directed, he made this $27,000 comedy about real-life experiences working for chump change at a New Jersey convenience store. A rude, foul-mouthed collection of anecdotes about the responsibilities that go with being on the wrong side of the till, the film is also a relationship story that takes some hilarious turns once the lovers start revealing their sexual histories to one another. In the best tradition of first-time, ultra-low budget independent films, Smith uses Clerks as an audition piece, demonstrating that he not only can handle two-character comedy but also has an eye for action--as proven in a smoothly handled rooftop hockey scene. Smith himself appears as a silent figure who hangs out on the fringes of the store's property. --Tom Keogh

Description

If you're in the market for wildly funny entertainment, CLERKS delivers with wholesale hilarity! It's one wacky day in the life of a pair of overworked counter jockeys whose razor-sharp wit and on-the-job antics give a whole new meaning to customer service! Even while bracing a nonstop parade of unpredictable shoppers, the clerks manage to play hockey on the roof, visit a funeral home, and straighten out their offbeat love lives! The boss is nowhere in sight, so you can bet anything can -- and will -- happen when these guys are left to run the store.

5 out of 5 stars I'LL F_CK ANYTHING THAT MOVES! -Jay.......2007-09-12

If a single day in the life of a small convenience store clerk seems like a good idea for a movie, you need to watch clerks. if it doesnt, then you need to watch it anyway. Clerks was Kevin Smiths first movie, but it takes place second in the timeline of the "New Jersey Cronicles" just a few days after the events of Mallrats.

Clerks was filmed in black and white with a $27000 budget, but dont let that steer you away. the low budget adds some sense of charm to the movie i havent found in many others. the black and white adds a sense of artsiness to the cheap film style. its mostly a series of long conversations between the main character working at the quick stop randall next door at the video store. the conversations run everywhere from the contractors who built the Death Star to what they're going to do with the rest of their lives to a lot funny sex talk that has probably offended lots of people since its release.

Jay and Silent Bob made their first appearance in Clerks and have consequently been in every othet movie of the cronicles (mallrats, chasing amy, dogma, jay and silent bob strike back, clerks 2)

The Clerks X 3 disk DVD set is a great deal with TONS of bonus features. there is an hour and a half documentary of Kevin Smith's life leading up to the release of Clerks. There is a director's cut version of the film *SPOILER* where Dante actually gets shot and killed in the end. there's a lot of deleted scenes. there's 2 or 3 different commentaries for the movie. there's the original auditions from all the main characters.

this is a great movie in a great collection full of special features.

5 out of 5 stars 37?.......2007-08-16

For all of those that have seen this movie know exactly what I'm talking about. The introduction to the ViewAskewniverse. Kevin Smith brings us into his world with this clever comedy.

Expoloding on the scene the same year as Pulp Fiction many people may not realize just how much Clerks has added to pop culture. One of the best independent films to date.

And the DVD is wonderful. There's the very interesting commentary, the beavy of deleted scenes, an alternate ending, and even a music video which, ironically, is done in color.

This is a film to love, laugh, and just outright have a good time. It indeed gets my recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars For the penultimate Clerks / Kevin Smith fan.......2007-08-14

This cut of Kevin Smith's debut contains a handful of extra or extended scenes along with a different ending. All of it adding something to the released version from 1994. For me however the joy of this edition is the documentary about the making of Clerks. Clips of the casting sessions with the actors, stories about Kevin & longtime collaborative partner in crime Scott Mosier in the earliest days of being mates at film school, Bob Hawk talking about first seeing the film etc... this stuff was great.

Know that I'm a huge Smith fan and sort of lock-step buy anything with his name on it. Curse you showtime for not green lighting Man Child!

4 out of 5 stars MORE THAN JUST A COMEDY, IT'S A STATEMENT ABOUT LIFE!.......2007-07-25

This movie is so near and dear to my heart. It seems to capture the different elements of my life all wraped up in one.
As the movie starts, we see the main character DANTE roll out of bed to answer the phone. The owner of the QUICK STOP can't make it in to open, so he has called the ever reliable DANTE to open. We learn that DANTE is not very assertive, somewhat uptight, and high strung, but also an all around good guy. Once he opens the store, We are introduce to his girl, VERONICA. Through there conversation, we learn she cares alot about DANTE and wants him to do something with his life. After a lengthy conversation about a certain sex act, we are introduced to the movies comic relief, JAY AND SILENT BOB(BOB played by KEVIN SMITH). They are just a bunch of wild party animals who are just out to smoke some dope and have some fun. After an amusing scene with JAY, we are introduced to RANDALL, DANTE'S smartass co-worker who doesn't seem to care about anything or take anything seriously. Throughout the movie, uptight DANTE is trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life(and figure out if he wants a relationship with VERONICA or his old flame KATELYNN). RANDALL serves as the anchor, keeping it 'real' when DANTE'S diatribes about life get a little out of hand. All this while dealing with CRAZY and BIZZARE situations, and taking in a days worth of customers.
When this movie came out, I had recently turned 18 and was just starting to get used to the 'real' world. The reason I identify with this movie is when I ws a teenager, I was just like JAY, ALL ABOUT THE PARTY!! Once I turned 18, I became, like DANTE, the very serious(when it came to work) straight laced type. After a few years of working in the public service industry, I became somewhat burned out, like RANDALL, and developed an irreverant, smartass attitude to all the people I had to deal with.
This movie is about becoming an adult and not knowing what you want to do with your life, witch is something I, and I suspect many other people, know ALOT about.
The reason I gave it four stars is because although I LOVE this movie, It is very rough around the edges. You can tell by the camera work that KEVIN SMITH only had one or two cameras to work with. In addition, this movie is notorious for taking a joke well past its point(the asian design major, for example).
To sum it up: If your a fan of real-life comedy drama that has something to say, YOU WILL LOVE CLERKS!!!

4 out of 5 stars Such a great value........2007-06-15

If you love, like, or kinda dig kevin smith films, or just his style of film making, this edition of clerks is a great buy. They cover almost every aspect of the films making, even listing expenses at one point. talking about cast disagreements, and all with the kevin smith tongue in cheek style. I am glad I bought it.

Lo and behold, Clerks II defies the odds as a sequel that even the most ardent Clerks fans can be happy about. Twelve years after Kevin Smith turned the independent film world upside-down with his $27,000 black-and-white comedy, perpetual slackers Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) return for another raucous romp in suburbia, but this time there's no beloved Quick Stop mini-mart to ensure their low-level employment. Now they're aimless 33-year-olds flippin' burgers at Mooby's, a fast-food joint with a cow theme that's "udderly delicious." Dante's engaged to his long-time girlfriend but has unexpectedly fallen in love with Mooby's manager Becky (and since she's played by Rosario Dawson, can you blame him?), and Randal's still holding out for life, liberty, and the pursuit of low ambition. The responsibilities of adulthood are rearing their ugly head, and with Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) still dealing weed and generally being obnoxious, well... something's gotta give, right? The way Smith has written this long-awaited follow-up, the dilemmas of Dante, Randal, and their ongoing friendship are something that anyone can relate to, and with Dawson lighting up the screen (in a role demanded by producer Harvey Weinstein to boost box-office appeal), the movie's romantic chemistry is surprisingly delightful. Rest assured, also, that Smith (shooting mostly in color this time, on a $5 million budget) hasn't forgotten where he came from: Clerks II is jam-packed with the same lewd, crude humor that made Clerks an indie-film phenomenon, and Smith's good-natured sincerity is still on full display, ensuring that only the most prudish viewers could possibly be offended. For everyone else, this is as enjoyable as any sequel could ever hope to be, with amusing cameos by Smith-movie veterans Ben Affleck and Jason Lee, among others. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars the journey comes to an end........2007-09-13

The final chapter of the "New Jersey Chronicles" is am almost satisfying ending to a series of films extending about 15 years.

its more than 10 years after the events of clerks. Dante and Randall's situation hasnt improved much. they're still working basically the same jobs. in the opening scene the quick stop pretty much burns down. the rest of the movie after that takes place at Mooby's fast food place, Dante and Randall's other job.

ive always found Dante to be a kind of bland character, just like TC in Mallrats, but they both have that outrageous sidekick (randall) so it balances out well.

Clerks 2 carries the torch of the original perfectly, with classic characters and always entertaining strings of dialogue. the movie has a satisfying ending which properly brings closure to the chronicles. i wish Kevin would keep it up though. even after all these years, these characters havent played themselves out at all, even if their own creator thinks thats the case. Kevin Smith is arguably my favorite writer/director, so im kind of biased, but all of his work that ive seen couldnt be any better in my opinion.

like most DVD's Kevin Smith puts out, this has the special features to keep anybody busy for a while, including an hour and a half long documentary on the making of Clerks 2.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As The First - Duh!.......2007-09-11

Kevin Smith hit paydirt with his ultra-low-budget Clerks back in the day and has been trying to catch up ever since. Clerks, the ultimate satirical look at slackers working in a conveinence store (Dante) and a video shop (Randal)was so fresh and alive back in the day, that anything new would obviously suffer. Years later the slackers no longer have a cush job at the Quickstop when it burns down. They move on to Moobys burger shack to continue their menial existence. Of course, Jay & Silent Bob follow, hanging out in front of Moobys, selling dope and putting on a pretty entertaining show. Nostalgia makes this movie watchable. If I was a person that had never seen the first Clerks, or appreciated its twisted humor, then I would have hated this movie entirely, without question. Where Randal and Dante were funny and kinda sad in the first movie, now they are just plain losers and you want to smash their skulls in with a hammer. Dante is engaged and getting ready to move away to Florida to begin a legitimate life working for his soon-to-be-inlaws. The only flaw to that logic is that Dante is secretly in love with Becky (Rosario Dawson), his boss at Moobys. Where his current girlfriend is a manipulating, clingy, over-zealous make-out queen, Becky is cool and fun and beautiful and she really cares about Dante, God knows why. Overall, the jokes are okay. Jay and Silent Bob are pretty funny. The whole Star Wars vs. Lord Of The Rings is middle of the road. In reality, it's extremely hard to go and make a sequel to a classic that is going to be anywhere near the quality and freshness of the first movie. Escpecially 10 years later. Clerks was excellent film-making by a then starving director. It was fresh and dirty and completely hilarious. Kevin Smith is a talented writer and director, but moving back is not helping. In the original ending to Clerks, Dante gets shot and killed by a robber at the Quickstop. Maybe Smith should have left it that way.

Deal with it!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS.......2007-09-05

This movie was great and was insanely funny. I wouldn't watch this with my parents though.

5 out of 5 stars Outrageously funny!.......2007-08-30

This was one movie I found myself laughing at so hard. Dante (Brian O'Halleran) might be the main character of the movie but Randal (Jeff Anderson) carried the movie with his jokes about geek boy Elias, Lord Of The Rings, and Dante's fiancee Emma. It was also funny when Jay (Jason Mewes) gets hit by The Mooby's door while he's about to urinate outside the building. And the part when Randal accidentally flings his playing cards at a Mooby's customer was so funny I had to back it up to see it again. The most bizarre part is the guy and the donkey. You'd never think a big tough guy like that would be into that kind of thing. And Emma annoyed me big time. The Mrs. Hicks shirt was a bit much and she seemed too controlling with Dante. I know you get that in certain movies but I just couldn't tolerate Emma. Rosario Dawson though is a joy to watch in this as Becky, Dante and Randal's boss at Mooby's. She's way more down to Earth and way more nicer than Emma is. And she was hot during the dance scene on the roof. This is a good movie of over the top crude humor mixed with a compelling dramatic moment. Clerks II is worth the buy!

1 out of 5 stars yet another tooth extraction.......2007-08-29

It isn't funny. It isn't well directed. Its edited horribly. The 'actors' mug at the camera, trying to pass for cool.
This qualifies it though as a indy hit.
Kevin Smith has never been more than what hollywood thinks a young turk outsider director should be.
Now with his career in the toilet(die hard cameos and clerks 2 are him sliding under the waves)I find myself looking with anticipation for his next abortion as his movies are bordering on so bad its good territory.

Queen Latifah demonstrates her loose, easy charm in Last Holiday, a remake of the 1950 comedy with Alec Guinness. Though at first glance it's hard to imagine anyone less like Alec Guinness than Queen Latifah, they both communicate a world of inner thought with nothing more than a sly sideways glance. Georgia Byrd (Latifah), a department store employee, leads a life of frustrated desires--particularly for a bashful salesman from the outdoor furnishings department (LL Cool J, Deep Blue Sea). But when she learns she only has a few weeks left to live, Georgia gathers her money, quits her job, and flies to a swank European resort she's always dreamed of visiting. Naturally, her new carelessness with money and fearless candor lead everyone around her--including her senator (Giancarlo Esposito, Do The Right Thing) and her former boss (Timothy Hutton, Ordinary People)--to think she's a mover and shaker. Last Holiday unfolds the way you expect it to (dozens of movies and TV shows have similar plots), but Latifah and the capable cast keep it alive. Also featuring Alicia Witt (The Upside of Anger), Jane Adams (Happiness), and the ever-dependable Gerard Depardieu (Cyrano de Bergerac) as a passionate chef. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-09-13

I had rented this movie and liked it so much, I bought it. I am always pleased with everything I order through Amazon and I have ordered many things.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Directing, story, screenplay and Editing!.......2007-09-09

I just got around to seeing it last night. It never fails. This is one of those films that I put on the back burner when it first came out because it just did not look right. Everytime I do that to one of these types of films, it turns out that they were not must-see films. This one is clearly not good.

First, the "story" opens up without ANY type of set or explanation of who the cahracters are, what their feelings are, what they are are all about and you end up not having any feeling for them because you do not know them. The director(who needs a different career!) just jumps right into the film expecting you to have feelings for the characters. The ONLY thing that you know about these characters is that they are Queen Latifah and LL Cool J! I guess that is all the producers were betting on to make a quick buck.

QL's character was 'supposed' to be a stiff, striagh and narrow woman who is in love with LL. However, as in all of her films, she is never in character and is still sounding ghetto even though she is supposed to be proper type woman. You don't know that she was in love with LL (just a scrapbook which she looked more like a sick stalker than in love) and you certainly did not get the feeling that LL was in love with her, let alone even liking her like that.

QL's acting sucked. I have not seen CHicago, but I cannot understand how her acting could have been nominated for an Academy Award. Even the horrible Will Smith's acting is better! She continues to use her oh so cliche 'jokes' that only she seems to find funny. A decent actress would have pulled it off better, but the directing, screenplay and editing could not save this film. WHere the actors fail, the production fails even more. Now I know why there are directors and then their are directors who specialze in comedey. It clearly takes more than calling yourself a director to pull off a movie, let alone a comedy.

Yes, the timing was oof for everyone. Characters are talked about and then never seen again. When you do see one again (mamely LL), you forgot that he was in the film also. LL's acting was probaly one of his best as he did not seem like LL Cool J, but his poor character, script and screenplay ruined anything that could been.

You know QL is going to die, but you really did not feel bad for her because th eproducers did a poor job of setting up the characters and bringing the audience into their world that when you hear the news, you really don't care if she is going to die or not. In fact, there was not one charater who you would be concerned about, except maybe the Chef.

The movie was filmed in teh Czech Republic, I assumed because of the low cost. Like someone who is going to blow ALL of their money because they are going to die thinks "I will go to the world famous and always beautiful Czech Republic!" Not Egypt, Rome, Paris, the Carribean, Hawaii - the usual spots.

Al in all, this movie was not interesting. It was boring because of the production. This is why the most important part of a film is the story. If you get that wrong, you don't have a movie. The screenplay was horrible and this movie is not one for the collection, unless you are a female. I never once got the feeling that they loved each other and I NEVER got the feeling that LL's character even like QL more than a co-worker. They should have had me on teh job to clean this up. Even some decent advisors would have worked. I guess this was one of those "put together quick to make a buck" films.

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable.......2007-08-29

I have to say, I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie, but absolutely loved it after watching. It is charming, well acted, and is particularly refreshing in that there's nothing skeevy about it - no nudity, no cursing - you can watch it with your children in the room, and it sends a positive message without a pollyanna backdrop. Really, really liked it!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-07-16

This is a refreshing movie about being yourself and don't just let life happen. I can not get enough.

4 out of 5 stars Possibilities and Realities.......2007-07-11

This was a fun Queen Latifa movie. She is beautiful in this movies. Queen Latifa plays Georgia Byrd a department store worker who has always denied herself the better things in life. When she is told that she only has a couple of weeks to live she pulls out her book of possibilities and turns them into realities. This funny heartfelt movie is a great family treat.

While too many movies suffer the fate of creative bankruptcy, Being John Malkovich is a refreshing study in contrast, so bracingly original that you'll want to send director Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman a thank-you note for restoring your faith in the enchantment of film. Even if it ultimately serves little purpose beyond the thrill of comedic invention, this demented romance is gloriously entertaining, spilling over with ideas that tickle the brain and even touch the heart. That's to be expected in a movie that dares to ponder the existential dilemma of a forlorn puppeteer (John Cusack) who discovers a metaphysical portal into the brain of actor John Malkovich.

The puppeteer's working as a file clerk on the seventh-and-a-half floor of a Manhattan office building; this idea alone might serve as the comedic basis for an entire film, but Jonze and Kaufman are just getting started. Add a devious coworker (Catherine Keener), Cusack's dowdy wife (a barely recognizable Cameron Diaz), and a business scheme to capitalize on the thrill of being John Malkovich, and you've got a movie that just gets crazier as it plays by its own outrageous rules. Malkovich himself is the film's pièce de résistance, riffing on his own persona with obvious delight and--when he enters his own brain via the portal--appearing with multiple versions of himself in a tour-de-force use of digital trickery. Does it add up to much? Not really. But for 112 liberating minutes, Being John Malkovich is a wild place to visit. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars This movie is dumb........2007-08-19

After viewing it for myself, I feel that most of the comments made about the movie are seriously misleading (The good reviews were the reason that I purchased the movie in the first place). There are some aspects of the movie that I consider well thought out and interesting, but the movie itself falls short of all the "ingenious, original, modern masterpiece" nonsense that is said about it. During the first half of the movie, my expectations were high that this was going to turn out to be an offbeat indie movie comparable to the works of Michel Gondry . . . . that is not the case at all.
The beginning of the movie, like I said before seemed promising. . . . the main character is an unemployed puppeteer who is truly gifted with creative genius in his art. Unfortunately for him, his line of work is a dying breed and because he is a nameless no one, he lives his life in obscurity, giving performances on street corners, which even there are not well received. Based on a suggestion by his wife (an eccentric sort herself, with numerous pets to compensate for lack thereof of children), he seeks employment. The only appealing job he finds remotely related to his line of work, is a job as a filing clerk, requiring someone with nimble hands. His new job is found on the 7 1/2 floor of an office building, where the ceilings are so low that workers have to hunch over in order to walk around it.

After dropping a file behind a cabinet, he accidental discovers a portal into the mind of John Malkovich. He crawls down it and finds that he can now see through the eyes of John, becoming him for 15 minutes. After which, he is flung out of the portal and is thrown into a ditch along the Jersey Turnpike. He and another coworker (a love interest for both him and his wife) quickly decide to use this discovery to make fast cash and market the portal as a sort of theme-park ride for individuals willing to pay out 200 dollars to go through the tunnel.

The plot takes a serious nosedive after this point. The remaining times that the main character or his wife go through the portal to be john Malkovich are basically for the sake of having sex with the main character's coworker in an out of body experience. . . which I thought was a disappointing turn in what could have been an otherwise very good movie. . . . Am I the only one that doesn't find it appealing to watch this kind of crap?

I don't understand how this can even remotely be considered a work of cinematic art. It uses sex, like so many other shallow movies, to cover up the empty space between the beginning and end of the movie to hold over the viewers interest and disguise a lack of substance in a poorly developed point in the plot.

The climax of the movie displays some of the same creative qualities that I found appealing in the introduction, but overall it just left me just hoping it would hurry up and end. . . . . . Needless to say I will not be watching this movie again anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars rabbitwhisperer.......2007-07-21

Funny, Inventive, and asks the cosmic question of what if we could be somebody else.

5 out of 5 stars Being John Malcovich.......2007-07-11

This strangely inventive surrealistic comedy was the inaugural collaboration between onetime music-video director Jonze and talented screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. With such a bizarre concept, this film could have sent audiences home scratching their own noggins, but Cusack, Keener, and an unrecognizable Diaz have a bright, wonderful chemistry that shines through all the head-trippiness. And who can deny that Malkovich, normally such a priggish presence, doesn't have a devilish sense of humor, especially in a hilarious scene where he enters his own head and freaks out? Clever, inspired, and extremely funny, "Malkovich" is cinema-as-funhouse-mirror, and the effect is dizzying.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - in all areas.......2007-07-01

A great original film which shows the potential once again of an independent production. The photography and the writing were exceptionally well done. I've revisited this film at least 10 times.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible original story........2007-06-16

This film is a modern masterpiece, an original idea that has no rival. Genius in film making. That being said it was damn funny too. Who would have thought that you could base an entire movie around John Malkovich. The ; "in your own head scene" was the funniest thing I've seen in years. Great movie definitely recommend. Call my agent, From now on out its all puppets.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Movies!.......2007-09-08

I agree with what others have said - these are good movies for the whole family... Too bad that we don't see movies like this being made today. I am a big fan of Doris Day and I enjoy watching her.

5 out of 5 stars Movies the whole family can enjoy!!!.......2007-08-14

This wondeful collection takes viewers back to more gentle times, pruddish, yes, but enjoyable with all the family, well acted and very amuzing. Doris Day is beautiful, atractive and such a joy to watch, and Mr. Hudson, is the actor everybody enjoyed, i so many many movies. Tony Randall and the supporting bunch, made this era unforgetable. The music, the custtomes, it all works together to make your family share those times at the movies

    5 out of 5 stars Rock Hudson/Doris Day.......2007-07-13

Always an unbeatable duo for light comedy. The best is Lover Come Back but all three are really great.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-05-14

What can I say...I absolutely adore Doris Day, and who better to play opposite than Rock Hudson. If you love a good romantic comedy classic you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Romantic Comedies that Set the Standard.......2007-04-08

Rock Hudson and Doris Day did it to the hilt with these three romantic comedies. The acting is superb, the scripts are marvelously written, and the dramatic tension/laughs/plots just keep pouring it on.

I think these are three of the best comedies of this type ever done in the following order:

    1. Lover Come Back
    2. Send Me No Flowers
    3. Pillow Talk

Only die-hard Bill Murray fans will likely consider this movie for their home-video library, but it's not without its rewards. You can see why someone as comically astute as Murray would agree to play a dimwitted American who can't tell the difference between improvised theater and a real-life espionage plot. There's certainly plenty of potential for belly laughs, and Murray milks the opportunities like the old pro that he is. Here he plays an American tourist in London who thinks he's been recruited into a street-theater act called "Theater of Life"; actually, he's stepped into a complicated spy scheme that plays like a cross between Hitchcock and the Marx Brothers. Joanne Whalley costars as the femme fatale who may or may not be a double agent, and along the way there's enough comical confusion to foil any number of idiotic villains. The movie stretches its one-joke premise to desperate extremes (Murray thinks he's in a play, so he's oblivious to genuine danger), and 95 minutes is more than enough time to exhaust the comedic possibilities. But, as always, Murray finds a way to mine gold from a few clever bits, and he cuts loose with some inspired lunacy during a climactic scene involving a hidden bomb and a troupe of dancing Cossacks. It's not Murray's finest hour, but give him credit for making the best out of a challenging situation. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Escapist Fun: An Everyman as Super-Agent.......2007-05-24

I just had to add my two cents' worth to the comments of other viewers who disagreed with the lukewarm (at best) professional review, above.

Bill Murray is brilliant and Joanne Whalley is surprisingly funny in this wonderful, escapist farce about the "guy least likely to..." who somehow, surprisingly, foils all the bad guys, saves the world, and wins the girl -- and has nothing but fun doing it! Who among us hasn't longed to stumble into our own hidden potential for excellence and beat the odds, at one time or another?

This movie may ultimately have all the critical social commentary and stimulating intellectual content of a warm bubble bath, but it's just as relaxing to slip into when life's beating you down and you need something frothy and comforting to take the edge off.

I'm not a die-hard Bill Murray fan, by any means, but I've had this movie in my VHS library for years, in case I need some remedial wish-fulfillment fun at the end of a gruelling week.

4 out of 5 stars Murray Makes "Too Little" Just Right.......2007-03-19

We're not talking classic here. But if you're trapped in the house on a Saturday afternoon after an ice storm(which me and my wife were) this is just what the doctor ordered. There's nothing special about the material where an American space cadet in London thinks he's taking part in an interactive theatrical production when in fact he's embroiled in international espionage. It's star Bill Murray who elevates the material. Murray gets all the juice out of his character, a wannabe actor who works at a Des Moines blockbuster, and runs with it. I found his Wally Ritchie a more engaging presence than the one he was nominated for an Oscar for in "Lost in Translation". Joanne Whalley as a high-priced call girl and Alfred Molina as a Russian assassin also offer terrific support. Not "Caddyshack" or "Groundhog Day" but a terrific entry to the Murray catalogue.

I have been looking for this dvd for quite a while because it is Bill when he is best and the review didnt disappoint any bit.

4 out of 5 stars horrible reviews for a hilarious film.......2007-01-25

Wallace Richie (Bill Murray) works at Blockbuster in Des Moines, and to celebrate his birthday he visits his bigshot brother and banker in London. But brother James must host important German clients to seal a deal, so he enrolls Wallace in a reality television show called "The Theater of Life" where contestants play scripted roles. Wallace mistakenly answers a phone call from a real hit man, remains oblivious throughout the film of the mistaken identity, and the rest of the film is about reality mistaken as fiction and vice versa. This film got horrible reviews, but I thought it was hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Murray at his comic best!.......2007-01-14

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and yet I often forget about it. Bill Murray is absolutely hilarious as Wallace Ritchie, and he is surrounded by a fun cast of clueless villians, beautiful women, and incompetent government officials. I love the chase scene, where he knocks down all of the traffic cones - "I've always wanted to do that!" Definitely a classic.

This well-packaged 1983 remake of the French comedy Le Jouet features two legendary actors in an unlikely pairing. Richard Pryor (Live on the Sunset Strip, Stir Crazy) plays a down on his luck writer who is talked into taking a job as a plaything for the spoiled rich kid of billionaire Jackie Gleason (The Hustler), who just can't communicate with his own son. Amidst a constant stream of abuse and slapstick adventures, Pryor manages to bring out the heart in both father and son and bring them closer together, as he fights to retain his own dignity. Director Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon) concentrates on the outlandish set pieces and wisely leaves the comic timing up to the two old pros, making The Toy an entertaining diversion. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars How do I love this film?.......2006-10-27

    Let me count the ways.

    1. They actually make a movie where a rich white kid buys a black man for a toy.
    2. They call the kid Master Bates.
    3. The kid now does adult films.

This is one of the greatest comedies of all time. All that separates this from being one of the top three movies of all time is if they added a scene with Richard Pryor eating a bucket of chicken while the kid has intercourse with an adult film star while wearing a KKK outfit.

In the early 80's, controversial African American comedian Richard Pryor (See No Evil Hear No Evil) was in top form. He was the most influential and electrifying stand-up comic, and one of the highest paid black actors in Hollywood (Pryor was reportedly paid $4,000,000 to appear in 1983's Superman III).

In 1982, Pryor agreed to star opposite the legendary Honeymooners star Jackie Gleason (Smokey And The Bandit), in a remake of a 1976 French film titled Le Jouet, which literally means The Toy in english. The outcome was a classic comedy, although hated by many critics, that is still enjoyed and quoted by people today.

The Toy is directed by Richard Donner (Superman), and also stars Ned Beatty (Superman), Wilfrid Hyde-White (My Fair Lady), Teresa Ganzel (Monsters Inc), and child actor Scott Schwartz (Kidco).

Pryor plays Jack Brown, a struggling and unemployed black writer who will lose his house if he fails to pay $10,000 to pay off his mortgage. Jack finds himself stooping down the social ladder trying to get any job he can get in order to save himself from getting thrown into the street. He finds a job as a cleaning lady for the Bates firm and is hired by Mr. Morehouse, played by Beatty. When local millionaire US Bates, played by Gleason, finds out that one of his cleaning ladies has a moustache, he fires him. To make matters worse, Bates's spoiled little bratty son 'master' Eric Bates, played by Schwartz, arrives in town for a week with his dad, goes to his dad's toy store, and picks out Jack as his toy because he made him laugh. Eric's insistence on keeping Jack and his dad's pampering reults in US negotiating a deal with Jack on the basis that he stays for a week at his mansion to keep his son company. US and Jack go on a collision course over different issues: the amount that Jack needs, US's degrading and racist new wife Fancy Bates, played by Ganzel, and most of all, what the film really focuses on, is how to approach and win over his son.

The Toy is a delightful movie despite what many regard it as being Pryor's and Gleason's low points. In fact, The Toy is one of the funniest films and an excellent pairing for both actors.

the best part of the movie os when jack works at th department store and decides to take a break and while doing so he gets on to the wonder wheel. while on the wonder wheel he pops it and trys to save it by wrestling with the inflatable toy and gets nowhere to sve it in time. then eric comes along to buy jack instead of the deflated wonder wheel.

3 out of 5 stars Ok blast from the past........2006-01-29

It's great to see Richard Pryor in action, especially when he was still in his prime. Watching Jackie Gleason was also fun but this movie shows its age. It has some laughs and some good scenes but the idea of the movie is pretty 80s and lame: Young rich white boy buys/rents black man for amusement and then they learn to love each other and young boy is united with estranged/cold father. Pretty average really.
I bought it just because I remebered it being funny when I was 12 but it's only mildly so now. It's good to see Pryor but thats about it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies you've never heard of........2007-08-09

I remember seeing this movie back in 1980 on HBO and was so surprised that I had not recalled seeing it on the theatre marquee, or in fact never even heard anything about it.

This movie is probably one of the most underrated, under publicized and best movies one could possibly stumble upon.

The Silent Partner has it all, suspense, intrigue and drama all wrapped up in a cast of well thought out players ranging from a sociopathic murderer, to a thoughtful opportunistic bank teller who turns the tables on his tormentor time after time.

Elliot Gould plays reserved bank teller Miles Cullen who turns the tables on would be bank robber Harry Reikle played by Christopher Plummer. The movie begins with Cullen finding a discarded deposit slip on which a hold-up note has been written but for some reason has not been given to the teller to complete the robbery. Cullen decides to keep the theft note for some reason and begins ponderring on it. One day at one of his breaks Cullen notices a mall Santa ringing his bell collecting donations for the poor. What grabs Cullens attention is the lettering on Santa's sign matches the stick-up note that he had previously found. Putting two and two together Cullen decides that this is the would be robber and that he is in fact casing the bank and will be back to finish the job. What follows then is a masterful job of timing on Cullens part whereby he figures out when the Santa-robber will attempt the robbery and takes a very large deposit and actually pockets it for himself. When the robbery happens Cullen gives the Santa clad Reikle only a fraction of the actual deposit and ends up blaming Reikle for boosting the entire deposit.

What then follows is a very serious cat and mouse game being played between Reikle and Cullen, with the cat and the mouse changing roles as the movie progresses. Reikle is a very dangerous man bent on revenge, but we also find out Cullen is nobody to play games with as well.

The story builds to a suspensful climax and an ending that I won't give away but will close the story with no doubts.

As much as I love this flick I cannot for the life of me wonder what in the world is going on with the cover art for the DVD. Apparently whoever did the cover artwork never saw this movie before and just slapped this together.

If you enjoy grown-up, suspensful movies that you will watch time and time again, by all means buy this cheap DVD. You won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Christopher Plummer at his best..........2007-07-10

I totally forgot about this thriller until a friend reminded me about it. I saw it back when it first came out and then again on tv. It kept me on the edge of my seat then and still does today. I just bought the DVD (nothing new was added). This is an excellent suspense thriller. Briefly, Plummer plays a bank robber that discovers more money was missing from the bank than he got. He knew right away that the bank teller (Elliot Gould) had something to do with the rest of the money and he tries immediately to get it. The plot is full of twists and turns and keeps you in suspense the whole length of the film. There was something for every movie lover---fright, suspense, romance and slight comedy. The comedy was courtesy of a character played by a young John Candy! When Plummer says, "One night when you come home you'll find me inside waiting and that will be the night you'll wish you'd never been born," scares the pants off of you. The "aquarium" scene was a bit too much for me to bear, as I am an animal lover (yeah, I felt worse for the fish), but very, very suspenseful!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, queasy, nasty and great fun, with fine performances by Elliott Gould and Christopher Plummer.......2007-06-22

Miles Cullen (Elliott Gould) is a somewhat meek, thoughtful bank clerk who turns out to have unsuspected depths of resourcefulness and questionable morality. Harry Reikle (Christopher Plummer), a bank robber, is definitely not meek. He's just as resourceful as Miles but also is a murderous psychopath with a taste for beating women. When Harry says to Miles, "One night when you come home you'll find me inside waiting and that will be the night you'll wish you'd never been born," we believe Harry means it. Miles believes it, too, and it's great, nasty fun to see how Miles deals with Harry.

It's Christmas time in Toronto and Miles is at work at his bank branch in a brand new shopping mall. Miles realizes that the jolly Santa outside may be planning to rob the bank. Miles thinks about this. When Santa finally acts a couple of days later, Miles is ready. But Miles is ready with his own plan. He cleverly palms the $50,000 in his bank tray, gives Harry chump change, and only then sets off the silent alarm. Harry barely escapes with little but the assumption from the police that he got away with $50,000. Miles places the money in one of his bank's safe deposit vaults, then plans to wait a while before quitting his job and starting over. In his own quiet way, he hopes that Julie Carver (Susannah York), who also works at the bank and is his bosses mistress, will join him. Harry, however, is smart as well as violent. He realizes what Miles did and finds out where Miles lives. And then Miles gets that phone call one night. All Harry wants is "his" money from Miles, whom he even sees as sort of a partner.

For the next hour or so we are up to our necks in a genuinely creepy and clever heist film. Miles may have been a meek kind of guy, but he's not about to give up that money. He manages to track Harry down, turn the tables on Harry, use a beautiful young woman who is trying to use him, still wants Julie but is not above using her as well, and is forced to deal with a grotesque murder Harry leaves in his room. Elliott Gould does a great job as Miles. This isn't the flip, smart-alecky Gould who wore out his welcome after his great success in MASH. Here, Miles is thoughtful. He collects tropical fish. He's underestimated. Our pleasure in part is trying to think ourselves of what Miles can possibly come up with against a killer like Harry Reikle. Christopher Plummer does not have all the screen time that Gould gets, but he is a powerful, compelling presence. Reikle is not just unpleasant, he really is
